Off to Space: Counternarrating the Cosmos

Today’s environmental, political and economic crisis alongside the anxiousness about tomorrow and cross-planetary colonial ambitions instigate a new spiral turn of the space race that now includes both states and private corporations who fight for limited lunar resources. Even though the contemporary world is far from being dual, in the context of failing democracy, growing nationalism, and overall political throwback revisiting the politics of the Cold War era could be helpful for reassessing the current moment of confusion and political apathy while also contemplating potentialities of the future(s) in view of the developing totalitarian agenda in former socialist states and beyond.

“Off to Space: Countenarrating the Cosmos” brings together works by six international artists and collectives who integrate underrepresented narratives and practices of post-memory into contemporary political contexts and processes. The platform for such excavation of difficult knowledge, repressed memories and forgotten scenarios of the already cancelled future is space exploration strategies that started in the 20th century as attempts to widen geopolitical influence, accumulate power and make utopias possible.

a variety of counter-futurisms and temporalities and offers artistic ways of representing displaced stories and reclaiming the past and the future.

Addressing events set in the past, the artists reflect upon current issues including growing antisemitism and new strategies of exile, feminist movements, economic segregation, and growing inequality. Showing space exploration from positions of ethnic minorities, women, animals, small communities, and dependent economies, the works at the exhibition disclose the cost of technological development and progress that largely contributed to contemporary environmental and political cataclysm but was never a part of the official space discourse cherished by the governments as the symbol of national power. Including counter-histories and counter-

futurisms in the realm of shared public knowledge, the artists bring back displaced identities and articulate cases of voice dispossession thus bringing historical justice to silenced communities and individuals.

The Soviet history of space exploration always served as a powerful tool for propaganda and has been actively used by the state to form a national identity. The formal historical narrative about space, as well as the policy of choosing heroes who would embody the space achievements of the USSR, were constructed in accordance with current ideological discourse. Yiddish Cosmos by Yevgeniy Fiks offers an alternative, subaltern look at the Soviet space conquest from the perspective of Soviet Jewish experience. The project creates a futuristic narrative where the ideas of technological development merge with the principles of Yiddish culture and reinterpretation of the figure of a Soviet refusenik (a term marking Soviet Jews who were denied the right to emigrate from the USSR) and the struggle for liberty of movement in the years of state antisemitism. Yiddish Cosmos draws from the stories of three people. Panarchist Volf Gordin was a theorist of the space universal language AO, a utopian linguistic project that arose on the wave of postrevolutionary enthusiasm of the 1920s, but never received development. Ari Sternfeld, who came to the USSR from Poland and was one of the founding fathers of the Soviet cosmonautics and coined the term, was prohibited to work officially as a space scientist in 1937 and never gained reputation in the USSR. The cosmonaut Boris Volynov was the first Halachic Jew in space in 1969, who could have been the first man in space had it not been for his Jewish origin. Combining space-related facts with elements of Yiddish culture and tradition, the project speculates the idea that the Soviet Cosmos became the epitome of the Soviet Homeland for Soviet Jews, and therefore, defines the Soviet Jewish narrative as one of longing for scientific progress as a “homeland” that embraces them. In the Soviet and Russian public consciousness and ideological paradigm, national space exploration has always relied on the names of Russian researchers and spacemen, while Jews have hardly been mentioned. Based on micro-historical narratives and personal stories, Yiddish Cosmos helps forming a more comprehensive and detailed picture of the Soviet (Jewish) past, decolonizing history and narrating the Soviet Space Program from an ‘unwanted ethnicity’ point of view. The chronological timeline juxtaposing the stages of development of the Soviet space program with the phases of the state antisemitism and people’s struggle against it can be seen as a tool to fight collective amnesia

that takes different forms depending on the context where it is shown - in Russia, the USA, or Israel.

Similarly, space was much less accessible for people of color in the US as it was closed for representatives of certain nationalities in the USSR, and NASA was harshly criticized by Black communities for absence of diversity in their astronauts, and the controversial resignation of Ed Dwight, a Black astronaut a few years before the moon landing. Envisioning tools needed to create liberatory Afro-future(s) is at the core of the project Black Space Agency of the artist duo from Philadelphia Black Quantum Futurism.

The project, initially created with and for communities in Philadelphia, addressed issues of affordable and fair housing, displacement/space/land grabs, redlining, eminent domain, and gentrification through the lens of Afrofuturism, oral histories/futures, and Black spatial-temporal autonomy.

