Welcome to

OCTOBER OPEN MONTH

the October 2015 edition

www.wsnl.co.uk/youmatter

“Listen! the wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves, We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!” - Humbert Wolfe I am always just a little bit sad as the nights begin to draw in. I think it is the realisation that another summer has gone by, and that once again I haven’t managed to spend as much time enjoying the outdoors as I had planned to. It is also the thought of needing jumpers, coats and boots to be able to step outside the front door, I am far happier in short sleeves and sandals! Maybe one day I will move somewhere with a sunnier climate for more of the year, but in the meantime I will have to be satisfied with planning for next summer. This month we celebrate the 100th issue of Bawtry Today. Bawtry Today was the 3rd magazine I launched back in 2007 and it quickly grew with the support of local businesses and lots of regular contributors. It has had challenges along the way – I am thinking mainly of when a large newspaper publishing house launched a magazine in the area and gave theirs virtually the same name! Fortunately (for me) it was short lived, and I am incredibly pleased that Bawtry Today continues to be as well received as the other magazines I produce. Long may it continue. We’re delighted and honoured to have been shortlisted for four business awards at the 2015 National Magazine Publisher’s Awards. The awards take place early in October, and I will report back next edition, or you can look out for our facebook updates to see how we get on! The November issue will be delivered to you late October. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th October.

Best wishes, Paula x

Tickhill St Mary’s 2015 Duck Race A big win for Tickhill Under 11’s Congratulations to Tickhill Cricket Club under 11's who won an exciting cup final against Sprotbrough Cricket Club at Bentley Cricket Club. Sprotbrough won the toss and elected to field first, leaving Tickhill with no choice but to set a respectable target. Tickhill now under pressure of setting such a score, excelled with the bat and scored a magnificent 93 for the loss of just 1 wicket, with James Eaton and Oliver Gleadall both retiring on 25, and being ably assisted by Ben Norton who scored an unbeaten 24. Having already lost to Sprotbrough in the league, Tickhill, knew they had to produce an excellent bowling and fielding display due to the quality within the Sprotbrough ranks. This began with an excellent bowling spell by Tickhill's tried and tested opening bowling partnership from the win against Doncaster Town in the Semi Finals of Freddie Haslam and Zac Bates, but the tone was really set by the fielding of Joe Whitaker, Matthew Haslam, Cole Waiton and Matias Pereza-Mason, who all put various parts of their bodies in the way of some thunderous shots by the Sprotbrough batsmen to save valuable runs and to put more pressure on the Sprotbrough batsmen to perform. This then allowed both Mack Warne and Ryan Dickinson to finish the game off with some fantastic death bowling toward the end of the Sprotbrough innings, which resulted in Sprotbrough being restricted to 77 runs for 4 wickets off the allotted 20 overs. Even though the day belonged to Tickhill Cricket Club it is only right and proper that a mention must be made to Sprotbrough Cricket Club, for being part of a fantastic and competitive cup final, which was played to such high standards and in the right spirit. Well done to ALL Tickhill's under 11's squad for achieving the accolade of Doncaster District Knock-Out Cup Winners T

Sunday 11th October at 2pm It’s that time of the year again where almost 1500 small yellow plastic ducks will merrily bob their way along from Tickhill Mill Dam, cheered along by enthusiastic race-goers, and end up at the finishing line along Water Lane The Annual Duck race has been running for more than 2 decades at Tickhill St Mary’s School and is a marked village event. For those unaware of this event the idea is simple: you “sponsor” a plastic duck for £1 and hope it wins the race! There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place as well as some runner up prizes, and there will also be refreshments available for purchase on the day. Tickets will be sold in the village (opposite the library) on the preceding Saturdays (19th, 26th September and 3rd October), will also be available from KSM, and available from pupils of Tickhill St Mary’s School. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Sponsors for this event. Secure your tickets now – tickets are limited and they sell out fast! We hope to see you there!! T

St Mary’s School St Marys Junior Road Safety Officers In September 2014, we became Junior Road Safety Officers. The first thing we did was set up a competition! All the children had to draw clothing that was suitable for winter, but make it bright and colourful. This helped the children know how to dress safely if they were walking in the dark. We also ran other competitions such as making a hedgehog bookmark (linked to staying safe on the roads). If you won, you received certificates as well as lots of cool prizes like keyrings. However, the biggest challenge was the 10 Day Active Challenge. Lots of other schools took part and we all had to work hard to come to school by walking or cycling and ensuring that we stayed safe while we did so. We won! We won a Scooter Pod – in the picture you can see us with it! It is a place to store our scooters when we ride them to school. Now we are mentoring the year 5’s on how to be good Junior Road Safety Officers. We wish them the best of luck! Lauren and Lexie.

