Interview by LUCY M. PRITCHETT / Photo by MELISSA DONALD

Beverly Bromley and her husband Bob were visiting friends in Michigan and went shopping in a newly opened oil and vinegar store. “I had a sip of an 18-year-old balsamic vinegar and it was like tasting fine wine. I walked out of the store with two bags full of flavored oils and vinegars and said, ‘I want to do this in Louisville.’” They opened Primo together in 2010.

GO-TO MEAL This dish only takes about 30 minutes from prep to table. Roast pine nuts and set aside. Boil pasta. In a skillet, sauté chopped garlic, onions and mushrooms in olive oil with a little cooking wine. Add cooked shrimp and spinach just to heat and then toss in the pasta. Add a little cream and grated Parmesan, creating a sauce. Before serving plates, swirl in Harissa olive oil to your taste and garnish with parsley and pine nuts.

GOLF “(Playing golf) is what I want to do when I am not doing anything else. I started playing golf in the mid-90s. Four years ago, I was one of the originating board members of the Louisville chapter of the Executive Women’s Golf Association. It gives me an opportunity to have a standing date to play golf with other women. I like the camaraderie, the chance to be outdoors, the exercise. I challenge myself to do better. That’s the fun — to beat my last score. I compete against myself.”

COMMUNITY GIVE-BACK Beverly is coordinator of JFCS’s signature fundraising event, the Mosaic Awards (Multicultural Opportunities for Success and Achievement In our Community), which recognizes new or first-generation immigrants and refugees who have made a contribution. “A mosaic is made up of little pieces that, once put together make a whole, just like the different colors and shapes of individuals who combine to make a community. People leave the event feeling uplifted. The stories of the immigrants and refugees are very heartwarming.” TODAY’S WOMAN

TEA PARTY GIRL

Life can turn on a dime, or in Nicolette Spears’ case, on a toe and a teacup.

“I have had lots of turning points that led up to where I am now,” says Nicolette Spears. “I began dancing at age 2, and that set my career path. That’s all I ever wanted to do. But when I was 16, I broke my foot while dancing, and that started a downward spiral that meant losing my one dream.” What followed were six months in a cast and many surgeries to repair her injury. She had to slow down. “Children rarely drink tea, but from a young age, I was a constant teaparty girl. It was an obsession I didn’t even know I had. Every weekend, I would take my younger brother — he was 11 — to this little tea shop in Phoenix and have tea. Eventually, the owner offered me a job. After my injury, I was driven to do something, so I took it. That began my education into everything tea.” After graduating from Stevens College, a time that included a fivemonth stint in Paris studying dance, Nicolette moved to Louisville, attracted by its local business and arts community. “I tried to continue teaching dance, but that was not working. I met Nick. He only knew tea that came from tea bags that his mom would give him when he had a cold. He has good business sense, and I have lots of ideas. That’s a good combination of skills. We decided to open Louisville Tea Company. I love this city, so I wanted Louisville to be in the name of the business. We carry all sorts of loose-leaf teas and tea accessories. I give classes on the history and the types of teas. My entire world is tea.”

Survival Skills By MARIE BRADBY Photo by MELISSA DONALD

“I was eating peanuts out of the bird feeder of the neighbor’s place…” Annie’s Survival Tips: 1. “Get support, and

give support in return. You never know who might be able to help you at a critical time in your life.”

A Fight to Survive “

Y

ou have to keep going,” says fitness guru and co-owner of a Pure Barre studio, Annie Locke. She survived a tumultuous childhood with a severely alcoholic mother, and a car accident as a teen that required thousands of stitches in her head. “You make your life what it is.” Annie tells it like it is: how she started as an impoverished girl in Charleston, W.Va., moved to Louisville, and worked her way up to opening and running several fitness businesses over the past 27 years. “We were extremely poor,” says Annie, 49, whose father left, causing her mother to spiral down due to alcoholism. “I started working at 13 — odd jobs.” By age 14, she and her brother were living alone, struggling to get back and forth to high school and surviving on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches fried in butter in a pan. At 17, she flipped a Jeep and was severely injured.

10

JANUARY

2014

Annie got a part-time job spinning the wheel as the “lottery girl,” and because the pay was so low, moved to Louisville, hoping to be the Kentucky lottery girl. “I was eating peanuts out of the bird feeder of the neighbor’s place and sleeping on the floor. I went to a bar and ate the chips and dip and put two dollars on the counter. I was determined not to go home.” Landing a job at an insurance company, she met her future husband, John Locke, the company owner. When she started to teach aerobics, “It made me feel like I had a purpose in life,” says Annie, who in 1984 opened her fitness studio, Power Moves, now part of Baptist East Milestone Wellness center. Two years ago, she opened a Pure Barre studio at 4284 Summit Plaza Drive. “I can look back because it makes me better,” says Annie, who, with John — a best-selling author and commercial property owner — has a daughter, 19, and a son, 14.

2. “Take control

of your destiny. Have a healthy respect for the unknown, but don’t fear it. Fear will keep you from taking action. The way I grew up, I should not be alive...but I always bounced back.”

