I had such plans to be organised well ahead for Christmas this year so that I didn’t find myself rushing around, missing things, working late and wrapping on Christmas Eve! Unfortunately, as I write this with just 10 days left to go and still with not a card written, 5 magazines to finish, shopping still to do and lots still to organise, it looks like I will be working and preparing right up to Christmas again! Fingers crossed that by the time you read this I will be enjoying a few days of relaxation.

OU TS

I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends.

Are You Paying Care Home Fees? If you have assets exceeding ÂŁ23,250 the cost of care will need to be met by yourself. For some, this means selling the family home. However, many people who are in this position are not aware that funding may be available for them.

Will the NHS pay for my care? If the need for care primarily is a health need, YES In these circumstances the NHS are obligated to meet the care costs of the individual in full. This funding is known as continuing healthcare, and is sometimes abbreviated to CHC funding.

How can I receive this funding? It is difficult to secure continuing healthcare. Providing this funding to individuals is incredibly expensive for the NHS, in the same way it is incredibly expensive to pay privately. As a result it is regularly the case that the NHS attempt to apply a higher bar to satisfy than is set out in law and in the Department of Health literature pertaining to continuing healthcare. Many people who should be receiving in full to meet the cost of their care are not. It is estimated there are 100,000 in the UK presently paying for care when these costs should be met by continuing healthcare.

What can I do to find out if I am eligible for this funding? If you or your relative is paying for care and you believe there is a health need, then contact an expert member of our team today to discuss your options and find out how we can assist.

For a limited period, Guardian are offering the initial consultation and assessment free of charge. Typically saving up to ÂŁ1000 on solicitors fees.

EVER WANTED TO SCUBA DIVE or SNORKEL? Welcome to Doncaster Sub Aqua Club DSAC are members of the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) which is acknowledged as the world’s most respected recreational training system. A diving qualification with the BSAC is recognized throughout the world and provides access to the wonders of the underwater world.

locations to extend the experience and confirm the trainees ability to dive safely.

Located in the centre of Doncaster we are minutes from the Northern Bus Station and Rail station on Greyfriars Road. Our club house has a training room for theory lessons, an equipment room, compressor room, boat house and of course a club bar.

Learning to scuba dive or snorkel takes you to a world that most people don’t get to see and it’s an experience always remembered. So if you’ve wondered just what it’s like to take up scuba diving or snorkeling then why not come along to the pool and have a TRY DIVE? We have all the equipment you need then you can decide if you want to take either activity further.

As a club we meet every Wednesday evening where we meet to socialize, share diving experiences plan dives and offer training for those wishing to extend their qualifications and experience.

All training with us is undertaken by BSAC accredited Diving Instructors and is structured to enable divers to progress safely through each qualification/grade level to meet their diving aspirations.

Why not give someone a Try Dive/or Try Snorkel as a unique gift just £10 for a one and a half hour lesson Are you a PADI (or other agency) diver and fancy trying UK Scuba diving? It’s easy for PADI qualified (or other agency) divers to dive with the BSAC. If you have a recognized qualification you do not have to do any cross over or further training (unless you want to). It doesn’t matter who you trained with (recreational, commercial or military) if you haven’t dived in the UK before or if you haven’t dived for a few seasons – all are very welcome – please join us - come along to the clubhouse on Greyfriars Road at 8:30pm on a Wednesday evening for a chat. The BSAC motto is (dive with friends) and that is exactly what we do.

Our qualified instructors provide a safe and structured training program at the pace set by the trainee. Initial pool training takes place at Hall Cross School for those learning the basics of scuba diving and/or snorkeling and is combined with theory lessons, an important part of learning to scuba dive. Having completed basic training in the pool, Instructors manage the transition to open water diving using Lakeside and other inland 6

Happy New Year to all and I hope everyone had a happy Christmas. Here at the Sanctuary we made sure that all of our residents had lovely Christmas presents to keep them occupied on Christmas morning. A big thank you to all staff that elected to work over the Christmas break keeping our dogs and cats fed watered and happy. We have been busy over the Christmas period fundraising. We have had 2 Doncaster street collections which were both a great success. We met the most interesting people that told us lovely stories about their dogs and cats. They were as always very generous. So thank you to everyone that volunteered to collect and also to everyone that came along and said hello. It is always a wonderful pleasure to collect in Doncaster Town centre. Yorkshire Caravans in Bawtry invited us to their Christmas event. They were happy for us to do a tombola and we had great fun. Again a big thank you to Yorkshire Caravans and to everyone that came to take part.

