Welcome to the May 2015 edition

I am sure it won’t have escaped your notice that there is an election this month. While this magazine isn’t of a political nature, we are pleased that several of the local candidates have chosen the magazine as a way of communicating with you, their electorate. All contacted me directly and chose to spend some of their marketing budget! As soon as last months magazines went to print I set about emptying my kitchen and ended up with boxes piled high in the garage and my study and by the time the magazines arrived from my printers my old kitchen had been stripped of the old cupboards. The magazines and all of their accompanying leaflets were sorted from the corner of the kitchen surrounding by large boxes containing the new kitchen cabinets and various new appliances! Good job the weather remained dry as we also had boxes of magazines all over the driveway! The kitchen is now complete apart from a little decorating that will be done as soon as I have this magazine to print. Andy and David of AJ Installations have done a fantastic job, looking after all aspects of the refit and helping to ensure everything went smoothly with as little disruption as possible. A big thank you also to Stuart at DC Interiors for all his design input; helping me include the features I really wanted, home visits checking on progress and the supply of a beautiful kitchen which maximises the space available. I’ve only waited 10 years to get this kitchen!

The June issue will be delivered to you late May. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 15th May.

Enjoy May and I will be back in a months’ time with your June magazine.

Best wishes, Paula x

VOTE LOCAL - VOTE GREEN - VOTE KELLY CONNOLLY - 7th MAY Hello Residents of Bawtry! My name is Kelly Connolly, and I am your Green Party th Candidate for the local elec ons on May 7 2015. Having lived in Rossington all my life, I am now raising my own family here. I feel I have what it takes to represent our community and make the right decisions for the good of us all. In my work as a rela onship and children’s counsellor, I am o en faced with challenging situa ons. This experience will stand me in good stead to face some of the difficult decisions that are required to make our village a be er place.

Kelly Connolly

Whilst gaining experience of helping families I have seen all too o en, the struggles and difficult choices families have to face on a daily basis just to survive. With loss of earnings, closure of important community projects that support families, as well as an increase in the cost of transport and other important public services.

Why the Green Party? One of the reasons I have chosen to stand with the Green Party is because the Green Party is opposed to the failed economics of austerity.

Why are the Green Party against austerity? The other major poli cal par es in this elec on are choosing to advocate a con nua on of the failed economics of austerity. Austerity a acks the poorest and most vulnerable in our society and hacks away at our public services. Since 2010 Doncaster has had £93 million cut from its budget, that’s £305 for every man woman and child in the borough. Our public services are strained to the limit, incomes are barely rising and too many of our people depend of food banks to survive. This has to change! In Doncaster we need the minimum wage to be the living wage. This not only helps individuals and families but supports local businesses by increasing the spending power of the community. If elected I will fight for the change we all need.

Don’t choose austerity - vote for change - Vote Green on 7th May 2015.

VOTE for Kelly Connolly for Rossington and Bawtry. As your local Candidate I would be pleased to hear from local residents about any concerns or anything you would like support with.

VOTE GUY ASTON VOTE UKIP The game is on. The establishment par es are promising you morsels again… it must be elec on me. However, before you vote you may wish to consider the following.

Who asked you? The EU now controls 65% of rules and regula ons in the UK. We are seeing a stream of immigra on at a level of 300,000 per year — no wonder our services are under such pressure, not to men on the homes shortage. Our poli cians have borrowed so much that the interest on what we owe is greater than the whole of the UK Defence Budget (£55 thousand million). Yet ask yourself the ques on; did poli cians ever ask us, the people, if this was what we wished for? Well, did they? The truth is plain: ¡

They do not listen to the people

¡

They do not speak for the people

¡

The EU will not let them act for the people

UKIP will fight to leave the European Union, restoring full sovereignty to the UK Parliament and the people of the UK. A UKIP government would listen as we believe that the best people to govern Britain are the Bri sh people. Admission £10 at the door with the exception of our subscription members Children under 16 free when accompanied by an adult. Students (16-19) free Our new season begins on 18th September with an organ recital by David Houlder in St. Mary’s Church.

FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH. For the superstitious the date means bad luck, but for Tickhill Music Society it meant a splendid concert. The artists were James Turnbull (oboe and cor anglais) and Libby Burgess (piano) and they made an excellent team. The programme had a neat arrangement with pieces by six British composers sandwiched between a Dane and a German. This year is the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Carl Nielsen and so the concert began with two of his Fantasy Pieces, ‘Romance’ and ‘Humoresque’. The contemporary English composer, Jonathan Dove, wrote his ‘Music for a Lovelorn Lenanshee’ for the Park Lane Group and featured a staccato piano and a jerky oboe with numerous repetitive phrases. Next came a piano solo ‘In a May Morning’ one of three pieces from ‘Sarnia’ ( which refers to Guernsey), sensitively played. The first half closed with Six Studies in English Folksong by Vaughan Williams. Originally written fot the cello it was here played on the cor anglais. The second half began with ‘Soliloquy’ by Elgar which did not seem to have many Elgarian ‘fingerprints’. Richard Rodney Bennett gave us ‘Two Country Dances’ (from a set of four), the second being engagingly perky. The Gerald Finzi ‘Interlude’ dates from the 1930’s and was originally meant to be part of an oboe quartet never completed. Finally two movements from Mendelssohn’s ‘Songs without Words’, written for the piano but here arranged by a French oboist, the first being a Gondoliers’ Song and the second a virtuoso ‘Bees’ Wedding’ played with lightning fingering. The delighted audience insisted on an encore and so the concert ended fittingly with ‘Evensong’ by Schumann. Throughout the music had been sensitively partnered by an unobtrusive but supportive pianist. Altogether a very satisfying evening.

Methodist Minister Dear Friends, There is a story of a black South African woman who stood in an emotionally charged courtroom listening to white police officers acknowledge the atrocities they had perpetrated in the name of apartheid. Officer van de Broek accepted that he was guilty for the death of her son. He and his police friends had shot her eighteen-year-old son at point-blank range. They partied while they burned his body, turning it over on the fire until it was ashes. Eight years later, this same policeman and his friends arrived to seize her husband. Hours later, van de Broek came to fetch the woman. He took her to a woodpile where her husband lay bound. She was forced to watch as they poured petrol over his body and ignited the flames that consumed his body. The last words her husband said were “Forgive them.” As van de Broek stood awaiting judgement, the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission asked the woman what she wanted. The woman stated, “Mr. van de Broek took all my family away from me, and I still have a lot of love to give. Twice a month, I would like for him to come to the ghetto and spend a day with me so I can be a mother to him.” That was not all. She added, “I would like Mr. van de Broek to know that he is forgiven by God and that I forgive him, too. I would like someone to lead me to where he is seated so I can embrace him and he can know my forgiveness is real.” As the elderly woman was led across the courtroom, van de Broek fainted. The story of Good Friday rings a bell in this story. Jesus was tortured and crucified amongst two thieves. Whiles dying on the cross, he said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23: 34). I wonder who has offended you and how you’re dealing with the situation. Yes, humanly speaking, you want to break even with the person but what happens afterwards may be devastating. Other people would want to keep the hurt in themselves and bear the brunt of anger and hatred. That is not the spirit of the Easter season. At Easter, Christians believe that God in the form of his Son Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead after the third day. Through that we are liberated from sin and all its clutches. We are forgiven when we confess and repent from our shortcomings. We can therefore come to God and ask him to help us forgive those who have offended us. We can also ask him to help us ask for forgiveness from those we have offended. As you celebrate Easter, I wonder if I can suggest to you to consider reconciling with people who have offended you in the past so that you may have the peace you need in your life. Have a blessed Easter season.

community y meow!

Hello everyonee g thank ank and a big he response you for the we have had from last month’s feature. We have had some lovely people asking if they can help with fundraising, so that is a start. However we are not out of the woods yet and money is still tight. We are trying to attend as many of the fund raisers that we can over the summer months but we are still short of people to man stalls etc. Even though most of us work our holidays around our fundraising we are still in need of more volunteers. Could anyone man stalls for us at the events below. You would have to collect enough bric a brac (maybe from friends and family) to make money from a tombola stall, or if anyone has any other ideas that would work that would be fine. Otherwise we will have to decline these events. We have so many events being offered to us and we could do without declining them, but unfortunately we need volunteers.

