The Rainbow Children’s Home in Andhra Pradesh, India, is a haven for children affected by the stigma of leprosy. In former times, these children would probably have been excluded from school and left to beg and roam the streets, but Brighter Future, who run the children’s home with support from The Leprosy Mission, believe that every child has a right to education.
They provide the youngsters with nourishing meals, clothing, welfare, and medical support. They also ensure that each child has a place in a primary or secondary school and provide them with everything they need to do well in their studies.
During the peak of COVID, when schools and colleges were closed, Brighter Future even provided laptops, mobile phones and smart TVs to enable the children to attend online classes. The children also love books and reading and are very keen to learn. They are always delighted to receive new schoolbooks - thank you for your support and generosity.
These bright lads from the Rainbow Children’s Home really value their education. This gift provides a uniform, shoes, and school materials for two children affected by leprosy, giving them access to an education and bright hope for the future.

16-year-old Shreya had to stop going to school when she was only ten. Her classmates told her she had ugly hands and everyone was so afraid of catching leprosy that she had to leave school. The school didn’t understand that leprosy can be treated and cured. Sadly, that same year both her parents died and she is now looked after by neighbours and relations.
Shreya’s leprosy was originally detected during a local screening campaign and then her village kindly collected money so she could travel to Anandaban Hospital in Nepal for treatment. She has now been there for 4 months and has recently had an operation to straighten the fingers on her right hand. Happily, she’s already had a successful operation on her left hand. Soon she’ll be able to hold a pen, a hairbrush or a knife and fork again. She’s looking forward to being able to use her hands for normal daily activities once more.
Leprosy affects the nerves leading to clawed fingers. This gift pays for someone like Shreya to have life-transforming hand surgery, straightening fingers and restoring movement.

Kaveri’s grandma is affected by leprosy. Some patches on her skin, then she was diagnosed with leprosy at the hospital and treated with Multidrug Therapy. Sadly, she keeps getting recurring ulcers and needs ongoing support. Meesala’s husband has died, so she is especially pleased to have her granddaughter Kaveri’s help.
Young Kaveri is really supportive, she helps apply her grandma’s ointment, fastens her shoes, does a little housework and fetches fresh water for her. Her grandma has also been affected by loss of feeling and the fingers on her right hand are disfigured making daily tasks difficult.
Nowadays, Grandma Meesala hardly ever leaves the house. She doesn’t go to social gatherings in the community, but sometimes she likes to visit family so she can make sure her other grandchildren are keeping out of mischief! She is always happy when Kaveri accompanies her to make sure she’s OK.
Kaveri doesn’t want people like her grandma to suffer from leprosy. With your help, £24 can find and cure someone of this stubborn disease. And if the symptoms are spotted early, there will be no long-term damage.