Year 3 Visit Creswell Crags On Wednesday 9th September, Y3 Hansby were very excited as we went to Creswell Crags to learn about cave men and the Stone Age. We were in 2 different groups – the Mammoth tribe and the Lion tribe. Activities included science experiments, survival skills and a cave tour. The Science experiments were really good. We learnt about how to test for calcium in different rocks, which rocks were the hardest by doing a scratch test, how acid or alkali the rocks are using indicator paper and which rocks were the most permeable. Survival skills included throwing spears at a ‘reindeer’, building a den out of branches and trying to make a fire by rubbing sticks together. We really enjoyed the survival skills although we didn’t manage to make any fire, although several of us managed to hit the reindeer! The cave tour involved wearing a hard hat which had a head torch on and meeting Am – a cave woman – who showed us into her cave and told us a story about a cave girl called Lootie and a cave lion. She had 30 people in her tribe and she hunted mammoths with a spear. At one point we all turned our head torches off and it was pitch black! What a great start to our topic; the whole day was really exciting from start to finish! Safi, Lilia, Alexia, Charlie and George Y3 Hansby

A Portrait of the Queen Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II often has a portrait commissioned to mark special occasions. To commemorate the Queen’s achievement of becoming the longest reigning British monarch school held a portrait competition. All pupils were invited to enter the competition and the quality of the entries was excellent. It was a difficult decision for Mrs Fisher and Mr Perkins our judges but after much deliberation they awarded the three book token prizes as follows:

Key Stage 1 : Sam Henderson - Class 1 14

What are we doing now at Wilsic Road Day Nursery? Every term we strive to give our children the broadest possible range of experiences we can! We’ve already been to the Forest School in High Melton this term where the children cooked outside, built dens, did a Hungry Caterpillar trail learned about animal habitats and travelled by bus where the children were complimented on their good behaviour by passers by. Our adventures see us travelling all over the place. With strict staffing ratios always in place we know that the children are in good hands and enjoying everything that our region has to offer. Every child is individually planned for and has a Key Person along with an Assessment Document just like you would have at a school nursery. The key difference between us and a school nursery is our much higher staffing ratios which allow us the freedom to go out whenever an opportunity arises. The Nursery itself is full of activities, experiences and equipment to really stretch your child’s imagination. We recently added an artificial grass lawn, a mud kitchen and a new climbing frame for the babies. We offer funded places for 2 year olds along with the 3-4 year old funded places. Ring us for information and an application form to see if you qualify for 15 hours free at the Nursery. We’re open all year round from 8am to 6pm. We are absolutely certain we can provide fun filled days for children to enjoy with our generous staffing ratios and ever expanding range of activities!

community Dear Oldcotes Residents.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR DISTRICT COUNCILLOR – BARRY BOWLES BLYTH WARD First of all a big thank you to all those who voted for me on May 7th; I very much appreciate your support. I have enjoyed the past 4 years and been very pleased to represent you on Bassetlaw District Council and also to make representations to Nottinghamshire County Council on your behalf, so I really did want to carry on. During the last 7 months I held a Councillor’s Surgery on the third Saturday of the month at Barnby Memorial Hall, Blyth, and Oldcotes, Styrrup and Scrooby Village Halls where people could come and talk to me and bring any concerns that they felt that I may be able to assist with. The dates were published in newsletters and on noticeboards around the Ward. However, virtually nobody came to see me! I am prepared, with the approval of Bassetlaw Council who pay the Hire Fees, to continue with these surgeries. Now is your chance to have your say :-Is there a need for these surgeries in your area? Could they be less than every month? Would they be better by appointment only? Any other suggestions? Whether my surgeries continue or not, I am of course, always available for anyone who wishes to consult me. We can discuss matters on the phone, I can visit you or we can meet somewhere of your choice. I also attend most Parish Council Meetings. Having attended public meetings at Oldcotes Village Hall on 19th June and Barnby Memorial Hall Blyth on 22nd June, it is obvious that there is great concern in the villages regarding proposed developments and planning applications. If you have any comments supporting or opposing these, and feel that I can assist in any way, do please contact me. I leave these matters to you and hope to receive your responses in due course. My phone number is 01909 732121 and my e-mail address is barry.bowles@bassetlaw.gov.uk I look forward to working with you and for you, for the next 4 years.

