WHY HELLO THERE, HOW DO YOU DO? Thank you for picking up a copy of our latest brochure. It’s Festival season here at TOM, and we couldn’t be happier to host some of the biggest and best events during this time as part of Brighton Fringe, Brighton Festival, The Great Escape and Artists Open Houses.

Over the half-term week, we have a bevy of shows courtesy of BBC 6 Music’s Poet-in-Residence Murray Lachlan Young, spearheaded by the deliciously gothic show THE MYSTERY OF THE RADDLESHAM MUMPS (p13). This will be a real treat for the whole family!

We’re really excited to be presenting the world premiere of WES BANDERSON (p7), a brand new six-piece multi-instrumental outfit that will be performing tracks from all the iconic Wes Anderson films (and a few hidden gems as well). This is the first show to be supported by our Gig for a Gig scheme, to find out more about the initiative, check out our website.

As well as this, we have the welcome return of the MOVES FESTIVAL (p17), comedy courtesy of NINA CONTI (p16) and MAE MARTIN (p18), a programme of cinema from the Far East as part of TOM’S FILM CLUB (p23-25) and cabaret from global drag icon BENDELACREME (p21). We’ll see you soon!

60 seconds with...

adam znaidi You know him as the bassist from The Physics House Band and The GO! Team. Now, Adam Znaidi brings his latest project to TOM for its world premiere. We sat down with him for a quick natter about the project and what to expect when you see it... Hey Adam! How are you doing today? Great thank you - I’m just finishing up the last of the song arrangements for the show. So do tell, how did the Wes Banderson project come about? I wanted to do a live session video of Ping Island Lightning Strike from The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, then realised that no one had actually created a full show of music from his films. After a couple of years of planning and false starts, I applied for funding, spoke to yourselves and Pink Mist about doing the first performances, and the rest just slotted into place. This is probably a daft question, but we’re guessing you’re a big fan of Wes Anderson? Yes indeed. His films have had a huge influence on me, and definitely helped develop my knowledge and appreciation of cinema. Right, a question to put you on the spot favourite Wes Anderson film and why? The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. A lot of

6

reasons - it’s a film about filmmaking and the creative process itself. The colours, outfits, music and overarching Jaques Cousteau reference all make it a really beautiful watching experience. I feel like it’s him at his most meta. Also Bill Murray. You’ve got a pretty awesome band, where did you find your fellow ‘Bandersons’? They’re all absurdly talented friends that I’ve either been in bands with or gigged with over the years. It has pretty much been an excuse to put together a supergroup of people I enjoy spending time with. Final question: why should people come and see you guys live? If you want to watch the ultimate musical tribute to Wes Anderson, with a deep dive into the beautiful sounds that make the audio backdrop of his films, then this show is for you. From the animations projected behind us, to the Team Zissou outfits, via exciting new arrangements of tunes by Mark Mothersbaugh, Alexander Desplatt and Sven Libaek, there is something here for everyone.

ADAM ZNAIDI AND THE OLD MARKET

WES BANDERSON SAT 9-MON 11 MAY, 20:00 £16.50 (£12.50 CONC.) 16 25 / £5 (limited) AGE 14+ (RECOMMENDED) Supported using public funding from Arts Council England and TOM’s Gig for a Gig scheme. This show is not affiliated with or endorsed by Wes Anderson, but we reckon he’d love it.

A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE AND IDOSYNCRATIC DIRECTORS OF OUR GENERATION. In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last 20 years, Wes Anderson is the auteur behind the iconic films The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom, Isle of Dogs and many more. Now you can sit back and experience the music of these iconic films

live, all performed by a sixpiece multi-instrumentalist band led by Adam Znaidi (The Physics House Band and The GO! Team) for your listening pleasure. This event is proudly supported by the Gig for a Gig scheme, where established artists support the next generation of talent by donating a performance at TOM. Find out more by visiting our website.

BERT & NASI

THE END

JAZ WOODCOCK-STEWART WITH MORGANN RUNACRE-TEMPLE

CIVILISATION

In this new piece created in collaboration with Laura Dannequin, Bert & Nasi dance the end of their relationship, imaging how a future without each other might look.

A day in the life of a woman following a tragic event. An experiment in theatrical realism and contemporary dance.

