Tonbridge School Foundation Impact report

Page 1

“I extend my heartfelt thanks to all our supporters. Donations have a significant impact on current Tonbridgians. Tonbridge School was founded on philanthropy and this tradition has continued to pave the way for the future.

At Tonbridge, we believe passionately in nurturing each boy’s unique talents and developing ‘Fine Minds and Good Hearts’. We are inspired by the opportunity to connect both of these in delivering a genuinely rounded education for boys.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE SINCE 2003

Thanks to your generosity and that of more than 3,500 others, almost £20m has been raised for The Tonbridge School Foundation over the past 21 years.

This remarkable achievement reflects the belief and commitment of Old Tonbridgians, parents and friends and we are particularly grateful to the early pioneers whose contributions laid the groundwork for this success.

Since its inception, the Foundation has supported a variety of projects with a commitment to excellence for our students and the wider community to which we belong. Today, it is a source of immense pride and an integral part of the School’s vision.

Over the 21 years, the Foundation has worked in partnership with The Sir Andrew Judd Foundation in shaping Tonbridge. Its support, alongside yours, has made the projects possible and has been vital to delivering a worldclass education to Tonbridge.

While new facilities like the Tonbridge School Centre, the Barton Science Centre, and Smythe Library are visible

landmarks of your support, the true impact extends far beyond bricks and mortar. The Foundation Award programme has grown significantly from just three recipients in 2003 to 72 in 2024, reflecting a commitment to widening access to a Tonbridge education.

All our students seize the opportunity to thrive, achieve outstanding academic results while developing the softer skills essential for life. This is a testament to the collective spirit that continues to shape the future of Tonbridge and helps to maintain its place as one of the country’s leading schools.

I am delighted to share this special Impact Report, offering a glimpse into the lasting difference you have helped to create. It highlights just some of the many initiatives made possible through your support.

SOCIAL IMPACT STATISTICS

TRANSFORMING LIVES

When the Tonbridge School Foundation was established, it was guided by a shared belief that providing a life-changing education to talented and deserving boys who could not otherwise afford the fees was exactly what Tonbridge should be doing. This vision remains deeply rooted in our community, as many of us firmly believe that the opportunity to experience a Tonbridge education should be accessible to those who can benefit most. It’s a transformative experience for the boys involved and one that enriches the entire School community.

Thanks to the generosity and unwavering support of our donor community, The Sir Andrew Judd Foundation and the commitment of the School, the Foundation Award programme has grown significantly since its inception in 2003. This expansion has enabled us to increase the number of Foundation Awards to 72 in 2024.

Our Foundation Award recipients are supported to achieve exceptional academic outcomes and are comparable to those of their fee-paying peers. Since 2013, over 75% of Foundation Award recipients have progressed to Russell Group universities, with a growing number now securing places at international institutions, including Ivy League universities. 83%

“It’s not unusual that you get a boy who’s top of the class, who is also in the 1st XV rugby or also in the choir and the orchestra. The Foundation Award boys are often at the forefront of grasping the opportunities that a school like Tonbridge gives them.”

Moxon

“Every Foundation Award recipient has the ability to have a positive impact on his peers; his teachers; his House; his family and his local community.”

Adrian Ballard Director of the Tonbridge Society

Here we profile some of the exceptional Old Tonbridgians who have benefitted from a Foundation Award. Their stories are undoubtedly the most powerful testament to the difference a Tonbridge education can make to a student’s life path.

JOSH TURNER (MH 02–07)

Josh, one of the first Foundation Award Scholars at Tonbridge, joined us in 2002 from a state comprehensive school, where he experienced both bullying and a system that didn’t fully support his academic potential. The newly established Foundation Award, created to help talented students from less privileged backgrounds, provided him with a life-changing opportunity and a future full of exciting possibilities.

