professional and amateur events than any other course in New Zealand, and was again the host of the NZ Amateur Championship in 2015.

History Titirangi Golf Club can trace its formation back to 1909.

It began life at a different location – at One Tree Hill – and under another name – Maungakiekie Golf Club.

The Club was the third to be formed in Auckland, originally taking over the site vacated by Auckland Golf Club, who not long before had departed to a new home at the Middlemore course in Otahuhu.

Initially, only nine holes were open for play, but with the lease of nearby land it was not long before members were able to enjoy an 18-hole layout.

This stay, though, was to be short-lived. One Tree Hill was public open space and with uncertainty over the security of their tenure going forward, members yearned for a home they could truly call their own and so the search was on for a new site.

It did not take long to locate. Land at New Lynn seemed perfect, with a 130-acre site not only a wonderful location for a course, but with excellent public transport links, an important consideration in times when cars were a luxury rather than the vehicle of the common man.

Plans were put on hold until the cessation of the First World War, but in 1919 two local professionals – FG Hood and Gilbert Martin – were engaged to undertake a permanent layout of the course, some preparatory work having already been undertaken. The New Lynn course was formally opened on 29 May 1920.

The Club continued to operate with two courses on two sites and rapidly grew at that time to be the largest in New Zealand.

This brought with it some problems and, concerned about course congestion, the forward-thinking committee of the day began seeking a golf course architect knowledgeable and sympathetic enough to effect changes they both desired and needed.

It took several years to find him, but the wait was worthwhile. Enter Dr. Alister MacKenzie, born in Yorkshire to Scottish parents, a man who had made his name designing courses both in his homeland and overseas.

He was on this side of the world overseeing a major redevelopment project at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, but through cable correspondence let it be known that he would indeed be interested in working his magic at Titirangi.

MacKenzie arrived in Auckland from Sydney on the passenger ship Marama on 4 January 1927 – and promptly went fishing!

Rejuvenated by this recreational time he duly got to work and it was a measure of his genius that it took less than a week following his return to analyse thoroughly the New Lynn golf links, assess its features and produce a full plan of the course and detailed diagrams of nine greens to be revamped.

In so doing MacKenzie at a stroke resolved all the issues that had dogged the Club since its inception, addressing the committee’s desire for a second starting place near the clubhouse and embracing the magnificent local features to come up with a masterplan that must have left the committee of the day drooling!

MacKenzie departed New Zealand, never to return. He never saw his work completed, though that mattered not to the Club’s forefathers, who now had a very clear and exciting direction for the future and one on which they were anxious to embark.

Bert Cooke was entrusted with the work, and an outstanding job he did. Between March 1927 and October 1928 he supervised and implemented the MacKenzie design to the letter.

It was a mammoth task. Only five of the existing greens were retained and new fairways were formed on nine holes.

The new course was officially opened by President Lawrence Taylor on 22 October 1928. Cooke was awarded honorary life membership for his significant contribution and the Club swiftly received its own accolades, being awarded the 1933 New Zealand Open Championship.

Incredibly, two courses were still in operation under the same Maungakiekie Golf Club banner right up until 1930. It was then that ties were severed, and two clubs were formed. The original club at One Tree Hill became

Maungakiekie Golf Club, with the new site relinquishing that name and becoming Titirangi Golf Club.

Sadly, little more than a decade later Maungakiekie was requested to leave the site in 1942 when its lease expired.

Titirangi, by contrast, prospered. Having hosted one NZ Open, two others followed in 1951 and 1966 and a number of other tournaments confirmed not only the course as a layout of championship standard, but underlined the high regard in which it was held.

Exhibition matches, especially from professionals, were popular for a number of years, particularly early in the life of the course. Among the greats to have graced Titirangi are the legendary American players Walter Hagen (11 Major championships) and Gene Sarazen (a mere seven, but unlike Hagen one of five golfers to have won all four Majors). The South African Bobby Locke also visited several times and described Titirangi as New Zealand’s best course.

