I’m excited and impressed by the vast number of possibilities the Toastmasters educational program offers. Communication and leadership are two words we hear so often that we can become numb to them. Communication gets our message out and understood to the right people in the right way and leadership helps us guide others along their path to dream fulfillment. Most Toastmasters begin by learning how to speak in front of people, then go on to discover the excitement that comes from helping others to grow by serving in one of the leadership position like Sergeant at Arms, President, Governor, etc. Forrest Gump’s mother said: „Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get“. It's rather like Toastmasters. What does a box of Toastmasters’ have to offer? There are many opportunities to develop our leadership strengths: The numerous educational

programs and workshops provided by Toastmasters International, the Youth Leadership Program and even the High Performance Leadership project where we hone our skills with a project of our own choice. Although these don’t have to be strictly related to Toastmasters they are the perfect opportunity to promote Toastmasters to others who might be interested in learning what we've learnt. Have fun, share your box of chocolates and enjoy the pursuit of Fulfilling Your Dreams. Have a great day. Benjamin Bruehl, District Governor

Supporting the Next Generation We all became Toastmasters because we know that we can benefit in some way or another but have you ever thought that Toastmasters can go beyond our club or our members? Two members of Erlangen Toastmasters club, Morag Mathieson and Fiona Whiting came together on an amazing journey. Fiona Whiting is a Middle School English teacher at the Franconian International School (FIS) where the students complete the International Baccalaureate in Grade 12. One part of the English course requires that the students prepare and give a presentation on a set topic, which is videotaped and sent to examiners. The students had no problem with their academic knowledge but many were insecure and nervous when speaking in front of a video camera. I am sure lots of us can identify with that! Fiona realized that Toastmasters could help her students so she mentioned it to a fellow Toastmaster Morag Mathieson who recommended the Youth Leadership program. As soon as support for the program was given from the FIS English department, both ladies got hands on and were eager to see the results of the Youth Leadership program.

The Youth Leadership program was run over eight weeks as an after school activity. Morag and Fiona created a small group of 10 volunteer students. Following the Youth Leadership manual they practiced giving speeches, doing table topics, sharing evaluations and filling in other regular Toastmasters’ meeting roles. The students particularly liked the body language module and found it very valuable. After only 8 weeks all students were far more confident. Fiona and Morag described the students’ improvement “like the contrast between night and day, it was amazing to see how quickly they learn.” Fiona and Morag agree that the program was very successful and they highly recommend it to any Toastmaster, club, or school that wants to give their students a higher level of self confidence when presenting. Toastmasters is more than just a club to teach us how to speak in public. We can help our communities with the experience that we have gained in Toastmasters. Could you imagine yourself having that knowledge and confidence when you were 17 years old? We can support the next generation.

District Officer's interview: Didier Dehem LGM

Didier Dehem

What did you say about yourself in your Ice-Breaker speech?

Three challenges: • having one new club per area, • being more efficient • setting up club building committees

I explained the method I used to prepare my speech. It was an indirect presentation of me

I am Didier Dehem your Lieutenant Governor Marketing. This position is dedicated to supporting the District's mission and in particular the issues to promoting new clubs and supporting membership of existing clubs.

My biggest challenges have been: Running the position of area governor and of Lieutenant Governor Marketing. I liked very much being president of my club: "Le Club des Orateurs" Some people hesitate being club president because of the symbolic state of representing a club. The position of Lieutenant Governor Marketing opens the doors to the international, outside the district, it is very exciting. What are your objectives for this year as a District Officer? I have three challenges: • having one new club per area, • being more efficient through delegating, planning and giving recognition, • setting up club building committees at division and district levels.

How would you now introduce yourself to the Toastmasters in District 59?

What has been the biggest challenge during your Toastmasters experience?

Home Club: Le Club des Orateurs

What did you take with you from the Convention? The Convention is really an International event. I met so many people coming from all around the world. It was the time of networking and exchanging expertise. The Q and A sessions with the candidates running for International positions were a great opportunity to discover the International Policy of Toastmasters International. I learned that our District 59 has its own characteristics: it is a very large district, there are many countries and many languages and we are very dynamic.

15 : 15 To have 15 new members and an average of 15 club members attend every meeting • Organized a special event partnered with two key groups. • Old Town Association of Zug provided the venue and promoted the event. • Zug4You promoted the event and sponsored the drinks.