As a point of departure Black Quantum Futurism use the resistance of the Black Community in North Philly during the 1960’s against the space race.

Moon landing and other expensive NASA programs were condemned by the Black communities because of ignoring the lack of affordable housing and growing poverty. Black Space Agency focuses on the story of Rev. Leon H. Sullivan, a civil rights leader and minister at Philadelphia’s Zion Baptist Church, who established Progress Aerospace Enterprises (PAE), one of the first Black-owned aerospace companies. PAE had strong connections to the Civil Rights and Black liberation movements, affordable housing, economic stability, passage of the Fair Housing Act, and the space race. In response to the critique on the part of the Black liberation movement, NASA became briefly involved in the design and applicability of spaceship materials in “urban” and government-subsidized housing. Much of this Black resistance and involvement has been erased from the popular memory. liberation, and the fight for space and time in Black communities.

The gender prism for discussing space exploration appears in new work Zero Gravity — Nostalgia for Earth by Andréa Stanislav. For years, the dominating perspective on space exploration has been based on the achievements of men, while the legacy of female astronauts and researchers and the impact it has had on the environmental, political, and social climate

in historical perspective and contemporary context has been diminished and mostly known through the first woman in space Valentina Tereshkova.

While mining the controversial history of female contributions throughout space race in the 20th century Stanislav undertook a research on space exploration at the Moscow Museum of Cosmonautics, where she explored the zero gravity designs of the Soyuz, MIR spacecraft, and International Space Station by the Soviet Space Program architect Galina Balashova.

The video location setting is a space capsule orbiting Mars, partially shot in actual Soyuz capsules designed in the 1970s by Balashova, whose name became widely known only in 2000 after the first exhibition of her works in Moscow. Andréa’s gravitating camera seamlessly floats from one context to another accompanied by the famous Soviet song “Nadezhda” (in Russian it is a female name, which also means ‘hope’) that is known to be a sonic talisman of the Soviet cosmonauts. The ideas of the Russian Cosmism about the advancement of humankind towards natural space colonization, cosmic rebirth, and the preservation of Earth’s nature in space are woven through Stanislav’s collaged images and actions, serving as a mystic and utopic binder.

Masha Godovannaya touches upon the first explorers of space and the lives that were sacrificed in the early stages of space research from the perspective of animal rights. Laika was the first dog which was successfully sent to the Earth’s orbit by Russians. One of the many Soviet space-dogs, the first cosmonauts, who paid with their lives for men’s conquering space. This film Laika. The Last Flight is a letter from the dead dog. Her haunted spirit re-tells the story of her heroic deeds and martyrdom. The letter is not a call for a revenge or restitution, it’s rather a document of a life, one of many lives that have been considered “disposable” and “killable” by the well-known human strategies of conquest and domination. The work can also be viewed as a reference to the systematic Stalinist repressions against scientists and researchers who were put to the numerous Soviet labor camps, from where many of them continued their research and work while imprisoned and tortured. Sergey Korolev, lead Soviet rocket engineer and spacecraft designer who was involved in the launching Laika and the first human being, Yuri Gagarin, into space, also underwent the GULAG from 1930 to 1944 and was fully rehabilitated only in 1957.

Driant Zeneli also addresses the aftermath of the toxic communist legacy,

catastrophe that it had provoked in his video work It would not be possible to leave the planet Earth unless gravity existed. In the center of the work is the Metalurgjiku plant built by the Chinese in the 1960-1970s, when the Communist China was compensating Albania for the loss of Soviet economic support after the Soviet-Albanian split. Metalurgjiku processed the heavy metals that supplied the whole Albanian industry, and occupied the territory of around 250 thousand hectares, where 12 thousand people used to work during the 70’s. The city of Elbasan, where the plant was located, had become

a heavily polluted city. Diseases, cancer, genetic mutations, and intoxicated air have often made the headlines in Albanian media since the early 90s.

In Zeneli’s video Metalurgjiku looks like an industrial archaeological site or a futuristic Sci-Fi city after an apocalypse, where the protagonist, Mario, is looking for a possibility to escape to the outer space from the industrial and political ruins of the site that used to represent a utopian communist Albanian society and a megalomanic economic dream.

