JAMIE BOER HOMES
Jamie Boer Homes and the “Heroes Give Back Program”

A LETTER FROMJamie Boer

As I sit down to share the story behind our Homefront Heroes Magazine, I’m reminded of the passion and purpose that led me on this journey.

I’ve always believed in the power of positivity and wanted to create something that would highlight the people who make a difference in our community every day.

You see, my work isn’t just about selling homes; it’s about building connections and fostering a sense of belonging. In my years of serving this community, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing countless acts of kindness, selflessness and dedication.

From educators and healthcare professionals to law enforcement officers and volunteers, these individuals embody the spirit of service and make our community a better place to live.

That’s where the idea for our magazine was born. I wanted to create a platform where these remarkable individuals could be celebrated and honored for their tireless efforts and commitment.

One of the driving forces behind this initiative is my belief in the power of recognition. I’ve seen firsthand how a simple “thank you” or a moment of appreciation can brighten someone’s day and inspire them to continue making a difference.

Our heroes magazine is my way of saying “thank you” to those who make our

community special. Take Jagga Rent, for example–one of the heroes you will learn about in the coming pages–his dedication to nurturing the growth and well-being of our children is nothing short of remarkable. Through his mentorship program and various initiatives within the school district, he’s shaping the future generation and leaving a lasting impact on our community. Then there’s Stephanie Braden, whose work with veterans and advocacy for career opportunities within the armed forces is truly inspiring. By educating young people about the diverse paths available to them, she’s opening doors and changing lives in profound ways. And let’s not forget Jarred Koopman, the police officer who goes above and beyond to keep our streets safe. And Peter Walts, the cardiac surgeon who is saving lives and healing hearts.

These are just a few examples of the countless heroes who inspire me every day.

Their stories deserve to be told, not just for the sake of recognition, but to inspire others to take action and make a difference in their own communities.

In addition to highlighting community heroes, our magazine will provide valuable resources for residents who want to contribute to the betterment of our community. From volunteer opportunities to community initiatives, the magazine will serve as a hub for residents.

Additionally, we recognize the value of businesses giving back to the heroes they serve. That’s why our Heroes Magazine will highlight businesses that are making a difference through unique discounts and special offers to the heroes in the community.

Launching our Homefront Heroes Magazine is about recognizing that we all have the power to be heroes in our own right, whether it’s through small acts of kindness or larger acts of service.

That’s why I’m committed to continuing this tradition of celebrating our local heroes through regular editions of our magazine, and as a token of appreciation, Jamie Boer Homes is offering discounts on services to give back to the heroes in our community. It’s the least we can do to show our gratitude and dedication to making our community a better place for us all.

As I continue on this journey, my hope is that our heroes magazine will serve as a reminder of the incredible impact that individuals can have when they come together for the greater good.

HEALING HEARTS

St. Vincent Hospital Cardiac Surgeon Peter Walts, A HERO in our community

Dr. Peter Walts, a renowned cardiac surgeon at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital’s Heart Center, brings humanity to the field of medicine, healing hearts along the way.

From a young age, inspired by role models and mentors, he embarked on a personal calling to help people.

After completing medical school in 2004, Walts delved into the intricate world of cardiac surgery, honing his skills and expertise over two decades.

Despite the immense responsibility of holding someone’s life in his hands, the surgeon said he remains steadfast in his dedication to the profession.

“There’s an emotional side to being a surgeon,” he shared. “When patients face challenges in their health journey, I think it’s important to necessitate empathy and meaningful engagement with them. The stakes are high in this profession, and while that is always on my mind, the reward is knowing I can make a positive impact on my patients’ lives.”

For Walts, being a surgeon transcends the title of a hero; it’s about serving others and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.

“This profession is filled with humility,” he explained. “While it’s deeply rewarding to witness a patient’s successful outcome, the anguish is magnified tenfold

when they don’t fare well. As a surgeon, I had to learn how to carry those experiences with me.”

He sees medicine as a constant learning journey, where each clinical scenario presents an opportunity to apply newfound knowledge and skills.

“What’s great about medicine is that it’s constant learning-even circling back to things you’ve learned before,” he said. “It’s a quest for knowledge and that’s the part that excites me.”

