Hermann Park is located in the heart of Houston, near downtown, the medical center, and the museum district In 2015, Hermann Park Conservancy started working towards an updated master plan that outlined what the next 20 years would look like for the park The Commons at Hermann Park is a major milestone in that 20 year plan The Commons at Hermann Park is a 26 acre area designed to bring family and friends together Landscape Art served as one of the main subcontractors for Forney Construction on the project. We salvaged trees for use on other projects in the park, installed close to 10,000 linear feet of underground drainage, created new decomposed granite trails, as well as refreshed existing ones, and installed playground mulch All new site furnishings were added, including benches, picnic tables, bike racks, movable furniture, and BBQ grills. Landscaping this new space included irrigation, planting 1,041 trees, 180,980 plants, and close to 400,000 square feet of new sod (over 800 pallets) A major part of the landscaping was the addition of new soil profiles We utilized stockpiled onsite soil that was harvested by the civil contractors, prior to Landscape Art being onsite. We also imported soil for use on the project Some planting areas had as much as 18” of new soil In total, over 21,000 cy of soil was needed to complete the project We embedded specialty cobble into concrete channels designed to take water from the water play areas to a large play sand area A huge part of the project was the installation of 1,203 TONS of boulders These were used as structural components of the project, but also as large focal points in different areas A project of this magnitude is going to have many unique challenges, and you don’t always know what those are going to be until you start construction The boulder installation at The Commons at Hermann Park proved to be the most challenging piece of the job We have installed thousands of boulders on past jobs, but never on a job quite as complex as this one The boulders were holding grades that were integral to the integrity of the project This necessitated hundreds of hours sourcing the exact boulders at the quarry before they ever got to the jobsite Once they got to the site, it took even more time to select the right boulder for each location Special equipment was used to move the boulders safely and efficiently around the site There was so much packed into a relatively small space that just getting where you needed to go was a huge challenge itself The Commons at Hermann Park is a landmark project for Landscape Art It’s one that for years to come, we will be able to bring our family to and show them what we helped bring to life We were consistently working onsite for two years, and every person that worked on the site is extremely proud of what they contributed

Please Add a Description of Each Photo 1 Playground mulch, landscaping, and boulders in a play area called The Thicket 2 Limestone boulders were sourced from quarries to achieve both a “weathered” look and a “cut boulder” look We also planted this area early in the project, so that it would have more time to become established. 3. Boulders, landscaping, and benches seamlessly work together to encompass fun play areas 4 Boulders are used to guide visitors from area to area Plant rail fence was installed to keep children out of the newly planted areas The green fence allowed it to blend in with its surroundings and not stand out as much 5 When in the different play areas, the landscaping makes you feel like you are completely immersed in someplace other than the middle of Houston, TX 6 We installed boulders in the middle of the play areas with rubberized surfaces The boulders were utilized to create planting beds for large trees, as well as help the different areas tie together. 7. Pocket planting areas were installed within the large play structures 8 Weathered boulders were installed in the play sand area All of the water from the water play areas are directed to this area 9 Cut boulders lined the walkways in the water play areas They held the grade for the steep slopes behind them, as well as created lots of seating 10 We installed small individual cobble pieces within the concrete where the water play drained This decorative effect allowed you to easily see where the water pathways were 11 Each cobble piece was installed by hand, intermingled with the weathered boulders and cut boulders 12 The landscaping provided a beautiful backdrop for all the stone work You can see weathered boulders in the background that were installed as steps to access different levels 13 Large 100g trees were planted all over the site Moving large trees in tight areas was challenging Lots of communication between us, the general contractor, and the other subcontractors was a must 14 We created a wetland area, with a stone pathway through it All the water that drained from the water play areas drained into this area, before eventually making its way to the existing lake Wetland plants were chosen for this area to ensure the area thrived. 15. Once the water made its way through the wetland area, it would drain into the lake We created the boulder channels and planted on either side of it 16 The lake edge was transformed into a space that drew people in It now has ample seating for visitors to get up close and personal with the many ducks and turtles that call the lake home 17 The lake edge is an inviting attraction in the park, whether you’re feeding the ducks, looking at the water, or lounging with friends 18 The donor area was a very important space, since it honored those that made the project possible Flagstone, boulders, and planting were installed around donor signage. 19. Sod was installed throughout the park and large mulch rings were established around impressive existing trees 20 Decomposed granite trails make walking throughout the park very easy and accessible 21 Picnic tables are scattered throughout the park The landscaping around them creates privacy along the lake edge. 22. landscaping, decomposed granite, and existing trees along the lake edge make it a very inviting place to visit 23 The gorilla garden has a tropical feel, with interesting plants and trees chosen for the area 24 Large American Sycamore were planted in areas intended for people to be able to sit, eat, and take a break They are already providing a lot of needed shade 25 Huge areas that were once sparsely vegetated are now densely planted Areas like this are how we were able to plant almost 200,000 plants
