With Mother’s Day approaching I looked for a Mum themed quotation this month! Part of the job of being a Mum is to encourage our children to reach for the stars, to support them in all their endeavours whether that be their first steps, riding a bike, taking up a new hobby, or any of the other new experiences and milestones along the way to adulthood and beyond. It doesn’t get any easier I am discovering, as the concerns we have when they are little, develop into new worries as the reach the next stage in their development. My youngest becomes a teenager on Mother’s Day this year and we become a three teen household! Such fun!

2008 (BAWTRY) SQUADRON 2008 Bawtry Air Cadets are a proud and distinguished Squadron with so much history within the town of Bawtry. This year we celebrate 60 years of being established in Bawtry but our history can place us in nearby Harworth & Bircotes the same year the Air Cadets was formed. Bawtry Squadron was later formed in 1956 and stationed at Bawtry Hall which if you know your history was the location of No1 Bomber command during the WWII and the Lancaster Bomber, also in later years for the Cold War and also the Falklands War with the Vulcan. So as you see a very privileged Military history.

SO NOW AS PART OF OUR 60TH ANNIVERSARY WE ARE LOOKING FOR EX-CADETS OR EX-OFFICERS AND CI’S TO GET IN CONTACT AS WE HOPE TO HAVE A CELEBRATION IN SEPTEMBER Please contact the Squadron/Facebook or CI Victoria Aldridge (victoria_aldridge@hotmail.com) As for our Cadets they too have been celebrated with a wonderful Dining In Night at the Crown Hotel in Bawtry. Awards were given to some of our hard working Cadets and our staff were recognised for their achievements behind the scenes. After the wonderful meal, the Cadets let off some steam by hitting the dance floor till past midnight. A good time was had by all and a Thank You to the Crown Hotel for putting on a great night. On Sunday 7th of February the centre of Doncaster came to a stand still as over a thousand Air Cadets, Officers and staff paraded through the streets from Cast to Mansion House and on to St George’s Minster to celebrate 75 Years of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets. The Air Cadets also repeated their Promise of allegiance together, which in total was around 800 serving Air Cadets. A very Impressive and an emotional moment for all involved. T

Miranda Sykes & Rex Preston – Firbeck Village Hall I don’t know about you, Dear Reader, but when winter descends, I feel like hibernating, it’s too much effort to go out, and it’s just so easy to collapse onto the sofa and do the knitting, … but Spring is on its way and eventually there comes a time when you need to wake up and greet the world, to take part and to enjoy yourself. There is so much going on out there, why miss out on it? I’d bought tickets for King Charles III which was touring to the Lyceum the first week of Feb. Even though the tickets were a fortune, the evening was so appalling weather –wise that I suggested that we forgot it…but we didn’t, we got out the galoshes and sou’westers and headed out, and the play was terrific. I knew it had won a slew of awards when in London, but didn’t know what to expect. It was written in Shakespearian Old English, so this piece of work, set in the near future appeared like a history –play, and it referenced so much – snatches from Richard II, Henry V, Macbeth (the set could have come straight from that one) and even Jarvis Cocker. If you missed that, you missed a treat. So what is there his month? Bawtry Garden Club Our February meeting was well attended and we were treated to an excellent talk and presentation, all about roses. Stuart showed us numerous photographs of old fashioned roses from his own garden, as well as more recent David Austin roses. He spoke of the origin of the roses, the oldest one dating back to the 1400s, with many from the 1800s. It was definitely a history lesson too! Our meeting on 1 March, is a talk on Orchids by Mr Creek. Our April meeting will be a lesson on ‘Pruning’. An important diary date: Saturday 10 September. Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake Thank you to everyone who has been in touch with me over the last month with concerns, questions and suggestions for improvements for the area. As always I start with a few updates. Making our ward safer The 20mph safety zone for Mayflower School is taking longer than I had hoped; South Avenue is now complete and the 30mph sign on Thorne Road has been moved further along the road, but at the time of writing we are still waiting for the flashing 20mph signs. Also, I am still asking about having a crossing somewhere on Station Road and looking at different ways for this to be funded. Residents have also spoken with me about the traffic lights on Gainsborough Road and how many near misses are happening for a number of reasons. I have reported this to Highways and I am waiting for a signals engineer to meet me on site to see what can be done. In a previous update I mentioned the PACT meetings and changes to them. The new meetings will be starting in April and I will include more information about these next month. Neighbourhood Planning It was wonderful to meet so many residents at the Neighbourhood Planning event held on 11 February at The Crown. The exhibition was very comprehensive, all the work of the Planning Group, made up of residents and business owners and the results will be analysed and included in the next stage of the process. Licensing and Planning Applications How DMBC grants licenses and deals with planning applications has been the subject of local and regional news in the last week. Residents have asked me how they can find out what is being applied for and how they can object to applications if they feel that it would impact negatively on them. Information about both can be found on DMBCs website along with how to object. Applications are discussed at both Town and

