COVER:

SUMMERTIME! Good golly gosh, we love the Summer. We also love Festival Season in Brighton - a time when the city comes alive, there’s a buzz in the air and anything you can think of is probably going on somewhere (easy now...) Here at TOM, we are delighted to present a bevy of delightful, astonishing and insightful events. Included in this is the welcome return of the BARELY METHODICAL TROUPE, who will be presenting their new show SHIFT (p16). Expect breathtaking acrobatics and moving story-telling, a great treat for family and friends this May half-term. Our live events quieten down over the summer months, but we’ll still have goodies on offer courtesy of TOM’S FILM CLUB. We have some cracking films from 1999, including office-favourites SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT (p19) and FIGHT CLUB (p20), as well as the return of our August Animations mini-season, which includes the stunning Academy Award nominated anime MIRAI (p25). Other highlights include events curated by THE NORDIC NETWORK (from p8) and BRIGHTON FESTIVAL (from p13), the spoken-word slamfest that is POETS V MCS - BRIGHTON V SHEFFIELD (p5) and post-modern stand-up / tomfoolery from a returning TONY LAW (p4). Thank you so much for your continued support, we can’t wait for you to join us for what is sure to be another cracking Festival Season!

ANDREA GIBSON LORD OF THE BUTTERFLIES

WINNER OF THE FIRST EVER WOMEN OF THE WORLD POETRY SLAM IN 2008, ANDREA GIBSON REMAINS ONE OF THE MOST CAPTIVATING PERFORMERS IN THE SPOKEN WORD POETRY SCENE TODAY. In a fierce oscillation between activism and love, their newest book, Lord of the Butterflies, looks at themes of gender, romance, loss and family. A book of protest that riots against gun violence, homophobia and white supremacy, Gibson also celebrates gender expansion, queer love and the will to stay alive. Each emotion in it is deft and delicate, resting within imagery heavy enough to sink the heart, while giving the body wings to soar.

STOP MAKING SENSE (PG) SHOT OVER THE COURSE OF A FEW NIGHTS AT THE HOLLYWOOD PANTAGES THEATRE BY THE LATE GREAT JONATHAN DEMME, THIS IS THE SEMINAL AND CELEBRATED CONCERT FILM THAT WAS PRODUCED AT THE HEIGHT OF TALKING HEADS’ POPULARITY, JUST AS THE GROUP WERE STARTING TO TOUR AND PROMOTE THEIR ALBUM, SPEAKING IN TONGUES, IN 1983. The film showcases a truly unique and energetic performance, utilising every element of the stage to create a concert experience like no other. Big lamps, big sets and big suits all come into play throughout the show, but it’s the bands phenomenal performance and idiosyncratic style that shine through the theatrics. THE IRON GIANT (U)

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS SINCE THE RELEASE OF THIS ANIMATED GEM BEFORE DIRECTING PIXAR CLASSICS LIKE THE INCREDIBLES AND RATATOUILLE, BRAD BIRD MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF WITH THIS CHARMING ANIMATION ABOUT THE UNLIKELY BOND BETWEEN A BOY AND A FIFTY FOOT ROBOT FROM OUTER SPACE. Another great film from the class of 1999, The Iron Giant still resonates today for its enduring message of friendship, its effortless blending of both traditional and computer animation, and its American Graffiti-style 1950s soundtrack. Plus, it has a surprising voice cast including Jennifer Aniston and Vin Diesel! Based upon the 1968 story Iron Man by British poet Laureate Ted Hughes, a huge robot falls from outer space and crash-lands in a small American town, terrifying the locals with its fearsome and otherworldly appearance. The kind giant finds acceptance and companionship from an intelligent but lonely boy named Hogarth Hughes, but trouble looms on the horizon when a corrupt government agent sets his sights on destroying the visitor.
