Welcome to the April 2015 edition

April already, and Easter is nearly upon us. Two thirds of the way through the school year and exams are once again looming, only a month to go now, until formal exams start. Two children in my household will be taking exams this year, one doing AS levels and another doing GCSE’s. That also means 2 separate exam results days to look forward to in August! Good luck to everyone reading this with exams on the horizon. We enjoyed celebrating Today Publication’s 10th anniversary during March, and as part of this I stepped outside of my comfort zone and agreed to be a guest on Andrew Isaac’s ‘Doncaster is Great’ radio show on SineFM. A podcast of the hour long show which went out on 18th March may still be available on the SineFM website should anybody wish to have a listen! A kitchen update for you. My new kitchen is due to be delivered the same day as the pallets with these magazines on, by which time the old one will hopefully have been removed. After hours of research, all of my shiny new appliances are also due on various days of the same week. So the fun is about to begin! It is possible that we will be spotted making full use of our range of local restaurants and takeaways over the next few weeks, until the new kitchen is fully operational. More details next month!

Garden Projects... ...GO! “April is a great month for a garden project “ April is a great month for a garden project; one which can be achieved in a morning or an afternoon, and which improves a few square metres. You’ll feel you’ve achieved something wonderful and if you break the whole garden into a series of small projects it suddenly appears more manageable. Here are three to get you started.

Seating Don’t forget an all weather seat so you can sit and contemplate all your hard work over a cup of tea or a nip of something stronger. Teak from renewable resources is fantastic but cast iron or aluminium is also good, though you’ll need a cushion to protect your posterior on cold days! Position it in a sunny area. Buy a few flowering daffodils, tulips and pansies and plant them in a pretty pot next to the bench, then sit back and enjoy.

Strawberry Pots You don’t need a huge patch to enjoy growing strawberries. Plant a few in pots as a treat. Buy young, rich green plants which have been certified virus-free. Plant 3-4 in a 12 inch (30cm) clay pot. The crowns (where shoots meet roots) should be level with the compost surface. Water them in and stand in the shelter of a house wall. If you have a greenhouse or a cold frame they will establish more quickly and fruit earlier. Pinch off any runners which form.

By Rachel Leverton

Grass Lawns always look bedraggled after the winter. Remove dead grass by raking the surface with a wire toothed rake. Improve drainage on heavy soil by spiking it with a garden fork every 6 inches (15cm) or so, to a depth of about 4 inches (10cm), giving the fork a good wiggle each time. Sweep sharp sand into the holes with a broom. Then mow the lawn with the blades set on high and remove the clippings. Two weeks later apply a combined weed killer and fertilizer. If you’re lucky it will rain within 24 hours. If not just water it in. Mow weekly to keep the lawn thick and healthy.

Hello Everyone Did you know that Mayflower Sanctuary was established in 2003. We re-home in excess of 500 animals per year. Our vets bills are in excess of £40,000 per year and our electricity bill is £2,000 per quarter to keep all of our residents warm on these horrid cold winter days. We are a charity and I can hear you saying ‘where does this money come from?’ Well it comes from people like you and whatever fund raising events that we are able to arrange. Fund raising alone however is not enough to keep us open. We have always had a reserve fund, we called it our rainy day fund. Well it has been raining quite a lot lately and this fund is dwindling and slipping away. We have never been good at asking for money, however the time has come. If we carry on as we are we will not be here next year, WE ARE DESPERATE. What will happen to all the dogs and cats in our care if we have to close your guess will only be as good as ours. We desperately need donations, we all appreciate times are hard but did you know if everyone that is reading this page gave as little as £2 every month by direct debit that would be a fantastic start to solving our financial problem and we would not be so concerned about our future. Our brand new reception area has been built with money left to us from the late Councillor Granger who recognised our need for somewhere to arrange fund raising evenings, and somewhere for local school and community children to learn about the welfare of dogs and cats. Apart from that this building

Finding a forever home has numerous uses far too many to put in words. He was adamant that we were not to use this legacy for running costs. This was his wish and we hope we can do this justice. We need a new roof on our cattery and if you would like to take a look at our Facebook page we have set up a ‘Raise the Roof Fund’. Also on Facebook we are selling and auctioning items, so please take a look and we hope you will be generous.

Name: Lucy Sex: Female Nov 2014 Date into care: Age: 6 Good with dogs: No Good with cats: ? Lived with children: Older Kids My name is Lucy and I came to Mayflower with my brother, Mo, when our Mum died leaving us all alone. We were very sad but we knew that she had loved us very much. Her wish was that we wouldn’t be parted so our next home has to be one for us together. I am the more confident of the pair and can usually be found at the front of our pen trying to catch your attention. One of us has to try and get us a new Mum. In the meantime, I’ll just sit here and wait. Please don’t make us wait too long.

