North Putnam depicts a year in the life of a rural Indiana school district and the community it serves. Crafted with empathy, the film aims to spark action-oriented conversations about the interdependence between public schools and community development.

“North Putnam is a must-see for Hoosiers,” says Hoodox Executive Director Rocky Walls. “What I loved the most about it is how I could clearly see and appreciate the humanity of each person represented.”

RIVERSIDE REIMAGINED

A NEW ERA ALONG THE WHITE RIVER

Writer and Photographer / Daniel Woody
Riverside Adventure Park 3502 N White River Pkwy Dr W, Indianapolis

Once home to manicured fairways and golf carts, the northern edge of Riverside Regional Park has undergone a striking transformation. Now open to the public, Riverside Adventure Park invites visitors into a space that blends ecological restoration, inclusive recreation and the spirit of Indianapolis’ historic west side. As Phase 1 of a multi-phase vision, this new park is more than just a fresh set of trails and playgrounds — it is a major milestone in the reimagining of the White River corridor.

A CENTURY OF RECREATION, REIMAGINED

Riverside Park dates back to the early 1900s, when it was one of the largest municipal parks in the country. Originally conceived as a unified greenspace under Mayor Thomas Taggart, it evolved into a series of distinct venues over time, including golf courses, cycling tracks and family centers. In recent decades, the golf courses, particularly Riverside and South Grove, saw reduced use and increasing maintenance challenges. This opened the door for something bold and community-driven.

The shift began in earnest in 2017 with the development of the Riverside Regional Park Master Plan. Through months of public meetings, workshops and surveys, residents overwhelmingly supported converting golf course acreage into natural parkland. According to the plan, the goal was to create ecologically sensitive, revenue-sustaining spaces that reconnected the neighborhood with the White River.

PHASE 1: WHAT’S HERE NOW

The newly opened Adventure Park spans the former Riverside Golf Course and includes a nature-inspired playground, multiple picnic shelters, paved trails and a fitness loop with outdoor exercise equipment. These amenities are designed with accessibility in mind, including ramps and smooth surfaces for users with mobility challenges.

What makes this park truly unique is its integration of natural elements. Mature trees were preserved, invasive species were removed and native plants were reintroduced. Wetlands and prairie zones now support pollinators and wildlife, and a scenic overlook offers expansive

views of the river and skyline. A mural on the new restroom facility adds a splash of public art, and more creative installations are expected as the next phases roll out.

Just across from the Adventure Park’s southern parking lot, near the 30th Street bridge, sits the headquarters of The Parks Alliance of Indianapolis, a key partner in the park’s ongoing revitalization. Sharing this space is Frank’s Paddlesports Livery, a local outfitter offering paddling experiences on the White River. With such easy access from the park, visitors can transition from land to water in minutes and experience the river’s beauty from an entirely new perspective.

A PARK FOR THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE

The Riverside planning process involved two steering committees, one technical and one community based. Together, they evaluated concepts and ensured neighborhood voices shaped every step. More than 1,300 families were engaged directly through door-to-door outreach, and the response was clear: the community wanted more trails, nature play and cultural connection.

That feedback is now a reality. And even without a dedicated community center yet, Riverside Adventure Park is already seeing high usage. Families gather under shelters, children climb on nature-themed structures, and visitors pause at the overlook swing to take in the view. Indy Parks staff have spotted everything from bald eagles overhead to spontaneous community picnics below.

WHAT’S COMING NEXT

Phase 2 of the park’s development will introduce a full archery range, supported by grant funding and expected to break ground in late 2025 or 2026. Phase 3, still in design, includes a nature center and education pavilion that will serve as a regional hub for environmental learning.

Throughout the park, elements like stacked river stone — used throughout the Riverside community since the early 20th century — will appear in signage and design features, creating a sense of continuity between past and present.

TIED TO A LARGER VISION

Riverside Adventure Park is not just a standalone attraction. It is a key anchor in the broader White River Vision Plan, a multi-county initiative to revitalize 58 miles of riverfront with trails, parks and public programming. As part of this vision, the park connects directly to the Riverside Promenade, a pedestrian corridor that enhances mobility and honors the park’s cultural legacy.

According to Indy Parks, future signage and wayfinding tools will help link Riverside with other White River-connected spaces, building a regional identity and reinforcing the river as a shared community asset. The Adventure Park stands as a model for how riverfront land can be reimagined for ecology, equity and engagement.

WHY IT MATTERS

For residents of Indianapolis — especially those living near the Riverside neighborhood — the park represents more than a facelift. It is an investment in health, education and cultural recognition. It is a platform for environmental stewardship. And perhaps most importantly, it is a gathering space where the city’s past and future meet.

