the Dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences Sheila Arnibal, the Department Head of the Medical Technology Department Fatima Medel, and Richard Benedicto. Medel expressed her gladness at the outcome of the result as she recounted how this year has been a great improvement from last year, and hopes that next year’s batch would produce a 100 percent passing rate. “We are happy with the achievement and we give that to the faculty, the staff, the Medical Technology Department and to the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences,” Fr. Celiz concluded.

UNO-R’s Hiphop group bested the other colleges and universities through their intricate choreography and synchronized movements. “The boys did very well in executing their performance though they had conflicting schedules because of their studies,” said Barbara Cordova, LITMUS committee head. Innah Marie Brodit and Kervin Villarias dominated the dance floor and championed the Dance SportModern Standard Category. “I feel happy and proud to have represented the school. Our hard work really paid off and I’m so thankful for the support of the school,” said Brodit, adding that they started practicing during the semester break. Medical Technology freshman Floyd Ryan Perez paved his way to the first slot through his wit and confidence in Impromptu Speaking-English. “Perez is smart. He knows what he says and he really can convince the judges and audience with his ideas,” Cordova said. “It’s the first time that the University has a representative in Impromptu for WVPRISAA, and I’m confident that Perez would win,” she added. Perez said that he is excited to experience another fun competition and adds that he is “thankful to God for this opportunity and I feel motivated to be the best that I can be and hopefully bring [honor] to our University.” The University also landed second runner-up during the NOPSSCEA 2014 LITMUS contest. When asked about why there was no change, the Physical

Education instructor said that although that they had ample time to prepare, the students encountered problems like hectic schedules and academic pressures. “There is no problem for the financial support. But, we could not pull them out because the students themselves did not want to miss their classes,” Cordova explained. Meanwhile, Yasmine Cabalfin bagged the Ms. NOPSSCEA Sports title in the search for Mutya ng NOPSSCEA. Cabalfin said that she was very thankful that she had the chance to represent the University. To give recognition to UNO-R teaching and non-teaching employees for their years of service, and to provide incentive for the personnel to remain loyal to the institution, the University held the Service Awards 2015, last Sept. 10 at the main lobby. The said activity also served as the OAR administration’s annual tradition of expressing gratitude to the University’s workforce for being dedicated and loyal in giving service in the field of education. “Tonight’s recognition [to employees] is also very meaningful for it coincides with the recognition of the Augustinian Recollect as an order, 103 years ago, on September 1912,” Rev. Fr. Enrico Peter Silab, VP for Administration said during his welcome address. Three distinct awards were given

The test was done between 7 to 8 in the morning. before the patients had their breakfast, after which our doctors gave them prescriptions. It’s not only that they were tested for diabetes but they were also tested for hypertension at the same time,” added Arnibal.

The activity also served as an exposure for nursing students in preparation for their training and duty in the said community nursing area to conduct a follow-up check to see whether or not the patients were able to comply with the prescribed diet and medication. CNAHS plans to continue with the follow-ups to monitor their patients in their community nursing areas and to conduct the screening along with their other medical programs annually.

appreciate deeper the responsibilities and challenges that entail their future professions,” said Richelle Verdeprado, a mentor from the Social Work Department. “The pinning is a mark that we are ready to explore beyond the four walls of the classroom, to apply the skills we’ve learned, and to experience the field in line with our future careers,” emphasized by Jiefden Puntal, president of the Mass Comm Society.

When asked about how accomplishing the pinning had been for a parent, Myla Delos Santos, a mother of a Fourth Year Social Work student replied with, “Kaoverwhelming kay na meet mo ang mga requirements as a parent. Afterwards, the pinned Social Work students, together with their parents, held a program at the President’s Hall.

Arnibal named prayers, the students’ confidence in themselves, and the motivation to pass the examination as the main factors that affected the results, with motivation being the biggest drive. She also said that the numerous job opportunities for pharmacists and the companies that invite them for future employment were the incentives that greatly motivated the graduates. Meanwhile, three out of four takers in the MedTech Licensure Examinations passed, garnering 75 percent of the National Passing Rate. When asked about the Department’s plans to at least, maintain, and further improve the high rates of pharmacy and medical technology passers, Arnibal said that they are going to provide students

with more support and motivation by hiring qualified teachers and ensuring that the students’ capabilities will qualify for both their course requirements and the licensure examinations. “Aside from working hard and studying hard, they have to couple it with prayers, always with prayers, that they could pass the exams,” Arnibal advised. She also said that it’s not only preparing them mentally, but also physically, psychologically, and emotionally. She said that a person taking the licensure exam should be supported so that they will feel that, whether they would make it or not, there is someone who believes in their capacity that they can perform.

The rates of passers of the licensure examinations for both the Pharmacy and Medical Technology graduates of UNOR’s College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CNAHS) have gotten higher, as shown in the recent results. Compared to last year’s batch of four out of ten passers for the licensure examination for pharmacists, the results increased among the second batch of takers, in which six out of seven takers passed. “It’s higher than the previous result and it was a good performance for batch 2015,” CNAHS Dean Sheila Arnibal said. “For batch 2015, we got 85.71 percent and it is higher than the previous one that we got which was only 65 percent,” she added.

The seminar was initiated and organized by TAYO in partnership of Kwaderno Love Can Inc. and Nazareth Deu and Training Inc. TAYO is the biggest award giving body for youth organizations and was recognized by the ASEAN in 2006, and is co-organized by Senator Bam Aquino and The National Youth Commission.

APEC roadshow ‘raised awareness’ of PH’s economic state

by Angelika King

To know about the economic statuses of both national and Asian countries and their impact for development, the University hosted APEC 101 Seminar at the UNO-R Presidents’ Hall, Aug 5. Guest speaker Laura del Rosario, Undersecretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs, explained the importance of the country’s membership to APEC and talked about the economic situation of the Philippines. Del Rosario also explained how products from different countries are imported in the Philippines, and how they affect the country’s economic progress and vice versa. The seminar aims to give awareness to students about the economy of Asian countries, their business relationship which involves trading and investing as well as to help maintain order during many business transactions in the region. Furthermore, del Rosario talked to

the students through stories of different successful corporations and the persons behind them. Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is an organization for facilitating economic growth, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region Philippines is one of the 21 members of APEC in the Asia Pacific. APEC involves countries such as the United States; Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; China; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; Russia; Singapore; Republic of Korea; Chinese Taipei Thailand; and Vietnam. U-Week psyches up with Mystery Case Files

by Danielle Francis Olsen

The Psychology Society initiated its first Mystery Case Files booth featuring “psychopaths” for the University Week at SA2O2, Sept. 8-11. The said booth was prepared and facilitated by the members of the Psychology Society and also served as its fundraising activity for the upcoming Psychology month and additional funding for other future activities of the organization. The booth required students to form groups and investigate a made-up crime scene with four stations. Each station portrayed a dead victim and presented evidences and clues to help the group deduce the identity of the killer. The group with the fastest time record to investigate and answer correctly will be declared as the winner and will receive a prize from the organization. “We made a brave move to have come up with this idea. We wanted to do something unique and less latent that would encourage students to really think and at the same time, reflect psychology,” said Arvin Velasco, Psychology Society president. He added that their main objectives were

to entertain students and to inform them of how psychopaths would think and act during their educational debriefing session at the end of the activity. “It’s actually quite interesting for students to learn how a psychopath’s mind ticks. Many criminals are psychopaths and it would help if the students learn how these people think differently than average people do,” Velasco further said. In relation to the U-Week’s theme, the activity also emphasized learning by educating students about psychopathic criminals and encouraging them to share what they’ve learned and increase awareness. Velasco also quipped, “this activity offers opportunities for students to learn about crimes and about psychopaths. It helps them to be aware and it helps them to be observant of the people around them, since nowadays, you can’t really trust everyone. This kind of information can’t be normally taught inside the classroom.” Facilitators claim that feedbacks coming from the students were mostly positive and pushed more visitors to experience the activity.