We have 2 cats that require expensive dental treatment so again take a look at our Facebook page. This has been a hard page to write this month, but if you would like to donate by direct debit please call me and we will happily send details to you. Or you will find our Bank details on our Website We do have some beautiful animals in our care and still a huge waiting list, if you are considering adopting a dog or cat please come along and see us we will be happy to chat about which dog or cat would suit your lifestyle. Thank you to everyone that came to our psychic evening, it was a huge success. We will be doing this again on the 18th April so pop that in your diaries. Thank you for reading this. Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry.

Name: Whiskey Sex: Female Feb 2015 Date into care: 18 months Age on arrival: Good with dogs: Yes Good with cats: Yes Lived with children: Yes When Whiskys owner had to move she was unable to take her babies with her so contacted Mayflower for help. It was a sad day when she left Whisky and her buddy, Guinness, behind. Whisky is the more confident of the pair and is soon purring away and asking for cuddles. She has previously been a housecat but would possibly like to explore a secure garden. Although a home together would be perfect as they are best buddies, its not essential if the right home comes along separately. Please don’t pass them by.

The Doncaster and

Misson & Springs WI District Heritage I hated history, but it would have been different if he had been my teacher » « You felt as if he knew them personally » These were just a couple of the many compliments about David Templeman’s talk on Elizabeth I, Mary, Queen of Scots and Bess of Hardwick which had our members hanging on his every word in February. His in-depth talk on the interaction between the three most colourful and charismatic women of their period, gave a unique insight into a predominantly man’s world which was conquered by these three powerful women and was a fitting tribute to women in this, the centenary year of the WI movement. Fortunately, David has many other talks in his repertoire and I am certain that we shall be inviting him back to Misson before too long.

Association

The Doncaster and District Heritage Association will be holding its annual Local History fair at Doncaster Museum on the 16th May 2015. Rossington and Tickhill and District History groups will be among twenty local organisations that will be mounting displays and providing information on the fascinating history of the area. Entry to the Fair is free, so if you are interested in the history of your village and its people why not come along and see what you can find out, you can be assured of a warm welcome. T

Talking about your worries and problems can be a very good way of releasing some of the stress that can build up when you’re a carer. Your family, friends and the medical and social work team can all listen to your concerns. But sometimes it’s best to talk to someone who knows exactly what you’re going through, because it’s happening to them too. Other carers can offer kindness, sympathy, understanding and advice, and they can make you feel less isolated. Anyone living with Dementia/Alzheimers, or, those who have concerns about their memory, are very welcome to come along to our dementia / alzheimers peer support groups. • Do you have, or, do you care for someone with dementia/alzheimers? • Come and meet us and others in similar circumstances for a chat and coffee in a supportive and informal environment. • Groups are open to both carers and those living with dementia/alzheimers. • We meet monthly, sharing experiences, knowledge on services. • Make new friends. Mattersey Primary School: In Search of the Fallen Over the last year, the staff and children at Mattersey Primary have been following the progress of our caretaker, Pete Cox, who has been searching for the fallen local lads who fell during the first World War. Pete and a group of like minded friends have travelled across Europe and other places to visit each grave of those named on our local Retford/Mattersey war memorials.

At school, we have been most interested in finding out about the soldiers who came from Mattersey. Up until quite recently one man, Edgar Glasby, was proving to be pretty elusive. In recent weeks, an accidental discovery enabled Pete to locate this soldier, who turned out to be buried in the cemetery in Mattersey – just up the road from the school! The children were very excited to be told of this discovery and were invited by Pete to visit the grave with him to pay their respects. As well as visiting the grave, the children helped to clean the headstone and to lay crosses in remembrance. They noticed that some of the lettering had worn away and were quite dismayed by this. We would be most interested in finding out more about Mr Glasby and in particular we would like to make contact with his family. If you know him as a relative, please contact the school on 01777 817265 and ask to speak to Mrs Patton (Head Teacher). It is hoped that we might be able to restore the headstone and would appreciate support from the local community to enable this. If you are able to help – please contact the school on the telephone number above…… World Book day 2015 Last week we celebrated World Book Day in the usual manner of dressing up as book characters. Every child in school joined in, as did all of the staff. A fun day was had by all… T