This, though, was only the precursor to the golden years that were to lie ahead as the Club became the country’s foremost tournament venue.

LET’S TALK SOLVING BUSINESS CHALLENGES THROUGH GREAT DESIGN

From 1976 to 1992 Titirangi played host to a series of high-profile tournaments – most notably the Air New Zealand-Shell Open – that drew some of the world’s great golfing names.

Over this time the Club hosted the great Arnold Palmer, along with David Graham, Billy Casper, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Sandy Lyle, Ian Baker-Finch and the then current US Open champion Andy North.

Many other household names also discovered Links Road, with in all 19 winners of major championships taking part in these events.

These tournaments attracted thousands of spectators and even larger TV audiences. If Titirangi was an undiscovered gem prior to this time, it was now most certainly on the golfing map.

And there it intends to stay. The Club enlisted the services of one of the leading course architects of modern times, Chris Pitman, in the late 1990s. A disciple of the principles of MacKenzie, he drew up a masterplan to return the course to its halcyon days.

It was no small task. At a cost of almost $5million

it reflected the importance of what was essentially Titirangi’s crown jewel – the course – its place in the history of golf in New Zealand and the necessity of preserving it for future generations as a reminder of just how good golf course design could be. The results, we hope, speak for themselves.

2016 saw the Club needing to engage the services of a new course architect trained and versed in the MacKenzie principles and doctrines as it needed to address safety concerns on the boundaries of two holes and to complete the restoration of the remaining two holes that had not been performed.

Clyde Johnson, a young course designer based at St Andrews in Scotland, who did his internship under Tom Doak, was recommended. He was commissioned by the Club to not only look at the four holes mentioned above but to review all Titirangi’s holes to see if any improvements were needed or changes made to ensure our MacKenzie design was being upheld.

Those further developments and recommendations will take shape over the next few years.

The Course Titirangi’s majestic course is up there with the very best this country can offer. Every reputable ranking publication has Titirangi as the leading course in Auckland and all rank us as a marquee course in New Zealand’s Top 10.

A golfing challenge for the purist, it is also a piece of living history (some would say a work of art) and a testament to the skill of Alister MacKenzie.

MacKenzie also has on his résumé such masterpieces as Augusta National and Cypress Point in the United States and Royal Melbourne in Australia. Titirangi, though, is the only example of his inspirational work this side of the Tasman Sea. “A good golf course grows on one like a good painting, good music, or any other artistic creation,” MacKenzie once said. “It is not necessarily a course which appeals the first time one plays over it, but one that grows on the player the more frequently he visits it.”

The course stretches to 6,016 metres from the Black Championship Tees, playing to a par of 70 with two par-3s and one par-5 on both the outward nine and coming home.

Short, perhaps, by modern standards, but don’t drop your guard: this is a true golfing test and one that enables the golfer to enjoy playing the game as its forefathers intended all those years ago.

A New Zealand Golf Course Rating of 72.0, two shots above par, is merely a cursory indication of

what lies in store. The governing body of golf in this country do not as yet mark a course for aesthetic pleasure, exhilaration factor, historical significance or cunningness in design. Were they to, then Titirangi would likely be off the scale!

Four other tee placements on each hole – Blue, White, Yellow and Red – give golfers of all abilities the opportunity to enjoy Titirangi without feeling that the challenge is unfair, another of MacKenzie’s guiding principles.

With browntop fairways and greens set on sand, the course is as enjoyable to walk as it is to play. The putting greens are one of the many outstanding features and proof positive that Poa annua grass if nurtured and cared for can make for the best quality putting surfaces imaginable.

Each will have their own favourite hole, though it is almost beyond argument that Titirangi has one of the strongest sets of par-3s in New Zealand, each playing in a different direction to the last. Australian golfer Peter Thomson considered the 187-metre 14th to be one of Dr. MacKenzie’s greatest holes. Who are we to argue with a five-time Open champion?

“The key elements to any Alister MacKenzie golf course is that the golfer is going to be constantly challenged each time they play in that no two days are ever alike,” says Titirangi’s Director of Golf, Doug White.