While the transition to boarding school was initially challenging, leaving behind friends and adjusting to a new environment, Josh quickly found his place at Tonbridge. The supportive community, especially the staff, made him feel welcome. He soon thrived academically and personally, forging connections with like-minded peers and immersing himself in a wide range of co-curricular activities.

After leaving Tonbridge in 2007, Josh studied English Literature and Philosophy at Durham University. He then went on to achieve a PGCE and Master’s in Educational Leadership, the latter at the University of Warwick. Josh is an experienced mathematics teacher and currently the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) lead at a state secondary school in Hampshire.

“A Foundation Award is a gift that lasts far beyond a boy’s years at the School. I will be forever grateful for the memories, life-long friendships and formative experiences that have shaped me in my personal and professional life to this day. I can’t summarise how life-changing a Foundation Award is. It defines someone forever, and it also defines the School.

“Being educated in both the state and independent sectors, and having worked as a teacher and leader in both, I have spent my entire life moving between two starkly different systems. I have made it my life’s mission to offer the very best education for my pupils regardless of the setting, by utilising my knowledge of these differences and combining the best of each system with my own passion for lifelong learning rooted in my experience at Tonbridge School.”

“The uniqueness of the Foundation Awards lies in the unparalleled opportunity it offers young boys to achieve their potential, irrespective of their background. This is fostered in an environment that demands academic excellence while recognising that such achievements are incomplete without the cultivation of a profound respect for the perspectives of others and a lifelong passion for the continuous development of one’s character. Teachers at Tonbridge recognise potential, and offer the expert guidance, insight and inspiration their pupils need to realise that potential, in a kind and nurturing way.”

“Foundation Award scholars give back to the School as much as they receive. The sheer amount of Foundation Award pupils in leadership roles at every level of school life, from sports captains to school praepostors, is testament to the incredible impact these awards can have on the whole school. Foundation Award pupils are essential to the continued development of a diverse school community, offering unique perspectives grounded in gratitude for the chance to experience the unrivalled breadth of opportunities on offer at Tonbridge.”

JOSHUA CRONIN (HS 10–15)

Joshua was awarded a ‘Junior Judde Foundation Scholarship’, as it was then known, at the age of 10 while attending his local primary school. The scholarship funded two years at a preparatory school, preparing him to join Tonbridge in the Novi.

During his time at Tonbridge, Josh seized every opportunity available to him. He excelled academically, particularly enjoying the diversity of subjects, with a strong focus on Mathematics and Physics. His passion for languages also stood out, complementing his broader academic pursuits. Alongside this, his growing interest in aviation and his involvement in the RAF section of the Combined Cadet Force proved transformative, instilling confidence, leadership, and teamwork skills. After leaving Tonbridge, Josh went on to study Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol, graduating in 2019. Motivated by a deep Christian faith, he subsequently spent two years working in student ministry for a church in Bristol.

In 2022, Josh joined AtkinsRéalis, a global engineering and nuclear energy organisation, within their management consultancy graduate programme. Throughout the scheme, Josh started to develop his project management and business consultancy skills while working on air safety and logistics programmes for the Ministry of Defence. More recently, Josh has been working with a major airport client on their cybersecurity programme, gaining useful experience in digital service design.

It has equipped me with the ability to engage, connect and build relationships with people from all walks of life. None of these experiences would have been possible without the generosity of the Foundation and its benefactors. For that, I will always remain deeply grateful.

“I am continually grateful for the incredible opportunities the Foundation Award has given me. Hill Side became a supportive and inspiring home, and the camaraderie I experienced there is something I will always treasure. One of the most influential figures in Hillside was Matron, Wendy Challis. Her willingness to listen and offer advice on all aspects of life made her a truly memorable and significant presence during my time at the School.”

“The grandeur of the Chapel never fails to leave an impression. One particular highlight for me was hearing Philip Glass’ Mad Rush performed towards the end of the academic year. The piece would fill the Chapel during a Saturday service, and you could just sit back and listen as it went through its musical phrases, repetitions, and subtle variations creating an unforgettable moment of reflection and awe. That’s a particular memory.”

