Hours of FUN! Childrens Parties

Welcome to

the August 2015 edition

“The best thing about Memories is making them”

y

Summer already, and at the time of writing most schools are in their final week, so by the time you receive this, the school holidays will be here! As always I will take some time away from my computer during the school holidays. My older, increasingly independent children aren’t as keen on activities with Mum as when they were younger but I am sure we will still enjoy some family time, while they are still all at home. Just another year before the first potentially leaves for University. August can be a slow time for lots of local shops and small businesses, with so many of their customers away on holiday, or enjoying a different routine which takes them to different shopping venues. I am sure that there are some local to you who would appreciate your support during this quiet period (and the rest of the time too). The September issue will be delivered to you late August. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Saturday 15th August. Please be mindful of my usual tight turnaround time on the September magazine as I try to avoid spending too many hours glued to my computer during August. Please send in your contributions as always but do your very best to meet the copy deadline! Enjoy August and I will be back in a months’ time with your September ‘back to school’ magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

A Life Changed Through a Life Shared Denis and Linda Birkin from Conisbrough are Carers supporting a young man named Ben, who is on the autistic spectrum, through the provision of a pioneering service called Shared Lives. The couple, who also have children of their own, have looked after Ben within their home since he was a baby – providing foster care up to the age of 18, following which they wanted to ensure Ben could remain in the family environment they had created for him. To do this Denis and Linda became Shared Lives Carers, under a scheme delivered by Doncaster charity The Avalon Group. Shared Lives offers adults with a wide range of disabilities and mental health issues the chance to become part of an extended family by living in the home of a trained carer. For those participating in the scheme this can be either on a long or short term basis, with options for day breaks and respite relief. For Ben it means the ability to live a fulfilled life surrounded by all the things he loves and all the things he needs. Even the detached bungalow in which the family lives, was purchased to allow Ben to play music and sing as loud as he likes! He is also a valued, active member of the community, playing drums and singing at his local church alongside Denis who plays trumpet and Linda who plays guitar, and has a great passion for baking and art.

This is made possible by a life lived alongside people who care for him in the same way any family would. Denis and Linda have provided a home and a level of support that means he has flourished in ways which a residential care setting may not have been able to achieve. The Birkins were recognised for their level of care at the Pride of Doncaster Awards 2014, receiving the ‘Carers of the Year’ trophy. “The Avalon Group have been a really great help to us, delivering excellent quality training with commitment and dedication. Shared Lives really has to be the way forward.” said Denis The Avalon Group are currently looking to recruit new Shared Lives Carers throughout Doncaster and the surrounding areas. If you would like to find out more, or apply to become a Carer please contact Alison on 01302 910 191, or visit www. avalongroup.org.uk for more information. T

Arts Review

& what’s going on - AUGUST 2015

Caro in Yorkshire (Yorkshire Sculpture Park)

Every now and then you make a discovery and at the end of June the DNweekeND was on in Doncaster – it’s a loosely structured arts festival, involving many local people, with lots of things going on all over the town, some seem quite random, others programed and organised. So I went to have tea with Wendy Cope (poet) at CAST, and an excellent tea we got there – Doncaster’s equivalent to Betty’s… and the small audience had a very pleasant time of it, poetry, chat, tea and cakes… what better? I then stumbled out into the bright June afternoon of Sir Nigel Gresley Square to find the Doncaster Youth Jazz orchestra playing. Oh Wow! They are wonderful! They needed an audience 10 times the size of we few, who sat and enjoyed their magnificent playing. What a treat! Then, Later that day in the grand Mansion House salon the Quirky Choir performed a concert including the ‘Making Music’ commission, themed on Doncaster Market, they had worked with composer Anna Braithwaite who had devised a really challenging piece of music for the choir. They were tremendous, a superb setting and wonderful fun event. The Quirky Choir is run by Janet Wood, at The Point – home of DArts - on Wednesdays from 6.45pm to 8.45pm. This concert will be broadcast via Radio 3 at some point in the Autumn. A couple of weeks later I discovered Doncaster’s Brewery & Tap on Young Street ( Waterdale). I was not the designated driver that evening, so I could do a little tasting, and have to report that it’s very nice beer they make there, and you can wander through the brewery as its just behind the bar! All sorts goes on there, Art classes happen and Morris dancers practice in the upstairs room, but what I went to was an evening of the spoken word and poetry. Well Spoken! This happens every second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm - 13th Aug the next oneand is an informal get together for writers to read their work, and it can get very lively. We had some excellent work put before us by writers aged from 20 to 94. And then there is a Writers’ Group which also is a Monthly event - check dates with the venue. It’s a support network/critical friend