Aspirations and dreams about space are central to the short film by Axel Straschnoy, who, narrating the story of the Finnish Astronautical Society, explores the Finnish futurism and the futuristic ambitions of the post-war Finland. Geographically and politically, Finland has always been feeling the pressure both from the East and the West and this tension still remains especially after 2014 and the wave of US and EU sanctions on Russia.

However, after the Cold War was over, the work of the society started to shrink and its ambition to participate in the global space exploration program eventually reduced to a male hobby: some type of a club for men for building and launching model rockets every now and then. Having become a member of the society, Straschnoy observes the contemporary routine and rituals of rocket models launching in which he also occasionally participates. The film documenting these rituals and the life of the Finnish Astronautical Society today marks its 60s anniversary since it was founded by enthusiastic schoolboys who, inspired by the space race, set out to build the country’s first rocket.

Maria Veits

Andréa Stanislav is based in New York City, USA, and works in St. Petersburg, RU and Bloomington, IN. Her hybrid practice spans sculpture, video, multimedia installation, and public art. Her work has been exhibited internationally at museums, contemporary art centers, galleries, biennials, site-specific public locations and art fairs.

Axel Straschnoy is a visual artist born in Buenos Aires, based in Helsinki. His long-term and research focused projects include Kilpisjärvellä (2011-12) a planetarium film on exploration in northern Lapland under the Northern Lights (Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Mirta Demare Gallery, Rotterdam), La Figure de la Terre (2014) a short film based on the book The Figure of the Earth by 18th century French mathematician and explorer Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis (Galería del Infinito, Buenos Aires; Museo del Cine, Buenos Aires), and the lecture-performance series, Notes on the Double Agent (2013-ongoing).

Yevgeniy Fiks is a multidisciplinary, conceptual artist born in Moscow and based in New York City since 1994. His medium includes painting, drawing, performance, and book arts. Fiks defines himself as “the Post-Soviet artist», one who has the responsibility to raise the proper understanding and critical reflection of Soviet history in order for Post-Soviet societies to move forward. His works explore the dialectic between Communismand “the West” and are based on historical research, usually of forgotten and unresolved Cold War narratives.

Driant Zeneli lives between Milan and Tirana. He represented Albanian Pavilion at the 58th International Art Exhibition – Venice Biennale, 2019. In 2017 he won the MOROSO Prize and in 2009 the Young European Artist Award Trieste Contemporanea. He was the artistic director of Mediterranea 18, the Young Artists Biennale from Europe and Mediterranean, taking place for the first time in 2017 between Tirana and Durres.He is co-founder of Harabel Contemporary Art Platform, Tirana.

Masha Godovannaya is a visual artist, experimental film maker and queer-feminist researcher, born in Moscow, Russia. Approaching art production as artistic research and collective action, Masha’s artistic practice draws on combinations of approaches and spheres such as moving image theory, experimental cinema and DIY video tradition, social science, queer theory, decolonial methodologies, and contemporary art.

Black Quantum Futurism Collective is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Camae Ayewa (Rockers!; Moor Mother) and Rasheedah Phillips (The AfroFuturist Affair; Metropolarity) exploring the intersections of futurism, creative media, DIY-aesthetics, and activism in marginalized communities through an alternative temporal lens. Through various writing, music, film, visual art, and creative research projects, BQF Collective also explores personal, cultural, familial, and communal cycles of experience, and solutions for transforming negative cycles into positive ones using artistic and wholistic methods of healing. Through the work of BQF Collective and its collaborators, we are in the process of developing and enacting a new spatio-temporal consciousness.

Maria Veits is an independent curator and researcher. She is a co-founder and curator of TOK, an art organization and a female curatorial collective in St Petersburg that investigates global and local sociopolitical processes and contexts. Maria’s curatorial practice spans across working in different geographies, both in public spaces and in collaboration with a variety of art institutions. She has curated exhibitions, residencies, symposiums, conferences, and publications. Her current curatorial interests include contested and silenced historical narratives connected with potentialities of the futures, alternative scenarios of the past and their dependence on current political processes. In her projects she also addresses reconceptualization of citizenship, migration and national borders.

