Melody Beattie Those of you who know me and my family personally will know that my daughter was at Manchester Arena on the night of the terrorist attack. We will forever be thankful that she and her friends came home safely to their families that night, when so many will never be able to do so. In the days that followed we received large numbers of calls and messages from so many friends and the love, care and support was very much appreciated.

July brings the end of another school year and all of the activities associated with this period. I have many happy memories of sports days, end of year concerts and preparations for moving to the next stage of life. For another of my children, this year it is the end of school life and another set of A Level results is awaited! The August issue will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Wednesday 12th July. Enjoy July, and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine.

Best wishes,

community Community Hi Everyone, Warm sunny days are just around the corner, and we are so looking forward to enjoying our walks with man’s best friend. We will be holding their annual Scrufts Dog Show on Sunday 2nd July. There will be Rosettes for 1st,2nd,3rd prize, plus raffle and stalls. Food and drinks will also be available. It takes place at the recreation ground at Tithes Lane in Tickhill. Entry is free. Hopefully the weather will be glorious for everyone and you will be able to bring a rug and a picnic hamper for a fantastic fun/family day out. We here at the Sanctuary love this event as it gives us the opportunity to meet all of our dogs that have gone to their forever homes. Please come along to support this event, we will look forward to seeing everyone. Marks & Spencer Wheatley Hall Road Doncaster have been at our Sanctuary for 3 days this week doing lots of projects to help us. They have worked so hard, gardening, painting and generally tidying up. They sent a team of 10 every day and they were amazing. I still can’t believe these people took time out of their busy store to help us, but help us they did, in the hands on best way possible. We are still working with M & S for on- going fund raising projects which we are really excited about. At last Roxy our long term beautiful Staffy went to her forever home at the weekend, we are so pleased for this lovely mature girl, we even have a video of her enjoying her new garden. May you enjoy your new home for years to come Roxy, you waited a long time for this, so it’s your time now. A lovely dog was found in the road with a nasty injury to her leg. She was taken to the vet by a passer-by who then asked us if we could take her, which we did. We thought her

Finding a forever home injury was going to be ok, however unfortunately she has had to have her leg amputated. She is the most loving creature and deserves a wonderful home. She is not ready to be viewed as yet as she is with a foster family until she heals a little. But look out for her on our web site in the next few weeks. (We have named her Grace) This brings me onto vets fees, last year our bill was close to £60,000 for the year. This is a lot of money to find when you are a charity and rely on donations to keep you afloat. If anyone would like to make any contributions/ donations to help with vets fees for Grace please either forward a cheque or ask about giving a donation by direct debit every month. As little as £3 per month would make such a difference. We are arranging a table top sale in Tickhill Scout Head Quarters on the 16th of Sept . If you would like to hire a table they will be £12 each. Please come along and bag a bargain. If you would like to book a table please call Janice 07590455340 If you require any further information about the work we do please call us 01302 711330 we will be happy to help Bye for now

Name: Poppy Female Sex: Date into care: Feb 17 Age: 6 years Good with dogs: Unsure Good with cats: Yes - KitKat Lived with children: Older Poppy came into care with her buddy Kitkat due to illness in the family. They are very bonded and aren’t usually far from each other. Either snuggled up together snoozing or grooming each other Therefore a home together is essential for this pair. They can be a little wary of strangers but if you have the patience and are calm you will be rewarded with lots of purrs and ‘kitty kisses’ They would probably be suited to a calmer household where they can settle in at their own pace. Could they come home with you?

Tickhill Estfeld School Race for Life... Tickhill Estfeld Primary School Race for Life – Making a Difference On Friday 9th June 2017 we hosted our school’s own Race for Life. The afternoon was a great success; our pupils and their families and our staff really should feel very proud of themselves – we certainly are very proud of them. Every pupil designed their own race number, some in memory of loved ones, which they wore for the race; their individual and personal designs were lovely to see. Every child received a medal and a piece of fruit at the end of the race. The support for the pupils was tremendous – clapping and cheering all round – there was a great atmosphere. The pupils were sponsored to run on the VFKRRO ¿ HOG E\ WKHLU IDPLOLHV DQG IULHQGV ZKR have been very generous in their donations to Cancer Research UK. We are very grateful to everybody who has helped to support the charity and the vitally important work that they do. Thank you also to Tesco at Balby who donated a piece of fruit for every child. At the time of writing donations were in excess of £600, and we expect this to increase in the following days. Together we can make a difference – a cure could be found within our children’s lifetime.

community Garden View

By Rachel Leverton

Take a seat This year I decided to buy an all-weather seat for my garden. Bizarrely I didn’t actually have a permanent place to sit where I could admire my hard work. There is an art to choosing and placing garden seating. First decide whether you want to sit in full sun, or dappled shade. Watch the path of the sun and make a note of which particular parts of the garden are illuminated at each time of day. Think about when you will sit in you garden. Will you want to eat breakfast out there? If so pop a seat and little table in a spot which catches the morning sun. If like many of us the only chance you get to sit out is during the evening then look for an area which is bathed in golden light of late afternoon. Would you like to dine out doors in the evening? Can you make room for a table, and would a patio heater be a good investment, so you can make the most of the setting. If the only area you can place a bench is in baking sun then it’s good to place some sort of overhead structure. It can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Sawn tanalised timbers can be used to make a very simple frame over which you can train a vine or climber. Use galvanised screws and it should last 20 years, providing a delightful place to rest.