As one Indy Parks staff member put it, “Most of all, we love to see the activation of these spaces. We want people to come out, enjoy them and make them their own.”

With the trails open, the eagles flying and the White River flowing just steps away, Riverside Adventure Park is already doing just that.

KWAZAR’S CANVAS

INDIANAPOLIS MURALIST BLENDS BOLD STYLE AND LOCAL LOVE TO CRAFT LASTING PUBLIC ART

rt is the lifeblood of the human experience. While its meaning varies from person to person, there’s a shared understanding that art is essential to what it means to be alive. It allows people to process complex emotions and brings meaning to struggle, joy, life and death.

Today, art takes many forms — from crafting sushi to sculpting driftwood, creative expression knows no bounds.

From its ancient roots, mural painting is among the many artistic outlets that continues to flourish today.

Michael Martin, better known as Kwazar, has built a career by following his creative instincts. A native of Indianapolis’s east side, he discovered his passion for art early in life. By the age of 7, he was already drawing regularly and gravitating toward school art classes. His talent didn’t go unnoticed; teachers took note, and by third grade, one of his pieces was featured at the Children’s Museum.

As Kwazar grew, so did his artistic influences. They weren’t limited

Michael “Kwazar” Martin - Artist

to traditional visual artists; his inspiration came from a wide range of creative minds — musicians, fashion designers and sculptors alike. Figures like Jeff Koons, Pharrell and Nigo, along with his love for lowrider magazines, helped shape and expand his artistic vision over the years.

He has explored many different mediums over his career, including illustration, tattooing and canvas work.

Today, Kwazar is a celebrated muralist, with his work featured throughout Indianapolis and in cities across the country.

He began exploring murals during the pandemic, and since then, his style has continuously evolved — shaped by each new project, fueled by fresh ideas and driven by an ongoing commitment to artistic growth.

“Over time, I’ve learned to always allow myself the freedom to pivot when needed,” Kwazar says. “Whatever I end up doing will be artrelated, because that’s just who I am. But I make sure to stay open and explore different spaces so I can grow as much as possible.”

Kwazar’s work is woven into the fabric of Indianapolis, with one notable example being his mural at The Toy Pit, the city’s largest and longestrunning toy store. His design captures the spirit of the shop, bringing its playful energy vividly to life while also displaying the scope of his talent.

“The Toy Pit mural is one of my favorites by far,” Kwazar says. “The reason I say that is that it showcases such a wide range of my work. You’ll see everything from realism to cartoon styles, flat designs to 3D looks. There’s Bart Simpson, Miles Morales, Ultimate Warrior — just a mix of different styles all on one wall. It’s like a snapshot of everything I can do.”

As a proud Indianapolis native, Kwazar set out to celebrate some of the city’s most cherished institutions — its sports teams. His mural of WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark quickly went viral, shining a national spotlight on both his work and the city he calls home.

“I actually dropped the artwork before draft day, and it caused a whole stir online,” Kwazar says. “People were asking, ‘Is she really coming to Indiana?’ and wondering why I would post it before anything was official. It sparked a lot of controversy and conversation. Then the Indiana Fever posted it with the caption ‘We’ve been ready,’ almost like a response to all the buzz. That moment was wild.

“Before that, I had already done a piece on Haliburton. I created it for All-Star Weekend and only had about three days to pull it off. I just threw it up there, and funny enough, it got even more attention than another project I did.

“After that, we had the Fever and Pacers represented, and I thought, We just need a Colts player now. Then Anthony Richardson came along, and that completed what I call the ‘Big Three.’ So now there’s a piece for each major Indianapolis team, and that was the whole idea: creating a sports wall that represents everybody.”

Most recently, Kwazar completed a large-scale, fantasy-inspired mural for Elfen Moon, a Fountain Square-based company. Drawing heavily from fantasy themes, the piece showcases his ability to blend imagination with bold visual storytelling.

As his artistic journey evolves, Kwazar is setting his sights beyond Indianapolis. He hopes to bring his work to creative hubs like Wynwood in Miami or Bushwick in Brooklyn, and dreams of one day collaborating with a brand like Nike.

Whatever the future brings, Kwazar will use his unique style and voice to convey striking imagery.

Life moves fast, and few people can point to a lasting legacy etched on city walls — but Kwazar can. His art is more than expression; it’s a vital thread in the cultural fabric of Indianapolis.

