the December 2015 edition He who has not Christmas in his heart will never ďŹ nd it under a tree.

Roy L. Smith The Christmas issue already and the last magazine of 2015. It doesn’t seem like a year has passed since I was last writing my Christmas magazine introduction! Once again I am totally disorganised, not a present has been bought, nor a card written, and although I bought my Christmas cards back in August, I have no idea where I put them! Never mind it will all get done, it always does.

As always I will be trying to support my local shops in the run up to Christmas. Details of many such shops and services can be found within these pages and I am sure that all of them appreciate you considering local companies not just at Christmas but all through the year. Finding ways of diverting even just a tiny bit of your spend to Independents is an excellent way of ensuring that our local communities retain their individuality and that we have a large choice of local shops and services for years to come. I am looking forward to relaxing and spending some quality time with my family for a few days between Christmas and New Year, and I am very lucky that I am able to do this. I know that there are a great many people who will be working hard throughout Christmas keeping our hospitals open, caring for our elderly, serving in our armed forces, keeping public transport running and providing numerous other essential services. The January 2016 issue will be delivered to you late December. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Thursday 10th December. December is the month that I squeeze a month’s work into 3 weeks while also preparing for Christmas and my calendar for December is already filling up with extra social events and annual commitments, so once again I do ask that you endeavour to get your items to me on time.

Harworth Colliery Football Club December 2015 Update Hello and welcome all of you to the latest update from Harworth Colliery FC, it will be the last one of 2015 and it’s been as ever an incredibly busy year for all involved, we do hope though that 2016 will herald in a new era for the club and that’s what we are all working hard to do.

Over the past month as well as the usual fitures we have had new sponsors coming into the Club, Viesmann, Greendeal Contracts, SWEDEX saw Blades and JGD Builders who have sponsored the new training and warm up Jumpers. John Dickinson pictured here with nephew Josh and the current Keeper Steve Wibberley who also works for John. He is an ex Colliery player and its great that the place is still close to his heart, huge thanks to all of them for their ongoing support. The last month or so the 1st team have put 4 wins back to back propelling them upto 4th in the league with games in hand, we will go into December having played 9 games away already so if we can get our home form anything like then we can expect to be in the mix which is what we are working towards. We will have a good run of home games coming up so hope we can rely on all of you to get behind us and give the lads the support they deserve. The Reserves have had an up and down month but have progressed through to the next round of the Sheffield Junior Cup, they have a good mix now of Senior players and good young players from the 19’s so well worth a visit to watch if the 1sts are away from home. The Under 19’s will kick off a run of 6 home games on the 2nd of December playing Espial FC and then Sheffield

United on the 9th, that really is one for the diarys and we hope to see a real good number through the turnstiles as we take on the League Ones under 19’s, they will then take on Swallownest on the 16th all 19:45 Kick offs. That leads me nicely onto the Juniors who as they have done all season have been very impressive indeed, the Under 8’s under the management of Adam King and Shaun Kingston are really gelling now as a unit, their games are attracting an excellent following and it really is exciting having a Junior side of this age as we want to see how they progress. For now its all about the enjoyment and the environment they are in. The Under 14’s continue to have an 100% record in the league at the time of writing conceding just 1 goal in 6 games an unreal effort and surely some record. This after going up a league as well so massive well done to all involved and to the parents who help out and support the lads, it really is a true team effort. the Under 15’s also continue in the same vein, they have suffered their only defeat of the season so far but with games in hand we hope can get back to the top of the table, its great to see all the hard work people are putting in paying off and long may it continue. Fundraising as ever plays a big part in allowing us to develop and progress as we are and as ever we will be having our Annual Xmas Raffle, all players will be handed them so please be generous, the draw date is 17th and we also will be at ASDA (thanks to Ann Delaney) on the 5th selling the tickets and taking any donations. It is always a good prize list but if any of you would like to donate a prize or any small business would, then please get in touch, the more the merrier I believe is the phrase! All the up to date news can be found on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page. Keep turning up through the gates as it is hugely appreciated by everyone associated with the club and I will take this oppurtunity to wish you all a very Merry Chrismas and a prosperous New Year, lets hope 2016 really is our year.