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

Does this sound familiar? “ We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children” These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home.

Care Costs If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills. Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Also available: APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.

Do you qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

And so to bed…. The subject of beds has cropped up in our clinic several times recently with the most common question being “Do you think it’s my bed causing the problem [with my back/neck]”. Here are some tips to help you decide if, indeed, your bed could be creating issues for your musculoskeletal system… • If your mattress is more than 7 years old then it’s time to assess whether it’s still doing it’s job…log on to The Sleep Council website and take their quick mattress MOT test.

One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.

Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain

• Don’t take too much notice of manufacturer’s product descriptions – this is unregulated. For example, the use of the term ‘orthopaedic’ generally just means extra firm. • There is no right or wrong when it comes to mattress firmness. Either extreme is unlikely to be comfy. Your mattress should be supportive enough to take the weight of your body without sagging, but firm enough for you to turn with ease. • A quick indicator to check if the firmness of the mattress is suitable for you is to lie down on your back and slide your hand between the mattress and your lower back. If the mattress is too hard, the gap will be large…too soft and it will be difficult to push your hand through. • When making a new purchase you (and your sleeping partner) need to test the mattress for AT LEAST 10 minutes in your USUAL SLEEP POSITION and may even want to take along your own pillows… …now there’s another story! Look out for some top tips on pillows in next month’s edition…

community Hello from the Mayflower Sanctuary, we are still in the throes of building work, which seems to be going on forever, but I do think we can see a light at the end of the tunnel. We are all so grateful to Mr Grainger for leaving this money to us in order that we are now able to make much needed improvements to our site. We will be able to house more dogs in better facilities which is also wonderful for our kennel staff too. As always we have some beautiful dogs and cats in our Sanctuary all waiting for a home they can call their own. It is such a shame that some of our residents are overlooked for various reasons. Maybe they don’t make the best of themselves in a kennel environment. But please be aware that once out of this environment most dogs and cats adjust really well and make wonderful pets. If you would like to be introduced to any of our residents please ask our kennel assistants and they will be happy to give you any information you require. Now a little about our two ‘joined at the hip’ lovely dogs. Bruno is a yellow Lab x and Roxy is a Terrier x. They have been with us for nearly a year. They have lived the whole of their life before that together. Unfortunately they came to us as their owner was too ill to take care of them. Bruno loves his walks with Roxy, however Roxy will not eat or walk without Bruno. A member of staff took them both home for a holiday and they loved curling up on the sofa having cuddles and being pampered. They are very chilled dogs. Unfortunately Bruno has been attacked by another dog so is very wary of other dogs. For this reason we feel that they would only be suitable to re-home with no other dogs and older children as they are both around eight years old they would adapt better to teenagers. They are both affectionate and love to be groomed. Although Bruno doesn’t show himself very well in kennels out of them he is back to his chilled lovable self. If you feel you could give these two beautiful dogs a home, however they must go together, please call us and come along and meet them. When thinking about adopting a cat or dog it is important to consider vet bills throughout your pets life. Pet insurance can be so helpful if you have an expensive vet bill. However check out the small print

as there are lots of different companies out there. Pet Plan is one of the best but it is always worthwhile comparing the market. On a completely different note we would like to thank many people recently that think of us when their loved ones pass away. Instead of sending flowers families are asking that mourners make donations to our charity. This is a very humbling thing to do, and we would like to thank families for thinking of us. The last donation we received was from a lovely lady in Tickhill whose husband recently passed away, she and her late husband are long standing supporters of our charity. This wonderful gesture was a very sizeable £ 232 Thank you again we are all very grateful. Now onto fund raising, we have a Pampered Chef Party in the reception area at the Sanctuary on 8th October starting at 7.00pm. Tickets are £2.00 and include tea, coffee, biscuits and food tasting. We will also be holding a raffle and tombola. Please call the sanctuary and leave a message if you would like tickets. 01302 711330. Please come along and join us, we hope this will be a very entertaining evening. Don’t worry I am sure they won’t be asking anyone to cook, only taste! If you are looking for that special pet please come along and see us, we will be happy to put you in the right direction. Bye for now. Margaret Godley

Name: Eric & Ernie Sex: Male July 2015 Date into care: 18 months Age: Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: Only Lucy Lived with children: Yes

Both male , 18 months old Eric and Ernie originally came into care as babies with their Mum and were adopted as youngsters. They have lived a very happy life with their owners and existing cat, Lucy. Unfortunately their Mum has had an accident which means that she is unable to care for them any more. It was a heartbreaking decision but one that was best for the boys and Lucy. Eric and Ernie are very close so a home together is essential. It would be a dream come true if they could all go together. Could you offer these guys the home they deserve?