Finding a forever home We were really busy at the Sanctuary up to Christmas which was wonderful. Lots of dogs and cats went to their new homes in time for them to enjoy their Christmas lunch. We are at last coming to the end of our new kennel refurb they are looking brilliant and will make such a difference to our Sanctuary. We would like to thank Adoption for Pets who have made this possible, together with Councillor Grainger who contributed to our first refurbishment programme. If anyone has a few hours to spare and enjoy dog walking why not make a New Year’s resolution to keep fit and help us by volunteering to dog walk. Again a Happy New Year and we hope to see you soon.

Name: Peppa Sex: Female Date into care: June 15 Age: 2 Years Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: Some Lived with children: Yes Peppa has had to come into care with her buddy, Muffin, because the new baby in the family was allergic to them. She is a loving little cat but can be a little shy with strangers. All she needs is time to get to know you and you will see the cuddle-cat hiding beneath that tough exterior. She is best buddies with Muffin so a home together would be perfect but not essential if the right home comes along separately. Please don’t pass her by, ask to meet her and you will see the sweetheart within.

Name: Whisky Sex: Female Date into care: Feb 15 Age on arrival: 18 Months Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: Yes Lived with children: Yes When Whisky’s owner had to move she was unable to take her babies with her so contacted Mayflower for help. It was a sad day when she left Whisky and her buddy, Guinness, behind. Whisky is the more confident of the pair and is soon purring away and asking for cuddles. She has previously been a housecat but would possibly like to explore a secure garden. Although a home together would be perfect as they are best buddies, its not essential if the right home comes along separately. Please don’t pass them by.

Our last meeting of the year was on festive lines. Sandra Crawford from Austerfield demonstrated making a Christmas table decoration. Members then had the opportunity to make an arrangement, under the watchful eye of Sandra! Our first meeting of the New Year, on Tuesday. 5 January at 7.00pm, is the AGM. There will also be a quiz, and a 'question & answer' session on gardening issues. Our meetings are held in the Methodist Church Hall in Bawtry, and new members can be assured of a warm welcome. For further information, please contact the secretary, Sylvia, on 01302 719015

In November we had our AGM along with a Pie n Pea supper. New and serving members were elected to the committee. Grateful thanks to those who have stood down or reduced their contribution for everything they have done over the last 3 years. At our December Christmas party we were entertained by a “Close up Magician” but more about this in the February issue. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7.15pm for 7.30pm start in The Bawtry New Hall. We give a warm welcome to past and new members. T 10

Real reasons to go running! We all know there is sound medical evidence that says exercise is good for us. Yet knowing we are keeping heart disease at bay and preventing type II diabetes doesn’t always help us feel motivated in the here and now. So here are some meaningful, real life reasons to run (other forms of exercise are also available!)… • It’s free • If you run, you can eat cake. And enjoy it. And who doesn’t want that?! • You can go when you want and where you want. With busy lives and hectic family schedules, a quick run is easier to squeeze in than you might think

Call on 01302 511755 or email info@blizardphysiotherapy.co.uk Blizard Physiotherapy Limited, Bircotes DN11 8DE

• You can do away with weigh ins, scales and measuring various body parts…you can continually monitor the changes when you go out – the more you run, the less you’ll wobble • It’s a brilliant way to keep warm. You’ll get lovely and hot and can probably save yourself a couple of hours of heating on a running day • Fresh air and really experiencing the seasons is good for the soul (go with me on this one!) • You are setting your children up for lifelong healthy habits. It’s no good just badgering children to switch off the tv, turn off computer games and cut down on screen time. They need to see that exercise is a normal part of everyday life for everyone.