Be Sure of a Warm Welcome!

The Group’s meeting was held on 3rd November, with a good turnout. Keith Somers, from Bassetlaw District Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Department, was present to talk to members about the work his department do. They have a service level agreement with A1 Housing, which covers grass cutting, hedge cutting etc around the council owned properties managed by A1 Housing. They also look after the play areas, and sports grounds owned by the council. They regularly turn out to check and clear broken glass left in these areas by mindless vandals, so that the play areas are fit for use by children. They will often be called upon to take down dead trees, but they will never take down healthy trees unless there is risk to life and limb, as trees are necessary for the environment. They will assist in the case of the elderly and vulnerable who may be unable to deal with dead trees, and there is also a service run by A1 Housing (Branching Out), but there is a charge for this service. The police were also in attendance at this meeting, and they were able to assure members that the situation with the bus service around the Bircotes estate is now resolved. Stagecoach wished to thank the residents for their assistance in helping to bring this matter to a successful conclusion, along with the vigilance of the police. There will be some decisions made in December about the future of safer neighbourhood policing, and we will learn more about this at a future meeting. The full police report is reproduced elsewhere in the magazine. The first burial has taken place in the new cemetery. One resident had complained that it could be seen from an upstairs bedroom window! There had been an incidence of a quad bike rider tearing around in the new cemetery at night. It beggars belief that anyone could be so thoughtless in such a place. The owner of neighbouring land will be contacted to make safe the fencing to stop this from happening again. Members are urged to vote to adopt the Neighbourhood Plan on 3 December, which will give us more say in what happens in our town in the future. The next meeting will take place on 1 December, at 10.30 am at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. All are welcome.

F.O.S. The Committee of the Fellowship of the Services 354 Three Counties Mess, very much regret to announce that the above branch is now officially closed. Our last official meeting was on the 02/09/2015. Closure was forced upon us by several factors, the main ones dwindling membership & support, and the increasing age of our membership. We have been faced with this for a long time, and had it not been for a stalwart few would have happened long ago. Some of us have agreed we will continue to meet on a Social basis, each Monday of the month at the Comrades Club at 20:00 hrs. Thanks to the Comrades Club who have been our The Fireworks night on the 30th October hosts for many years. was a huge success. Massive thanks to Fuse The Mess was originally formed in Bawtry in Fireworks and for the Pavilion for funding the 1974, hence the title 3 Counties we have been the Fireworks and keeping the tradition alive. Also only Ex Service Men's organization in Harworth thanks to Jones & Co Solicitors for sponsoring & Bircotes also for many years. Some of our the event as it was excellently attended. T members are to transfer to a Mess in Doncaster and we wish them all well.

Fireworks Thanks

To all our ex members please join us on the first Monday of the month for a drink and a chat. Thank you for your past support and Good Luck & Good health to you all. T

Christmas Lost for words!

Dearr Friends, December is a month of celebrations that are centred on Christmas and New Year. As much as the celebrations continue into the night and sometimes for days, I wonder if we sometimes find time to reflect on the reason(s) for these celebrations. My local dialect has named December ‘Mumu’ which can be translated as ‘dumb’. In other words, the events that bring reasons for the celebrations may amaze us to the extent that we may be lost for words or ‘dumb’ for hours or even days. Lost for words? Yes! Imagine you being Mary, the mother of Jesus. How would you have treated the news of the birth of your firstborn from an angel you have never seen or met? What about Joseph? An innocent bachelor who only wanted to marry the girl he loved but had to be dragged into the mystery of the virgin birth? Lost for words? Yes! If you were the innkeeper, how would you feel after realising that the couple you disregarded and handed them your sheep pen to sleep in, instead of a bed and breakfast room, was the couple God decided to use to bring the Saviour into the world? Lost for words? Yes! Imagine that you were a shepherd who had been written off by society and are only needed when it was time for the temple sacrifices. You are only important for the time when someone wants to buy your sheep or goat and sacrifice it at the temple. I wonder how you would have felt when an angel of God appeared to you in the bright sky on Christmas morning and asked you to hurry and visit the newly born babe, the Saviour of the world. Lost for words? Yes! If you were a wise man how would you have felt when you realised that upon all your wisdom and knowledge you needed the visit of God’s angel and a guiding star to lead you to the baby who had been born as Saviour of the world. 16