to writers of all types. Bring a piece of poetry, prose or script to read and discuss. All very welcome. More information: m.jenkinson@blueyonder.co.uk http:// doncasterbrewery.co.uk/brewery-tap/ Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15. Exhibition: at Cusworth Hall until 20 September Toys Were Us!. We all have fond memories of our favourite childhood toys. Perhaps we have even lovingly hidden them away in a cupboard or drawer. This exhibition brings together some of the most iconic examples of toys within our collection from Victorian times to the present day. Maybe you will spot something you recognise –I have found a few from my childhood in there! Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery until 13 September Doncaster Art Club The annual display of work by members of the Doncaster Art Club is always one of our most popular exhibitions. This year’s exhibition includes paintings, drawings and sculptures in a variety of media, with many of the works being for sale Until 13 September Departing from Doncaster Celebrating Doncaster’s fine railway heritage, by bringing together an eclectic mix of railway artefacts and memorabilia from the Doncaster Museum Service and the Doncaster Grammar School Railway Collection. Many significant items will be on display for the first time, as we recognise the importance of Doncaster as the starting point for many a great railway journey. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums Art at the Deli: Scicluna Deli, just next to Doncaster Market - an exhibition of work from students at the HUB – Doncaster College www.artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck until 20 September Elements of Architecture: Corridors and Welbeck Tunnels. This is a rare chance to see the part of Rem Koolhaas’ exhibition Elements of Architecture which was influenced by the Welbeck Estate. The exhibition focusses on the ‘Corridor’ display from Elements of Architecture, and explores the vast underground ballroom and tunnels at Welbeck. They were built by the 5th Duke of Portland in the 19th century, and the exhibition presents theories about this mythologized architecture through film and hotography. Elements of Architecture was originally exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2014. www.harleygallery.co.uk

Back Pain – Physiotherapy can help. A recent survey of 1000 people with back pain aged 25-65, found that more than a third thought bed rest was the best remedy. In fact the opposite is true! Exercise such as swimming or Pilates can help with muscle & joint pain and your Physiotherapist will advise you on the right sort of exercises to help reduce your pain and stop it from returning. Back pain is a ‘Musculoskeletal disorder’ (MSD) which also includes neck pain and repetitive strain injury. One of the main causes of people being off sick from work, MSDs are effectively treated with Physiotherapy, with one study showing that 80% of people who had physiotherapy for their MSD were able to carry on working without going off sick Many people mistakenly believe that you always needed a GP referral to see a Physiotherapist, which isn’t the case. If you are suffering with back pain, the quicker you can get to see a physiotherapist the better, so a speedy self referral is key, as NHS waiting times are usually very long! A Physiotherapist will first check if you have any serious health problems that could be connected to your back pain. They will then find the cause of your pain & look at ways to help prevent further problems, using effective methods such as manual treatments and acupuncture, an appropriate exercise plan and pain relief.