Parish Councils and the public are welcome to attend these and can raise their concerns in the 15 minute session at the start of each meeting at 7pm. Please do contact me if you require further information. Tour de Yorkshire – 30 April from 12pm To ensure we really celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire coming through Bawtry and Austerfield, I organised a meeting for residents, community groups, Town and Parish Councils and businesses so that we could work together to plan a great afternoon for both residents and visitors. Thanks to The Crown for providing a room for us to meet. Further details will be included in next month’s edition and is included on Bawtry Town Council’s page. If you want to be involved, please visit the Bawtry Residents Group Facebook page. Clean for the Queen 6 March A resident who attended my surgery suggested we need a clean-up of our town and was happy to be involved, so I am organising a Clean for the Queen event (a national initiative to tidy up our towns and cities). More details will be posted around the town so if you want to get involved, please do come along – all ages welcome and stay as long as you can. My surgeries and Contact Details Bawtry Library Coffee Morning - 2nd Friday of every month from 10am - 12. Austerfield - Austerfield Parish Council meeting on 3rd Monday of every month. Also I will be popping into the lunch club at Austerfield so I can meet you there. Please don’t wait for my surgeries, please call me on 710251 or 07976896563 Follow me on Twitter - CllrRachaelB Unfortunately I don’t have the space to include everything I am doing, so please do get in touch if you want more information about anything I have included, or to suggest something I haven’t. Hello from all at Mayflower Sanctuary. Well so far we have escaped the horrid weather that has plagued some of the country which is such a relief for all of our dogs, cats and kennel staff. We are looking for a couple of volunteer home checkers. Petrol will be paid and training will be given. We need to make sure our dogs are twinned with the correct people, and homes that are safe, so home checkers are an important part of what we do. Interested ? Call the telephone number at the bottom of the page. Ahead of Valentine’s day we sold red hearts for £1 to tie to the doors of our residents kennels. The Sanctuary looked fantastic with a sea of red hearts with some lovely Valentine messages written on them. A big thank you to everyone that has purchased them. Sainsburies in Bawtry are raffling a hamper for us for Valentine’s day too so a big thank you to them for thinking of us. They are very supportive so thank you to them and everyone that bought tickets. Little Tim I told you all about in the last Magazine is having his heart operation on the 16th Feb, so when you are reading this he will hopefully be well on the road to recovery and a long life. People have been so generous and we have managed to achieve nearly all of the money for his operation through donations. We can’t thank everyone enough. I will keep everyone informed of his progress. We have sent around 6 of our dogs with issues and no manners to School or Boot Camp as we like to call it, they are there for 6 weeks and their ongoing training is going very well. They will be much happier dogs when they return and they will be ready to be rehomed with loving families.

It’s just general maintenance we are in need of. We recently needed a door fixing on one of our stores it had come loose in the wind a lovely person Paul Redshaw came to our rescue. Thank you so much for giving a few hours at the weekend to help us. Could you offer him the loving home that he needs and deserves? Extremely loving and vocal he is such a treasure to have around.

Bawtry Residents Group News The BRG held its first meeting of the New Year at the end of January and I am pleased to report that we have now four new members on board, Edwin Marrison (Vice Chair), Margaret Byrne (Group Secretary), Valerie Williams (Press Secretary) and George Scott (Committee member). Therefore, the BRG committee membership as at 28th January 2016 is as follows: Officers: Chair – Doug Cartwright, Vice Chair – Edwin Marrison, Secretary – Margaret Byrne, Treasurer – Gilbert Budgen Committee Member: Joan Beck, Rachael Blake, Becky Brightmore, Patrick Carroll, John Linsley, David Kirkham, George Scott, Valerie Williams (Press Secretary). Among the many items discussed was an up-date from Councillor John Linsley on the issues being discussed and progressed by Bawtry Town Council. The meeting was also given an up-date on what progress had been made to date in the development of a Neighbourhood Plan and details were given of the forthcoming consultation event and exhibition being held at the Crown Hotel on the 11th February (14:00 – 21:00). There was also discussion on the news that Bawtry Motor Auctions (BMA) was said be moving to another site probably before the end of June and what might happen to the site once BMA had left Bawtry. On a similar note, quite a lively discussion took place about the alleged sale of the old bottling plant on Tickhill Road and it being converted into a car park for up to 150 cars. A number of residents expressed concern about the current parking arrangements on Tickhill Road and felt that alterations would need to be made to the existing arrangements before the council should allow a new car park to open. Additionally, the group requested Councillor Rachel Blake take this up with the Highways Dept at DMBC. It was also agreed that the current Issues list & action plan now needs reviewing and everyone was asked to let the Chair know of issues that they felt should be included. The current list/ action plan includes the following: 20