New electronic entrance ID system ensures safety for library users by Roan Hope Ocaban

With the collaborative efforts of the Management Information System and Fray luis de leon Library, the Electronic Entrance ID System began its full-swing operation, June 17. Sheila dela Cruz, Director of Libraries, explained that they installed the system to ensure the safety of all library users. The system was designed by the MIS Office Head Alvin Mananquil. Through this system, the library will be able to check and monitor the students who will be granted full access to the library materials. For those who are not, they should first undergo the proper procedure of securing a library permit before they can use the resources. This is in accordance with the other purpose for which this system was built, and that is to check and verify the true identity of all library users. “This system will also help us in generating library usage report. From this system, the library will know who our frequent users are by checking the attendance,” dela Cruz said. Furthermore, these reports can be an aid to their decision making on how to improve the library and its services more. They’ll be able to easily know which college has the greatest number of attendance and frequency of library use and which periods of the day are the peak hours. Last March, the Library also installed a Bibliotheca Security Gate along with Smart Station. “The security gate is part of library security and control system and the main purpose of having a security gate in our library is to protect our materials from losses,” dela Cruz said.

CIT seals fourpeat win in Bible Quiz 2015 by Charlene Grace Gelotin

The College of Information and Technology Falcons plucked the coveted golden trophy in the fourth season of U-Week 2015’s Bible Quiz at the Auditorium, Sept. 8. Coming in second was the team from the College of Arts and Sciences while the representatives from the High School Department landed in the third spot. The bottom line of the Brain Challenge was to promote the overall academic development of the students, focusing not only on mathematical and scientific subjects. “Remember that our theme is love and learning. We cannot simply just forego the activities in U-Week without, of course, testing the capacity

desire to have an official icon for the University. “Saint Augustine, as a Father of the Church, should also be regarded as a father of the community, because, without him, there can be no Order of Augustinian Recollects. In doing so [acknowledging St. Augustine], the students could also emulate his values of faith, loyalty to the church, love, and [the] defense of the Catholic [faith],” Jovito Moral said. The top three winning works were recognized the following day. Ismael Jallorina, Jr. from the College of

Engineering bagged the first place while Windsor Linus Sumbillo from the High School Department and Paul Michael Genovate of the College of Education ranked second and third places, respectively. Prizes include certificates and cash for all the participants with Php 3,000 for the first place, Php 2,000 for the second place, Php 1,000 for third place and Php 500 for consolation prizes. Jallorina’s work was presented at the opening salvo of the University Week in September.

Engr. Le Clair revisits UNO-R

by Charlene Grace Gelotin

Empowering students to break boundaries, Engr. Divina Fortuna de Jesus Le Clair graced the University Gymnasium with tales of success and inspiration, last August 4. Currently, Engr. Le Clair has worked as Materials, Propellants, and Environmental Engineer on the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) stationed at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA for 25 years now. The alumna who took her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering degree at the University spoke about one of the successful imaging scientific instruments of NASA, the Hubble Space Telescope to the high school and college students. Afterwards, she openly shared how she battled through her struggles, stressing the importance of communication skills and attitude as a professional. “It’s not enough to be able to do the math; in the workplace, communication

skills and attitude are crucial,” she said. Also, she urged everyone to break boundaries, saying, “If I can do it, you can do better.” After her talk, the students were given the chance to raise questions. When she was asked about the conflict between faith and science, she boldly answered, “My faith is not a hindrance. On the contrary, it puts me where I am now.” “Engr. Le Clair is great. She taught me that even years from now, we will always have more to discover,” said a Grade 10 student from Bata National High School. The schools that participated in the event were UNO-R High School and College of Engineering, Bata National High School, La Consolation College - Bacolod, La Consolation College - Gardenville, Sum - ag National High School, Luis-Hervias ArgoIndustrial National High School, Bacolod City National High School, and Domingo Lacson National High School.

She also claimed that out of the 49 bags procured last year, only nine bags are left and are available for requests from possible recipients. Donors were also given instructions on what to do and what to avoid after the donation. On the other hand, the CNAHS also initiated a diabetic screening at the same date, to help diagnose patients with diabetes and give them proper medication and diet prescriptions. “Our target patients are those who really did not have the experience of having their blood sugar checked. Aside from the other people who passed by and were screened, our targets are the thirty-five identified patients from our community nursing area in Brgy. 40, who will also be followed-up during our related learning experience there,” said Sheila Arnibal, RN, MN, Dean of CNAHS. Nursing, Medical Technology and Pharmacy students of the University facilitated the screening and dispensing of the medications with the help of some of the College’s alumni faculty members. The said activity was able to cater a total of 50 patients, who took a fasting blood sugar test. Patients were oriented

Donors are required to have at least six to eight hours of sleep prior to the scheduled donation and should have no intakes of alcoholic beverages and nicotine. It is also a requisite for the donors to be physically healthy at the time of the donation, which means that they should have no sore throat, cold, fever or allergies and should have blood pressure levels within the acceptable limits which were monitored by the volunteers. The donors also underwent blood typing within the duration of the activity. “The purpose of this bloodletting is to help the members of the UNO-R community and their immediate family members to obtain blood, whenever necessary. In case there is a need for the students or the faculty, including their families to get blood donations, they can just go to the clinic for a referral slip,” said Athena Joy De Paula Pallas, RN, one of the coordinators of the activity. The collected bags will be given to the Red Cross for storage, in which case the latter will turnover cards corresponding to every bag to the University Clinic. The cards will be used as reference for the issuance of referral slips to be given to UNO-R community

Staying true to its nature as a Recollect Catholic school, the Religious Education Department celebrated the second Catholic Faith Festival (CFF), Sept. 24- 25. Making an emphasis on International Apostolic Education, the two-day celebration was opened by a liturgical commemoration with Fr. Julius Marcos, OAR as the main celebrant and featured activities and competitions such as Cosplay, Short Film Making, Poster Making, Logo Making, Song Writing, Photography, Quiz Bees, and Miniature Church Building contests, and an Amazing Race. The festivity’s highlight was the confirmation of the students where Mon Signor Vicente Navarra, Bishop of the Diocese of Bacolod, was invited to take part in. “I think one of the unique features of the second CFF is the confirmation,” Dr. Dennis Madrigal, head of the Religious Education Department stated. “This year, we introduced the sacrament of confirmation to college students who were not yet confirmed.” Madrigal also said that this year’s ReEd Day became more special and meaningful as it had coincided with the year-long celebration of the International Year of Educational Apostolate. The winners of the different competitions during the festival are as follows: Joseph Escanes for Poster Making, Paolo Agustin Mabugat and

Diwani Duropan, Guidance counsellor for the college of nursing and allied Health Sciences, thinks that there is nothing really wrong with the trend as it is a way for the youngsters of today’s generation to express themselves and seek affirmation from their peers through social media. However, as much as it must maintain its essence of truthfulness, it should be handled with careful consideration as it might hurt someone’s feelings. Generally, people type in praises and compliments to avoid hurting their peers’ feelings. but if you think that what you really feel about someone might illicit negativity, think twice before typing your actual opinion or sugar-coat it and just say “tbh, gwapa/gwapo, buot, alam, RK, cool kid”; instead, express it to them privately and personally or just maintain your silence. indeed, there are times when “you say it best when you say nothing at all.” TbH, how was that song reference at the end?

in a heated debate match, every time an affirmative speaker presents an argument, the opposition outlines a counter-argument through facts, statistics, or mere logic to refute the validity, potency, and soundness of the affirmative’s case. in a calamitous break-up, every time an unfaithful lover insists on his/her untainted fidelity, the other ticks off specific instances, eye witnesses, and even petty text messages to deny his/her ex-sweetheart’s claims. in a judiciary court, every time an accused is charged of a crime, he/she reasons out with evidences to rebut complaints and allegations.