Toastmasters Zug had lost many active members over the past couple of years, and at the end of the 2009/2010 year, concern among club members was obvious. It wasn’t unusual to have a turnout of six members at club meetings. Members were not too enthusiastic about bringing guests. So at the beginning of the Toastmasters year, we created a simple yet “sticky” slogan, 15 : 15. It’s actually more than a slogan. It’s a vision. Here’s what it stood for: • By the end of this Toastmasters year, our goal was to have 15 new members and an average of 15 club members attend every meeting. We’ve been very transparent with the members, and with guests. We told them the club was at a low point BUT we were energized to rebuild it and confident we would. We prioritized certain meetings in advance for “bring a guest” nights, and the entire membership went in to hosting mode. Meeting size grew and we picked up six members in August and September. This earned us the Smedley Award, and morale was growing both within the committee as well as throughout the entire club. We decided to pull out all the stops. Promo Event We planned a special event on the 25th of October through the

intense work of our VP PR and with the support of the rest of the committee. The real differentiator was that we partnered with two key groups. One was the Old Town Association of Zug, who provided a beautiful gothic venue in the heart of the Old Town, and who promoted the event through their channels. The other was Zug4You, a networking group targeting expatriates and aligned with an online expat news service called The Zug Post. Zug4You promoted the event within its readership and networking circles, and also sponsored the drinks at our normal dinner break. Toastmasters Zug provided light dinner snacks for guests as well as members. We asked our existing members to step up to the importance of the event with prepared speeches and roles, and they did in a big time way. We had 20 guests at the promo event, many of whom even accepted the challenge of Table Topics. Our host from Zug Old Town gave a small presentation about the Old Town after the dinner break and, during the dinner break, asked one of our veteran members to evaluate the presentation. A handful of the guests from the promo event returned to the next meeting, while others said they were definitely planning to come to future meetings. More importantly, word has gotten out beyond those guests, and at the next normal club meeting, we had a total of 10 NEW guests, one who joined on the spot and several others who said they were probably going to join soon. With guests and members, we had 27 people at that following meeting. The morale in the club is as high as it’s been in years. Members are enthusiastic about bringing guests, and guests are as enthusiastic about returning. We’re confident we’ll hit our objective of 15 : 15. It’s more than a slogan. Jack Vincent CC, CL Club President

District Officer's interview: Morag Mathieson, Secretary What did you tell about yourself in your Ice-Breaker speech? In my home town in Scotland when people die it is very common for a notice to appear in the local newspaper to announce the death and for friends and family to write short comments about the person. In my ice breaker speech I spoke about what my friends and family would tell the club about me. For example- in my family I have one brother who is 12 years older than me. My mother would have told the club that had I been born first, I would definitely have been an only child! Chiefly because as a small child I preferred to be awake and not asleep, unlike my brother who loved to sleep. My colleagues who, at my leaving party, asked the DJ to play a particular song that they thought summed up my approach to work. It was the song "It's got to be perfect" by Fairground Attraction. The song has the line: "Too many people take second best, I won't take anything less. It's got to be perfect". As a pharmacist accuracy in my work is really important so in this case attention to detail is really significant! My previous boss at work who named me "party girl" because whenever she wanted to have a team party or, teambuilding event would always ask me to organize it because she could trust me to come up with something interesting and to take care of the details and get others involved. How would you now introduce yourself to the Toastmasters in District 59? Since my ice breaker I have achieved Advanced Communicator Silver and am working towards Advanced Leader Silver. I would tell them of the steps along the way and how I found opportunities

to learn and develop in many different places - the challenge of giving a brief speech on a subject that you know lots about which I had to face while doing the Advanced Manual Interpersonal Communication, the opportunities to pay tribute to many people who have been important to me in Toastmasters and beyond while working on the Special Occasion Speeches manual, the inspiration I found in working with teenagers on the Youth Leadership Program at a local school, the steep learning curve in organizing and chairing the District Conference in Bamberg with only 5 months to prepare, the sense of satisfaction and the realization of how much you have learned when mentoring new Toastmasters and training and mentoring new club officers. What has been the biggest challenge during your Toastmasters experience? Probably being target speaker for a German language evaluation contest. I had never given a speech in German at Toastmasters before, so it was hugely nerve wracking. I held the lectern shaking for a few moments before beginning to speak. By the end I was relieved and satisfied that it was a good speech and I had most definitely stepped out of my comfort zone! It helped me appreciate what so many Toastmasters in District 59 experience when they give speeches in a language which is not their native tongue. What are your objectives for this year as a District Officer? As District Secretary I want to support my fellow District Officers with administrative skills to deliver on the District Mission. On a personal note I plan to complete the Advanced Leader Silver award.