Despite the challenges, the most fulfilling aspect of his job is the ability to make a tangible difference in the lives of his patients.

“Utilizing my skills to help someone is the most gratifying aspect of being a surgeon,” Walts said. “Witnessing the positive transformation in their well-being, knowing that I played a role in enhancing their quality of life, is truly fulfilling.”

His approach to patient care goes beyond the operating room. He understands the importance of building trust and comfort with his patients, recognizing the intense nature of their relationship. Whether performing complex surgeries or performing a heart transplant, Walts said ensuring that his patients feel valued and supported every step of the way is one of the most important parts of his job.

“When I’m going to be operating on someone, I really become a part of the person’s life-I want them to feel comfortable in one of the most vulnerable moments of their life,” he said.

As a healer of hearts, Dr. Peter Walts is not only a skilled surgeon, he also has a genuine commitment to the patients he serves, just like a hero.

Utilizing my skills to help someone is the most gratifying aspect of being a surgeon. Witnessing the positive transformation in their well-being, knowing that I played a role in enhancing their quality of life, is truly fulfilling.

STEPHANIE BRADEN

First Sergeant UNITED STATES ARMY

12 | HOMEFRONT HEROES

AN AMERICAN HERO

First Sergeant for the United States Army

Stephanie Braden, A HERO in our community

In every community, there are heroes whose dedication and selflessness shape the lives of those around them.

Among these remarkable individuals stands First Sergeant in the 643rd HHC in Columbus, OH. Stephanie Braden, an example of service and leadership both within the military and the community she lives in.

Braden’s journey to becoming a hero is one marked by years of commitment and sacrifice.

A veteran of 21-years in the army reserves, Braden’s rise to the esteemed position is evidence of her desire to give back.

“Being entrusted with the care of soldiers is a great honor,” she shared. “The guidance I provide holds significant weight for them, and I take the responsibility seriously. It’s crucial in shaping the culture of our future soldiers, nurturing and motivating them to persevere.”

The mom of five oversees a unit of 147 soldiers, shouldering the weighty responsibility of their well-being and development.

But her role transcends military duties; it encompasses a profound commitment to the health and welfare of each soldier under her command.

“In my role as a first sergeant, it’s our duty to ensure the soldiers’ morale and well-being, encompassing everything from their mental health to their family’s welfare,” Braden explained. “We not only prepare them for combat readiness but also strive to cultivate resilience across all facets of their lives.”

From ensuring their medical readiness to supporting their mental well-being, Braden approaches her responsibilities with compassion and diligence.

“It’s truly gratifying to witness the growth of someone you’ve mentored since their youth, and to encounter them again eight years later, observing their progress,” she said. “It’s immensely rewarding to realize that you’ve played a role, no matter how small, in guiding them along their career path to where they stand today.”

Indeed, Braden’s roles as a military leader and then becoming a Registered Nurse at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis, created a force for good in her community and her home.

“Since both of my occupations involve serving others, my children witness firsthand the importance of giving back,” she explained. “This instills in them a desire to contribute as well. When you work in both the military and the medical field, you become aware of the multitude of lives you impact—you understand the influence you have over people during

some of their most vulnerable moments.”

Braden’s son, currently a Junior at Fishers High School, is following his mother’s path and will be attending West Point Military Academy to serve his country as well.

But Braden’s impact extends far beyond the confines of her military unit and workplace. She is an inspiration to all, embodying the values of service, sacrifice and selflessness. Whether she’s leading her soldiers or providing compassionate care to patients in the hospital, Sgt. Stephanie Braden exemplifies the essence of a true community hero.

To be surrounded by men and women that are willing to protect our country and our constitution and serve, makes being part of the military a tremendous honor

HONORING OUR VETERANS A Heartfelt Appreciation

In every nation's history, veterans have played a crucial role in safeguarding the freedoms and liberties we hold dear. These brave men and women have willingly placed their lives on the line, demonstrating unwavering commitment and sacrifice in the face of adversity. To express our gratitude, we must recognize the immeasurable contributions of veterans, not just on Veterans Day, but every day.

