WELCOME

Welcome to the WaterBear Prospectus 2025. We hope you like what you see enough to consider making WaterBear your choice. WaterBear – The College of Music was founded by music education pioneers Adam Bushell and Bruce John Dickinson. Together they each have more than 30 years’ experience in professional music and 25 years at the highest level of music education.

Their relentless dedication to supporting musicians is focused on building sustainable long-term careers. Both see WaterBear as the culmination of a lifetime in music.

The first WaterBear college opened its doors in Brighton in 2018 and in September 2023, our second college, WaterBear Sheffield, became operational.

THE MUSIC INDUSTRY 2025

The music industry has changed drastically over the past 20 years. Far from being a bad thing, musical output has thrived in that time. While the established industry model has been totally re-invented by new, young entrepreneurs, music makers have continued to do what they love.

Even through the global pandemic, music prospered. New, innovative models to make and consume music have emerged and changed the way we do things yet again.

If there’s one thing recent events have shown us, it’s that music will survive anything.

There now exists and new, global community of independent, DIY musicians and artists, able to connect with an audience and remain in full control of their career, all the way to stadium level and beyond. There has never been a better time for young musicians to take control of their careers and build an audience.

These new and exciting ways of making music allow for interesting and diverse careers to be constructed within the glorious world of music making.

The music industry has completely transformed, and therefore so must music education. Musicians now manage multiple income streams and activities. The industry demands adaptable professionals.

Here at WaterBear we give you the capabilities and know-how to work innovatively and think outside the box.

We celebrate the individual, the unique and the ground-breaking.

WHY CHOOSE WATERBEAR?

WaterBear colleges are owned and run by professional musicians and educators, people with a wealth of experience from the highest levels of the music industry, having lived through the huge changes of the last two decades.

Our flexible courses are tailored to the individual. Smaller class sizes and specialist mentoring provides every WaterBear student with unrivalled opportunities for work experience and career development.

Whether in Brighton or Sheffield, students studying at WaterBear colleges benefit from what we call our ‘city-wide campus’, meaning you’ll not only learn from within the college walls, but also in venues, studios and other music-based locations around the local area, providing real opportunities to learn from within the music industry from the start.

THE DIY ETHOS

WaterBear is all about the independent, DIY artist, who wants to take full control of their music and their life.

We promote a culture of selfbelief and determination, with a commitment to high-quality musical output, all of which are keys to success and fundamental to the WaterBear experience.

Places at WaterBear are limited and each year our new student intake number is in the hundreds, meaning we can place more focus on each individual and offer the best work experience and career development opportunities for all.

SMALLER CLASS SIZES

You won’t find big classrooms or lecture halls here.

We keep class sizes limited to smaller groups, something we believe is vital for high-quality learning. Typical class sizes range from 6 to 15.

Tutors can therefore spend more time with each person, focussing on personal strengths development and individual learning styles.

1-1 MENTORING

Our unique one-to-one mentoring programme is all part of the WaterBear experience.

It’s designed to drive skills development, and you can cover everything from instrumental and vocal coaching to audio production techniques, career planning and artist development.

All students receive allocated 1-1 mentoring time with highlevel industry professionals. Your mentoring sessions can really help you focus on those areas where extra support is needed to improve.

WORK EXPERIENCE AND CAREERS

The music industry is all about making solid connections and contacts. It’s an essential part of starting and maintaining your career in music. WaterBear is a college filled with professional musicians and creatives working across many areas of the industry.

You’ll find an incredible network of creative people here who will become your own industry contacts from the moment you arrive, throughout your time here, and beyond.

All our students get access to regular work experience and career development opportunities. These range from festivals, touring, recording, session work, record labels, publishing, PR and marketing campaigns, to live event management, backline tech’ing, musical instrument manufacturers, teaching, studio internships, and more.

WaterBear works with some of the UK’s best-loved festivals and brands that support new music, including ArcTanGent, Tramlines, Glastonbury, Isle of Wight Festival, 2000trees, Breaking Bands, Elderflower Fields, Hard Rock Hell, Ramblin’ Man, Black Deer, and many others.