Misson & Springs WI In 1948 a diamond engagement ring was donated and sold to start off fundraising for a new charity; Marie Curie’s daughter, Eve, gave permission for her mother’s name to be used and we are now all very familiar with the name and the logo. Rebecca Bramley, who is in charge of fundraising in South Yorkshire for Marie Curie was our speaker on Wednesday 24th June. Many of us associated the charity with cancer but it works with people in the final weeks of their life, whatever the cause. Every year over 30,000 hours of nursing care is provided by specialist nurses either in people’s own homes or in one of the nine hospices nationwide. Just as we look forward to seeing the first daffodils each year to show that spring is on its way, the familiar logo of this flower was chosen to represent optimism, renewal and hope and it forms an important part of all the fundraising activities which are vital to support the charity. We do not have a meeting in July as so many of us are away on holiday; on Wednesday 26th August we are looking forward to an evening with a Chinese theme provided by our speaker, Shan Handley. We would love you to join us; please contact our secretary, Lynda Redfern on 07796 975578 for more information, or turn up on the last Wednesday of every month, at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson, where you will be made very welcome. We always make sure that we have time for a chat and our excellent catering team provides an endless supply of refreshments, which always includes home-made cakes. Strictly Back in Town! Appearing exclusively at TFest; Doncaster....are you ready to welcome back to his hometown Chris Madin, lead singer from Strictly Come Dancing and his wonderful, wonderful orchestra! Chris and his 14 piece band will take festival goers on a fabulous journey through the musical eras; from swing to rock there will most definitely be a song for everyone. “I cannot wait to be performing back here in Doncaster” Chris tells us. “I have recently moved home from London, bringing my wife and two small children with me and there is nothing like being back up North! I have worked and travelled all over the world, and most of my work is still in London I am there every week recording, so it is great that I finally have a base back here in Doncaster near my family and friends” Chris left Doncaster aged just 11 to study music at Chethams Music School in Manchester. An accomplished piano player he also became a renowned vocalist, working professionally from the age of 16 providing vocals to commercials, video games and theme tunes, developing a reputation as a sought after session singer for the industry. After several years as one of the most sought after ‘voices for hire’ Strictly Come Dancing came along and Chris has now been a regular singer alongside Tommy Blaze for 5 years. He didn’t stop there...X Factor naturally wanted a slice of the action and in 2014 Chris provided the vocal arrangements for the groups and the male artists. “Much of what I do takes place behind the scenes. Arranging scores and music for artists is a big part of my job and is what I have done most recently for Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest this year. That was my first Eurovision, having been asked every year, but been unable to make it because of work commitments. It was enormous fun, if not hard work, and yes it is something I would do again!” I cannot wait to play at TFest and bring along my band. I have some of the best musicians in Thanks to Reanne Mayes of Flawless Expressions for the Photography

the country joining me and it will be a fantastic show. I heard of TFest in 2013 through my family and followed it on Facebook and Twitter. I loved their ethos of bringing live music through local bands to local people. Everybody should have access to live music, especially children. They need to be inspired and I am hoping to do that this year myself with my wonderful orchestra. “ “We are really excited to be bringing Chris to TFest this year” says organiser Steve Madin “We wanted to make sure that there was a very definite family appeal to this year’s show, and we know that Chris, who will play for an hour and a half will bring something for everyone. We have a fantastic mix of bands this year, with this one being the real difference and the real family attraction. ”Chris will play from 4:30 on the main stage at the Cricket Club. TFest takes place on 26th September 2015 in Tickhill. Tickets are priced at £15 per adult £6 per child or £40 per family ticket (2 adults and 3 children). Tickets are available online at www.tfest.co.uk or though KSM or Castlegates DIY in Tickhill.