& what’s going on - OCTOBER 2015 HILARY

Wave at YSP Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15 Exhibition: Open Art : 17 October to 13 December – come and buy your Christmas presents from this ever popular exhibition of regional talent.

If you find yourself at a loose end this month, Dear Reader, and in need of a good stomp over good Yorkshire countryside, then can I recommend that you pop up to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (accessible by public transport or by car) and catch the last of the two major Summer exhibitions before they close. The Henry Moore exhibition was a marvellous thing, with a number of works that I had not previously met. The show was beautifully hung, the large galleries full of sculpture, drawings and prints. In one gallery, as you entered, you were eyeballed by a large reclining nude carved in a white limestone she was echoed by another across the room in made plaster. Many of you saw this exhibition and have told me how much you enjoyed it. The Tony Caro show continues through this month and is worth visiting, with a range of work from his long career, from the brightly coloured early pieces to some of the larger corten steel works, the best of which is up in the Longside gallery at the far end of the park (mini bus available) . Many of the pieces are from his own collection (Barford collection) that I imagine, were for him seminal sculptures, that he wanted to hang on to and revisit in his own time. Throughout his working life he worked with Pat, one of many assistants, who would, at the completion of a sculpture be asked to cut it up and turn it into a manageable transportable kit. Have a look at the larger works and observe the ingenuity of this de-construction. There are also some portrait heads, an excellent one of the critic Clement Greenberg and one of his wife, which if it had been made of me… well in her shoes, I would have been straight down to the solicitors’ office! This autumn the Tower of London’s Poppies come to YSP. Yorkshire Sculpture Park until January and until 1 November Caro in Yorkshire . Sir Anthony Caro (1924– 2013). Wave – the Poppies from the Tower of London are touring and to be seen at YSP www.ysp.co.uk

FRACKING So what is fracking? Shale gas is the natural gas found in shale rock over a mile underground. It is extracted by hydraulic fracturing which involves injecting water at high pressure to create tiny cracks so the shale gas can flow. There are two informative sites at www.gov.uk/guidance/oiland-gas-licensing-rounds which, as the title suggests provides information about the latest Oil and Gas licensing rounds. The second is www.gov.uk/government/publications/about-shalegas-and-hydraulic-fracturing-fracking which provides guidance about shale gas and hydraulic fracturing (Fracking). The amount of information available is overwhelming and very difficult to summarise. However, the information does indicate that Tickhill and its environs could be affected. One thing is certain and that is that the Government is determined to encourage the extraction of shale gas. There are several maps within the web sites and one shows the areas that are currently under license and one can assume that the operator who is licensed can, after consultation with the Local Authority, begin exploration. One map shows that almost the entire area from Brigg in the east to Cadeby in the west and from Newton on Trent in the south to the Humber in the north is currently under licence. Tickhill lies just off the centre of this area. The map also shows that gas has been discovered at Everton which is only seven miles east of Tickhill and that there is a gas field at Hatfield some 12 miles north of Tickhill According to the web sites (and there is a lot of information provided and worth looking at) • Exploration, which takes some two to six months, involves the erection of a pad and a 30m tall drilling rig. This is followed by drilling, fracking, carrying equipment, chemicals and water to and from the site. • Moving into production takes six months to two years and involves drilling more wells, fracking and carrying equipment, chemicals and water to and from the site

B Luke is going for gold! Luke Ashby of Auckley, Doncaster has been selected to represent England at the ICO Kick Boxing World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany being held between 22nd – 26th October 2015. Despite being just 8 years old Luke recently passed his 1st Dan Black Belt. He has been competing in tournaments all over the UK for just over 18 months now and this year become both a British and European Champion at his weight category. He is a great asset to Team England and is a potential medal winner for his country. However, this is an amateur sport and all competitors have to be self-financed. Competing in competitions across the country on a weekly basis is a costly pastime, but more so to attend the World Championship where each competitor has to raise they own air fares / accommodation in order to attend.