Ready. Tune. That could be the scenario. Twenty years. it could have been 20 years in service of his countrymen. Twenty years of fulfilling his sought-after dream. Twenty years of honor and pride. if only time and fate conspired during that time. Gaspar baron, 43, once dreamed to be a police man. but the reality struck as he was standing by the gate and the bell rang at 7:30am. He gave his morning smiles while carefully checking the trunk of the cars that entered the university’s premises. For three years now, as a security guard in the university, Gaspar chose to take a job closer to his dream. maybe, not set on the bloody crime scene, but on a battlefield that he now loves and enjoys. long before Gaspar landed the job he now has, on the sideline, he had been painting houses, building and other infrastructures. in search for an additional income, Gaspar had also tried being a tailor of varsity wears. now, he is in a different phase where dealing with students, parents, ensuring the observance of the rules and regulations of the school and understanding various attitude and responses are the everyday scenario he faces. “Some violators are really hard-headed. Sometimes, we can’t control parents who just barged in without permission. usually, i’m having a bad day because of it. but it’s okay,” he says. as he narrated, there were times when some would test his patience. but Gaspar remained calm and would choose the best and appropriate way to deal with such circumstances. Gaspar, married to his wife three years his junior, is also a father of two boys (14 and 16). being a criminology undergraduate of bago city college for a semester, he wishes his children to finish their studies. He was not able to hurdle till the end of

the 4-year course because of the lack of financial assistance. now, his two boys are enrolled in one of the public high schools in the city of bacolod. Gaspar’s wife opted to venture into direct selling. also, they have a sari-sari store where they also sell homemade peanut butter for an extra money. They modestly work hard for a living. Gaspar’s persistence draws him to financially accommodate the growing needs of his family. His earnings didn’t stop him to look for alternatives that would add to their savings. currently, he engages himself into swine raising with two pigs at the moment. “i’m taking this one step at a time. The pay i have in here is not that much. Sometimes, it’s just right but at times, it’s not enough for our needs,” he adds. being a full-time security guard, Gaspar also misses his social life. He seldom bonds with his friends because of his work. During holidays like christmas and new Year, he and his colleagues would have to draw lots as to who will be on duty on those given holidays. Sadly, last year, Gaspar spent his new Year away from his family. as Gaspar grows in his job, simple joys such as bonuses in December and seeing students he is acquainted with in the university walk on stage during graduation day bring him genuine happiness. but as Gaspar continues his dreams for a better future, he has one main goal to accomplish. “i hope for the next ten years, it will be still the same. if blessed, my children will be able to graduate and fulfill their dreams. i don’t want them to live the life i lived before,” he hopes. a successful life is not measured by one’s wealth, it’s how experiences and reality molds you into a great person sometimes you have thought you can never be. as for Gaspar, maybe the law of attraction has made him land a noble career in line with his dream of becoming a policeman- a security guard. now, as he faces the everyday battle of life, way more difficult than those in the authority face in a real battlefield, he keeps an alert mind that he will eventually survived the test of time. With the gift of family and the passion that kindles him till now, he can soar greater heights and be the hero he wishes to be.

especially in africa and the other 50 percent for the infrastructure development and maintenance.“The university did not allocate a certain amount of money for this place. it is only with the greatest effort of Rev. Fr. Dacanay that the Green Heart was converted into a coffee shop,” added Jerrie mae. The relaxation Green Heart offers you isn’t something for sale but something with a noble and heroic purpose. “i like staying at Green Heart because it’s more peaceful there than other places,” shared christian Flores, a 3rd year agriculture student and an all-time customer of Green Heart. “i usually rest and relax there. The plants surrounding the place makes it more refreshing,” he said in addition. With all the school works, projects, and research papers not to mention all the worldly stress the academic world gives, it is only justifiable to take a break from all of them and find the inner peace within you. Green Heart could bring you this peace. Start moving away from expensive restaurants and malls and taste the simplicity and serenity of Green Heart and be one of those who say: “manang Jerrie, coffee please?”

Steal a minute of your time, put a break in your daily routine and try to glance at every corner of your room. Step out of your house and look at the bigger world. photographs, pictures you see? upon entering one’s house, what catches our attention the most except for the house itself are the photos, particularly family pictures hung around the walls, displayed on the tables and photobooks found in the living room. With photographs affecting a great part of our lives, business slowly found its way in. but as technology develops and makes our works faster and easier, we sometimes forget the value and meaning of taking pictures. What is really the so called photography in the past and at present? about two decades ago, filmed cameras were needed to take pictures. Films had to be taken to shops for developing so that you’ll have family pictures to display at home. “photography needs to be learned and studied because it has many aspects that need to be perfected. photographers in the past would really consider a lot of factors just to take the perfect shot since we use film and once you press the capture button, you cannot undo it. examples are the positions of lighting, angle of the subject, timing and how you would process it in the dark room. Temperature and chemicals should also be properly checked as well as the type of film to use,” Hernan Ferrer Jr. shared, a 62 year old photographer and has engaged himself in photography for 46 years. “photographers in the past are really responsible and committed to photographic art that they can offer to their customers, thinking that those pictures taken will be handed down to their clients’ children or to the next generation and i believe that that kind of value can no longer be seen at the present,” Hernan added. “There are many who hold the digital camera and would just shoot and shoot. i call them imaging and do not consider them photography because real photography should be done through knowledge and skill,” he explained. at the present, films and cameras do not have to be developed. Gabriel Singson, a second year bSiT student and is presently a photographer and co-owner of mike’s Facebooth said “being a photographer in the 20th century has many advantages since during the previous times, technology wasn’t really improved. comparing now and then, photographs in the past are all black and white, now it’s all colored and digitalized, additionally it’s also much more efficient compared to pictures before and can even be stored in data.” in the late 90s, people had difficulty going to studious for picture taking and looking for a photographer was a hassle but now with technology at its best, photo booths are found anywhere and can be placed everywhere. in a short span of time, photo business has boomed. “photo booth businesses have become a trend because people nowadays are into selfies and pictorials. The photo booth business gained its popularity when taking selfies became popular. people wanted to see what they look like in their pictures, why not make a click and print business out of it? This is the reasoning behind the photo booth business,” Gabe expressed. Taking pictures of course isn’t mainly purposed for selfies; rather, they are useful during special occasions and events that will be of lasting memory. not temporary but of a lifetime. Jeh mark bibangco, owner and photographer of Jm Studious started his photography business five years ago and has taken shots at many events for more than a hundred customers. “photography for me is God given privilege to capture beauty and emotions. it is a big tool to enter another life,” he said. He shoots for different kinds of events like weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, baptisms, pageants, and even shoots videos and trailers. “being able to capture memories gives me joy in different levels. in fact, what pays me more in this kind of business is not the money but the applauses, thank you, hugs from the bride and groom and all the appreciations my clients give me. These are all one big paycheck i get every time i shoot,” he said. photographers are born, not made as they say. To make someone happy through taking pictures is a great and unforgettable achievement and experience of a photographer. it is a great pleasure to be a part of someone’s special event in life and moreover, to capture it. “Jm Studious is my craft. if you would ask me where i can see myself 20 or 30 years from now, i can fervidly answer you that i’ll still be holding that camera of mine and take photographs,” added Jeh mark. aside from roofs, doors, windows and walls, pictures have been considered as part of our home. This is the reason why photography should not be taken for granted. How far the world may move on and develope the values and real meaning of photography should never be forgotten and buried along time. photography then and now may have been so different because of present technologies but what’s more important is the love a photographer holds for what he does. being a photographer does not only mean taking pictures but capturing moments turned memories. photographs play a very helpful role in our lives since they can serve as proof and memory saver. in this world where everything is temporary, memories too may fade as time passes by and what could only be left are pictures that can remind us of particular events in our lives and how happy and satisfying we have lived in this so called paradise.