‫הסובייטי‪-‬אלבני‪ .‬המתכות הכבדות שעובדו במטאלורוגייקו‪ ,‬סופקו לכל התעשייה האלבנית‪.‬‬ ‫הכור עצמו השתרע על פני שטח של ‪ 2,500‬קמ״ר ובשנות ה‪ 70-‬עבדו בו כ‪ 12-‬אלף איש‪ .‬אלבסן‪,‬‬ ‫עיר משכנו של הכור‪ ,‬החלה לסבול מרמה גובהה של זיהום‪ ,‬ומתחילת שנות ה‪ 90-‬החלו מחלות‪,‬‬ ‫סרטן‪ ,‬מוטציות גנטיות ואוויר מורעל לעלות לכותרות באלבניה‪ .‬בווידיאו של זנלי‪ ,‬מטאלורוגייקו‬ ‫נראה כמו אתר תעשייתי ארכיאולוגי‪ ,‬או כמו עיר מדע‪-‬בדיוני פוטוריסטית פוסט‪-‬אפוקליפטית‪,‬‬ ‫שבה הגיבור‪ ,‬מריו‪ ,‬מחפש אפשרות לברוח לחלל החיצון מחורבותיו התעשייתיות והפוליטיות‬ ‫של האתר שהיה בעבר סמל לחברה אלבנית קומוניסטית אוטופית ולחלום כלכלי מגלומאני‪.‬‬ ‫סרטו של אקסל סטרצ׳נוי עוסק בשאיפות ובחלומות הקשורים בחלל‪ .‬סטרצ׳נוי‪ ,‬שגם מקריין‬ ‫את סיפורה של אגו דת האסטרונאוטי קה הפינית (‪ ,)Finnish Astronautical Society‬חוקר‬ ‫את הפוטוריזם הפיני ואת השאיפות הפוטוריסטיות של פינלנד שאחרי המלחמה‪ .‬מבחינה‬ ‫גיאופוליטית‪ ,‬פינלנד היתה נתונה מאז ומתמיד ללחץ ממזרח וממערב‪ ,‬מתח שמורגש גם‬ ‫כיום‪ ,‬במיוחד משנת ‪ 2014‬בעקבות גל הסנקציות שגזרו ארה״ב והאיחוד האירופאי על רוסיה‪.‬‬ ‫האגודה החלה בפיתוח תכנית החלל הפינית בשנת ‪ ,1959‬כשנה אחרי נאס״א‪ ,‬בתקופה שבה‬ ‫כל מדינה חיפשה דרכים להשתתף בחקר החלל וחקר הטילים עורר עניין צבאי‪ .‬אך עם סיום‬ ‫המלחמה הקרה‪ ,‬היקף עבודתה של האגודה החל להצטמצם ושאיפתה להשתתף בתוכנית‬ ‫חקר החלל העולמית התפוגגה לכדי תחביב גברי‪ :‬מעין מועדון גברים שבו לעיתים בונים‬ ‫ומשגרים דגמי טילים‪ .‬סטרצ׳נוי‪ ,‬שהתקבל כחבר באגודה‪ ,‬בוחן את השגרה באגודה ואת טקסי‬ ‫השיגור של דגמי הטילים‪ ,‬שבהם גם הוא משתתף מדי פעם‪ .‬הסרט מתעד את הטקסים הללו‬ ‫ואת חיי אגודת האסטרונאוטיקה הפינית‪ ,‬ומסמן ‪ 60‬שנה של פעילות מאז שהוקמה בידי נער‬ ‫שבהשראת המרוץ לחלל‪ ,‬יצא לבנות את הטיל הראשון במדינה‪.‬‬ ‫מר יה וייץ‬