Lost for words? Yes, Herod was! Imagine how Herod felt when the wise men told him the news about the birth of the king of the world who will save us from our sins. I wonder how he would think about his authority in the province of Judea in the coming days or years. Lost for words? Yes, I am! I am lost for words because God loved me so much that he brought his only son into the world at Christmas to live and die for me. I wonder how you feel as well realising that the nativity plays, carol services and the celebrations are not all about shopping and parties but God sending his only son into the world to save you from sin. As part of the celebrations of Christmas, the church in your local community, which is always lost for words because of what God has done for this world, is putting up services and nativity plays in December to celebrate the mystery of Jesus’ birth. It is also celebrating the birth of a new year as we look forward to experiencing new things and growth in our lives in the coming year. I wonder if I can use this opportunity to invite you, as well as your family and friends, to look out on your local church notice boards and in the local magazines for where and when you can join in our celebrations. You are always welcome. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year celebration. God bless you. Yours sincerely,

community 2015 will be remembered for good and bad reasons. We have seen an increase in animals requiring help and re-homing for various reasons. This could be that family’s situations alter and they can no longer take care of their animals. Marriage breakups, people going into rented accommodation, losing their jobs when finances then become difficult. Also people going into hospital. All can contribute to the reasons why we are full to overflowing. However this is becoming really hard for us as we only have so much kennel space If you are considering adopting a family pet please consider your life style and the costs involved, obviously life changes and no-one knows what is around the corner. This is why for some people it is important to take out pet insurance. There are some good companies out there, but always check the small print, and always ask if the policy you are interested in is a life policy. At our Sanctuary we have some beautiful dogs, puppies, cats and kittens, various breeds and cross breeds all looking for their forever loving homes. Previously I talked about Roxy and Bruno the inseparable dogs that we needed to re-home together, well they have now found 2 special people to love and take care of them. Our staff were very emotional when they went to their new home together. We are told they are doing well and looking forward to their Christmas dinner. We have quite a few fundraising events going on over the December period. We will be in Doncaster town centre on the 5th and 20th December please come along and say hello. We love to listen to all the stories you have about your pets. We will have some of our residents with us, so we are hoping for dry days. We are also collecting outside Pets at Home over the North Bridge in December (if it’s cold we will be

Finding a forever home inside) the staff are always lovely and very welcoming. A big thank you to the lady that arranged a Pampered Chef Party for us, this was a huge success and a really fun night. There was lots of tasty food to sample and we raised money too which was a bonus. We hope everyone has a very special fun Christmas, and a big thank you to everyone that donates to our Sanctuary. If you would like to contribute to help keep our Sanctuary open please just look at the website on the first page just click donate, every penny is greatly appreciated. Or if you would like to pop extra black bags, wash powder or washing up liquid in your trolley when you are shopping these are the things we use the most off. It takes £600 per day to stay open and our vets bills for a year are in excess of £40,000 unbelievable I know but these are the facts. Can I say a big thank you to our Managers, kennel staff and volunteers that give up most of their Christmas to make sure all our dogs and cats are fed and enjoy their Christmas too. All it takes now is to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year. Bye for now

She is a little cat with a huge personality. Extremely affectionate but with a naughty streak ! She loves to play and is always purring round your feet for a fuss or a game. Unfortunately she doesn’t like to share and wouldn’t tolerate another cat or a dog in her new home. If you would like a cat that’s loving but with bags of character then look no further. (Aiming to help you, to be in control of you

It’s been a very busy year, full and highs and lows. We have held two Health Information Events had a stall at the Tickhill Gala, hosted a Dementia Friends information session and been a presence at the flu clinic where information leaflets were handed out. As patients we have all mourned the death of Dr. Cook (retired) and Dr. Sheehan and seen Dr. Saunders take retirement from partnership of The Practice. We also welcomed Dr. De Silva to the practice when he started in August.

Initial feedback from CQC regarding the practice was good but at the time of writing the report is not yet finalised. We will let you have more information as it becomes available. Everyone on The PPG wishes all readers a very merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year.

