What Our Students Say OTHER

WELCOME

Welcome to the 2026 WaterBear Prospectus. We hope you like enough of what’s inside to consider making WaterBear your choice.

WaterBear The College of Music was founded by music education pioneers Adam Bushell and Bruce John Dickinson. Together they each have more than 30 years of experience in professional music and 25 years at the highest level of music education.

Their relentless dedication to supporting musicians is focused on building sustainable long-term careers. Both see WaterBear as the culmination of a lifetime in music. The first WaterBear college opened its doors in Brighton in 2018 and in September 2023, our second college, WaterBear Sheffield became operational.

THE MUSIC INDUSTRY 2026

The music industry has changed drastically over the last 20 years. Far from being a bad thing, global musical output has thrived in that time. While the established industry model has been totally re-invented by young entrepreneurs, music makers have continued to do what they love.

Even through the global pandemic of the early 2020s, music prospered. New, innovative models to make and consume music have emerged and changed the way we do things yet again.

If there’s one thing recent events have shown us, it’s that music will survive anything.

There now exists a new, global community of independent, DIY musicians and artists, able to connect with an audience and take full control of their careers, all the way from grassroots venues to stadium level, and beyond.

These new and exciting ways of making music allow for interesting and diverse careers to be constructed within the glorious world of music making. Musicians now manage multiple income streams and activities.

The industry demands adaptable professionals and at WaterBear, we’ll give you the tools and knowhow to work innovatively and think outside the box.

Just as the music industry has completely transformed, so has music education. Welcome to WaterBear.

KEEPING MUSIC LIVE

Against the backdrop of a rapidly-evolving music industry, support for grassroots live music has become more important than ever.

Local venues and community music scenes are the lifeblood of music, where emerging talent can develop craft, connect with and build audiences, and contribute to a vibrant, diverse cultural ecosystem.

Launched in early 2025, WaterBear’s Keeping Music Live campaign was conceived to support this lifeblood of the industry. It sees WaterBear expand its network of our very own grassroots music venues, and in the autumn of 2025, we’ll be hitting the road with WaterBear musicians and artists to play at and support grassroots music venues in towns and cities up and down the UK.

As AI continues to evolve, it’s crucial we don’t lose sight of the irreplaceable value of human creativity. Live performance, whether on stage or in the studio, is a fundamentally human experience, filled with spontaneity, emotion, and connection, that no algorithm can truly replicate.

By preserving grassroots venues and supporting local gigs and independent artists, WaterBear is helping to further safeguard this human element for the next generation of young musicians and artists.

Investing in grassroots music and venues will ensure that the future of music remains inclusive, expressive, and above all else, human.

WHY CHOOSE WATERBEAR?

WaterBear colleges are owned and run by professional musicians and educators, people with a wealth of experience from the highest levels of the music industry, having lived through the huge changes of the last two decades.

Our courses can be tailored to each individual. Smaller class sizes and specialist mentoring provides every WaterBear student with unrivalled opportunities for work experience and career development.

Whether in Brighton or Sheffield, students studying at WaterBear colleges benefit from what we call our ‘city-wide campus’, meaning you’ll not only learn from within the college walls, but also in venues, studios and other music locations around the area, providing real opportunities to learn from within the music industry from the start.

THE DIY ETHOS

WaterBear is all about the independent, DIY artist, who wants to take full control of their music and their life. We promote a culture of self-belief and determination, with a commitment to high-quality musical output, all of which are keys to success and fundamental to the WaterBear experience. We carefully manage the number of students at each college, allowing space and resource to focus on each individual and offer more of the best work experience and career development opportunities for everyone.

1-1 MENTORING

SMALLER CLASS SIZES

You won’t find big lecture halls here. Classes are restricted in size to smaller groups, something we believe is vital for high-quality learning. Typical class sizes range from 6 to 15. Tutors can therefore spend more time with each person, focussing on personal strengths development and individual learning styles.

