A look back at the second semester This second semester, we got off to a flying start with Tio’s Career Event in Nieuwegein, where entrepreneurs like Jort Kelder (Quote) and Alex Hes (E&A Events) gave inspiring presentations for the students. With over 150 businesses in attendance at the Career Expo, it seems a safe bet that everyone will have found an exciting internship. Besides the Career Event, what else went on in the second semester?

The agenda for last semester also included the finals of the project week. Students worked on a variety of projects in connection with the theme of ‘entrepreneurship’. The Hotel Management students, for example, wrote a business plan for the Mijn TopTent project, while the Commerce Economics and Entrepreneurship students explored the world of e-commerce in the Digital Student Company.

Numerous exciting activities were organised as well.

These included a masterclass from Jermain de Rozario, owner of Michelin-rated restaurant De Rozario, and valuable guest lectures from companies such as Megawatt (advertising, digital and field marketing) and the Floriade (the world horticultural exhibition).

Now that the summer break is just around the corner, many students are preparing for their

summer internships and final thesis projects. To give an impression of what other students’ internships were like, we spoke to Commerce Economics and Entrepreneurship student Jaap, who did an internship at Red Bull in Austria. Read his interview on page 10.

Finally, I’d like to look ahead for just a moment, to the upcoming academic year. It is with deserved pride that I can share with you all that, from September, Tio University of Applied Sciences will have a brand-new look! In this Tio Chat, we will give you all a small sneak peek into what’s ahead.

Tio Career Event: a great success!

Put 900 ambitious students, 150 renowned companies and several inspiring guest speakers together and you have the Tio Career Event! During this annual event, Tio students seek out a dream internship or graduation project for themselves and work on building their networks.

Networking and inspiration Here, in an informal festival atmosphere, students get the chance to network with companies and fellow students.

And if they need a nice profile picture for their CV or LinkedIn profile, a professional photographer is on hand to help. Whatever it takes to get that dream internship! Commerce Economics and Entrepreneurship student Charlotte says: "I like that by coming here, I can gain an impression of the different internship companies. The Career Event is really top-notch, with interesting speakers."

Work hard, work smart and persevere Speakers? Yes indeed: on behalf of business students, host Welmoed Sijtsma (from popular Dutch TV-show Wie is de Mol?) asks former Quote editor-in-chief and journalist Jort Kelder all kinds of questions. Jort: "To become a great entrepreneur, you have to go all the way. Hard work, but above all smart work. Truly great minds are the ones who do something that’s never been done before.” For the hospitality and tourism students, E&A Events founder Alex Hes explains how his company has grown into such a huge success. Above all, he urges the students to persevere, even in the face of adversity: "You may face setbacks, but if you really want something, you’ll get there in the end!"

The first step is looking for a cool internship. At the Career Expo, more than 150 renowned companies such as ABN AMRO, Corendon and Hotels van Oranje are eagerly awaiting the students’ arrival, looking for the best match. That’s because an intern from the best small university of applied sciences in the Netherlands is a valuable commodity for them! •

My tip for interns is to be assertive. Rather than focusing too much on being ‘just’ an intern, try to be confident enough to put forth your own ideas, too.

Jaap’s internship with Red Bull gives him wings After spending two years ‘stuck in place’ thanks to Covid-19, Commerce Economics and Entrepreneurship student Jaap knew one thing for sure: It was time for an adventure! He managed to arrange an internship at the Red Bull headquarters in Fuschl am See, Austria, which he then took to like a fish in water.

If you want something, go for it So how do you end up at Red Bull, makers of the incredibly popular energy drink and the brand behind the Formula 1 racing team that includes world champion Max Verstappen?

And at their international headquarter near Salzburg, too!

“It was a combination of being a bit cheeky and, more importantly; showing that I really wanted it,” says Jaap.

“During the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Zandvoort, I struck up a conversation with someone from Red Bull. During our chat, I mentioned that I was looking for an internship and that a job in Red Bull’s marketing department would be a really good fit for my study programme. That’s what got the ball rolling.”

When can you start?

Jaap didn’t hesitate for a moment and continued to pursue his plan. “We exchanged contact information and then I sent them an email with my cover letter and CV. Soon, I had an online interview with the team leader for ‘Global Product Brand Marketing’. My profile turned out to be a match for them and, during the interview, we clicked right away. The final question was ‘when can you start?’”

Activating consumers For Jaap, this is the second internship during his study programme – which means he had to conduct research as well. On behalf of Red Bull, he plans to identify factors that motivate 18 to 24-year-old TikTok users to act. “In jargon, this is what we call consumer activation. Red Bull organises and is involved in countless events, to which we want to draw attention and ultimately attract a large number of visitors. TikTok is an important channel for those efforts and I am analysing the possibilities for generating awareness in the right target group. That might mean challenges, prize giveaways or quiz questions. It’s a research project that is a

good match for the content of my study programme,” Jaap explains.