‫כיצד הם מעצבים את ההווה ואת העתיד של הדיור בר‪-‬ההשגה‪ ,‬של תנועת השחרור השחורה‬ ‫ושל המאבק למען חופש תנועה בקהילות השחורות‪.‬‬ ‫נקודת המבט המגדרית על הדיון בחקר החלל מופיעה בעבודת הווידיאו החדשה אפס כוח‬ ‫משיכה – געגועים לכדור האר ץ (‪ )Zero Gravity — Nostalgia for Earth‬של אנדריאה‬ ‫סטניסלב‪ .‬במשך שנים‪ ,‬הנרטיב השליט על חקר החלל התמקד בהישגיהם של גברים‪ ,‬בעוד‬ ‫שמפעלן של אסטרונאוטיות ושל מדעניות והשפעתו ההיסטורית על המצב הסביבתי‪ ,‬הפוליטי‬ ‫והחברתי העכשווי צומצמה לכדי אזכור האישה הראשונה בחלל‪ ,‬וולנטינה טרשקובה‪ .‬במסגרת‬ ‫מחקרה על אודות תולדות תרומתן של הנשים למרוץ לחלל במאה ה‪ ,20-‬סטניסלב בחנה‬ ‫את תחום חקר החלל במוזאון מוסקבה לקוסמונאוטיקה‪ .‬שם התמקדה בעיצובים לאפס כוח‬ ‫משיכה שעיצבה האדריכלית גלינה בלשובה לתוכנית החלל הסובייטית‪ ,‬ביניהם החלליות‬ ‫סויוז (‪ )Soyuz‬ומיר (‪ )MIR‬ותחנת החלל הבינלאומית‪ .‬הווידיאו מתרחש בקפסולת‪-‬חלל‬ ‫המקיפה את מאדים והוא צולם בחלקו בקפסולות מקוריות של החללית סויוז שעיצבה בלשובה‬ ‫בשנות ה‪ .70-‬שמה של בלשובה התפרסם רק בשנת אלפיים לאחר שעבודתה הוצגה לראשונה‬ ‫במוסקבה ‪ .2000‬המצלמה בעבודתה של אנדריאה עוברת מנושא אחד למשנהו כשהיא מלווה‬ ‫בצלילי השיר הסובייטי המפורסם “נדז’דה” (שם רוסי לאישה אשר משמעותו ‘תקווה’) ששימש‬ ‫כקמע עבור הקוסמונאוטים הסובייטים‪ .‬התפישות של תכנית החלל הרוסית לגבי התקדמותו‬ ‫הטבעית של האדם לקראת כיבוש החלל‪ ,‬לידתו מחדש של האדם בחלל ושימור הטבע של‬ ‫כדוה״א בחלל‪ ,‬שזורים בין הדימויים והפעולות של סטניסלב כאגד מיסטי ואוטופי‪.‬‬ ‫מאשה גודובנאיה עוסקת במגלי החלל הראשונים ובחייהם שהוקרבו בשלבים המוקדמים של‬ ‫חקר החלל‪ ,‬מנקודת המבט של זכויות בעלי החיים‪ .‬לייקה היתה הכלבה הראשונה שהרוסים‬ ‫שיגרו בהצלחה למסלול לווייני סביב כדור הארץ‪ .‬היא היתה אחת מכלבי‪-‬חלל סובייטים רבים‪,‬‬ ‫הקוסמונאוטים הראשונים‪ ,‬ששלמו בחייהם על כיבוש החלל בידי האדם‪ .‬הסרט לייקה‪ .‬הטיסה‬ ‫האחרונה ( ‪ )Laika. The Last Flight‬הוא מכתב מאת הכלבה המתה‪ .‬נשמתה הרדופה‬ ‫שוטחת את סבלה ואת סיפורה ההרואי‪ .‬המכתב אינו קריאה לנקמה ולפיצוי‪ ,‬אלא תיעוד‬ ‫חייו של פרט אחד מתוך רבים שנתפשו כחסרי חשיבות ובני מיתה במסגרת תכניות הכיבוש‬ ‫והשליטה של האנושות‪ .‬העבודה גם מרמזת על דיכויים השיטתי של מדענים ושל חוקרים בידי‬ ‫הממשל הסטליניסטי שנלקחו לאין ספור מחנות עבודה‪ ,‬שם המשיכו רבים את עבודתם גם‬ ‫בתנאי כלא ועינויים‪ .‬ב‪ .‬סרגיי קורוליוב‪ ,‬מהנדס אווירונאוטיקה ומעצב החלליות שהיה מעורב‬ ‫בשליחתם של לייקה ושל יורי גגרין‪ ,‬האדם הראשון לחלל‪ ,‬נכלא אף הוא בגולאג‪ ,‬בין השנים‬ ‫‪ ,1944-1930‬ושוחרר באופן מלא רק בשנת ‪.1957‬‬ ‫דריאנט זנלי עוסק אף הוא בתוצאותיה של המורשת הקומוניסטית הרעילה‪ ,‬אך באלבניה‪.‬‬ ‫בעבודת הווידיאו ל א היה אפשר ל עזוב את כדור האר ץ אלמ ל א כוח המשיכה (‪It would not‬‬ ‫‪ )be possible to leave the planet Earth unless gravity existed‬הוא מדמיין עתיד‬ ‫שמגיע בעקבות אסון סביבתי שאלבניה אחראית לו‪ .‬בלב העבודה עומד כור מטאלורגייקו‬ ‫(‪ )Metalurgjiku‬שבנו הסינים בין השנים ‪ ,1970-1960‬כחלק מהפיצויים שסיפקה סין‬ ‫הקומוניסטית לאלבניה לאחר שזו איבדה את התמיכה הכלכלית הסובייטית בעקבות הקרע‬