Finding a forever home

Our Sanctuary has a small area in reception that you can purchase dog beds, toys, leads, harness’s and lots of other interesting bits and bobs. So even if you are not looking for a cat or dog please come up to our reception area and take a look at the numerous things on offer. There are really beautiful dog beds ranging from £5 to £15 pounds so come up and take a look. Now a little about our lovely dogs and cats. We still have Tia the chocolate Lab with a skin complaint that has given her bald patches but she is looking much better now and is the friendliest girl. We also have Olive the beautiful Springer Spaniel who is just longing for a new home of her own.

6th June Ranskill Primary School Festival 14th June Clumber Park, Fun Dog Show 12th July Town Fields Gala at Doncaster

So if you have any idea’s we will be happy to support you with literature and a gazebo. You will need a folding paste table as our tables will not go into a car. Unfortunately we have had to close our shop in the Manton area of Worksop but we are hoping to move our shop into Worksop itself in the not too distant future. We are also looking for volunteers to man our new shop. If this is to be a success we need the shop to be open 6 days a week, so if you have an odd day in the week or on a Saturday that you could give up to help us please let us know. We also need good quality items or unwanted gifts to fill the shop, so if you are having a change of decor and spring cleaning, please donate to us it will give us such pleasure to see our new shop full of quality items.

Jack the Jack Russell is still with us. He came in with his friends but they were rehomed immediately, it is so sad to see his little face week after week he desperately need a home full of love and cuddles . He is however a typical Jack Russell with attitude.

We re-homed May a beautiful black and white short haired cat 3 years ago, but unfortunately her mummy has gone into a Hospice she is very sad and needs another caring forever home.

2nd May: A Tombola (with a difference) will be held outside the Parish Room Tickhill on Scarecrow Festival Day. Please come along and say hello (and win something special!) 9th May: We are holding a Table Top sale at the Community Centre on Doncaster Road in Bawtry (just past the children’s nursery coming into Bawtry) Tables are limited and are £10 each. There will be tea and cakes to purchase. 17th May: We are holding our annual Sponsored Dog Walk in Bawtry Forest. Please call us for sponsor forms. There will be refreshments to purchase too. This is usually a beautiful fresh morning so bring your walking shoes and enjoy a walk before your Sunday lunch. 11th July: We will be rattling buckets on the streets of Doncaster so please come along and say hello. 12th July is our annual Fun Dog Show at Tithes Lane Tickhill, we all love this event as we are able to see lots of dogs that we have re-homed. If anyone would like to help with any event please call us 01302 711330 and just leave a message.

Please remember now the sun has at last appeared and I know we are all really happy to see the sunshine please remember don’t leave your beloved dog or cat in a hot car.

Braithwell Church & Country Fair SATURDAY 6TH JUNE 2015 The Church and Country fair, a wonderful blend of village fairs from yester year, combined with a modern outlook, but not overly commercialised. There’s something for everyone, family entertainment, Live music from Maltby Miners Band and “The Beats”, Crafts, Paintings, Gillian Banks Theatre Group, Children’s face painting, Cakes, Model Planes, Classic cars, Military vehicles, Farm machinery, Sheep shearing, Livestock ,(including the now much talked about sheep racing) plus many other stalls and attractions. Football, Bowling and Golf competitions Refreshments, Ploughman’s lunches, Hotdogs and a Licensed bar. Grand Draw with First Prize £100.00 plus many other prizes. Returning after their popularity last year we have the “Hawks Of Steele” Falconry experience for all ages.

BAWTRY WI. In March we had a very interesting talk, slides and a video by Richard Bell about the SANDHOUSE. A house carved out of sandstone by a Victorian businessman. It was a huge house and even had a ballroom. Tunnels were also carved out in the sandstone with animal carvings and characters. Alas, there is no trace of it now (apart from the photographs) as it was demolished and covered over by a new road near Balby Bridge. This month we have our Resolutions Night when we will be discussing the 7 topics, whittled down from 51. One will be chosen by the WI nationally to lobby for. In May we have Knickers, A Brief History with Janet Stain.