Making up service Full Interior Design Service

• You’ll look better naked... feel better naked… (you can come to your own conclusions about the additional benefits of this) • If it’s possible, run past a graveyard – this serves as a great reminder of what the medical evidence actually boils down to. Exercise, and you’re going to live longer!

wonder not only about what lies ahead but also if they have made the most of their lives. We find ourselves wondering what our legacy is going to be - will we be remembered just for managing to buy a nice house, climbing quite far up the greasy pole, for being quite nice people, etc?

As I write this I am visiting a member of my church who works in Peru (it’s a tough job but I’m always up for a challenge) and I had decided to take the morning to visit a museum. It was only after paying, as I counted the change, that I realised that the receptionist had charged me the pensioner rate. I don’t know which of my reactions was the greater; delight at saving a couple of pounds or horror that she thought I was over 65 (I’m a youthful 52).

The start of a new year is a great time to think seriously about what our lives are about and how we’re going to make the most of whatever days, energy and mental capability we have left. Moses in the Bible was 80 when he did his greatest work, a man called Caleb was 85 when he declared he was as tough and capable as a young warrior and he chose to live in the hard mountains rather than in the genteel valley. Surely these men can challenge us to work as hard as ever, to invest in what really matters and to continue to learn new things? They also prove to us that it is never too late to take God seriously.

In my defence I would say that Peruvians don’t go grey to such an extent as westerners and nor do they lose their hair like we do, there are lots of men older than me with full heads of black hair whereas I am a bit thin on top and also greying at the temples a little. It is only a little. But it seems I am indeed getting older; in filling out forms I seem to be always ticking the second to last age range, my youngest child is the age I was when I started work and I find myself daydreaming about retirement. For many people the realisation that they’re in the final third of their life is a frightening thought and they 22

Personally I could spend more time in museums and art galleries learning about our society, which will help me as I seek to teach the Bible into contemporary culture - at least it’s not going to cost me as much as I thought.

2008(BAWTRY) SQUADRON ATC

Our Cadets have had a fantastic year and this included an award ceremony they attended on Sunday December 6th and the South and West Yorkshire Wing headquarters in Castleford. Along with other Squadrons from the region the cadets received awards for all their efforts to gain their Duke of Edinburgh Awards. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme has helped over 100,000 young people since it was created nearly 60 years ago. The Royal Air Force Air Cadets is proud have the largest group membership. It gives young people a chance to improve their life experiences and the lives of others. There are three levels which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold D of E Award. There are four sections at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold, each involve and aspects of Volunteering, physical activities, learning new skills and talents. As they go on the Cadets have the chance 28

to experience expeditions and residential activities at home and abroad, were they can expand their knowledge and work along side others. Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake Happy New Year! It is going to be a busy year. The opening of the FARRS link road in the spring will cut journey times to Doncaster and for residents travelling onto the M18 and further afield, it will be less than 10 minutes to get from Parrots Corner to the M18. The announcement of the Tour de Yorkshire was great news for us, with Bawtry and Austerfield being the route from which the riders will travel on their way to a finish in Doncaster Town Centre. I was delighted to attend Austerfield’s Christmas event and turn the lights on. This was a first for Austerfield to have a lights switch on and the event organised by the Parish Council, was well supported by residents. Also staying in Austerfield, huge congratulations to the Community Centre who won Social Enterprise of the Year at the CVS awards evening for the 2nd year running. Firstly some updates from last month. Buses Thank you to all those residents who completed their questionnaires and suggested changes to the proposed bus network. I mentioned last time about Austerfield residents and the Parish Council did an excellent job to distribute the questionnaires to residents who requested them. When I attended Bawtry Town Council, suggestions were made there to reinstate the Tickhill – Bawtry bus which I am aware that some residents have included when completing their questionnaires. The consultation closed on 18 December and I will keep you informed about process. Footpaths on Market Hill Details have been provided by DMBC about suitable funding that could be applied for – I will keep you updated on progress. Cumulative Impact Policy This was ratified at DMBC Full Council in November and will be introduced for a 2 year period. There have been some negative coverage of this decision with suggestions that these policies are only introduced where there are considerable anti-social behaviour problems which is not the case. Many towns and cities have these policies in place and it does not prevent new alcohol retailers in an area but makes an applicant prove they will not add to the problem in an area, possibly by amending their proposed business plans. Tour de Yorkshire Doncaster has been chosen to host the Saturday finish (April 30) of the 2016 Tour de Yorkshire, one of the most prized events in the global cycling calendar. The riders will come through Bawtry and then on to Austerfield before heading into the town centre for the finish. We will also be hosting the finish of the inaugural women’s race, featuring the world’s leading female riders. We want to create a 34

