Message from the Principal

W

hile spring signifies new life and fresh beginnings, it also signifies the end of another school year. As you read this, our senior class will have begun a new journey, having finished their tenure as students at Fr. Tolton Catholic High School. On this new journey they will find their Tolton Catholic family still ready to support and care GWENN ROCHE for them because they will always be TrailPrincipal blazers, no matter where their new journey takes them.

At the same time, we welcome new Trailblazers into the family. I use the word “family” because that’s what families do, they continue to grow and continue to provide for those who spread their wings beyond the family home. One of the best things about Catholic education is that it provides this extended family for our students.

While their parents are their first teachers, we have worked to provide the best possible Catholic education to our students, guiding their growth and development in spirit, heart, mind and body.

Our students have gained knowledge in a variety of areas that will give foundation to what they will next study. We are looking forward to a renewed partnership with the Columbia Area Career Center next year to offer a broader range of classes, as well as offering a Spanish IV class for dual credit. Students have strengthened their bodies and enhanced their skills in areas of athletic competition. We have shared in prayer and worship, celebration and praise, gratitude and grief. Together our students have provided thousands of hours of service to their school, churches, and the greater community.

Their time at Tolton Catholic has been very busy! Just thinking about all our students are involved in, the hours of practice, study, prayer and service wear me out! They are an amazing group of young people who will go from here to do even more great things in the world. They are passionate, energetic, gifted and caring. They enjoy life and all it offers. Standing in support of them are many dedicated faculty and staff, clergy, parents, and community members. We all share in our pride of these young people and their accomplishments.

My first year at Tolton Catholic has been a year of growth for me as well. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with our faculty, staff, students, parents, School Board, Advisory Council, Booster Club, various committees, the Office of Schools and Bishop McKnight. Nothing happens in isolation in a school! It truly takes a village and we have a wonderful village. I look forward to our continued unified effort to blazing trails on behalf of our students.

Class of 2019 Earns Nearly $6 million in College Scholarships

S

ixty-seven young men and women were awarded diplomas at Tolton’s May 17th Commencement Ceremony. This class excelled academically, collectively receiving 130 scholarship offers (106 academic, 9 athletic) totaling more than $5.8 million. These 2019 grads were accepted into 43 colleges in 13 different states. Some will also serve their country in the military and in AmeriCorps. They will use $2.2 million in scholarships to attend school in 11 different states. Sixty-eight percent of the 2019 class earned Latin Honors with GPAs of 3.75 or higher. Tolton now boasts an alumni association 322 members strong. Joseph Lutz and Kate Bedsworth were selected by faculty and students to be the student speakers for the ceremony.

FR. MIKE’S MUSINGS The great Class of 2019 had one hour left in their high school careers. I was on the office intercom giving them a final blessing since I had to leave early for a funeral. I left the office after the blessing and saw two seniors standing in the hall. One had tears in his eyes. The other gave him a hug and then she said: “this is so sad!”

I remember exactly how that felt on my last day of school at my beloved alma mater, St. Pius X in Festus. I was sad to leave a place that felt to me like family. It warms my heart to hear some seniors say the same thing about my beloved Tolton Catholic.

During this past week, several graduating seniors have stopped by my office to say goodbye and tell me they would be back to visit and to attend games in the Fall. I know they mean it because visiting alumni are a regular occurrence at Tolton. A few days ago, a member of last year’s class was checking in at the office. He excitedly told me he had to do a service project for a college class and was “overjoyed when they approved my request to do it at Tolton.”

A parent who often attends Sunday night Mass at Newman Center told me they always see a large group of Tolton alums attending Mass together. I congratulated one of the alums mentioned in that conversation and he told me: “We go every Sunday together. Being Tolton grads we have a type of community amongst ourselves.

It’s a cool feeling!”

Another recent graduate told me “every time I see a Tolton person walking around Mizzou campus, we always greet each other, even if it’s someone I didn’t really know that well.”

One of this year’s graduates just stopped by to greet me as I’m writing this and said “I’m going to miss this place so much. I think my classmates and I will always have a special bond.” I hope you will, dear Blazers.