3.

“Stick together. My brother is my rock. He kept us alive for two years when we didn’t see either of our parents.”

4. “Be a leader.

This doesn’t mean tell others what to do. It means be the type of person others choose to follow.”

5. “Find your strong.

I like the saying, ‘Your mind will quit 10 times before your body does.’” TODAY’S WOMAN

22THINGS

13.

What are you working on now?

Some Questions for

LINDSEY LAYTON

My daughter is 21 and my son is 17. My focus has been primarily on doing a great job of raising my kids. You know, I only get one chance at it. There are no do-overs. So that means my actions today have to line up with my values and my priorities. I have a year-anda-half, and my son will be off to college.

Lindsey and regular writer Holly Gregor met in yoga class about seven years ago. At that time she was newly divorced from her husband of 20 years, facing being a single mom of two children, 10 and 14. Here are her answers to the questions Holly asked her:

8. Was it daunting when you decided to start your business

14. What are

doing wellness coaching?

I had to face my fears head on: being a single mom, financial struggles, going back to school, and starting a new career. But faith is the opposite of fear, and my faith is what has carried me through each day. I had to be intentional: about my values, what’s most important to me, keeping hope alive — getting out of bed in the morning when it would have been easier to stay under the covers and hide from life.

9.

How does food play a part in wellness?

you focus on?

I had to be proactive; life is out there waiting to be lived, but it doesn’t come knocking at your door. I had to go out and get it. And I had to get help. I hired a life coach, a great counselor, and created a community of friends that are honest and supportive, and love me.

11. What is changing?

I will continue with my business as a wellness coach, and I have an idea I’ve had for 10 years, making a wellness DVD.... Fit, Fabulous, and 50!

“Yes, there is always some kind of pain in life; this life is not easy. It’s messy; it’s complicated. But, I’ve learned to dance through the pain, and make something beautiful out of this life!”

15.

What about romance?

Food changes everything. I love the quote by Hippocrates, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” I look at my body as a machine that needs to perform well. We were created to have healthy relationships with food. It’s 90 percent what we eat and 10 percent how we move that keeps us well.

10. What did

your plans then?

After being single for seven years, I’ve just started dating. My mom taught me I don’t need a man. When I realized I’m going to be an empty-nester soon, I thought “I better get out more.” You have to keep your heart open.

12. Could you talk about how you find balance? Keeping fun in my life is important 16. Why would you say to balance my work and being a parent. I love music; my body and soul responds to it.

Seeking perfection. Some people won’t entertain unless the house is spotless. People don’t care. They just want to be with each other. I’m over perfection.

you’re brave?

Because I never, ever give up! The struggles in life are what shape and mold our character...if we let them! I had 15 years of ballet, and I learned to dance through the pain of blisters on my feet, yet still making it look beautiful.

According to the Mayo Clinic, laughter has both short and long-term benefits. On the spot, laughter stimulates the heart and lungs, releases endorphins, and soothes tension. And, over time, chuckles can boost your immune system, relieve pain, and help alleviate stress and anxiety.

Stephanie Bristow opened a barre fitness studio in fall of 2012. She then partnered up with Rashna Carmicle, and they expanded the vision to create B.YOU fitness studio (3934 Chenoweth Square) and offer cardio, sculpting, stretching, and interval training classes. Their concept has been successful, and the two of them are expanding to an additional location in the Springhurst Shopping Center (10513 Fischer Park Drive). We talked with Stephanie about their newest workout in a silk hammock.

Q: What is B. Silque Fit? A: It is a modern

fitness method that utilizes a suspended aerial silk hammock for a complete body workout. The method is inspired from aerial yoga, ballet, Pilates, suspension training, and traditional strength exercises.

Q: Why is this form of exercise beneficial? A: B ecause it focuses

on core strength and proper body alignment. Increasing core strength is an automatic cure for most lower back and joint pain. We have clients that tell us weekly how their chronic pains have disappeared.

Q: If I’m not in great shape, can I still participate? A: A bsolutely, all

fitness levels are welcome! We aim to provide beginner clients with a fitness regimen to build strength and meet their health and fitness goals.

The Fresh Market

This family-owned natural food market seeks out local farmers and small-batch vendors to stock products you might not find anywhere else. From locally-sourced vegetables and gluten-free foods to more exotic fare such as kimchee, homeopathic remedies, and specialty grocery items, the store’s offerings reflect a commitment to healthy living and a respect for the environment. “We have a focus on products that are not genetically modified, and our produce department is almost entirely organic,” says Summer Auerbach, COO. “That really sets us apart from any other store in the city.”

You’ll find high-quality meats, fresh seafood, international grocery items, and organic selections throughout the store, all presented in a warm atmosphere of old-world charm. “We enjoy serving the Louisville community and providing residents here with The Fresh Market’s unique shopping experience,” says store manager Michael Mederich. With an extensive program for supporting local farmers, The Fresh Market also offers locally grown produce, labeled with signs that say either “100” or “300” to let you know when the product is sourced within 100 or 300 miles of the store.