Bawtry Residents Group

This May presents an opportunity for change in Bawtry. With all of the current town councillors having to stand down and, apparently, several new people putting their names forward (including 4 from the newly formed Residents Group) it seems that there will be a Town Council election on 7 May. This has not happened in Bawtry for many years, and gives the electorate the opportunity to have a say in shaping the future of their town by effecting some change in the ‘make up’ of the Town Council. So it is important to make your vote count. The Residents Group was formed at the end of last year because of the disillusionment of many residents with the lack of action with many issues, and the perceived lack of vision for the town from the Town Council. It is believed that there is a need to actively engage with the community and to move the town forward for the benefit of all. All relevant groups need to work together with the aim of achieving improvements in the town. The Residents Group is trying to facilitate these actions. The Group is steadily growing in numbers, and meets on a bimonthly basis (on the last Thursday of the month). The next meeting will be on 28 May at 7:30 pm in the Crown Hotel (Leger Suite). If you are a resident of Bawtry, and care about your town, then please come along to the meetings. Also, importantly, ensure that you use your vote on 7 May. T

Bawtry Garden Club The April meeting was a huge success with our largest attendance to date. We had a slideshow and very informative talk on plants for dry/ shaded conditions by Andrew Ward from Norwell Nursery, Notts. The group meet next on Tuesday 5 May at 7 pm at the New Hall, Station Road, Bawtry. The topic is Willow Weaving by Lou Hartshorn. A warm welcome guaranteed to members and visitors. For further information please contact Sylvia on 01302 719015 T

Leonard Bernstein’s jazzy Chichester Psalms and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue are also featured. Dr Simon Lindley conducts with vocalists Debra Morley and Phil Willcox leading the line-up. Tickhill & District Lions Club The fifth Tuesday of the month has historically featured a social event with wives rather than a business meeting and on 29th March twenty nine of us enjoyed a meal, a general knowledge quiz and a chat at the Three Tuns in Stainton where the 63rd of our 65 Giant Easter Eggs was raffled off, and won by Lion Ken Green. Our sincere thanks are due to all the bars, clubs, restaurants and retail outlets which took one or more of our Easter Eggs and especially to all of you who supported the draws for those eggs. Your support, whether for the Christmas Float or any other fund raising initiative means a lot and is great encouragement to Lions in our efforts to provide help when we can. You will be aware that we aim to use the bulk of the funds available to assist local welfare projects and initiatives, but, just like our Government donating a percentage of GDP on foreign aid, we are aware that around the world serious tragedies occur and in many areas acute sickness is rife. Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) is an organisation supported by Lions Clubs which maintains a reserve of cash enabling it to assist urgent problems immediately rather than waiting to raise funds . Funds donated by Lions Clubs like ourselves also help to restore sight to over 3000 people round the world daily through cataract surgeries and have prevented serious vision loss for more than 30 million. 271 million treatments for river blindness have been provided through the building or expansion of 660 eye care hospitals and clinics and the treatment of many thousands of eye specialists and eye health workers. LCIF is therefore worthy of a little help from all of us.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES On Friday 26th June we are holding a “Summer Bash 2015” in a marquee behind the Scarbrough Arms, featuring live music, good food and real ales served in a private bar. An evening for music lovers and Lions supporters not to miss. Tickets will be £20 with all proceeds to be donated to the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. Milk kitchen installed at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice by DC Interiors A separate kitchen has been installed at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice so that children’s milk can be stored and prepared in one place. The milk kitchen allows nursing and support staff in the Care Team at the North Anston based hospice to store and prepare feeds for children who cannot eat food. The kitchen means that staff can prepare the feeds in one dedicated place, ready to give to children in the hospice’s care. Previously, milk was stored and prepared in the hospice’s pharmacy. Sarah Branson, Care Team Manager, said: “Many of our children require specialist feeds and all have different amounts at varying points throughout a day. It is really important for us to have this dedicated milk kitchen for space and storage and many other reasons – including best practice.” Bluebell Wood has a specialist team of care staff which supports children and young people with a shortened life expectancy, both in their own homes and at the hospice. The team looks after children with a vast range of complex medical needs, offering short breaks, day care provision, community support and end of life treatment and care. As it costs £3m a year to run the charity’s vital services, DC Interiors, a company with premises in Maltby, Rotherham, and Edenthorpe, Doncaster, provided and installed the kitchen completely free of charge. Stuart Allen, of DC Interiors, said: “We are delighted to be able to give something back to the community and it’s great to know it’ll make a positive difference. This is one of the bigger charity projects we have carried out recently and we are proud to be supporting Bluebell Wood in this way.” T