A WELCOME ADDITION

While I will miss each and every one of our graduating seniors, I am excited about the addition of Father Paul Clark to the Tolton Catholic staff! Fr. Paul was ordained a couple of years ago. He is a dynamic young priest and will bring much energy and holiness to Tolton (I’m not just saying that because I baptized him as a baby). Members of his family supplied the music at my ordination Mass and first Mass. He is a young man of many talents and the Tolton community is so blessed to have him! He served his deacon internship at Our Lady of Lourdes while I was still there and we had a lot of fun learning together.

Spotlight: Ashley Kippes Class of 2020 Why was it important for you to attend a Catholic high school, even though you live 40+ minutes away?

It was important for me to go to a Catholic high school because of the religious aspects that Tolton offers such as retreat team, house Mass, and adoration. In 8th grade I knew Tolton was the right school for me, but it wasn’t realistic in my situation, because I live in Moberly. God had a different plan for me though, and I received a full scholarship to Tolton from a friend of the school. I am so thankful for the opportunity to go to a Catholic high school.

You have been very involved in Pro-Life Club - why are you so passionate about that cause?

My grandma has been involved with the pro-life movement for many years and has served as secretary for the Missouri Right to Life. She taught me about the sanctity of every human life from conception to natural death. Before I came to Tolton I had been to the March for Life and that is where I learned about this important movement. I knew that I needed to make a change and stand up for what is right. This cause has taught me the importance of how I can make a change for the better. The Pro-Life movement has taught me how to be a leader and follow in my grandma’s footsteps.

This past year Tolton’s pro-life club has had several fundraisers to donate money and clothes to Pregnancy help centers such as the My Life Clinic and the St. Raymond’s Society. I believe our club has embodied the four pillars of Tolton — spirit, heart, mind, and body. It gives students the chance to address a real problem in the world today and make a difference. It is the perfect act of selflessness — we are standing up for a person we don’t know. Our mission is to protect the rights of the unborn and serve to women that need support, as well as serve the disabled and poor. I found my passion for life at Tolton and I will continue to serve to this cause in my career.

What other activities do you enjoy being involved in?

I am a member of the National Honor Society, and I really enjoy running track and cross country. It is very special to me to pray before practice and races.

What do you find most enjoyable about being part of the Tolton Catholic community?

I really enjoy the religious aspect of Tolton. Many schools don’t have the privilege of learning about God. It is special that you have the opportunity to attend Mass with your friends and teachers. I also like how the Tolton community is so supportive. When life gets hard, teachers are always there for their students. I couldn’t imagine going to any other school.

PRO-LIFE CLUB

I

n addition to the annual pilgrimage to the March for Life in Washington, D.C., Tolton Catholic’s Pro-Life Club put on several events at school this year. One of the most popular was the “Gender Reveal Competition” in which each House had to come up with a fun way to reveal a baby’s gender. The club also organized bake sale fundraisers, decorated the entrance with Pro-Life quotes, and volunteered at My Life Clinic.

FR. TOLTON’S CAUSE FOR SAINTHOOD MOVES FORWARD

A mural of Fr. Tolton is currently being worked on in the Tolton Catholic art room. The mural was started by art teacher Lonnie Tapia, and he has allowed select students to contribute.

T

he namesake of Fr. Tolton Catholic High School, Fr. Augustus Tolton, is now one step closer to becoming St. Augustus Tolton.

On February 5, Fr. Tolton’s cause for sainthood moved forward once the Congregation for the Causes of Saints unanimously agreed that he was a deserving candidate based on his extraordinary life.

“This is wonderful news for Fr. Tolton’s cause,” said Most Reverend Joseph N. Perry, auxiliary bishop of Chicago and diocesan postulator for the Tolton cause.

“The progress of Tolton’s cause continues to validate his life of holiness, perseverance and stamina against great odds.”

The cause will next be presented to the Ordinary Meeting of Cardinals and Archbishops, where a final vote will be taken before presenting the Decree of Heroic Virtues to the Pope for his approval. With that decree, Fr. Tolton would receive the title “Venerable”, which indicates he lived the theological virtues of faith,

hope, and charity and the cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance at a heroic level.

