Employees receive fair wages

Our partners teach artisan groups to calculate their prices to ensure employees receive fair wages for their work, whether that is a daily wage or piece rate system. In addition to serving leprosy affected people, we also work with artisans disadvantaged by their social status or physical/mental disability. Artisan products are highlighted throughout the catalogue by a red handprint.

NEW The art of Indian block printing A labour-intensive process which flourished in the 12th century. Using specially carved wooden blocks, the printer dips the block into dye, presses it onto the fabric and then slams the back of the block hard with her fist to create a clear impression. Each piece is treated to bring out the colour and fix the dyes. After drying in the sun, the cloth is rolled in newspaper and steamed, then washed, dried in the sun again, and finally ironed. Now you know the history behind these beautiful pieces you can become a part of the story by buying them and helping sustain the livelihood of these hard working artisans.

Welcome to our

Summer Catalogue Dear Friend,

From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the LORD is to be praised. Psalm 113v3 (NIV)

It is truly wonderful how the longer, lighter days can lift our spirits and give us the impression of having more time. More time for recreation - if you enjoy reading, please take a look at our stimulating and inspiring selection of Summer books (p18-37). More time to enjoy God’s beautiful creation - we hope that our summer living section will enhance your enjoyment (p13-17). More time to spend with family and friends - you could also connect in a meaningful way with people affected by leprosy by buying a handcrafted artisan product (look out for the handprints) or a Gift for Life (p26-27). We praise God and give thanks for the difference your support makes to their lives. With every blessing,

Who we are...

Read below to see how this can really change lives.

Bhagwati Poudel has worked at Nepal Leprosy Trust (NLT) for 26 years and is a valued, senior member of the team. She explains how NLT helped her family when her husband’s leprosy caused financial hardship. When Bhagwati (aged 17), married Krishna Poudel in 1974, he was employed in the government Telecom offices. However, his family had hidden his illness. Bhagwati noticed his clawed fingers, a sign of nerve damage caused by untreated leprosy, but was told it was due to hard agricultural work. Due to frequent illness Krishna had to leave his job and the family struggled to survive without his income. In 1977, when her eldest daughter was just two, Bhagwati started weaving carpets to support her family. Krishna finally received the treatment he needed in 1981, at TLM Anandaban Leprosy Hospital and afterwards was offered a job at Nepal Leprosy Trust (NLT) in 1983. The family was desperately poor and Krishna was physically weak but wanted to work. He was employed in the leather workshop for six years until his poor health prevented him from continuing. Not wanting his family to suffer, NLT offered his job to Bhagwati. She took over from her husband in 1987 and is now honoured as a senior NLT worker, skilled in any area of leather work. Bhagwati has expressed her happiness and thanks for the NLT project and credits it with providing her family with a better life. Today, all of her children are well educated and working, and one of her daughters is a doctor. Sadly, Krishna suffered a brain hemorrhage six years ago and underwent surgery which left him half paralyzed. NLT provides her with a good livelihood and has given her hope, financial security and self-dignity for which she is grateful.

Thank you for saving Manju’s eyesight

Help restore independence, hope and dignity

See page 26-27 for more Gifts for Life

It’s nothing short of a miracle how Manju Roy still has the gift of sight. The mum-of-five first showed signs of leprosy soon after her marriage, aged 14. There is real stigma surrounding leprosy in her home city of Kolkata and Manju did not seek treatment for the disease when she first noticed light patches on her skin. Manju’s fears became real as on discovering she had leprosy, her husband asked her to leave home. Her right leg had to be amputated following terrible ulcers and her remaining leg became infected. She suffered nerve damage in both of her hands. Leprosy caused the muscles in Manju’s face to weaken and for more than 10 years she was unable to close her eyes. Despite her eyes becoming injured as they were no longer naturally protected by blinking, by the grace of God, Manju did not go blind. She arrived at The Leprosy Mission’s Premananda Hospital in Kolkata complaining of blurred vision. She was immediately given eye surgery in both eyes. Manju will never have perfect vision, but the operation has saved her remaining sight. She is immensely grateful. This wonderful outcome is all thanks to The Leprosy Mission’s donors – people like you. It costs just £35 for surgery to protect the priceless gift of sight in leprosy-damaged eyes.

£3500 Cover the costs of a hospital bed for one year, including staff salaries and medicines, and bring healing and care to dozens of people.

Thanks to your support, TLM community workers teach leprosy affected people to prosper and earn the respect of their neighbours through microfinance schemes. Microfinance is most effective when managed by a self-help group. Beneficiaries are chosen by the leaders, and are encouraged to repay by other members. All repaid funds and interest is held by the group and in turn funds the next member in need. Ushanu Marma, pictured left, is a self-help group founder member in the Chittagong Hill tracks, Bangladesh. In December 2010, a TLM community worker encouraged her and another leprosy affected lady to form a self-help group with 8 neighbours. The group has united them in friendship and encouraged them to invest in their future. Before, they would spend any spare money on a monthly trip to a tea shop, now they save their money and meet monthly to share issues and help each other find solutions. In 2012 the group qualified for a grant from TLM and five members took loans. Three funded their farming activities growing turmeric, ginger and bananas. One expanded her small shop and the last one, who received food preparation training, started a small business selling fast food. The group has saved to date is 14846 Tk (£115), with which they are very pleased.