“Confidence is, without a doubt, one of the most valuable gifts a Tonbridge education has given me.”

CHRISTIAN HAIGH (HS 07–12)

Christian joined Tonbridge as a Music Scholar and Foundation Award recipient. It was towards the end of his time at Tonbridge that representatives from Harvard and Yale visited, encouraging students to explore opportunities to study in the United States. At the time, it was uncommon for Tonbridge students to pursue higher education at American universities, but Christian took the leap and applied. He was accepted to Harvard, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and a Master’s in Computer Science. It was also at Harvard that he met his future business partner.

Today, Christian is the founder and leader of two companies: an asset management firm specialising in litigation finance, bankruptcies, and U.S. government contractors, and a digital wealth advisory firm catering to high-net-worth and ultra-high-networth clients. In 2018, he featured in Forbes 30 under 30.

The Foundation Award gave me an education my family couldn’t have afforded, lifelong friends, and a solid grounding that made my opportunities in Silicon Valley possible.

ED HYDE (FH 11–16)

“I feel incredibly fortunate to have received a Foundation Award from Tonbridge. My family didn’t have great wealth, and although intellectualism was valued from a young age, funding a top-tier education for myself and my two siblings wasn’t an option. My parents focused on giving us a well-rounded foundation—by age five, I was learning piano, which later became a full music programme of clarinet, organ, and singing in choirs.”

“At Christ Church Cathedral School, I joined the cathedral choir, which prepared me well for Tonbridge. Tonbridge was an invaluable experience, and even today I’m deeply grateful for it. That’s where my passion for music truly deepened; I played the organ both at School and at London churches on weekends to earn some pocket money. My teachers encouraged a broad academic base, allowing me to study all three sciences, mathematics, and music.”

“Without Tonbridge, I wouldn’t have had the confidence, skills, or credibility to move across the world for university, and then on to Silicon Valley. I owe immense gratitude to Dr. Mike Clugston, who initially tried to dissuade me from the American path—until he learned it was Harvard, at which point he wouldn’t let me not go, sharing memories of playing poker against some of the sharpest competition he’d ever played with there.”

Ed joined Tonbridge as a Novi, having attended a prep school in East Anglia. However, during his second year at the School, his family financial circumstances changed which made it impossible for him to stay at Tonbridge beyond his second year. All options were explored and, with the support of his Housemaster, Andy Whittall, Ed was informed that he would be able to stay at Tonbridge thanks to the generosity of the Foundation Awards Programme.

Ed completed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of Cambridge and feels that admission to Cambridge would not have been possible without the Tonbridge teaching staff, especially Chris Battarbee, Head of Geography, whose support and advice was hugely influential. Whilst studying at Cambridge, he represented the University in five sports.

Without this generosity and support, I would not have been able to stay at Tonbridge and without a Tonbridge education, I would not have been equipped with the skills, values and friendships that positively impact my life every day nearly fifteen years after starting at Tonbridge.

“ “

“Since leaving Tonbridge, I have played, coached and officiated in various sports in Europe, North America and Australia. Not only did Tonbridge provide the opportunities to try out different sports, but the School also helped me to develop my skills to a high level. As such, I would not have been able to travel around the world playing/coaching/officiating these sports without the opportunities offered by Tonbridge and the high-quality coaching provided by members of staff such as Jono Arscott, Dave Makey and many others. Tonbridge also equipped me with the softer skills that I use every day.”

“Five years at Tonbridge taught me the importance of being openminded. Living with boys from different backgrounds and countries, mixing with teachers with a variety of interests and life experiences, and travelling abroad on various school trips highlighted the benefits of listening to and reflecting upon different viewpoints. My level of open-mindedness was enhanced considerably at Tonbridge, which has benefitted me greatly in my career so far, where I often exercise such a value in the interactions that I have and in the decisions that I make.”