The Perfect Holiday

What makes a place worthy of being a holiday destination? I ask this because my wife & I spent a week in Hay-on-Wye in June and one person’s reaction to hearing of it was; “What on earth do you want to go there for? It would be like having a holiday in Retford!” So, what attracts us to somewhere for a few days? Predictable, good weather? Historical or cultural significance? Natural beauty? Well, the sun blazed during our week away; Hay-on-Wye is historical, interesting and eclectic (it is the second hand book capital of the world, after all) and it is on a beautiful river as well as the edge of the Brecon Beacons; so it qualifies on all fronts. However, I would suggest that the perfect holiday spot is somewhere different to where you normally live or work; and somewhere where your attitude can be one of rest, relaxation and unwinding. So, if you live in Bawtry, then a week in Retford isn’t that appealing but if you call Los Angeles home then Retford would be a very attractive option (traditional English market town, Kings Park, the canal, close to Clumber Park, etc,). 24

Bawtry Today

I imagine you will soon be having a holiday of one sort or another; be it at the other end of the world or the other end of Yorkshire – I hope you are able to enjoy where you go, that you will see places you haven’t seen before, you would eat interesting food you don’t normally and that you would be able to rest, de-stress and spend a good amount of time with your friends or family. The Bible says that resting is important for us, that at times we need to step off the treadmill of life; to sleep, eat, relax. A holiday is the perfect chance to re-engage with the one relationship that is often sacrificed in the busyness of life. At one point Jesus told his followers; “Let us go off by ourselves to some place where we will be alone and can rest a while.”. So, no matter where you go on holiday, I hope you are able to take Jesus’ words seriously and take him with you so you can truly rest. Why not take a book that deals with spiritual issues that you can sit and enjoy while on the beach/ by the lake/ up the mountain? I know a lovely town where you get second-hand books at a terrific price.

JOINT VENTURE PUTS CAREERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT A young illustrator is celebrating success after her designs were published in a new book that gives careers advice to teenagers. The book, Your Choice, Your Future, has been written by Doncaster-based life coach Sandra Greatorex who runs Butterfly Transformation and works with people of all ages across South Yorkshire who are starting or changing careers. Sandra was coaching 18-year-old Sarah Bradley who was undecided about what to do after leaving sixth-form when she spotted her hidden talents as an illustrator and gave her the opportunity to collaborate on the book. Sarah is now studying History and History of Art at Reading University and is delighted with the finished product and the valuable experience she gained. “I wish I had been given the opportunity to read this book when I was younger as it really helped me to consider my choices,” she commented. Sandra explained: “Your Choice, Your Future was a book I always had a passion to write after the experiences of my own children and the young people I have coached. It is aimed at people aged 13-14 and is a practical, step by step guide to all their options. garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Allotments make a comeback! During World War II and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment. To me the very word ‘allotment’ evokes memories of my granddad and post-war community spirit. During the 1960’s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity until very recently. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket, and vegetable gardening just wasn’t considered sexy! There’s an old saying: what goes around comes around, and it encapsulates perfectly the fate of allotments which are currently enjoying a popularity surge. Suddenly we’re concerned about food in a big way. The number of food banks is growing as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, while the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of the masses. And what about all those thousands of food-miles our strawberries and courgettes clock up on their journey to the

supermarket shelves? Surely that’s damaging the environment. Then there’s the thorny problem of childhood obesity. The list of food-related concerns seems to be growing exponentially. In the absence of clear leadership from the top, many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food. Yet modern housing often means tiny back gardens and frequently no front garden, so where are we going to grow all this lovely produce? The answer of course is to acquire an allotment and many people are doing just that. Price and availability varies around the country. In many areas there are waiting lists. But councils are taking allotments much more seriously and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. Registering your interest may help to encourage the search for more suitable areas – perhaps you could suggest areas to your local council? If a plot is too large for your personal needs you may be able to rent half or find a like-minded friend to share it with. Enquire today and you and your family could soon, quite literally, be reaping the benefits! Useful Website http://www.nsalg.org.uk/

Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake It has been a very busy month, dealing with all the different things that the position of Councillor requires. I have provided an update on a few of these as well as letting you know about developments in the ward. Highways, parking and speeding issues I was pleased to support residents protesting about the increase in traffic and speeding vehicles on Station Road. There were many children and parents protesting as well as older members of the community who are concerned about safety on the road. I discussed these concerns and many other highway issues with DMBC and was informed that there are no plans to put in a crossing because the volume of traffic isn’t high enough. The evidence for this was obtained in 2013 so I have asked them to repeat the survey. In addition there is a proposal to introduce an advisory reduction in the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph on Station Road and on South Avenue there is a proposal for a permanent reduction in the existing speed limit from 30mph to 20mph. Both of these proposals will take up to a year to implement due to the legal processes that have to be gone through, but residents have said that they are pleased to see that some progress is being made to improve road safety. I have also spoken with South Yorkshire Police requesting enforcement action to deter speeding drivers. I share many of the concerns of the Residents Group about other Highways issues, including the many parking issues, so will be continuing to talk to DMBC about getting these issues dealt with. A frequent one brought to my attention is the lack of lining on the High Street which is causing confusion for drivers who are turning right onto Tickhill Road. I and many others have asked for these lines to be restored and I am waiting to be given the date when this work will be completed. I was pleased to see that the pelican crossing green man is now in its correct position, following my conversation with DMBC who fixed the problem within the day. Paths and upkeep of verges Residents have told me about a number of uneven paths that are around the town – all have been reported so I will be monitoring to ensure action is taken. I have also reported the overgrown verges throughout the ward – some have been cut back but action is still required on others. As I walk around Bawtry and Austerfield, I report a number of things that need attention. If you see anything that needs DMBC attention, I am happy for you to contact me, or you can ring 736000 or if you prefer you can download the My Doncaster app from the DMBC website which makes it easier to report things on your phone and you receive confirmation that your issue is being dealt with. Putting in more dropped kerbs When I attended the BARRS sports day, I met a resident from the Peakes Croft area who explained about the

difficulties that she and other residents had getting shopping trolleys up the high kerbs. I passed these concerns onto DMBC who said that they will be in touch with the scheme manager to arrange for the kerbs to be dropped. Community Involvement I am pleased to be supporting Bawtry Residents Group and being involved with the development of the Neighbourhood Plan. I also attend every Town Council meeting – unfortunately not always from the beginning due to Rossington Parish Council being on the same night. I am pleased to assist the Town Council wherever I can. My surgeries at the monthly Community Shop at Austerfield Centre are proving to be very busy. Their 2nd Birthday Party was a fantastic event and a great opportunity to see all that the centre has to offer – if you haven’t visited yet, there is so much going on from holiday clubs to family days, to lunch clubs and accommodation can be hired for your own private party. It is run by volunteers who do a fantastic job. Bawtry Community Library is another example of brilliant community activities – their monthly coffee mornings at which I have my surgery, are really busy with wonderful cakes and stalls. The volunteers there have transformed the library into a very welcoming community library and community venue. Another group of committed volunteers are in BARS who have done a tremendous job to secure funding for a much needed community pavilion – not just for all our sports teams but for other community activities. More funding is needed to ensure that the pavilion can be built which will be a much needed community asset. How to Contact Me I have 2 surgeries where you can come and see me, tell me your concerns about Doncaster council services, tell me what needs improving or I can assist with individual problems that you have with DMBC services. Last Saturday of every month – Austerfield Centre Community Shop from 10am – 12pm 2nd Friday of every month - Bawtry Community Library from 10am – 12pm Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Twitter @CllrRachaelB : Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Thank you for reading this and I hope you have a lovely August. MISSON PARISH COUNCIL Chairman’s Annual Report – 2014/2015 This is my fourth Annual Report as Chairman and at last year’s meeting Cllr Wooliams was unanimously elected as Vice Chairman. 2014/15 has been an exceptionally busy year and as there is still a lot of uncertainty around the possible developments facing the residents of Misson I’m sure next year will be equally challenging. ECONOMIC HEALTH The Council reviewed the budget forecasts 2015/16 and again expressed concern at the implications of BDC’s austerity measures, particularly with regard to rural areas. Consequently Members voted to approve a parish Precept increase of 5 %. The Clerk was instructed to notify BDC of the Misson Precept requirement of £9,864. ENVIRONMENT 1. Tunnel Tech – There have been some very positive developments regarding Tunnel Tech. On the 14th May 2015, Tunnel Tech pleaded guilty to two charges in Mansfield Magistrates Court. The BDC solicitor put forward a strong case including impact statements from Misson residents and the Parish Council. BDC stressed that the severity of the breach be viewed as “reckless” whilst TTN claimed it should be viewed as “negligent”. BDC were successful, and the breach was considered “reckless” and consequently TTN were fined £32,000 plus costs making a total of £60,154. Ten residents attended the court hearing and the general feeling was that it was a good result. BDC and TTN are now in discussions in an attempt to eliminate odour emissions beyond the site boundary. I would like to thank Kath Williamson and Steve Botcherby and the rest of the TTCC for their tenacity in this matter as they