Open mind and nose to the grindstone Every day, Jaap commutes just under thirty minutes from his apartment in Salzburg to the office in Fuschl. “It’s a really scenic drive through the mountains. And once you get there, you find yourself in a melting pot of different cultures. The workforce at Red Bull has a strong international orientation, which is a conscious choice on the company’s part. They are always looking for a fresh pair of eyes, as they say here. All of my colleagues are open-minded and we spend a lot of time together outside of work as well. But make no mistake: as much as they love the company, Red Bull’s employees still know how to put their nose to the grindstone. I was very warmly received here and, from the start, people involved me in all kinds of things. I immediately felt at home.”

Choose adventure When Jaap looks around, he sees primarily young employees – which makes for a pleasant, dynamic climate in the office.

“I’m learning an incredible amount during this internship and my advice to everyone would be to dare to think big when it comes to an internship. Rather than going straight for the easiest route, seek out a challenge or choose adventure.”

Final thesis in a multi-faceted environment “I have seen the kind of possibilities that exist within a company like Red Bull. My research is aimed at marketing, but there are also opportunities in sales or in an operational position. My next step is a final thesis project, which I hope to do with a similarly great brand at an equally multi-faceted company. The very idea gives you energy, doesn’t it?” •

“As a study coach, I have the best job at Tio!” Nathalie van der Pluijm is a study coach for the vocational programmes at Tio Rotterdam. “I’ve been working at Tio for 12.5 years now, and enjoyed every minute. It is absolutely fantastic to be able to offer students help and guidance during their studies.”

Guidance from enrolment to graduation ceremony “As a coach, my ultimate goal is to support and guide students as effectively as possible, from the moment they first set foot at Tio to the day they receive their diplomas.” It’s no coincidence that, as Nathalie explains, the graduation ceremony is her very favourite part of the academic year. “It is amazing to guide students on their way to professional practice and to watch them grow up.

For some students, you can really make a big difference.

As a study coach, I have a chance to motivate and support the students in a different way than their parents can and do.

Because each student has me as their study coach for the duration of their studies, it’s possible to build a real personal connection.”

Classical check-in “In addition to the individual meetings with the study coach, there are also weekly contact moments that are held with the group. This classical teaching moment is intended primarily to help students learn more about finding an internship and how to do things like prepare for a job interview. Many times, though, the scope of the lesson is broadened and it becomes a real mentorship moment. I also use the lesson as a ‘classical checkin’ to see how the students are doing and, depending on what is needed, to offer them guidance or tips.”

Independence “The personal learning journey is an important part of studying at Tio. It’s fantastic to see the difference between how students are when they arrive and when they leave Tio as young adult professionals. And it’s precisely that personal development on the students’ part that makes my job so enjoyable.” •

Tio takes new building into use in Groningen Groningen is the #1 student city in the Netherlands, with students making up an impressive quarter of its residents. So naturally, Tio University of Applied Sciences needs to be there as well! What’s more, we are the only educational institution in Groningen that offers tourism and hotel-related study programmes.

In September 2021, the first Tio students began their studies in the heart of the city of Groningen.

This was initially at a temporary location in Hotel Schimmelpenninck Huys. Since early 2022, Tio Groningen is located on the Phebensstraat.

The new school building has undergone a full renovation, entirely in keeping with Tio's corporate identity. The building houses some thirty classrooms, with a variety of practical training spaces furnished specifically to act as a courtroom, restaurant, reception desk and boardroom. •

Cognatio Gala By: Pauline Hommes National PR & Promotion L.S.V. Cognatio Once the Covid-19 measures were relaxed, it was high time for a party! Luckily, Cognatio was up to the task.

This past March, Cognatio organised a gala in the Renaissance Koepelkerk in Amsterdam. With over 600 students from all campuses in attendance, the party was spectacular. The bar served refreshing drinks for everyone and there was even a special champagne bar on hand!

The event also featured performances from DJ la June, Mitch, Nordin, Dries Roelvink and Mr. Belt & Wezol. The crowd enjoyed singing along to their favourite Dutch hit songs and the evening wrapped up with a dose of house music.

All in all, it was an unforgettable party at a fantastic location. We hope to see all of you again at the next party! •

Don’t wait, don’t hesitate, just do it On 8 March, Tio Amsterdam opens its doors earlier than usual. This is no coincidence: that morning, students are warmly welcomed to an entrepreneurs’ breakfast!

Author and business owner Edward Nagel pays a visit to inspire the students. Edward has over 25 years of practical experience in change management, sales and development of domestic and international markets. In his book Maandagmorgen staat alles op z’n kop [Everything’s topsy-turvy on Monday morning], he shares practical tips which entrepreneurs can apply in their own businesses straight away. Time to roll up their sleeves and get started!

This is really great. Now I just need to find an opportunity to roll-out so I can start the business.