Bawtry Today

• Traffic & Parking • Highways and General Condition of the Town • Changing nature of the Town, day time/night time economies • Lack of vision for the Town • Use of Market Hill • Bus Services • Aircraft noise & activity • Fracking proposals Finally, the Chair on behalf of the BRG expressed his thanks to both John Linsley and David Kirkham the former Chair and Vice Chair respectively for all the hard work they had put in over the past twelve months in establishing and promoting the BRG. Meetings will continue on a bi-monthly basis on the last Thursday of the month starting at 7:30pm in The Crown Hotel. The next meeting being on Thursday 31 March 2016. If you care about your town then please come along to the meetings. Regards

TEAM WORK PAYS DIVIDENDS! The highlight of this month for our retailers, businesses and visitors alike is our fourth ‘Bawtry Fashion Week’ which takes place between 10th and 17th March. Once again the week is dedicated to the pursuit of fashion and, during the week, a variety of businesses will be hosting special events to which you are all invited. Those that have already made their announcements include Yasmine of Bawtry who is hosting a Joseph Ribkoff day including in store fashion shows, Robinsons of Bawtry hosting a Wolford day with the opportunity for customers to have a one to one appointment with a Wolford expert with support from others including Infinity Boutique, Bawtry Shoe Company and Cherish Dress Agency amongst others. One thing is for certain – it’s going to be another week long spectacle that will really put Bawtry on the map!

And, with the countdown firmly on for when the iconic Tour De Yorkshire sweeps through the town on Saturday 30th April, we are working hard to make sure no one misses us – no matter how fast they are pedalling! We’ll be delighted to announce more details in our next edition. Don’t forget that Yorkshire Caravans is hosting its annual Yorkshire Caravan Show from 12th – 20th March with Trax FM and Traxie bear joining in the fun on 12th and 19th March. Finally, our warmest congratulations go to Ruth and the Limited 2 Art team who are on the move to the old Bawtry Flowers and Plants building, our original town hall built in 1890. It will be great to see one of our most historic buildings occupied once again. Don’t forget that you can find out lots of information from our website www.visitbawtry. com, follow us on Twitter @visitbawtry and like us on Facebook /bawtryretailassociation T

Speaking of putting our town on the map, one of our objectives for this year is to ensure Bawtry is as accessible as possible for visitors, including those to whom the town is new. With this in mind we hope to create a visitors map and we are working closely with our town council and Residents Group so that together we can achieve even more. Another team effort paid dividends when we supported the British Heart Foundations “Wear it, Beat it’ Campaign in February. Ten red hanging baskets donated by Hurst Lane Nurseries were kindly purchased by Dower House and retailers including Bawtry Eye Academy, Cherry Blossom Cakes, China Rose, Bawtry Bar & Brasserie, Bawtry Gym, Yorkshire Caravans, Bawtry Natural Health, The Gray Rooms, Crown Hotel, Co-Op, Robinsons, Cycle Works, Six IT Services, The Tasting Note, Feast & Cheese Cave Deli all helped to make the day special and raise hundreds of pounds. 24

BAWTRY WI At our first meeting of the year in January, we welcomed our speaker Steve Keegan from the Doncaster Domestic Abuse team. He gave a very interesting and informative talk on his work with victims of domestic abuse and spoke movingly about the problems they encounter. As a group, Bawtry WI continues to be involved in supporting Changing Lives, a charity which supports victims of domestic violence in Doncaster. In February, we tried out a new activity – Chair yoga led by Alicia Kaill from Bawtry Gym. We have an interesting and varied programme planned for the rest of the year. This month’s meeting takes place on Wednesday 16th March when we will be hearing about the History of the Grand Theatre. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of every month in the New Hall, Bawtry at 7.15pm (for 7.30pm start). Visitors and new members are assured of a warm welcome, so come along and give it a try. For more information, please contact our Secretary, Sandra Crawford on 01302 711420. T

HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”

Does this sound familiar? “ We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children” These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home.