Fr. Tolton’s cause for canonization began back in 2010. In 2011, he received the designation “Servant of God,” a title given to a candidate by the Vatican once a cause has begun. In March 2015, the Acts of the Diocesan Inquiry into the life and virtues of Tolton were officially opened at the Congregation for Causes of Saints in Rome which approved the juridical validity of the Diocesan Inquiry a month layer.

Locally, the Fr. Tolton Legacy Society, established at the St. Thomas More Newman Center, continues to work to promote Fr. Tolton’s works. An annual Mass and luncheon is held at the Newman Center in his honor. Here at the school, an all school Mass was held in honor of Fr. Tolton’s Ordination anniversary on April 24. The school continues to pray the prayer for his canonization, which you can find to the right.

O God, we give you thanks for your servant and priest, Father Augustus Tolton, who labored among us in times of contradiction, times that were both beautiful and paradoxical.

His ministry helped lay the foundation for a truly Catholic gathering in faith in our time. We stand in the shadow of his ministry. May his life continue to inspire us and imbue us with that confidence and hope that will forge a new evangelization for the Church we love.

Father in Heaven, Father Tolton’s suffering service sheds light upon our sorrows; we see them through the prism of your Son’s passion and death. If it be your Will, O God, glorify your servant, Father Tolton, by granting the favor I now request through his intercession (mention your request) so that all may know the goodness of this priest whose memory looms large in the Church he loved.

Complete what you have begun in us that we might work for the fulfillment of your kingdom. Not to us the glory, but glory to you O God, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord; Father, Son and Holy Spirit, you are our God, living and reigning forever and ever. Amen

A Prayer for the Canonization of Fr. Tolton

Q&A WITH TOLTON ALUMNI AND SEMINARIAN, CONNOR MCCARTY Q: As part of the first graduating class at Tolton, you were able to be the first to do a lot of things. Now you’re the first to enter the seminary. What does it mean to you to blaze that trail for future graduates?

A: It means a lot and it is a responsibility that I’m excited to take head on. To be the first to do anything comes with being the one to set the bar or the standard and expecting others to exceed that standard one day. As apart of the first graduating class, we all had that same attitude, excel at all we were doing — set the standards high — then watch the success of a great school to come. That’s the same mentality I have being the first to enter seminary.

I want to achieve that high level of excellence and strive towards holiness in such a way that it inspires more Trialblazers to not only do the same, but go higher and do better.

Then, God-willing, I will move to Theology and apply for official candidacy for the priesthood. If I receive candidacy and personally decide to continue with formation I will move through Theology towards my Diaconate year which would be year 3 of Theology. I will spend a year as a Deacon and then plan to be ordained a priest of Jesus Christ around the summer of 2025.

Q: In the past you have served as the alumni association president and even an assistant golf coach at Tolton. The seminary will obviously take up most of your time now, but how do you hope to remain involved with Tolton?

A: I hope to be as involved as my formation allows me with both Tolton and OLLIS. I graduated from both and have watched my brothers go through both schools, so it’s home.

Home is where your heart is and my heart is not only in these schools, but the Diocese of Jefferson City. I entered the seminary with a desire to serve and to serve the faithful of our Diocese. Wherever God takes me, I will go, I just hope it’s a little closer to home here at Tolton and OLLIS for as long as possible.

GRANDPARENTS DAY

F

or the first time in Tolton Catholic’s 8-year history, the school hosted a Grandparents Day event on September 14. The inaugural event was a rousing success, with nearly 200 grandparents in attendance.

To kick off the day, grandparents enjoyed short presentations and videos, as well as a performance by the Blazer Band.

After attending Mass, grandparents had the option of several activities including tours of the school, a chance to purchase spirit wear, or round table discussions with school leadership.

The day wrapped up with a wonderful luncheon.

Next school year’s Grandparents Day will be held on October 4, 2019. Save the date!

Spotlight: Ali Golden GRADUATION/ACT CDC ACTIVITIESUPDATE Class of 2020

You’ve been very involved in the Christian Diversity Committee since it’s founding last year. What compelled you to get involved?

I felt the need to get involved in CDC because I wanted to serve the community. From its inception, I’ve felt like Christian Diversity Committee’s mission has been very important. As Christians, especially as Catholics, we’re always taught to treat others with the respect they deserve, but it’s very important to see that through, and CDC gives us the chance to do so.