Check out some of the industry partners we work with to bring you the best work opportunities on page 117

FLEXIBLE LEARNING

Whatever your course of study, content from every WaterBear course is available 24/7, for everyone. If you’re studying an on-site course but can’t get to college for whatever reason –no problem. You can log in remotely to the WaterBear VLE and keep up-to-date with your course, access the huge library of course content, and keep in contact with the WaterBear community.

This flexible approach to learning allows you to fit study around your life – not the other way around, which is so important for today’s musicians.

WaterBear is a leading player in both innovative digital learning and classroom-based teaching and learning.

All live lectures are backed up with rich online content, discussion groups, feedback forums and tutorials.

And no matter what course you’re studying, course content for all subjects on every course is available for everyone. This means you’ll have the freedom to choose what you want to study and learn.

FALMOUTH UNIVERSITY

WaterBear is a proud partner and College of Falmouth University, one of the UK’s most prestigious creative arts institutions. Our close relationship with Falmouth ensures consistently high standards of academic quality and student experience. All courses delivered at WaterBear are approved and awarded by Falmouth, meaning you’ll be studying towards a Falmouth University degree or master’s qualification. WaterBear students also get regular opportunities to work collaboratively with students studying at Falmouth University, but there is no requirement for any students studying at WaterBear Brighton and Sheffield to attend the Falmouth University campus.

“The Falmouth University and WaterBear partnership offers students the opportunity to study undergraduate and postgraduate degrees which are designed for independent musicians, delivered in Brighton and Sheffield as well as online and awarded by Falmouth. This unique joint venture builds on Falmouth’s 119year history in creative education, significant course portfolio and experience of delivering online degrees, combined with WaterBear’s student and industry-centred flexible delivery approach. I look forward to further developing this partnership for the ongoing benefit of our students.”

At WaterBear, we take guitar seriously. Guitarists will learn in small groups of no more than 12, with every musician plugged into a Boss Katana for personal monitoring. You can also reference a variety of vintage and modern valve amps, from classic AC30’s, Plexi’s and JCM 800s, to a selection of modern options from Diesel and Victory. There’s also a selection of digital amp and cab simulation options too, and a wide variety of stomp boxes.

To reach your full potential, you’ll need to be taught by great tutors. At WaterBear, we have some of the best tutors and mentors in the UK today. As working professionals, the tutoring and visiting faculty team may be subject to occasional change and availability may vary.

Our visiting faculty also bring their wealth of experience in the form of in-class masterclasses and Q&A sessions throughout the year.

You’ll get the opportunity to learn the instrument inside out. You’ll investigate many different styles, genres and techniques to hone your own sound. We encourage you to bring a standard 6 string guitar in standard tuning, but we also love to see players arrive with 7 or 8 stringed instruments, acoustic guitars, and any other specialist gear you may want to use. Be open to innovative tunings too, as musical diversity is absolutely valued. Pedals? The more the merrier, but a decent tuner is the probably the most important.

Other essentials every guitar player will need include a portable, practical amp suitable for small gigs and practice, a metronome, and ear protection. Don’t feel pressured into having expensive gear though, as it’s perfectly possible to get great tones on budget equipment if you know how to make the most of it.

In addition to accessing the WaterBear facilities, the ability to record to a reasonable standard at home is also very useful.

As a bassist at WaterBear, you are likely to be in high demand as we usually get lots of bands and artists looking for proficient Bass players! We keep our class sizes smaller, and you’ll be plugging into your own Ampeg amp in class, as well as getting regular access to a range of professional backline.

In class you will spend time working on a wide range of styles, theory and technique, essential knowledge for any professional Bass player. We encourage you to bring a standard 4-string Bass guitar in standard tuning, but we also love to see players arrive with 5 or 6-string instruments, acoustic basses, and any other specialist gear you may want to use. As a student of vocals at WaterBear, you’ll learn your craft in small groups of no more than 12, in a supportive and creative environment. It’s a learning experience that’s designed to support and encourage individual personal development. You’ll get to explore the full capabilities of your voice and develop a wide repertoire to broaden your vocal range and boost confidence.

Our team of vocal tutors and mentors, all working professionals with incredible CVs, will provide you with valuable insights and perspectives via masterclasses, workshops, lectures, and 1-1 mentoring. Mic technique, posture, tone, breathing, vocal health and confidence are all areas of focus, and you’ll get loads of live performance opportunities to hone your stagecraft.