Projected onto a screen above the stage, two parallel narratives run alongside each other: the end of the Earth and of their collaboration. A poignant, sad and funny account of the ongoing ecological crisis. This is both a reminder and a celebration of our own mortality, and that of everything around us. To book, visit brightonfestival.org

Jaz Woodcock-Stewart from awardwinning company Antler collaborates with choreographer Morgann Runacre-Temple. From the creator behind critically acclaimed Lands, Civilisation is a sideways look at the untheatrical reality of loss. Music by ABBA and Bach. To book, visit brightonfestival.org

Please note: real meat is used on stage. In association with Ovalhouse & Marlborough Theatre, Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund & Bishopsgate Institute.

HURLED WORDS. THROWN OBJECTS. DODGED BURGERS. After someone threw a burger at them and shouted a transphobic slur, performance artist Travis Alabanza became obsessed with burgers. How they’re made, how they feel and smell. How they travel through the air. How the mayonnaise feels on your skin.

This show is the climax of their obsession - exploring how trans bodies survive and how, by reclaiming an act of violence, we can address our own complicity. Carving out a place for themselves as one of the UK’s prominent trans voices, Alabanza presents a performance that is timely, unsettling and powerful.

MAE MARTIN SAP | + SUPPORT

The co-writer and star of Channel Four sitcom Feel Good, and star of her own Netflix standup special returns to The Old Market! In her brand new show, Mae looks at the uphill battle of trying to do the right thing in a world that sometimes seems to have lost its moral compass. With her characteristically manic self-reflection, she bounces between vice and virtue, optimism and pessimism, the urge to be our best selves versus the urge to gleefully give in to our more base instincts. But it's not all big questions - there's also a lot about sloths, moose, hots dogs, love, and tree sap.

BRIGHTON BEACH BOYS

TOM’S FILM CLUB

LET IT BE

AND THEN WE DANCED (15)

The Brighton Beach Boys will recreate the last studio album release of The Beatles, Let It Be. Released in May 1970, a month after the announcement of the break-up of the band, it’s a postscript to their career. A hit on both sides of the Atlantic, it won the Oscar for best film score and boasts a series of classic moments. Be it the straight rock of I’ve Got a Feeling or the gospel-tinged Let It Be, folky harmonising of Two of Us or Harrison’s blues drama of I, Me, Mine, this is an album with texture and depth, changes and surprises. The band will accompany the recreation of Let It Be with a selection of songs from the period; hits and near misses, loves and lost adventures an evening to celebrate.

A passionate tale of love and liberation set amidst the ultraconservative confines of modern Georgian society, the film follows Merab, a devoted dancer who has been training for years for a spot in the National Georgian Ensemble. The arrival of another male dancer throws Merab off balance, sparking both an intense rivalry and romantic desire that may cause him to risk his future in dance as well as his relationship with his family. This gripping love story is full of energetic choreography and features an extraordinarily physical lead performance from dancer Levan Gelbakhiani. In Georgian with English subtitles.

FIRST LOVE (15)

KUSAMA: INFINITY (12A)

Blood, gore, severed heads, but with a tender love story at its heart - Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, 13 Assassins) is back with his 103rd film. Leo, a young boxer down on his luck and faced with a life-threatening illness, meets his ‘first love’ Yuri, who also goes by “Monica,” a sex worker and an addict, though still an innocent. Unwittingly caught up and embroiled in a drug-smuggling heist, Leo and Monica find themselves pursued through one night by a corrupt cop, a Yakuza, his nemesis, and a female assassin hired by the Chinese Triads, who are all baying for blood. This will be the launch night and preview for this year’s Scalarama Sussex, a month-long celebration of cinema every September across Brighton and beyond. In Japanese with English subtitles.

An immersive and illuminating documentary 17 years in the making with a legendary artist over fifty as the focus, plus a couple of short films still to be confirmed for the night. Exploring Yayoi Kusama’s fierce determination to become a world-renowned artist, the film documents her entire life-story, from her early years in a conservative family in rural Japan to how she found her way to America on the heels of WWII – without any connections and speaking only broken English, she devoted herself to her one true love, making art. Director Heather Lenz captures the eccentric essence of this fascinating figure, while also making a bigger statement about overlooked female artists and artists of colour. In English and Japanese with English subtitles.