7:00 Already, there is a buzz of activity: assistant campus manager Caroline van de Scheur is hard at work preparing the breakfast, while campus manager Martijn Naberman inspects the building and assistant campus manager Charlotte Parrée welcomes the speaker of the day.

7:10 Although it is still dark outside, the interior of the building is now toasty warm. The coffee is percolating as the first students enter; despite the early hour, everyone has dressed up for the event.

Getting creative with CSR More and more companies are focusing on Corporate Social Responsibility. Nowadays, companies are expected to work with the three Ps in mind: People, Planet and Profit.

The CSR course is becoming increasingly relevant for Tio students as well. In this course, students explore how a given company is performing in areas such as sustainability and diversity. The course concludes with an assignment to design a poster and a final presentation.

In his spare time, Hotel and Event Management student Pieter likes to make detailed drawings. That came in handy when it was time to make a poster design for the company he chose, Hilton.

He created a megacity, an architectural fantasy. Within this utopia, he drew buildings from various cities around the world. Sustainable high-tech transport systems have been integrated into the city.

Pieter says the following about his poster: “I chose ‘high-tech transport’ as my topic. In the poster, I’ve depicted multiple future modes of transport that are relevant to Hilton.

The underlying idea is that innovative transport with an eye to sustainability can bring cities closer together, including hotels.”

Lecturer Yasemin Sahin explains the course she teaches: “As a lecturer, I find teaching the CSR course very satisfying. I get to watch my students grow over the course of the semester, which makes me proud. They simply don’t believe in fine words and polished ad campaigns – they see right through those. What I impress on my students is that the world is out there and the only way to ensure a bright future is to create it yourselves.” •

An inspiring masterclass from Jermain de Rozario On 30 March, restaurant owner Jermain de Rozario gave a masterclass for the students at Tio Eindhoven.

Jermain de Rozario has all the students listening in hushed silence as he tells his story. He is not ‘just’ a restaurant owner, but in possession of a coveted Michelin star as well. For a full hour, the students listen with bated breath as he explains his views on life. Jermain talks about how he decided to become a chef, the obstacles he faced along the way and the relative nature of being a celebrity chef. •

The way that a top chef prepares a dish isn’t always the best approach for you, as an individual, to take.

You should do whatever you enjoy, or whatever makes it tasty to you. Why would you do it any other way?

Diplomas awarded to Tio students Tio Utrecht is ready: they’ve rolled out the red carpet. The balloons and roses are in position. It’s time for the vocational education students’ graduation ceremony to begin!

Cherry on top Campus manager Manon Lenferink beamed with joy and pride as she welcomes her students to the stage. A number of great memories were recounted: the introduction days in the Belgian Ardennes and the adventurous Outdoor project, the internships, combining study with the student life. Now, of course, it no longer matters. Everyone has graduated and can now cross the stage in their cap and gown to receive their diploma!

The graduation ceremony is the best part of our work.

They come in still wet behind the ears and we get to watch them grow into real adults. For us, that’s the cherry on top.

Ambitious students One can’t help but notice how often the words ‘drive’ and ‘ambition’ crop up during the speeches. These are defining characteristics of Tio students, and this group is no exception.

The new graduates from the programme Steward(ess) Receptionist(e) Host(ess) are keen to fly with KLM. Most of the students from Commercial Business Management and Hotel Management plan to continue their studies.

Top student Carmen The aforementioned ambition is certainly present in Carmen, a Commercial Business Management student. She has been named ‘top student’ in her cohort. Lecturer JanJoost Wijkamp had high praise for Carmen: “Many of the

projects you handed in were already at a bachelor level. You have the potential to do well in higher education – now go take advantage of that.” And that’s precisely what she plans to do.

Carmen has already found a job as account manager, but intends to continue her studies at the same time.

Will it be International Business Management or Commerce Economics and Entrepreneurship? She hasn’t decided yet.

She does, however, plan to do an internship in the United States during the Bachelor programme. That was something Carmen had intended to do during her vocational education programme, but was forced to cancel due to the pandemic.

Personal connection During the study programme, the students build genuine personal connections with their lecturers and study coaches, as well as with the assistant campus managers. Melis, for example, has brought a small gift as a way to say thank you to her study coach Frank Bulthuis and the assistant campus manager Marscha Schenk for all they have done in the past few years.

Friends and family are on hand as well, holding gifts and with cameras at the ready. There is no such thing as too many pictures of a wonderful moment like this. Time for champagne and tasty hors d'oeuvres. Now the party can really start! •

Fascinating masterclass from Herman Hell Myriad positive responses to the masterclass from true-blue Rotterdammer Herman Hell at Tio Rotterdam. Herman is the successful owner of the ambitious Hells Kitchen Horeca Groep, which includes leading Rotterdam restaurant-cafés such as Loos, het Zalmhuis, het Westerpaviljoen and Café van Zanten. On 14 April, he shared his unique and controversial perspectives on matters such as corporate takeovers and employee motivation. Then he gamely faced a barrage of spontaneous questions from students. Our compliments to hostess Shamira (Hotel and Event Management student) and host Paul van der Kleij (lecturer) who made sure the whole day ran smoothly.