a domino effect and once someone sees another person doing it and how it has affected the number of likes and comments on that certain post, they would imitate that action. However, it has been generally observed that ‘TbH’ does not live up to its moniker. it seems that the “honest” part of the phrase has been lost on the vague, generalized and almost always positive comments. “every netizen who is fond of the TbH game praises his or her friend and asks for a TbH in return,” ariane aristosa, a medical Technology student states. “You can notice the TbHs given to them are usually positive comments, usually compliments.” The sincerity is lost half of the time on these comments as maria cristina Tumbis of the college of business and accountancy shares that the TbH trend was supposed to bring honest opinion or reaction but instead, people just type TbH and add words of flattery. Trends come and go, but it seems that the TbH virus is here to stay for a while. and as its complete meaning suggests, it talks of honesty and frankness as it would

it’s Friday evening. There is no class tomorrow and fortunately for you, your instructors have not given out any type of homework or any take home projects, and they certainly haven’t announced that there will be a quiz on monday. You are free to do whatever you want for the rest of the evening and the weekend. What better way to spend the night with a few hours trip to the cyber world? Facebook is calling your name and you can’t just shake off the possibility of numerous notifications, private messages, friend requests and interesting updates on gossip and news on your feed that require your attention. However, when you open your account, a barrage of “TbH” posts greets you. You sigh. What else is new? “TbH” has been a trend that started in the mid to later parts of 2014 and is still continuing today. The slang is an acronym of the phrase ‘to be honest’ and it has been a popular means of expressing frank observations on a peer by netizens all over the world. This trend is seen popping up on social media sites but it is more prevalent on Facebook. common “TbH” posts always start with a “lmS (acronym for “like my status”) for a TbH” or a “comment something/anything/insert whateverword –you-want-people-to-comment-on for a TbH”. Some people just choose who they want to give a TbH to as they don’t know others who liked or commented on their statuses. However, there are also others who give TbHs with the generic “smart, amazing funny, rich kid, cool kid” or “gwapa, buot, alam” and other answers that go something along those lines. So, what makes this TbH thing viral? From the point of view of alec Villarante, a psychology student from the college of arts and Sciences, TbH’s notoriety is because of how it eases one’s boredom. it’s just for fun and just like every other trend, it has

This is how debate matches, break-ups, and interrogations work. but is this the way Sonas work as well? on a sultry august 3 afternoon, Vice-president Jejomar binay delivered an equally sultry “True State of the nation address” in retaliation to president benigno aquino’s 6th and final Sona a week before. Veep binay exposed the alleged “true” state of the nation as he outlined a litany of the current administration’s flops and failures in the past five years, boldly pointing out how aquino’s Sonas had been non-transparent. “What we heard are reports full of stories, lifting one’s self and just like the previous Sona’s- blaming,” he said. Sporting the desire to wipe the hazy glaze off of people’s eyes, binay enumerated a handful of sinking ships that aquino apparently failed to include in his Sona: the plagued metro Rail Station, the questionable bangsamoro basic law, the contentious Disbursement acceleration program and particularly the tragic SaF 44 mamasapano incident.

The DeAN’s lisTer Yes, she might be acing all her tests while you are struggling with mere seat works. but intelligent women know that intelligence is never defined by a grade equivalent. So, the best you can do is embrace your own brilliance and wit. an impressive iQ is not what you need to win her over but rather, a pleasing and charming personality. be bold, be confident, be open-minded because attitude will get you farther than sheer brains, kiddo. “personally, i have high standards for men even before becoming a dean’s listee. but becoming one, i expect, perhaps, that he would have the same line of thinking as i am. in that way, i can say we complement or understand each other. because when we see the world together [in the same way], chances are, and we’d end up together in the future... [also,] i fancy having letters from him on a random day, too,” revealed marianne Therese cabana, bSmTii, as dean’s listee for two consecutive semesters last school year. THe beauTY Queen You are wondering how she can steal hearts the way she can steal pageant crowns. but, you’ve never wondered if she got other guys chasing after her because you know she does. Girls like these are bombarded with variety of offers from a variety of guys on a regular basis. Since this is the case, what you have to do is be different. Deviate from the usual. “in mamasapano, 44 had sacrificed their lives and many were injured, but their heroic deeds were not even mentioned in the Sona,” he scoffed. Yet, even if Veep binay did not point out these flaws, Filipinos already know them too well to be reminded. Right now, what the people need is not a catalogue of unsolved dilemmas but rather, solutions to these very problems. people need more than just plain sympathy. They are in search for answers. also, the former aquino’s cabinet member, emphasized how pretentious and deceitful the statistics aquino presented in his speech can be. “it’s very easy to pick a number, numbers that at first glance are brilliant and interesting. but the truth cannot be hidden by denying : five years later , many are still suffering , hungry and unemployed,” he added. but then, there are two faces to a coin. could all these just be mere sourgraping of a rejected man not chosen to be the president’s presidential bid for the 2016

not that knowledgeable. Fangirls may be loud, obsessive and preoccupied at times but, you have to understand and love them for it, okay? “also, it’s cute to think that he feels a tad insecure about my idols even though he knows the fact that what i have for them is mere admiration,” said areen mae Reyes, a bSmT frosh, who’s deeply into Korean pop. The iNTrOVerT contrary to popular belief, introverts are not hard-to-talk individuals. Yes, they may be a bit socially awkward and reserved but that’s because they are more inclined to deep conversations than petty small talk. if you are into an introvert, know that she will not always voice out how she feels or tell you what she is thinking. That is the very reason why you have to be one good observant who has the eye for subtle hints and non-verbal gestures. let her see that your intentions are pure and genuine. coax her into sharing her stories one at a time. Don’t think twice on giving her space when she asks for it. When asked about what piece of advice she’ll give a suitor courting an introvert, chloe Jae awacay, a coy first year civil engineering student, answered equally coy words, “Try his best and find the courage.” They say chivalry is dead. They say gone were the days when a gentleman would have to struggle through the eye of a needle before earning that treasured, “YeS!” They say that in a world this instantaneous, getting a girl is made instant as well. See gentlemen, you are faced with this gargantuan challenge of defying such climate of opinion and proving them all wrong. but, you don’t have to be a knight in shining armor to make that girl fall. You can simply be that guy who writes her 2-stanza poems even though you literally suck at grammar, the one who sings her love songs even though you know that once you start singing she might start leaving as well, or the one who is never busy for her even though your tight schedule holds a fatal knife by your throat. To all ladies, if you listen through Trevor Wesley’s pop ballad song “chivalry is Dead,” it can give you one crucial reminder: Girl, let a real man pick up the slack and treat you with respect. Yes, patiently wait for the man who would love you especially on times when you can’t love yourself.