“I will be forever grateful for the opportunities provided by Tonbridge School and the Foundation Awards.”

ZACHARY NWOGWUGWU (HS 2018–23)

Zachary, a third-year Mathematics with Computer Science student at MIT, has been recognised for his research in reinforcement learning, receiving the Singapore International Pre-Graduate Award to work at the Centre for Frontier AI Research. He is currently at MIT CSAIL (Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory), applying AI to optimise mathematical proofs in computational complexity theory, while also taking graduate courses to prepare for a PhD in Applied Mathematics.

Alongside his studies, he has been a teaching assistant for Computer Science, Physics and Real Analysis and is course staff for Probability and Random Variables.

Beyond academics, Zachary has taken on leadership roles as Secretary of the 2026 Class Council and Recruitment Chair and Alumni Secretary of Nu Delta Fraternity. As a varsity track and field athlete, he earned US Track and Field & Cross Country All-New England honours and secured a top-three alltime performance for MIT in the 100m.

Tonbridge raised my aspirations to the heavens and I will take the confidence in my abilities instilled by this education with me for a lifetime.

“I was awarded a Foundation Award in 2017, which gave me the opportunity to experience things that would otherwise have been out of reach. I travelled to China, Belgium, and the United States, made friends from all over the world, and tried new activities like rock climbing, Mah-jong, speaking Mandarin, singing, logging (with a real axe!), feeding pigs, and debating—the list goes on!”

“I am most grateful for being exposed to the upper echelons of academic achievement, which fostered a strong sense of ‘I can compete with the best.’ I have been afforded many opportunities which simply would not have been possible without the financial support of the Foundation and as such I am extremely grateful.”

“I am excited about the future and hope either to pursue mathematics into graduate school, earn a PhD, and move into quantitative research at a hedge fund or quant shop; or work full-time at a startup with a positive societal impact after I graduate.”

With your support, the Smythe Library was transformed in 2016 into an inspirational space over four floors, for learning and teaching. More than just a library, it now brings together three key services that help our boys thrive: the Library, Learning Strategies and the Universities & Careers Department.

SMYTHE LIBRARY

A SPACE FOR KNOWLEDGE AND DISCOVERY

“The Smythe Library remains at the heart of our boys’ school experience, evolving to meet their academic needs while remaining a vibrant hub — both intellectually and socially. We are still a library filled with books and we still ‘shush’ when necessary, but the space is welcoming, sought out and enjoyed by the boys. The School values reading, and since introducing the Reading Strategy in 2021, book borrowing has risen by 28%.

The library combines the traditional whilst adapting to new technologies offering a wealth of online resources to support our diverse community of learners. Our curated collection encourages curiosity beyond the classroom, enriching study for everything from Oxbridge interviews to the Extended Project Qualification.”

“The library has been hugely beneficial to me, offering the perfect balance of study and socialising. It’s a welcoming space to focus on prep, relax during breaks and connect with friends. Its accessibility also makes it a unique place where boys from different year groups come together over shared interests like reading and prep.”

LEARNING STRATEGIES

SUPPORT AT THE HEART OF THE SCHOOL

The Learning Strategies Department has been an integral part of the Smythe Library since 2017.

“Today, Learning Strategies sits at the heart of the School, accessible to every boy. No longer just for those with additional needs, it is a whole-school resource that helps students build skills and confidence, whether through workshops, classroom support or one-to-one sessions.

We also extend support beyond the boys, offering workshops for parents and staff, ensuring that learning strategies are embedded in all aspects of School life. This shift has been transformative, breaking down barriers and fostering a culture where seeking help is seen as a strength, not a stigma.”

Tonbridge’s tradition of academic excellence is reflected in the achievements of our boys, who leave not just with strong results but as critical thinkers ready to contribute to society. This success is driven by passionate staff committed to nurturing curiosity and resilience.

