“I am thankful for the mess to clean after a party because it means

I h a v e b een s u r ro u n d e d b y fr i e n ds . ” — Nancie J. Carmody, author

THE PERFECT PARTY

Hat by Attitudes by Angie, $598, attitudesbyangie.com

We gathered five creative party hints from expert Carrie Cooke Ketterman, who runs The Old Capitol Tea Room, a vintage tea room along with her husband Jeff. She is also an artist, musician, and has a travel blog.

1. Attach a theme that lets your guests know they are in for an exciting party; not just a veggie

tray and cheese cube get together. For instance, how about a 1970s themed Derby party?

2. Use your party as an excuse to dress up. As a huge vintage

enthusiast, I love to pick up a statement piece from The Nitty Gritty and wear it for a party.

3. Set the atmosphere with appropriate tunes. I am

particularly fond of uptempo 1920s and 1930s music for our afternoon tea parties. I like 1950s Mad Menesque big band and lounge music for cocktails or cooking around the BBQ for a summer get together. Maybe a Parisian 1960s pop station mixed with Django Reinhardt for background during a graduation party.

4. Get creative with your decor. Remember those Derby hats

stacked in the closet? Use them for decor by hanging them on a wall or place them around your tables. For example, the tea trays I use in our tea room are vintage plates that I have glued on candlesticks or sherbert glasses found in thrift stores. They are statement pieces that put a twist on displaying appetizers and are super easy to make.

5. For drinks, think of the little details to add. Maybe you have

an herb station for your drinks both alcoholic and non. A sprig of rosemary, lavender, mint, cucumber wheels, or lemon verbena leaves are both a nice touch for decor at a bar and tastes lovely in a drink whether it is bourbon, tea, or just water.

elping nonprofit organizations thrive in the community is a priority for the Bridgeman family. Eden Bridgeman, along with her brothers Ryan and Justin, host The Trifecta Gala, an annual fundraiser spearheaded by the Bridgeman Charitable Group. The Bridgemans, who have been hosting fundraisers since 2003, are passionate about their philanthropic platform and want to heighten the visibility of the gala. “It’s our way of giving back to selected charities each year as well as using our own network and platform to highlight why Louisville is an amazing city and using the power of the Kentucky Derby to bring in various celebrities and guests of ours,” Eden says. Giving guests a memorable experience, says Eden, is partially based on bringing in high profile celebrities like Usher who’ll be performing at this year’s event and creating an intimate party setting. “We want the public to come and experience something unlike what they’ve seen before… we want to make sure the guests know that the money they are spending is well spent,” she says. Proceeds from the event will benefit the West End School, the University of Louisville Autism Center, and the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The Trifecta Gala WHEN May 3, 7pm WHERE KFC YUM! Cups: Bibb lettuce separated into individual leaves

Cucumber Aioli Dressing:

Filling:

1 large hot house cucumber, cut into large sections

1 lb ground turkey

¼ c mayo

4 slices thick cut bacon

½ tsp salt

1 tsp dried basil

½ tsp apple cider vinegar

½ tsp garlic powder ¼-½ tsp red cayenne pepper (by taste) ½ tsp salt 1 navel orange (use ½ while cooking the turkey) 1 ripe avocado 2 tomatoes 1-1 ½ cups fresh peas (or frozen and heated)

LOCAL PRODUCTS Maker’s Mark Bourbon produced in Loretto, KY. Bibb lettuce, Indiana grown hydroponic lettuce can be found in Kroger grocery stores.

Cool slightly and pour over the turkey/bacon mixture and toss until completely coated. Orange Bourbon Almond Poke Cake Citrus, blackberries, and bourbon combine to make a gluten-free cake perfect for a spring party.

Cake:

Sauce:

2 medium navel oranges (zest and juice both oranges = ½ cup juice and 1 Tbsp zest) 1 c sugar in the raw (½ c with the orange juice and ½ c with the eggs) ⅓ c olive oil (use a milder olive oil — anything but extra virgin)

¼ c bourbon (We used Four Rose’s Small Batch)

2 c fresh blackberries

4 eggs, room temperature

⅓ c bourbon (We used Four Rose’s Small Batch)

3 c almond flour 1 Tbsp baking powder ½ tsp salt

⅓ c maple syrup 1 ½ tsp arrowroot or cornstarch. Instructions: Add all the ingredients and simmer until thick (about 5-7 minutes). Strain through a sieve to remove seeds, cool slightly.

Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 F.

