Shed those added extra Christmas lbs!

Welcome to

Join us at

the JANUARY 2015 edition

And so we welcome another year … 2015 I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. By the time you read this it will be the last few days of December or possibly just into January. As I write though it is still 2 weeks until Christmas and I am not really any more prepared for Christmas than I was when I wrote a month ago! Despite having far fewer Christmas commitments this year now that all my children are at secondary school and the days of nativity plays, school carol services and Christmas fairs are over, I seem to be just as busy as ever. I have spent some time during December making plans for 2015 and setting some goals both business and personal. Did you know that goals that are written down have a 95% higher chance of achieving the desired outcome, yet only 3%- 5% of the population have any written goals. It isn’t something I have ever really done before so I will let you know later in the year whether I am a convert! Despite all the planning I am still no further forward with deciding how to celebrate the 10th birthday of Today Publications which is quickly approaching! The February issue will be delivered to you late January. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 16th January. Wishing you a Peaceful 2015.

Enjoy January and I will be back in a months’ time with your February magazine.

Best wishes, Paula x

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association At the meeting of the group on 2 December, Ange Edwards of BDC Environmental Health answered questions put to her by members, and also outlined the role of the Environmental Health Department. There were concerns that rats had been seen in broad daylight on the Wimpey and in other parts of the town. It was stressed that we can all help by disposing of waste food sensibly, and not leaving items of furniture, i.e. sofas and chairs outside, where rats can nest. Bonfires can cause smoke nuisance and can be reported to 01909 533219, also owners of pets who persistently allow dogs to foul pavements and public spaces, and fly-tippers. Householders should be aware that if they pay someone to take away rubbish, they should ask to see his certificate, as, if it is not disposed off in the correct manner the householder could be liable to a fine. BDC are currently running a campaign, “Dob On A Dirty Dog”, and posters can be obtained on the BDC website. The group had enjoyed a trip to the Birmingham Christmas Markets, and also had been very successful at the Town Hall Christmas Lighting event, where we had a tombola stall, a knitting stall, teas and coffees etc, and also hosted the Santa’s Grotto. It was wonderful to see the faces of the children eagerly waiting to see Santa, and hearing about how good they had been! A cheque for £173

had been sent to Bassetlaw Hospice, in memory of our friend Sue Mann. Parking at the Town Hall was mentioned, as it was noted that there were fewer spaces now that the Police had moved in. It was pointed out that if we had not housed them in the annexe we could well have lost the police presence in the town, and more car parking spaces will be addressed within the Neighbourhood Plan. In the meantime this is a small price to pay in order to keep the police in our town. The TRA had been happy to sponsor the “Wiggle Giggle” event at the Town Hall for the younger children, and a member had attended and felt that the little ones had thoroughly enjoyed this. Members were advised to go along to the library and go online at Nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ budget#nottsbudget, where you can have your say on how your money is spent. This is running until 16 January 2015. If you don’t do it, you can’t grumble about how your money is spent. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 6 January 2015, and will be followed by an Internet Café session at the Centre, from 12 noon to 2 pm, and anyone can drop in for a few minutes where help will be on hand for anyone wanting help with internet access, and use of the computer.

Minister Dear Friends,

It’s New Year again and to some of us, it’s a time to reflect upon the past and look forward to the future. Sometimes, some of us find it difficult to know what we need to do to achieve the best in the coming year. I wonder if we can apply the advice the Apostle Paul gave to the Christians in Rome about 2000 years ago. In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honouring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically (Romans 12: 6-9) (New Living Translation). Paul’s advice is that just be yourself and do the good things that you love doing. Sometimes, it may be difficult to do them but Christians believe that prayer helps us to ask for assistance from God. He hears us and helps us achieve what we need to do with his Spirit. You may wonder whether you have to pray for hours or days before God hears. Not at all! Christians believe that prayer is a conversation with God. So as part of being yourself, you can have a frequent conversation with God. It can be a few minutes or hours, depending on your availability. God is always waiting for you to show up. You may wonder whether he will answer. My response is, God’s answer may be “yes, I’ll give it to you now or later”. It may also be “no, it’s not right for you now”. It can be “wait for a while” or a final answer is “have you thought of this better alternative”? This year, as part of your resolution or determination to change things in life for the better, I wonder if I can suggest to you to consider frequent conversations with God. He is waiting for you to show up. Have a blessed New Year.