‫אנשים‪ .‬האנרכיסט וולף גורדין היה הוגה שהמציא בשנות ה‪ 20-‬את שפת החלל האוניברסלית‬ ‫‪ - AO‬פרויקט בלשני אוטופי שמעולם לא התפתח‪ .‬ארי שטרנפלד‪ ,‬שהגיע לבריה״מ מפולין‪,‬‬ ‫היה מהאבות המייסדים של הקוסמונאוטיקה הסובייטית ואף תבע את המונח‪ ,‬אך משנת ‪1937‬‬ ‫נאסר עליו לעבוד רשמית כמדען חלל והוא מעולם לא קנה לעצמו שם בבריה״מ‪ .‬הקוסמונאוט‬ ‫בוריס וולינוב היה היהודי הראשון שהגיע לחלל בשנת ‪ ,1969‬ויכול היה להיות האדם הראשון‬ ‫בחלל אלמלא היה יהודי‪ .‬הפרויקט‪ ,‬שמשלב עובדות על החלל באלמנטים מתרבות וממסורת‬ ‫היידיש‪ ,‬מציע לראות בתכנית החלל הסובייטית את תמצית המולדת הסובייטית עבור יהודי‬ ‫בריה״מ ובכך הוא מגדיר את הנרטיב של יהודי בריה״מ ככמיהה להתפתחות מדעית כסוג של‬ ‫״מולדת״ שמקבלת ומכילה אותם‪ .‬בתודעה ובאידיאולוגיה הסובייטית והרוסית‪ ,‬חקר החלל‬ ‫נשען תמיד על שמות של מדענים ושל אנשי חלל רוסיים‪ ,‬בעוד שהיהודים בקושי מוזכרים‪.‬‬ ‫קוסמוס יי ד י מתבססת על סיפורים אישיים ומסייעת ביצירת תמונה כוללת ומפורטת יותר‬ ‫של העבר ה(יהודי‪)-‬סובייטי‪ .‬היא משחררת את ההיסטוריה ומספרת את סיפורה של תכנית‬ ‫החלל הסובייטית מנקודת מבט של ׳קהילה בלתי‪-‬רצויה׳‪ .‬ציר הזמן הכרונולוגי‪ ,‬שמציג את‬ ‫שלבי התקדמות תכנית החלל הסובייטית לצד השלבים השונים בהתפתחות האנטישמיות‬ ‫הממסדית ובמאבק בה‪ ,‬הוא מעין אמצעי לחימה בשכחה הקולקטיבית‪ ,‬על צורותיה השונות‪,‬‬ ‫ברוסיה‪ ,‬בארה״ב או בישראל‪.‬‬ ‫כשם שהחלל היה פחות נגיש לבני קבוצות לאומיות מסוימות בבריה״מ‪ ,‬כך גם בארה״ב הוא‬ ‫היה פחות נגיש משמעותית למיעוטים אתניים‪ .‬הקהילה השחורה בארה״ב ביקרה בחריפות את‬ ‫נאס״א על חוסר הגיוון האתני של האסטרונאוטים ועל פרישתו מחיל האוויר של האסטרונאוט‬ ‫השחור‪ ,‬אד דווייט‪ ,‬כמה שנים לפני הנחיתה על הירח‪ .‬העבודה סוכנות חל ל שחורה (‪Black‬‬ ‫‪ ,)Space Agency‬של צמד האמנים ‪ Black Quantum Futurism‬מפילדלפיה‪ ,‬מדמה‬ ‫את הכלים הדרושים ליצירת עתיד משחרר לקהילה השחורה‪ .‬הפרויקט‪ ,‬שנוצר עם קהילות‬ ‫שחורות בפילדלפיה ועבורן‪ ,‬עוסק בנושאים כמו דיור הוגן ובר‪-‬השגה‪ ,‬עקירה‪/‬מרחב‪/‬השתלטות‬ ‫על אדמות‪ ,‬מניעת שירותים‪ ,‬הפקעה וג׳נטריפיקציה מפרספקטיבה של פוטוריזם שחור‪ ,‬של‬ ‫היסטוריה‪/‬עתיד שבעל פה ושל חופש התנועה של השחורים‪ .‬נקודת המוצא של ‪Black‬‬ ‫‪ Quantum Futurism‬בהתנגדות הקהילה השחורה בצפון‪-‬פילדלפיה למרוץ לחלל‪ ,‬בשנות‬ ‫ה‪ .60-‬קהילות השחורים הוקיעו את התוכניות היקרות של נאס״א‪ ,‬לרבות תכנית הנחיתה‬ ‫על הירח‪ ,‬בגלל ההתעלמות הממסדית מהמחסור בדיור בר השגה ומהעוני המתפשט‪ .‬סוכנות‬ ‫חל ל שחורה מתמקדת בסיפורו של האב ליאון ס‪ .‬סאליבן‪ ,‬מנהיג זכויות אדם וכומר בכנסיית‬ ‫ציון הבפטיסטית בפילדלפיה‪ ,‬שהקים את ארגון פיתוח החלל (‪Progress Aerospace‬‬ ‫‪ ,)Enterprises - PAE‬אחת מחברות התעופה והחלל הראשונות שהיו בבעלות שחורה‪ .‬לחברת‬ ‫יבגני פיקס‪,‬‬ ‫‪ ,2017‬שלח את‬ ‫עמי‪75 X 50 ,‬‬