A Percussive Evening For the average concert-goer, an evening of percussion could easily be a daunting prospect. Rhys Matthews (marimba and African drum) and Tim Abel (piano) soon dispelled any such thoughts at Tickhill Music Society. From the opening Black and White Rag, to the gypsy rhythms of the closing Czardas, the audience was gripped by the virtuosity and vigour of the two performers. There was much to learn and admire. We learned that percussion can take many forms – not just the beating of a stick on a resonant surface, but clapping, finger–snapping, foot–tapping, and even percussive vocals. While there is little original music for the marimba this is no disadvantage as the music of other ages and other instruments was arranged so skilfully as to seem a natural fit, whether it was 30

written by Mozart for the piano or by Kabalevsky for full orchestra. And the ft marimba is capable of soft limpid tones as well as exuberance. What made this a special evening was the charm and enthusiasm of the two players, allied to their obvious skill and musicianship. It is sure to live on in the memory of all who attended.

A Neighbourhood Plan for Bawtry Are you happy with the way Bawtry is being developed? Are you confident Bawtry will remain the place you love in the future? Local planning is managed by DMBC. Bawtry Town Council can and do make comments and recommendations – but the decisions are made by DMBC, sometimes disregarding those comments.

The Tickhill Tennis club start their summer season on Thursday 2nd of April 7.00pm to 9.00pm. The weekly sessions through the summer are: Tuesday and Thursday 7.00pm to 9.00pm. Sunday 10.00am to 12.00pm

Now there’s a way to shift the balance of power a bit. The Government’s Localism Act of 2011 introduced Neighbourhood Plans, to give local people more say in what happens. As well as planning policies, the Neighbourhood Plan could include other “non-planning” policies related to such matters as highways, traffic or any other relevant issues that are important to the town. Decisions will still be made by the local Planning Authority – but they have to be consistent with the Neighbourhood Plan – if there is one!

New members welcome to what must be the best value tennis in the U.K.. £50.00 per year which is less than £1.00 per week. Interested come along to a club sessions and have a taster session free or contact Yvonne 0n 01302 611284, Barry on 01302 751160 or Mick on 01302 752180

Nationally, over 1000 communities have begun the process of making a Plan. Locally, these include Tickhill, Armthorpe, Thorne & Moorends, Burghwallis, Harworth & Bircotes, and Auckley. Why not Bawtry? If we are to have a Neighbourhood Plan, it will be “owned” by Bawtry Town Council – but produced by a Steering Group, consisting of local residents and representatives from all groups and organisations within the town, including the Town Council. Bawtry Residents Group has started the ball rolling, and Bawtry Town Council has now committed to the principle of a Plan. The Government has provided for financial support for communities to produce Neighbourhood Plans, and expert advice is also available. It will be a long job though – at least 12 months.

Barry Elderkin, Chairman of Tickhill Lawn Tennis Club, presented Joyce Fairhurst with flowers, on her retirement as Club Secretary at the recent AGM. The Club wish to thank Joyce for 20 years of hard work and devotion to the Club. T

What is a

celebrity? There seems to be a never-ending supply of this creature, ready to try and learn how to ski, dive, ice-skate or dance; answer questions on a quiz programme; sit in a house for 3 weeks; negotiate the challenges of a jungle or bake a cake. The selling point of these programmes is that you get to see famous people trying these various tasks. But most of the time I’ve never heard of these celebrities. The celebrities who sign up for these programmes seem to be folk who have minor parts in soap operas, have had a moderate amount of sporting success or been a ripple on the pop charts 20 years ago. Really famous people never make an appearance – when did you last see Bono, Judy Dench or David Beckham attempt a rumba? Exactly. It seems to me that a celebrity is someone who has been on television a bit and wishes they were on it a lot more (and are prepared to do all sorts of nonsense to be); as opposed to truly famous people who wish they were on it a lot less.

Cynicism aside, perhaps we could all try to be true celebrities to our family and closest friends. Can we stick with them regardless of what happens, can we sacrifice our desires so that theirs can be fulfilled, can we let them know that they are truly precious to us? Jesus Christ said something about this; “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.” If someone is prepared to die for you then you know you really are important; a true VIP. The central declaration of the Christian faith is that Jesus willingly laid down His life for us individually - could there be a greater celebrity status than that?

