the Mayor a
When you step foot in Zionsville, it doesn’t take long to realize that you are in a special place. Since William Zion and his business partner Elijah Cross founded our town in 1852, eight generations have called it home and each one has left a mark on the town we love today. In recent years, it has grown to 67-square miles, but that hasn’t changed our essential “small town identity”. Neighbors here know each other by name and care for one another through all stages of life.
Businesses thrive here and we have big plans to make our town even more vibrant in the coming years. At its core, Zionsville strives to be the place where our neighbors and visitors want to live, work, learn, play, and retire. It is our guiding principle for the 21st century – and beyond.
We are also proud of our award-winning school system, which has grown to include 6 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and Zionsville Community High School (home of the Eagles)! Our students perform at a high level and our athletic, intellectual, and performance groups spread positive vibes across the Midwest.
If nature is your passion, our park system covers more than 700 acres, including the Big 4 Rail Trail, which connects our north and south borders, and offers easy access to neighborhoods and parks along the way. It’s a favorite of runners and bikers and is the perfect place to take a stroll with friends, colleagues, partners, children, and pets. The soon-to-be-opened Carpenter Nature Preserve will be a unique oasis for wildlife and conservation in Boone County.
With all we have to offer, Zionsville is about so much more than our unique brick street business district and our beautiful surroundings. Our best asset may very well be the people who live and work here. You will find them in our charming Village, our newer subdivisions, and our historic rural areas. In Zionsville, when we say we live in “community” – it is not just a noun. It’s also a verb.
On behalf of our nearly 35,000 residents, please allow me to welcome you to our town. The smiles you will see are as real as the bricks on our historic main street. If we can do anything to make your stay more enjoyable, please reach out to me or our town staff.
As you read through this publication, you will see why we are proud of our town and all that we have to offer.
In Zionsville, we have one foot in the past, an eye to the future, and open arms for all - whether your visit brings you here for a few hours, a few days or a few generations.
John Stehr, Mayor of Zionsville
THE FRIENDLY TAVERN
In the heart of Zionsville, where tradition meets community spirit, few names are as synonymous with hospitality as Scott Barnes, owner of The Friendly Tavern. In 2024, the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce recognized Barnes’ decades of dedication to the town by awarding him the prestigious Town Crier Award.
The Town Crier Award is one of the Chamber’s highest honors, given annually to an individual who exemplifies outstanding community involvement, leadership, and dedication to the betterment of Zionsville. This prestigious award, named after the historical figure who announced news and events in the town square, symbolizes the recipient’s role as a vocal advocate for the community. Executive Director Mike Hanlon and the Chamber’s selection committee found an undeniable choice in Barnes, whose contributions have extended far beyond the walls of his beloved restaurant.
For over two decades, Barnes has been at the helm of The Friendly Tavern, a cornerstone of the town’s dining scene known for its historic atmosphere and charm, classic pub fare, and unwavering commitment to customer service. However, his influence extends far beyond the restaurant. He has consistently supported local events, charities, and initiatives, leaving an indelible mark on the community of Zionsville.
“Scott embodies everything this award stands for,” Hanlon says. “He’s not just a business owner—he’s a community builder. He has consistently stepped up to support local organizations and give back in ways that have made a tangible difference in our town.”
Barnes has remained a steadfast advocate for his neighbors. His generosity and willingness to lend a helping hand have made him a beloved figure among residents and fellow business owners alike.
The Friendly Tavern is more than just a place to grab a burger and a beer—it’s a local institution. Since taking ownership, Barnes has upheld its reputation as a gathering place where stories are shared, friendships are forged, and community ties are strengthened, making everyone feel like they belong.
“Scott has carried on the legacy of The Friendly Tavern while making it his own,” Hanlon says. “He understands the importance of keeping traditions alive
while also evolving to meet the town’s needs.”
Under his leadership, The Friendly Tavern has thrived and served as a hub for countless community celebrations and milestones. It’s the kind of place where locals know they can find a friendly face, a good meal, and a welcoming environment—a direct reflection of Barnes’ own character.
Receiving the Town Crier Award is a fitting tribute to Barnes’ years of dedication. The honor places him among an esteemed group of past recipients who have shaped Zionsville through their service and leadership.
For Barnes, however, the true reward lies in the relationships he’s built and the community he continues to serve. His humility about receiving such an honor is evident. Barnes says he is just doing what he always does—singing the praises of the community he holds so dear to residents and visitors alike.
As Zionsville celebrates this well-deserved recognition, one thing is clear: Barnes and The Friendly Tavern will remain at the heart of the community for years to come. For more information, visit friendlytavernzionsville.com.

