(Poppy’s)participationintheSpokane Bloomsdayrace,a12kmracethathasbeentaking placeinSpokanesince1977.Notonlywasheone oftheoriginalracers,butforalmost40years PoppycontinuedtoraceineveryBloomsdayrace. Today,it'sthelargesttimedroadraceintheUnited Statesandthefourthlargestintheworld,withover 50,000participants.

Thecoursetakesrunnersthroughthe streetsofSpokane,startingandendingatthe SpokaneRiver.Alongtheway,runnersarecheered onbyenthusiasticvolunteers,familymembers,and friends.Thecourseismostlyflatbutdoesboasta singular,challenginghill.Knownbyracersand localsalike,Doomsdayhillisatreacherousstretch ofascendingpavementthatlookslikeariverof coloronedayeachyear.Poppycalledit“hearthill.” Irememberaskinghimaboutthisnameandhe explainedtomeallthebenefitshisheartwould havefromracingupthehillandthatitwasthepart oftheraceheloved.Eventhen,Iadmiredhis positivespin.

TeenandKidCloset.Thisisanot-for-profit organizationdedicatedtoprovidingteensand childrenwithclothingandotheritemsessentialfor theirhealthandwellbeing.Poppywasproudin knowinghisparticipationintheracehelped supportsuchworthwhilecauses.

MyGrandpaJoewillcontinuetobean inspirationtomeofhowimportantitistogiveback tothecommunityandstayactiveandhealthy.In additiontohiscommitmenttoBloomsday,hehad manyotherorganizationsinwhichheparticipated. Hewasa100-gallonblooddonorlocally,he volunteeredatlocalmountainslayinginthecrosscountrytrailseachseason,andquiteoftenranthe annualBareBunsFunRunatDeerLakeputonby KaniksuRanch,(ourlocalnudistcamp.)Iamhappy tohavemostofthet-shirtshecollectedfromeach oftheseendeavorsandcherishallofthem.

SpokaneBloomsdayismorethanjustarace tochallengeyourfitnessandhealthlevel—it'sa celebrationofcommunity.Everyyear,therace bringstogetherpeoplefromallwalksoflife,now internationally.Whetheryou'reacompetitive runner,speedwalker,orjustenjoytheplethoraof freeconcertsalongthecourse,Bloomsdayisthe perfecteventtokickoffyoursummer!Thereis nothingthatquitematchestheanticipationof seeingtheshirtonracerswhoarewalking backwardafterfinishing.Untilyoureachthefinish

•2tablespoons limejuice,freshlysqueezed

•1cup freshcilantro,chopped

INSTRUCTIONS

•1clove garlic,minced

•1teaspoon honey

•1/2teaspoondried oregano

•1/2teaspoon salt
