the NOVEMBER 2013 edition

I’m going to spend this month saying No.’ I’ll call it November. - unknown

Having spent time at 2 Conventions since the last magazine, one at the ICC with 1300 business owners and another at a slightly smaller conference centre with over 100 other magazine publishers, I have had a really productive month, working on lots of new ideas. One of the things that I have learned however, is that I cannot do everything! To allow time for some of the things that are important to me, then there are times when I do need to say ‘no’ and not commit myself to things that distract me from what is really important to me. Sometimes we all need to say ‘no’ – but I promise I won’t do it too often! The December magazines will be delivered from 29th November and anything you would like including, should be with me by Friday 15th November. Try not to leave it until right up to the deadline though – the December magazine is always the most popular magazine of the year and demand for space will be great. T

Don’t miss out! I am coming to you with Cause for a Cuppa from deep in the jungles of the USA. Umm, well, from the USA anyway. I have been here for the last month to raise awareness about Messy Church and some funds to carry out some dreams regarding its future. (Messy Church carries on in my absence.)

This has been a unique time of perspective for me. In my 25 years of marriage and children, I have never been away for more than a fortnight at a time. My heart goes out to the military and any whose work takes you away from your family for weeks/months on end. Along with all that goes a new appreciation for what I have and in a very real way ... a sense of loss. I appreciate the opportunity to take Chase to school (the days of him WANTING me to do that are coming to a close ... you been there?) I get to be involved in school life, activities, assemblies and LIFE! My wife told me about a concert at the new venue (Cast) in Donny to which Pheasant Bank Academy was

6 6

ROSSINGTON TODAY

invited. But not only that but Chase was chosen to sing! I was so excited but then realised ... oh yeah, I was 5000 miles away. I briefly considered attaching some wings to the car but it hit me that I would get all muddled as the steering wheel is on the left hand side! Bet I would get some odd looks as well. I am so glad my wife went (thank you Allison & Courtney for going as well!). But it was an event for him in Y5 that will never come around again. I will be there for sure when

the next school event / performance comes but it was a lost opportunity. As a lad growing up, my mum sacrificed and worked so hard for us 4 children. We were always involved in school sports teams (which was and still is a big thing in the States). My favourite was athletics. For whatever reason, she was happy to go along to my brother’s basketball games but never came to watch me run. I didn’t complain but it bothered me. Unless there is ABSOLUTELY no way for you to go watch them sing, dance, run, kick ... go! It speaks volumes to your little lad or lass (or maybe not so little) and communicates “you are important” in a way that words can’t. Thanks for having a cuppa with me. Let’s have another catch up soon. :)

Rock Choir Rock Choir is the largest contemporary choir in the UK with over 16,000 members across the country and there is a thriving Rock Choir in Doncaster!

The choir is doing brilliantly and since starting in September 2011 with just a handful of members we have now approximately 60 members in total. But there must be more people who love music and who would really benefit from being part of Rock Choir. It is open to anyone of any age and ability who just loves music and singing. Members include teachers, solicitors, doctors and nurses through to students so it’s a brilliant way of bringing the community together through song. We meet once a week and learn songs ranging from Abba to Adele and we have so much fun. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and everyone just enjoys coming along and having a good old sing to blow the cobwebs away! We are currently running taster sessions every Monday at Hall Cross Lower School from 8pm – 9.30pm during term time for anyone interested in joining us. Rossington Parish Council - NOVEMBER 2013 As I sit here in the gloom with rain belting down and autumn taking over, I look back, with a warm glow, at the Beer Festival, a rousing, rocking, 100% success. We had 31 real ales, scrumpy, vintage cider and mead accompanied by good music and a trouble free time. The beer tent was full on Saturday night with people sitting outside as well. The cost was also well within budget, which is a bonus. Thanks to the DMBC Area team in helping the gallant few set up the Beer Festival, a sterling effort. The next event is bonfire night. We hope to change the format a bit this year with the bonfire being lit at dusk as usual, then some live music and then the sound and fireworks display, this will be followed by more live music. This will extend the evening a bit, but will also help us, organise the gate better so that there not as big a queue as last year, so get there early to get a good position. The entry price will be the same as last year, £2 for adults and £1 for 15 and under (under 5’s free). The Parish Council need more stallholders for the Xmas Fayre on 13th December from 3.30pm to 6.30pm Booking Forms are available from holmescarr2013@ gmail.com. This year there will only be outside stalls and stallholders have to bring their own tables and weather protection. Area lighting will be provided. A relatively quiet month on the meetings front; with only one query at the Planning Meeting and everything else OK. I have only Parish Council meeting to tell you about. We did discuss the application by the Parish Council for a Community Right to Buy on the Bankwood allotments and other council owned properties. This was looked on as favourable. We also discussed the possible future of the Leisure Centre and Youth Club. The drastic Government cuts £108 million over the next three years may leave them vulnerable. There are no plans to close