There’s also WaterBear Voices, our weekly vocal collective. WaterBear Voices is a great place to network and meet new people, and the choir gets regular opportunities for work such as live performances, recordings and other opportunities with artists and bands both in and out of WaterBear.

Although WaterBear will provide you with all the equipment you’ll need for the course, we recommend all vocalists should invest in their own mic (Shure SM58 or similar) and be able to record yourself to a reasonable standard at home.

If you really want to play great drums, you’ll need to get regular time behind an acoustic kit. That’s why all drum students at WaterBear learn in small groups of no more than 5, in a dedicated drum room on professional-standard acoustic kits.

You’ll also need regular access to great tutors, and at WaterBear, we have some of the best tutors and mentors operating in the UK today – just take a look at their CVs.

Our exclusive equipment partnerships mean that WaterBear drummers will use topof-the-range kits by British Drum Company and cymbals by Paiste, all mounted on sturdy Gibraltar hardware.

We also provide military-grade practice pads by Bill Sanders, for that all-important pad work, essential for keeping your hands in trim.

Although WaterBear provides all necessary equipment for you to use in classes and live performances, we also recommend all drummers coming to study here should have regular access to their own gear. This is because it’s highly likely you’ll be doing your own gigs soon after you start with us, if you aren’t already.

Other essentials every drummer must have include a metronome, practice pad and ear protection, as we all know how loud drums can be – which is one of the reasons we love them.

This course can motivate you to reach your full potential, cut through the noise, and get your music heard.

All interaction with your course leader, tutors, guests and fellow students happens via online video conferencing and all course content is accessed via WaterBear’s Virtual learning Environment (VLE), Canvas.

This flexible approach allows for more time to complete your studies and may be more suited to those looking for a less intensive, more adaptable study programme. Studying the course in a part time mode also means those claiming benefits such as Universal Credit may still be able to do so while they study.

As an online student, you’ll still get access to all the great opportunities available from events, festivals, conferences and career development activities; how much you want to get involved with is up to you.

WaterBear colleges are based in the heart of Brighton and Sheffield, two amazing UK cities with incredible musical roots and heritage.

The city-wide campus approach sees our students working and learning in locations around the city, as well as in the main college buildings, all of which are situated a locally to main transport routes, shopping areas, and of course, recreation and nightlife.

We partner with the local music industry to ensure our students get regular time in professional recording studios, rehearsal rooms and music venues as part of the WaterBear student experience.

We want WaterBear musicians and artists to be making the most of these fantastic venues for maximum exposure and networking opportunities in the local music scene.

Brighton is one of the greatest cities in England for music, nightlife and the creative arts. A city by the sea, Brighton is one of the UK’s most exciting places to live, bursting with creativity and famed for its eclectic culture, with WaterBear situated in the very heart of it. And the beach is fantastic too. Located on the South Coast, you can get here from London by train in under one hour.

MUSIC

Music is at the heart of what makes Brighton such an incredible place. This is why we’re here. You’ll always be able to find something to listen to or get involved with. It’s home to a diverse range of bands and artists, with gigs on every night of the week. The city also hosts The Great Escape Festival, one of the largest festivals for new music in the world, where more than 450 established and emerging artists from all over the world perform each year. The WaterBear Venue, our very own music and club venue on the beachfront, is a central part of the local music scene and plays host to a diverse range of local, national and international bands, artists and DJs.

BRIGHTON BEACH

Brighton’s seafront is the perfect location to soak up the sun in the summer, walk along the promenade and check out the amazing shops, cafes, bars and restaurants with a sea view. As well as The WaterBear Venue, there are nightclubs, the beach, water sports, the famous West Pier, The Brighton Palace Pier, The British Airways i360, and loads more.

THE NORTH LAINE

Brighton’s renowned North Laine area is right on our doorstep. Its small streets and alleyways are packed full of quirky boutiques, vintage shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. The North Laine has a huge selection of independent shops and is bursting with activity. It’s also the perfect place to grab a great coffee and just watch the world go by.

NIGHTLIFE

Brighton is world-famous for its vibrant nightlife culture, with lots of clubs and music venues offering something for everyone. There are countless pubs and restaurants, independent cinemas and a fantastic live music scene.