I wasn’t bored for a single moment. Didn’t even feel the need to check my phone!

He doesn’t answer to shareholders and everyone benefits from the shared success. According to Herman, staff are motivated by good secondary terms of employment. And he puts an original spin on this idea, too. In addition to bonuses, his employees can take advantage of perks like a ‘beauty day’ to get their hair and nails done, or he might reward them by arranging a full cleaning for their home.

When looking for potential restaurant takeovers, he uses a kind of ‘Bingo card of desires’. If it’s a Bingo, he explores what would be needed to make it profitable.

Herman likes to keep things local and focuses on Rotterdam-based businesses. This is not only cost efficient, but also prevents fragmentation and helps preserve the sense of being a family. •

Hosting was really fun. And I liked not only asking pre-prepared questions, but getting to respond to the spontaneous questions from the audience and Herman’s answers. It resulted in a great dialogue.

Guest lecture days Interesting guest lectures have taken place at the various campuses. Read on for a selection of these inspiring sessions. •

Guest lecture day in Eindhoven – Megawatt Together with her colleague Stacey, Tio alumna Jitte Kleinbekman explained what makes Megawatt such a fun place to work. The pair gave students a glimpse into a variety of case studies involving clients such as Netflix, Fanta and Sprite.

Afterwards, the participants all agreed that it had been an inspiring guest lecture.

The great thing was that students from different fields of study were able to identify with the presentation.

Afterwards, a business lunch with ten young and experienced entrepreneurs – including two Tio alums – was held for the business students. The students asked the entrepreneurs countless questions, about all kinds of things. It was a valuable day and much was learned!

Guest lecture day in Utrecht – Floriade On 11 April, Tio Utrecht students were introduced to the world horticulture exhibition known as Floriade. The majority of the students had never heard of Floriade and were surprised by how large it actually is.

Floriade is held only once every ten years; this year, it is taking place in Almere from 14 April through 9 October. This edition focuses on fun and innovative ways to enhance the sustainability of cities.

During the guest lecture, it became evident how important the pillars of sustainability, innovation and nature are for cities. That knowledge will prove useful in various courses offered at Tio!

Students pay a company visit to Pon On Wednesday 13 April, students from Tio Amsterdam had the chance to pay a visit to Pon’s ‘Mobility Experience’ in Amsterdam. Pon is best known for brands such as Lamborghini, Bugatti, Bentley and so on. The students were excited even before the visit began and were more than eager to participate. In fact, there was a waiting list!

A tour was provided and the students were told more about Pon’s background. All in all, the visit was a great success and absolutely worth repeating!

A visit to the Red Cross Hospital The Red Cross Hospital in Beverwijk is planning to make quite a few big changes, and these are relevant to students at the operational, tactical and strategic level.

Sustainability, innovations, digitisation, new construction and reorganisation are all prominent points on the agenda. This makes the hospital ideal for company visits and MBA projects.

Hospitality in healthcare Second-year students from the Hotel management programme at Tio Amsterdam paid a visit to the Red Cross

Hospital as part of the Food & Beverage Operations course. There, they were given a tour by Hospitality Manager Tim Maathuis. They explored the kitchens where 200 fresh meals and beverages are prepared for patients every day. The vocational education students showed a sharp eye for detail and asked critical questions. Tim’s idea to do an internship in the healthcare field was met with immediate enthusiasm!

The company visit concluded with a lunch in the company canteen. •

The hospital of the future MBA Hospitality students Merle and Rosanne were given a tour of the hospital as well. As part of the Strategic Facility Management module, they visited the departments that have to do with various facilities.

You’re not elaborating this case study for your lecturer, but for a serious business – and that’s really cool.

The hospital is undergoing a transition and is in the middle of renovation work and new construction. In order to become the hospital of the future, it will need a futureproof office concept as well. Merle and Rosanne’s assignment is therefore to deliver a good concept, one that had been proven both financially sound and usable for the hospital. •

We are Tio Did you know that, of the more than 50 years that Tio University of Applied Sciences has been around, we have been using the same branding for the past 20 years? High time, in other words, to take a good hard look at the Tio brand! Even today, people often associate Tio with the tourism sector. This is not so strange when you consider that we were founded by the tourism business community in 1969. Since 2012, however, we have added a variety of new business programmes each year, and as a result, the strong association with tourism is no longer desirable. This was also the motivation for us to reconsider the position and identity of Tio. In recent months, a great deal of work has been carried out behind the scenes in order to further develop our brand.