Assemble:

Grease a square, 2 quart glass baking dish and set aside.

Remove cake from the oven and let cool completely. Poke holes about ½” apart from each other and about ½” down into the cake.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the orange juice, orange zest, ½ c of the sugar, olive oil, and bourbon — set aside. Blend eggs while slowly adding the other ½ c of sugar. Blend until all the sugar has been added (some sugar may not dissolve completely in the egg mixture, which is okay). Combine the egg mixture with the orange mixture and blend for a few seconds to mix all wet ingredients, and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the almond flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the wet mixture and whisk until everything is well incorporated. Do not leave any lumps. Add mixture to the 2 quart dish and place on the middle rack of the oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes. Test the middle to make sure it is firm and a cake tester comes out clean. While cake is baking, prepare the sauce.

LOCAL PRODUCTS Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon produced in Lawrenceburg, KY.

34

April 2019 / TodaysWomanNow.com

Pour sauce over holes first and then over the entire cake when the holes are full. Spread sauce over the surface and let cool — dust with powdered sugar and garnish with blackberries before serving.

athy and Irv Bailey believe every child should be in a safe, loving home — and they are determined to make it happen. In 2001, the couple founded Open Arms, a non-profit organization that provides foster care and adoption services to children whose mothers are incarcerated. Families who sign up to foster children complete a 3- to 6-month training program. “By the time they complete this training, they are fully prepared to take care of these children. We have had close to 50 children go through the program. The majority of our children have been adopted,” Cathy says. Open Arms continues building success with the creation of its annual fundraiser, Silks in the Bluegrass. The event includes dinner followed by the Silks Bash After-Party, which started in 2018. Cathy says tickets sell out quickly: last year 300 guests attended the after-party. Silks in the Bluegrass WHEN May 3, 6:30pm; after-party, 8pm WHERE Locust Grove COST $250 CONTACT 502.777.6300

SAVE FACE Whether you’re at the track or one of the big galas, the longevity of your makeup can make or break your look — no matter how chic your Derby outfit might be. Denise Cardwell, makeup artist and owner of Image Works Studio, shares her secrets to sweat-proofing your makeup. • MOISTURIZE first thing out of the shower and allow 10-15 minutes to absorb into the skin. • USE A FACE PRIMER during the warm months. • AVOID OIL-BASED foundations and opt for a silicone-based, long-wearing foundation. The silicone acts as a barrier to keep foundation from seeping into the pores. • USE A DENSELY PIGMENTED waterproof concealer for blemishes. • APPLY A CREAM EYESHADOW instead of powder, because powder plus sweat does not equal pretty. Read labels and look for waterproof and long-wearing formulas. • USE WATERPROOF MASCARA and eyeliner to prevent raccoon eyes.

FOR THE

I’ve done truSculpt and EmSculpt. I loved seeing how much it can flatten out the tummy and build that muscle. — Katy Jo Gardner

SCULPT YOUR WAY TO NON-INVASIVE FAT REMOVAL WHAT IT IS CaloSculpting is a set of noninvasive body contouring treatments to eliminate fat, reduce cellulite and build muscle. CaloSpa offers five unique, FDA approved modalities: CoolSculpting, which freezes fat; truSculpt, which uses radiofrequency (RF) heat to destroy fat; EmSculpt, which uses electromagnetic energy to burn fat and build muscle; and their go-to cellulite reduction treatments, ThermiSmooth, which uses RF energy to eliminate fat and tighten the skin, and Cellfina, which releases the connective tissue bands on the buttocks and back of the legs that cause cellulite. Treatable areas include submental fat, arms, back, flanks, abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles. Advertorial

PRE-TREATMENT PREPARATION Patients don’t need to do anything special to prepare for their treatments. However, patients are encouraged to maintain an active lifestyle and healthy diet. It is also best to be at your ideal weight. CaloSculpting treatments are best for treating those stubborn areas of fat and cellulite that are resistant to all efforts through diet and exercise.

naturally process the destroyed fat and eliminate the dead cells. Once these fat cells are destroyed they are not coming back.

COST Depending on a patient’s needs and desired outcomes, packages can run between $1,000$5,000. CaloSpa offers customized packages for patients based on their goals and budget.

TIME COMMITMENT Because most non-invasive body contouring treatments have to be done in a series, the results are not instant, unlike surgical procedures. These treatments are done over several weeks. Maintenance treatments may be needed periodically and depends on the patient’s lifestyle and needs. Some treatments may require a series of two to four treatments. Most treatments are done under an hour, unless we are treating multiple areas.

