Slithering the platform arrayed in syringes and masks as a symbol of their department, second-year Niecar Acebedo from the College of Allied Medical Health Sciences (CAMHS) clinched the title as the first ever champion of the ‘AmbassaCourse Model’ held at the University Auditorium, Nov. 16.

First-year nursing student Jhanber Gonzales, one of the designers of the CAMHS’ winning costume shared his experiences and inspirations for helping in bringing the costume into reality.

“My passion for designing [drove] me to create the costume, representing the CAMHS department [was] my inspiration,” Gonzales expressed.

Along with Gonzales, allied medical health students Shanly Yanna Granada and Myla Caro planned and made the CAMHS-facade concept costume.

With the help of Acebedo as the college’s model, the costume was brought to stage and was recognized.

Tolentine Star launches pioneer art competition

A total of 23 participants embarked on Tolentine Star’s drawing contest with the theme, ‘Inked: Through the Monochrome Psyche’ as they freely conveyed their thoughts through artistry using different hues of black and white in depicting mental health stigma at the Fr. Cuenca Hall, Nov. 16.

“This event was made to be an avenue for artists to represent and express themselves through art and imagery, like [what] writers do through words,” Tolentine Star member and Project Lead Kristoffer Flores said.

Flores also shared that the theme was inspired by struggles occurring for almost three years after the pandemic. This reflects the artists’ state of mind and how they made

The event was initiated by the UNO-R Supreme Student Government (UNORSSGO) Department of Academics.

Certificates were handed to the participants upon submission of their entries.

CMO, SHS sponsor mass christening

In accordance with the University Week Celebration, 8 infants were welcomed to the Christian world in a mass christening spearheaded by the Campus Ministry Office (CMO), officiated by Rev. Fr. Amadeo Lucero, OAR at the Oratory of St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Nov. 16.

“This [christening] is one of the main programs offered by the CMO. We then collaborate with other departments just like the University Community Development Office (UCDO) and Senior High School (SHS) to give them the chance to be a part of the Lord’s mission too,” CMO employee Marfe Adolfo said.

The participation of all CMO staff aided to the success of the event.

In addition, Fr. Lucero weighed heavily on the parents and the godparents’ responsibilities in their infant’s life during the homily.

“You have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so, you

are accepting the responsibility of training them in the place of faith,” Fr. Lucero emphasized.

Moreover, the beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the sponsors and the program.

“It’s really a big privilege for us parents to be a part of this program because everything [has been given] for free, from the ceremony [up until] the reception,” one of the parents, Rhea Khubchand shared.

Khubchand shared that her niece, who attends the university, was the one who informed her of the program which she did not hesitate to accept.

The CMO collaborated with the UCDO and the SHS Department to make the event possible.

Furthermore, the families can pick up their infants’ baptismal certificates at the San Antonio Abad Parish Church.

CE studs finish two-day seminar series

Exploring new scopes in their specialization, fourthyear Civil Engineering (CE) students majoring in Structural Engineering continued their seminar series facilitated by the Association of Civil Engineering Students (ACES) at the AVR Engineering, Nov. 16.

Participated by 125 students, the two-session seminar highlighted lectures on the “Structural Analysis and Design of Low-Rise RC Building: Using STAAD.Pro Connect” in the morning and “Sanitary and Plumbing System Design” in the afternoon.

“[The seminars serve] as a window to the construction industry so that the students can be exposed and introduced to the actual practices because they will be the future civil engineers produced by the

university,” CE Program Head, Engr. Stephen Ryan Sedel, CE, MEngCE, said.

In addition, the resource speakers of the two sessions were Engr. Charlene Grace Gelotin, CE and Engr. John Paul Silva, CE respectively.

“I am grateful that we have Engr. Gelotin as our speaker because we learned things not usually discussed in the classroom and as a student, I already have an idea of what our future working environment will be,” fourth-year CE student Vencel Najarro said.

Furthermore, the first day of the two-day seminar was held at the High School Academic Cultural Center during the morning and at Little Theater in the afternoon last Nov. 15.

COED conquers intercollegiate quizbowl

Outwitting the other five colleges, the College of Education (COED) garnered 76 points in all three rounds of the Dunong: Intercollegiate Quizbowl headed by the University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos Supreme Student Government (UNORSSGO) held at the Fr. Cuenca Hall, Nov. 16.