Care Costs If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills. Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

Also available: APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.

Do you qualify?

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Lovely Lilies (and a spot of hard-pruning) The first day of spring this year is officially March 20th . Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners? Pruning features large! Hard-prune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past.

There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8inch / 20cm pot and five fit into a ten inch / 25cm pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over.

Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade.

Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost.

If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems.

Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot.

Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing. Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore. Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead. I have one word for you...Lilies. I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary! 36

Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony.

Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting. There are a plethora of colours and scents available, so there is a lily for everyone. Try them. I guarantee you’ll be as in love with lilies as I am.

Remember my Chains Dear Friends, On Tuesday February 9th, 2016 the Prime Minister announced that six ‘reform prisons’ would be created in England and Wales “to tackle the high levels of violence and reoffending”. However, there was some response from charities regarding how effective these measures are if “prisoners were crammed into filthy institutions with no staff”. This issue reminds me of the Apostle Paul, who wrote a few letters to churches in Asia whilst in prison in Rome. One of the churches was in Colossae. In his conclusion to the letter to the Colossians, he stated, “I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you” (Colossians 4: 18). I wonder if Paul may have dictated to someone to write this letter on his behalf. If so, I wonder if the conditions in which he found himself made it impossible to write since he was literate. Being in chains might have limited his ability to write. Paul might therefore be reminding his readers to help him become free from those chains so that he could live a ‘normal’ life like anyone else. Many people may not be in prison cells but find themselves chained up physically, emotionally and spiritually to debts, addictions, relationships, etc. Most of them want to live ‘normal lives’ but can only do so if we make a move to help them. Secondly, Paul had earlier in the chapter asked his readers to pray for him to proclaim the gospel. It may be that Paul was not imprisoned as a criminal but because of the work he did as a preacher. This reminds us that every prisoner needs our prayer and help, be it a criminal or not. We do not have to judge them for who they are or are not. I also wonder if Paul may not have been warning his readers of the risk of being Christians. It was a risky business to be a preacher in those days 40

so it could be that he was warning his readers to be ready to face the consequences of following Jesus. Talk of risks reminds me of Dan Walker who will replace Bill Turnbull on BBC breakfast show. This young man has his faith being tested because he has come out to declare what he can do and cannot do on a Sunday. He had to declare that his faith would not affect what he does as a journalist. Many of us face similar situations in our daily routines and are reminded that the world has not changed since biblical times. I wonder if I can remind you that we are in Lent, a time to prepare for Easter day. The website RE:QUEST, explains, “Christians spend the 40 days of Lent preparing for Easter Day. They set aside time to think about whether they are living in a way that makes God happy. They will ask for God’s forgiveness for the times they mess up, and for his help to live in the way that he wishes. Christians specially remember all that Jesus did for each of them when he died on the cross on the first Good Friday. They also remember how he overcame sin and death by rising from death on the first Easter Sunday”. One of the ways to live to make God happy is to consider those who are in prison cells as well as those chained emotionally or spiritually by their actions and relationships. I wonder if you may ask God to lead you to act in a way that will help such a person become free and lead a ‘normal life’. It may involve taking risks as the Apostle Paul and Dan Walker did but do not worry, God will lead you in all that you do by his Spirit. Grace be with you. Yours sincerely,