“That’s a combination of the course set-up, the wind, obviously where the golfer hits it off the tee, and whether they hit it on the green.”

Doug adds: “There’s never a hole where you can stand up there and basically freewheel your way through, you’ve always got to be alert. That’s the beauty of good architecture: each time you play it’s going to feel different and you will feel you have learnt something new.

“To play the course well you need to put your drive in a position that will allow you to get to the respective flag on the green. The fairways are actually fairly generous, so it’s not overly tight, but the way the course is set up, you’re basically asked to hit toward a certain side of the fairway to give yourself a chance of getting it close to the flag.

“Secondary to that, the real art to the golf course is around the greens. The way it’s bunkered is quite intimidating, but it’s not too difficult a shot once you actually execute it. It’s quite clever in that respect.

What I mean by that is that some of the bunkers are quite big and quite imposing when they’re staring at you, but actually once you get yourself up on to the green and look back it never seems as difficult a shot as what you first thought.”

“A player can have a six-foot putt on each hole all day long and essentially have to putt defensively because of where that six-foot putt is coming from – whether it’s downhill or sidehill – as opposed to if it’s on the other side of the hole when they can putt quite aggressively.

“At the same time there’s enough out there for the novice golfer that they can get a lot of reward or excitement over some of the shots they are asked to hit, hitting over gullies and ravines, and some of the putts they are asked to hit with the undulations.

“When you’re looking at people’s scores when they hand them in, nobody ever seems to get on a run where they master the course. Some clubs you will see a guy and he will have 10 rounds in a row where he is playing exceptional golf. You seldom see that here at Titirangi.

“Every golfer of all levels is going to come away with something they are pleased about.”

“For example, if you hit a tee shot in the wrong spot then you’re scrambling because you then have to hit such an exact shot for your next one and if you don’t pull it off the chip shot needs to be spot on and the putt needs to be spot on. You can get yourself out of position ever so slightly and make a bogey, it happens just like that.

The old course record of 62 was set by Irish professional Eamonn Darcy at the 1980 Air New Zealand-Shell Golf Open. The new course record is currently 64 set by a young amateur at the 2009 NZ Strokeplay Championship.

Equally impressive was a Titirangi member scoring an albatross two at the fiendish par-5 13th hole fondly referred to as “The Wrecker”.

Neither of these feats are likely to be matched, but if you’re up for a challenge you’re very welcome to try!

Tour the Course We hope you enjoy your time with us at Titirangi Golf Club. Here, Director of Golf Doug White offers a few useful tips and course notes which should help you make the most of your round if you have never visited our Alister MacKenzie designed course before.

Distances shown are from the Black Championship Tees.

Every tee is featured with a marcocarpa block as a seat with hole name and yardage on with a quote by famous golfers and Dr Alister MacKenzie himself.

All tee markers are cut from native manuka found extensively throughout the course.

Hole 1, 282 metres, par 4 – “First” A generous fairway to greet the opening shot of your round with a tee shot over a gully. The ideal line is down the right-hand side over the fairway bunker as this allows the golfer to have the best angle into the green. The player who goes left is faced with a more difficult approach over greenside bunkers. Beware of back-left pin placement as players can be caught out by the speed of the green.

“Titirangi was exceptionally well adapted for golf, undulating, without being hilly” Dr. Alister MacKenzie Hole 2, 313 metres, par 4 – “Crossing” Pay particular attention to the pin placement. If the pin is on the right the golfer needs to drive as close as possible to the fairway bunker on the left. In some cases they could actually be in the fairway bunker and be okay. If the pin placement is left they need to drive down the centre or to the right to allow them an angle in. The green is guarded by a pine tree at the front which is why such precision is required on the tee shot. Around the green the player needs to be aware not to miss long or right, otherwise they will be faced with a delicate up and down.