refused to give up in the face of so many setbacks. 2. Grants – I would like to thank Lafarge-Tarmac Landfill Communities Fund for their grant of £9,773 for the Misson Parish Local Access Project; Cllr Simpson for the grant of £300 for wildflower verges; Hanson’s for their contribution of £700 for the new Community Centre oil tank and to Martin Rowley of Misson Sand Quarry and North Notts Lions for their individual contributions of £100 for the Christmas lights. We have also received £1,000 grant towards the NCC Lengthsman scheme and a Locality Grant for the Neighbourhoold Plan of £3,220. 3. Neighbourhood Plan – I would like to thank David Hobson and the NP Steering Group for all their work in getting this project off the ground. Funding has been applied for, the opinions of residents sought both in public consultations, and also by questionnaire. The results of the questionnaires are being collated by The Steering Group and will inform the content of the NP. Natalie Cockerel from the BDC Planning Department has provided expert support and her input is appreciated in this mammoth undertaking. This plan is crucial in ensuring that the residents of Misson are taken into consideration and dovetails into a variety of issues including planning and the environment. 4. BDC and NCC Broadband Scheme – The BDC Broadband Scheme is now up and running and been successfully installed in a number of homes in the village & the community centre. Feedback on the project has been very positive indeed. MPC continues to press to be included in the NCC rural high speed fibre broadband

scheme which could benefit many more Misson residents & businesses. FRACKING We are still awaiting the submission of planning permission by IGas which is expected anytime now. However, they have decided to move the site of their exploratory well further back from the road at Misson Springs to inside the Rocket Site itself. The reasons given for this are that it is further away from the road; further away from Misson; will be screened by existing buildings; there is already an access road in place and it will cause less disruption to residents. I would like to thank Jayne Watson for all the hard work she has put in on this issue, including her attendance and input to the Community Liaison Group. She has done a lot to make residents aware of the possible consequences of fracking should this planning application be successful. I would also like to thank the Misson Community Action Group for their help with the Parish Survey, together with their efforts to raise awareness of this issue, which is literally “on our doorstep”. HIGHWAYS, ROAD SAFETY AND PARISH PATHS 1. White lining/repairs – The white lining leading up to the junctions and bends in the village and remedial repair to potholes has recently been undertaken. However, there are still some outstanding issues, which include a possible HGV weight limit through the village and also the traffic speed and access issues at Newington.

2. Fly-tipping/bottle banks – Fly tipping continues to be a problem and residents are encouraged to be vigilant and report any instances either directly to Bassetlaw