Our unique one-to-one mentoring programme is a key part of the WaterBear experience. All students receive allocated 1-1 mentoring time with a diverse group of industry professionals. Your mentoring sessions can really help you focus on those areas where extra support is needed to improve. The WaterBear mentoring programme is structured to provide 1-1 advice, guidance and support in 3 fundamental areas:

Music Industries:

The Music Industries teams are there to help you with any aspect of your professional and career progression, be it artist / band development, A&R, events, gigs, work experience and industry knowhow. If you’re looking for general industry advice and guidance, need a deeper dive into specific areas, or just need a quick sensecheck, they are there to help.

Musical Development:

Choose from a team of freelance tutors and mentors, all of whom on hand to provide specialist subject mentoring to drive the development of a broader skillset. You can cover anything from instrumental and vocal coaching to audio production techniques, primary or additional instrument study, and much more besides –the choice is yours.

Academic Achievement:

The learning support team is on hand to help with all aspects of your academic achievement. Whether it be assessment advice, interpreting feedback or strategies for managing your time and focus, the role of this team is to make sure everything makes sense and you’re set up for academic success.

WORK OPPORTUNITIES AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT

The music industry is all about making solid connections and contacts. It’s an essential part of starting and maintaining your career in music.

WaterBear is a college filled with professional musicians and creatives working across many areas of the industry. You’ll find an incredible network of creative people here who will become your own industry contacts from the moment you arrive, throughout your time here, and beyond.

All WaterBear students get access to regular work experience and career development opportunities. These opportunities can range from festivals, touring, recording, session work, record labels, publishing, PR and marketing campaigns, to live event management, backline tech’ing, musical instrument manufacturers, teaching, studio internships, and more.

It’s the primary job of our Music Industries teams to generate regular opportunities across a broad range of areas.

WaterBear also works with some of the UK’s best-loved festivals and brands that support new music, including ArcTanGent, Tramlines, Glastonbury, Isle of Wight Festival, 2000trees, Breaking Bands, Elderflower Fields, Hard Rock Hell, Ramblin’ Man, Black Deer, and many others.

Check out some of the other industry partners we work with to bring you the best work opportunities on page xxx.

AN IMMERSIVE 360° EXPERIENCE

At WaterBear, your music education goes far beyond just timetabled lectures and seminars. With bookable 1-to-1 mentoring tailored to match your goals, career guidance, work experience and industry opportunities, academic support, in addition to on-demand digital content available from every course at WaterBear, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in a rich and rewarding learning journey.

The Music Industries teams are there to support you with artist and band development, A&R, gigs, festivals, and real-world industry experience, and you can book free time in professional rehearsal and recording studios to polish up and record your music.

You’ll be able to choose additional optional classes in areas like music photography, videography, content creation, music theory, self-development, and music management. Add in clubs, societies, live gigs and events at WaterBear’s venues, virtual meetups, networking and industry development weeks, and you’ve got a full 360° music experience.

FLEXIBLE LEARNING

Whatever your course of study, content from every WaterBear course is available 24/7, for everyone. If you’re studying a campus-based course but can’t get to the college for whatever reason – no problem.

You can log in remotely to the WaterBear VLE and keep up-to-date with your course, access the huge library of course content, and keep in contact with the WaterBear community. This flexible approach to learning allows you to fit study around your life, not the other way around, which is often so important for today’s musicians.

WaterBear is a leading player in both digital learning and classroom-based teaching and learning. All live lectures are backed up with rich online content, discussion groups, feedback forums and tutorials.

There’s also a selection of digital amp and cab simulation options too, and a wide variety of stomp boxes.

You’ll investigate many different playing styles, genres and techniques to hone your own sound. We encourage you to bring a standard 6-string guitar in standard tuning, but it’s fine if you come with 7 or 8 stringed instruments, acoustic guitars, and any other specialist gear you may want to use.

As well as your instrument, every guitarist should have access to a portable, practical amp suitable for small gigs and practice, a metronome, a tuner and ear protection. MUSIC

The Sheffield music scene is legendary. The city has produced some of the UK’s best-known Electronic, Indie, Rock and Pop acts of the last 40 years. And in more recent times, a new breed of self-reliant Sheffield bands and artists have grown world-renowned reputations.