“Although my partner and I are busy organizing each of our respective booths, we utilized our free time in reviewing and memorizing the names and faces of the board of trustees, from the administration board [up] until the deans of each college,” fourth-year General Education Major and one of the winners, JR Gemarino shared.

Alongside Gemarino is fourthyear Mathematics Major Jhermaine Marielle Beldua, who also imparted that confidence and mastery

brought the COED team to the edge of their success.

The first and second runnersup of the event were the College of Allied Medical Health Sciences with 72 points and the College of Arts and Sciences with 62 points, respectively.

“Our team showed dedication towards their duties and responsibilities while actualizing the goal to surpass this event with successful outcomes despite the struggles we have encountered,” UNORSSGO Department Secretary for Interior Jel Marianne Tingson said.

Futhermore, each college will earn respective perpetual points during the University Week celebration’s closing ceremony on Nov. 19.

UNO-RHYTHM calls for alumni for Open Mic performance

Construction mgmt majors finishes two-day seminar

Refining and enhancing their background in Construction Management, a total of 140 fourth-year Civil Engineering students gathered for the day two session of seminars, accen tuating topics related to their course subject at the Presi dent’s Hall, Nov. 16.

The second day of the seminar is also divided into two sessions with different topics entitled ‘Bridge Construction Methods of Prestressed Concrete Girder’ scheduled in the morning and ‘Water Resources Engineering: National Irrigation Administra tion’ scheduled in the afternoon.

“During site work, carrying the learnings [that you have ob tained] during the seminar, you can familiarize bridge parts, pur poses, and methods which will be used as a reference during con struction and decision making,” first session’s speaker Engr. Alain Aujero, CE, MEE shared.

In addition, the Philippine In stitute of Civil Engineers – Stu dent Chapter President Angel Lou Bidavid shared her insight regarding the significance of the

seminar, especially to her as a graduating student.

“This is important for the stu dents since they will learn a lot knowing that their major is con struction engineering, and just like the speaker said, they must know the theories for them to use [it] in the future,” Bidavid shared.

Civil Engineering program head, Engr. Stephen Ryan Sedel, CE, MEngCE highlighted the success of the two-day seminar facilitat ed by different organizations, namely, the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers – Student Chap ter (PICE-SC) and the Association of Civil Engineering Students (ACES).

“I think it is a successful one since we started yesterday, all speakers [were] present, and most of the students attended the seminar, attaining our goals and expectations,” Engr. Sedel shared.

The two-day seminar aims to ex pand the students’ perspectives and expose them to their future work in their respective fields as early as possible.

Myriad chords and voices re verberated during the ‘Open Mic’ event spearheaded by UNO-RHYTHM, where 12 bands performed on stage at the Park 1606, Nov. 16.

“[The] main objective of this event is for UNO-Rian alumni and out siders to exhibit their talents and present their advocacies through music,” UNO-RHYTHM President Catherine Niedes said.

In addition, Niedes also empha sized that this event is a medium for expressing the performers’ per sonalities.

“It is our first time showcasing our talents, seen by the crowd, and we did it vehemently. Kudos to UNO-RHYTHM,” vocalist of Golden field Warriors, one of the perform

ers, Joe Arnel Paderog, shared. Paderog also added that he is very thankful that UNORHYTHM has made a platform where alumni and outsiders can display their love for music, in the university.

‘Open mic’ is an annual-formal event by UNO-RHYTHM carried out every University week. It is a spectacle of presenting and em bracing the evolution of music and the restoration of old ones.

Each band is given a 30-min ute expo to present their perfor mances and chosen genres. The event is an avenue as well as to promote their local bands.

Furthermore, the event will be an outlet for performances for the whole University week.

Griffins take on a seminar challenge

Third and fourth-year CABACS students took part in a seminar that tackled employment preparation spearheaded by the CABACS Student Council, at the Little Theater, Nov. 16.

During the seminar, main speaker Dr. Ariel Toriales shared that one of the key skills for employers for entry level jobs was professionalism which demonstrates responsibility and the ability of managing projects well.

“As an Human Resource worker, doing a good resume and application would warrant good points to the employer,” Toriales stated.

CABACS Student Council Deputy Secretary Nicole Almaiz stated that one of the objectives of the activity was to prepare the students for the

world of work after they graduated. Almaiz also shared her hopes that students will know what to expect regarding job employment.

“I feel proud of myself and also to my fellow councils that we were able to finish it on time and become successful despite the problems we [had] encountered during the preparation,” Almaiz stated.