RUN MUM RUN! Parenting brings untold joy. It also brings a rather large amount of stress! Unfortunately, this stress reduces our ability to think clearly, be organised, make good decisions and complete tasks. The good news is that this process can be reversed in just 15 minutes! We know that exercise regulates stress and energy hormones and the benefits of exercise are well documented. BUPA recently conducted a survey to investigate the effects on a specific group – mums! They asked 500 mums to run for 15 minutes a day and compared their responses with 500 non-running mums. A massive 79% of mums surveyed said they felt running for 15 minutes a day had made them a better parent. Running mums found it easier to juggle everyday tasks and had more energy. 86% of those who ran said they felt in control of life most of the time compared with just 50% of non-runners. One of the barriers to exercise was time with 1/3 of non running mums saying that they struggled to find time to exercise. However, the mums who ran reported actually spending more quality time with their children which supports the argument that you need to make time to gain time. Looking to the future, your activity levels now will influence your children’s lifestyle choices both now and in the future so 15minutes a day really is a worthwhile investment. It’s unlikely that running is the only exercise to provide such benefits but running is probably the most convenient way for most people to exercise intensely for 15 minutes. So, how about turning the school run into a life changing run?

A big day for Misson community Saturday 28th February was a busy day for the Misson Community Centre – opening at 9.30am there was already a queue of volunteers to set up the presentations for the Neighbourhood Plan and to give further details on the scoping for the planning application for the exploratory fracking well at Misson Springs An efficient team set up all the stands and the information that was to inform anyone who attended and ready for 10am as advertised on emails and posters. As the minutes ticked by, no one had arrived in the first 45 minutes so consolation for the early start was achieved with tea and biscuits. Just after 11 and the first visitor arrived, quickly followed by twenty more – by noon the room was full of people learning about Misson, the Neighbourhood Plan, Fracking and chatting over a cup of tea whilst they completed the feedback Of particular interest to everyone was the view of Misson from the Drone over the village last summer, heritage and the history of families and occupations

from the mid 1600’s, old photos of the village, opportunity for enhanced internet connection, housing developments and the kind and quantity of residential properties that people would like. By close at 2pm nearly seventy people had attended, 50 questionnaires had been completed giving a valuable insight into the kind of village that people want to develop over the next twenty years. Consultations for the first phase will conclude with feedback from Misson Preschool and Misson School If anyone wasn’t able to attend the Local Community event but would like to contribute to the plan contact David Hobson 01302 710680 The next stage over the next two months is to draft the policies that will be part of the Plan prior to further consultations to ensure that we have captured the thoughts and wishes of the Parishioners and Businesses in Misson T

Methodist Minister Dear Friends,

NORTHERN RACING COLLEGE

There is a story of a black South African woman who stood in an emotionally charged courtroom listening to white police officers acknowledge the atrocities they had perpetrated in the name of apartheid. Officer van de Broek accepted that he was guilty for the death of her son. He and his police friends had shot her eighteen-year-old son at point-blank range. They partied while they burned his body, turning it over on the fire until it was ashes.

(with Doncaster College)

Eight years later, this same policeman and his friends arrived to seize her husband. Hours later, van de Broek came to fetch the woman. He took her to a woodpile where her husband lay bound. She was forced to watch as they poured petrol over his body and ignited the flames that consumed his body. The last words her husband said were “Forgive them.”

Fun for all the family …… Northern Racing College together with Doncaster College Animal Care Department, are putting on their annual show and open day on Sunday May 17th.

As van de Broek stood awaiting judgement, the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission asked the woman what she wanted. The woman stated, “Mr. van de Broek took all my family away from me, and I still have a lot of love to give. Twice a month, I would like for him to come to the ghetto and spend a day with me so I can be a mother to him.” That was not all. She added, “I would like Mr. van de Broek to know that he is forgiven by God and that I forgive him, too. I would like someone to lead me to where he is seated so I can embrace him and he can know my forgiveness is real.” As the elderly woman was led across the courtroom, van de Broek fainted. The story of Good Friday rings a bell in this story. Jesus was tortured and crucified amongst two thieves. Whiles dying on the cross, he said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23: 34). I wonder who has offended you and how you’re dealing with the situation. Yes, humanly speaking, you want to break even with the person but what happens afterwards may be devastating. Other people would want to keep the hurt in themselves and bear the brunt of anger and hatred. That is not the spirit of the Easter season. At Easter, Christians believe that God in the form of his Son Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead after the third day. Through that we are liberated from sin and all its clutches. We are forgiven when we confess and repent from our shortcomings. We can therefore come to God and ask him to help us forgive those who have offended us. We can also ask him to help us ask for forgiveness from those we have offended. As you celebrate Easter, I wonder if I can suggest to you to consider reconciling with people who have offended you in the past so that you may have the peace you need in your life. Have a blessed Easter season.