TICKHILL AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB May I start by wishing you all a Happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our Grand Christmas Draw which was held on 16th December. To the companies who donated prizes, the many people who provided items for the draw, the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the tickets and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets – thank you. If you were one of the many lucky winners then we have probably already been in touch but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we escorted Santa on his new sleigh round most of the roads within the Tickhill and District area giving out hundreds of Christmas cards and receiving many cards and wish lists. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. At Tickhill and District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs so you can be sure that every penny you donate will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year. So, thank you once again from Tickhill and District Lions and from all the people that your donations will help. T

Harworth Medical Centre – Looking to the future! In April 2013 the Riverside Health Partnership based in Retford took over the contract for providing GP services at Harworth Medical Centre. Although Dr Raheem stayed on for a short period he has now retired leaving a new generation of Doctors providing services. This has involved a great deal of change, some of which was not initially welcomed but following a recent patient survey most patients now agree that the changes have brought about much needed improvements.

GP during normal working hours, there will be the facility to use the Retford site for GP access in the early evening.

On taking over at Harworth, Riverside formed a Patient Group so as patients could have a say in what services should be provided at the surgery. If you would like to become a member of the patient group, then please speak to the branch manager at Harworth.

With new houses being built in Harworth and the surrounding areas, there will be an increased need for greater GP access in the future. Currently Harworth Medical Centre has the smallest patient population of the three surgeries based in the Primary Care Centre. However, the Riverside Health Partnership is looking to provide an extra GP at the surgery which will allow for a doubling in patient numbers and easier access. The provision of a regular practice nurse has also brought about benefits to patients, especially those with long term conditions which require ongoing management. Access to female GPs has also allowed for an expansion to Women’s Health Services. Should you need any advice for Family Planning or contraceptive services, Dr Sohal has extensive experience in this area. Harworth Medical Centre currently provides Saturday morning access and it soon hoped that for those who have difficulty accessing the 8

As already stated, there are several advantages to having more than one Doctor provide services at Harworth, one of these being that different GPs have different specialist interest in care. Riverside currently has 7 different Doctors. Below we have listed the ones who work most frequently at Harworth Medical Centre.

Dr Novoa joined the practice in February 2004. He provides a full general practice service to his patients and he is qualified as a GPwSI in Drug Misuse and is the Practice’s Child Protection Lead.

Dr Gopidas joined the practice in April 2008. He provides full general practice services and has a specialist interest in Diabetes.

Dr Hardman has been in the practice for 18 years. He is clinical governance lead for the practice and also a GP appraiser and trainer. As well as a full general practice service, Dr. Hardman offers acupuncture; minor surgery and supports the Child Health Clinic.

Dr. Ho joined the practice 11 years ago. He is Medical Director for Bassetlaw Hospice and is part of Bassetlaw Clinical Commissioning Group. He offers a full general practice service and has developed a specialist interest in Coronary Heart Disease and ENT.

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

Dr Nanthakumar (Female) offers full general practice and has a specific interested in Women’s Health

Dr Sohal (Female) joined the practice in August 2011. She provides full general practice services and runs specialist clinics in female contraception, fitting implants and coils. Dr Sohal is currently training to be a skin specialist. Further information can be found on our website at www.riversidehealth.co.uk

community Hello Everyone and a Happy New Year We hope you had a great Christmas, but here at the sanctuary whether it’s Christmas, New Year or the weekend work has to continue as the dogs and cats still need taking care of. We have had lots of street collections over the Christmas period so thank you everyone that contributed to help make our collections a success. This is a very important part of what we must do in order to survive. Money is always tight, but this year we have noticed a huge difference in the amount of money that comes in. We desperately need to increase our coffers; otherwise we will not be here for the future. One way people can help is to donate a little each month by Direct Debit this will make sure that we can continue with the good work we do here. You can also help by volunteering, there are many ways you can help us either by dog walking, fund raising or take a look at our face book page for other ways of helping us. Would anyone be interested in fostering an elderly dog? We have at least 2 or 3 that just need a loving home to make their last years special. Even though they are well cared for it is still sad to see them end their days in a sanctuary when they have lived most of their lives being someone’s special pet. If you would like to know more please call us. We also have also taken in a lovely white German Shepherd who is around 3 years old. Unfortunately she has had a very bad skin allergy and has no fur on her body at all.

Finding a forever home She is living with a foster carer at the moment and with the correct medication we hope we will soon be able to find someone to love her and give her a permanent home. We have had some wonderful news Sainsbury’s are coming to Bawtry and as well as creating jobs they are making a firm pledge of support to local organisations. We are extremely happy to say our Sanctuary will be one of the first to benefit from this support and we are looking forward to working closely with them. The store is to open on the 8th January and we will be there to wish them well. We would like to thank everyone again for the support they have given us during our Christmas street collections. Please come to see us if you are thinking of adopting a dog or cat and we will be happy to point you in the right direction. A big thank you to all Purple Vouchers office staff Jackie, Julie, Dave, Geoff, Fay and Milly for the support on Santa Dash Sunday. Your support is very important to us. Thank you Our Sanctuary number is 01302 711330 please leave a message and we will call you back.

