COVER:

the bayou HOW MANY PAGES? That’s right, this is our biggest brochure to date! We’re doing our bit to help the environment, so we’re lowering the number of brochures we print from five to three a year. But fear not, we’ll still have a plethora of shows and events for you to get your teeth into… Our cover stars are the fantastic 1927, who are returning to us in December and January with THE ANIMALS AND CHILDREN TOOK TO THE STREETS (p28). If you saw Golem when it was here, you know how good they are. If you didn’t, you need to see to believe! Music is the beating heart of TOM and this season, not only do we have our usual splendour of music gigs on offer but we are super excited to present a programme of gig-theatre shows you’re going to love. What’s Gig-Theatre you ask? It’s as it says: part-gig, parttheatre, all-extraordinary. The genre-defying BEN CAPLAN stars in OLD STOCK: A REFUGEE LOVE STORY (p14). He has a soulful and raspy voice, which reminds us of Tom Waits. Combine this with shades of Once, The Musical and throw in an unbelievably powerful storyline and the result is a raw, witty treasure but also a poignant allegory for the refugee crisis of today. Award-winning musician and theatre maker DOM COYOTE presents his new sci-fi infused show WE CAN TIME TRAVEL (p15), and Paines Plough invite you on a journey through thirty years of dance-floor classics in POP MUSIC (p17). If you’re aged 16-25, then we’ve got just the ticket for you. Our new 1625 SCHEME gets you in to see the shows you love for just £5 each! Keep an eye out for the 1625 symbol in the brochure, or check out our website for our full listings. Plus, there’s the purr-fect treat for the family in the form of TABBY McTAT (p26), comedy from Irish funny-man JASON BYRNE (p21), an Agnes Varda Double Bill courtesy of TOM’S FILM CLUB (p6) and the welcome return of Ru Paul’s Drag Race favourite JINKX MONSOON with MAJOR SCALES in their brand new show THE GINGER SNAPPED (p23). France’s answer to Fleabag sees Laetitia Dosch explode onto the screen as Paula, a chaotic, impulsive thirty-something in Paris.

Tue 4 Sep, 8pm £6 Book two or more films in the same

This inventive thriller is a brutal and defiantly masterful film by uncompromising British filmmaker Lynne Ramsay. (limited availability) Aided by Thomas Townend’s Rated 15 remarkable cinematography 97 mins and Jonny Greenwood’s immersive electronic score, You Were Never Really Here is a devastating portrayal of a man wrestling with years of repression and abuse while engaged in a cycle of violence he cannot control.

Back in Paris after a long transaction absence and finding the key and save £1 per to her boyfriend’s apartment ticket no longer works, Paula goes 16/25 tickets £5 on an erratic “voyage de la (limited availability) loon” around the city - brokenRated 15 hearted, self-destructive, and 95 mins with only her ex’s cat’s deadpan stares to rely on. By her nature unable to do anything but live in the moment, we watch as Paula tries her best to reclaim a measure of stability, making new allies and seeing the reappearance of figures from her past.

The film saw Ramsay win Best Screenplay at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, and won Phoenix a well-deserved Best Actor Award for his intense and unsettling performance.

First-time director Léonor Serraille’s debut feature film, this live-wire comedy is a study in humour and urgency exploring modern life’s everyday misfortunes. French with English subtitles.

Cléo From 5 To 7 (PG)

The Gleaners and I (U)

Shot in Paris during the height of the Sixties, Varda’s second film tells the story of Cléo, a pop singer who passes her time drifting through different locations and conversations while awaiting the results of a vital and potentially lifechanging medical examination.

During the dawn of the digital age in the late 1990s and early 2000s, The Gleaners and I emerged as one of the first true masterpieces to evolve from the new and (at the time) relatively unexplored format.

A forerunner to the French New Wave, Cléo from 5 to 7 was a truly trailblazing exercise in film narrative, shot in a documentary-like fashion to capture reality as true-to-life as cinematically possible. The film also has a famous ‘silent filmwithin-a-film’ segment, which all film connoisseurs will love, as it contains cameos by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina. French with English subtitles.

Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cry and sometimes we try our best to distract ourselves. But don’t worry, it’s okay, we’re dealing with it. After a sell-out run at Brighton Fringe 2016, and two sell out UK tours 2017/2018, It’s Okay, I’m Dealing With It asks what we do when things aren’t okay. Through their multi award-winning combination of dance, comedy, chat and song, Cristina MacKerron and Chess Dillon-Reams unravel their own struggles and vulnerabilities and try to piece together how to cope with them.

The Beatles ‘White Album’

50th Anniversary Show

Following on from their sold out May show at TOM, the Brighton Beach Boys and The Psychedelic Love Orchestra return once more to perform The White Album. Fifty years old this year, released November 1968 and two years ahead of schedule, The Beatles offers a soundtrack to the Sixties, marking a change from the technicolour energy of Sgt Pepper, with its blank sleeve and spiky musicality.

Soon rechristened The White Album, the double album almost predicts the fragmentary nature of the close of the decade, reflected in the chaotic panoply of songs and sounds on such classics as: Back in the USSR, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter, Blackbird, Ob-La Di, Ob-La- Da, Dear Prudence and more.

1927 presents:

The Animals & Children Took To The Streets We are delighted to welcome back the awardwinning theatre company 1927 (previously at TOM with the stunning show Golem). Like a giant novel burst into life, we invite you on a theatrical journey of startling originality. Welcome to the Bayou, a part of the city feared and loathed wherein lies the infamous Bayou Mansions; a sprawling stinking tenement block, where curtain-twitchers and peeping-toms live side by side, and the wolf is always at the door. When Agnes Eaves and her daughter arrive late one night, does it signal hope in this hopeless place, or has the real horror only just begun? Seamlessly synchronising live music, performance and storytelling with stunning films and animation, this is the wickedly twisted international hit tale from the multiple award-winning company behind Golem and The Magic Flute.