CULTURE

Brighton hosts a large number of arts, music, culinary and cultural events and festivals each year. The Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe are two of the biggest events, featuring theatre, music, art and visual media. All year round there are theatre productions, art exhibitions, gigs and events at many of the city’s venues, theatres, pubs, museums and galleries. The UK’s biggest LGBTQ+ event, Brighton Pride, is one of the city’s major showpiece events. Performing arts is also a big attraction within the city, with venues such as The Theatre Royal featuring West End productions throughout the year. The city is also host to many pubs housing small theatres within their premises.

WATERBEAR BRIGHTON FACILITIES

As a college run by professional musicians, we know everything about equipment and what kind of gear you need access to. Drummers learn on acoustic kits, guitarists and bassists plug into their own amps, music producers and electronic artists work with the latest tech and equipment. And everyone can use all the other great gear in the college. Teaching spaces are fitted out with state-of-the-art digital A/V technology. You’ll also find classic vintage gear alongside modern musical equipment to give you the best of both worlds.

WaterBear Brighton has 3 college buildings in the heart of the city:

WATERBEAR BRIGHTON HQ

WBBHQ is situated in Brighthelm Gardens, a green space in the middle of town about 4 minutes’ walk from the central train station. This is where you’ll find our Mac Suites, mentoring rooms and general-purpose teaching spaces, all with our unique WaterBear style. It’s also where we run our open day events.

WATERBEAR BOND ST.

We have a second building located in the heart of the North Laine area on one of Brighton’s best-known streets, Bond St. Here you’ll find more dedicated teaching space with additional Mac Suite and DJ practice facilities. It’s also above one Brighton’s best loved coffee houses, where our artists and musicians regularly perform.

THE WATERBEAR VENUE

This is WaterBear’s very own seafront music and club venue. Located right on the beach, this iconic venue was once one of Brighton’s most famous club venues. Now exclusively operated by WaterBear, it’s a great place for our musicians to socialise, with lots of events happening throughout the week. The Venue is also available to be booked by students for their own music projects, and there are regular opportunities for work there too.

OTHER VENUES

As well as our own venues, we believe in the importance of using other established Brighton venues for teaching and learning too. This is a great way to grow your network and be working with people who are known and busy in the local scene. Here are some of the places we work with on a weekly basis:

BRIGHTON ELECTRIC STUDIOS

Brighton Electric is one of Brighton best known recording and rehearsal facilities. It houses 17 practice rooms and 2 high end recording studios. There are also several mix studios and a mastering suite, storage facilities, shop, café and licensed bar. Brighton Electric is a well-known and loved studio, frequented by hundreds of bands and artists at all levels. It’s a fantastic place to be to meet new, like-minded people busy in the local scene.

SMALL POND STUDIOS

Small Pond is a great ‘hang’ and a focal part of the Brighton music scene. There are 8 rehearsal rooms, free to book for all WaterBear students. Small Pond is stocked with great vintage gear, including the recording studio, complete with Neve console, amps and quality analogue outboard gear. The recording studio can also be booked for free by WaterBear students.

SOUTH LANE STUDIOS

South Lanes Studios is situated in the heart of the city’s historic South Lanes area. Offering rehearsal rooms for up to 7-piece bands, as well as doubling up as a recording studio, you’ll have access to loads of great quality gear and have experienced producers on hand to help with your every request.

ALPHABET

Housed in a former Gothic Chapel, The Alphabet is an audio-led HiFi venue with a bohemian theatre ambiance, featuring an art deco bar and a maze of corridors. It is ideal for rehearsals, pre-production, live performance workshops, instrument lessons, and comes equipped with a full backline.

Sheffield is England’s 4th largest and the UK’s greenest city, despite its industrial traditions. Like Brighton, Sheffield is also one of the UK’s premier cities for music. A great musical heritage provides the backdrop for a new generation of self-start, DIY bands and artists who have transformed the modern music industry.

Its strong DIY ethos has been forged from centuries of makers and creatives plying their trade here. The city is also famed for its legendary musical and cultural history, making Sheffield and WaterBear a perfect match.

