Last year we started a very exciting programme here at the Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis. It’s called R&D by the Sea. R&D by the Sea is the Marine Theatre’s nurturing programme for new and developing work. We all need space to think. Lyme Regis, set in the heart of England’s ONLY natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by 95 miles of truly stunning coastline with rocks recording 185 million years of the Earth’s history, has just that. It’s not often ideas come fully formed. We need time to delight, surprise, scare and confuse ourselves. To give ourselves fertile ground on which to develop. To invest in hours of research and then to forget all about it. This is where R&D by the Sea comes in. R&D by the Sea gives artists use of the theatre and its facilities, normally for a 5-day period, to develop their work. We’ve invited writers, actors, theatre makers and practitioners of all kinds to come to Lyme Regis. Unfold, unlock and explore a vision, a feeling, a thought. Draw from our landscapes, history, communities and people. And at the end of their week-long stay, we’ve invited these artists to share what they’ve found. With you. We’re very excited to be welcoming three artists to Lyme Regis this summer under the R&D by the Sea umbrella. Each sharing will be entirely different. It may last 10 minutes. It may last an hour. We can’t tell you much about the sharings, as they haven’t been made yet. All we ask is that you come along with a warm heart and an open mind. You’ll get a chance to chat to the company afterwards and fill out a feedback form with your thoughts. We’d love to hear what you think. Previous companies who have used the R&D by the Sea programme have gone on to tour the work both at home and abroad. We are very proud that RemoteControl had their piece La Donna è Mobile nominated for a Total Theatre Award at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. We’re also delighted that Ewan Wardrop, whose show The Bo Diddlers was R&D’ed with us in the spring of 2013, is returning this summer with the fully developed piece. (For more details see page 28.) For details of the artists involved this summer and their sharings, keep an eye on www.marinetheatre.com. If you’re an artist interested in applying for a place on the R&D by the Sea programme, please visit www.marinetheatre.com/rd-by-the-sea

Working in a building with a 118–year history can sometimes be a problem, and when that building is right next to the sea things can be even trickier. An extensive survey has revealed that in order to preserve the Marine, its two roofs are in desperate need of repair, with the pitch roof needing re-insulating, re-pitching and re-slating. Work to re-gutter, repair mortaring, paint the walls and treat the seafacing timbers, along with the addition of solar panels, will add to the longevity and the economic and environmental sustainability of the theatre. The total cost of this work is estimated to be somewhere in the region of £95,000.

The building has survived for generations through the support of the community. With your help we want to guarantee the people of Lyme Regis a theatre at the heart of the Jurassic Coast for another 118–years. We’ve got a great history of fantastic performance here in Lyme.

excellent, affordable nights out in Lyme. Unless we can fix the roof, that tradition is under threat. If you feel you’re able to make a contribution, however small, please visit www.marinetheatre.com. If you’d rather not donate online, please pop in to the theatre or send a cheque in the post made payable to LymeArts Community Trust. Any help is very, very gratefully received. Thank you.

Robin Ince Thursday 1st May

Kicking off this year’s Fossil Festival, Robin Ince – Sony Gold Award-winning comedian and science enthusiast (Radio 4’s Infinite Monkey Cage with Professor Brian Cox) – presents another in his line of unhinged stand-up comic lectures.

ink spots, Robin looks at the last 100 years of psychiatry, psychology and skewiff brain dabblings. Just how hard is it being a selfconscious being on planet earth?.

After dabbling in Darwin and Feynman, and cleaning out Schrodinger’s Cat, Robin now delves into his mind and possibly your mind too.

Police Dog Hogan are a high-energy and eclectic seven-piece, combining fiddle, banjo, mandolin, drums and guitars with knockout four-part harmonies in an exuberant fusing of country, pop, folk, and rocking urban bluegrass. You will probably know several of this extraordinary band. Tim Dowling (banjo), for example, writes a very popular weekly column in the Guardian’s Saturday supplement. Saturday Sun

plus support from Lily and Meg Saturday 24th May

Saturday Sun are a 4-piece from Swanage who take their name from the Nick Drake song, making music that echoes Drake’s 60s acoustic sound. A unique blend combining folk, rock and a touch of psychedelia, the mixture of musical influences from John Martyn to Pink Floyd creates a sound built on gentle, but intricate acoustic guitar work and expansive melodies. Vocalist Alex Hedley’s

range veers from falsetto to an earthy, almost growling baritone, giving even their most gentle tracks an emotional weight.

A Transport/Unicorn production

1001 Nights Sunday 25th May

Devised and directed by Douglas Rintoul 1001 Nights collects together some of the greatest folk tales ever told. Here they are re-imagined by Shahrazad – a lively young girl who, torn between her old home in the East and her new life in England, re-tells the extraordinary stories of her childhood to her new-found friend, who understands not a single word she says...