elections? or could this be just binay’s way of turning tables now that spotlights are focused on his controversies? Whatever the reason may be, the Filipinos deserve to know the real truth. They own the fleeting right to be informed accurately and befittingly. The government is already pretty chaotic for the people to entertain pretty chaotic truths. but given this topsy-turvy scenario, they must have to examine and scrutinize closer what they are being spoon fed. Filipinos would have to decide for themselves. Yes, Sonas are not supposed to be like debate matches or break-ups or interrogations where different parties clash in what they perceive as right, accurate, or genuine. no one would have to refute the other party’s arguments, insist his claims, and reason out with evidences because no conflict must happen in the first place. The State of the nation address is supposed to be a reflection of the country’s condition, isn’t it?

Lack of time. We usually put Time on the blame upon being asked about why we haven’t accomplished a certain task or work assigned to us yet. Failing to meet the deadline and not submitting our work promptly would directly lead to a rationale about how limited our time is. Twenty-four hours a day and counting. Is our time really limited and inadequate? Do we really lack time or worse– do we have a greater reason behind being late? Time is one of the most important elements in this world. It could never be bought, replaced, nor controlled by our own hands. We would always say that time flies too swift and we never get a chance to do what we were supposed to do. But the thing is, it’s not time that should adjust to us, and obviously, it should be the other way around. Everyone’s aware that a day is composed of 24 hours and every hour contains 60 minutes. Try observing, if we are in a classroom with our teacher lecturing, it seems that time suddenly becomes so slow but when we’re resting, doing nothing, or doing something we enjoy, time moves faster than the speed of light. How can this be? It is not because time is trying to play tricks on us. Time is constant. Time does not change its speed. Instead, it depends on how we spend it. We’re never free. Each day, we need to carry our burdens and responsibilities. We would always have things and works to do or finish. If we would not know what to do, that is when time is really wasted, but we would always mistake it for lack of time. In this case, it is not time that we lack, it is direction. Take the case of our current president, Benigno Aquino III. With the entire dilemma that our country is facing, our dear President has not taken a clear course of actions. Put into view the nebulous case of the Maguindanao Massacre; six years later, still justice has not been laid. Another issue under the Aquino

administration which has outraged the public is the news referring to the Fallen 44 on January 25, 2015. Forty-four Special Action Force (SAF) members died in a police operation created by the Special Action Forces (SAF) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) which purpose is to serve a warrant of arrest to terrorists. Even though this issue was a year ago, a lot of questions are still left unanswered. Although the government had presented a response as to whom the blame could be passed on, allegations and theories on what really happened still hound us. Justice is all what the families of these SAF Commandos and victims of the massacre is asking for, justice which the present administration is greedy to partake of. Sure, it is hard to improve a nation that has acculturated graft and corruption for many years. But a six-year term is not too short to, at the least, improve a country or simply give justice to those who

rally that caused traffic on the road. One could not simply avoid the consequences of his actions. One could not just go on with his life after causing trouble to other people. After all, we share the same country. We breathe the same air. We are interrelated and interdependent with one another. Now tell me, is it just to call you a certain name and blame my actions on someone else? Some people do not want to be held responsible because they do not want to ruin their image. Such example was when President Aquino vaguely admitted his mistake during the Mamasapano encounter. As the head of the state, he should have taken the toll of the misinformation and incompetent chain of command of the military. Why in the world did he authorize a suspended police officer to be involved in the said operation? Until now, this case has not been solved, and he has not yet let the words – “I’m sorry” come out of his mouth. Proud persons tend to take the effects of their words and actions for granted. Simple wrongdoing can greatly affect others, and might cause a huge impact in their lives. Pride leads to misunderstanding and destroys

relationship. Pride is a spark that can cause a wildfire. Elton John is right – “Sorry seems to be the hardest word.” Admitting one’s fault takes courage and a lot of responsibility. It is like undressing oneself in public. That is why people would rather blame others than take the blame itself. Shame and fear also hold one back. However, if we continue to hide behind our sphere of non-admittance to mistakes, what will happen to those we caused inconvenience? How about those we have hurt? Would we just let them suffer because we are afraid to say it is our fault? I think we should stop blaming other people and start accepting our mistakes. In our contexts, we should stop blaming the government with the problems happening in our blame no moRe/10

The truth is: everyone is afraid to be held accountable. When a problem or an issue arises, we constantly seek for the person responsible for it. We are irate when someone or something causes inconvenience to us, and we denounce those who we think should be blamed. We keep on pointing our fingers, but, did we ever for once take the culpability of something we did? Did we courageously admit our own fault? We are given the liberty to do whatever we want. We have the laws that protect our rights in practicing and exercising this freedom. However, we should not forget that our rights encompass responsibilities that must be observed. For instance, we could not just post something on social media without being sensitive to other people. Yes, it is our right to express our opinion, but we must not exploit others’ rights as we practice our own rights. One cannot just say, “It is my opinion, and I do not care what other people think.” Rather he or she must say, “It is my opinion and I am responsible if it affects other people.” Since social media has become a very powerful tool in stirring public discussion, everyone is accountable to whatever he or she posts on such social media sites. One could not just stay mum after insulting a religious group having a

deserve it. It is not time that PNoy lacks but the progressing path that will lead us into development. Linking the issue to the upcoming elections, before candidates announce their desire for any position, they should have platforms they will need to focus on in the six years of presidency. Citizens would vote for them believing that the candidates have better plans and direction to lead a nation in this length of time given to them. For most candidates, platforms instantly evanesce in thin air like bubbles being blown away upon their declaration and oathtaking. On the contrary, a leader should not lead a country if he himself does not have a clear direction to take within the next six years. Zig Ziglar quoted it right “Lack of direction, not lack of time is the problem. We all have twenty-four hours a day.” Let’s stop believing in that old cliché of time flying so fast and start realizing directions in whatever things we do.