We will, through contact with DMBC, continue to monitor the situation and keep residents informed of any plans or proposals that will directly affect them.

Any financial support you can offer will be greatly appreciated by all involved and there are lots of sponsorship opportunities available that we would love to discuss with anyone interested. Hopefully the opportunity to support a local lad flying the flag for Doncaster appeals, I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

MAKE A PROPERTY

TRUST WILL The

Protect the inheritance for children from previous relationship. Protect up to half of the home value from care fees. Protect your property for the next generation.

Benefit

How do they work? For Property Trust Wills to be effective you must own your property jointly with your partner. Most partners own their home as joint tenants. This means when one dies the home will automatically pass to the survivor. We will alter the ownership from joint tenants to tenants in common. This means you own a distinct share which you can then leave into the Property Trust which grants the surviving spouse a life interest in the home for their lifetime. Should the surviving spouse need to go into a care home then only their share of the home is taken into account not the whole. Should your spouse/ partner remarry

or make a new Will after your death then your share of the home is protected for your beneficiaries. With arranged Care Home costs currently in the region of £600 per week, the cost of £300.00 is a small price to pay for the severance of joint tenancy and Wills. ingredients 8 Slices of pancetta or streaky bacon Olive Oil 1 garlic clove finely chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 1 medium onion, cut finely and chopped 75ml white wine 4 portions of haddock fillet skin on Salt and black pepper to season 500g frozen peas 1 lemon 3 springs of mint chopped 100ml Greek yogurt to serve

1

Preheat the oven to 200 c, 400 f, gas mark 6.

2 Finely chop the pancetta into a fine

dice(reserving a piece to go on top of each piece of fish at the end), heat in an ovenproof pan over a medium heat. Add a little olive oil and fry the pancetta for a few minutes until golden brown and beginning to crisp up. Add the garlic and red chili and fry for 1-2 minutes until fragrant and aromatic. Add the chopped onion and turn down the heat, cook the onion for 5 minutes until softened without too much colour. When the onion has softened, add the white wine and allow to simmer for 1 minute. Remove the pan from the heat. This stage of the dish could be done in advance.

3 Heat in a heavy bottomed pan over a medhigh heat, pat the haddock fillets dry with kitchen paper and then season them. The

method pancetta will be salty, so do not over season at this stage. Add a little oil to the pan and place the haddock fillets in skin side down.

4 Cook the fish for about 4 minutes or until the skin is golden brown and crispy. Do not touch the fish until the edge of the fish skin is crispy, then carefully turn the fillets over and cook on the flesh side for 2 minutes.

5 Mix the peas with the onion mixture, place the haddock fillets, crispy side up in the pan with the peas. Place a slice of pancetta on each piece of fish and put in the oven and bake. Bake for 5 minutes until the pancetta on the top is crispy.

6 Remove from the oven and carefully plate the fish. Squeeze the lemon on to the peas and mix together with the chopped mint. Serve with mashed potatoes.

Ted Elliott Millennium Cricket Knock Out Competition Possibly the wettest day of the summer turned out to be August Bank Holiday Monday, our finals day! There was no chance of playing and it has proved impossible to re-arrange the games due to third team league matches being followed by end of season work on the square. With the light failing by 7.30pm there was no chance of completing an evening match, so we have decided to finals over to the Spring. We will agree a suitable date with the cricket club and hope for decent weather. Getting the date well advertised should encourage the sort of crowd we would like for finals day.

OF THE TICKHILL AND COLLIERY SURGERY (Aiming to help you, to be in control of your

health and healthcare.)

Schools are back for a new term so we are about to enter the “cold and flu season” and with that in mind the following update from The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) is very apt.

An event focusing on Children’s Health will be held in Harworth in Spring 2016, details have yet to be finalised. You can contact the PPG via the comments boxes in both surgeries or at tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com T

NICE states that colds and flu CANNOT be treated with antibiotics as they are VIRAL however they state the spread of such illnesses can be reduced by correct handwashing after using the toilet, before eating, before touching the eyes or mouth and after handling animals They ask that all children are taught, and all adults follow, the following hand washing tips

Step 1 – wet hands under tepid running water before applying soap

Step 2 – coat all surfaces of hands with the soap and rub vigorously for 10-15 seconds paying particular attention to fingers, thumbs, and areas between the fingers, then rinse thoroughly in running water.