My favourite material is wood though mostly this does require ongoing maintenance. I did discover some rather attractive polystyrene slatted furniture on an aluminium frame which looked remarkably like the real deal. ,I ¿ QDQFHV DOORZ \RX FDQ EX\ EHDXWLIXO WHDN wood furniture which requires very little in the way of after care. Try before you buy! Yes you want your furniture to look wonderful but the most important factor is comfort. Are the seats wide enough? Is there enough back support? Does it come with pads? Finally, to bring a touch of indoor comfort and style to an outdoor area I discovered outdoor rugs! Yes really. Made from longlasting material, outdoor rugs can cope with rain or shine. They are made from robust, UHVLVWDQW HDV\ FDUH V\QWKHWLF ¿ EUHV ZKLFK absorb minimal moisture and which dry quickly afterwards. They don’t fade even when exposed to bright sunlight and are cleaned easily by vacuuming, with a broom, or by beating them. I was a sceptic, but I think I’m a convert and bought a little one to place in front of my bench. My dog loves it!

Choose all-weather furniture for ease of use unless you have oodles of storage space for the winter months. Plastic is cheap but can look very tacky. There are some wonderful synthetic wicker style pieces available now though, and excellent metal furniture which requires no care at all.

Tickhill Horticultural Society On Thursday 25th May one of our members Hilary Cartmel, well known locally in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw for her involvement in the arts, provided a very interesting evening widening our knowledge of the range of sculptures placed in various parks around the country but especially in the Yorkshire and Grizedale Sculpture Parks. Thank you Hilary. On Saturday 20th May a group of us enjoyed a day at Renishaw Hall, the historic home of the Sitwell family. The head gardener David Kestavon came to speak to us in May 2016 on ‘The Horticultural History of Renishaw Hall’ and our guide on a tour of the gardens was able to remind us how the gardens have developed over the years and point out the more recent changes planned with David by Mrs. Alexandra Hayward, the current Sitwell in residence. We could see that the 2015 award of the Historic Houses Association Best Garden was well deserved. Our thanks go to Pat Baldwin for her organisation of a very interesting trip. As I write this report members are looking forward to another day out - a visit to Hodsock Priory and gardens. More on that next month. Our July speaker, on 27th, is Jennifer Few from Yorkshire Wildlife Trust with advice on ‘Encouraging Wildlife into your Garden’. The 16-18 Travel Pass can be applied for from 1 July, online at travelsouthyorkshire.com, or via a paper application from an Interchange, and can be used as soon as it is received. Unlike the previous 16-18 Student Pass, card holders are no longer required to reapply for their pass after a year, as the enhanced 16-18 Travel Pass is valid for two years, until 31 July of the young person’s second year in further education, apprenticeship or employment. Prior to the enhancements, only 16-18 year olds in full time education, or classroom based learning over 12 hours per week, were entitled to a 16-18 Student Pass and the concessionary fare entitlement for 16-18 year olds was in line with the academic year meaning it ended each year on 31 July, and recommenced on 1 September and there were often delays receiving these passes as they could not be applied for until schools and colleges were able to give out application codes to their students once registration for the year ahead had been completed - after exam results received in August. 7KHVH FKDQJHV ZLOO PDNH D UHDO GLÎ? ome!’

Dear Friends, ‘Your kingdom come!’. That was the theme for the churches’ prayer sessions during the season between Ascension (25th May) and Pentecost (4th June). A kingdom comes with a monarch. Hence, as we pray to God, ‘Your kingdom come’, we are asking for his reign to be established in our world. God’s Kingdom is established wherever people submit to him as King and carry out his will. In our world, each person is a king or queen in his or her own life. We take decisions to make or break our lives. In most situations, we do not get WKLQJV ULJKW DQG VRPHWLPHV ZH Č´ QG RXUVHOYHV in deep waters. In order to get on with life and enjoy it, I wonder if you may sometimes ask someone for help. Asking for help calls for a humble spirit. You could do so by inviting God to ‘reign over’ every part of your life. This includes your relationship with God, your relationship with other people and your time, resources, and most importantly, your body. Just before Jesus’ ascension to heaven, his friends wanted to know when would be the right time for God to establish his kingdom on earth. Jesus’ response was: “You don’t get to know the time. Timing is the Father’s business. What you’ll get is the Holy Spirit. And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the world.â€? (The Message) God’s Spirit is full of love. His love for us through his son Jesus brought his goodness into our lives. God also expects us to love when he gives us his Spirit. 54 TICKHILL TODAY

Trust Chair Robin Stonebridge said: “Receiving 7KH 4XHHQȇV $ZDUG IRU 9ROXQWDU\ 6HUYLFH represents a tremendous achievement for all RI WKH &KHVWHUČ´ HOG &DQDO 7UXVW YROXQWHHUV SDVW and present, who have dedicated countless hours to promoting the canal and campaigning for its full restoration. We hope that everyone involved, and especially all our volunteers, feel immensely proud of the recognition that this Award represents. The Trust is run entirely by volunteers. These include: • the Work Party, which has restored four locks, built two new locks and restored over a mile of the canal; • the crews of four trip boats, which carried nearly 10,000 passengers last year; • the teams which take out the publicity trailer, run the pop-up cafĂŠ and the shop at Hollingwood Hub. In addition there are towpath rangers, maintenance volunteers, gardeners and DUFKLYLVWV $ JURXS EXLOW 'DZQ 5RVH WKH Č´ UVW new Cuckoo boat for 80 years, using traditional methods only and another group is restoring the Trust’s ex-working boat, Python. Over 150 volunteers helped to run the most recent Festival. 56 TICKHILL TODAY