We researched our competitors; spoke with students, parents and staff; and took a long, thorough look at our corporate identity. And our conclusion was that, as a brand, we are already doing a lot of things right! That’s why this continued development is not a revolution, but rather an evolution.

As always, Tio continues to stand for personal, excellent and entrepreneurial education. We help students maximise their potential in order to become the best possible versions of themselves, in both their careers and their personal lives. At Tio, we work with students each and every day to develop their talents. After all, as Aristotle said, ‘whatever you pay attention to will grow’. This is reflected in our new brand promise: DEVELOPING POTENTIAL. In addition to this promise, Tio is gaining a new look, too!

From the start of the new academic year, the look & feel of Tio will change. But don’t worry: we will stay true to our core values as we make this update and take a new step towards maturity. Our logo, for instance, will become sleeker and more modern. We will also dispense with the rainbow of colours and will begin using our familiar ‘O’ in new ways.

With this sneak peek, we hope to make you all curious about the upcoming changes. We look forward to surprising you with the first new communications and visual expressions in September! •

Studying in the Netherlands He has his roots in Iceland & France and grew up in Luxembourg. She comes from Andorra. Now Leo and Nerea are both studying Hotel and Event Management at Tio. Leo came to the Netherlands three years ago and found his way to Tio Amsterdam via HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. Nerea is an exchange student from the University of Barcelona. We talk about why they chose Tio and their experiences.

Learning by doing Studying at Tio has its advantages. One of them is practice-oriented education. Leo tells us: “One of the reasons why I chose Tio was the Hotel and Event Week. You take over a hotel together with your fellow students and it’s completely ours! It’s a learning experience you can’t get anywhere else."

Nerea also sees this hands-on approach as a big advantage. The first time I saw the practice rooms, such as the restaurant and hotel reception, I was impressed. It is so cool to be able to actually do it, check in guests or serve in the restaurant. When you learn these things from a book, you read it and then you just forget about it."

“The old-fashioned way of teaching involves learning things by heart”, Leo explains. “However, it is far more effective to learn the theory and then apply it in practice.

That way, you retain the knowledge in your head. It’s a better way of teaching, and we get that here at Tio.”

Small classes and self-development Nerea also sees the small class sizes as an advantage compared to her university in Barcelona. “I recommend Tio to all my friends. It’s such a big difference. Here there are only thirteen people in my class. In Barcelona there were more than a hundred. The lecturers at Tio actually know my name. I’m used to lecturers who read a PowerPoint and don’t interact with their students. That’s totally different at Tio." Leo: “What’s great is that at Tio we learn how to present ourselves and focus on our social and people skills. Before I never saw the point of the professional development lessons we are given. But now that I am busy building my own network, I understand their importance."

What do they think of the Netherlands?

Even though these two students have seen quite a bit of the Netherlands, moving to a new country is always exciting. Nerea did not come alone, she brought her dog Baloo. She found it easy to adapt. “I noticed that people

here are a bit closed, but very direct. In Barcelona, people are more social. I’m starting to get used to it."

Leo has lived in several countries before and quickly found his way around. Living on your own in different countries makes you flexible. Something that certainly comes in handy in his desire to work in the ever-changing events industry.

What’s next after Tio? Nerea has no definite plans yet but staying in Amsterdam for a year or two is certainly an option. “Here there are many more job opportunities for students. In Spain you have to start from the bottom. In the Netherlands you can start immediately at a higher level after graduating."

Laughing, she adds: “And the salaries here are better!”

As for Leo, he will definitely be staying in Amsterdam for the next few years. “I want to pursue a career in events, being part of an event team at various hotels in the Netherlands or maybe the UK sounds amazing!” •

European Mise en Place Cup (EMCup) On 24 and 25 April, it was time once again for the EMCup! The EMCup is a competition amongst the best European Hotel Management Schools.

This year, Georgina, Latascha, Mika, Pien and Sem represented Tio under the team name ‘Dutch DyNAmites’.

The first day focused on getting to know the other teams and networking with people from the hotel industry. The day started with a kick-off featuring an inspiring speech from successful entrepreneur Mark Livings. After that, the candidates took part in various training sessions and the day was capped off with a networking dinner. All the candidates, coaches and businesses attended this dinner, making it an ideal opportunity for networking.

The competition itself was held on day two. The teams were given a case study, for which they had to find a solution and then pitch their idea to several jury members.

The top 14 pitches were selected to battle it out with one

another in a debate round. Tio also advanced to the next round and won the debate against a team from Barcelona!

The winning teams then had to prepare a final case study to be pitched in front of all students and jury members – around 300 people. The winner was announced during the gala dinner.