In October The Practice was inspected by The Care Quality Commission (CQC), some of you will have seen the advanced notice of the inspection on The Practice Website. Doctors, other Practice staff and in particular The Practice Manager were questioned, systems were checked and input by patients was welcomed; with patients during the run up, and on the day of the inspection given the opportunity to make written comment about the practice and the care they receive. Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out a response form.

8th & 11th November

The chair and secretary of the PPG were questioned about the work of the PPG, their links with the practice and how they reach out to the rest of the patients.

Again Thank YOU Best wishes

Thank you Thank you for the collection that was raised for my family by the whole community of Harworth and Bircotes. This was to pay for funeral arrangements for my late brother Richard Pencott who died on the 24th June this year. ÂŁ1700 was raised which is quite astonishing when you consider that Harworth and Bircotes is suffering quite difficult times with unemployment and poverty. This goes to show that if Harworth and Bircotes lose one of its own, as a community it can pull together. I would like to thank everyone that contributed no matter how much, every penny has made my family feel very humble and we are very grateful. Thank you

Bonfire Night It was great to see so many people attending the bonfire and fireworks at the Cricket Club on 7th November. The record crowd responded brilliantly to the quality of the fireworks and with superb support from the bars, the barbecue and the novelty sales outlets a good time was had by all. Many thanks to the Cricket Club, the volunteers who helped in the running of the event and everyone who supported the evening with kind donations. We apologise to any local residents who may have had difficulty getting their car off their drive due to poor parking on the road outside – this will be considered in our plans for next year, though there may be little we can do. garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Which Christmas Tree? When we were kids my brother christened our rather sorry old artificial tree the Silver Lurch, on account of its colour and list. Artificial trees have improved enormously since then but most gardeners do prefer the real thing. There’s something magical about bringing a bit of the outside indoors at this time of year. Unfortunately trees were not meant to live in centrally-heated sitting rooms. It puts them under a lot of stress. So which trees survive Christmas best? Well there are several species available to the British public. The main choices are between pines, spruces and firs. The traditional Christmas tree is Picea Abies, the Norway Spruce. Most popular they may be but they are actually least suited to the conditions inside the average home. Spruces are much more prone to shed needles than firs or pines. Pinus Sylvestris and Pinus Contorta are respectively better known as the Scots Pine and the Lodgepole Pine. Their longer needles hold well but do make hanging decorations a bit tricky for small fingers, which is worth noting if your children like to help. If that’s not an issue the widely spaced branches show off larger baubles very well. The Corsican Pine (pinus Nigra Laricio) is not as common but has similar properties. Firs are the best choice for a British Christmas. If you want the best, and you can find one, plump for Abies Noblilis, the Noble Fir. In its perfect form it’s hard to beat: uniform in shape with more open

branches on the top, its flat, short needles have amazing retention properties. It’s trickier to grow well than most other trees so expect to pay a bit of a premium. The Nordman Fir (Abies Nordmanniana) runs the Noble Fir a close second. It is easily available now as many tree growers invested heavily in the species. They are generally cheaper than the Noble Fir so a good choice if cost is an issue. The Fraser Fir and the lemon-scented Douglas Fir are also worth seeking out. Once you have your tree, make a fresh cut across its trunk and give it a good drink of tepid water before bringing it inside. Secure it properly in a specially made base which is the right size for your tree! A toppled six foot tree, a couple of gallons of water and a hundred or so baubles make a seriously large For true eco-friendliness mess...I know buy British-grown trees. this to be true Most councils offer a Christmas because several tree shredding service. The Christmases shreddings are then composted. ago I was the person clearing Artificial trees are generally non-biodegradable. it all up at two in the morning... don’t make my Christmas tree farms act as a carbon sink, fixing mistake! Merry environmental carbon dioxide Christmas!

were arrested by Police for Burglary offences and failing to stop for police whilst riding an off road quad bike. The 2 males were initially sighted in the Torworth area where the Quad bike then travelled to the Ranskill, Mattersey and then Harworth where the vehicle failed to stop for police. A police helicopter was also involved in the incident which assisted in locating the quad bike and also recording its movements which