Bawtry Today

carnival atmosphere which shows exactly what is great about Doncaster to a worldwide audience and want to get all communities involved. Further details will be discussed in January so I will provide you with an update in the future. Lots of information, including the route through our borough, is available on: http://letour.yorkshire.com/ and www.doncaster.gov.uk/tdy What do you think about waste and recycling in Doncaster? The council currently recycles 40% of all household waste, but this needs to increase to 50% by the year 2020 to meet legal requirements. In addition to thinking about how to increase recycling, questions will also be focused on making recycling easier for residents and more cost effective. In order to maximise the efficiency of recycling, some materials like paper and glass should be collected separately. One proposal is to have containers, known as ‘caddies’, to sit inside a wheeled bin for recycling instead of the current green box system, enabling the separate collection of key materials. This would be in addition to the black bin, and residents will be able to voice their opinion on this proposal amongst other issues. Increasing recycling performance to 50% by 2020 is a big challenge, and it is thought this 10% increase will be difficult to achieve with the small green boxes currently used and the time-consuming nature of the current kerbside sorting method. A public consultation has been launched on Doncaster Council’s approach to waste and recycling. Residents will be able to complete an online survey until 8 January 2016, and the results will help inform future decisions about these services. You can complete the survey at https://www. surveymonkey.com/r/WasteRecyConsultation My surgeries 2nd Friday of every month - Bawtry Community Library from 10am – 12pm (in the back room) Austerfield – I attend every Austerfield Parish Council meeting and can arrange to see you before or after the meeting. I will be attending the lunch club which is usually held on 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Twitter @CllrRachaelB Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Kind Regards

community Misson Pre School Fundraising Fashion Evening On November 26th Misson Pre School held a fun fashion evening to raise vital funds for purchasing new equipment for Pre School. Misson Primary School very generously allowed us to use their hall again for the event, which is in its third year now.

Firstly; a very Happy New Year to you all! 2015 was a great year for our town and towards the end of the year we saw a few new businesses set up shop in Bawtry.

Over 90 ladies attended, and as the prosecco was flowing, they all had a brilliant time deciding which of the heavily discounted high street clothes they wanted to buy. Red Frog Fashions brought a wide selection of clothes that were each modelled and then people were able to purchase them before they moved on to showing us what was on offer next.

In the quaintness of Dower House Square we welcome the Cheese Cave Deli and The Gray Rooms Coffee Shop. Over the road in The Courtyard Old English Chesterfields and Automize Home Cinema Installation have joined the team of businesses down there too.

We were incredibly well supported by local businesses who were generous in their donations of raffle prizes and in total on the evening with refreshment sales, raffle ticket sales and entry ticket sales we raised over £1000. For a small Pre School this is a fantastic achievement and will enable us to now think about what new equipment we are going to purchase first.

If, after the festive season, you have quite simply lost enthusiasm for shopping, eating and drinking then perhaps you may be considering turning your efforts towards a new or improved health and fitness regime.

Thoughts are already turning to how to make the evening even bigger and better for next year, if anyone would like any details about when the tickets go on sale or would like to receive information about any of the other fundraising events we are organising throughout 2016 please send an email to missonpreschool@ hotmail.co.uk T 36