RESULTS In general, patients who undergo body contouring treatments will see the final results within three to four months from the initial treatment start date. It takes time for the body to

POST-TREATMENT CARE There may be some swelling, tenderness, and a little redness at the treatment site, but patients can return to their normal activities the same day unless they choose not to. Today’s Woman / April 2019

FIND YOUR PERFECT LOOK, FROM COCKTAIL TO COUTURE WHAT IT IS The Empress is a special occasion boutique where you can find the perfect dress for any event. At this time of year, many teen girls are thinking about prom, while many of their parents are thinking about their wallets. The Empress understands that big events like these make life-long memories, and that each young woman will want to have a dress unlike anyone else’s. Each girl that enters the store will find a wide array of unique dresses, many of which can’t be found anywhere else in town. PRE-TREATMENT/PREP Come into the store with an open mind. Even if you’ve looked through pictures and believe you’ve found the perfect thing, don’t let your heart be set on that option. Many people find the perfect dress when they are open to trying on a variety of styles. Formal dresses look very different on the body than how they do when displayed on a hanger. It’s great to bring in photos of styles you are interested in, but keeping an open mind will guarantee you find the dress of your dreams!

Owner Sarah Muntzer has worked in this industry for 8 years, and in the last six months opened The Empress, featuring prom, pageant, and Derby dresses.

66

April 2019 / TodaysWomanNow.com

COST The Empress has something for every shape, size, and budget. The goal is for every person to walk away from The Empress feeling beautiful. Short dresses begin at $99, and the average cost is $200. A full-length prom dress ranges from $99-$520, but the average cost is $350. Layaway is an option as well.

RESULTS The Empress carries dress collections from unique designers that grant the boutique exclusive rights to the line in the Louisville area. They have over 800 pieces in-stock and are able to special order other colors and sizes in most gowns in as promptly as 3 business days! At The Empress, you are guaranteed to have a one-of-akind dress. Their unique gown registry tracks each dress sold to ensure that only one of each is found at a particular event. TIME COMMITMENT Prom dresses are needed for a limited time each year, so they aren’t mass-produced. Style, color, and size options are limited. If you find the perfect dress, don’t think too long before buying it. Many dresses are sold as separates, so the tops can be dressed up or down and put with alternate pieces so they can be worn on other occasions.

ADD PIZAZZ TO YOUR LOOK WITH A FUN ‘TOPPER’ WHAT IT IS A wig or a topper (a hair piece that is incorporated into one’s own hair) can be an easy — and fun — solution for those who may have thinning hair or don’t like the hair they have. Alternative hair gives a woman the option to add length or volume or simply to have a new look. The Wig Shoppe is also well-known for providing support, care, and a great head of hair for women who are experiencing hair loss, cancer, and alopecia. They take pride in caring for these individuals and helping them through those difficult experiences. PRE-TREATMENT/PREP It’s not necessary to know anything about the process or be at any certain level of hair loss. The Wig Shoppe talks through the process step-by-step to make each woman comfortable. It can be helpful for customers to look online or bring in pictures of hair styles or colors that they would like to try. It may also be fun to bring along a friend who can help make the decision. COST Costs vary based on the type of hair (synthetic or human) and the type of cap that goes underneath the wig. Each piece is customized and can range from $140-$2,000. For those seeking a wig for medical reasons, The Wig Shoppe will help file insurance reimbursement claims. Advertorial

RESULTS The Wig Shoppe sends clients home with everything they’re going to need, including hair products, care instruction, and confidence in how to put on and style their new hair. If it’s synthetic, it will be low maintenance, although a synthetic or human hair wig may require trimming and fitting, which are offered at no additional charge after purchase. TIME COMMITMENT The length of time to select a wig depends on the individual, but on average it takes 45 minutes to an hour. Each person is welcome to try on as many pieces as they like. Make Your Party Bloom

W

e asked Amy Moyer, manager of Colonial Designs, located at 3712 Lexington Road, for advice on choosing the best Derby floral centerpiece for your upcoming event. Amy says knowing whether the event will be a buffet or sit-down dinner helps them determine how tall the centerpiece should be. “If you are going to have a buffet, you are going to have something taller and for a sit-down, you need something shorter. We also need to know what color theme you want. [For Derby], we typically use bright, springy colors like hot pinks, reds, yellows, and blues.” “[The prices for a buffet arrangement] start at $75-$100. If you have round top tables and will have a sit-down dinner, the starting price for a square arrangement is $45-$50, but it depends on how big your table is and what type of flower selection you want.” — Tiffany White

Cheers to Bowties

Party Hostess Sara Floyd says, “Nothing says Derby like seersucker suits and bowties. Add a preppy flare to your party glassware with a store-bought box of bowtie pasta and a little paint. Once the paint is dry, you can use a Sharpie to add a stripe or polka dot pattern for interest. A little dot of hot glue secures the ties to the cup. Fill them up with a Kentucky libation and serve. Cheers!”