It is not new in the setting of the Philippine elections for the candidates to hit at each other in any way they could just to degrade each other’s reputation. It is not new that when an election approaches, the candidates are persuading every Filipino to believe in them and in the things that they know are lies. The Philippines is a wonderful country. It is simply that most politicians, if not all, who are leading the country are obviously self-centered. The Philippines have been led by some people belonging to rich folks with financial power. The problem is that some of them claim that they started poor but worked harder to gain the life they have now while others who are already rich claim that they should not be accused of corruption nor of any issue related to governance. If the candidates came from a poor family, it doesn’t imply that they could solve the struggles of every Filipino, rich and poor. Yes, they may understand because they’ve experienced what it is to be poor or rich. However, merely understanding the condition is not

enough to lead a nation. The same goes with being a leader from a rich family. Their richness is not the sole solution to the weighty issues and conflicts of all Filipinos. It is sad that some of the candidates are not being true even in their premature campaigns. They resort to using gimmicks that are not even relevant to the Filipino politics instead of advocating true issues concerning the Filipino people. Today, another election is nearing and we, Filipinos, are confronted with the same issues – calamities, world peace, defending our territories, corruption, killings and massacre, rivalry between politicians, US colonization and imperialism, poverty, unemployment, and a bunch more. These issues remain unsolved and continue to affect the whole nation and even the world. In 2016, the Philippines will be succeeded by another leader. Still, it will be hard to pick one especially that presidential candidates are still seriously at work nudging each other from the candidacy so they could ensure a win in the coming

uality facilities are essential to every student’s learning. It is especially so among the tertiary level students who should have all kinds of equipping for the actual work outside school and for acquisition of life skills. Where else could students start practicing these skills if not at the University? However, in the University, laboratories and some other facilities are not functional. If they are, proper maintenance is needed. For years, this issue has been raised by the Tolentine Star for the Administration to resolve with urgency. We are raising it once more, hopefully for the last time. Every three years, the administration of the University undergoes a revamp. But, this revamp should not imply that the issues, especially those concerning the student body, would be co-terminous with the previous administration. Three years may not be enough to refurbish the issues concerning the students and even the whole UNO-Rian community. Three years may be too short to fix things properly. However, despite the lack of time, three years is sufficient to at least start resolving the problems or at least completely resolve some. What the previous administration has done especially regarding the facilities at the University would facilitate their completion by the new administration. The students are paying their tuition and other fees which include laboratory fees, computer fee, development fee, internet access fee, and library fee, among others. Admittedly, the administration has done some redevelopment to somehow compensate the student’s payments. Some repainting, construction of the beach volley court, renovation of buildings, and additional canteen are visible. And, yes, quality teachers have been hired, but just like the students, these teachers need quality facilities to produce quality students. Most programs require laboratories - better laboratories – for the students to be provided with better facilities and equipment for the application of the theories they learn in the classrooms. The new administration has three years or more to serve the UNO-R community. Three years is enough to continue and enhance what the previous administration has started. We put our faith in this administration who have been chosen to lead the UNO-R community to continue the mission and vision of UNO-R in the Augustinian Recollect style and charism. After all, we are all in one roof living the UNO-Rian spirit to bring positive change in the community.

elections. Yet, that is not exactly as easy one could guess. Today, we are just driven by who really speaks stronger and firmer. It is undeniable that many Filipinos today are easily and greatly influenced by the words of the candidates. Is it maybe because most of us are getting tired of supposedly great true leaders’ promises? Picking a true leader is seeing not just what he/she could promise, nor what he/she is capable of with his/her degrees and credentials, nor how many criminals he/she has killed, nor if his/her parents are icons, nor if he/she has a good family. We should not allow our ears to become the only foundation of selecting our next leaders. Have our eyes see of what and who they truly are. Be careful in choosing our next president. For me, a good president knows respect. He/she must know what the constitution is and have respect for it. Observe how most of the politicians are involved in issues and scam scandals. Meaning, that they are not afraid of being penalized. Meaning, they are not afraid not to abide the laws. A good president must respect the Philippine constitution and its citizenry. Another, the president must know what independence is. Although we had been colonized by other countries, but, the Philippines and its people need a strong president who could stand by his decisions and not become a puppet of the leaders of other countries and of those people who are greedy of the country’s wealth and power. Thus, we must call for a leader who can withstand others’ manipulation. Our leader must possess the bravery to contend for what is right to protect his/her countrymen and the Philippines. People are entitled to their own thoughts and opinions as much as we are entitled to our religious freedom.”

From the moment we start to concretely grasp the realities of the world, our parents, above anyone else, when asked about the beginning of everything, will always resort to what for me is probably the most cliché and the most overused explanation ever—that the entire universe was created within seven days by a supernatural entity, mostly religion based. Religion probably has the biggest piece in the pie graph of an individual’s life. Ever since humans have evolved into rational beings, we have always been designed to worship. Though there is no definite evidence with regards to whom we should dedicate our entire devotion, there is this certain drive inside us to submit to some ever-powerful being. It comes in all forms and sorts; from worshiping the sun, mountains, streams, seas, oceans, and even different idols. Some sprouted from different natural phenomena, some came from historical accounts, but most came from what people claim as strong faith. But each is a simple manifestation of our strong thrust to worship. But what’s really boggling my mind is that despite its concept—a form of worship, it is one of the leading reasons why the world had been and has always been in chaos and discord. Ever since written history began, religion has played a very significant role in most of history’s wars and conflicts. One of the most noted is the Crusade, a military voyage to reclaim the Holy Land from the Muslims. Throughout the world, there is a rough estimation of 4,200 legit and functioning religions. Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Shinto, Confucianism, etc.: all are diverse and unique systems of religion, but each and every form of worship boils down to one single purpose—to give the highest religious fervor to a certain god. Each of us is entitled to our own belief and faith, even how true or absurd you find some, we each have our right to religious freedom. As stated in Article III, Section 5 of the 1986 Philippine Constitution, we are entitled to “the free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination or preference, shall forever be allowed.” Thus, regardless of our faith, we’re still eligible of our rights and freedom, theists and atheists alike. We live in a world where we are all used to meeting people with their own expression of faith. Admit it or not, coming across someone who’s an atheist is quite an unusual feat, especially in our country where 85 percent of the population are Roman Catholics. On the other hand, from the perspective of an atheist, the term “usual” is superficial when it comes to how frequent they come across people who would even die for their faith. As an atheist, and yes, I am one, it’s quite funny when people over react the moment they ask my religion. They tend to immediately associate me with satanic devotion or anything of the same league. They conclude right away that I am a man without proper moral values, manners, and conducts. I become less of a person. For the record, being atheist has nothing to do with Satanism or anything like that. Atheists do not believe in anything supernatural, which includes, any god, angel, demon, devil, heaven, hell, etc. Also, I believe that having a religious faith is not a requirement for a morally correct life. Rather, it is how you perceive and how you identify what is right from what is wrong. And lastly, being an atheist doesn’t make you, in any way, lesser of a person. Never. Actually, four out of five impressions of me are all negative. Too much? Maybe. But what can I do? People are entitled to their own thoughts and opinions as much as we are entitled to our religious freedom. This is one of the ironies I face every day, having to deal with the complexities and the unfairness of the world. I always opt not to give an immediate, yet rash and impulsive reaction on whatever people say about me. I just put in my mind that these are close-minded people with myopic view of my situation. I just whole-heartedly embrace the burden that comes along with the path that I have chosen to take. I believe that I am not the only person caught in this situation. I share this sentiment with all other atheists who are suffering from all the prejudicial words and actions of people who speak solely on their hollow and shallow understanding of the meaning and essence of atheism. The moment a person decides to take on this path, which for me is the path of true enlightenment, he needs to bear with all the consequences more than enjoy the benefits and privileges coupled with it. I believe it is not a choice. We are born without religion. I embrace the ideologies of Dr. Richard Dawkins, one of the most prominent atheists of the contemporary world. According to him, there is no such thing as a Christian child: only a child of Christian parents. The belief and religion of children are based on the belief of their parents—a practice which for me should cease. According to Dawkins’ The God Delusion, “religious opinion is the one kind of parental opinion that—by almost universal content— can be fastened upon children who are, in truth, too young to know what their opinion really is.” For the record, I am religious. I just don’t AN ATheisT’s DilemmA/10

believe in any supernatural entity who created the entire universe, a sin punisher, a dream granter, and someone who answers prayers and interferes with our daily activities. To sum up my faith, I would like to reiterate a quotation from the world-renowned Albert Einstein, and yes, Einstein is an atheist: “To sense that behind anything that can be experienced there is a something that our mind cannot grasp and whose beauty and sublimity reaches us only indirectly and as a feeble reflection, this is religiousness. In that sense I am religious.”