‫‪ PAE‬היתה זיקה עמוקה לתנועה לזכויות האזרח ולתנועת השחרור השחורה‪ ,‬לדיור בר‪-‬השגה‪,‬‬ ‫ליציבות כלכלית‪ ,‬להעברת החוק לדיור הוגן ולמרוץ לחלל‪ .‬כתגובה לביקורת מטעם תנועת‬ ‫השחרור השחורה‪ ,‬השתתפה נאס״א‪ ,‬לזמן קצר‪ ,‬בעיצוב ובהשמת חומרים שפותחו בתכנית‬ ‫החלל בדיור הציבורי‪ .‬חלק ניכר מהמאבק השחור וממעורבותו במרוץ לחלל נמחק מהזיכרון‬ ‫הקולקטיבי‪ .‬ס וכנ ות ח ל ל שח ורה מבקשת לעורר מחדש את זכרם של כל אותם מאורעות‬ ‫מקושרים ואת תולדותיהם שלא נחקרו מספיק‪ ,‬לחשוף את החוטים הנמתחים מהם ולהראות‬

‫הלאה לחלל — סיפורים חלופיים לקוסמוס‬

‫המשבר הסביבתי‪ ,‬הפוליטי והכלכלי של ימינו והחרדה מפני המחר לצד שאיפות קולוניאליות‬ ‫להתרחבות בין‪-‬כוכבית הביאו להתפתחות חדשה במרוץ לחלל‪ ,‬שכולל כיום מדינות וחברות‬ ‫פרטיות הנאבקות זו בזו על משאבי הירח המוגבלים‪ .‬מאזן הכוחות בעולם אמנם השתנה מאז‬ ‫ימי המלחמה הקרה‪ ,‬אך לאור כישלון הדמוקרטיה‪ ,‬עליית הלאומיות וההתדרדרות הכללית‬ ‫בתחום המדיני‪ ,‬ובהתחשב בנטייה הטוטליטארית שמתפתחת במדינות הגוש הסוציאליסטי‬ ‫לשעבר ומעבר לו‪ ,‬נראה שהתבוננות מחודשת בפוליטיקה של התקופה ההיא עשויה לסייע‬ ‫לנו להבין את הבלבול ואת האדישות הפוליטית הנוכחיים ובמקביל לאפשר לנו לחשוב על‬ ‫תרחישים שונים לעתיד‪.‬‬ ‫התערוכה ״הלאה לחלל – סיפורים חלופיים לקוסמוס״ מציגה עבודות של שישה אמנים‬ ‫וקולקטיבים בינלאומיים שמשלבים נרטיבים מושתקים ופרקטיקות של פוסט‪-‬זיכרון בהקשרים‬ ‫ובתהליכים פוליטיים עכשוויים‪ .‬המצע הרעיוני שדרכו נחשפים ידע מורכב‪ ,‬זכרונות מודחקים‬ ‫ותרחישים נשכחים לעתיד פג‪-‬תוקף הוא אסטרטגיות חקר החלל השונות שבהן נקטו מדינות‬ ‫במאה ה‪ 20-‬כדי להרחיב את השפעתן הגאופוליטית‪ ,‬לצבור כוח ולהגשים אוטופיות‪.‬‬ ‫התערוכה‪ ,‬שמציגה שלל סיפורים הקשורים בחקר החלל ומדגימה כיצד אידאולוגיות שולטות‪,‬‬ ‫השקפות פוליטיות ופרספקטיבות חברתיות דומיננטיות השפיעו על התחום מאז ומתמיד‪,‬‬ ‫מאירה מבחר נרטיבים חלופיים לעתיד ולהווה ומציעה דרכים אמנותיות לייצוג סיפורים‬ ‫מושתקים ולתביעת חלקם בעבר ובעתיד‪ .