Or, if your prefer to take your workout outside, why not join Jon Reynolds and his Military Fitness Training sessions which take place at Bawtry Memorial Sports Ground. Forgive Dear Friends, and Forget! My two-month-old TV could not switch on for two nights so I had to call in the engineer. Interestingly, the engineer came in and just switched it on with the same remote control that I have used on many occasions to try to do the same. I was annoyed with myself and I had to explain to the engineer that it was the second experience in a month. Just after the engineer had left and I was trying to deal with my anger, I flipped the channel over and it landed on the ‘Victoria Derbyshire Show’. A news item ‘I forgave the driver who cost me my leg’ came up so I decided to sit on the sofa and watch. The comment was that, ‘a cyclist who lost her leg when she was hit by a skip lorry hugged and forgave the driver of the lorry’. Afterwards, as I was reflecting on the story, I was reminded of a similar story in Genesis in the bible. The story is told of a young man Joseph, whom most of us associate with his coat of many colours. His brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt because of his dreams. However, after many years, God helped him to become a prominent man in the political life in Egypt. Later on, these same brothers went into Egypt looking for food and by God’s doing, they found themselves in Joseph’s courtyard. Initially, they did not realise that they were in their brother’s house. Joseph had the chance for revenge and put them into prison but there was a twist. He introduced himself to his brothers, forgave them and later settled them in the best part of the land in Egypt. On Joseph’s part, reconciliation was achieved through his sincere and total forgiveness of his brothers for the evil they had committed against him. Forgiveness is a vital part of the Christian experience. It helps us to relate with God and become responsible to other people, even our enemies. I wonder if I can refer you to two of the many passages in the bible that talk about forgiveness. They are as follows: “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins (Matthew 6:14-15). Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour 38

and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you (Ephesians 4:31-32). Yes! God has forgiven you of your past because of Jesus Christ and he wants you to make a fresh start in 2016. The power is in your hands now whether you want to forgive whoever had offended you or not. Joseph forgave his awful brothers and Victoria Lebrec, the cyclist, forgave the skip lorry driver who took her leg off. She claimed in the news item that she has set herself free from bitterness and resentment and hence, moved on. Likewise, Joseph told his brothers, “Do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you” (Genesis 45: 5) God had been with Joseph in Egypt, and then God saved the lives of his whole family through him. I wonder whether you have realised that God may have taken you through your experiences so that you could lead other people to a better situation after forgiving the perpetrators. In doing so, you could have saved yourself and them from trouble. However, some situations may be very difficult and need time to heal. It may take months or years but forgiveness is still available. This year, may I suggest to you that you use the examples of Victoria Legrec and Joseph the dreamer, to bring reconciliation into your life and that of others so that you can be in a better position to make a great start. Have a blessed and prosperous New Year. Yours sincerely,

Slimming World members lose an amazing 3,300 stone since January 2015! This New Year thousands of people in Blyth, Bawtry, Tickhill and Rossington areas will be embarking on a bid to lose weight and get fit. And Slimming World Consultants in the area are urging dieters to ditch the fad diets and choose a weight-loss plan they can sustain. New research shows that UK weight-loss organisation Slimming World is the most popular and easiest plan to stick to in the long term. Nicky who runs a Slimming World group in Bawtry, says faddy diets aren’t the answer: “Lots of people start January with the best of intentions but by the end of the month so many of them have given up, defeated by hunger, boredom or feelings of deprivation. I want people to know that losing weight doesn’t have to be that way, that not all slimming attempts are doomed and not all ‘diets’ are the same. It’s easy to be wooed by the plans that promise the fastest loss, but it’s really important this New Year that slimmers think sensibly about which plan they choose and look at which offer the most chance of long-term success. Diets based on deprivation can be very unhealthy and are almost impossible to keep up, meaning you’re bound to throw in the towel and will probably be left feeling like a failure by February!” Christine who runs the Tickhill Slimming World group says the key is to choose a realistic healthy eating plan and get support to make lifestyle changes. And Jackie the Rossington consultant is urging slimmers to choose Slimming World after research by Marketing Week magazine, published this January, found that the organisation is the UK’s most popular way to lose weight. A separate recent YouGov poll of 2,000 slimmers who had tried one of the two most popular UK weight-loss clubs in the past two years also discovered people found Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan easier to follow and simpler to stick with in the long run. The YouGov survey found that 92% of respondents who were attending a Slimming World group said they didn’t feel hungry and 88% enjoyed being able to eat normal every day foods instead of being pushed to purchase ready meals or convenience foods. 40