With its theme ‘Employment Preparation: Getting Ready for the World of Work,’ an estimated number of 220 griffins were present during the seminar.

Furthermore, an open forum was conducted after the seminar encouraging students to express their thoughts and ask questions for clarifications.

AYV-R conducts basic first aid assessment

To intensify first-aid service, the Amity Youth VolunteersRecoletos (AYVR) displayed vigilance and promptness as they responded to schoolbased emergency situations in this year’s Respolympics during the University Week celebration at the University Grounds, Nov. 16.

“The purpose of this event [Respolympics] is to showcase the knowledge and skills of our volunteers,” AYVR President Shanna Mae Castro said.

In addition, Castro shared that, after two years of online lectures,

the Respolympics served as a test and assessment of the AYVR volunteers.

“This activity will serve as an application of what they have learned for the past trainings,” Castro added. Bandaging, and transporting the victim were some of the basic first-aid procedures demonstrated during the event.

Furthermore, this event is to emphasize the spirit of volunteerism and the readiness to serve and help.

HM studs clash in HATS skills day

Vied in a one-on-one drink mixing contest, hospitality management students flaunted their expertise and skills in the craft as part of the Hospitality and Tourism Society (HATS) Skills Day at the University HM Laboratory, Nov.16.

The competition was between second-year student Christyn Villaruz and thirdyear student Daniel Paderna.

“This event is intended to highlight their talents and enhance their confidence,” HATS President Ma. Prece Decena said.

Moreover, Decena stressed the value of exhibiting their expertise in their field amid a two-year pandemic.

“Now that we are having face-to-face classes, it is now their [students] chance to execute their [hidden] skills,” Decena added.

Furthermore, the event will resume on Nov. 17 with additional activities such as master chef, fruit carving, and a quiz bee at the HM Laboratory.

The event’s winners will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 17.

UNO-RHYTHM holds religious concert

Hymns of praise and worship filled the air as students, facul ty, and alumni participated in a concert facilitated by the UNORHYTHM held at the Park 1606, Nov. 16.

“This event is really heartwarm ing because I can really feel the positiveness in the atmosphere,” third-year Accountancy student Arianne Villanueva said.

Everyone sang with their hearts as their favorite worship songs

were played by the bands invited by UNO-RHYTHM.

“Most of the students are drained in their academics and somehow this kind of event helped us [stu dents] release our stress,” fourthyear Pharmacy student Jeff Bryan Encoy, who also attended the con cert, said.

Furthermore, Encoy also shared that, students have a difficult time taking care of their health nowa days, and the impact of music in one’s life is powerful.

JPIChE organizes seminar on food safety

A total of 60 chemical engi neering students from UNO-R and USLS convened during the seminar organized by the Junior Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (JIPChE) to raise awareness about food safety, at the University Little Theater, Nov. 16.

Resource Speaker Engr. Bene dict Salazar, ChE, MEnE empha sized the roles of a chemical en gineer in food safety.

“When it comes to food safety, it is very important, because we need to ensure the control of hazards from food handlers and work environment,” Engr. Sala

Down the Rabbit Hole

Compared to my Senior High School experience, the current U-Week is much better given the fact that there was a pandemic, and it is utterly a reminiscence to enjoy U-Week even though this is my last two years in UNO-R.

My first and second days have been fun and exciting because I had the opportunity to compete in a cheerdance competition and open an exhibit booth.

U-Week has been fun and exciting because after two years, we have experienced this kind of event to the point that my emotions and feelings are overflowing.

This is my first time experiencing U-Week, so I feel thrilled and excited mainly because I am with my friends.

Comm Arts studs gets into character

Channeling their inner actors and actresses, students of the College of Arts and Sciences, Bachelor of Arts and Communications presented their SDrama Performance Event at the University Park, Nov. 16.

“This is my first time seeing a show like this, as it is very surprising for us, since their confidence with their performance were interesting and inspirational,” Grade 9 students Avrylle Denise Jamero and Jasmine Louise Eran, who

were part of the audience and witnessed the drama, said.

Moreover, the performances and production design serve as a fulfillment to the mid-term examinations of second-year students of the Bachelor of Arts and Communication.

Furthermore, this event encouraged the audiences’ participation and engagementone important essence of U-Week 2022.

Right now, I feel overwhelmed and I am grateful because through this event I can see my friends smile making me feel contented.
