Plain, Air for sting quartet and electronics
Tonia Ko (2018)
Plain, Air is wri en for the Spektral Quartet.
e premiere was held in collaboration with Openlands Lakeshore Preserve on September 15, 2018.
is commission has been made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, with generous funding provided by e Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Plain, Air
I. soundwalk/ processional II. on the plains III. in the air IV. within the grove V. the secret language of ying creatures Coda. soaring through an activated expanse
Performance Notes Total duration: about 40-45 minutes
Electronics speci cations For the premiere performance, 19 portable speakers were out ed with soundboards and dispersed along the path. Audio les on the soundboards were triggered by bu ons. e quartet members manipulated boxes containing the Robertsonics WavTrigger (a), while the rest of the ambient sounds were held on Adafruit Audio FX Soundboards (b). e lasercut boxes were designed by Olivier Stankiewicz and produced at Imperial College Advanced Hackspace. Speaker con gurations will ultimately depend on the performance space-- for indoor performances, the electronics may be triggered from laptop to an array of ordinary speakers. (a)

General
Accidentals last until the end of the measure. Courtesy signs are provided as best as possible. In this piece, mircotones are only used in relation to the surrounding equally-tempered notes. For reference:
e main staves in the score show sounding pitches for scordatura passages. Suggested ngerings are provided in the small sta below.
(R to L) Short, medium, and long fermata
For boxed events, repeat freely at own pace until indicated moment (vertical line). Arrow denotes strict continuation of the event, or transformation/ a aca into the next event.
Pacing descriptors Due to the exible nature of a soundwalk, rst movement features events and gestures of inde nite timings. e following descriptors provide guidelines for group interpretation. ese various speeds of dierent musical events should be recognizable to each performer so that cues are audible and can be executed eectively.
"sparse" q at about q=38-44. As if ringing a bell or gong in a ritualistic se ing.
"slow" q at about q=54-66. As if playing a tom-tom at medium dynamic without lingering silence in between a acks.
"medium"
e or K e at about q=54-66. Most variable speed, but for " ller" moments of less importance. When pitched, music at this speed carries the harmonic content, but "slow" or "fast" speeds will naturall stand out more
"fast"
x at about q=54-72. Notes skipping across a surface, or the sound of woodblock played continuously but casually. Harmonic content is still of great importance.
"granular"
y at about q=54 and above. Pebbles throw on a hard surface. Listener perceives the overall texture rather than individual a acks.
String Techniques
Percussive sounds
Knock on the back of instrument body behind ngerboard, creating as much sympathetic resonance as possible from open strings. ("sparse" to "slow") pace
Knock on the back of instrument body behind ngerboard while holding down strings with L.H., with no sympathetic resonance. ("slow " to "medium") pace
Knock on lower right quadrant of instrument body while muting strings. Sound is higher in pitch and contains no sympathetic resonance. ( "medium" to "fast") pace
Cla er ngernails freely on instrument body. Use both hands where possible to maintain texture. ("granular" pace)
Flick body of instrument for a sharp, bright sound. Choose an area with moderate resonance.
Cello only: strike body of instrument with the bo om of palm or st for a low-pitched thud.
Sounds of inde nite pitch
Pizzicato with muted strings (appears always in excerpted gesture). A er upwards glissando of indicated chord, mute strings in the resultant high position and continue strumming. Sounds should be bubbly and bamboo-like.
Play behind the bridge on indicated strings (notated with open strings on the sta). When pizzicato, sounds should be lightly pitched but very dry and percussive.
Increase bow pressure until noise overtakes pitch. Continue high pressure and combine with very slow bow speed so that the noise becomes a stu ering ra le.
Air sounds Air sound with muted strings. With the L.H. dampening all four strings, bow on the indicated strings with autando stroke, changing strings randomly in an uneven tremolo.
Bow directly on the bridge at an angle.
e resultant sound should be saturated, with a wide noise band.
Range extremes/ scordatura
Notes in the highest possible register, with microtonal deviations (slightly at or sharp) from a "main" pitch.
Gradually retune the strings to normal tuning over the composed passage. Squiggly lines indicate durations where tuning adjustments can be made.
Gradually detune string using the pegs, still articulating the stemmed rhythms with the bow. need to occur over a perfectly even rate or sound smooth.
e pitch change does not
"Lowest" sounds played on the indicated loosened strings (which should be as loose as the instrument conveniently allows). Ideally, the sound should be nearly pitchless and primarily made up of rumbling/ apping sounds of the string.
Miscellaneous
Pizzicato with the nail-- a brighter and more metallic sound than ord. pizzicato.
Touch the vibrating string very lightly immediately a er plucking to create a buzz. e duration of the buzz should be as long as possible, particularly at "sparse" speeds, but will be naturally limited by the physical length of string.
Uneven tremolo made up of random, unsynchronized bow changes. A sca ering of irregular accents maybe used to achieve the eect. When used tu i, the texture should still be distinguishable from a normal unmeasured tremolo.
Please note the dierent lengths of unmeasured ricochet. (R to L): single bounce with tiny stu er, then still rather tight and short, "full-length"-- with numerous bounces nearly lling up the full duration of the note, nally a free and unsynchronized "throwing" of the bow of long duration. O en used in combination with col legno ba uto.
Plain, Air Dedicated to the Spektral Quartet, with admiration Tonia Ko