UNIVERSITIES AND CAREERS DEPARTMENT

The Universities & Careers Department has evolved to meet the demands of an increasingly competitive global landscape. The impact is clear: our students secure places at top universities worldwide and continue to seek our guidance well beyond Tonbridge, with many crediting their career success to the foundations laid here.

“Before the Smythe Library refurbishment, the Universities & Careers Department was located above the CCF building.

The real shift came when we moved to a central spot in the redesigned library. Our open-door policy turned us into a bustling hub, with boys dropping in for advice on university applications and career plans.

Our role has since evolved dramatically. Applications to overseas universities have surged, alongside strong interest in Oxbridge, Russell Group and top UK universities. We now offer SAT/ACT preparation, admissions test practice, interview coaching and Year 13 Life Skills sessions. Careers events, both inperson and online, are school calendar highlights.

Being in the centre of the School encourages boys to seek advice more naturally, from work experience to university choices and they often stay in touch after leaving. There’s nothing more rewarding than hearing from an Old Tonbridgian who’s landed their dream job with our support.”

BARTON SCIENCE CENTRE

Opened in 2019, the Barton Science Centre (BSC) is a testament to the success of the ‘Excellence for All’ campaign, which raised over £7 million to bring this state-of-the-art facility to life. This achievement was made possible through the generosity of supporters and The Sir Andrew Judd Foundation.

Named after Sir Derek Barton (MH 32–35), Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry in 1969, the BSC places Tonbridge at the forefront of school science. Featuring cutting-edge laboratories and classrooms, the centre also boasts a central atrium for lectures and exhibitions, an interactive periodic table, a TV wall, a roof garden, a greenhouse, dedicated spaces for long-term project spaces, three libraries, and numerous breakout and study areas.

82.4% of A-level science grades A*- A 96.8% of IGCSE science grades 9-7 (equivalent to A* - A) (Results: 2020 – 2024)

“Every Tonbridge boy passes through the Barton Science Centre at some point in their week. Whether heading to Chapel, moving between lessons, or attending events, boys are surrounded by an environment that naturally sparks curiosity. The foyer showcases student-led projects, interactive displays like the cloud chamber, and striking images captured with a Scanning Electron Microscope (on loan), seamlessly blending science into the everyday.

The BSC has also transformed how science is taught. Its spacious, flexible labs and classrooms support a shift from traditional teaching to hands-on, studentled learning. Boys design experiments, solve problems and collaborate in teams, with learning extending beyond textbooks to interactive walls and desks, revealing a classroom where learning comes alive. Equipped with advanced digital tools and universitylevel research technology, the BSC fosters independent thinking, critical inquiry and a genuine passion for STEM.”

SHARING OUR EXPERTISE

DEVELOPING SPORTING TALENT

TONBRIDGE SCHOOL CENTRE

In 2005, the School launched a visionary campaign to transform its sports facilities, aiming to provide world-class resources while offering a more verse range of sports for all boys. With the generous support of over 700 parents, Old Tonbriians and friends, and The Sir Andrew Ju Foundation, the Tonbrie School Centre (TSC) was completed in 2008.

“During my time as Director of Sport, one of the greatest strengths of the Tonbridge Sports Centre (TSC) has been its ability to provide worldclass facilities that supports students across a wide range of sports and levels of experience and ability.

I recall that an Old Tonbridgian from the 1960s once telling me, “If you didn’t play rugby, you simply ‘ran.’” This simple reflection highlights just how dramatically Tonbridge’s sporting landscape has evolved. Today, the TSC has been key to the development of numerous sports, supporting our students’ growth and providing inspiration to achieve at the highest levels.

One of the most notable benefits of the TSC is its ability to support yearround training, a game-changer for

20+

Sports

many sports. This has been particularly impactful for our cricket team, which has consistently ranked among the top in the country over the past decade, reaching two T20 Finals Days, a testament to both the players’ talent and the facilities that support their development.