Bawtry Today

Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan encourages members to satisfy their appetite on hundreds of healthy ‘Free Foods’, including fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish, eggs, pulses and fatfree dairy, freely without the need for weighing, counting and measuring. It means they can enjoy all their favourite meals just by making small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat and still eat the same healthy dishes as the rest of their family. The beauty of Slimming World’s plan is that it addresses the psychological needs of slimmers: “When people think about losing weight they expect to feel hungry and deprived, but since it began in 1969 Slimming World’s plan has always been about helping people to lose weight without feeling like that. Human nature means that the minute something’s forbidden you only want it more, so with Slimming World no foods, even high-fat snacks and alcohol, are banned, they’re just limited. Because you can satisfy your appetite on ‘Free Foods’ you don’t ever have to feel hungry and it’s easier to reduce the amount of unhealthy foods you’re eating so, over time with the right support, this new balanced way of eating becomes second nature” said Dani the Blyth consultant In fact getting support is as important as changing eating habits: “There’s no denying that changing the habits of a lifetime can be challenging and there will be times, perhaps when your weight loss slows down or a ‘bad week’ leads to a temporary gain, when it can be tempting to give up. That’s where getting support week in, week out to make changes and keep them up comes in. At Slimming World members develop the skills and tools to overcome the psychological and emotional challenges that every slimmer faces at some point, including learning to be kind to yourself and get ‘back on the horse’ when you do have a blip. Anyone who wants to lose weight this New Year will find a world of support at the their nearest Slimming World group” continued Christine. To join a Slimming World group near you, see the advert in this magazine or alternatively visit www.slimmingworld.com for more information. T TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club. January again and time for New Year Resolutions. The trouble is that most resolutions are entirely forgotten by February (if not sooner!): something more permanent is needed. What about Probus? The Tickhill and Bawtry club has just celebrated its 20th anniversary and so must qualify for a degree of permanence. We are a friendly lot of retired professional and businessmen (we interpret those terms quite widely) who meet at 10.00am on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at the Millstone Hotel. A New Year resolution to come along to one of our meetings as a visitor could well tempt you to permanent membership. Each month we have a speaker, afterwards many of our members can be found in the bar and some stay on to lunch. You will be most welcome. Our programme for the next three months is as follows: 14th Jan. AGM and "Annual Review" by Steve Payne. (Sounds boring but won't be!) 28th Jan. "Air Ambulance" by Tracey Bull. 11th Feb. "Old Doncaster" by Malcolm Barnsdale. 25th Feb. "Inland waterways" by John Hoare. 10th Mar. "Don't you know who I am?" by Peter Slater. 24th Mar. Ladies lunch. (Members and their partners only). Make a resolution to visit us and see if you can resist the temptation of membership - most can't! T

ROSSINGTON MALE VOICE CHOIR are again appealing for new members to join us. We meet each Wednesday in the Ragusa Drive Community Centre on Radburn Road, Rossington at 7.30.p.m. Men and boys from eight to eighty are very welcome and a warm and convivial reception is assured. An interest in singing and enjoyment of social appreciation is more important than actual singing talent. Please come along and listen to our practice, then join in if you wish to. It could be the start of an interesting and stimulating hobby. Please contact Allan Robson on 01302 860623 for more details if necessary. T 44

Happy New Year from Retford Ramblers Group. Why not start off the New Year by becoming a member of the Retford Group of the Ramblers Association. The 2016 Programme starts on 3rd January with an 8 mile moderate paced walk starting from Vicar Water, just the thing to kick start the new regime to get out in the fresh air and take some exercise. Other walks for January are – Hodsock and North Carlton, Worksop Manor and a short morning walk taking in Barlborough and Harthill. The Group meet in the Chapelgate Car Park usually for a 9.30 am departure, car sharing is always encouraged with a voluntary contribution to be made to the driver. TICKHILL ACOUSTIC MUSIC NIGHTS If you enjoy music, like playing a musical instrument & singing, then you are welcome to start the New Year by joining us in the pub at the Scarbrough Arms. We are a group of locals from Tickhill & the surrounding villages who have been getting together for over a decade to play the music we like in a friendly, informal pub atmosphere. There is an eclectic mix of old and modern, examples being folk, country, blues, sixties, popular, classical, and there is no restriction on style or genre, even humour is permitted. The acoustic guitar is very popular, but other instruments like the mandolin, banjo, flute, fiddle, ukulele, concertina, accordion, keyboard, bodhran, tin whistle, melodeon and harmonica have been played, some regularly and some rarely. The music nights are occasions to be enjoyed by all ages and abilities and everyone is equally respected and appreciated whether a beginner or professional. Singing and drinking has been part of our history and culture for centuries. So help us to make these nights even better and keep the tradition going for another decade by coming along. You will receive a friendly welcome. Second & Last Tuesday, from 8.00pm Scarbrough Arms, Tickhill Contact: Email mjthorns@yahoo.co.uk Tel. Mike 01302 953975 TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Gardening resolutions I

