Lyle Lovett and His Large Band 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 26 A star as big as Texas itself.

To many, Lyle Lovett is the modern embodiment of Texas music — its celebratory swing, its vigorous country soul and, most of all, its extraordinary literate sense of storytelling. Lovett’s songs are full of wit and wisdom with characters and concepts that loom large on the American landscape. “Lovett’s music distinctively melds folk, Texas swing, blues, jazz, gospel, and traditional country and western,” writes Reuters, “and the songs are often as infused with Texas spirit as tumbleweed and wide open plains.” Details magazine adds, “He’ll make you want to trade your loft for a two-story house with a wraparound porch.” Lovett is a four-time Grammy winner and has led a remarkable career which now includes fourteen albums and over four million records sold. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has created an incredible body of acclaimed work. His songwriting has a unique and rich style that has become synonymous with the artist, as evidenced by such well-known songs as “If I Had a Boat,” “Nobody Knows Me,” “South Texas Girl,” “She’s No Lady,” “Baby Don’t Tolerate,” “In My Own Mind,” “That’s Right (You’re Not From Texas),” “Here I Am,” and revered albums as “Lyle Lovett,” “Pontiac,” “Lyle Lovett and His Large Band,” “Joshua Judges Ruth,” “The Road To Ensenada” and 2007’s “It’s Not Big It’s Large.” “Natural Forces” continues in the tradition of timeless music Lovett continues to create. lylelovett.com

Andy McKee is one of the world’s finest acoustic soloists. His videos are among the highest rated on YouTube, and he has held its first, second and third positions for Top-Rated Videos of All Time. Consequently, he performs 100 to 200 shows annually across the world. McKee’s performances employ altered tunings, partial capos, percussive hits and tapping. In his hands these are not mere parlor tricks, but compositional tools used to create some of the finest crafted music for the steel string acoustic guitar. McKee was born in Topeka, Kansas, and still lives there today.

Inspired by “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Star Wars” and the pulp serials of the 1930s, “The Intergalactic Nemesis” is a spectacle unlike any other for the kid in everyone. Featured on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and NPR’s “All Things Considered,” “The Intergalactic Nemesis” is a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience that creates a mash-up of radio drama with comic books. Three actors voice dozens of characters; a Foley artist creates hundreds of sound effects; a keyboardist performs a score; while on a two-story high screen are projected more than 1,250 individual, full-color, handdrawn, high-resolution, blowyour-mind comic book images to tell the story visually. Live. The year is 1933. Are you ready for the adventure?

Bill Engvall

Two shows: 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 5 Aged and confused or 15 degrees off cool…you decide! The quality that makes a successful entertainer is the ability to connect with an audience. It’s the ability to share the humor in everyday situations that has made Bill Engvall one of the top comedians today — and among the busiest. Platinum recording artist and Grammy nominee Bill Engvall is currently working on an animated show for Country Music Television’s “Bounty Hunters” as well as developing a new show for TNT. Prior to this he was the host of “Lingo” for the Game Show Network, and most recently starred in the Hallmark Channel movie “Kiss at Pine Lake.” He also starred in and executive produced his own self-titled sitcom for TBS, which ran for three seasons. Bill was a member of the highly successful “Blue Collar Comedy Tour” and reunited with Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy for a comedy special that aired on CMT.

LONDON STAGE

Shakespeare’s

“The Merchant of Venice”

7:30 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-27 in Nichols Hall What’s your price for a “pound of flesh?” Wanting to belong is a powerful force: It drives us to search for love, strive for fortunes, rail against injustice and embrace happiness. Shakespeare’s provocative comedy, “The Merchant of Venice,” starts with Bassanio’s quest for Portia. Funded by an ill-conceived loan drawn against Antonio’s expected fortunes, the road to true love will not be smooth. When plans go awry, betrayal and blind anger

face off against a cry for compassion and a clever young lawyer in disguise. In the end, on a moonlit night in Belmont, all are left to question justice, the power of love and how far people go just to belong. Founded in 1975, Actors from The London Stage is one of the oldest established touring Shakespeare theater companies in the world.

Turtle Island Quartet with Special Guest Tierney Sutton

“Poets & Prayers”

Turtle Island, the double Grammy-winning quartet that has redefined chamber jazz for more than 25 years, is joined by the great jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton in a concert that answers the simple question: What inspires us? From the moving traditional hymn “Wade in the Water” to Joni Mitchell’s “All I Want,” to settings of Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” and words of Hafiz and Rumi, “Poets & Prayers” celebrates the muse in all its forms.

Vocalist Sutton’s celebrated career includes multiple Grammy nominations, appearances at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center and the Hollywood Bowl, as well as a series of well-regarded recordings. “JazzTimes” says Sutton’s brilliance is her ability to blend seamlessly.

Mummenschanz is back! For 40 years the company has created a surreal and captivating universe of whimsy, wonder and ingenuity that delights both young and old. Mummenschanz revolutionized mime art a generation ago by blending dance, theater and puppetry, creating fantastical characters that spring to life.

They turn everyday objects into amazing abstract forms, wondrous costumes and expressive masks to spark imaginations. Fake heads are inflated or drawn from glowing wire. Faces made with clay, scraps of paper or even rolls of toilet paper cleverly change emotions. Mummenschanz creates a fantastic world that is wondrously human and extraordinarily poetic.

The Celtic Tenors 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 16 Classical, folk, Irish and pop harmonies just in time for St. Patty’s Day.