Can you tell us about some of the projects CDC has worked on that you’ve enjoyed?

The major projects that we’ve done in the last two years have been our Multicultural Awareness assembly and our Holocaust assembly, which were open to the entire school, as well as community members, but I’ve really enjoyed the work we’ve done for veterans and active service members. My sophomore year, we sent baskets overseas to troops that had connections to people in the school, and in return we were given a medal and an American flag that was flown in combat. We’ve also had clothing and book drives for the veterans at Welcome Home. It’s really rewarding to be able to give back to those that fought to protect our country.

What have you enjoyed most about being a part of the Tolton community?

I think that I’ve enjoyed the community itself the most. I’ve met some of my best friends as a result of going to school here, and I’ve also met some very important role models in the form of teachers, coaches, and even fellow classmates. I love how close the whole community is. I always feel welcomed and comfortable no matter where I go.

I know you have pushed yourself to take a very challenging schedule of classes. What motivates you to do that?

I think that I’m my biggest motivator. My dad has been very supportive of me and he always makes sure to tell me that he’ll be proud whether I get an A+, or a D+. School has always been something I’ve enjoyed, and I love being challenged academically, so taking harder classes has been a really enriching experience. I’ve definitely been able to expand my horizons thanks to the courses I’ve taken.

Have you considered your next steps for after high school?

It’s really strange to think about what comes after high school in all honestly. I’m not sure where I want to go yet, but I think I either want to go into psychology or journalism. I think the classes I’m going to take in this next year of school are really going to help me focus in on what path I want to take.

The Christian Diversity Club (CDC) was fortunate to receive a visit from Gavin Fry, 205th MP BN HHD Commander. His unit received care packages from CDC last year while deployed. He presented members of the CDC with a flag that was flown in a F-15W Strike Eagle on a combat sortie over Syria and Iraq. CDC collected supplies once again this year and delivered them to veterans at Welcome Home.

In January, the Christian Diversity Committee dedicated the new flag from Sgt. Frye to fly in front of the school.

In March, CDC hosted guest speaker Jim Lowe from the National Holocaust Museum in St. Louis. Mr. Lowe spoke about his parents’ experiences during the Holocaust and the effects that those experiences had for the rest of their lifetimes.

Volunteering at Rainbow House

O

ne of the most unique aspects of Tolton Catholic, our House program, added a new aspect this year. Each of our six houses partnered with a local charity for the school year (you can see a list of those partnerships at the bottom left).

Houses not only volunteered their time for these charities, but also held drives for supplies and collected funds.

Of course, a main focus of House is building community and there was ample opportunity for that this year. Students competed in a variety of House competitions, from arm wrestling to hallway decorating, to pumpkin carving, and dodgeball. Congratulations to the winners of this year’s House Cup, the House of Sebastian.

Nick Slusher Named National Merit Finalist Tolton Catholic senior Nick Slusher was named a National Merit Finalist! In order to advance to this level, semifinalists had to complete an application, have a consistently very high academic record, write an essay, be endorsed and recommended by a school official, and take the SAT and earn a score that confirms their PSAT performance. Congratulations Nick!

Freshman Catherine Mayhan’s History Days project took first place in the senior individual exhibit category at regionals and she will be going to nationals for National History Day in College Park, Maryland.

Sophomore Jaida Rudkin was named a 2019 Boone County Electric Cooperative Youth & Leadership Experience Delegate for her high achievements in service, academics and leadership.

Freshman Grace Konrad’s artwork was chosen as a winner of the Look Around Art Contest to end the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

Sophomore Dylan Seidt was selected to represent Tolton Catholic at the Missouri Scholars Academy on the University of Missouri campus in June.

olton Catholic senior Heather Snow had an idea to put on a Student Professional Development Day this year, and once she had the green light, she ran with it. With the help of the National Honor Society, Snow recruited more than 30 community members, faculty and staff to offer a session that would be beneficial to students.

Each student was able to rank what sessions they were most interested in attending and then they were given a schedule of four sessions to attend the afternoon of April 4. The event was exceptionally well organized by our students, who even had back up plans in place for the rain. Students rotated through a variety of sessions ranging from practical skills (banking and taxes), to outdoors (archery and fishing), to things that will need to know for college (ACT 101, DIY Dorm Room), and much more! We plan to host the event again during the 2019-2020 school year.