Our message is to value food, value people. Food brings us together in a unique and powerful way. All too often we are isolated undervalued and undernourished physically and spiritually by our way of life. We aim to change that. We need volunteers and we need supporter/backers/sponsors to get our project firmly of the ground. We need a venue we can use regularly, and maybe someone out there has a space empty at the weekends or evenings and we can split our pay as you feel donations? Maybe there are farmers who are saddened to leave their crops rotting in the fields because they weren’t quite right for a supermarket order? Maybe there is t-shirt printer who will donate us some of our own t-shirt merchandise to raffle? Maybe there is an old building somewhere we could purchase cheaply and we can start a fundraiser and renovate it too? We have had a lot community support so far, from embroidered aprons to a website designed and built and even a food hygiene course for 5 volunteers. We have hosted a cafe event in already used business and a dinner event at a community cafe and will continue with our mission this way. People really want to make this happen with us and believe in our message so we are aiming to reach as many as possible. Please like and share our social media pages and do get in touch. HORSES AND HUMANS A Winning Combination! It was great to see our fabulous Bawtry Courtyard Farmers Market so busy on Easter Saturday as the weather finally showed signs of spring in its step! This is the second year that we have hosted the markets and we are delighted to tell you that we have a new market manager, Bawtry resident Kim Wattam (25), who is giving her time out of the goodness of her heart to make sure the markets this year are bigger and better than before. Remember, it’s the first and third Saturday of every month. We look forward to seeing you soon. And if you are interested in taking a stall please contact Kim on kimwattam07@hotmail.co.uk or 07468 532515. Everything is in place now for our fourth annual Visit Bawtry Race evening and we hope to welcome many businesses, guest and residents of Bawtry to Doncaster Racecourse. Businesses who are sponsoring races on the day are Crown Hotel, Portland Autos, Robinsons of Bawtry, China Rose, Fine & Country, Caviars Restaurant and Wine Bar/Hydro Active Pools & Spa and 31 Market Place Cocktail Bar & Bistro. And, if a packed race card wasn’t enough, the legendary South Yorkshire band The Human League – with hits such as Don’t You Want Me Baby and Together in Electric Dreams - is playing live after racing. If a different type of horseback sport is more your cup of tea, we’ve got our annual Visit Bawtry Polo Cup Day which takes place a little earlier than usual on Sunday 5th July at the Vale of York Polo Club, Misson. This is always a superb event where we raise money for the Aurora Cancer Charity. We’ll tell you more information next time. Don’t forget that you can find out lots of information from our website www.visitbawtry.com, follow us on Twitter @visitbawtry and like us on Facebook /bawtryretailassociation. T

garden view

Chelsea 19th - 23rd May

The Chelsea Flower Show is to gardening what the Paris catwalks are to fashion.