Morag Mathieson Home Club: Erlangen Toastmasters Club

2010-2011 Division D Governor 2009-2010 District Secretary 2008-2009 Toastmaster of the Year My colleagues summed up my approach to work. "Too many people take second best, I won't take anything less. It's got to be perfect". "...the realisation of how much you have learned when mentoring new Toastmasters and training and mentoring new club officers." As Division D Governor I would like to support my Area Governors and their teams - to increase participation in club officer training and in area and division events - to build up the membership in clubs which are struggling - to build at least 3 new clubs in the division

Prague Toastmasters Clubs Showcase Following an invitation from Andrea Teichmannová (Queen’s Town TM) and Pavlína Sládková, All Committees Meeting (Co-Meet) of the Erasmus Student Network, it was agreed to provide a demonstration workshop at their event in Prague. Knowing the age of these international students, I thought it was appropriate to gather together a band of our younger Toastmasters from the two Prague clubs. The initiative was to provide a forum for ESN students to gain some fundamentals in public speaking and presentations. We, in turn, saw the event as an opportunity to showcase Toastmasters not only in the Czech Republic but also as an organization worthy of consideration to gain valuable skills in leadership and communication. We had about 18 students from Spain, Portugal, Poland, the Ukraine, Slovenia and the Czech Republic.

Above: Jarda Sladek and Maija Kadlekova Maija Kadlecova asking a Table Topic Question On the right: Q and A session

After a short introduction, we had a prepared speech by Michal Juhas. This being the first speech Michal has given outside Bohemian TM; I congratulate him for his poise, confidence, and credibility. His speech was evaluated by Honza Buzak from Prague Speakers TM. On completing his evaluation, Honza invited the students to also give Michal some feedback. We then played a gesture game where individuals had to read a sentence which contained a phrase to be gestured. This brought lots of laughs which in turn encouraged more animation in the following Table Topics session. Prague Speakers' members Jarda Sladek first explained impromptu speaking, then Maija Kadlecova put us through with an interesting Table Topics. The session closed with a question and answer session and some feedback for us Toastmasters. We all left having had fun and feeling a sense of achievement.

Toastmasters on Stage at the “Global Speakers Summit 2011” A very special opportunity for District 59 Toastmasters is coming in April 2011. The Global Speakers Summit is coming to the Netherlands! Who will receive the meeting announcements? The agenda e-mail system How to send attachments To send attachments using the easy-Speak Email system, first you upload your attachment to the Forum by creating a Topic and adding the items to the Topic. Each uploaded item has its own URL address which can be included in your E-mail. Or you could include the link to the Topic post in your E-mail. The difference is that you must be logged in to view a Topic but, to download an uploaded item directly from its own link; you need not be logged in. The big advantage with this way of using attachments is that you can revise your documents in the Club Forum anytime and keep the same link. When I sent a registration form for a club contest, I keep revising it as I found ways to improve it. Since, I had already told everyone the link to the registration document, they always downloaded the latest version. One word of caution. The Club Forum is a secure, central and convenient place to save important club documents. Search engines cannot index in the Forum because it is behind the login wall.

The 'agenda e-mail' feature allows you to send a series of emails telling your members about the meetings, the assigned roles, and the vacant roles. There are five e-mails in the system. First E-mail This e-mail is a general introduction and a reminder about the meeting and may be sent to some or all users of your club, selecting them by membership 'status'. The body of the e-mail is available for you to edit and the reply links are inserted automatically at the bottom of your message. The e-mail ends with a request to click on one of the links to advice on attendance. The requested reply date is calculated automatically from the meeting date and the club settings. The remaining e-mails are sent only to members whose status allows them to speak or to take a role or who have already clicked on the link to say that they will attend. Second E-mail The second e-mail is sent as soon as possible after assigning users to roles. It thanks those that replied to the first e-mail and advises users that they do not have a role at this meeting but, if the club allows this, suggests visiting the web-site to volunteer if someone who has been assigned a role drops out. Third E-mail The third e-mail should be sent at the same time as you send the second e-mail. This one asks for confirmation to accept a specific role, and gives the user any comments about the role and, if

appropriate, about the location. If you need to re-run this e-mail after someone has refused a role or cannot attend the meeting it will ONLY be sent to the users newly assigned a role. There is also an option to resend this e-mail to anyone that has not replied within a selected time. Fourth E-mail The fourth e-mail asks for volunteers to visit the web-site and take roles that are not currently assigned. If your club settings do not allow users to volunteer for unassigned roles through the web-site the email asks volunteers to contact the VPE. Fifth E-mail This last email is used as a reminder and to provide an easy clickable link back to the web-site for users to view or print the agenda before the meeting. Normally, this would only be sent to users who have a role or who are attending the meeting. There is an option to send it to anyone whose attendance is unknown. The meeting manager is automatically set to 'watch this agenda for changes' and will receive an e-mail when a user accepts or rejects a role. Note for Area / Division / District Events: E-mails one, three, and five are available for officers training and contests. In these e-mails, the addressees will automatically include all the officers, who are recognized by TI for officer training within that unit, PLUS all users who have ticked the box to say that they will attend the meeting.