Beyond cricket, our basketball and badminton teams continue to grow in participation and performance. Our climbers excel in HMC competitions, and our swimmers regularly reach national finals,

reflecting the breadth of opportunities now available. The TSC gym enhances students' athletic development, focusing on performance, well-being, and injury prevention; core values of Tonbridge’s sporting culture. The continued growth and success of our sports teams clearly demonstrate the value of the TSC. Its top-tier facilities, expert coaching and commitment to holistic development have not only supported high-performance athletes but also fostered a culture of excellence and well-being that benefits all students.

“A long tradition of sporting excellence, emphasising its ethos of participation by all. Everyone has the chance to play in a team – sport is for life here and for all to enjoy. Every imaginable sport – fives, ultimate frisbee, fencing, water polo, sailing – with Novi encouraged to have a go at everything. In short, plenty of choice if you’re not first XV material.”

COMMUNITY IMPACT IN ACTION

Visit the Centre any evening and you’ll see Tonbrie School open to a wider community, with Tonbriians sharing the facilities with local groups. From events for less ableboed athletes to swimming lessons for primary schools and aspiring athletes using the track, the Centre reflects our commitment to benefiting the community.

The Good Schools Guide, 2024

“For me, the TSC was the heart of the School. I spent a lot of time there, whether it was evenings in the gym, where there was a real sense of community, or making use of the amazing facilities. As a keen cricketer too, I enjoyed the nets on Monday nights, swimming in the pool with boys from my House, and so much more. There is truly something for everyone, and I look back on those times with really fond memories.”

Ben Earl, (FH 11-16)

“The impact of the TSC on my career has been immense and continues to have a profound impact on the current and future generations. This was only possible thanks to the support of the Foundation donors.”

Zak Crawley, (WH 11-16)

WORLD CLASS FACILITIES

The multi-million pound TSC is an Olympic-standard training venue and was used by the Australia athletics team during the London 2012 Games. A host of other leading international and professional sportspeople use the centre and other School facilities on a regular basis. In June 2024, the West Indies cricket team came to Tonbridge for Test Match training camp.

“TSC professionally wraps itself around its pupils, the community, and local Sports Clubs, to integrate everyone into an open, friendly and inclusive sporting family. ‘The team’ should be very proud of what it achieves in, and for Tonbridge. Long may it continue.”

“The key to Tonbridge being the exceptional place that it is, is that it does place this tremendous focus on what kind of man you are going to be once you leave School. Are you going to be someone who makes a broader contribution to society? Are you going to be someone who is kind, who is decent? All of these characteristics will be enhanced by the School embracing a diversity of boys rather than only being able to cater for boys from a particular socio-economic background. So, we support the Foundation Award Programme to enable Tonbridge, in some small way, to be an even better place where that variety of backgrounds amongst the boys plays into the sense of duty, responsibility, humility and decency that are at the heart of a Tonbridgian.”

WHERE THERE’S A WILL

Bill Brown, MA, DFC (Sc 1934-38) was one of the founding members of the Judde Society. After studying at Cambridge, Bill worked as an engineer and later as a government scientist in naval intelligence following the war. Tonbridge School was Bill’s spiritual home, and he held a deep fondness for the School and its staff. His generous legacy was instrumental in bringing the Barton Science Centre to life.

Reflecting on his decision to pledge a legacy, he remarked, “High standards in education are essential to civilisation. I believe Tonbridge can make excellent use of what I leave behind by nurturing individuals who can think critically and contribute meaningfully: that’s a good legacy to leave.”

JUDDE SOCIETY

The Judde Society was created to recognise those who have made provision for the Tonbridge School Foundation in their Will.

WE COULDN’T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU. THANK YOU!

“A Foundation Award is a gift that lasts far beyond a boy’s years at the School. I will be forever grateful for the memories, life-long friendships and formative experiences that have shaped me in my personal and professional life to this day. I can’t summarise how life-changing a Foundation Award is. It defines someone forever, and it also defines the School.”