THE LEGACY OF SACRIFICE

Veterans both young and old share a common bond - their willingness to sacrifice

for the greater good. They leave behind their families, friends and comforts to defend our nation's ideals. This act of selflessness, regardless of personal consequences, is a testament to their devotion. The sacrifices made are not limited to the battlefield. They extend into the lives of other veterans and their families, often affecting them for years to come.

PRESERVING FREEDOM

The freedoms and liberties we enjoy today are thanks, in large part, to the sacrifices of veterans. They have been at the forefront of conflicts, ensuring that the principles upon which our nations were founded are

upheld. The freedoms of speech, religion and assembly, among others, are defended by these valiant individuals. Their service allows us to live in a world where democracy and human rights are cherished.

SUPPORT FOR VETERANS

While we express our gratitude, it is imperative that we go beyond words and provide tangible support for our veterans. We must ensure that they have access to quality health care, educational opportunities and employment options. Veterans often face unique challenges upon returning to civilian life, and it is our duty to help them transition smoothly.

AREA

Support networks and organizations dedicated to veterans' well-being are invaluable in this regard.

The Healing Power of Appreciation Expressing gratitude to veterans holds a special significance. It not only acknowledges their sacrifices, but also aids in their emotional and psychological healing. Many veterans carry the scars of war, both seen and unseen, and knowing that their service is appreciated can provide a profound sense of validation. Acts of appreciation, whether through a simple thankyou or involvement in community initiatives, can make a world of difference.

A DUTY OF EVERY CITIZEN

Honoring veterans is not just the responsibility of governments or organizations. It is the duty of every citizen. We must recognize that these heroes are our neighbors, our friends and our family members. Their stories are a part of our

collective history, and their sacrifices are woven into the fabric of our society. Let us commit ourselves to showing our appreciation through our actions, by supporting veterans and their families in every way possible.

Our veterans have selflessly dedicated their lives to protecting the freedoms we cherish. Their courage, resilience and sacrifices, as well as their families’ sacrifices, must be acknowledged and celebrated with unwavering gratitude. Beyond expressing our thanks in words, we must work together as a community to ensure that veterans receive the support and recognition they so rightfully deserve. In honoring veterans, we preserve their legacy and the values for which they fought - a gift to our future generations that should never be taken for granted. So, let us stand together, united in our appreciation for the brave men and women who have served, and continue to serve, our nations.

EMPOWERING TOMORROW’S LEADERS

Principal at Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate Junior High School Jagga Rent, A HERO in our community

At the center of Fishers, stands Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate Junior High School, where Jagga Rent is not just a principal, but an inspiration for the entire community and its youth.

For Rent, being a principal is more than just a job—it’s a calling.

“Being a principal isn’t something I feel like I’ve chosen, it chose me,” he said. “I love what I do and I feel blessed to be able to lead a school everyday and build good future citizens.”

With 14 years of experience as an administrator, he brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep understanding of the challenges facing both students and educators. But what truly sets this principal apart is his profound commitment to building meaningful relationships with his students, staff and parents.

“I feel like it’s critical as a principal to keep in touch with the kids,” Rent explained. “As much as my participation is good for the kids, it’s also good for me. It keeps me connected to the most meaningful part of my role, the students.”

As a mentor, Rent goes above and beyond to connect with his students. Whether he’s sponsoring clubs, popping into classrooms, or playing the drums during a performance with the school’s band, he

ensures that no student feels unseen or unheard.

But Rent’s impact extends far beyond the walls of the school. He actively engages with parents, forging partnerships that prioritize the well-being and success of every child.

“I wholeheartedly believe that education is a collaborative effort, requiring unity between home and school,” he said. “It takes a village mentality to continue to build the students up. The team effort between the parents, administrators and myself can make a significant impact on a child’s path in life.”

His collaboration with organizations like the nonprofit called Youth Mentoring Initiative (YMI). which matches students with mentors, is another example of Rent’s dedication to the community.

“Serving as a board member for this organization has been so rewarding,” Rent shared. “I believe in the mission of YMI and am proud to be a small part of it. Anytime I can recruit mentors, I do it.”