Spotlight: Chase Martin Class of 2020

Freshmen students in government class took part in the freshman election project, which included a live debate among the presidential candidates, as well as learning about campaigning and voting.

Chemistry students learned about the gas laws (PV = nRT) by building creative hot air balloons and testing them out.

As part of geography class, students participated in a travel agent project. Each group had to put together a display with information about a country and then try to convince other students to visit that location.

What AP classes have you taken and do you plan to take?

The AP classes that I have taken are AP Chemistry, AP US History, and AP Language and Composition. I plan to take AP European History, AP Calculus, AP Physics, and AP Literature.

What have you found most challenging and most enjoyable about the curriculum?

The most challenging thing about the Tolton curriculum is the AP classes that are offered in the school. his spring, I was proud and honored to accept the position of Athletic Director and I will do my absolute best each and every day to move Tolton in the right direction. I would like to share a bit about my journey and my philosophy for our athletic and activities department.

GARY LINK I graduated from the University Athletic Director of Missouri in 1974 with a degree in business. I had the great opportunity to play for Hall of Fame Coach Norm Stewart during my time there. Upon graduation, I went to work for my father’s construction company for 25 years, until he was called home. I then returned to University of Missouri Athletics as the Special Assistant to the Athletic Director for 17 years.

My Catholic faith is very important to me, which is why Tolton Catholic is such a good fit for me. Respect is also very important to me and I believe it must be earned one day at a time by myself, students, teachers, staff, administration, and parents.

I believe my first responsibility should always be to our students and student athletes. I will always be available to them, and will listen with an open mind about their thoughts, ideas, and concerns.

My vision for our Athletic and Activities Department is to prepare our students for life experiences after they graduate from Tolton Catholic. I am passionate, strategic, well organized, and will take ownership of this vision.

I look forward to working with each of our coaches and together we will teach our student athletes the importance of being on a team, the responsibilities that come with being on a team, and the privilege is it to wear a Tolton Catholic uniform. Our students have a responsibility to everyone that has worn that uniform before them and all the young boys and girls that will one day wear that uniform after them.

We are Tolton 24/7/365 and I will do my best to encourage our students and coaches to share my passion and be as proud as I am to be part of the Trailblazer family.

I always tell my students to “enjoy the journey,” the rest will take care of itself. I ask each and every one of you to enjoy our journey too.

4. WRESTLING Six wrestlers advanced to the State Tournament this year: Teague Travis, Montgomery Mills, Wyatt Cooley, Monroe Mills, Ben Breitweiser, and Conner Fogue. Travis won his second consecutive state title, while Montgomery Mills finished 2nd, and Cooley and Monroe Mills took 3rd. The team also won the AAA Championship.

6 & 7. BOYS BASKETBALL The Tolton boys team finished the year 18-6, losing to Blair Oaks in the District Championship. Nathan Schwartze and Deuce Tatum were All-District. The Trailblazers won both games against rival, Helias Catholic.

1. SOFTBALL For the first time in school history, softball won a District title. The team advanced to the quarterfinals of the State Tournament and finished the season 18-7. The team also won the AAA Conference and the Bulldog Invitational. Paige Bedsworth made 2nd Team All-State.

2. FOOTBALL Football finished the season 3-7 and advanced to the 2nd round of the District Playoffs with a win over Hermann. The Trailblazers won three-in-a-row late in the season. Monroe Mills, CJ Campbell and Robert Hunter made 2nd Team All-State.

3. GIRLS TENNIS The girls tennis team increased their match win total to two this year with victories over Fulton and Boonville. They lost to Hermann in the first round of Districts.

5. DANCE The Blazer Girls small but mighty team finished in 4th place at their State competition, with a 1st place finish in dance and 3rd in pom. The girls also finished 2nd in the AAA Conference and they earned the highest team GPA for a Division 1 dance team.

8. CHEER The Tolton Catholic cheer team won the 2018 State Championship Title in Division 2 Large on December 1 at Lindenwood University. This is the second state title for the cheer program (2015). Grace Brownfield, Madi McKenzie, and Claire Turnau made the All-State team.

