Mission

The Montessori Academy is true to the teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori. We create an environment that cultivates the child's intellect, instills responsibility, fosters respect, and inspires care for the community.

The Case for Montessori

The Montessori Academy has a progressive educational program with an approach dedicated to promoting self-worth, selfdiscipline, and a passion for learning. Our students enjoy and benefit from timeproven ideas and practices that value individuality and address the academic, social-emotional, and physical development of the whole child.

from the President of the Board of Trustees

Dear TMA Community,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for your dedication, support and enthusiasm to provide excellent Montessori education to our students and instill a love for life time learning. First, the staff here at TMA are the backbone and life blood to this school and all of its successes. Continually, I am impressed with their professional and personal commitment to each individual student at TMA and their willingness to work tirelessly to ensure each student has what they need to succeed. In addition, our parents/caregiver engagement with their children is inspiring. The Board of Trustees looks forward to hearing more about your ideas and suggestions for new ways of improving our school and its community. I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to Jen LaPrad, the Past President of the Board for her exceptional leadership

This past year was particularly exciting as the school was able re-engage in many events and activities that were put on hold during COVID. Our community ran, walked and cheered at the annual Fall Frolic race in October, which raised significant funds for the Montessori Classroom at the Center for the Homeless. This classroom served 14 students this past year at no cost to these children’s families who are guests of the Center. In addition, our 8th years were able to return to weekly visits to the Center for the first time since COVID as part of their community engagement, a cornerstone of Montessori education. Finally, we were able to make key investments in the school’s physical infrastructure and safety for our students due to the generosity of our community members.

This year is already underway and the excitement from the students and staff is palpable. Planning for Fall Frolic and Windfall has begun in earnest and we look forward to your participation and support for these events.

Finally, thank you to Randy for his leadership at school and commitment to the wellbeing of the students Here is to another great year!

Dear TMA Families,

On behalf of the entire faculty and staff of The Montessori Academy, thank you for your partnership and support in making the 2022-2023 school year another successful one for our students. In this annual report, you will see just how important your partnership is, and some of the many reasons our school is so unique and vital.

The list of donors highlighted in this report includes our community members who give, not just financially, but also of their valuable time. You will see the many businesses that support TMA. And please take note of how many teachers and staff members, who are so committed to our students everyday, also donate their hard earned dollars to support their school. I can't think of a more gratifying vote of confidence.

I'd also like to thank the Board of Trustees for their stewardship and guidance. Each member of the Board gives of their time, their talents and through generous donations, while also providing valuable oversight. Heartfelt gratitude goes to Jen LaPrad, immediate Past President of the Board of Trustees whose term coincides with this annual report, and who led the Board with a gracious and steady hand.

As we look forward to a new school year, I want to again thank you for your past support, and humbly ask that you continue your commitment to TMA, as we continue to honor our commitment to you.

Sincerely,

Our Diversity is our Strength

In the 2022-2023 school year, Parents of TMA's student body originated from more than 30 countries. Our rich cultural environment leads to deep interpersonal learning and develops leaders capable of understanding and compassion.

At the same time we are working to increase staff and teacher salaries and improve our facilities and programming, we have not raised tuition rates in our Elementary and Junior High for more than six years. To make all that possible, we rely on the generosity of our community.

Best Practices

TMA was the first dually-accredited school in our region, and one of the first anywhere, earning that distinction 20 years ago from the American Montessori Society and the Independent Schools Association of the Central States. We choose to continue that rigorous process in order to hold ourselves accountable to the highest standards of Montessori and Independent schools nationwide.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY

At the end of June 2023, The Montessori Academy had total assets of $2,216,904 with an endowment of just over $94,000 held by the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County. As is the case for most independent schools, tuition remains the largest source of income, accounting for over 80%, while personnel costs constitute the majority of TMA's expenses.

To continue to enhance our programming and facilities, and attract and retain the most qualified and talented faculty and staff, each year we rely on the generosity of our community to make up the difference between our tuition revenue and the cost of running the school. Through our Annual Fund drive, SGO, our Windfall Gala and other events and giving initiatives, there are several ways you can contribute to TMA, to help us maintain the standard of excellence you ' ve come to expect.

Please consider making a tax deductible donation to support our academic programming and our exceptional teachers and staff. A donation to our Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) also allows Indiana residents and businesses to receive a 50% State tax credit.

A BRIEF HISTORY

And Long Range Planning

In 1980, after eleven years in several different locations, TMA's Early Childhood building on Day Road was dedicated by the Reverend Theodore Hesburgh, President of the University of Notre Dame. This new location was thanks to a gift of property by Pat and Don Cressy and the fundraising efforts of several founding families. Then in 1989, the Main Building was dedicated and in 1998, the gymnasium wing was added.

The picture below is one of the original campus plans The goal has always been to eventually connect the buildings and add more dedicated classroom space As we look to the future, we will determine the viability of taking on a Capital Campaign initiative to further expand our campus.