MUSIC

The Sheffield music scene is legendary. The city has produced some of the UK’s best-known Electronic, Indie, Rock and Pop acts of the last 40 years. And in more recent times, a new breed of self-reliant Sheffield bands and artists have grown world-renowned reputations.

It’s also home to some fantastic events and festivals, such as Tramlines, which continues to attract the biggest bands and thousands of festival goers each year. The city is also home to some iconic music venues such as The Leadmill, Corporation and the City Hall, and famous recording studios such as Yellow Arch.

CULTURE

Over 7% of Sheffield’s population is employed in the creative industries, nearly double the national average. There are many art exhibitions throughout the year hosting works by local artists such as Open Up Sheffield, Art in the Gardens and the Great Sheffield Art Show.

The city also hosts many festivals – not just music festivals – but also those dedicated to literature, filmmaking, and there’s even the Festival of the Mind, a free festival dedicated to bringing academic research to life in exciting and innovative ways, something very popular with the large student community in Sheffield.

The city also boasts the Cultural Industries Quarter, a conservation area that recognises the region’s cultural significance and aims to promote and develop the cultural industries associated with music, art, film and performance. The Cultural Industries Quarter is also home to the new WaterBear Sheffield college HQ.

WATERBEAR SHEFFIELD FACILITIES

Just like our established Brighton college, WaterBear Sheffield is home to a combination of fantastic vintage gear and state-of-the-art digital A/V equipment. Drummers learn on acoustic kits, guitarists and bassists plug into their own amps, and music producers and electronic artists will work with the latest tech and equipment.

WATERBEAR SHEFFIELD HQ

WaterBear Sheffield opened the doors of its city centre HQ in September 2023. Located right in the heart of the Cultural Industries Quarter, our HQ building stands on the old site of the famous Sheffield superclub, Gatecrasher. The building has been transformed to mirror our Brighton HQ building, housing mac suites, general purpose teaching spaces and mentoring rooms. We hold our open day events here and welcome any new students interested in studying at the college to our 1-1 applicant sessions.

OTHER VENUES

As well as our own college building, we believe in the importance of using other established Sheffield venues for teaching and learning too. This is our city-wide campus approach and is a great way to grow your network and be working with people who are known and busy in the local scene. Here are some of the places our students can expect to be working at on a regular basis:

THE LEADMILL

The Leadmill is a world-famous Sheffield music venue and landmark and, having opened its doors in 1980, is the city’s longest running. Over the years it’s regularly played host to some of the city’s biggest names, such as Arctic Monkeys, Human League and Cabaret Voltaire.

CORPORATION

Corporation known locally as The Corp, is a well-established Rock and Indie venue, regularly voted as one of the top 3 live band venue and alternative music night clubs in the UK.

HYBRID 3 STUDIO

A cutting-edge music production and recording space that caters to artists, producers and musicians. It’s equipped with top-tier audio technology including high-quality microphones, mixing consoles and digital audio workstations, making it ideal for recording, mixing, and mastering music. The studio’s acoustically treated rooms provide an optimal environment for capturing sound, whether for solo artists or full bands.

TESLA

Tesla is a long-established Sheffield recording studio, used by WaterBear students for teaching and learning activities as well as for free bookable recording studio time. Located in a former Victorian industrial workshop, the studio has an impressive array of analogue equipment, a great sounding live room and a comfortable, characterful control room. Tesla is owned and operated by Glover, a top-40, Mercury-nominated record producer who’s also part of the WaterBear teaching faculty.

WaterBear prides itself on the culture created by our students and staff.

We’re working at the forefront of a new era in the music industry, driven by artists with a DIY ethic. Our students are a mix of people who all have one thing in common – a passion for music. Here’s what a few have to say about us:

"Since graduating from WaterBear in 2023 I have been doing session work, recently toured with Bug Eyed and have performed with Lilly Knott and Formz in Manchester. I also regularly do session work at South Lanes Studios.

At WaterBear I established a network of not only friends but industry friends as well. Those connections have stood me in good stead on graduation, starting in industry outside of university.

Networking at WaterBear comes very easy being in a close-knit community as you get to know everyone and feed off each other’s passion to make it in industry."

“I’ve never felt so at home as I do at WaterBear. I feel truly empowered to take my education and my career into my own hands, knowing I have the support of my tutors and peers to help me along the way.