The NHS Five Year Forward View was published in November this was a joint production by six NHS organisations (Monitor, NHS England, Public Health England, Trust Development Authority, Care Quality Commission, Health Education England), Particularly noteworthy is the lack of any reference to privatisation or competition – neither word appears once in the 40-page document. The document highlights that the biggest challenge to the NHS, beyond debates about money and models, is the behaviour and lifestyle that fuels rising demand. “…the future health of millions of children, the sustainability of the NHS, and the economic prosperity of Britain all now depend on a radical upgrade in prevention and public health. The NHS will therefore now back hard-hitting national action on obesity, smoking, alcohol and other major health risks. We will help develop and support new workplace incentives to promote employee health and cut sickness-related unemployment. “ Also highlighted is the idea that people should have a stronger voice in decisions about their health and care, and that services should better reflect their needs and preferences. This has been a policy goal of politicians and senior policy-makers in health for at least 20 years. Patients want it, and the evidence shows that when they are involved, decisions are better, health and health outcomes improve, and resources are allocated more efficiently.” Implications of this for your GP Practice The Five Year Forward View acknowledges the problems facing primary care, particularly the “severe strain” on general practice but states that any new money will be used to start up initiatives where there are signs of innovation and willingness to change. “One new option will permit groups of GPs to combine with nurses, other community health services, hospital specialists and perhaps mental health and social care to create integrated out-of-hospital care - the Multispecialty Community Provider. The other will see hospitals running the show. “A further new option will be the integrated hospital and primary care provider - Primary and Acute Care Systems combining for the first time general practice and hospital services, similar to the Accountable Care Organisations now developing in other countries too.” You can contact the PPG via the comments boxes in both surgeries or at tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com

New Year, New Home,

New Way

The New Year brings new hope for homeowners looking to make a fresh start and climb the property ladder, as resolutions and post-Christmas blues spur buyers to begin their property search early. Marketing property promptly in the New Year means owners can benefit from the ‘spring bounce’ when sales traditionally increase between March and May. This will be especially true in early 2015, according to recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which demonstrate the strength of the market. Excluding London and the South East, UK house prices increased by 9.1 per cent in the 12 months to September 2014. Graeme Naish, co-founder of Open Door Auctions, a family-run property business specialising in residential sales, comments: “Winter is typically seen as a bad time of year for the property market because of a number of factors - the weather’s bad, money is tight and people are preoccupied with Christmas preparations. Once Christmas is over and the January blues set in, people start thinking about the year ahead, making decisions and taking positive steps forward.” The New Year can provide an opportune time for people looking to sell property, as buyers kick-start their househunting in earnest.

• sĞƌƟĐĂůƐ • ZŽůůĞƌƐ • ZŽŵĂŶ • sĞŶĞƟĂŶƐ • tŽŽĚ sĞŶĞƟĂŶƐ

“Your home can actually be at its most inviting in the winter time and this can have a very positive and inspiring effect on potential buyers,” added Graeme. “There’s nothing better than stepping in from the cold to a warm and hospitable house. January and February are great times for people to market their property.” According to a recent study, buying or selling a house is viewed as the most stressful part of modern life - more stressful than bankruptcy, getting divorced or being made redundant. For this reason, a growing number of people are looking to auctions and other, less traditional channels to achieve a sale. Indeed, in the first six months of 2014, there was a massive 135 per cent increase in sales by auction compared to the first six months of 2013. Competitive by nature, auctions can drive up the price of a property, are legally binding and require deposits to be paid on exchange. Around 75 per cent of properties sold at UK auctions are completed and exchanged within as little as four weeks, much quicker than the national average. In its first two years of business, Open Door Auctions has hosted 20 auctions and sold 250 homes – worth more than £30million to local residents. Companies support Sahara Challenge Local people have been showing their support to charity fundraisers who took on the challenge of a lifetime and trekked the Sahara desert in aid of charity. Rose Topham and her son Edward took on the extreme challenge of walking 100km across the Sahara desert in just five days in support of SAFE@LAST a local charity that supports children and young people who have run away. The trek saw Rose and Edward walking through one of the harshest environments on earth. They took part with 25 other trekkers also supporting the charity and walked up to 28 kilometres a day, slept in shared Bedouin tents and endured extreme desert temperatures – both low and high. Rose and Edward are fundraising for SAFE@LAST which provides services for young people including a helpline, ongoing one to one support for young people and families, education and prevention work and the only children’s refuge in England. They have already raised over £5,500 but hope to exceed this.