The Celtic Tenors is the most successful classical crossover group ever to emerge from Ireland. The Celtic Tenors “reinvent the whole tenor idiom,” according to Phil Coulter, the composer of “Remember Me.” The group is pioneering a new style of cool never before seen on the classical stage and is breaking the traditional stuffy tenor mold. The unique voices, charm and wit of Daryl Simpson, James Nelson and Matthew Gilsenan combine an emotive journey with a thoroughly uplifting experience.

Itzhak Perlman

4 p.m., Sunday, April 21 The undeniable reigning virtuoso of the violin.

Itzhak Perlman enjoys a superstar status rarely afforded a classical musician. Beloved for his charm and humanity as well as his talent, he is treasured by audiences throughout the world who respond not only to his remarkable artistry, but also to his irrepressible joy in making music. In January 2009 Perlman performed at the inauguration of President Barack Obama with clarinetist Anthony McGill, pianist Gabriela Montero and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, premiering a piece written for the occasion by John Williams. In December 2003 the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts granted Perlman a Kennedy Center Honor celebrating his distinguished achievements and contributions to the cultural and educational life of our nation. Russian National Ballet Theatre

Swan Lake

4 p.m., Sunday, April 28 A timeless tale of love and betrayal.

“Swan Lake” is a classic fairy tale with princes, princesses, evil sorcerers and magic spells—certainly the most popular of all classical ballets. From its first incarnation in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow to the many productions around the globe today, this timeless story of a young man’s love and betrayal of a swan queen, set to one of Tchaikovsky’s most enduring scores, continues to engage audiences and inspire new generations of dancers. Under the artistic direction of Elena Radchenko, the Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow during Perestroika in the late 1980s, when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union’s ballet institutions exercised their newfound creative freedom by starting new, vibrant companies dedicated to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet.

The worldwide party musical “Rock of Ages” features a mix of 28 rockin’ 80s tunes, including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “We Built This City,” “The Final Countdown,” “Wanted Dead or Alive,” “Here I Go Again,” “Can’t Fight This Feeling” and “I Want to Know What Love Is.” In 1987 on the Sunset Strip, a small town girl met a big city rocker. And in L.A.’s most famous rock club, they fell in love to the greatest songs of the 80s. It’s 2009 multiple Tony-nominee “Rock of Ages,” an arena-rock love story told through the mind-blowing, face-melting hits of Journey, Night Ranger, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Asia, Whitesnake and many more. Don’t miss this awesomely good time about dreaming big, playing loud and partying on!

Get up close and personal with the creatures that roamed the world millions of years ago! Erth — one of Australia’s best-loved and most innovative theater companies — takes kids of all ages on an extraordinary and highly interactive prehistoric journey with an incredible cast of lifelike dinosaurs during this fun-filled show. McCain Connections McCain Auditorium is committed to enhancing cultural expression, developing human potential and expanding knowledge by offering innovative engagement programs throughout the campus, community and region. McCain Connections is a comprehensive program that engages audiences of all ages, broadening arts experiences above and beyond the performance. Check our website at k-state.edu/mccain for periodic updates to this exciting program.

Community Connections

McCain Conversations Several artists in the McCain Performance Series offer master classes, lectures, residencies and other activities for schools, businesses, senior centers and other entities to connect artists to the community.

Campus Connections

McCain Conversations are informal pre-performance talks designed to inform, educate and engage audience members before certain McCain Performance Series events. Hosted by K-State faculty or other experts in the community, these talks are fun and free of charge to all ticket holders – and may even feature a guest appearance by one of the evening’s performers. Check our website at k-state.edu/mccain for details.

Post-performance dialogues Immediately following certain McCain Performance Series events, audience members are invited to remain in the theater to participate in an informal, moderated dialogue and question-and-answer session with the artists. Check our website at k-state.edu/mccain for details.

Select artists presented by the McCain Performance Series will visit campus classrooms and other locations to connect with students in informal settings. Campus Connections encourages dialogue and extends opportunities for K-State students to deepen learning unique to their fields or to discover issues beyond their classroom curriculum.

Free student matinees Free school matinee performances provide pre-college students live arts education experiences free of charge at McCain Auditorium. These performances are designed to nurture a lifelong appreciation of the performing arts. Teachers receive in-depth study guides that provide a curriculum context enhancing the experience.

Clifford the Big Red Dog Live (Grades K-2) 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24 It only takes a little to BE BIG!™ Celebrate the timeless values of Clifford’s BIG Ideas - Share, Play Fair, Have Respect, Work Together, Be Responsible, Be Truthful, Be Kind, Believe In Yourself, Be A Good Friend and Help Others. These sentiments have never been more fun as Clifford and his friends from Birdwell Island – Emily Elizabeth, Cleo and T-Bone – embark on new adventures. With memorable songs and choreography, there will be even more of him to love! Curriculum Connections: Early Reading, Emotional and Social Development, Literacy, Friends and Friendship, Self- Expression and Communication.

Walk On: The Story of Rosa Parks (Grades 3-6) 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23 In Montgomery, Alabama, a determined activist named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a city bus. The resulting uproar launched the civil rights movement and changed our country forever. “Walk On: The Story of Rosa Parks” weaves together music and drama to tell the story of Rosa Parks from her childhood in rural Alabama to her famous decision to “sit down and be counted.” The play dispels myths about Parks and her protest as it paints a portrait of a complex woman who had to find reconciliation within herself in order to become an effective civil rights leader. Exciting and inspirational, “Walk On: The Story of Rosa Parks” shows how the determination of one individual made all the difference in the struggle for freedom and equality in the United States. For information on how your class can experience a free student matinee performance, please call 785-532-6425.
