Paula Poundstone can be heard regularly on NPR’s #1 show, the Peabody-award winning weekly comedy news quiz Wait, Wait... Don’t Tell Me! When asked about Poundstone, Wait, Wait host Peter Sagal replied, “Paula Poundstone is the funniest human being I have ever known. On stage, Poundstone is known for her casual style, smart, observational humor, and a razor sharp spontaneous wit. Garrison Keillor described her as “the bravest and best improv comic of our time.” A star of several HBO specials, Poundstone was the first woman to share the dais with the President and perform standup comedy at the White House Correspondents Dinner. She is included in Comedy Central’s List of the 100 Best Standup Comics of All Time.

Timeless and historic rock and roll!

Sept2.017 24 Creedence Clearwater Revival’s distinctive swamp rock went against the grain of the ’60s psychedelic San Francisco and won a worldwide following and numerous gold and multiplatinum singles and albums. It was rebellious, sometimes militant rock, co-opted into three-minute radio gems that remain rock radio and movie soundtrack staples.

After Creedence Clearwater Revival disbanded in 1972, founding members and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Stu Cook and Doug “Cosmo” Clifford remained close. Realizing both missed playing live Creedence music that had been lying dormant, Doug and Stu put together Creedence Clearwater Revisited in 1995 to perform in concert the hit songs — touchstones of a generation. Hear classics like “Susie Q,” “Lodi,” “Proud Mary,” “Down On The Corner,” “Fortunate Son” and “Who’ll Stop The Rain!” 7

“Jake Shimabukuro is to the ukulele what Jimi Hendrix is to the guitar, John Coltrane is to the saxophone and Serena Williams is to the tennis racket.” — Greensboro News & Record

JAKE SHIMABUKURO T h e

J i m i

H e n d r i x

In his humble rise to becoming who Rolling Stone calls “one of the hottest axmen of the past few years,” Shimabukuro’s “virtuosic chops and tasteful sensibilities” (Billboard) took him from YouTube fame to being an “international sensation” (The Today Show) and was heralded as the “Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele” (Guitar Player). Renowned for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques, Jake views the ukulele as an “untapped source of music with unlimited potential.” His virtuosity defies label or category. Playing jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco and rock, Jake’s mission is to show everyone that the ukulele is capable of so much more than the traditional Hawaiian music — or the corny showbiz routines with which many associate it.

For more than 50 years, The Temptations have prospered, propelling popular music with a series of smash hits and sold-out performances throughout the world. “The crowds are bigger, the sales are sizzling,” says one industry report. “The outpouring of affection for this supergroup has never been greater.” The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temps began their musical life in Detroit in the early ‘60s. It wasn’t until 1964, however, that the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced “The Way You Do the things You Do” turned the guys into stars. An avalanche of hits followed, many of which — ”My Girl,” for instance — attained immortality. “It’s Growing,” “Since I Lost My Baby;,” “Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Beauty Is only Skin Deep,” “I Wish It Would Rain” — the hits kept coming. The current lineup is Otis Williams, Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks, Larry Braggs and Willie Greene Jr. “The more we change,” says veteran Ron Tyson, “the more we stay true to ourselves. We’re about singing straightup soul. It’s a style that will live on forever.” “The Temps have always been known for great lead singers,” says Williams. “Today we have four of the greatest leads in the proud history of the group.” The soaring voice of Philadelphia born and raised Ron Tyson is perhaps the best high tenor in the business. And so The TEMPTATIONS go on, and on, and on.

“Hamlet” is arguably Shakespeare’s greatest play. Written in 1602, it is one of the most complete portrayals of the human psyche that exists in Western literature. A compelling tale of familial discord, personal ambition, love and revenge, “Hamlet” has enthralled audiences for 400 years. Mortality and madness are two of the most pronounced themes of Shakespeare’s epic and the characters — Hamlet, Ophelia, Gertrude and Claudius — inhabit a rich landscape replete with deceit, mistrust and schemes. Four centuries after its premiere, “Hamlet” continues as one of the classics of the world stage. 29

Mar20c18h 2 “Sense & Sensibility” is one of Jane Austen’s most popular novels. The characters live in a world in which choices are limited — especially for the women. The story revolves around the lives of two sisters, Elinor who is levelheaded and full of sense, and the hopelessly romantic, Marianne. After the untimely and unexpected death of their father, both sisters and their mother are forced to leave their comfortable lives, while their half brother and his wife inherit the family estate. The only hope for these two sisters is a profitable marriage. Seduction, courtship, love, heartbreak and surprise abound in this classic romantic comedy.

David Sedaris With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. David Sedaris is the author of “Barrel Fever” and “Holidays on Ice,” as well as collections of personal essays, “Naked,” “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” “Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim,” “When You Are Engulfed in Flames,” and his most recent book, “Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls,” each of which became an immediate bestseller. The audio version of “Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls” is a 56th annual GRAMMY Awards nominee for Best Spoken Word Album. He is the author of the New York Times-bestselling collection of fables titled “Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary” (with illustrations by Ian Falconer). He was also the editor of “Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules: An Anthology of Outstanding Stories.” Sedaris’ pieces appear regularly in The New Yorker and have twice been included in “The Best American Essays.” There are a total of 10 million copies of his books in print and they have been translated into 29 languages.

Hamlet By William Shakespeare March 1 at 10 a.m., Aquila Theatre Recommended for grades 7 and up “Hamlet” is arguably Shakespeare’s greatest play. Written in 1602, it is one of the most complete portrayals of the human psyche that exists in Western literature. Mortality and madness are two of the most pronounced themes of Shakespeare’s epic and the characters; Hamlet, Ophelia, Gertrude, and Claudius inhabit a rich landscape replete with deceit, mistrust, and schemes. Four centuries after its premiere, “Hamlet” continues as one of the classics of the world stage.