CONTROLTECH
HEATING
| AIR | PLUMBING
Writer / Renée Larr Photographer / Robert Jones
In the HVAC world, where many companies struggle to stay afloat beyond their first few years, Control Tech has built a reputation for excellence and longevity. Founded in 1983 in Zionsville, the family-owned business has grown from a one-person operation into a thriving company with nearly 60 employees. Today, under the leadership of Clay Winters, Control Tech continues to stand apart in the industry—not just for its technical expertise but for its commitment to integrity, customer relationships, and a unique family-oriented culture.
Control Tech’s story began with Clay’s father, Alan Winters, who started the business with only a truck and just under $300 to his name. His first sale was a filtration system to a local shoe store in Boone Village, which remains open today. Without the budget for marketing, he relied on old-fashioned hard work—riding his bike around town and dropping off postcards to introduce himself to the community.
Control Tech steadily expanded from those early days, adding more trucks and employees. By the mid-1990s, the company had grown to include a sister business, Mite-E-Ducts specializing in air duct cleaning. This addition was a nod to the family’s experience in the industry—Clay’s grandfather, Ted, had previously worked in air duct cleaning in the 1970s and became Mite-E-Ducts’ first employee.
Clay grew up in and around the business, officially joining at 14. During school breaks, he worked alongside technicians and even learned to drive a company service vehicle. His deep understanding of the industry and the company’s values has allowed him to continue Control Tech’s legacy while expanding its services and workforce.
This atmosphere of trust and longevity extends to its customers as well. Many clients have remained loyal for decades,
appreciating the company’s consistent service and the familiarity of working with the same technicians year after year. Clay says customers even entrust Control Tech with key access to their homes, a testament to the strong relationships built over time.
One of Control Tech’s biggest differentiators is its approach to sales and service. Clay says unlike many larger HVAC companies that operate on a commissionbased model, Control Tech’s technicians are not pressured to upsell or push unnecessary repairs. Instead, they focus on providing honest recommendations and long-term solutions, ensuring customers receive the best service without the highpressure sales tactics.
In 2023, Control Tech added plumbing services to its offerings, reinforcing its commitment to providing reliable, customer-focused home services. The addition of plumbing services allows Control Tech to offer a comprehensive range of home maintenance solutions, all delivered with the same level of quality and customer care. Like its HVAC team, the company’s plumbers are paid fairly and are not commission-based, a rarity in the industry.
After over 40 years in business, Clay says Control Tech thrives by staying true to its values—honesty, quality work, and treating employees and customers like family. As the company grows, it remains dedicated to the principles that have made it successful: building lasting relationships, investing in its employees, and serving the community with integrity. Control Tech is not just a business, but a part of the Zionsville community, and it is committed to giving back and supporting its neighbors.
For customers in the Zionsville area, Control Tech isn’t just another HVAC company—it’s a trusted name that has been part of the community for generations. For more information, visit controltech.biz.

The Boys and Girls Club of Boone County (BGC Boone), an established institution serving youth since 1860, has adapted and evolved over its 72-year tenure to offer innovative programs and a welcoming environment that attract local youth.
Eric Richards, who assumed the role of CEO at BGC Boone two years ago, has prioritized strategies to cater to the expanding youth population in Boone County.
In the recent past, their focus shifted towards assessing the needs of their properties in Zionsville, Lebanon, and Whitestown, with their presence in the Lebanon building dating back to the 1960s.
“The initial phase of this process entailed upgrading our infrastructure. We undertook a comprehensive overhaul of the heating/cooling systems at our Zionsville and Whitestown locations. Similarly, in Lebanon, we invested in a new roof, gutters, and repainting to ensure the longevity of our buildings,” noted Richards.
Subsequently, attention turned to enhancing facilities to accommodate their growing program, resulting in the replacement of backboards, rims, and gym floors at the four basketball courts.
With these foundational improvements in place, the organization embarked on the strategic planning phase.
“We are nearing the completion of our strategic plan, after which we will transition into implementation and accountability. Our aim is to revamp programs and services to resonate with middle and high school students, providing a safe and engaging environment that assures parents of their child’s well-being,” Richards elaborated.
To modernize and diversify their offerings, BGC Boone secured a grant from the United Way of Central Indiana, with the rollout commencing in Whitestown and expanding to Zionsville and Lebanon progressively throughout the year.
“We envision introducing an eSports program tailored
for individuals aged 13 to 18, fostering an opportunity for them to come together in a cafe-like setting equipped with the technology they prefer for connectivity and learning experiences,” shared Richards.
Beyond their regular events like the annual DUNK! function in spring, the holiday-themed Gravy Chase, and four middle school dances annually, attracting nearly 2,500 students, BGC Boone actively encourages community involvement through volunteering and donations.