Despite his humility, Rent’s impact resonates deeply with those who know him. His former student, now graduated, asked him to walk her down the aisle— this shows the lasting impression he leaves on those he guides.

For Rent, the true measure of success

lies in seeing his students thrive as compassionate, responsible citizens.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Rent said. “I get chill bumps just talking about it. Seeing students succeeding as adults is so rewarding.”

As he navigates the demands of his role, Rent remains grounded by his family— his wife Finae and their three children, Jaelynne, Journie, and Jagga. This year is the first year one of Rent’s children have attended his school.

“I’ve always been everyone else’s principal,” he said. “Having my daughter with me this year has been the best year of my entire career. It’s been very special.”

In Jagga Rent, the community of Fishers has found not just a principal, but a hero whose dedication, empathy and passion for education are shaping the future leaders of tomorrow.

His story reminds us that true heroism lies in the everyday acts of kindness and compassion that uplift and inspire us all.

“I work with some really good people,” he said. “I had a lot of people that contributed to who I am and mentored me along the way. I don’t consider myself a hero. I look to others as my heroes.”

JARRED KOOPMAN

K-9 Officer

FISHERS POLICE DEPARTMENT

RICO

20 | HOMEFRONT HEROES

BADGE OF HONOR

Fishers K-9 Officer Jarred Koopman, A HERO in our community

Jarred Koopman, a dedicated K-9 officer with the Fishers Police Department, has become a humble hero in the community, inspiring people through his acts of kindness and his love for two special dogs.

His bravery in protecting the community, coupled with his commitment to its residents, has touched many hearts in Fishers.

The K-9 officer’s journey as a community hero began when he encountered a man walking to work, radiating positivity despite facing challenges.

Moved by the man’s happiness, Koopman struck up a conversation to learn more.

“I saw him dancing and singing on his way to work every day, so I stopped to ask him what brought him such joy,” Koopman recalled. “He shared that he worked with children with autism and cherished life.”

Learning about the man’s struggles following a car accident that left him without transportation, Koopman sprang into action without hesitation.

“I was touched by his positivity and outlook on life, and I wanted to do something to help him,” Koopman said.

Inspired by the man’s story, the officer launched a viral campaign on his social media platform, raising nearly $2,500 within 24 hours to help purchase a car for the man.

“This guy was making a difference,” Koopman said. “Not only was he walking several miles to work every day, but he was choosing to do it with a positive attitude and showing others that they can be happy too.”

But Officer Koopman’s heroism doesn’t end there. His genuine care for the wellbeing of the residents is seen through his interactions with the people living there. From engaging with the youth by playing ball in the streets to spreading positivity through visits to local schools with his K-9 partner, Koopman has inspired others to make a difference in their own lives and those around them.

“I think it’s important as a police officer to treat people how we want to be treated,” Koopman said. “We owe it to our community to help them and support them. At the end of the day, we all are human beings that are all trying to go through life, and we all want the same thing.”

However, the journey to heroism hasn’t been without challenges. Losing his first K-9 partner Harlej in the line of duty a few years ago, was a devastating blow to Koopman.

As Koopman and his K-9 closed in on a suspected drunk driver that day, Harlej signaled a promising scent trail. Koopman released Harlej to pursue, but the suspect vanished into the woods. Shortly afterward, a single gunshot

echoed through the silence.

“I think me and Harlej were put into that situation for a reason,” Koopman said. “Even though Harlej didn’t make it that day, he saved a lot of lives, and a lot of guys were able to go home that night to their families. If anything, Harlej is the hero.”

After the tragic loss of Harlej, the community of Fishers pulled together to help Koopman buy his new partner, a Belgian Malinois named Rico.

“Because me and Harlej had done so many things for the community, people knew him,” Koopman said. “When that happened, the support of the police department and the support of the community was awesome.”

As Koopman continues his journey of service, whether it’s through protecting the streets as a K-9 officer or lending a helping hand to those in need, his commitment to making a positive difference has earned him the title of a hero.

“I don’t try to be a hero, I try to do the best that I can and help people in any way that I can,” Koopman said. “I think if everyone does the right thing, then everything else will take care of itself.”
