Last year we started a very exciting programme here at the Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis. It’s called R&D by the Sea. R&D by the Sea is the Marine Theatre’s nurturing programme for new and developing work. We all need space to think. Lyme Regis, set in the heart of England’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by 95 miles of truly stunning coastline with rocks recording 185 million years of the Earth’s history, has just that. It’s not often ideas come fully formed. We need time to delight, surprise, scare and confuse ourselves. To give ourselves fertile ground on which to develop. To invest in hours of research and then to forget all about it. This is where R&D by the Sea comes in. R&D by the Sea gives artists use of the theatre and its facilities, normally for a fiveday period, to develop their work. We’ve invited writers, actors, theatre makers and practitioners of all kinds to come to Lyme Regis. Unfold, unlock and explore a vision, a feeling, a thought. Draw from our landscape, history, communities and people. And at the end of their week-long stay, we’ve invited these artists to share what they’ve found. With you. We’re very excited to be welcoming two companies to Lyme Regis this autumn under the R&D by the Sea umbrella. Each sharing will be entirely different. It may last 10 minutes. It may last an hour. We can’t tell you much about them, as they haven’t been made yet. All we ask is that you come along with a warm heart and an open mind. You’ll get a chance to chat to the company afterwards and fill out a feedback form with your thoughts. We’d love to hear what you think. SHARING 1

Working in a building with a 118-year history can sometimes be a problem, and when that building is right next to the sea things can be even trickier. An extensive survey has revealed that in order to preserve the Marine, its two roofs are in desperate need of repair, with the pitch roof needing reinsulating, re-pitching and re-slating. Work to re-gutter, repair mortaring, paint the walls and treat the sea-facing timbers, along with the addition of solar panels, will add to the longevity and the economic and environmental sustainability of the theatre. The total cost of this work is estimated to be somewhere in the region of £95,000.

We’ve got a great history of fantastic performance here in Lyme. Whether it’s one of the local societies (who date back to the 1920s), Lyme Youth Theatre or one of the dozens of world famous acts that have appeared here over the years (including Jimmy Cagney, Michael McIntyre, Status Quo and Jo Brand) there has always been excellent, affordable nights out in Lyme. Unless we can fix the roof, that tradition is under threat. If you feel you’re able to make a contribution, however small, please visit www.marinetheatre.com. If you’d rather not donate online, please pop in to the theatre or send a cheque in the post made payable to LymeArts Community Trust. Any help is very, very gratefully received. Thank you.

The building has survived for generations through the support of the community. With your help we want to guarantee the people of Lyme Regis a theatre at the heart Tim, Harry, Nigel, Julia and all of the Marine of the Jurassic Coast for another 119 years. Theatre Team.

Afternoon Tea with Wendy Cope

Hayseed Dixie + support

Join Wendy Cope for an afternoon of poetry, tea and cucumber sandwiches, deliciously devised by local cafe Aroma.

Back at the Marine after their barn-stormingfoot-stamping-banjo-playing-sell-out visit in 2011, Hayseed Dixie have sold over half a million albums worldwide and played more than 1,000 live shows on every continent except Antarctica.

Saturday 20th September

A completely fresh and entertaining setting for a poetry reading from the quiet phenomenon who has proved quality can be popular, Wendy Cope is an award-winning poet, noted for her excellent wit and harmonious relationship between poetry and real life, and has been writing for 25 years. Her poems include the acclaimed ‘Bloody Men’ and ‘Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis’ and she was awarded a Michael Braude award for light verse (American Academy of Arts and Letters) and an OBE in 2010.

Saturday 20th September

Hayseed Dixie was formed in the summer of 2000 on the front porch of a cabin in the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee, when after drinking enough whiskey to float a battleship across the Sahara Desert, it became suddenly obvious to the boys that the “Lost Highway” of Hank Williams and the “Highway To Hell” of AC/DC were the same damned road.

This slightly seditious but seriously good ironic moan about life’s little irritations over a sarnie and a cuppa with Wendy has proved unfailingly popular. The afternoon will be rounded off with a question and answer session plus an after-show book signing.

Acknowledged as the creators of the musical genre “Rockgrass”, the band have released 10 albums containing both original songs and reinterpretations of previously known works, albeit in their own inimitable style.

The Women of World War One A tribute in words, music & images Friday 21st November Women of World War One is a powerful and moving portrait of women’s lives during The Great War, created by Musicians South West in collaboration with Petra Schofield/Magic Penny Productions. Poetry and prose on the subject of women’s experiences of this cataclysmic event are vividly illustrated with slides and with music for piano, stringed instruments and voice by female composers who were writing during the War. Factory workers, nurses, those in the Women’s Land Army, fiancées, wives, mothers and daughters tell their stories in their own words, through letters, diaries and poems. Their emotions are eloquently expressed in the music of their contemporaries: Rebecca Clarke, Melanie Bonis, Nadia and Lili Boulanger, and the recently rediscovered songwriter, Muriel Herbert. STAGE DOOR BAR

The Marine Theatre’s youth theatre LYT is aimed at children and young people between 5-21 who love the theatre and want to develop their creative skills. Lead by LYT’s professional tutors, actors and directors, our young ensemble take part in fun yet challenging classes, learning acting through drama, text, movement, voice work, character building and devising; all of which combine to enhance confidence and nurture creativity.

There’s plenty to talk about, confuse and amuse in the Stage Door Bar, all lovingly created by Wotzat Installations. To complement the incredible sea views across Lyme Bay we’ve got a great range of drinks too, with particular emphasis on locally sourced tipples at affordable prices.

LYT provides members with exclusive backstage access to a fully functioning professional theatre, enabling our ensemble to develop their skills whilst gaining an extensive understanding of all aspects of theatre life. As if that wasn’t enough, LYT members also take part in workshops with visiting theatre companies, regular classes, National Theatre Connections projects, and can come along to selected shows for just £1! Join LYT and be part of it... Want to know more? Then please call the Marine Theatre office on 01297 442394 or email lyt@marinetheatre.com.