Environmental Department or to the Parish Council. The bottle banks sited at Misson Mill are still frequently full and residents should report this to BDC on 01909 533 156. I would also recommend a mobile/computer application called Fix My Street. If you see any problem with litter, fly tipping, faulty streetlights etc., these incidents can be reported on this app. The complaint immediately goes live on the internet together with the date the authority were notified. The response is swift and I would certainly encourage residents to use it. 3. Village Trees – An arboriculturist carried out an inspection of the trees in the village and compiled a report. This has formed the basis of a plan of action for their maintenance. The most urgent work was completed in 2014. 4. Heritage Project – Julie Watkins is leading the Misson Heritage Project, which seeks to link the historic village centre with public paths around the parish with a leaflet and a permanent lectern map on the village green. I would like to thank Julie for all the work she has devoted to this project and to garnering ideas for the village signs. CONCLUSION I would like to extend my thanks to all my fellow Councillors for

their support over the past year. Particularly to Andy Woolliams who has deputized for me and as always to Sue Scott who gives support not only to myself but to residents and members alike. She is the first port of call when there is any problem and I don’t know how we would manage without her. Cllr Valance is retiring this year after many years of service and I would like to thank him for his insight and input on behalf of myself and fellow Councillors. I have already mentioned individuals in the body of this report but in addition, I would like to thank Liz Yates our County Cllr for her advice and support. Finally, I want to thank the residents of the parish who have helped inform the Neighbourhood Plan, The Misson Community Action Group and also the members of the Community Centre for arranging all of the activities which make this village special. Last but not least, I need to mention those residents who turn up to Parish Council Meetings and alert us to matters that need attention and which might otherwise be missed. I would also like to welcome John Holmes who is replacing Eric and is joining us on the Parish Council.

SUMMER TIME IS HERE! Firstly, we’d like to update you on the success of the fourth annual ‘Visit Bawtry Polo Cup’. It was an amazing day and lovely to see so many Bawtry businesses and residents supporting the teams and enjoying pitch side picnics or the more comfortable surroundings of the Robinsons of Bawtry Champagne Marquee where the bubbles flowed whilst guests were entertained to music from the VIBE jazz quartet. The Vanilla Rooms were the champions, finally stealing the winners crown from the Crown Hotel team who had been undefeated winners. And, in addition to it being an amazing social event attracting a record attendance of 800 people, we raised £9,200 for local Cancer charity Aurora Wellbeing Centres. Moving from one social event to another – it’s just a matter of weeks until Doncaster’s greatest occasion – the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival. If you’re heading off to the races Bawtry is a great place to find your outfit, get your hair done, source your accessories and get race ready! Just make sure you make your appointments nice and early to avoid disappointment. Oh, and if you fancy brushing up on your betting skills The St Leger Preview dinner at The Crown Hotel on Tuesday 8th September might just provide you with a few, much needed tips. Racing pundits Simon Mapletoft, Roger Hart and Derek ‘Tommo’ Thomson will be there to share their wisdom before the festival starts.

As the summer holidays are upon us we hope you find the time to shop and socialise with us. And, if you’ve got little ones, you could always treat them to lunch or tea and cake at one of our lovely restaurants or cafes and admire all the lovely floral displays throughout the town provided by Byron at Hurst Lane Nurseries. In other news, Robinsons of Bawtry has been shortlisted in the Premium Fashion Independent of the Year category in fashion industries most prestigious awards – The Drapers Independent Awards – for the second year running. Winners will be announced in September so in the meantime keep everything crossed for them. Please continue to support your local town by shopping and socialising locally. Methodist Minister Dear Friends, August is a month of harvests. In my local dialect, the month of August is called ‘Dzifuu”. It is translated as ‘too much to eat’. To some of us, we have too much to eat and indulge in. Just about a month ago, I picked up a news item that a supermarket chain has now decided to donate food to charity everyday in order to cut down waste. It was reported that a charity would pick up the items free of charge and turn them into meals for those in need. This company was working under pressure in order to feed the hungry in our society. However, it is also reported that almost 50% of the total amount of food thrown away in the UK comes from our homes. More than half of this is food and drink, which could be eaten. The irony of this issue is that not everybody has enough to eat or drink. Moses, a leader of the Jews, is reported to have instructed God’s people regarding looking after the poor. ‘“When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you...”’ (Leviticus 23: 22) (New International Version). Poor people are always with us whilst we throw