It’s also home to some fantastic events and festivals, such as Tramlines, which continues to attract the biggest bands and thousands of festival goers each year. The city is also home to some iconic music venues such as The Leadmill, Corporation and the City Hall, and famous recording studios such as Yellow Arch.

CULTURE

Over 7% of Sheffield’s population is employed in the creative industries, nearly double the national average. There are many art exhibitions throughout the year hosting works by local artists such as Open Up Sheffield, Art in the Gardens and the Great Sheffield Art Show. Sheffield is also home to the UK’s largest theatre complex outside of London.

The city hosts many festivals – not just music festivals – but also those dedicated to literature, filmmaking, and there’s even the Festival of the Mind, a free festival dedicated to bringing academic research to life in exciting and innovative ways, something very popular with the large student community in Sheffield.

Our Music Industries Teams are there to help and support you across many aspects of your development as a music professional. From band and artist development to personal branding and image, music project advice, A&R, building an audience, getting a gig, booking a tour or helping you find the right musicians and professionals for your band or project, they’ll have it covered. Our students often need more guidance as their careers and music projects start to gather pace, and this is where the MI teams can really help too. Even if you’re just starting out and playing your first gigs, the teams are there to help. Personal sessions with the Music Industries teams can be booked as part of the 1-1 mentoring system.

ARTIST DEVELOPMENT AND A&R

A&R stands for Artists and Repertoire. People who work as A&Rs, traditionally as part of a record label or publishing company, are tasked with the discovery of new talent and the ongoing development of more established bands and artists. At WaterBear, we know it as the Artist Development team. They are always on the lookout for new emerging acts, as well as being on hand to offer help and advice to those more established artists. In today’s fast-moving music industry, raw talent alone isn’t enough to build a lasting career. For many students at WaterBear, receiving the right artist development guidance at the right time can be the transformative.

Artist development is about much more than just improving musical ability. It’s the process of discovering who you are as an artist, shaping your identity, and building a sound, image and brand that can truly connect with audiences. The Artist Development team also plays a critical role in helping our artists understand what the industry needs, how to deliver it authentically, and how to grow through smart collaborations and release strategies. Without clear direction in these areas, even the most promising artists and musicians can lose momentum or fall into bad deals. With the right advice, however, they gain the tools to thrive — creatively, professionally, and personally.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND PARTNERSHIPS

The music industry is all about people. Networking is the lifeblood of it. Through our collective experience across decades of working in music, we draw on our huge network of contacts to offer regular work experience and career development opportunities for all WaterBear students.

We keep our student numbers smaller in order to maximise opportunity for all. Opportunities cover a broad range of activity, from festivals, touring, recording, session work, auditions, record labels, TV and radio, tech companies, publishing, PR and marketing, to live event management, musical instrument manufacturers, studio internships, teaching, merchandise, backline tech’ing, games audio, hospitality and many more.

It’s the job of the Music Industries Teams to continually leverage our network of contacts to bring as many new opportunities as possible. We always encourage our students to be pro-active open-minded about which opportunities to pursue, as you can go for as many as you like and it’s often the case that the initial opportunity will open doors to others.

Opposite are some our industry partners we work with to bring you the best work and career opportunities:

“Sofar Sounds has been something I’ve always wanted to do, so when WaterBear offered it on the Opportunity page I jumped at the chance! After the show I got to play the official Sofar Sounds at the One Garden. This time I played with my band and soaked up every moment. It was so cool to be a part of something that I’ve wanted to do for so long. not once but twice!”

Fari Chiketa (BA (Hons) 3-yr student 2021 - present)

We always welcome feedback from students who’ve taken part in our work and career development opportunities. It helps us celebrate what went well and improve where we can. Here’s what some of our students had to say after getting involved in real-world music industry experiences:

“Being a part of the stage crew at We Out Here festival was an amazing experience and I want to thank you again for the opportunity. I was very lucky to be assigned stage crew on the main stage, I got to work on the back line setting up all the gear for the various artists and assisting the change overs. I was able to meet so many amazing professionals, both crew, artists and managers. Even working for some artists I am a big fan of.

I was able to make some good connections, I have been invited to work as stage crew at Glastonbury next year.”