9. GIRLS GOLF The girls golf team took home their third straight District Title and both Ali Golden and Jayden Berrey advanced to the State tournament. The girls also won the Salisbury Invitational and took 2nd in the AAA Conference.

17. TRACK The boys team finished 2nd at the District meet and Nathan Forck and the 4x800m relay team of Forck, Matthew Aholt, Dylan Block and Jarod Aholt advanced to State, finishing 3rd. The girls team advanced several athletes to sectionals, including: Mary-Rourke Boyd, Olivia Barnes and the 4x800m relay team of Boyd, Anna Gangloff, Courtney Widmer, and Ellie Mallett.

18. GIRLS SOCCER Tolton finished the season 7-13-2, losing a close game to St. Paul Lutheran in the District Semifinals. The girls took second place in the Moberly Tournament with wins over Kirksville and Moberly.

11. VOLLEYBALL Volleyball finished the year with a 8-17 record and took 2nd place in the Hallsville Tournament. The team lost to Hallsville in the District Quarterfinals.

14. BOYS GOLF After winning both Districts and Sectionals, the Trailblazers advanced to State as a team for just the second time, where they ultimately finished 3rd. Christian Rischer was the state runner-up and Joseph Fallis made All-State. The team also won the Tolton Invitational, Hannibal Invitational and took 3rd in the AAA Conference.

16. BOYS TENNIS Boys tennis finished the regular season 1-8 in matches before falling to Richland in the District Quarterfinals. The young team of 15 graduates just one senior.

he Blazer Band performed two selections at Six Flags this year and received an “Excellent” rating, the highest honor awarded. They also received an “Outstanding” rating at MSHSAA Competition. Four flutists advanced to the state competition: Abigail Mayhan, Jewel Smith, Brooke Hedrick, and Leah Lutz. The choir performed at Silver Dollar City and also received an “Excellent” rating. Jaclyn Sexauer and Hannah Huff received “Outstanding” ratings in MSHSAA Competition.

Class of 2021 Can you tell us about the things you are involved in at Tolton Catholic?

I am involved in baseball, basketball, track, and I am also a student ambassador.

How do you balance your academic priorities with being a multi-sport athlete?

Being a multi-sport athlete can be challenging at times.

In the spring, I participated in both baseball and track and field. I always had baseball practice from 3:55 to 6:30 p.m. on weekday evenings. I would attend morning track practice at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I would always have to make sure I had time after baseball practice to do my academic work and stay caught up in school.

he Tolton Scholar Bowl Team took 2nd place in the AAA Conference this year. Nick Slusher finished 2nd individually. Overall, the team won 43 games and lost 28.

What favorite memories do you have from being involved in athletics?

I’ve had lots of good memories in athletics while at Fr. Tolton. The best is by far the first round district baseball game my freshman year. We were down by one and the bases were loaded. Stephen Wilson came up to the plate and smoked a walk-off double over the left fielder’s head.

I scored the tying run and Mack Baker scored the winning run.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the Tolton community?

What I enjoy most about being part of the Tolton community is getting to know so many people. I feel as though I know almost everyone in the school and you grow close to so many people while attending Fr. Tolton.

he Mock Trial Team won the State Regional Competition held at the University of Missouri Law School and advanced to the State Competition. The team was mentored by Tony Gonzalez.

New Event Brings New Awards, Traditions

F

or several years, Tolton Catholic would host three athletic banquets, one at the end of each season, to celebrate team accomplishments and individual feats. However, based on the success of athletic awards events like the ESPYs and the Tribbys (put on by the Columbia Daily Tribune), the school decided to try something different this year. Thanks to the efforts of a fantastic volunteer committee, the inaugural “Best of the Blazers” event came together on April 14 to recognize not only athletics, but fine arts, clubs, and activities as well.

The committee created six new awards this year in the areas of the Tolton pillars of spirit, hear, mind, and body. Coaches and club sponsors were invited to nominate a student in each category. A committee then voted on the most deserving student for the award. All nomination letters were given to the nominees after the winners, featured on the right, were announced at the event. Faculty, staff, students, and even Alumni Association representative Orie Hemme (pictured above) all helped announce the awards. Awards included:

ROCKIN’ NEW BLAZER: Same as above, but this award is given to a Freshman or Sophomore.