By Rachel Leverton Paris fashions may seem outlandish, but they push certain trends, which in a watered-down version end up in high-street shops. Likewise, though many of Chelsea’s show gardens are fantasy pieces which demonstrate outrageous ideas, the horticultural trends on display will find their way into our own more modest plots. For example; did you know that bonsai specimens and topiary gardens were introduced at Chelsea in 1913? Rock gardens were introduced in the 1940’s and decking in the eighties. All of these can now be bought in garden centres up and down the land. In 2006 James Dyson even produced a water feature in which the water ran uphill. Actually I’m still waiting for my garden centre to stock one of those! Maybe one day... Chelsea isn’t just about high fashion though; it reflects environmental trends too. In recent years there have been hosepipe bans in the great Pavilion and many of the gardens have showcased drought-tolerant planting schemes. Chelsea draws over 150 000 visitors each year. For the past ten years it’s been held over five days instead of four, such is its popularity. 42

BAWTRY TODAY

The sheer quantity and varieties of plants on display to the general public is breath-taking. Chelsea really is window-shopping at its finest. It’s like walking through a real-life version of the best garden design catalogue in the world. And if you visit on the last day you don’t have to restrict yourself to window shopping. At 4pm precisely a bell rings and the great Chelsea sell-off begins. The poor designers, after all their hard work, begin the mammoth task of dismantling their creations. The good news is that the public can buy them. It’s perfectly possible to end up owning a little piece of a prize winning garden. So what should you choose? If it were me I’d want something special; a reminder of my visit. I’d go for a species which I know would grow in my garden, but an unusual variety, not available in my local garden centre. In my case it would probably be an unusual lavender or fuchsia. Choose carefully and you could have a little piece of Chelsea gold adorning your plot for many years to come.

LITTER. Every week in Bawtry we pick up the equivalent of 4 wheelie bins of litter from the floor, plus more which people dispose of correctly in the bins provided. 1000`s of cigarette ends, cans bottles paper etc. WHY. Well people do not seem to care and although fines can be given it is very rare. Dog mess is also a problem, and would you believe it, mainly in the children’s playing field. Please clean up after your dogs. It would also help if people secured the litter they leave for recycling, i.e., put the lids on green boxes and bag and tie other rubbish. On windy days the streets are often littered with paper etc. and it is so easy to put a lid on.

Misson & Springs WI On Wednesday 25th March Carol and Marjorie from Winthrop Park near Rotherham entertained us with The Story of Afternoon Tea. They gave us a brief history of the ritual of afternoon tea. Accounts of teas enjoyed in places as far apart as London and Dubai were interspersed with anecdotes and tales from the past which had members nodding in recognition at memories of their grandmothers and the myriad uses of their aprons and rolling pins. We were then invited to sample delicious mini cakes which Carol had baked for us. There were three types to taste and a quick survey put the Lemon and Orange Victoria sponge cake first with the Chocolate Butter Cream cake and Apricot Viennese Whirls in joint second place. Our next meeting will see us elect a new President at the Annual Meeting on Wednesday 29th April which will be followed by a members’ evening to include a Beetle Drive. In May, we will welcome Meryl White who will talk about her grandmother and her book Grandma Abson’s Traditional Baking. We would love you to join us; please contact our President, Joanna Phillips on 07747443374 for more information, or turn up on the last Wednesday of every month, at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson, where you will be made very welcome. We always make sure that we have time for a chat and our excellent catering team provides an endless supply of refreshments, which includes (more) home-made cakes. T

Our first meeting was held on Thursday 26 March in Clayworth Memorial Hall. We were pleased to welcome our own amateur Local History “expert” and Evacuee Association founder Mr Roffey, who opened our first meeting. Speaking of his life experiences. Not so much a “Who do you think you are”, but a more, “ How Did I Get To Here”. A piece of Clayworth modern local history. It is to be hoped that more of Clayworth residents will share their experiences. At our next meeting we shall formulate a loose plan of a programme. The group will discover Clayworths’ older history, from Romans just marching through, the eventual forming of a settlement at Clayworth, to the Clayworth of today. Sharing its architectural heritage, social history, agriculture, locality and of course the anecdotes and memories of all who now live in Clayworth.

I recently collected 6 large bags of assorted rubbish from Gainsborough Road near the river. Many Animals suffer and die from eating rubbish, from being poisoned, blocked digestive systems etc., not just wild animals but also farm animals and Horses. Take responsibility and try to keep Bawtry tidy. A clean Town is a better town for everyone to enjoy.