Over the past 4 months Nottinghamshire Police, have seized 7 off road bikes and 5 quad bikes that were being used in the Harworth and Bircotes area, and also nearby villages in the East Bassetlaw area. Some of these bikes seized have been examined and confirmed stolen property where enquiries are ongoing. Some of these vehicles will be destroyed as the riders had no insurance and the bikes were not road legal. A juvenile is being prosecuted for fail to stop for police, No insurance and driving without a driving licence after being identified riding a quad bike in the area, where the Juvenile is due in court in November 2015. There have also been several TORS (traffic Offence Report) tickets issued to persons identified riding off road bikes/ quad bikes in the area. Once again we are urging anyone who has any information as to where the quads are being stored and/or who is riding them to report this either directly to us on the non-emergency 101 telephone number. Or if you prefer to report this anonymously you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Speed Detection Operations The Neighbourhood Policing Team will be continuing to work with pupils and staff from the local schools on active speed detection in the area, where the team are arranging some more active speed detection dates with schools from November 2015. The project is aimed at educating motorists however if circumstances meet the criteria prosecutions will also take place. The project has already shown benefit to the area, between January and October 2015 approximately 2,000 vehicles have been monitored with around 14 warnings issued for motorists exceeding the speed limit. This equates to around 0.7% of vehicles monitored were shown speeding in the area.

T

community Fatal Four Nottinghamshire Police have recently been carrying out fatal 4 and speed enforcement under operation Drosometer in the East Bassetlaw area including Harworth and Bircotes. As a result several motorists were issued with TORS (Traffic offence reports) for various offences including speeding, failing to wear seatbelt, using mobile phone whilst driving and also drink driving. The operation also aimed to educate motorists where if they were issued with a TOR they also had the option if they met the criteria, of attending a speed awareness/education course which they then had to pay for the course instaed of receiving 3 points on their licence.

Darker Nights As the nights start to draw in more also consider leaving a light on indoors or putting your lights on a timer if you are going to be away from your property for the evening/overnight.

Once again we strongly urge people to ensure that all lawnmowers and other garden equipment are stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Please also ensure that a good heavy duty lock and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen.

Christmas Greetings

from feedback received from the community by the priority survey forms regarding issues of greatest concern and issues the public wanted the safer Neighborhood Team to tackle. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - DECEMBER 2015 HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN AREA: Referendum on the adoption of the Harworth and Bircotes Neighbourhood Plan on 3rd December. You are asked to vote on the adoption of Harworth and Bircotes Neighbourhood Plan on Thursday, 3rd December. The question that will be asked in the Referendum is: “Do you want Bassetlaw District Council to use the Neighbourhood Plan for Harworth and Bircotes to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?” WHY? Because your vote is the final stage in the required legal process of getting a Neighbourhood Plan in place for Harworth and Bircotes, following the approval given in October at an Extraordinary Bassetlaw District Council meeting in October- this approval was required before a referendum could be held. This is only the second Neighbourhood Plan to be completed in Bassetlaw, a lot of thought and work has gone into it, and it is probably the most comprehensive that will be produced; many smaller communities are now working on their own Plans. You will have received your voting papers by now, I do hope those using Postal Votes have completed and returned them. Remember, your opinion, your vote, really matters the future of Harworth and Bircotes lies with you – please do make your vote count. All the usual polling stations will be open and manned from 7am to 10pm. The Free Community Bus will be in operation, as it is every Thursday, and could be used by those whose polling station is the Town Hall: anyone can use it, just book it a few days earlier by ringing 07444 538430. You can view a list of specified documents, which are: • Harworth and Bircotes 32

Neighbourhood Plan • Report of the independent examiner • Summary of the representations made by the independent examiner • Statement by the local planning authority that the draft plan meets the basic conditions and complies with relevant legislation • An information statement from the Head of Regeneration at Bassetlaw District Council • Statement that sets out general information about town and country planning including neighbourhood planning and the referendum. These documents can be viewed on-line:www.gov.uk/ HarworthandBircotesnp. Paper copies are available from B.D.C. – 01909533533, or from Wendy Davies, Town Clerk – 01302 759037 Update: Memorial Garden Dedication Ceremony, Sunday 13th December • The Bishop of Southwell will begin the Dedication Ceremony at 3 pm. • Posters and leaflets have been distributed to shops and firms on local industrial sites, and displayed in local notice boards. • Invitations have gone out to people associated with but not living in this community – e.g. many of you will remember ‘Mick the Vic’, now retired. • Local newspapers have been made aware of the event