Misson & Springs WI A land of contrasts, of great wealth and great poverty, a land of noise, chaos and mayhem, but also a country of amazing sights, of beautiful scenery and breath-taking architecture - this was the India to which Margaret Byrne introduced us in our first meeting of 2016. She accompanied us on a journey which had taken her six weeks, and her personal account brought to life the variety, the vitality and colour of this fascinating country much of whose recent history is so inextricably linked with our own. It was a journey where size and huge numbers often dominated - the largest silver object in the world in Jaipur, a water urn weighing 354 kg, a railway station with 14 million passengers a day - and where magnificent temples, mosques and churches reflect the spirit of different faiths. Although an hour was not really long enough to do her subject justice, Margaret brought to life the richness and energy of India with her own interpretation of this unique country. On 24th February, we are looking forward to a return visit from Jacqui Housely to continue our attempts at decorating cupcakes. Fortunately our January diets will be a thing of the past by then As always, our activities will be accompanied by an endless supply of refreshments, including homemade cake. We always have time for a chat and would love you to join us. We meet on the last Wednesday of every month at 7.30 pm at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson; don’t hesitate to turn up, or phone our secretary, Lynda Redfern on 07796975578 for any further information. Micro chipping law begins April 6th Dog owners who have not micro chipped their pet face a fine of up to £500 when a new law comes into force this Spring. The aim is to reduce the 100,000 dogs lost or abandoned each year in England. Apart from untold suffering to the animals, it costs charities and taxpayers nearly £60 million in rescue and re-homing costs. To help pet owners meet the April 6th deadline, the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre at Bawtry is offering while-you-wait micro chipping with no appointment needed. The cost of the chip and registering online is only £12. Micro chipping vastly increases the chances of reuniting lost pets with their owners. Chipping is simple and safe and the RSPCA offer applies to dogs, cats and rabbits. When you visit the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre on the Great North Road, Bawtry, DN10 6DE, you can also take advantage of the charity’s new, bigger Pet Store where all proceeds go towards caring for rescued animals.

Admission £10 at the door with the exception of our subscription members.

It costs an average of £10 a day to care for each animal at the Centre and the charity receives no Government or lottery funding. Help us by texting SYAC14 £5 to 70070, donate online at www.rspcadrb.org.uk, or why not volunteer some of your time.

Accompanied children (under 16) and students (16-19) are admitted free of charge. T

Bawtry Town Council - MARCH 2016 MSG We have again suffered a break-in at the pavilion on the field. The hole in the roof cut by would be thieves has been identified as being through asbestos by an environmental company, following an inspection and the resulting report. We have received a quote for the removal of the asbestos which has now been carried out. The roof also has been repaired and made safe. We apologise for the loss of the use of the pavilion but it was a health hazard but is now safe. We are now considering security fencing for the field and replacing the lock on the gate.

SPEED LIMITS

PARKING A resident pointed out that some vehicles were parked all day during the week in the small laybys outside the Turnpike and Womack’s shop without displaying the required blue badges. It was pointed out that this was the responsibility of DMBC but reported to them by BTC. It was agreed to advise DMBC of this reoccurring problem. The issue of post office vehicles parking on double yellow lines on Station Road was brought to the attention of DMBC. They advised that post office vehicles were exempt from the Authority’s traffic orders even though they have been sold as a private company. As such until such time as the DoT advises councils of their parking exemption being revoked, DMBC cannot issue parking penalties. 44

Austerfield Parish Council News: March 2016.

Welcome to the first edition of the Austerfield Parish Council newsletter for 2016. COUNCILLOR UPDATES The Parish Council currently have a vacancy for a Councillor due to Richard Martin resigning. The Council would like to thank Richard for the time that he was a Councillor. The vacancy for Councillor can be filled via the co-option process; if you are interested in becoming a Councillor then please contact the Clerk.

PARISH COUNCIL WEBSITE Please remember to check the Parish Council website; the address is www.austerfieldpc. co.uk. The website is updated regularly and contains information about the meetings; planning applications and events. If you would like anything adding to the website then please contact the Clerk.

CAR PARKING ISSUES The Parish Council have received several complaints regarding vehicles parking on the pavements. Currently as the law stands, it is not illegal to park on pavements in areas that do not have pavement parking restriction signs erected by the local council. However cars parking on pavements certainly can be hazardous for many pedestrians. In particular, the blind, disabled and individuals with push chairs can struggle to get past an inappropriately parked vehicle. It can also lead pedestrians having to walk into the road to navigate their way around the obstruction. The Parish Council would like to request that residents take time to be considerate towards other residents and pedestrians.

VILLAGE EVENTS The Christmas light switch on was very successful and was well attended; the Parish Council would like to thank all the staff at Bawtry Carbon International for their help in organising the event and providing the tree. The Councillors would also like to thank the residents for lighting up their gardens and house which made the village look very festive. The pensioners Christmas lunch took place in December at The Ship Inn at Newington; once again the meal was enjoyed by all and was followed by a few games of bingo. The Council would like to thank the staff at The Ship Inn for hosting an enjoyable afternoon. If you are a pensioner and have not been invited to this event then please contact the Clerk. The Tour De Yorkshire is coming to Austerfield and the Parish Council would like to celebrate this event. The plans for the day are still in discussion but further news will be on the website and distributed through the village closer to the date. The Parish Council will be holding a Village on Show on Sunday the 25th September; the show will be similar to last year’s event but hopefully on a larger scale. There will be a scarecrow festival for all residents to get involved in so please keep this date free and start planning your scarecrow. Further details regarding the show will be distributed closer to the date.