Step 3 – Dry thoroughly. These guidelines have been issued amid fears that unless action is taken over the misuse of antibiotics, treatment resistant bacteria could kill more people than currently die from cancer by 2050. We would remind patients who qualify, to book an appointment for a vaccination against ‘Flu.

Terrific Tulips If I could grow only one type of flower then it would have to be the tulip. Harbingers of warmer days, the choice available is mind-blowing. There are frilly parrot tulips bearing fringed petals, sturdy fat-flowered types and graceful plants with lily-like blooms. They are also tremendously accommodating. You can plant them much later than daffodils and narcissi because they don’t need to start producing roots so early. In fact you can plant them from now until Christmas! My mother uses them as annuals and rips them up after flowering but I can’t bear to do that so I plant them deeply and leave them in the garden where they return happily year on year. If you want to use them as disposable bedding you only need to plant them about 10cm / 4 inches deep. If, like me, you treat them as old friends then plant them 23cm / 9 inches deep and they won’t disappoint you.

Pot Luck Tulips are wonderful in containers. As a guide, a 25-30cm / 10-12 inch diameter pot will accommodate a dozen bulbs. For a larger 47.5cm / 19inch pot use 16 –18 bulbs. Cover the base with at least 5cm / 2inches of drainage material and 12cm / 5 inches of soil-less multi-purpose compost. Lay the bulbs in an inner and outer circle making sure that no bulb touches either another, or the outside of the pot. Fill the pot with compost to within 2.5cm / 1 inch of the rim. I finish pots off with strips of daisies or anemones planted around the edge in colours which complement the tulips. Water everything in but shelter the pot from heavy rain so it doesn’t become waterlogged and never water in frosty weather. I use water-retaining granules mixed in with the compost. These help to maintain soil moisture throughout the dormant season. Feed the daisies or anemones throughout their flowering season in the Autumn and the Spring and you should be rewarded with a beautiful display sometime in April or May. I love to plant containers of tulips by my front door. I have a red door so choose something like Tulipa ‘Apeldoorn’ in yellow and red varieties underplanted with red daisies. If you have a blue or green door you might like to try Tulipa ‘Angelique’ (pale pink) underplanted with pink anemones. Or how about Tulipa ‘Bleu Aimable’ a brilliant purple/blue variety?

Tickhill & District Lions Club Our ‘Summer Bash’ evening of music and food in marquees at the Scarbrough Arms on 26th June made a final profit of ÂŁ987 but the Lions have decided that the plans of the Doncaster Detection Trust are so important to every person in south Yorkshire and Bassetlaw that we should make this figure up to ÂŁ5000 from funds accumulated.

raises funds towards administration costs like paying for refreshments for visitors. The winner is asked to nominate a charity to which our club makes a donation of ÂŁ50 if agreed by the members present. Two recent nominations agreed have produced cheques for the Cancer Detection Trust so that a total of ÂŁ6164 has been donated in recent weeks.

Additionally a local Tickhill ‘Friend of Lions’ 69 year old John Godfrey decided he would use his love of swimming to try to raise funds for the same charity. Known to a number of groups through his love of quizzes he expressed an aim to swim 100 lengths of the Edlington Sports Centre pool in an hour. With the swim timed and lengths counted by Lion Dave Fenton, John achieved his target in 59mins on 28th July. He did very well collecting ÂŁ964 which Tickhill Lions decided to add ÂŁ100 to taking him over the thousand. John wishes to thank the staff at the pool for their hospitality and all those who have supported his swim.

Methodist Minister

Dear Friends, Current events in Europe and other parts of the world have made me to reflect on the issue of compassion in my life again. During the times of reflection, one question that kept coming to me was, ‘how do I become more compassionate in this world?’ One of the answers was to look at the lives of compassionate people like Ghandhi, Mother Theresa and Jesus Christ. As I looked at these lives, I had to settle on some good reasons. Jesus, for example, was passionate about people, loved God’s creation, and was generous. He also had a painful life to the extent that the Roman soldiers killed him. In addition, Jesus did not blame people, was sensitive, and sacrificed his life for people. I concluded that it takes a lot of sacrifice to be compassionate. One writer has defined compassion as the ‘quality of being able to get to the skin of another’. Compassion is very demanding and it involves being with the person or doing something for the person.