• Some fold-up chairs will be available for those who have mobility problems • Independent wreaths are welcome • The Tenants and Residents Association have organised refreshments in the Town Hall following the ceremony AND Harworth Brass Band will start their concert in the evening at 6pm in the Town Hall. I am told there will be a mix of traditional ‘colliery songs’ and Christmas music. Tickets are available from the Town Hall and also the Tenants and Residents Association. Tickets cost £2…. BUT you will be reimbursed when you arrive at the concert, so in effect they will cost you nothing because Council is funding the Band on this very special occasion… however, music lovers will be expected to pay for their own drinks! Some of you will have noticed men working on the site, preparing it for the final design and landscaping. Q. What influenced the final design? A. Bassetlaw Planning Department, tree conservation orders, and underground cables and pipes! Working within these restraints, I can tell you that the positioning of the Headstone and later the other features took some thinking about, and entailed much discussion. Special thanks have to go to Dave Lewis for his input, and his patience. Funding: Council has been asked to give details of the following press release:- ‘The people of Harworh and Bircotes, an exmining community

housing, employment, commercial, mixed use and traveller sites over the next 15 years. Landowners have until 9th January 2016 to make any submissions. However, not all are guaranteed to be included in the final ‘Local Plan’, and normal planning application procedures will apply. The public will be included at every stage of the Local Plan development, beginning with a public consultation in spring 2016. Due to a change in the Government’s national planning policy, the Council’s current Local Plan, which sets out the priorities for the area when it comes to housing, employment land and other developments, needs to be updated. The intention is to create a 15-year strategy for the District as a whole, with land identified that can be developed to suit the needs of Bassetlaw well into the future. Landowners are now being encouraged to put forward sites suitable for five or more residential dwellings or land in excess of 0.25ha for commercial developments. Potential sites for retail and other development opportunities are also being welcomed. Landowners wishing to put forward a site to be considered for development should fill in the online form at www.bassetlaw.gov. uk/callforsites by Friday 9th January 2016 Litter and Dog Bins: Did you know it is now acceptable to put dog bags in an ordinary litter bin? community anyone who may have had a word with these youngsters – thank you. Quad Bikes. Some quad bikes are driven responsibly and are on the road legally, others are not – like the idiot who drove his quad into the new cemetery the other night…. perhaps he realised he was on consecrated ground- he didn’t stay long. Council is taking steps to avoid this recurring. Attempted Break-in. Who on the evening of Remembrance Sunday crossed the colliery land at the rear of the Town Hall and attempted to break into our garage? Several roof tiles were removed, the alarm was activated and the Police quickly arrived, though the little charmers had quickly legged it. As for the thief who left behind his crowbar, please collect it from the Town Hall …we’ll be waiting! I DON’T BELIEVE IT! I spotted a board next to the bus shelter opposite the Library announcing ‘work will start 16th Nov. and will last for 5 weeks’. What? - 5 weeks to replace the old tarmac? This is public realm improvement work by Notts. County, right next to the Miners Memorial Garden which the Bishop of Southwell is dedicating 13th December. Talk about bad timing –perhaps I should be saying a few prayers myself that the work will be complete before the 13th!

TO MAKE YOU SMILE Needing routine blood tests last month, I decided to take my laboratory form to Bassetlaw Hospital at 8am, thus avoiding full car parks and clinic queues, and giving me plenty of time before a 9am meeting in Worksop Town Hall. It’s a long walk from the hospital main entrance to haematology, and when finally in the clinic I noticed some patients arriving via a different corridor which, they told me, was a shorter distance back to the car park. Blood taken, I set off along this new route, looking for exit signs. It wasn’t until I found myself in the Mental Health Department and a kind nurse re-directed me, that I eventually reached the car park, though nowhere near my car or a ticket pay machine. So much for short cuts- next time I’ll take my sat. nav. with me! greater good…….