Make it Personal Do you know who won the Kentucky Derby the year you were born? “I sure didn’t until I did some research,” says Sara Floyd. “Last May, I set a whimsical breakfast table with copies of the partial front pages of the Courier-Journal representing the birth year of each guest. I found the pages online and printed and laminated them, so that guests could take them home if they desired. These added a visual interest at each place setting and served as great conversation starters around the table.” You can see more of Sara’s ideas on Instagram @MakeItMomma.

If you are hosting Derby festivities or simply having your girlfriends over for a fillies luncheon, Sara suggests skipping the traditional table runner and opting for a brown sugar track instead. “Use a strip of turf or green felt squares as your base, and pour a few bags of dark brown sugar in a strip to create a replica of Churchill’s famous dirt track. Once your track is set, place a few Breyer toy horses securely in the sugar and you’ve got a parade of ponies as a fun focal point for your table.” If you don’t have toy horses on hand, head to the Dollar Tree toy aisle. A Retreat in the City By Megan M. Seckman Photos Joon Kim

Crosley turntables, bourbon, and horse racing. These are a few of the themes indigenous to the River City that you will see throughout Guesthouse on Story, a seven-bedroom property in the heart of Butchertown that celebrates everything awesome about our hometown. As you enter the completely renovated 5,000 square-foot space, you are reminded why Forbes deemed Louisville one of America’s coolest cities. Throughout the vibrant, festive space, bins of records wait to be spun on the 12 colorful Crosley record players that adorn each room. Three giant record-shaped tables fill the dining room, and pictures of Louisville neighborhoods, famous Louisville natives, and vintage album covers line the walls. This is a place to have an unforgettable party — and your hosts Kim and Kate Lesak (sisters and business partners) have painstakingly cultivated an environment of fun. Kim says the concept was a bit of a gamble, but she and her sister willingly placed their bets on the property they purchased in 2015 for $50 a square foot. The bones of the PAGE 78 >>

The first thing they realized was that every room was going to need it’s own bathroom — no one likes sharing. “We knew that adding all the plumbing was going to be costly, so we went in with plan A, B, and C. Our worst-case scenario was that we would sell our own homes and move in together,” Kim says in hindsight. “But here we are on year three! We’ve been written up in Money Magazine and have hosted people from all over the country.” The sisters have both kept their day-jobs, but take turns fulfilling the business’s needs. “We are always cleaning and painting and answering Sisters Kim and Kate Lesak decided to take a gamble and invest in a 5,000-square-foot building to create emails,” Kim says as her daughter an upscale boutique hotel. listens from the other room. Guesthouse on Story rents single rooms Sunday through Wednesday and the whole house Thursday through Saturday. Tailoring to a niche market of the 10+ crowd, local renters use the space for reunions, girls’ nights out, and wedding parties. In addition, much of the business comes from out-of-towners visiting Louisville for concerts, the Derby, and of course, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. “My biggest surprise was the amount of people who come through to experience the Bourbon Trail. I would say that is about 90 percent of our clientele,” Kim explains while walking me through the vast three-story space. Kentucky’s $8.5 billion bourbon industry has been acbourbon barrel. arbara Turner, executive pastry chef at Butchertown Grocery, transforms the basic ingredients of the traditional Mint Julep drink into a dessert. The Mint Julep Sundae looks like the classic sundae, but with a bit of decadence. You will bite into a bourbon-soaked chocolate pound cake topped with chocolate mint ice cream, strawberry compote, fresh whipped cream, a sprinkling of bourbon candied pecans, and three bourbon cherries. The varying flavors of bourbon, she says, make it the perfect ingredient for any dessert. “Bourbon has so many characteristics that go with dessert-type items. They have caramel notes, citrus notes, and cinnamon notes, she says. The dessert is only available during Derby season, but if you need to satisfy your bourbon craving throughout the year, you can try their Bourbon & Maple Sundae or their Banana Bread Pudding with Bourbon Barrel Ice Cream.