Ellen Walker (BA (Hons) 3-yr graduate)

“Interning for Last Man Music has been an amazing opportunity to see and experience the inner workings of an independent record label in central London. I couldn’t thank Georgie enough for organising all of this!”

Jordan Houghton BA (Hons) 3-yr student 2018 - 21)

“Waterbear has helped shape my career as a touring guitar technician with While She Sleeps and Malevolence, as well as helping me plan for a future doing what I love.”

I was able to organise meetings with them to discuss my goals, and to try and find job and volunteer opportunities to help build my experience and network. I’ve also been informed directly when a suitable opportunity has come up and Georgie especially has helped with giving me a lot of advice ahead of interviews. I don’t think I could’ve got some of the work experience I have without their help.”

Charlotte Southgate (BA (Hons) 3-yr graduate)

“The Careers and Industry team at WaterBear have supported me over the years from securing a performance slot at TEDX at the Brighton Dome which massively helped my confidence, through to performance opportunities in front of representatives from a major label. They have pushed and helped me reach new targets and goals.”

Networking at WaterBear comes very easy being in a close-knit community as you get to know everyone and feed off each other’s passion to make it in industry.”

Here are some recent testimonials from WaterBear students and graduates:

“I’ve never felt so at home as I do at WaterBear. I feel truly empowered to take my education and my career into my own hands, knowing I have the support of my tutors and peers to help me along the way.

Being taught by industry professionals creates this whole energy of professionalism to the course which really helps bolster responsibility and accountability. Something I struggled with in previous forms of education.”

student)

“The fact that it’s industry led, made by professionals, what more could you want? You want a professional career out of it, why not be taught by the professionals? I can’t thank the Waterbear team enough for what they’ve done and also what they continue to do.”

“Coming to WaterBear has completely changed my chosen path and has been incredibly life-affirming and confidenceboosting. I had the opportunity to go to the MA songwriting residential camp, and from the opportunity everything has changed. I was just going to be a spoken word artist, but now I am veering more into releasing music through a label.”

Francis Gordon (BA (Hons) 2-yr online student)
Daisy Bean (BA (Hons) 3-yr
Jacob Cameron (BA (Hons) 3-yr

“I’ve had so many opportunities through WaterBear, I wish I could go through them all. I’m currently in three original bands – Taking Back Tomorrow, Yoodoo Voodoo and I’m playing drums for Liz Mann who’s a solo artist from Manchester. I’ve also started my own student night here in Sheffield alongside drum lecturing and tutoring, thanks to the support of my tutors. Collaboration wise there are so many people I’ve had the chance to play live and record with."

“The chief benefit of any music course is often the other musicians. It becomes the start of your musical network. Waterbear has a talent for gathering the most hardworking and talented musicians, meaning making lifelong creative connections is inevitable. The smaller class sizes give everyone the opportunity to thrive and the emphasis on self-sustainability left me feeling more prepared for a career in music after completing my MA.”

“I chose to study music business at WaterBear because I run events back home and I wanted to create something massive in Sheffield. Through WaterBear, I got the opportunity to run my own DJ night with other students and had full support from the careers team. I would 100% recommend WaterBear. The connections to the music industry and the people, I’ve been shell shocked at least a hundred times, it is just a great environment.”

“I have a passion in sound and light engineering, WaterBear has helped open so many doors for me resulting in paid lighting work and front of house shadowing. Since starting at WaterBear I have had lots of opportunities including gig performances, studio time, and practice sessions alongside masterclasses about the music industry, songwriting and performing. It is great being surrounded by a really tight-knit musical community every single day. ”

Richardson (MA Graduate) (Skunk Anansie / Feeder)

“This experience is life changing. I didn’t realise how much I fell into victim mode around perceived intelligence. These results are giving me a whole new level of perspective on myself and how I view the world. Mind blown.”

“Through access to so many WaterBear opportunities, my band The Tivolis has made so much progress this last year. The band has gone from being a hobby to now selling out a headline show at Corporation Sheffield and having the opportunity to play to 2000 people on the official Tramlines Fringe stage. For anyone that’s thinking of coming to WaterBear to help their artist journey, I would say do it.”
