This year the theme of Lyme Regis Fossil Festival (marking its 10th Anniversary) is Mapping the Earth – celebrating the 200th Anniversary of William Smith’s ‘Map That Changed the World’ – the first ever geological map. A thing of beauty as well as a work of genius, there’ll be an original copy of the map in Lyme as well as lots of activities, exhibitions, music and theatre inspired by William ‘Strata’ Smith’s groundbreaking (literally!) work. Visit www.fossilfestival.com for more information.

We’ve got a programme we’re very excited about here at the Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis. It’s called R&D by the Sea. R&D by the Sea is the Marine Theatre’s nurturing programme for new and developing work. We all need space to think. Lyme Regis, set in the heart of England’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by 95 miles of truly stunning coastline with rocks recording 185 million years of the Earth’s history, has just that. It’s not often ideas come fully formed. We need time to delight, surprise, scare and confuse ourselves. To give ourselves fertile ground on which to develop. To invest in hours of research and then to forget all about it. This is where R&D by the Sea comes in. R&D by the Sea gives artists use of the theatre and its facilities, normally for

a 5-day period, to develop their work. We’ve invited writers, actors, theatre makers and practitioners of all kinds to come to Lyme Regis. Unfold, unlock and explore a vision, a feeling, a thought. Draw from our landscapes, history, communities and people. And at the end of their week-long stay, we’ve invited these artists to share what they’ve found. With you. This summer we welcome Tessa Bide to Lyme Regis under the R&D by the Sea umbrella. We can’t tell you much about her show, as it hasn’t been made yet. All we ask is that you come along with a warm heart and an open mind. In return, we’ll promise to give you an exclusive behind the scenes glance at what goes on in a rehearsal room. You’ll get a chance to chat to the company afterwards and fill out a feedback form with your thoughts. We’d love to hear what you think.

SHARING Tessa Bide - A work-in-progress sharing of her new family show for Christmas. In June. Thursday 18th to be precise, at 5pm. For more details see page 14. And that’s not all. We’re very excited to announce that this September R&D by the Sea will be relaunched, supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. We’ll be inviting more companies to Lyme Regis, and there’ll be plenty of new ways for you to sneak a peek at what’s going on behind the rehearsal room door. Keep an eye on www.marinetheatre. com for more details. If you’re an artist interested in applying for a place on the R&D by the Sea programme, please visit www.marinetheatre.com/rd-by-the-sea

Working in a building with a 118-year history can sometimes be a problem, and when that building is right next to the sea things can be even trickier. An extensive survey has revealed that in order to preserve the Marine, its two roofs are in desperate need of repair, with the pitch roof needing reinsulating, re-pitching and re-slating. Work to regutter, repair mortaring, paint the walls and treat the sea-facing timbers, along with the addition of solar panels, will add to the longevity and the economic and environmental sustainability of the theatre. The total cost of this work is estimated to be somewhere in the region of £95,000.

We’ve got a great history of fantastic performance here in Lyme. Whether it’s one of the local societies (who date back to the 1920s), Lyme Youth Theatre or one of the dozens of world famous acts that have appeared here over the years (including Jimmy Cagney, Michael McIntyre, Status Quo and Jo Brand) there has always been excellent, affordable nights out in Lyme. Unless we can fix the roof, that tradition is under threat. If you feel you’re able to make a contribution, however small, please visit www.marinetheatre.com. If you’d rather not donate online, please pop in to the theatre or send a cheque in the post made payable to LymeArts Community Trust. Any help is very, very gratefully received. Thank you.

The building has survived for generations through the support of the community. With your help we want Tim, Harry, Nigel, Julia and all of the Marine to guarantee the people of Lyme Regis a theatre at Theatre Team. the heart of the Jurassic Coast for another 119 years.

ASKING FOR IT

THURSDAY 2ND JULY PINCH’s latest work examines the phrase ‘asking for it’ through dance theatre, with a healthy dose of the ludicrous. From the street to the bedroom, squeezed between shame and fetishisation, female sexuality is policed and promoted in conflicting ways. In their latest work PINCH explore this territory in search of freedom, delving into the debate without agenda, in search of a way to simply be yourself. Performed with delicious humour, Asking For It celebrates the ridiculous and desperate in equal measure, capturing the paradoxes of using sex to gain empowerment. Decadent boozehound Luke Wright would love to spend his life flouncing around looking fabulous, but back in rural Suffolk he’s got the school run to do. Naval-gazing is all very well, but other people can be magic. Wright tells captivating stories in visceral verse from neglected corners of Britain. Meet the caneswinging, merlot-glugging “Bastard of Bungay”; spend half-term with lonely science teacher Mr Hooper; and cry “NOT IN MY NAME” with the irate villagers of Much Harpingon. By turns funny, poignant and political, this stayat-home dandy celebrates ordinary people having extraordinary moments, then sticks a “champagne-rinsed rococo boot” into the swines who run things. “One of our best young poets.” The Observer “Ripe for discovery and mass adulation.” The Mail on Sunday “Positively life-enhancing as well as hilarious.” The Evening Standard Also at Bridport Arts Centre. Fresh from their 5-star Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2014 debut, Bowjangles present On The Box! a witty and dynamic ‘TV’ stage show. Bowjangles are a string quartet who can really play. THE REMARKABLE JOURNEY BEFORE OF ASHLEY DAWN HUTCHINGS THE THE KATE BUSH TRIBUTE THURSDAY 13TH AUGUST

An evening in Ashley’s company is an opportunity to listen to him tell the stories behind the writings, add detail to the history of the bands he has created and describe some of the many projects he has brought to fruition. Join the Lord Chamberlain’s Men outside the Marine Theatre this summer for their open-air production of Shakespeare’s best-loved romantic comedy, Twelfth Night. A joyous tale of love, longing; laughter and mischief, mayhem and mistaken identity, set in fair Illyria. With identical twins separated by shipwreck, a cross-dressing heroine and everyone in search of love, Twelfth Night is one of the most famous and tangled love stories in literature.

Throw in the pompous steward Malvolio, two drunken lords, a grouchy fool and a practical joke that goes much too far and the stage is set for hilarity and chaos to reign! Could true love blossom amongst this madness? Will the twins be reunited? Can a man really look good in yellow stockings? “If music be the food of love, play on!” What better way to spend a glorious summer’s evening than watching this enormously funny, fast-paced production of Shakespeare’s much-loved comedy? Performed in Theatre Square, next door to the Marine, by an all-male cast in full Elizabethan costume, with traditional music and dance, this is undoubtedly one of the hottest tickets of the summer. Time: 6.30pm Running time: 2hrs 10mins (apprx) Full Price: £14.50 Under 16s: £8.50 Family (2 adults, 2 concs or 1 adult 3 concs): £38.00

LOS PACAMINOS FRIDAY 28TH AUGUST

Led by Paul Young, Los Pacaminos are an Americana group from London who play music from the heart. Originally formed as an opportunity to play their shared passion of the Border, Tex-Mex and Americana music that the members of the band love, they started as a practice band playing when other musical commitments allowed - top musicians just playing for fun. Word got around as word does and soon the band started playing gigs. Paul is not the only luminary in this seven piece band. Some of the best musicians in the business have teamed up to present an incendiary mix of classics and original material. Paul says “Los Pacaminos started out just for fun, playing simply for the pleasure of it, and it just took off from there. What’s really nice is that everyone else in the band can sing too, and they do, all in their own different styles. It’s real bar room stuff, foot stompers, not too many slow songs - a real party atmosphere.” Doors: 7.15pm Onstage: 8.00pm Full Price: £14.50 Concessions: £13.50 TheatreFriends discount available