FAIR TIMES

YOUR SNEAK PEEK INTO THE 2025 INDIANA STATE FAIR

If you’re a foodie, thrill seeker or entertainment junkie, you’ll likely be among the crowds headed to the 2025 Indiana State Fair. Running from Aug. 1 through Aug. 17, this year’s fair attractions will feature a variety of new themes, food selections and shows that will keep the whole family enthralled and coming back for more.

The 2025 Indiana State Fair has been dubbed the “Soundtrack of Summer,” with organizers urging patrons to turn up the volume and turn on the memories, promising a whole playlist of your favorite things this coming August.

“The Soundtrack of Summer theme will bring a vibrant array of music and sound-related attractions. Visitors can look forward to the Vinyl Revival exhibit, which celebrates the connection between music and visual art, and various live performances that capture the essence of summer. From the roar of the midway rides to the melodies of live bands, the fair will be a symphony of summer sounds,” said LeRoy Lewis III, director of community and media engagement for the Indiana State Fair.

One of the most important items on everyone’s need-to-know list is the food. Every year, patrons show up to discover which delectable concoctions will be featured. To help whet those appetites, the public is invited to participate in the Taste of the Fair contest, a competition where vendors compete to create what Lewis calls the most “unique, mouthwatering and buzzworthy bites.” This interactive tradition immerses the public in the grand tradition of Indiana’s best fare. And of course, the fan favorites — deep-fried corn on the cob, giant tenderloin and lemon shake-ups — will be available.

Entertainment seekers should check out featured events including the World-Famous Big Top Circus, The Art of Music Experience exhibit, Mighty Mike strongman shows, DockDogs and Wolves of the World. Many of these exhibits are free with paid admission. There will, of course, be bands on the grandstand, enticing crowds with sing-along favorites and dance-worthy beats. Fairgoers are encouraged to check out the Hoosier Lottery Free Stage for the summer concert feature. That lineup will be unveiled closer to opening day.

Families will have plenty of options to choose from, with free displays,

interactive activities and mesmerizing demonstrations for every age. For a full list of things to do with kids under 10, visit indianastatefair. com/events/kids for a full schedule of crafts, encounters, play areas and more.

Those looking to show off their skills or watch the action can catch competitions ranging from livestock to LEGO, including the Supreme Drive, Indiana Brewers’ Cup and Grand Champion Showcase.

“There’s a competition for nearly every passion — from 4-H projects, home and family arts, livestock showmanship, baking and quilting, to street dancing, photography, cheerleading, gardening and more. These competitions are the heart of the fair, where rural meets urban and excellence is celebrated daily,” Lewis said.

Patrons over 21 looking for their beverage of choice can enjoy awardwinning brews and spirits. The Indiana Brewers’ Cup competition, held prior to the fair, determines which brewers will be featured.

“The competition showcases the creativity, skill and innovation of brewers from across the country. With over 100 style categories judged by certified experts, the Brewers’ Cup is a true celebration of the art and science of brewing. Winners are recognized during the Indiana State Fair, where select brews are also featured for public tasting in the Indiana Beer, Wine & Spirits Garden,” Lewis said.

Wine and spirits lovers will have a variety of options thanks to the Indiana State Wine and Spirits Competition. Top vintners and distillers will showcase their creations in the Beer, Wine & Spirits Garden.

“From bold reds and crisp whites to small-batch bourbons and botanical gins, the competitions honor excellence in every pour. Awardwinning selections are proudly showcased during the fair, offering visitors a chance to sample the state’s finest in a festive, educational setting,” Lewis said.

Lewis also offered some advice to make your visit run smoothly. He suggests arriving early to beat traffic and crowds. Public transportation can ease parking woes, and E-Z Park locations are available around the fairgrounds. Visitors within biking distance can use monitored bike parking for $1 off admission.

To score a deal, fairgoers can take advantage of advance discounts for parking and admission, wristbands and family four-packs.

“We’ve blended timeless traditions with bold new attractions, so every visit feels like a brand-new adventure. Come hungry, bring your curiosity and leave with memories that smell like popcorn and sound like laughter. This is Indiana’s biggest celebration — and you’ve got a front-row ticket,” Lewis said.

Don’t miss this time-honored tradition. For more information, visit indianastatefair.com.

THE STARS ALIGN

THE 21ST WNBA ALL-STAR GAME COMES TO INDIANAPOLIS

The 21st WNBA All-Star Game is in Indianapolis, Indiana, for the first time. In addition to the festivities on the court, an actionpacked event schedule is taking place in downtown Indy, offering many opportunities for basketball fans to celebrate. WNBA All-Star Weekend takes place the weekend of July 17–18, but that’s not the only massive event going on that weekend.