’m a sucker for resolutions. I make loads every year though I have to admit I break most of them too. But it’s January and time for a spot of gardening self-improvement. To this end here are my gardening resolutions.

1. I will take a daily walk around my plot and pull out a few weeds as I go. I will not wait until I can’t stick a pin between the dandelions. Let’s face it gardeners are great procrastinators. But by doing a little and often we can keep our plots looking spick and span.

2. I will not leave seed sowing until it’s too late! This is my personal nemesis. I get carried away by all the glorious seed catalogues, order dozens of packets then pop them in a drawer and forget about them.

3. I will plant all the plants I buy from a nursery as soon as a get them home and definitely before their flowers drop off and they turn up their little green toes. Plants bought from a nursery, especially those in cell pack, are already in less than ideal conditions and letting them dehydrate further will make for a sick, leggy plant more prone to disease. Preparation is the key here. I will make sure I have the correct pots, enough potting compost and the time to spare before I buy. 46

Bawtry Today

4. I will clean my gardening tools at the end of each day spent gardening. This is sensible because dirty tools can spread disease. Mild bleach (one part bleach to 10 parts water) or an organic cleaner, which I prefer, will make sure they’re ready for use next time.

5. I will buy another water butt and water my plants faithfully, particularly my pots. Lack of water produces weak root systems. If I know I won’t have the time I’ll invest in an irrigation system. 6. I will start another compost bin. it’s not difficult and will help the environment as I’ll be able to recycle even more of my waste vegetable matter. There are small drums and bins which will suit even the tiniest spot. 7.

I will help wildlife by making sure I provide habitats for birds, bugs and beasties. Any effort I put in will be repaid tenfold. A garden is a little ecosystem. If it functions well there will be natural pest control, pollination and soil conditioning. Those are my resolutions. You may have different ones and that’s fine. I’m sure we’ll break a few along the way but no-one said the path to perfection, particularly gardening perfection was easy. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278

Tickhill and District Lions May we start by wishing you all a Happy New Year and saying a big thank you to everyone who supported our Grand Christmas Draw which was held at Tickhill Cricket Club on December 15th. To the companies, listed below, who donated prizes, the many friends who also provided items, the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the tickets and, of course, to all of you who purchased the tickets -thank you very much. If you were one of the many lucky winners then we have probably already been in touch but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we escorted Santa on his sleigh round most of the roads within the Tickhill and District area giving out hundreds of Christmas cards and receiving many cards and wish lists. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. It is wonderful to see the looks on the faces of the young children when they meet Santa.

At Tickhill and District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs so you can be sure that every penny you donated will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year. So thank you once again from Tickhill and District Lions and from all the people that your donations will help. List of local Companies who have donated Grand Christmas Draw prizes. 15 Complete Sponsored walk for Aurora A group consisting of people that have had cancer, family, Specialists and Nurses from the Jasmine Suite and Vauxhall set off from Worksop at 7.30am and arrived at Vauxhall Perry's on Wheatley Hall Road (sponsors of this year’s Aurora Fashion Show) at 2pm. They walked in the dark, rain, sun, wind and more rain. 22 miles was completed in such a quick time to be met by Santa who was attending Perry’s Christmas event!