This compelling, funny and totally absorbing play made by Kent-based theatre company Transport, wowed audiences at the Unicorn theatre, London in 2013 and now is now back for a UK tour. Nominated for an Off West End Award - Best Production for Young People “An Utter Delight” ★★★★ The Telegraph

Using the things she finds around her, Shahrazad fashions saucepans into crowns, old pipes into enchanted telescopes and a mop into a magic carpet to transport us to a fantastical and imagined world of kings, viziers, and jinns.

The Tap Dancing Mermaid Thursday 29th May

It’s time to hear the Moon’s story, one you will NEVER forget... Gather round for the Moon’s magical story about a tippetty-top tap dancer who he has been watching at night. Marina Skippett creeps out of her house every night to shuffle and stomp on the boardwalk to the sounds of the sea. She can’t tap dance at home any more since her evil, tractor-sized Aunty banned it!

Following her sell-out UK tour performing in Niki McCretton’s Muttnik: The First Dog in Space, the “truly amazing one woman power house” Tessa Bide is returning in style with her first devised production. There are stunning puppets, original live music to sing along to and tap dancing that will make you want to stick 50ps to your shoes and join in!

But then, one moonlit night, Marina meets a mysterious, watery boy swimming in the sea and her life is never the same again!

Threnody for the Sky Children Wednesday 16th July

In a town in the middle of nowhere, in the attic of his parents’ house, a man convinced he was born with wings flees from the chaos outside and picks through his confused past. Threnody for the Sky Children is a surreal modern fable that draws inspiration from Ovid’s epic poem Metamorphoses, and fuses mythology and music with a hint of zombie apocalypse. Jack Dean is a writer and performer based in the South West who likes to take the hip hop medium he grew up with, goes out with it, gets it drunk and pushes it down the high street in a shopping trolley full of fireworks at 4am. “Funny, wise and beautifully performed” Exeunt “Artists like rap storyteller Jack Dean make us excited about what they’ll do next” Tom Morris in the Guardian. Through the centuries he has gathered all the tales in existence. All that is, except one.

Theatre Company as we meet ghosts, talking skulls, monsters, thieves, tricksters, dragons, and homing chickens in an adventure to find the last story on earth. Adapted from the book by legendary Liverpool poet Brian Patten, this really is a family show for old and young alike. The Story Giant is brought to you by Shanty, who were last seen at the Marine in 2012 with their hit production ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’.

Tonight his very life relies on finding it. Exploring folklore, myth and fairytale from around the world, join Shanty Friday 25th July - Sun 10th Aug and Thurs 21st Aug - Thurs 28th Aug Times: Tuesdays - Fridays: 7.30pm Saturdays and Sundays: 6.00pm Running time: 1hr 45mins (approx)

The Bo Diddlers Wednesday 13th August & Thursday 14th August

The Bo Diddlers are a Morris dance side who are taking the form into new unexplored realms. Using a blend of folk and contemporary dance, physical comedy, and live music the group creates a spectacle both mesmerising and hilarious. What first appears to be a traditional Morris dance side turns out to be something quite different… Led by Sidmouth-born Ewan Wardrop, whose critically acclaimed one-man show Formby was premiered at the Marine Theatre in 2012, The Bo Diddlers are made up of some of the country’s top professional dancers, who have performed with companies and artists including Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, Complicite, Lindsay Kemp and Mark Morris. This show was first developed at the Marine Theatre in 2013 as part of our R&D by the Sea programme. www.thebodiddlers.co.uk “I LOVE THIS. If you’re going to do ‘comedy morris’ at least be good at it. If you ever need a musician...” Jim Moray, BBC Radio 2 folk award winner Wednesday 13th August & Thursday 14th August Time: 8.00pm Running time: tbc Full Price: £12.00 Concessions: £9.00 Family tickets: £36.00 TheatreFriends discount available LYT members can come for £1!

Lyme Regis Folk Festival Friday 29th August Sunday 31st August

Following last year’s hugely successful inaugural year, Lyme Folk Weekend returns with another blockbuster programme featuring some of the country’s finest folk musicians. And once again the Marine Theatre takes centre stage as the focal point of the festival, welcoming a wonderful mix of legendary performers alongside some of the genre’s current crop of talent. The hugely talented line-up includes BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards nominee Martin Simpson and award-winning folk newcomer Lisa Knapp. To add more folk to folk, we are delighted to welcome back the sensational Mancunian trio Ducie, as well as Catherine Burke, the fabulous Blind Willies from San Francisco, and the hugely popular Patch & the Giant. With more brilliant acts to be announced, and the usual music, dancing, workshops, Morris parade and other activities, this year’s Lyme Folk Weekend looks certain to be another big hit! Friday 29th August – Sunday 31st August Keep an eye on www.lymefolk.com for details of times, tickets and prices.