“While always keeping uppermost the provision of a splendid test of golf, I have striven to achieve beauty” Dr Alister MacKenzie Hole 3, 389 metres, par 4 – “Cookes” Probably the hardest par 4 on the golf course, it plays slightly uphill from tee to green. The tee shot needs to be hit over the first fairway bunker on the left and this will give a more level lie to an island-type green perched above a gully. The second shot needs to be precise to hold the green, which is one of the smallest and most severe on the golf course. Only quality shots here will result in a par.

“Never throw the club or make a hit with it; swing it all the way” Harry Vardon Hole 4, 169 metres, par 3 – “The Pitch” Downhill par 3 that plays one club less than the yardage suggests. The wind can be very tricky here.

The best gauge is the flag on the 11th hole (in the distance to the right), if you can see it! A ball missing the green will require a deft touch to save par. The key thing to this hole is getting the yardage right.

Hole 5, 478metres, par 5 – “Longfellow”

Hole 6, 387 metres, par 4 – “Terraces”

Hole 8, 306 metres, par 4 – “Island”

Hole 10, 357metres, par 4 – “The Turn”

The first of two par 5s on the golf course. If you’re able to, your tee shot should carry the right-hand bunker, those that can’t need to play left of it. The longer hitter who can hit the green in two needs to pay particular attention to where the flag is. The better miss is left of the green. For the player who is intending to lay up, you have to traverse two fairway bunkers at about 135 metres out, favouring the left side will offer the best approach into all pin placements. One of the flattest greens on the course, but don’t take it for granted.

A slightly blind tee shot over a hill, use the power pylon in the distance as your target. A steep gully awaits a long tee shot so chose your club wisely. Your second shot plays considerably uphill, so allow one extra club. A back pin placement on this hole is one of the hardest to get the ball close to as the green runs away from the player.

The ideal tee shot is on the left-hand plateau as close to the water hazard as possible as this will offer the flattest lie and gives the golfer the best angles to each pin placement. An approach to the left of the pin will offer a putt uphill. On windy days this can be one of the fastest greens on the course.

A fairly wide fairway greets. If the hole is played into the wind, a shorter tee shot will give a level lie, albeit with the prospect of having to hit a longer club into the green.

Longer tee shots will likely leave a trickier approach shot off an upslope into the prevailing wind. Particular attention needs to be paid to where the pin is, ensuring that you keep the ball beneath the hole.

Hole 7, 183 metres, par 3 – “Pavilion”

Hole 9, 403 metres, par 4 – “Midway”

Another gem of a par 3 with three separate levels to the green. If at any stage the golfer is above the hole they will struggle to two-putt for their par, so the best miss here is short.

Keep your tee shot on the left half of the fairway as this will open up the green for the second shot and will ensure the trees down the right-hand side do not come into play. If the golfer cannot reach the green in two, then short and left is the best lay up. A solid iron shot will result in a birdie or par chance.

Hole 11, 161 metres, par 3 – “Redan”

Hole 13, 467metres, par 5 – “Wrecker”

For the shorter hitters play towards Old Man’s Corner as they call it. There is an area to the right golfers can play to which opens up the green and gives the best chip shot up the green to all pin placements. If you dare to go for the flag, make sure you have enough club as a shot to a left pin placement plays half a club longer than to a right-hand pin.

Aptly named Wrecker, primarily because there is a tree in the centre of the fairway over a little gully around the 135-metre mark from the green, so a golfer’s course management needs to be very good here to avoid the tree. For the lay-up, the player needs to get the ball on the left side of the fairway and as far down as possible to allow them to hit a third shot up the line of the green. Favour the right side with the approach as the putting surface slopes from right to left and keep the ball below the pin to leave an easier putt.

“All natural beauty should be preserved, natural hazards should be utilised and artificiality should be minimised” Dr Alister MacKenzie Hole 12, 415 metres, par 4 – Titirangi” This is arguably the prettiest hole on the course, but don’t be distracted as is the first of three holes that would be considered by Titirangi members to be their ‘Amen Corner’. Although only a par-4 it’s a three-shot hole for the higher handicappers which is best played by taking out the fairway bunker about 80 metres short of the green. The better player can drive it into the gully roughly 220 metres off the tee and this will leave them a mid to long iron into a narrow but long green. It takes two good shots to find the putting surface here in regulation and par is certainly a good score.