Newsletter Bawtry Town Council - APRIL 2015

Useful NUMBERS: Way Section, DMBC, Civic Office, Waterdale, DN1 UB We have photographic evidence dated 1929 of the footpath in use.

Crime in Bawtry

Criminal damage to vehicles 2 Burglary other 1. Anti-social behaviour: 1 x parking complaint 1 x rowdy inconsiderate (due to night time economy)

Planning

We have been advised that a planning application has been logged at DMBC to change the use of the footpath outside the Crown Hotel. It is proposed to use the land as an extension of the hotel’s facilities, i.e. to place tables and chairs in the area and erect a glass balustrade on the footpath, which is adjacent to the town council’s pay and display facility. Bawtry Town Council has objected to this application as the footpath is well used and to remove it would place pedestrians in danger. We urge residents to give evidence of use on a form for prescriptive rights of a public right of way. This can be achieved by completing a Public Right of Way Evidence form which can be downloaded from the town council’s website – www.bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk under the heading PRWEF. The completed forms should then be forwarded to Public Rights of 56

Bawtry Mayflower School With the resignation of the school crossing warden for Bawtry Mayflower School on Station Road, DMBC is seeking applications for the post. We regard this role as very important due to the high volume of traffic on that road. Interested persons should apply to Nancy Higgins at Doncaster MB Council, telephone: 01302 736000..

Neighbourhood Plan

A group has been set up to develop a Neighbourhood Plan which would give our community better control of planning decisions within the Bawtry area. If you are interested in becoming involved with this plan please contact David Kirkham, 15 Pemberton Grove, Bawtry, telephone 07703 804699, or email: davidjkirkham@gmail.com.

Highway Issues If you have any problems with the signage, roads or pavements in Bawtry you can contact highways at DMBC on 736000 who will record all concerns.

The South Yorkshire support group of Myasthenia Gravis Association (now known as MYaware ) would like to thank the people of Tickhill, Harworth, Bircotes and beyond for supporting us at the Tickhill late night shopping event (where we were outside the Tickhill Parish Room, thank-you Janice). On that night we raised £49.40 with a secret tombola. On the 13th December the management at Cherry Lane Garden Centre granted our request for a collection where we collected £106.18, thank-you to the management and customers of Cherry Lane. A quick reminder of who we are: - We support people with myasthenia and their families, increase public and medical awareness of the condition and raise funds for research and support staff, MGA has been around since May 1976.We are the only charity for Myasthenia in the UK. For further information :- www.myaware.org.

Myaware is one of the partner charities in the new Yorkshire Half Marathon taking place in Sheffield on the 12th April, as such we have some guaranteed places available free to anyone who will pledge to raise £100 for Myaware. If you are interested please contact Linda McDonald on 01325 308180 or email linda.mcdonald@ myaware.org We will supply a running vest and a fundraising and information pack. If you would prefer to sponsor a runner, the evening supervisor Chris at Cherry Lane Garden Centre is running for us so next time you go there you are welcome to leave sponsorship for him. We also need volunteers on the day to be Marshalls (from 7.30am) this would probably be an ideal activity for students to have on their personal statements, again contact Linda. T

Bawtry Running Men On the weekend of the London Marathon (25 and 26 April), Gav Scott, Paul Savage, Nik Pratap & Andy Hayward are taking on the daunting challenge of running two half-marathons in two successive days around Bawtry. This is a challenge that none of us have come close to achieving before – some (not all ) of us have completed single half-marathons in the past. The step up to doing two over the course of weekend will introduce us all to the horrors of ice baths, cramp and a long period of recovery! We plan to run one ½ Marathon on the Saturday morning and the other on the Sunday afternoon. The route is one that we have mapped out ourselves and passes through Bawtry, Finningley and Austerfield. Paul is our local vicar and so we will be setting off from the local church on the Sunday after he has delivered his service, hopefully in full lycra running kit! 58

BAWTRY TODAY

Our inspiration for this event comes from one of Nik’s closest friends – Peter Howarth who tragically lost his little daughter Pippa on April 10 2014. Pete is running the London marathon this year to raise money for Child Bereavement UK. All of our fundraising will go to Peter’s cause and will support his target of £5000 for the big race. We originally set ourselves a target of raising £500.00 and we have already managed to smash that! Our next target is £2000.00! Which we firmly believe with the support of Bawtry we can exceed. No contribution is too small so please sponsor us for whatever you can – every penny will be a major motivator to the four of us, will support Pete and will go to an extremely worthwhile cause. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. https://www.justgiving.com/ BawtryRunningMen T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278 | www.facebook.com/todaymags