Even though Tio's team is not victorious this year, we can look back at our amazing team’s results with a great deal of pride. Fantastic work, guys! •

Lecturer Margôt: “My goal is to help students get off to a flying start” After twenty years in the sky as a Purser and five years in an office as an Executive Assistant at KLM, Margôt Koch-Noorlander became a lecturer at Tio in 2019. At the moment, she is combining her teaching duties with a business of her own, Happy2Organize. “Keeping one foot in professional practice means you always have new real-world examples that you can use during the lessons,” Margôt says.

Making amazing trips with KLM In 1991, after earning a Master’s in Business from Erasmus University Rotterdam, Margôt took a job as Account Manager with ABN AMRO bank. After several years, she found that a nine-to-five job wasn’t right for her and decided to turn her travel hobby into a job – so she took to the air as a flight attendant with KLM. “I’ve had the privilege and great pleasure of working at KLM for 25 years. After spending twenty years at a job high in the sky, I’ve been working at a figuratively high level as an Executive Assistant in the KLM office for five years.”

Her journey to Tio After leaving KLM, Margôt started a business of her own, in which she helps other business owners with their financial administration. Margôt explains: “When I saw an ad for lecturers in the Aviation courses at Tio, everything fell into place for me. Teaching had always seemed fun to me, especially in subjects with which I have 25 years’ experience.

That’s how I started working at Tio.” Helping students get off to a flying start After two years of teaching Aviation courses in the vocational programme Stewardess Receptionist Hostess, Margôt switched to teaching financial courses. “Now I teach Business and Finance & Accounting classes to first-year students at Tio.” Stories from real-world practice When asked about the qualities a lecturer needs to teach at Tio, Margôt says: “If you want to work at Tio, really, the most important thing is practical experience. It is crucial that you, as a lecturer, are really capable of linking the material with real-world practice.”

For her part, Margôt uses a lot of examples from her career with KLM. “One fun example I use in my lessons is when KLM and Air France joined together. Was that a merger or an acquisition? And what is the difference between the two terms? Then, for example, I talk about the Air France KLM holding company and how the merger affected KLM stock.”

Margôt also uses many examples from current events. “In class, I often pull out the economics section of the newspaper and talk about something like the rising price of gas, for example. It’s a way for me to help students think about what that means for business owners. That is how I try to break down the sometimes dry business-course material into something they can easily grasp.”

Advantages of Tio As for the advantages of being a Tio lecturer, Margôt mentions the small-scale nature of the study programmes and the personal approach to students. “Thanks to the small classes of around ten to twelve students, I can get a good idea of each student’s individual learning style. One student might need extra practice and another might benefit from hearing the material explained a few more times. That lets me adjust the material to meet the needs of individual students. I really like that personalised approach. Every time a student earns a good mark on an exam, it makes me happy.” •

A kick-start to her career: Imke is working toward an Associate degree After earning a vocational education diploma, Imke was eager to continue her studies. But what was she looking for in a further study programme? “I couldn’t see myself spending four more years as a student and I wanted a fast-track programme to earning a higher education degree."

Her road to Tio After completing her vocational programme, Imke enrolled in the Facility Management Bachelor programme at the HAN University of Applied Sciences. Her programme coincided with the pandemic, however, which made it hard for Imke to feel motivated about her studies. As a result, she did not earn enough credits and eventually decided to look around for other study programme options. Imke explains: “My mother came up with the suggestion of enrolling at Tio, and right away, I liked the idea. I felt like a four-year programme was too long, and at Tio, I could earn an Associate degree in Hotel and Event Management in two years. That was exactly what I was looking for.”

Subject matter that sparks your imagination Imke is enjoying her studies at Tio: “The first semester was a nice mix of practical courses, like Cooking, and theorybased courses like Marketing, Sales and Finance. That combination of practical and theoretical instruction really makes me feel like I’m learning a lot and am better able to understand the material. Most of the lecturers are

professionals in the field themselves, so they always have interesting stories from real-world practice. That really sparks your imagination.”

The company visits that were organised helped me get a good picture of the future professional field as well. “We have already visited several different hotels, which I really liked!” Imke’s favourite activity took place during the Hotel and Event week. “I was part of a group of students that was assigned a Stayokay location, which we then had to run as a full-fledged hotel for a week, all by ourselves. Not only did we learn a lot, it was just really fun, too!”

Internship abroad For Tio students, the summer months are all about internships. Imke, for instance, is dreaming about doing an internship on Ibiza next summer: “I’ve heard good things about it, and I like the fact that it’s still in Europe – that way, it’s easy for my friends to come visit me.” Imke will be staying in the Netherlands for her internship this summer, when she’ll be working at Mercure Hotel in Nijmegen. •

Tio laid the foundation for my career Kelly Kooij grew up with the hotel and catering industry; as a teenager, Kelly could often be found working in one of her parents’ hospitality businesses. It was the obvious choice for her to enrol in the Hotel and Event Management programme at Tio University of Applied Sciences. Since her time at Tio, Kelly has taken exciting steps in her career.