Garden View

Winter Sun It was back in August this year when I was walking around Parc de La Tamarita, a beautiful green public space in Barcelona, when I stopped to rest from the heat and to look at a selection of ornately arranged planting beds. It occurred to me that although intensely beautiful, lush, calm and extremely relaxing, this garden had a distinct lack of something we try and cram our gardens full of back at home - flowers. In fact, in this garden there wasn’t a single one. It was a wonderful view that made me think to myself ‘must a garden have flowers in order to be beautiful?’

annual gardening events, but why is it we feel it necessary to pander to the needs of such a fussy lot (the flowers I mean, not the gardeners). The dead heading, staking, pruning, feeding and general titivating we have to do to keep our blooms in peak perfection is time consuming and expensive, but to some I know, a garden without flowers is like a bride and groom without a wedding cake. At this time of year it can be tricky to find a garden with flowers, and as we progress into winter we will find the quest increasingly difficult, which is why we rely on evergreens and the skeletons of structural shrubs within our gardens to provide colour.

Providing structure and form in key positions with elements such as clipped spheres, hedges and cones can look wonderful, and for those to whom these plants are a little too contrived, structure is provided by late flowering grasses such as Stipa gigantea and the wonderful upright group of Miscanthus ... both of course look wonderful when in flower too! T

I know the debate ‘must a garden contain plants to be a garden’ took place earlier this year at one of the

Rossington Main A run of inconsistent results in September fixtures with 3 wins, 3 defeats and a draw during the month. Only one of the wins and the draw occurred in League games and so only 4 points were gained, but we did make progress in 2 Cup competitions and reached the 2nd qualifying round of the national F.A.Vase competition. A crucial 2-1 home win over Appleby Frodingham in the League was followed by an enthralling 3-2 away success at Penistone Church in the Vase. A 6-1 drubbing away at Pontefract on Leger Day halted our sequence, but then we bounced back again in a rousing 4-3 League Cup win versus Louth (a side that had beaten us emphatically in the League only 3 weeks earlier) Two defeats at home followed and then an away goal less draw - how inconsistent is that.... October is busy again with virtually 2 games per week for the 1st team, so Manager Steve Lodge is likely to require a healthy and fit squad of players to see him through so many games. Fortunately our midweek fixtures in October are all at home so this will help with availability of players. The 2nd team currently lead the Premier Division of the Doncaster Senior League after the opening 4 games with 9 points gained from 3 wins. Our only defeat came at Denaby United following impressive home wins over Sutton Rovers (3-2) and Yorkshire Main (6-0) and a 2-1 success away at S. Elmsall. September ended with mixed emotions as firstly vandals broke in to our garage and store-room and stole vital ground equipment, including a sit-on mower which for some unknown reason they then “torched” in the wood 100 yards from the ground, but on a much brighter note and showing the best and true spirit 28 28

