Caring for Parents Hello … quick, before last month’s Cause for a Cuppa goes away! I quote … “I HOPE by this time this arrives to you, warmer temperatures would have arrived.” Umm, well … yeah, right. We took our young lad and a mate to Legoland for a few days. Great place to visit … apart from a 4 hour blizzard and coldest day in 20 years. But hey, it was great to just hang out together. We found warm stuff to do! Though Easter temperatures weren’t what we expected, Easter itself was fantastic. One thought struck me more this year than ever before was that while Jesus was on the cross, He made sure His mum had someone to care for her. (If you don’t believe me, check it out … John 19:25-27) That got me thinking about a whole bunch of people that are close to me, either at our church or Messy Church. I would like to honour all you who

go to great lengths to care for your parents in their declining years. I know Jesus was 33-ish when He died so Mary would have probably been in her early 50’s … if that. So Mary was not really a pensioner BUT the point is that as a carer for your parents, you are in great company. Not only did Jesus do it BUT we are commanded to honour our parents (5th Commandment) … and I don’t believe that stops when we hit 18. (Yep … teens are meant to honour their parents but that is a WHOLE other article.) Many of you have done all you can to care for those who cared for you as little children. Some of our friends

are dealing with a parent with cancer. Others are going through the difficult transition of trying to provide care for them at home or if need be, at a specialist home. You spend hours holding a hand, getting cups of tea, talking with doctors … then going home exhausted and still having to sort your own family. It’s all a very difficult adjustment as your parents are ALWAYS SUPPOSED to be there and be strong. You deserve an award, but the BAFTAs don’t have a category for this. But as you do this, you are not only honouring your parents but you are providing an example and legacy to your own children. On behalf of all those who may not be able to speak for themselves, thank you for giving.