She currently leads the marketing and communication team at Team Alert. In our conversation with Tio alumna Kelly, she explains how Tio laid the foundation for her career.

Fast track to a bachelor degree After finishing a vocational hotel management school, Kelly was eager to earn a bachelor's degree degree as well. She quickly decided that Tio was the place, she says, because it was well-aligned with her previous education. At the time, what was her main reason for choosing Tio? “It was because it offered a fast track to a bachelor's degree. Plus I think Event Management is a really exciting subject, too.

I also found the Nima courses, like Marketing, Sales and Communication, particularly appealing. So in that sense, Tio is not a traditional hotel school, because it offers you quite broad training with a variety of courses.”

A broad foundation provides opportunities After graduating from Tio, Kelly’s career progressed at lightning speed. “After earning my bachelor's degree. I first worked at an ad agency for a number of years. After that, I found myself itching to return to the hospitality industry so I took a job in the hotel sector.” Most of her tasks there had to do with organising events for successful hotel chains such as Holiday Inn and NH Group. “Events are an effective means of communication and, in that light, the work I was doing at the time was a nice combination of my love of marketing and hospitality,” Kelly says with enthusiasm.

After several years, Kelly took the next step in her career.

“The broad range of courses I took at Tio, including Marketing, Communication, Sales and Management, provided me with a solid foundation for taking good career steps in marketing as well. My broad knowledge, interest in marketing and background in the hospitality industry all worked to open new doors for me. In other words, your future after graduation is in no way set in stone; you can go in pretty much any direction.”

Now, some fifteen years later, Kelly works at Team Alert, an organisation that strives to reduce the number of young people involved in traffic accidents. There, she manages a multidisciplinary marketing and communication team that was developed in consultation with the research team for nationwide campaigns. She is also in charge of the transition to a data-driven organisation.

The love of hospitality never ends Kelly explains with a smile: “The fact that I now work in marketing, and have grown to love a different profession, doesn’t mean that my love for hospitality has faded. Not in the least!”

Tip: expand your network When asked if she has any other tips for students, she says: “Start networking the day your study programme begins.

Both within Tio and outside. Establishing connections with people can really help you move forward. Expanding your network is always a good thing.” •

Paul proudly explains the different varieties of wine grapes, what is needed for a successful harvest and the great deal of work that is required throughout the entire year.

Unique wine trip to the South of France In May, students in the wine study elective in Rotterdam had a very special event week: a wine trip to Château de l’Horte in Montbrun des Corbières, in the South of France. This fantastic trip was organised in cooperation with International Tourism Management student Senna and his father Paul. Their family opened their vineyard château and luxury wine villas to the class and made every effort to ensure the trip was an unforgettable experience. And they succeeded. In a word: amazing!

Interesting, fun and jam-packed programme The students participated in a jam-packed programme of activities. That included walks through the vast vineyards and visiting the château to take in a fascinating presentation by Paul about what growing grapes involves and how wine production has changed over the years. Plus, of course, the obligatory wine tasting as well. We visited the fortress city of Carcassonne, experienced the silence in Father Theo’s church and enjoyed mouth-watering meals from Omar in restaurant L’Oasis every evening. After dinner, there was always a fun activity: bingo, a pub quiz, karaoke and – why not – another wine tasting. There were opportunities for sports, dancing and

of course lazing about the swimming pools and jacuzzis at the wine villas. But the students also worked hard in groups to complete the event week assignment: to come up with a workable communication/marketing plan for Paul, in order to strengthen the link between wine production at the château and the wine villas as rental properties. Paul was impressed by the final presentations and the creative input from the students. He plans to put their ideas into practice soon!

Exciting finals Who will go home a winner?

Tio students learn by doing and by practising creative thinking! During different projects completed in the span of nearly a year, the students have a chance to roll up their sleeves and come up with new business concepts. During the day-long final, the finalists in the various projects then compete for the ultimate victory. Which teams are able to convince the expert jury to win eternal fame – and a nice cheque?

Branding Project First-year Commerce Economics and Entrepreneurship students can look back on an educational and enjoyable day. In the morning, the students are divided at random into ten groups. They are tasked with working together to come up with a product or service and a creative way to activate the brand.

1st prize “Smooth Skin” – sustainable make-up remover and facial oil tablet in one 2nd prize "Dydi" Dynamo Dixi – men's toilets where the urine stream generates energy by the means of a dynamo 3rd prize "Crhea Beer" – a colourful and summery beer brand focused on festival guests

After this, it is time to deliver a pitch to the expert jury! The students are bubbling over with creative ideas – from toilets that generate electricity to machines that dispense beer automatically. In the end, group 3 wins the final round with their idea called ‘Smooth Skin’, a sustainable make-up remover and face oil in one!

Digital Student Company Commerce Economics and Entrepreneurship students present their ideas during the all-day final! Their task is to convince the jury by means of an investor pitch – much like the TV programme Dragon’s Den. The final is filled with suspense, but ultimately the victory goes to Tio Hengelo for their idea ‘The Ultimate Card game’.