SPIRIT MAKER: Recognizes the student who is the team motivator. The nominee isn’t necessarily the loudest kid on team, but the one who sincerely and meaningfully motivates his/her peers.

MIND OVER MATTER: Recognizes the student who has a high IQ for their sport or activity in terms of making a smart play or strategic moves. This is an unselfish participant who uses his/her smarts in competition.

aving been part of the Tolton Team for many years, I continue to be astonished by our community’s commitment to this school and our young people. I am humbled by your collective generosity and the sacrifices made on our behalf. I am astounded by your resiliency through change. I am inspired by your personal engagement and sense of urgency to move us forward.

Evidence of this commitment is the continued forward momentum of our advancement activities.

In recent months, the Bishop announced two separate $1M gifts for the benefit of Tolton Catholic! The first supported Tolton’s long-term viability in a significant way, as it was committed specifically to reduce the school’s debt.

The second gift established a scholarship and tuition assistance endowment for Tolton Catholic students. This generous gift increases accessibility, and positively impacts the school’s annual budget, allowing school leaders to re-allocate budget dollars previously used for such assistance toward other high-priority needs.

We also recorded our largest grossing annual fund appeal to date in 2018 (up 25% year over year) and endowed multiple named scholarship awards. We celebrated with each other in record numbers – while benefiting the school – at the 2018 gala and golf tournament events. We hosted over 200 grandparents at our first-ever Grandparents Day activity. We expanded our Alumni Board membership and alumni parent programming. We inducted 5 new members into our President’s Circle giving society and recognized 17 Blazer Society qualifiers... all made possible by our Trailblazer friends and families!

As we head into a new academic year, I humbly ask you to stay the course to sustain this wonderful momentum. As program support and the paying down of our original construction debt remain high priorities, I thank you in

Mary Cleek | Blazer Alumni Achievement Award Winner Mary Cleek was part of the second graduating class at Tolton Catholic in 2015, and she has continued to blaze new trails in her college career. Mary attends Missouri State University where she is working toward her degree in exercise and science movement, with a minor in American Sign Language. Her ultimate goal is to become an occupational therapist “Mary is a living saint,” says Fr. Mike Coleman, school chaplain.

“She’s just pure goodness. She lives her faith as much as any person of any age that I’ve ever known.”

Since the age of nine, Mary has volunteered with Special Olympics, a cause dear to her family’s hearts. She helped out at Sports Camp, served as a unified partner, and started a Special Olympics volleyball team in Springfield. Mary played volleyball for Tolton Catholic, during which time Fr. Mike nicknamed her “The Hammer.” She also played for two years at William Woods.

In addition, Mary has worked at Camp Barnabas assisting individuals with special needs and chronic illnesses, as well as become a lead mentor in Missouri State’s “Bear Power” program, a new educational program for students with intellectual disabilities.

Sarah Byland, one of the athletes who got to know Mary well over the years, said that Mary is like a “best friend” and is great at

coaching the Special Olympics athletes.

“Mary is just a naturally good person with a great heart,” Sarah’s mom Jeanie Byland says. “You can just look at Mary and tell that she loves doing things for other people. She has a special place in her heart for all the athletes.”

Jeanie says that at the Summer Games, Mary always makes it a point to find athletes she has worked with in the past to catch up.

“She always loves the underdog. If a person has a struggle, they can count on [Mary] to stand up for them,” Fr. Mike says.

Kim Fallis | Fr. Augustus Tolton Service Award Winner

K

im Fallis is like Tolton Catholic’s version of the Ghostbusters.

Whenever a volunteer need arises at the school, “Who you gonna call?” Kim Fallis.

“She’s a fabulous volunteer, because whenever we call she responds and she’s willing to do anything, it doesn’t seem to matter what the job is,” says Brenda Neuhaus, Administrative Assistant for Athletics and Activities. “When she comes in for lunch duty, she always has a smile on her face, she’s always here well before her scheduled time, and she’s very, very pleasant with the kids.”

“She just puts her whole heart into it,” Admissions Director Laura Sasser says. “She never wavers — if you need her, she’s there. She even kind of works her schedule around her volunteering.”