I am not suggesting that you physically go to the Mediterranean or the plains and hilly countryside of Europe to walk with people from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of Africa. Neither am I suggesting that you leave your comfy homes and sleep rough with others on the streets of Doncaster. Some people choose to do that and is commendable. However, most of you may have been part of the backlash of responses that forced the Prime Minister to make a U-turn on this issue of refugees a few days ago. I wonder whether we may need to do more to ‘get to the skin’ of these innocent and weary people. To remind you again, sacrifices come in many forms – financially, emotionally and physically. As a member of a community that has so much to spare as compared to the refugees, the homeless

people on our streets, and the poor people living in parts of our communities, I wonder if it is time for you to consider the words of the Theologian John Wesley:

“Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can”. There are many ways in doing ‘all the good you can’. One way is to respond to the appeals from the churches and other agencies, as well as the media, and ask God to direct your heart and mind as to the right way to act. To conclude, I wonder if you may want to pray with me the following prayer of compassion by Henri Nouman: “Dear God, I am so afraid to open my clenched fists! Who will I be when I have nothing left to hold on to? Who will I be when I stand before you with empty hands? Please help me to gradually open my hands and to discover that I am not what I own, but what you want to give me.” Amen. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely, Rev. Tickhill Horticultural Society The 28th Annual show on September 5th was opened at 2pm by Mrs Ann Carroll of Lockwood’s Florists following her judging commitments during the morning. To complete her day Ann presented the trophies later in the afternoon.

3. Eatons cup for most points in the Vegetable Section - Arron Botterill

The show covers a wide range with fruit, vegetables, flowers, floral art, baking, preserves, needlework and other handicrafts, photography, art and children’s sections.

5. Mary Paulucy Presidents Cup for the most points in the Handicraft Section – Jan Kennedy & Annette Hetherington

During the afternoon the Pet show attracted a wide range of dogs and one rabbit for the 3 classes, the ‘most loveable’, ‘happiest’ and ‘scruffiest’ pets. All the pets were very well behaved, with plenty of tail wagging and, of course many youngsters were far more interested in pets than plants. Special thanks to Mary Beck and Julie Evans for the difficult task of judging the animals. On a pleasant, dry afternoon members and visitors were able to sit outside enjoying tea and cakes appreciating the Pet Show and enjoying the lively music from the Bramley Brass Youth and Jazz Band and trying their luck on the tombola successfully run by the Estfeld School ladies – thank you ladies for your continued support and the very welcome contribution you made. Thanks also to the young people of the phoenix Explorer Scouts and their leaders who assisted the organising committee in setting gup the show on Friday evening and Saturday morning, assisting through the afternoon with the gate money and catering and then helping to prepare the church and schoolroom for the Harvest Festival Service and celebration lunch the following day. As usual we had a range of top quality judges for the various sections, all very experienced and all very complimentary of the overall standard of entries. Many trophies and other awards were supported by cash and voucher prizes and we are indebted to our many sponsors for their continued kindness. Trophies. 1. Trading Wings for Wheels The 2008(Bawtry) Squadron Air Cadets were privileged to be asked to take part and assist with the Respect Bawtry Charity Car Rally 2015. Respect Bawtry is a charitable drivers group who aim to raise money through using their cars for Respect Carers Awards (www.carerawards.blogspot.com). The Cadets helped marshal drivers and passengers as they made their way up and around the Respect Green Burial Park. The day was kicked off in style as the Cadets stood to attention as War Veteran and fundraiser Ben Parkinson had the first ride of the day. The Cadets then got the chance to be passengers in some of the fantastic classic, vintage, retro and high performance vehicles which where on offer that day. The Cadets themselves also showed their abilities and performed a drill to onlookers just before the Rally started. They then continued their day by promoting and demonstrating what the Air Cadets can offer young people. There was also a flying simulator which attracted lots of youngsters who all seem to dream of flying, especially as there was a Vulcan available, very similar to the one that resides at Finningley. We will also be present and assisting with the Tickhill Grand Prix on September 20th which will have

taken place by the time you read this article. If you think you’d make a great Cadet and are aged over 12yrs, visit our website www.2008aircadets.org.uk Drop us an Email at 2008@aircadets.org or call 01302 711783 on our Parade nights Weds and Fri from 6.45pm-9.15pm T