to take righteous decisions and stand for them. The president must be an honest model of respect, positivism, and compassion. Granting that the president is influential, especially to the other leadership in local government units, he/she should know and feel what his/her countrymen are going through. He must be compassionate with the things happening around. And of course, the president must be straighforward, especially during the campaign period. He/she runs for the position, therefore, he/she must move and take action to his/ her platforms and be responsible and accountable for them. Leading millions of people is definitely not a joke! That is why the president must be committed to bring integrity and positive change. He/she must be a role model for the president is whom most people are looking up to. For me, it doesn’t matter if the president comes from a rich or poor family. What counts is how he/she was grown and how he/she inhabits the spirit of true leadership today. The Philippines has been through a great deal of ups and piles. We had been led by 15 presidents, some of whom respected our ballots while some did not. Some Filipinos’ expectations were met and some were not. In 2016, we will vote for the 16th President of the Philippines. I hope that we have learned from the previous administrations. Whoever may win, the decision of the Filipinos must be abided by. Still, we must use our foresight and know what would take place later, for our duties as Filipinos does not end at the election. We are responsible and accountable of the decision of the majority, just as the leaders, not only the president, are for their promises and actions. From page 12

During the program, the UNO-R community paid tribute through an audiovisual presentation to the late Rev. Fr. Cornelio Moral, OAR whose demise last December 1, 2014 caused a lot of grief. Dr. Dennis Madrigal, head of the Religious Education Department, shared that Fr. Moral, former Director of Religious Education, was a strong advocate of Catholic values and traditions and had the drive and motivation to make people love and be aware of their faith. “We celebrate Christmas because Jesus is so special to our hearts,” Director of Student Affairs Dexter Paul Dioso commented. “Father Moral was also very special to our community. That is why he is fitting to be honored because, most likely, it is a commemoration of someone very dear to us.” Legaspi gave credit to Basa, Cordova and the College of Education for adapting and enhancing the program with the Parade of Lights and for the well-attended event. When asked about the audience’s reception to the message the program wishes to convey, Legaspi said, “I think, considering the students who watched, I hope it stayed in their hearts on how other places celebrate Christmas.”

When a matter of sacrifice and discipline means gaining or losing everything you’ve worked hard for, you aim for the best and give it your all, without any hesitations and without any compromise. You develop a drive for excellence and a hunger for success. and, when it comes to passion, commitment, and hard work with the fire to be the best, no one truly beats the student athletes of uno-R. oVeRcominG obSTacleS “i don’t stop when i’m tired. i stop when i’m done,” thus shared alexis a. Joqueňo, a bS education, mapeH major and a rookie student athlete of the university in athletics. alexis was a graduate of Ramonito p. maravilla national High School, where his skills were developed and perfected, before being scouted and enrolled as an athlete of the university. He discovered his potentials from a very young age and won competitions against other schools and other promising athletes since third grade. He played in his first palarong pambansa game during his sixth grade, where he seized third place in track and field. He was able to qualify for the national level of competition again for three consecutive years since his second year in high school where he won one silver, and two gold medals respectively within the three-year span. “i broke the 2002 long-standing record of 190 centimeters for the high jump competition. it was 2014 when i broke the record with 192 centimeters. a year later, i broke my own record with 195 centimeters,” he claimed emphasizing his abilities to have improved with proper training and being able to qualify as a member of the philippine team for consecutive years. “it can be very difficult to be a student athlete, sometimes you can’t just think all about sports especially when you also have to study. everything should be balanced,” he quipped, denoting his sense of obligation for academics despite having to juggle his time between practice, school and everything else in between. “i’m just doing average in my academics, but at least i give my best to avoid having to compromise my responsibilities,” he said further. Having to work twice as hard to accomplish twice as much work, alexis highlighted that it was all a matter of putting priorities in check, and managing time instead of carelessly sacrificing one of his passions for the sake of the other. He told, “i have been an athlete ever since my brother introduced me to sports, but it hasn’t always been a smooth journey. i’ve had many struggles to worry about mostly with my financials. i have problems with my family and i can’t afford to be impractical with spending for my fare. but uno-R has been very supportive to us (student athletes). They have provided us with a dorm for male athletes and an allowance of five hundred pesos every month.” With firm confidence and determination, he said he aims to be champion again this year and take the university with him to the top. “You just have to believe and trust in God

and have faith all the time.” all abouT SacRiFice Seventeen year old Jose Jerry a. belibestre, another bS education, mapeH major and a classmate of alexis, also shared his part of the story as a student athlete in the university. He also finished his high school in Ramonito p. maravilla national High School and is also among the top caliber in athletics for track and field in jumping events. He started his involvement with sports when he was in grade five and has been working and reaching his way to the top since then. He has also been a member of the philippine team for a number of consecutive years. His recent achievement was winning a silver medal for the country at the Junior World championship in Qatar last year in long jump, supposedly qualifying him for the iaaF (international association of athletics Federation) World Youth Games in colombia last July, which he failed to participate in due to complications with his requirements to travel. “We have sacrificed a lot,” He squarely said pointing out that would take serious discipline and commitment if you really want to be in the varsity team. He remarked how tiring it is to be an athlete and how tiring it is to be a student, and how being both can be extra exhausting mentally and physically. “i have to prioritize my studies since i’m already in college, but that doesn’t mean that i go slacking with my training and practice. i still give my best and attend my practice sessions. i have to maintain balance between both,” he said, underlining that being an athlete isn’t a hindrance to become a responsible student or to have good academic performance. “The university has been very supportive so far. i’m happy that this is the school i got into for college. my coach in high school, coach miguel, has been a friend of our current coach here. it was almost a certainty in high school that i would be enrolled here in uno-R and i have been happy with that decision so far,” he told further. “my motivation comes from God and my family of course. i also have a lot to thank my high school coach for. He saw my potential and really encouraged me to try engaging in sports even though i lacked experience and confidence back then. and now it led me here,” he described , telling about his beginnings and what has kept him going despite of the hurdles he had to pass. “i would train harder and get better and better. Hopefully, we would be the best this coming nopSScea.” beHinD eVeRY aTHleTe “They really are the pride of the university

and pride of the philippines,” erol cosas, the university’s athletics coach for men and women, boldly stated with pride and trust with two of his top-performing players. “i have seven first year athletes from Ramonito p. maravilla national High School, among the older players since the past years. i can really tell that they’re the best. alexis and Jerry are great achievers, record breakers at the palarong pambansa and are both part of the philippine team. last year, they both won in the Junior World championship and grabbed the two silver medals for the country, one in 400-meter hurdles for alexis and in long jump for Jerry. it’s just a shame that they didn’t participate in the next level of competition, but both of them are more qualified to compete with the best athletes inside and outside the country,” coach erol shared, beaming with confidence that uno-R athletes can compete and emerge victorious among the best. “They practice every day during the afternoons. Their training includes drills and workouts, conditioning exercises every mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and weight training every Tuesdays and Thursdays. They also have additional training on the weekends. it’s a very tiring routine and occasionally harsh for students but they have their responsibility to practice and be of top shape as members of the varsity team,” he added, agreeing with the fact that balancing practice and studies takes a big toll on the players. “They participate monthly in paTaFa (philippine amateur Track and Field association) and compete against five to six schools. They win every time,” he shared further. He also gave his comment about the struggles that most of the players have to endure, which are mostly financial in nature and family-related. “The school does its part to somehow help them in terms of financial support. They’re given a monthly allowance and free housing for male athletes, plus they’re also given rice allowance at least. Sometimes, i provide them with the groceries. Some of our athletes here are really financially-challenged. it’s a good thing that they are receiving support from the school and that since most of them are from public schools, they’re quite satisfied with the living conditions here,” he imparted, stating that aside from the school training pressure the athletes have to go through, they also have to cope with real life challenges. “They really have the potential to be the best. i really believe in them, no matter how hard the training they might take. With this set of athletes, uno-R will surely reach the top when it comes to sports.”