“Take time to smell the flowers along the way” Walter Hagen Hole 14, 187 metres, par 3 – “Ramparts” The final challenge of ‘Amen Corner’ conjures up a great par 3 over a ravine, with native bush on both sides making the shot seem a lot harder than it actually is. There are five particular zones on the green. If a player can land the ball on their target zone a relatively easy birdie putt awaits, if you miss your zone your putting or short game skills will be put to the test.

Hole 15, 372 metres, par 4 – “Temptation”

Hole 17, 425 metres, par 4 – “Highway”

The tee shot is over a ravine and its degree of difficulty depends on how much of this ravine the player wishes to take on. Once this has been traversed the second shot pays slightly downhill to a two-tiered green, with the front tier being higher. An approach hit to the centre of the green will feed down to a pin placement at the back. If the pin is on the upper tier, check your yardage carefully to the front of the green.

A partially blind tee shot which needs to be worked slightly left to right if playing off the back tees. A ball missing the fairway left or right will leave trees to navigate. The second shot plays slightly downhill and any ball short will generally tend to roll towards the front of the green. There is not much trouble around the green, so the best place to miss is right, as this offers the easiest up and down.

Hole 16, 384 metres, par 4 – “Assouan” Another tee shot over native bush to a wide fairway with natural undulations. The golfer is faced with a second shot to a shallow green with a gully in front, so precision is required to hit the putting surface, let alone get the ball close. Going long is out of bounds, so even though short is far from ideal it is the preferred miss!

Hole 18, 338 metres, par 4 – “Sunset” The final test of an invigorating round. Attention again needs to be paid to the pin placement, but in general a drive that finishes as close to the first fairway bunker will offer a good angle for any approach. A two-putt par would be a very satisfying way to close out the round, but don’t drop your guard when on the green as there are some subtle undulations.

Members’ Lounge and Catering

The clubhouse experience at Titirangi is something to be savoured in the same way as the course itself.

The Members’ Lounge at Titirangi offers members and guests a home from home, a place where they can retreat after a day’s golf and relax in comfort, chat with friends over a relaxing drink, enjoy a coffee before going out on the course or grab a bite to eat.

The latest clubhouse was built in 1986, being formally opened by esteemed Club member Rex George who had been present as a 30-year-old when the previous clubhouse had been opened in 1921.

The committee would presumably have had the odd sleepless night or two when they learnt of the final cost – a princely £5,620 against their original estimate of £2,000!

Costing around $1.6million, this building represented a significant stake in the Club’s future, and an acknowledgement from the committee of the day that to retain its position as one of the pre-eminent golf clubs in Auckland investment in its off-course facilities were as important as maintaining the green oasis bequeathed by a certain Dr. Alister MacKenzie.

While this first building on the current site served the Club well and was the subject of several refurbishments, many members would agree the new building when it arrived was long overdue.

The original clubhouse at New Lynn had been built in 1921 and the two-story design by its architect Mr Moodie included sleepover provision for five couples.

The Club has a dedicated Hospitality Manager to take care of the needs of our members and their guests. There are eight beers on tap and the Club endeavours to have every members’ preferred drink in stock. The wine selection is equally extensive with the Club having recently switched to a more discerning supplier. In short, member comfort is paramount and nothing is too much trouble.

Our caterers, Jay Currie and Nick Little, operating as Cook & Butler Cuisine, provide a variety and quality of catering that is highly regarded. PwC Masters Monday In a nod to the Masters, PwC holds its annual corporate golf day each year at Titirangi to coincide with the final round of the Masters. PwC has harnessed the world’s pre-eminent golfing tournament with their corporate golf day in number of ways.

First and foremost, Titirangi and Augusta National, the home of the Masters, were both designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie. Like the Masters, guests are formally invited to play at PwC Masters Monday. The day itself brings the heart and passion of the Masters to our very doorstep.