‬האמנים מטפלים באירועים מהעבר כדי לדון בסוגיות‬ ‫עכשוויות‪ ,‬כגון האנטישמיות הגואה‪ ,‬אסטרטגיות הגירה חדשות‪ ,‬תנועות פמיניסטיות‪ ,‬הפרדה‬ ‫כלכלית וחוסר שוויון שהולך ומקצין‪ .‬העבודות בתערוכה עוסקות בחקר החלל מעמדה של‬ ‫מיעוטים אתניים‪ ,‬נשים‪ ,‬בעלי חיים‪ ,‬קהילות קטנות וכלכלות חלשות ובכך הן חושפות את‬ ‫המחיר שגבו הפיתוח והקדמה הטכנולוגיים מאוכלוסיות אלה‪ .‬למרות השפעתו הניכרת באסון‬ ‫הסביבתי והפוליטי שלפתחנו‪ ,‬המחיר ששילמו אותן קבוצות מעולם לא היווה חלק מהשיח‬ ‫על העטיפה‪:‬‬ ‫אנדריאה סטניסלב‪,‬‬ ‫געגועים לכדור‬ ‫הארץ ‪,2019 ,2‬‬ ‫‪ ,50 x 50‬קולאז’‬ ‫מדיה מעורבת‬ ‫‪On the cover:‬‬ ‫‪Andréa‬‬ ‫‪Stanislav,‬‬ ‫‪Nostalgia for‬‬ ‫‪Earth II, 2019,‬‬ ‫‪50 x 50, archival‬‬ ‫‪digital prints,‬‬ ‫‪refractive film,‬‬ ‫‪retro glow film‬‬ ‫‪on velvet coated‬‬ ‫‪paper‬‬

‫הרשמי על כיבוש החלל ששימש את המדינות השונות כסמל של עוצמה לאומית‪ .‬האמנים‬ ‫בתערוכה מרחיבים את תחום הידע המשותף וכוללים בו היסטוריות ועתידים חלופיים ובכך‬ ‫הם מחזירים למקומן זהויות עקורות‪ ,‬חושפים מקרים של נישול ועושים צדק היסטורי עם‬ ‫קהילות ויחידים מושתקים‪.‬‬ ‫תולדות תכנית החלל הסובייטי שימשו מראשיתה ככלי תעמולה רב עוצמה ליצירת זהות‬ ‫לאומית‪ .‬נרטיב החלל הרשמי‪ ,‬כמו גם מדיניות בחירת הגיבורים שיגלמו את ההישגים‬ ‫הסובייטים בתחום‪ ,‬עוצבו בהתאם לשיח האידיאולוגי‪ .‬בעבודה ק ו ס מ ו ס י י ד י ( ‪Yiddish‬‬ ‫‪ )Cosmos‬יבגני פיקס מציע נקודת מבט אלטרנטיבית על תכנית כיבוש החלל של בריה״מ מתוך‬ ‫החוויה היהודית‪-‬סובייטית‪ .‬העבודה יוצרת נרטיב פוטוריסטי שממזג בתוכו רעיונות של פיתוח‬ ‫טכנולוגי‪ ,‬עקרונות מתרבות היידיש ופרשנות מחודשת למאבק למען חופש התנועה ולדמותו‬ ‫של מסורב העלייה בתקופה של אנטישמיות ממסדית‪ .‬העבודה מבוססת על סיפורם של שלושה‬