WARD COUNCILLOR SURGERIES Councillor Blake attends all of the Parish Council meetings which are held on the 3rd Monday of each month and also attends the luncheon cub at Austerfield Study Centre. If you have any issues then please feel free to attend these events and discuss them with the Council.

Pastor’s Page At Tate Modern at the moment is an installation called Empty Lot by Abraham Cruzvillegas, which he describes as a statement of hope. It is a series of triangular planters filled with soil from several parks around London. When my wife and I saw it in February we wondered if it had been abandoned or not finished yet as some planters were just dusty soil and others had a few weeds sticking out, but we did notice that one planter had two bulbs growing nicely amongst the weeds.

completely and only wish I could go and look at it once a month to see what is growing, what is thriving, what surprises have emerged (like the two bulbs we saw), which soils have refused to grow anything, etc.

Of course; this is Modern Art and the planters hadn’t been neglected or unfinished at all; the whole point was to fill the planters with soil, then keep them watered and well-lit and see what happens. The soils from around London vary in acidity, water-retention, age and in which seeds they hold, so by the end of the six months run (early May) there should be a range of growth and plants. The artist has said that if something grows then that would make him happy but if nothing grows then that too would make him happy as there will always be something happening in the soil, whether you can see it or not.

Jesus said that to know God then we need to lose our ideas of sophistication or maturity and to become like children in some ways. We need to recapture a simple faith that is able to trust God no matter what may or may not happen, to be determined to enjoy what comes. The Bible also says that the whole of creation is waiting, straining for God’s glory to be fully revealed; again I see a patient, hope-filled expectation of surprise and wonder that Abraham Cruzvillegas understands so clearly and that I so often lose sight of.

The hope which Abraham Cruzvillegas spoke off when the installation was opened is based on what wasn’t known, it was a determination to be pleased no matter what occurred (or didn’t occur) and a child-like, naïve anticipation of being surprised. When I learnt what Empty Lot was about I understood it 58

We live in a cultural atmosphere that measures success all too often in terms of growth (be that National GDP, share prices, salary increases, managing to pass the next level of exam, etc); and very rarely in terms of contentment or of being happy with simplicity, etc.

Anyway, my wife tells me the garden is in desperate need of weeding, I’d better go and sort it. Though, thinking about it I might just wait and see what comes up.

Tickhill and District Lions The History Lions Clubs began in 1917 as the dream of a Chicago businessman who believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons to include the betterment of their communities and the world at large. This belief became a driving principle and it was decided that no Lions Club should exist for the financial benefit of its members. Lions Clubs became ‘International’ with the first Canadian Club in 1920. During the Second World War members of Canadian Lions Clubs, visiting London as servicemen, were appalled by the way the children of the blitz had to live and decided they wanted to help. Queen Elizabeth was so impressed by their actions that after the war she sent Lord Leconfield to Canada to thank the Lions and shortly after his return the first Lions Clubs started to spread throughout the UK. There are now over 900 Clubs in the UK and Ireland, over 46,000 around the world in 208 countries and more than 1.3 million Lions, all dedicated to making a difference Lions Clubs International is the largest service organisation in the world and also one of the most effective. Each one of its members pays their own dues which collectively cover all of our insurance and administration costs. This means that all of the money raised by our Club can be distributed in full without any deductions. Message in a bottle. The emergency services are all aware of the Lions ‘Message in a Bottle’ scheme. The small plastic bottles contain basic personal and

medical records and are kept where they can be easily found in an emergency - in the fridge! The bottles are available free of charge. Lions Clubs have distributed over 5 million bottles to people with conditions such as diabetes, allergies, disabilities and life threatening illnesses - however, the scheme is extremely beneficial for all no matter how serious or minor their illness. Contact Lions or enquirer at your local surgery. Little Heroes Cancer Trust - Firewalk On Friday 5th February President Steve Radford joined Michelle, the landlady of The Oak, and ten others walking over burning coals to raise funds for the Little Heroes Cancer Trust. At the time of writing the donations were in excess of £1,500 - an excellent result.