The day starts with PwC staff and clients watching the final round of the Masters at the Clubrooms over a cooked breakfast. At the completion of the Masters, an Ambrose tournament takes place with the dedicated and focused teams battling the course and striving to shoot the lowest score. With the introduction of real-time scoring on smart-phones, this has increased the rivalry on the day. During the PwC Masters Monday tournament, caddies in the customary white overalls can also be seen dotted

around the course to assist the teams in navigating from tee to green.

Following the completion of the tournament, the members of the winning team leave with their very own green jacket, one of the most cherished and iconic items in world sport and to the envy of their fellow PwC Masters Monday competitors.

Junior Golf Titirangi may be a club immersed in history and tradition, but equally we are progressive and forward-thinking and look to the future.

The Club is passionate about junior golf, committed to growing the game and developing the next generation of young players.

A successful Junior Academy is dedicated to taking players whatever their level of natural ability and developing them into competent golfers.

Titirangi offers access to junior coaching clinics on Sunday mornings to children of all ages. Initially, you don’t even have to be a member, though of course we would love you to join.

The Academy, mostly funded by donations with a small fee charged to participants, is run at the following times each Sunday (please phone to book and confirm availability):

Rather than introduce competition too early and risk discouraging the late developers from ever realising their potential, Sam ensures the child works at a pace that he or she is comfortable with.

The final stage is then creating competitive golfers who along the way have developed a love and passion for the game. Result: a thriving junior section.

Titirangi has teams that compete annually in the junior pennant, a team event that provides young golfers with the opportunity to test their skills and learn matchplay competition in a fun and supportive environment. It gives the youngsters valuable experience of competitive golf and is a perfect stepping stone to the adult’s interclub teams.

Competitions are also run regularly within the Club, generally on Sunday afternoons. There is also an annual Junior Club Championship held just before Christmas.

Membership rates are greatly discounted to encourage juniors to become a part of Titirangi and experience all that is good about golf club membership.

Titirangi has produced countless good golfers over the years and numerous players have been selected to represent their district and New Zealand. It is an honour both for the player and the Club.

We are a members’ golf club and there are certain times of the week reserved for club events. Visitors, for instance, are not permitted on Wednesday and Saturday before 1pm, namely until the Club’s competitions have been completed.

If you are lucky enough to secure a tee-time, a unique experience awaits. There is no better time to play the course as a visitor than on our Back Tee Challenge Days that are generally held on the last Friday of every month (January to November, please check with the Club regarding availability).

As the name of the event would suggest, this is an opportunity to play Titirangi from the Black Championship Tees. Not only is the green fee for the day substantially reduced, there is the opportunity to win a host of prizes from an extensive prize table. In addition, each monthly gross and stableford winner goes into an end-of-year draw to win a year’s full playing membership (conditions apply).

Not able to make the last Friday of the month? There’s still the opportunity to take home a great prize in each and every round by taking the MacKenzie Challenge.

It’s not as easy as it sounds. Each hole provides a true golfing test and as they are set at four different points of the compass, each will provide its own examination of your game regardless of which direction the wind is blowing on any particular day.

Titirangi is a championship golf course, and as such a reasonable standard of golf proficiency is both expected and required from visitors. The Club has a dress code and a good pace of play is also expected on busier days. Fourballs, for instance, are expected to take no more than four hours ten minutes to complete 18 holes.

Members’ Golf Titirangi is a golfer’s golf club, and for those interested in playing the game we all love there are a host of opportunities to do so.

Competitive golf, fun golf, social golf, team golf, interclub golf, golf for singles, golf for pairs, mixed golf, strokeplay, matchplay, medal rounds or Stableford. You name it, the chance is that we can offer it.

Few events throughout the season are more exciting than the annual pennants run by Auckland Golf Inc. It’s club golf at its best and as its the premier team event for the Club player it will come as little surprise to learn that Titirangi plays a full and active part.