The Indiana Black Expo is also hosting its popular annual event, Summer Celebration, that same weekend. With approximately 70,000 fans expected for the WNBA All-Star weekend and around 88,000 guests anticipated for the 10-day IBE Summer Celebration, the host committee is excited to collaborate on blending these celebrations for a uniquely memorable experience.

When Mel Raines, CEO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, found out about the weekend of the All-Star Game, she immediately knew she had to get the Indiana Black Expo involved early on and reached out to Alice Watson, president and CEO of the Indiana Black Expo.

“Last summer, when the [WNBA] league reached out to us and said, ‘Would you be interested in hosting the WNBA All-Star Game?’ the first call I made was to Alice. We wanted to be sure that this was something that the organization thought would be complimentary to what they were doing and that we could coexist downtown together.”

The partnership feels like a natural one to Alice Watson, who immediately saw opportunities to collaborate again with Pacers Sports & Entertainment. “This is the most exciting time not only for Indiana Black Expo, PS&E, but for the city of Indianapolis, that we’re able to host the WNBA All-Star together.”

Coordinating multiple events and community improvement projects during All-Star Weekend is a massive undertaking. Still, the WNBA All-Star 2025 Host Committee is confident that this partnership will have a positive impact on the Indianapolis community. “I don’t think that there’s many cities that can pull this sort of thing off as well as we can. We’re certainly going to raise the bar for WNBA All-Star Weekend. I think we’re gonna make sure everybody in our community that wants to be a part of this can touch this in some way,” Raines says.

The legacy projects include renovations and upgrades to the Al E. Polin Basketball Court, Fletcher Place Community Center and MCCOY (Marion County Commission on Youth), as well as supporting the Marvella Foundation championship basketball court build.

The committee hopes to transform downtown to match the magnitude of this event. Similar to their efforts with the NBA AllStar Weekend, fans should expect to see downtown decked out and ready to celebrate. Additionally, WNBA legend Tamika Catchings

is the subject of an upcoming mural on the Alexandra building, also known as Lockerbie Court.

A house is always more than just a house. It’s where people raise their kids, where they eat, where they gather to socialize with friends and neighbors, and where they live so much of life. Peace of mind for the state of a home is always desired, but so often the required repairs are unable to be made, and that little extra piece of peace gets lost.

Chelsea and Peter Kopelman were able to get some of that peace with Hometown Window. From the purchase of their home in Carmel seven years ago, the Kopelmans knew the 28 original wood windows would eventually have to be replaced. This was easier said than done. In addition to affordability, the Kopelmans took into account that the back of their house faces a golf course and is very visible. They wanted black, no-seam windows inside and out, which made the search even more difficult. For two to three years, they vetted companies that would be able to provide everything they needed.

A neighbor’s referral to Hometown Window was the game changer. The Kopelmans got the look and the quote they were looking for. From the beginning, Chelsea Kopelman says, the Hometown team was doing their jobs well.

“We live a busy schedule with three kids. I run my own business. My husband works

full-time. So we don’t have a ton of time to sit down with window salespeople for two hours to do the whole heat lamp test, and all the things,” Kopelman says. “We communicated that with the Hometown crew before they came over for the estimate, and they were really efficient with our time and respectful of our time, which was a nice surprise.”

“THEY WERE REALLY EFFICIENT WITH OUR TIME AND RESPECTFUL OF OUR TIME, WHICH WAS A NICE SURPRISE.”
—PETER KOPELMAN

Kopelman was impressed by the respectful conduct and interaction with the Hometown crew, especially when the Kopelmans’ recently refinished deck was scratched by a ladder.

“We brought [the damage] up to them, and they completely fixed the issue, no charge to us. A lot of contractors would just say, you know what, you gotta find somebody else to fix that, that’s not in our scope,” Kopelman

says. “[But Hometown] just completely took care of it, which was fantastic.”

The quality of service throughout the entire project has encouraged Kopelman and her husband to pick Hometown for their future project of replacing their front windows.

“I’m getting so many compliments anytime anybody sees them. We’ve just been getting a lot of compliments, people saying that it looks like a brand-new house.”

In addition to replacing and selling windows, Hometown also replaces and sells doors. Though Hometown offers the national brand Andersen Windows & Doors, the team is made up of entirely Indianapolis-area employees. Any project is customizable. They have a certified white-glove installation team, whose years of experience guarantee a good installation process and end result.

For more information on Hometown Windows, visit hometownwindowteam.com or give them a call at (317) 659-6293 for a free quote today.