The intention of this article is to provide to fellow Toastmasters an impression and insight to a real High Performance Leadership project (HPL). I will share some information of my personal Toastmasters background, the project background, its execution, my experience and so on. My name is Goetz Mueller. I attended my first Toastmasters meeting in November 2005 and joined a German speaking club, Verdi Rhetorik Klub, Stuttgart in January 2006. I have completed the various Toastmasters education steps. I have served in several Toastmasters club officers’ roles and beyond including club president and area governor. The initial attempt to start an HPL project was in 2008, when I lead a team for translating the CL manual into German language. Unfortunately, that project came up to speed so quickly that I wasn't able to properly set-up the HPL guidance committee and to use the translation project for that purpose. The next opportunity for an HPL project was five year charter anniversary of my home club, the Verdi Rhetorik Klub Stuttgart. In December 2009 the club executive council decided to extend a normal Toastmasters meeting to the five year charter anniversary celebration and gave me the task to run the preparation project. The celebration meeting was decided to run well after the summer break on 4th October, 2010. For the guidance committee as well as for the project team I asked a balanced mix of experienced Toastmasters, new members, new and former club officers. The

recruitment for the project team started in December 2009 and the last person joined mid of March 2010. To run the project I used the five phase model of the International Project Management Association of which I earned a Project Manager certificate in 2009. The first phase - project initiation was the already described decision in December 2009 to have the celebration meeting. The second phase project definition - was the recruitment of the project team and outlining the "look and feel" of the celebration in collaboration with the club officers. This was done in April. Most of the project work was done in the third phase - project planning. Tasks comprised to book the meeting venue, to order the catering, to invite the guest and keynote speakers, and to set up the agenda for the celebration meeting. The final steps of the planning were taken in September when the expected number of participants and guests was known

for ordering the right amount of finger food. As long as the planning phase was as short was the fourth phase project execution - which was the celebration meeting itself on 4th October 2010. The evening of the 4th October was split in the final preparation of the venue and catering, get-together of participants and guests, the meeting itself according to an ordinary TM meeting agenda, and the final serving of food and beverage with small talk between attendees. The final and fifth phase - project conclusion consisted of a feedback request from the project team members and the payment of the catering bills. During the project we were facing several challenges. One of them was to keep the motivation on a high level due the quite long duration of the planning phase from May to September. Another was virtuality as more communication was by email than by meeting face to face. Then, a person left the team because of the personal workload in other areas. It was also a challenge to get responses to the invitations we had sent out to club members and guests.

Apart of the challenges we also had some failures. Unfortunately, we were not able to get any representatives of the GermanAmerican associations in the Stuttgart area nor the visit of a camera crew from a local TV station although we were quite close to it. This was mainly caused by the more publicly interesting incidents regarding Stuttgart 21 that spoiled our plans in that direction. However and fortunately the celebration meeting was very well received from all participants including the area governor from Karlsruhe. We got very positive feedback for all the aspects of the meeting including the keynote speeches by the head of the municipal culture office and the regional head of the union that host our meetings. We also had a story in a local event guide and some online press releases. In conclusion, the HPL project was a very interesting experience, quite different from an ordinary project management perspective, mainly due to the non-profit and informal environment in which the project was running. I would like to encourage all fellow Toastmasters to use not only the communication track of the Toastmasters educational program but also the leadership track with its different but similarly useful parts of which the High Performance Leadership program is an important final stage. My next and final step to earn the DTM award is the foundation of a new Toastmaster club in the Stuttgart area for which we clearly have the potential regarding the number of inhabitants in the area.

President's Distinguished District: District 59 - Continental Europe made it to rank #6 of worldwide 80 districts. Which is an amazing accomplishment - of a huge team: over 4500 members, 54 district officers who voluntary served the 153 clubs + 22 new ones. We truly exemplifed the Toastmasters International mission and vision. It takes some of work and dedication to reach such a milestone. TI's vision: "Toastmasters International empowers people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. Through our member clubs, people throughout the world can improve their communication and leadership skills, and find the courage to change. " What makes us proud is that these names are the living proof that Toastmasters works.