Titirangi fields teams in all the men’s divisions including the premier Auckland event, the Bissett Shield. 2016 saw Titirangi reach the final of all three top divisions, culminating in the winning of the Bissett Shield (the pinnacle of inter-club golf).

All matches in each division are played at a single different host club on a round-robin basis between February and May, giving the opportunity to enjoy some of the area’s other outstanding courses.

It is recognised, however, that not every golfer can threaten par on a regular basis and there are team events aimed at those with higher handicaps, widening the opportunity to golfers of all levels to represent their club.

Within the Club, there are a host of events organised throughout the golfing season, with the men enjoying a full competition programme each Wednesday and Saturday that varies between strokeplay and matchplay.

Many trophies – such as the Gardner Cup – date back to the very early years of the Club and carry with them great prestige.

Two of the Club’s ‘Majors’ are the Strokeplay and Matchplay Championships that are held in February/ March and October/November respectively.

The Club has some seriously good golfers and while becoming the overall club champion may be an

honour out of reach for many, accompanying events played off handicap assures that any golfer whatever their level is able to savour the feeling that comes with lifting a trophy.

It is far from all serious, though, with social golf playing just as important part in the Club calendar. Up to 100 participants can be seen enjoying an informal scramble every Wednesday and Saturday, while the Seniors (over-50s) play every Monday morning in their own mini-competitions.

Twilight Golf takes place every Thursday evening throughout the daylight savings period with a 6pm start. There are competitions for men and women and some fantastic prizes to be won.

Our Seniors enjoy two long-standing annual challenge matches, against St Andrews (Hamilton) and Maungakiekie (Mount Roskill) with the venue alternating each year. It’s always nice to win, but

these events are more about rekindling longstanding friendships and preserving the spirit of golf, something dear to our hearts at our traditional club.

Among the highlights of the season are Melbourne Cup Day, the Club’s biggest event with a field of 128, an accompanying Calcutta auction and, of course, the big race itself. It’s a clubhouse experience not to be missed!

The Alister MacKenzie tournament is a hugely popular mixed event played over three Sundays in the spring, and is a team event with a Ryder Cup format featuring foursomes, fourballs and singles.

The Rex George and Oliver Hollis Trophy – named after two of the Titirangi’s most famous golfers – is an annual tournament for mixed couples, its importance in the Club schedule highlighting the togetherness of the Club.

Women’s Golf Titirangi has a very competitive women’s section which is always featuring high up the honours board of Auckland Pennant competitions each year.

Possibly a result of women learning to play on a course which is a true test of your abilities and allows women to develop all facets of their golf game.

Winning is nice but certainly not everything at Titirangi. We have a great bunch of ladies from all walks and stages of life, from a strong junior presence with national-ranked players through to a very hardy bunch in their 80s.

We cater for all abilities from those on single figures who can really test their skills playing off the men’s white tees, through to a great course offered off the standard women’s yellow tees or a slightly shorter option offered off the women’s red tees.

There is great camaraderie among all players and

we are now building a very strong and fun 9-hole section which could well be the future of ladies’ golf.

A nice 9-hole walk with a great bunch of friends on a beautiful course just 20 minutes from the CBD, followed by a great coffee and food in our lovely café.

Golf is certainly a game for women. As Babe Didrikson Zaharias once stated: “Golf is a game of coordination, rhythm and grace; women have these to a high degree.”

Reciprocal Golf Titirangi has reciprocal relationships with a number of other golf clubs across New Zealand and Australia and even three in England. These provide added value to memberships and allow members to enjoy golf on other fine courses at little or no cost while away from home for business or pleasure.

Each relationship is unique and terms and conditions vary between clubs. In the case of overseas clubs, a letter of introduction will be required and can be obtained by contacting the Golf Office. For tee bookings members can contact the reciprocal club directly or ask our Golf Office to make the booking for you.

Your access will be aligned to a membership category at the reciprocal club that is similar in type to your membership category at Titirangi. On most occasions Club membership cards are also required to be shown and in some cases a member’s green fee is payable (indicated by **).
