Kristina lives life to the fullest knowing her leprosy has been cured Trained by The Leprosy Mission, the volunteer also had gone house to house checking his fellow villagers for symptoms of the disease. By the grace of God, Kristina heard her neighbour talk about a volunteer in a nearby village who had staged a community drama about leprosy, a memorable way of teaching those who cannot read or write.

Kristina’s neighbour told her the traditional healer’s advice wouldn’t work and instead she should go and find the volunteer who could help her. The volunteer welcomed Kristina and treated her kindly. He told her that she should see Gabriel, the community health worker, who had received training from The Leprosy Mission. He would be able to give her a diagnosis and the cure.

Gabriel’s skills are invaluable in the fight against leprosy

Gabriel’s job sees him cover a vast area of northern Mozambique. He rides his motorbike along dirt tracks to reach the most remote villages.

When he finds someone like Kristina with symptoms, he undertakes a thorough assessment.

ristina can be found each day working the land in her remote Mozambican village. She grows maize, peanuts and a root vegetable called cassava. If the weather is kind, she can put food on the table and make a living selling her produce at a local market.

Recently, however, Kristina has struggled. First she noticed white patches on her hands. She then developed open wounds on her fingers that would not heal. She worried they would become infected by working in the fields.

There is no doctor or health clinic in Kristina’s community. So she sought the advice of a traditional healer who told her to take a special bath. It didn’t work and the ulcers on her hands only got worse.

He checks for patches, loss of sensation, and inflamed nerves. Gabriel diagnosed Kristina with leprosy and gave her Multidrug therapy, the cure.

He cleaned the wounds on her hands and taught her techniques to prevent further injury while working in the fields.

Crucially Gabriel put Kristina’s mind at rest. Thanks to Gabriel’s expertise and dedication, Kristina is now able to live her life to the fullest. Knowing that her leprosy has been cured she’s able to continue

Will you help train a Leprosy Changemaker and make leprosy a disease of the past?

Zaina was able to take back her future into her own hands and is now a thriving member of her community. Determined others shouldn’t have to suffer a similar fate, Zaina has trained as a Leprosy Changemaker herself. She is able to recognise the early signs of leprosy and has made it her mission to encourage others to ‘take the cure and carry on living’.

“ I say to someone with leprosy that they should take care of themselves,” she said.

aina’s life was turned around by the kindness of a stranger who showed her God’s unconditional love. Forever grateful, Zaina’s love for others walking the same path knows no bounds. She goes the extra mile to find those who are hidden away and fearful so that they too have the freedom of a new life.

Zaina was a young mum when she first noticed discoloured patches on her skin. She didn’t know what they were, but when they became visible to other people in her home village of Namatua, they recognised the signs of leprosy. Because of age-old myths surrounding disease, some of the villagers ridiculed Zaina. Eventually they banished her to the forest, chanting “go to the bush” over and over.

Together with her young son, Zaina was forced to live in the forest. If that wasn’t hard enough, a group of villagers came to take her little boy away. Zaina was heartbroken. Hungry and without medicine, her body became increasingly weak.

By the grace of God a stranger found Zaina in the forest. He built her a hut to shelter from the rain and took her to a health post where her leprosy was cured.

Leprosy Changemakers, community volunteers trained by The Leprosy Mission, were able to go to Namatua and teach the villagers about leprosy and how it is easily cured.

There are thousands of cases of undiagnosed leprosy in Mozambique today. People like Zaina who are unable to shine because of the stigma surrounding leprosy. People with leprosy deserve the chance to be cured and be valued members of their community.

Leprosy need not exist today. It only exists because of a lack of medical care, fear and ignorance. Everyone deserves a future free from leprosy – and this is entirely possible.

We have the cure and a way of making sure all those who need it can be reached. We are training members of the community to become Leprosy Changemakers. People with leprosy can be signposted to treatment before they needlessly develop disabilities. Will you help train a Leprosy Changemaker and make leprosy a disease of the past?