Collectively the group of 27 have raised over £57,000. A lot of their fundraising success has been as a result of the generosity of local businesses including Torne Valley of Tickhill and Progressive Safety Footwear Ltd of Sheffield who have supported the trekkers efforts. Rose said “We’re very grateful to everyone that has supported us in a raising a fantastic amount for such a worthwhile cause. We’ve still got a bit to go to reach our fundraising target so I hope people will continue to support us. The generosity of local people and businesses has been invaluable in helping raise such vital funds so SAFE@LAST can continue their work with young runaways.” You can support Rose and Edward by donating to their justgiving pages: http://www.justgiving.com/Rose-Topham http://www.justgiving.com/Ed-Topham T

Garden View

Seeds of Change How many seeds have you eaten today? Probably more than you realise. As a nation, we consume tons of them every day and whether they are ground to make our bread, mushed to accompany our chips or sprinkled on our burger bun, seeds play an important role in our diet … as well as in our garden! Most of the seed heads that were left over from autumn have now fallen over, disintegrated, or been eaten by hungry birds, so as part of my ‘outdoor housework’ I’m cutting them down to ground level before the new growth begins to emerge next month. The stately seed heads of Stipa gigantea looked fantastic for such a long period of time, as did the erect stems of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Forester’, but even these have been defeated by the wind. It may be cold outside, but now is the perfect time for planning what to grow this year, from seed of course! Over recent years the popularity of growing your own vegetables has meant that veg seed sales have overtaken those of traditional flowers, but you really can’t beat the satisfaction of plants from seed. The first plants I ever grew were Snap Dragons. I was fifteen, and I found the packet in the back of a drawer (presumably they had been stuck 20

to a box of cereal at some stage). I diligently followed the instructions for sowing and placed them on top of my wardrobe (I’m not quite sure why I did that). What happened next really was a miracle. They germinated! It was hard to believe that the old seed, uneven layer of compost, wardrobe location and over watered soil, produced a rash of new seedlings. It wasn’t long before they had grown to around 2 inches high and bent towards the light, narrowly avoiding the artex ceiling!

enough energy to push new leaves through the soil. Prick out singly once large enough to handle and grow on somewhere frost-free, before gradually hardening off ready for life outdoors. Until next time, happy winter gardening.

I potted them on and they produced the most beautiful range of colours all summer long, and that was the moment I became hooked on gardening. It wasn’t really a surprise that they germinated, as that’s what seeds are designed to do. They can survive in their dormant state for years, and because there are often more seeds per packet than you know what to do with, I always sow just a few more than I need and return the rest to a sealed container in the fridge. Stored like this they keep for years. To give them the best start in life, most seeds require just a tray of compost and some warmth. Large seeds should be covered over with compost, but small seeds left uncovered as they often don’t have

Anti Social Behaviour in the Area. There have been recent incidents of Anti-Social Behaviour in the Harworth and Bircotes area where groups of teenagers have been throwing eggs at various properties including shops, restaurants and moving vehicles. The police have various powers along with the local council to address these issues. One of the options is that the police have powers to disperse groups where the area can be determined by the police which also includes times as well which is not time specific (this could theoretically be from 6am until 6am the following morning). Along with this any persons under the age of 16 can be taken home by the police and items used to cause antisocial behaviour can be seized. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - JANUARY 2015 READY FOR A NEW YEAR? What will 2015 bring, I wonder? Listening to the Chancellor, Britain is doing better than other European countries, so I hope growth of the economy continues. As a District Cabinet Member with responsibility for Finance, I know the forecast is that all councils and other public services are going to have even tougher times for the next five years, and the challenge will be to continue delivering services but with less and less money in the budget. Bassetlaw District Council has done well so far in having robust financial plans, maintaining valued services to the public, and adjusting fees and charges only in line with inflation in order to cover basic costs. The real price paid and savings made have been in the reorganisation of the Council and loss of staff, though sharing Queens Building’s in Worksop with D.W.P. next year will bring in some extra income and reduce costs. The savings that have to be found by April 2015 is £1.5m, and we know £0.6m must be found for the following year, which is why improving income/ sharing accommodation is so important. Whatever happens to Councils and other public services in the next few years, I do hope that 24