In addition to her weekly lunch shift, Kim has helped organize class baskets for the Gala, served on the committee to plan the Best of the Blazers event, serves on the Facilities Committee of the Advisory Council, and helps as a team mom for boys and girls golf.

“Tolton has so many wonderful volunteers, but I think what makes Kim stand out is how selflessly she gives of herself,” golf coach Joe Bradley says. “She’s never expecting praise, and certainly doesn’t expect awards like this, but she just wants to be helpful.”

Joe said one funny example of Kim going the extra mile was when she brought cupcakes for a golf team social. There were 18 cupcakes, each with a different hole number. The front 9 was one

flavor of cupcake, and the back 9 was another flavor.

Kim not only gives of her heart and time to Tolton, but to community causes as well. She currently serves on the Columbia Water and Light board (and was the first woman appointee). She has previously been involved in Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, Greater Missouri Leadership Challenge, Partners in Education Advisory Board, and the United Way Executive Board.

“It makes me feel good to give back to others,” Kim says. “I’m a people person. It makes my heart happy to do something that can help other people in whatever fashion that might be.”

Planned Giving Donor Spotlight: Larry and Paulette Fick

G

rowing up in Rich Fountain, MO, Larry and Paulette Fick attended Catholic grade school and were high school sweethearts at Fatima High. They will celebrate their 56th wedding anniversary this summer and have established a long and rich history within the local Catholic community. Together, they’ve raised four successful children – all of whom attended Our Lady of Lourdes grade school here in Columbia.

When asked why they support Tolton, Larry states, “We’re blessed to be in a position to help, and are so glad there will be a Catholic high school for our grandchildren, and all the local young people, here in Columbia.”

Both Larry and Paulette have a giving spirit and a soft spot for children and young people, in particular, as evidenced by their his-

tory of providing foster care. The couple provided foster care for 44 newborns until they could be placed with adoptive families. Needless to say, Tolton’s pro-life focus resonates with the couple.

They’ve also still found time to volunteer their time and talent for the benefit of our local Catholic community – Larry is a Fourth Degree Knight and a member of Council #1529 and Paulette is currently President-Elect in the local Ladies Auxiliary. Both volunteer to serve in ministry positions at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Parish.

Having spent his career in accounting fields – most recently with MFA Oil Company – Larry is a “numbers guy.” It’s no surprise that his fiscal prudence led them to explore a planned giving option to support their philanthropic priorities. Acting on advice from their various financial advisors, they’ve recently chosen to utilize IRA rollover gifts to support Tolton Catholic and their other favorite charities. Giving via direct rollover allows donors to meet IRA Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) obligations without realizing those monies as taxable income.

Larry states, “We’ve found this option to be particularly attractive in light of the recent tax law changes, and we intend to utilize this rollover option annually going forward.”

Steve Long|Barry O’Neill Award Winner

I

f you are confused as to why Steve Long is in this photo, rather than behind the camera, it’s because Steve was recognized in July 2018 as the recipient of the Barry O’Neill award by the Notre Dame Club of Central MO! The O’Neill award recognizes a recipient from Tolton Catholic and Helias Catholic who emulate the values of Notre Dame and mid-Missouri Catholic schools. He is pictured with members of the Notre Dame Club of Central MO. Steve was recognized for his years of volunteerism and servant leadership on behalf of Tolton Catholic. Steve is a constant presence at Tolton events, and can almost always be found with his camera in hand. Steve makes an effort to attend at least one event each year for every athletic team in order to get high quality photos that can be used in Tolton publications, especially the yearbook. Steve also makes his photos available on Shutterfly so families can download photos of their students.

Caleb Lucero (2015) Caleb successfully graduated from the US Naval Academy with a BS in Aerospace Engineering with an emphasis in Astronautics. Upon graduation, he received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps. After departing Annapolis, he will attend “the basic school” in Quantico, VA, followed by naval aviator training in Pensacola, FL in preparation for service as a marine pilot.

Caroline Parker (2015) Caroline graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas with a degree in Accounting and a minor in Economics. She is doing a fellowship year at IF:Gathering, a non-profit that seeks to gather, equip, and unleash women for the purposes God has for them. We host two conferences a year, write Bible studies, and create leadership tools for our women all across the world.