Being taught by industry professionals creates this whole energy of professionalism to the course which really helps bolster responsibility and accountability. Something I struggled with in previous forms of education.”

“The thing that makes WaterBear great to me is that we’re always pushed creatively to do whatever we want to do, as a musician that freedom is amazing. WaterBear students also have access to an insane amount of stuff including industry standard practice rooms and recording studios at places like Small Pond and Ooosh! The staff are also incredibly talented and everyone is working in the field right now. I have never felt as creative as I am now I’m at WaterBear and I feel so supported.”

“This experience is life changing. I didn’t realise how much I fell into victim mode around perceived intelligence. These results are giving me a whole new level of perspective on myself and how I view the world. Mind blown.”

“A unique learning environment, awesome tutors that help you whenever you need. When I started the course, I was surprised how personal the contact with the tutors was – if you ran into a problem, they help you ASAP! Every task is preparation for your assessments, and you get the feedback you need for every one of them. I couldn’t imagine how much I would develop as a musician in such a short amount of time. That wouldn’t have been possible without such amazing tutors!”

Finn Anderson (BA (Hons) 3-yr student Brighton 2020-23)

Jay Hargreaves (BA (Hons) 3-yr student Sheffield 2023-26)

“I’ve had so many opportunities through WaterBear, I wish I could go through them all. I’m currently in three original bands – Taking Back Tomorrow, Yoodoo Voodoo and I’m playing drums for Liz Mann who’s a solo artist from Manchester. I’ve also started my own student night here in Sheffield alongside drum lecturing and tutoring, thanks to the support of my tutors. Collaboration wise there are so many people I’ve had the chance to play live and record with."

Cameron Scott (BA (Hons) 3-yr student 2023-26)

“I have a passion in sound and light engineering, WaterBear has helped open so many doors for me resulting in paid lighting work and front of house shadowing. Since starting at WaterBear I have had lots of opportunities including gig performances, studio time, and practice sessions alongside masterclasses about the music industry, songwriting and performing. It is great being surrounded by a really tight-knit musical community every single day. ”

Melanie

Howard (MA

Graduate 2020) (Such Small Hands / The Wedding Present)

“I couldn’t have done the course if it wasn’t so flexible. The work fit in perfectly around being on tour. I was able to work from dressing rooms, vans, hotel rooms and at any hour I chose.”

“I chose to study music business at WaterBear because I run events back home and I wanted to create something massive in Sheffield. Through WaterBear, I got the opportunity to run my own DJ night with other students and had full support from the careers team. I would 100% recommend WaterBear. The connections to the music industry and the people, I’ve been shell shocked at least a hundred times, it is just a great environment.”

“The last year at WaterBear has been fascinating. I truly feel challenged by all our different modules, and learn critical industry skills pretty much every week, both through our online lessons as well as on campus.

The small year groups are a fantastic approach to higher education as learning is so much more individual and personalised, and students are able to progress and develop much, much faster than they would in a crowded campus.

Furthermore, I think it’s vital to mention all the extra effort all our tutors and mentors provide for us constantly, ensuring that we have all the support we need as well as dozens of unmissable opportunities, from gigs and photoshoots, to opportunities to get to know and work alongside big artists through masterclasses. Overall, I highly recommend WaterBear as I believe that it is the new modern approach to teaching and great things will come from completing my time here.”

After the show I got to play the official Sofar Sounds at the One Garden. This time I played with my band and soaked up every moment. It was so cool to be a part of something that I’ve wanted to do for so long. not once but twice!”

Jordan Houghton BA (Hons) 3-yr student 2018 - 21)

“I was offered an internship with The Drop Digital social media company via WaterBear, during my last couple of months of my final year. It was such a great experience and has allowed me to have more hands on experience within the music social media world (working with record labels and festivals), expanding my skillset for my own music/social media.

“Being a part of the stage crew at We Out Here festival was an amazing experience and I want to thank you again for the opportunity. ‘Water Bear’ is the common name for a Tardigrade. Tardigrades are micro creatures, found everywhere on earth. They are the most resilient creatures known. They can survive and adapt to their surroundings, even in outer space. Their resilience and ability to adapt and survive inspires us in everything we do. We love them.