So, it had been proven. China’s rivalry against the Philippines runs much deeper than territorial dispute. The intense tug-of-war over the prized South Philippine Sea islands is not enough for the domineering Chinese. Threatening the Philippine Navy, terrorizing Filipino communities, and disregarding established international laws also seem inadequate. They are as hungry on basketball courts as they are on geographical boundaries. Last October 3, the Chinese national basketball team managed to pluck the coveted 2015 FIBA Asia golden trophy with a 13-point lead over the Philippine represent, Gilas Pilipinas, in the heated championship match in Changsha, China. With the said victory, the winning team got a spot in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Now, as Gilas fell one game short before the Olympic ticket, they would have to undergo the tougher FIBA qualifying tournaments. Bitterness aside, the Chinesetrimmed road to Rio deserves a celebration. However, a few oddities before and during the said game deserve an explanation as well. Why was the Philippines vs Japan match delayed later than what was scheduled causing less preparation time for the Gilas for the awaited Philippines vs China match after? Had it been plain misfortune that the electric bus set to drop the Philippine Team to the venue on finals night encounter a mechanical malfunction on the way? Why were some of the assistant coaches of the Gilas deprived of tickets for the match? Had it been just mere timing that the net on Gilas’s side of the court be fixed minutes before the onslaught when they should already be practicing? Was it customary for the hostile audience to applaud every missed shot by competitors visiting their home court? And of course, what was up with the thin non-calls by the game refs who seemed to demonstrate their seamless teamwork with the Chinese five? Perhaps, it is indeed true. rivalry against the China’s Philippines digs much deeper than territorial dispute. It seems like the

domineering Chinese do not think twice in putting up a questionable, if not dirty, fight on intense tugsof-war over prized basketball cup trophies. But then, if one would truly take a closer look, the performance of the Gilas had not been as exemplary as their previous performances in the series. Also, the sheer brawniness of the Chinese players have to count against our out-sized players. On top of that, one could not deny the superb shooting of the opponents that left a disheartened Gilas at their wake. Yes, this is not what the Philippine team hoped for. If they won, they would’ve been happy. Because they didn’t, they are now wiser. Chances are, the team already knows the departments to work on so that the moment they enter the Olympic qualifying tournaments, they would unleash a tougher, more resilient, and fiercer Gilas Pilipinas. So, to all Filipinos out there, let’s continue supporting our squad all the way through. Keep the faith. Laban Pilipinas!

Rams volleybelles regain NOPSSCEA champ title by JeSSan cabunSol

It took them so long.

UNO-R Rams women’s volleyball team dethroned University of St. La Salle (USLS) lady spikers as the reigning champion of the Negros Occidental Schools Sports Cultural Educational Association (NOPSSCEA) Women Volleyball for 18 years. “The last time UNO-R Lady Rams won the NOPSSCEA Volleyball championship was more than 18 years ago and West Negros College was the leading team,” said Lycca Maxine Yu, assistant coach of the Rams volleyball team. Lady Rams lambasted the University of Saint La Salle lady spikers, the champion last year, by winning straight sets - 27-25, 25-14, and 25-18. Yu said that capturing this year’s championship title is a fulfillment and that endeavor and hard work have paid off. “I am pleasured and honored because our batch succeeded in getting the victory,” said Team Captain

Erjane Magdato, adding that the Rams waited for several years. “Our effort, hard work, and sacrifices are all worth it,” Magdato said. The Rams lady spikers will represent Negros Occidental to the Western Visayas Private Schools Athletic Association (WVPRISAA) together with the selected players – five from USLS and two from Colegio de San Agustin – Bacolod on January 2016. Yu said that the three schools are collaborating to prepare the women’s volleyball team for the upcoming WVPRISSA. “Our goal is to make this year’s victory before the Negros Island Region will come apart from the regional meet (WVPRISAA) next year,” she added. The Rams are practicing during their free time together with the selected spikers from other schools to synchronize their strategies. Team Captain Magdato’s aim is for their league to clinch the

championship title this year. “We are preparing both for the NOPSSCEA beach volleyball and WVPRISAA indoor game next year. Our aim is to win for us to gain more exposure,” Magdato said. She said that she is grateful for the support and effort of her teammates for their achievements. “Please continue doing your responsibility as players and as teammates.” She offered her thanks to coach Delmo, adding, “Keep it up, and have more patience in leading us during every game despite the tiredness and pressures to the team.” “Good luck to the team. I know that they [the volleybelles] are capable of becoming this year’s regional champions through their hard work and passion in the games,” said Yu, adding that she and her Co-assistant Coach Mark Danoy are thankful to Head Coach Jason Delmo, Sports Director Ericson Rios, and VP- Student Welfare Rev. Fr. Louie Gabinete for the support given to them.

Team ‘Padres’ dumps Team ‘Faculty’, 86-62 by DANielle FrANCis OlseN

The Order of Augustinian Recollect (OAR) priests secured their fourth consecutive victory against University faculty members during the annual Basketball De Nikolas at the University Covered Court, Sept. 10. The first quarter was dominated by team ‘Padres’ with the first points bagged by Rev. Fr. Louie Gabinete, OAR, through a three-point shot despite a close man-to-man defensive play of team faculty. This was quickly retaliated by College of Engineering (CEN) Dean Christopher Taclobos with a lay-up shot, earning their first two points. The first ten minutes of the game ended with a 26 -14 score, in favor of the Padres. Team faculty struggled to overtake during the second quarter with an increase of game

pace and a more aggressive offense play, but failed to pass the lead with the score 52-33, still in favor of the Padres. The third quarter finished at 7147, the Padres leading, continuing to control the tempo of the game with strong team and individual plays, and finally sealing the fourth quarter with a final score of 86-62. Seizing a total of thirty-five points, Rev. Fr. Palagtiosa, OAR, earned the most points during the game. “The game was, in three words, fun, fun, and fun. Since there wasn’t really something big at stake, it was all fun. Through the activity, we continue to love the game and the members of the UNO-R community and learn more about the game of basketball,” said Herminio Tolentino, CEN faculty member. “This helps us, priests, embrace

camaraderie, bonding, being together, and being with the people. It’s not everyday that people get to see priests play basketball and we also get to have a Christian interaction with the faculty and with the people,” said Rev. Fr. Gabinete, OAR. He added that the activity also promotes learning through human interaction and upholds the values of patience, understanding, and consideration of each other’s opponents. “In basketball, you learn to love your teammates and you also learn from the other team. There is learning in winning and in losing,” remarked Rev. Fr. Glynn Ortega, OAR, claiming that team ‘Padres’ is also looking forward to next year’s match up.