Misson & Springs WI It began with a ball of wool, fluffy and light, a myriad of colours and prosaically compared to a fluorescent tennis ball; we passed it round and rolled it in our hands and then Sue poured boiling water on. It was much reduced in size and cutting through the centre revealed all the colours we had chosen to use to make a bead for a necklace. Sue Hawkmoon, our guest on Wednesday 25th November introduced us to the art of felt making and the many different applications which spring from the central process of turning a raw material into cloth. Felt is the oldest form of textile and whereas making felt for practical purposes such as tents and clothing is still practised by nomadic peoples, elsewhere, it is nowadays generally used as a medium in textile art. Sue has a studio in Brigg, and she outlined some of the basic methods of making felt, such as wet felting and needle felting She had a wide variety of materials from which to make the finished cloth - merino wool in a multitude of colours, natural wool, silk etc. - the possibilities are endless. Like many artists, Sue is always looking for ways to develop her skills and we enjoyed seeing all the tools of her trade, including an original washboard which she sometimes uses as part of the manufacturing process. We did not have long enough to do everything we would have wished, but did have the opportunity to try needle felting and we all participated in producing the necklace bead. We hope to invite her again to run a workshop. Sue has a website which shows the original 54

The money raised so far is £800, if anyone would like to donate to this local charity – Aurora, please email aurorateamfs@gmail.com or message on facebook Aurora Fashion Show or ring Jenny Siswick 07836 537537 and you will be assisted with this. Or you can send a cheque made payable to Aurora and post to Aurora Fashion Show Team, 15 Gleneagles Drive, Normanton, WF6 1WD T and interesting designs she makes from the felt she produces - bouquets of wedding flowers, jewellery, waistcoats, soft toys and each piece is unique. Do look on www.hawkmooncrafts.co.uk for examples. Our Christmas party on 9th December was our now traditional pie and peas, as an antidote to turkey and Christmas pudding. The Community Centre in Misson was beautifully decorated for the festive events which had begun on 29th November with the Christmas Fair where our WI cake stall is a regular fixture and is appreciated by everyone who enjoys home baking. Next year’s programme has been planned and we are looking forward to new faces as well as return visits from speakers, whom we have previously enjoyed. Our first meeting of the new year will be on Wednesday 27th January when we are pleased to welcome Margaret Byrne from Bawtry who will brighten a winter’s evening with tale from her travels in India. We shall also be collecting subscription for 2016 and do hope to see all our old members as well as new ones on that evening. As always, our activities will be accompanied by an endless supply of refreshments, including homemade cake. We always have time for a chat and would love you to join us. We meet on the last Wednesday of every month at 7.30 pm at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson; don’t hesitate to turn up, or phone our secretary, Lynda Redfern on 07796975578 for any further information. Bawtry Town Council - JANUARY 2016 MEMORIAL SPORTS FIELD Our very grateful thanks go to Matt Brearley who is the mainstay of the Bawtry Action for Sport and Recreation BARS for volunteering his time to pursue funding for the pavilion. Matt, with help from Councillor Blake, has pulled together all the funding for the project and he is moving to engage an Architect and Structural Engineer funded by the already committed monies from Bawtry Town Council. This work could commence in January 2016 and we could have a new multipurpose pavilion within the year. Well done Matt!

and to the site. All the routes were North from the site onto the B1369 Bank End Road to Blaxton and then not specified. Members of the group said that the HGV’s could turn left at Blaxton and not right. IGAS said that their preferred option would be to turn right and not go through Bawtry or Misson. The planners said that this would be added to the terms of the planning permission and IGAS explained that all their vehicles and contract vehicles were fitted with trackers and there would be penalties if the instructions were not obeyed. Further information will be made available.

MARKET HILL The Bawtry Retail Association’s event on the 22nd of November was very well attended and enjoyed by all. Our Thanks go to BRA for a very well organised and successful event. Bawtry Town Council sponsored the major attraction of a magnificent Carousel. The council members collected the fares for the rides and recouped much of the costs of the sponsorship. There has been a site meeting with DMBC regarding the footpath along the length of Market Hill, in pursuit of possible funding for maintenance and adoption by DMBC. Bawtry Town Council has spent £400 to provide emergency repairs to these footpaths adjoining Market Hill car park. Also we will be going out to tender for interim repairs to the Market Hill car park surface in the new year.

FRACKING At a recent CLG meeting attended by Planning Officers from Bassetlaw District Council and IGAS re routes for HGVs from the proposed pilot well at Misson Springs, several proposals were tabled for routes from