ROSSINGTON MWBC Bowling ended in the last week of September as the weather temperatures recovered briefly to finish the playing season on a warm and sunny note, much as it had been throughout a glorious summer. Our B team were champions of their Saturday league, but our A team faltered in the final match of the season losing at Wickersley, who ended up as league winners and condemned us to 3rd spot in a very close finish. Promotion was also narrowly missed by our B team in the Midweek league where they finished in 3rd place. Other respectable finishes in 4th spot went to our A side in the Midweek and the Doubles league and our B team in the Over 60s Doubles. Our internal Cup competitions

were also decided in the closing weeks. Malc Needham defeated Richard Brooke 2116 in the Singles Final. Peter Devine and Terry Chandler were the defeated semi-finalists. The Doubles Final was an even closer affair and went to the final wood. With a lead of just 1 on handicap Eric Teasdale & Eric Bubb won the first 3 ends but were in the end defeated by opponents Bobby & Ray Porter in a match that constantly passed between the pairs. Bobby & Ray Porter 21 Teasdale & Bubb 20. Losing semi-finalists were Chris Simpson & Terry Chandler and Vic Heley & Roy Thompson (deputising for Colin Harris). Final contribution of another successful season is notice of our 2013 A.G.M.- Sunday November 3rd at 11am in the Welfare- (Committee to meet beforehand at 10-30am) T

Wheelers

stellar success

The final J E James League results were in and counted just after going to print last month but I’m happy now to bring news of a stellar (as opposed to Stella) campaign by the village’s riders with 11 of the top 40 positions occupied by members of Rossington Wheelers (7) and Sugarcane Velo (4), Sugarcane with 3 riders in the top 20 counting (including Michael Brammall who was third overall in the individual competition) were third in the team competition, the Wheelers with 3 between 18th and 26th were fifth in the team competition. The competition is expected to further increase in popularity next season with Rossington Wheelers slated to host two events in the competition. Shaun Randall represented the club in the legendary Monsal Hill Climb competition in early October in front of upwards of 800 spectators and took 18 seconds off last years time to finish 40th of 130 entrants brave enough to face the starter. Rossington professional Graham Briggs was narrowly second to the 2012 National Hill Climb Champion – Jack Pullar. To further continue the theme on the racing front congratulations must go Tickhill Velo Club who hosted a closed road criterium event to kick-off the T-Fest music festival in September and it was a massive success. Plans are afoot in the district to expand on this calibre of race on the front and back of next year’s Tour visit to the county. In order to boost its own commitment to

competition Rossington Wheelers has formed a dedicated racing section with its sight firmly set on the 2014 local road racing calendar! Moving into this winter and a number of keener members are looking to compete in Cyclo-Cross events, Paul Jones has already been involved in the Scunthorpe floodlit series and Michael Spencer took on the fearsome 3 Peaks Cyclo-Cross event in October. The Club will of course once again be hosting its annual Cyclo-X-mas event. Sunday 22/12/2013 at The Welfare is the date for your diaries as a high quality field tackles the mixed woodland course.

On the club ride front the Saturday and Sunday rides are still fully programmed into the schedule but mileages and pace do start to drop off along with the temperature. As always details are best found at/or linked from www. rossingtonwheelers.co.uk or by calling in to see chairman Les at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue. Safe riding Brendan Simpson T

Lions Club Bonfire Night As I sit preparing this report it is raining again - I do hope the first weekend of November is not as wet. Our bonfire on the cricket field on Alderson Drive will be lit at 5.30pm on Saturday 2nd November. The evening, organised jointly with Tickhill Cricket Club will continue with two firework displays; the first at 6.00pm and the second after a short interval at approximately 6.45pm The firework display will be on the playing area with excellent visibility all-round the boundary so young children will be able to find somewhere with a good view. Novelties and glow sticks will be available but health and safety rules do not allow the lighting of sparklers and with the Cricket Club bars open, the bringing of your own cans etc will not be allowed.

We would ask everyone to respect the hallowed turf of the cricket field and to please use the litter bins. Entrance is free but Lions will be rattling buckets and, as ever, all the proceeds will go towards deserving causes within the local community. Christmas Draw tickets will be available from mid-November until the draw takes place on Tuesday 10th December and we will be organising a race night at the Top Club in Rossington on Thursday 21st November. On the following Thursday (28th) Lions will be assisting the organisers with erecting the stalls etc for the Late Night Shopping Evening when the Christmas Lights will be switched on and then the month of December will be taken up with showing the district our new Christmas float and bringing Santa to everyone.