2015 proves to be a good year for the people of Harworth and Bircotes. WHAT A DISGRACE – I FELT ASHAMED I was contacted by the Bassetlaw District Council senior officer in Parks and Leisure about the multi-use games area being installed on the Tommy Simpson Field. He gave me a progress report, and then told me the company constructing the M.U.G.A. had hired a night watchman because of vandalism to their work and their equipment. I could only apologise. Why is it that in Harworth things you try to do for the community become an immediate target? Why can’t we even have a proper Christmas tree that isn’t attacked by vandals, who smash the lights, damage the connections and create a safety hazard? On a positive note, the completed M.U.G.A. really looks the business. I spoke to some

boys playing football there, and they told me it was ‘brilliant’. I was pleased to see a strong concrete pedestal supporting a table tennis top on site, too. Fingers crossed the new games facility will be well used and not abused. HOUSING ON SCROOBY ROAD I and Cllr. Anita Smith attended a small Christmas celebration at Jones Homes on Scrooby Road. The Christmas tree was switched on, mince pies and drinks were available, and new and future residents were made most welcome. The sales staff told me that so far 30 houses are ‘committed’ and they are pleased with the way business is progressing. CHRISTMAS LIGHTING EVENT Thursday 27th November saw the H&B Town Council annual Lighting Event, now a permanent fixture in the calendar. The entertainment started when Santa arrived and over 150 children visited his grotto. Punch and Judy were also in

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - CONTINUED attendance and many stalls raised a large amount of money for charity. The school children also sang Christmas Carols and Harworth Brass Band played for the benefit of all who attended, so a big ‘thank you’ to them. I have to report a few motorists were unhappy because they were forced to park at one of the other local car parks between 07.00 and 19.00. We have to comply with Health and Safety Regulations and the car park has to close; fun fair rides have to be able to arrive and set up, and during the event itself we have a large number of children and their parents present, so it is necessary to prohibit vehicle access for one day in the year. If you don’t agree with this policy of closing the car park for this event, please write to: The Town Clerk Harworth and Bircotes Town Council The Town Hall Scrooby Road, Bircotes, DN11 8JP OFFICIAL OPENING OF NEW POLICE STATION Monday 8th December saw the official opening of the new Police Station, marked by the attendance of Paddy Tipping, Police Crime Commissioner, and several senior ranking officers

from Nottinghamshire Police. I did stress to them that efforts should be made to inform the public that the new station is designed to act as a hub serving other parts of North Nottinghamshire as well as H&B; the people also need to know that the new premises does not have a reception desk and cannot be accessed by the public, just like the Shrewsbury Road station has been for the last two years. The advice is in an emergency ring 999, otherwise ring 101. Would you like to see a reception desk? – I know I would, but the Police have/and still are facing massive cuts to their budget which has seen the closure of many Police Stations across the County – Carlton, The Meadows in Nottingham, and bigger towns than ours e.g. Bingham – are permanently closed; Retford Police Station will eventually close and the Police hope to share accommodation with B.D.C. in Retford.

Yes, some motorists have complained, but as there are 450 free car park spaces within walking distance of the shops is this really such a disaster? Would you support and use another car park on Scrooby Road, if we built one? ROAD WORKS A lot seems to have been happening locally. I woke very early one morning to find two very large pieces of road-making equipment parked opposite my bungalow, followed by the later appearance of traffic lights – nothing new to anybody using Scrooby Road in recent months. So Mayfair Close has been re-surfaced, as has the street connecting Bawtry Road with East/West Street- at last! I am pleased to see that the zebra crossing on Scrooby Road now has Belisha Beacons that are wired up and flashing.

Driving to Worksop I noticed the aerial flight had disappeared one weekend; like The Police Station on me you may have heard a series Shrewsbury Road was in danger of explosions late one Saturday of closing and the Town Council night. This is a clear signal for was so concerned that we chose further clearance work on the to work in partnership and colliery site. ensure the Police stayed. community some communities will have less frequent services, though H&B is not affected. You may wish to look at the N.C.C. website to check this is so, further comments have to be made by 9th Jan. 2015 MY PROBLEM I make no secret of the fact that I, like many others, suffer from epilepsy; fortunately for me this is well controlled by a recognised drug. For some reason the manufacturer has caused patients and pharmacists a headache by limiting the release of this drug, and one Sunday in December saw me phoning the emergency doctor service and requesting a prescription be faxed to a pharmacy in Doncaster that is open 7 days a week. I was frantic because I was down to my last tablet despite the best efforts of my local branch; the situation was saved as the doctor complied with my request and the pharmacist gave me the last 2 weeks supply he had in stock. However, whilst parking in Doncaster I did notice the parking fee was £2 per hour, 7 days a week, 24 hours per day. How do you go shopping and get back to the car in one hour? I estimate it costs on average £4 per car per stay; I think if this happens again I will try Worksop – much cheaper!