Tickhill . . . but not TODAY

Tickhill and District Firstly we would like to thank all those members (the majority) who have renewed their memberships in the Library during the summer period, you really do make things much easier for everybody at our AGM – more about that next month. Our Secretary has put together a programme which promises to be partly unconventional and wholly interesting; subjects range from medieval life to knickers. Perhaps not quite appropriate to say that all will be revealed when you come to the meetings! Meantime a new history profile paper has been published by the Society. ‘Sarah Monk 1747-1848’ looks at what was remarkable about her long life, not least how she raised her gifted son on her own after her husband died tragically in Canada. The reasons for Sarah’s move to Tickhill, the respect in which she

Local History Society was held here and the achievements of her son are explored. The paper, price £1, is on sale at KSM.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday October 15th when Sarah Townsend will give a talk entitled “Henry VIII, Victim or Villain?” Those of you who have heard Sarah speak before will know that her talks are sometimes controversial, always interesting and we look forward to a lively evening. As usual the meeting will be held in the Methodist Schoolroom in Northgate starting at 7.30 pm (doors open 7.00 pm) and visitors will be welcome.

Retford Bluebell Wood Support Group invite you to a Coffee Morning in the Buttermarket, Retford Friday 6th November from 10.00am until 2pm. As the days move all too quickly towards the hectic season of Christmas, why not take some time out for yourself and join us for a cup of tea or coffee and scrumptious home-made cake, or linger a little longer for a light lunch of soup and sandwiches. We are delighted “Chocolate Kitchen” will be supporting us again and there will also be stalls offering scarves, jewellery, handbags, books and candles. Naturally, Bluebell Wood Christmas cards will be available, so avoid the rush and buy yours early. Our Buttermarket coffee morning last year was our major fund-raiser; please help us make it an even better one in 2015. The hospice provides eight beautifully appointed bedrooms for children and young adults as well as accommodation for families. As one young girl said, “it’s the best place in the world, it’s better than going on holiday and it helps a lot of sick children. Bluebell Wood makes you feel like you can do anything, they don’t just leave you out and say “you’re too sick to join in”, they find a way to help you do it.” However, it costs over £3 million every year to offer this support and less than 10% statutory is received from government funding so public support is essential. Finally, a few words from one of the parents. “Even though it was a sad time for us, we had happy memories of Emma being at Bluebell Wood. It was the worst time of our lives but it could have been a lot worse without Bluebell Wood.” Thank you for supporting Bluebell Wood. T

Tickhill Town Council - OCTOBER 2015

Tickhill Town Council wishes to thank all the Residents who gave the Neighbourhood Plan the “yes” vote. Now the real hard work of implementation begins and plans are afoot to start the ball rolling. If you have problems with the inconsiderate parking of vehicles will you please report them to: parking.services @doncaster.gov. uk or telephone 736000 so action can be taken. Unfortunately, Tickhill Town Council has no enforcement powers and can only advise. The Council asks you to park with consideration around the Cricket field. It is becoming more and more difficult to pass through with a vehicle and there are concerns that Bus Company will withdraw the service around Alderson Drive. The green around the entrance to Alderson Drive is designated “Green Open Space” and should not be parked upon. The condition of the grass will deteriorate if vehicles continually park on it. Tickhill is a conservation area and the Council are sure that you all wish to keep it as such. Also the Council reminds all residents to cut back any overhanging vegetation, hedging & trees to help reduce obstruction problems and lines of sight for both traffic and pedestrians. Tickhill Town Council would like to say a BIG thank you for all the support they received in the summer with the Children’s Activities. It was a huge success, and No they couldn’t

do it without you. A special Thank you is to be extended to all those who attended from Sir Thomas Wharton Community College as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Scheme and offered support in working with the children. It was down to them that it was a huge success. Funding was finally made available and a lot of outdoor equipment has been purchased for the continuation of the activities next year. This has to be a Partnership and support is continually asked from parents, Sir Thomas Wharton Community College Duke of Edinburgh students and of course D.M.B.C. Stronger Communities Officers See you all next year. Tickhill Town Council reminds you to keep looking at the D.M.B.C. website under the Local Plan and urge you to make comments on any consultations that may affect Tickhill. Tickhill Town Council has been informed that trees recently removed from Beech Avenue because of their dangerous condition are to be replaced. Finally: The Annual Awards will take place in December. Please make your written nominations for The Young Person of the Year Award, Community Award and the Alison Award, to the clerk ASAP; the Selection Committee will be meeting in November.