CLAYWORTH LOCAL HISTORY GROUP

We will meet at 7.00pm on the last Thursday of the month at the newly refurbished Memorial Hall. When the weather is clement we shall on occasion explore our own village by walking the old pathways and discovering what is left of our long history. Our next meeting will be Thursday 30 April 2015 at 7.00pm at Clayworth Memorial Hall.

Pastor’s Page “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”, so said Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr, a 19th century French journalist. Are you looking forward to having a different government for the next 5 years, or, like Karr, do you have a world-weary lack of expectation of great change regardless of who our Prime Minister ends up being after 7 May? Regardless of who wins the election, we can be sure that some taxes will go up, our public services will not be restored to what they were 10 years ago and some of those in power will be found to act less than honourably. We can expect some election promises not to be upheld and that at least one of the main parties will change their leader, great things being expected of their successor. However, perhaps we will find some in the new government who will surprise us with their integrity, passion for our society and who will inspire us all to work hard, to care for those in need and to play our part in building our country; a person of power who is consistently fair and decent in their public and private lives, someone who leads by example. Perhaps. I have to remind myself that politicians are generally men and women who are prepared to work 80 hours a week, to face constant criticism, to spend most of their working life semi invisible in dreary committee meetings, to travel for hours to and from their constituency and who face nothing but complaints in their surgeries when they get there. Given their management skills, most of our MP’s could earn a lot more money for a lot less stress in private business and yet they choose to be in politics. So, let’s heed the instruction of St Paul when he urges us to give thanks for our political leaders and be very grateful that it isn’t me who has to decide which fighter jets to buy, which drugs the NHS should prescribe, which new roads to build, or even whether beer should go up (or even down) by a penny a pint – I would only get it wrong, and far worse than the professionals.

Newsletter Bawtry Town Council - MAY 2015

Bawtry Town Council - ANNUAL REPORT- 2014/2015 This report covers the period 1st April 2014 to 31st March 2015 The year commenced with a full contingent of members of 13 (12 elected 1 co-opted) but lost John Walsh in mid September who resigned due to personal reasons. We will continue with 12 members up to the elections in May this year. Our grateful thanks to our Clerk Jennifer Worthington for has worked tirelessly to support the council over the year. We would also give our thanks to our handymen Paul Vallows and David Shaw for their outstanding work in looking after all BTC sites and the streets of Bawtry. We give grateful thanks to Councillors Terry Ashurst, Wayne Phillips and Alex Wright, as they are not standing for re-election, for their valuable contributions over the years on Bawtry Council. Your Town Council has given observations on over 50 planning applications and licensing applications to DMBC who are the planning authority and licensing decision makers. Following a 3D survey carried out by Tesla for IGas (Drilling and production of oil and gas wells on and off shore) your council is represented on a Community Liaison Group (CLG) consisting of local parish and town councils across the region. Even though we have been assured that there will be no drilling operations under or near Bawtry we consider possible traffic movements to be of concern and also we are there in support of our neighbouring Parish and Town Councils. The operators IGas have attended meetings and given early notice of their intentions and plans. As we published earlier IGas have applied for planning permission to drill two exploration wells at a site at Misson Springs North of Misson and have published an environmental impact scoping document which we have lodged a copy of in Bawtry Community Library. We will continue to monitor the progress of this activity. Parish precepts are still held at £26000 for the coming year for the 12th year running, whilst the 54