Food & Beverage Management A tapas bar with a DJ booth, an organic restaurant with its own vegetable garden, a rooftop bar made of igloos or perhaps a mojito lounge? For the jury of the Food & Beverage Management final, there are choices aplenty!

The assignment: come up with a new hospitality concept The second-year Hotel and Event management students have not spent the past year sitting idle: instead, they have envisioned new hospitality concepts, which the finalists are invited to pitch in front of a three-person expert jury. The jury responds with a barrage of critical questions. So who performed best under fire?

Who wins over the jury?

In the end, it is Shamira from Tio Rotterdam who managed to win over the jury with her ‘Tasteful Escape’: dining and an escape room in one. That means participants must solve puzzles by the time the next course arrives. “An incredibly good plan, and the structure is quite elegant!” said star entrepreneur Ernest Lefebvre, a member of the expert jury.

Shamira: “It’s totally amazing to have won! I really enjoyed this project and I truly stand behind my concept. Which is why I’m already working to test this concept in a restaurant, and I’ve already found multiple people who are willing to invest.”

Mijn TopTent and Mini-Onderneming Have you always wanted to run your own company? For second-year students in the Commercial Business Management programme, that dream becomes a reality during the Mini-Onderneming project! The students have a chance to set up a company of their own. In the final, they face off with second-year Hotel Management students who are looking for the most promising gap in the hospitality market as part of the Mijn TopTent project.

The battle is on!

Mijn TopTent: find the gaps As the creative ideas from the Hotel Management students show, there are plenty of gaps to be found in the hospitality market! From cosy sharing & tasting restaurants where global flavours are prepared with heart and passion, to a bar that pairs tapas with cocktails, there are still lots of opportunities out there!

Sustainable student companies The students participating in the Mini-Onderneming project have sustainability on their minds. For instance: promotional cards made from seed paper, that grow into a rose if you bury them in the soil. A high standard was set, as lecturer and chair of the day Ella Smith-Folkersma agrees: “I’m pleasantly flabbergasted by the ideas and concepts that were presented today!”

Who won the final?

Today’s winner: Isabel and her ‘Move Steps’: shared electric step-scooters in Rotterdam! Isabel: “Today was a bit of a nail-biter, but it was also fun and interesting to see the other presentations. I genuinely did not expect to win!”

Entrepreneurship minor The students in the Entrepreneurship minor worked hard to set up their own businesses. They then presented their businesses to the expert jury during the final. In the end, the jury selected Stijn, Sara and Chimene of Tio Eindhoven as the winner for their company Burnin’ Water. They got to take home a cheque for €500!

Event week In the beautiful Koninklijk Theater Tuschinski second year students of the Hotel and Event Management and Schoevers Executive Office Management programmes have been assigned the exciting task of putting together an event for football club De Graafschap. The purpose of the event is to thank the club’s supporters in the wake of the COVID pandemic. The winners received VIP tickets to the 2023 Golden Giraffe Event Awards!

Stocks & Bonds The Stocks & Bonds final is divided into two groups: first-year International Business Management students and the students in the Stocks & Bonds minor.

The students are given 11 weeks to buy and sell stock shares. They did so using (a lot of) fake money – €100.000!

The idea is to choose their own strategy with the goal of using money to make money. The top five present their strategies to the jury in the Park Inn by Radisson Hotel in Amsterdam.

Loëlle is crowned winner among the first-year students.

The winner from the minor, Jasper, was in California working on his final thesis at the time of the final and attended the event virtually. Even if it’s the middle of the night where you are, the Stocks & Bonds final is worth missing out on a bit of sleep!

Student Company Envision a new product, conduct market research, draw up a business plan and launch your new company. That was the challenging task facing second-year students in the International Business Management programme during the Student Company project! On Monday 2 May, the finalists presented their ideas to an expert jury.

Evenly matched A variety of creative products and services took the stage during the exciting final round. The groups were evenly matched and, after deliberation, jury members Maries Dinaux (MijnSkillsPaspoort) and Henry Groeneveld (Atthis) had the honour of announcing the winners. Who will win the cheque and eternal glory?

And the winner is…

Tio Rotterdam! The campus seems to be on the right track, since its students from Rotterdam who took home all three cheques! The best idea was presented by Thomas, Rick and Jari, who came up with ‘Voetbalwerkt’, a service that amateur sports clubs can use to find trainers for their youth teams.

The jury was extremely enthusiastic about the social aspect of this service, as trainers are more than just trainers – they

also contribute to children’s development. What’s more, the Tio Rotterdam students have already secured multiple sponsors and are even ‘doing business’ with the football club RKV Westlandia. The jury’s comment: “Keep it up and expand your idea to all of the Netherlands!” •