away good food and drink. Unfortunately, some of us have reasons for not helping them. Some of the reasons are that poor people are lazy, scroungers, wasteful, cannot manage their resources or would not use the help given them appropriately. Moses’ instruction however, did not ask us to find a reason not to help the poor. We are to make sure that they are catered for because it can be you, a friend or a relation next time. I wonder what steps we can take to reduce waste in our homes and use the excesses we have to help the poor amongst us. I want to use this opportunity to appeal to readers to consider making our communities ‘poverty free’ without depending on agencies, which have their resources being cut to the core. It is my belief that if each one of us gives some help to the poor, their conditions will change for the better. We don’t need hundreds of pounds to do so. There is another adage in my language, which says, ‘little drops of water makes a mighty ocean’. Just give it a try and put a smile on a poor person’s face. Have a blessed month.

Tickhill and District Lions Club A busy Summer for Tickhill and District Lions with 3 Galas and a Summer Bash to report. On Friday 26th June The Scarbrough Arms hosted our first Summer Bash in aid of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. Live music from The Sixties Mix Band and a Fish and Chip supper were enjoyed by everyone and the event was a great success. The Treasurer is totting up the figures and we will report the donation to the Cancer Detection Trust next month. We hope this is the first of an annual event in the Lions calendar. We attended Bawtry and Wadworth Galas earlier in June and then the Tickhill Gala at the beginning of July. It’s great to see so many people attending these local events and the weather at Tickhill contributed to a record sell out of strawberries and cream! Feedback from many people is that it was the best gala they had seen for many years. Thanks to everyone who supported us at all the events. For the 35th year running the Lions of District 105C are proud to be organising their Annual Fun and Sports Day for the Disabled on Saturday 8th August 2015. It takes place at Sandall Park Doncaster ·Opening by Doncaster’s Civic Mayor Cllr Paul Wray @ 11.30am. Entertainment music & PA throughout the day from DJ Lion Chris & DJ Legs, Tony Lister (George Formby) - 1pm, Lisa Tetley’s School of Dance - 2pm, Take a Bow – 2.45pm, Presentations – 3 30pm. Let’s hope the sun shines on all the events this summer. T

BRG was formed at the end of 2014 to work alongside the Bawtry Town Council (BTC) and the Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) and act as a ‘voice’ for Bawtry residents on issues they feel need addressing including parking, routing of HGV’s through the town, pedestrian crossings and planning. It is believed that there is a need to actively engage with the community and to effect the necessary improvements in the town for the benefit of all. BRG, in conjunction with the Town Council, will continue with its attempts to facilitate these actions. Perhaps, in the future, these community relationships may be developed in other ways. The development of a Neighbourhood Plan for Bawtry presents an ideal opportunity to bring the community together and seek the views of residents and businesses within the town. The process of consultation will continue over the next 18 months or so. A current initiative for the Group is the speed limits and traffic calming measures on the major routes through the town. Two specific issues are the extension of the 30 mph limit on Doncaster Road (as far as the town boundary) and the provision of a pelican crossing, and reduced speed limit, on Station Road in the vicinity of Mayflower School. We are working in conjunction with BTC and residents to petition for a crossing due to the number of near misses pedestrians are having with motor vehicles – in particular children crossing during peak school times. The petition is being circulated around Bawtry asking residents to sign so we can address DMBC on this issue. We have the backing of Caroline Flint MP and our local Ward Member, Rachael Blake. We will be involving the local press and campaigning vigorously to get some appropriate action on this matter. BRG is steadily growing in numbers, and meets on a bi-monthly basis (on the last Thursday of the month). The next meetings will be on 30 July and 24 September at 7:30 pm in the Crown Hotel (Leger Suite). If you are a Bawtry resident and care about your town, then please come along to the meetings. Let’s start working together! For further information about the Residents Group phone 01302 374009 or 01302 710899. T