DMBC have increased their base council tax by 2%, we have been able to keep our precept low due to other income mainly from the Market Hill car park. Last year Government cuts on local authorities resulted in DMBC and a Boundary Commission Review which concluded that, despite objections from your town council and many members of the public, they would group Bawtry with Rossington as a Ward. This will mean that we will have three ward members to represent this ward and their elections will be on 7th May. We give thanks to our present ward councillors Barbara Hoyle, Bob Ford and for their efforts and in particular to James Hart who has done much for Bawtry but will be standing in Tickhill at the next election. The Town Council continues to make representation to DMBC on issues that they control in Bawtry for speed limits, potholes, the state of the footpaths, signage and highway matters in general. These matters, although DMBC have constraints imposed upon them, tend to be slow to come to fruition. Kerbing changes have again been requested at the junction of Tickhill Road and the High Street but again with no positive outcome. Issues of inconsiderate and irresponsible parking are reported but, although DMBC do respond, they are often slow in that response. On Saturday and Sunday 5th & 6th of July a charity event “Bonjour Bawtry” was held to coincide with the timing of the Tour De France stages in Yorkshire. The event was held on the area previously occupied by Morris’s Fruit & Veg Kiosk organised by Aurora Wellbeing Centres with static cycles. The event was very professionally organised by Peter Bradley from Aurora and his team and was a great success enjoyed by all the teams and well supported by the people of Bawtry and beyond. We also wish to thank Martyn Attwood of excel parking for his help and support of the event. The event was started by our local MP, Caroline Flint and Bawtry Mayor Sandy Young with Councillors Walsh and Calzini taking part with their own teams. 22 teams from schools and business took part over the two days and were very competitive. Bawtry Town Council - MAY 2015 - Continued the teams had very good sponsorship from friends and colleagues and one had already been promised £2000 from a variety of sources. Other events on market hill included a transport rally from market hill to the Respect field at Hawks Nest where members of the public were transported to the field in a variety of vehicles to raise awareness of respect and to raise funds for the “Help for Hero’s Charity”.

well established with some 80 volunteers ensuring that the residents from Bawtry and further afield have access to books, publications, information and the use of computers and the internet. The monthly coffee mornings are a great success with up to 90 people attending and enjoying the event. Bawtry Community Library is seen to be a shining example of how to run a community library and this would not be possible without our excellent volunteers and we give our grateful thanks for their contribution.

Christmas Lights Switch on - We thank the Bawtry Retail Association and in particular Becky the Chair, Excel Parking and Roger Tuby for organising such a wonderful afternoon and evening on Friday 28th November to coincide with the switch on of Christmas lights in Bawtry .

The Bawtry allotments are very well used and there is a waiting list for allotments which are no longer required. Our thanks go to Councillor Winter for his efforts in maintaining the area and overseeing the running of it.

To Quote Becky “It was an excellent event that was about the entire family, children of all ages enjoyed the many different attractions from fairground rides to brass bands, Elsa from Frozen, market stalls and of course the shops that stayed open late, Santa, a polar bear, and the wonderful Womack’s display widow with pipers.

Bawtry War Memorial. - After long discussions regarding the site of the memorial the council are in negotiation regarding moving the memorial to a safer site near the library and refurbishing it at the same time. This has come about due to the change of ownership of Bawtry Hall and safe access to the memorial. We will consult all interested parties regarding this initiative.

This was the Bawtry retailers associations way of saying thank you to residents and customers alike as without them we would not be here and this is what helps keeps Bawtry such a pretty lovely and vibrant town. Big thanks to excel parking and Bawtry Town Council for their support for this event which would not have happened without them.” We have again requested SYPT for bus shelter on the High Street near Walker’s Solicitors but funding restrictions have prevented this so the request will be carried over to 2015-16. BARS and MSG. We are still awaiting a contribution from S106 monies of some £35000 from DMBC which was promised as a contribution to the bid for a new Pavilion and sports facility on the field. The field is very well used for football, cricket, bowls and other organisations. BARS continue to support the Wharf Street play area which is very well used throughout the week. BARS also organise the annual sports day and we thank them for their efforts.

Due to the Government Localism Act which, potentially, gives local town and parish councils more power to decide upon the future shape of their community on planning matters. To this end Bawtry Town Council has agreed to setting up a group of interested individuals to produce a Neighbourhood Development Plan to take this matter forward. If any Bawtry residents are interested in being involved with this group please contact David Kirkham, 15 Pemberton Grove, Bawtry, Telephone 07703 804699. Gainsborough road toilets. - Gainsborough Road toilets were recently vandalised and defaced again. They have been cleaned up but the council is keeping a watching brief and will consider closing them on health and safety and economic grounds if the damage is repeated. Tunnel Tech. The odour problems from the site at Misson seem to have reduced but further legal action is expected from Bassetlaw District Council in the near future.
