LESSON PLAN: Mobile Technology, Shopping For Food In Spanish LESSON PLAN: SHOPPING FOR FOOD IN SPANISH GOAL #1 INTERPERSONAL MODE: READING AND WRITING SL.PS1.IR.01 Identify some common words, symbols, phrases, and cognates from familiar material.

Objective 1.1 After a short instruction, verbal practice, and identifying house related vocabulary using a virtual assessment; students will correctly create 21 Digital Flash Cards using Spanish vocabulary for shopping.

Objective 1.2 After using an interactive on-line visual and audio presentation, warm up exercises, verbal practice, and identifying Shopping for food related vocabulary using a virtual assessment, students will correctly write down 10 house chores in Spanish using virtual animations through Toontastic.

GOAL # 2: INTERPERSONAL MODE: SPEAKING SL.PS1.IS.01 Use memorized words/signs, phrases, and expressions in everyday situations.

Objective 2.1 After an interactive on-line visual and audio practice, warm up exercises, verbal practice, identifying shopping related vocabulary using a virtual assessment, and virtual writing exercises, students will correctly pronounce 10 Shopping for food in Spanish phrases creating a virtual recording through Garage Band.

LESSON PLAN: Mobile Technology, Shopping For Food In Spanish writing exercises, students will correctly pronounce 10 Shopping for food in Spanish phrases creating a virtual film recording through iMovie.

Objective 2.3 After using an interactive on-line visual and audio presentation, warm up exercises, verbal practice, identifying vocabulary using a virtual assessment, and virtual writing exercises, students will correctly pronounce 10 Shopping for food in Spanish phrases interacting with people from 2 different Latin American countries through a social network called iTalkie.

Materials. iPads or iPhones Internet Signal Projector Procedure

A. ANTICIPATORY SET, MOTIVATION OR HOOK: (5 MINUTES) Have students watch a video of people going shopping in a day market in Spain, completely in Spanish.

B2. DIGITAL SPANISH FLASHCARDS.

(15 MINUTES)

Have students take out their iPads, and have them download the application FREE Spanish Audio FlashCards for iPad. Then, have students create 21 digital Flashcards, and practice the new vocabulary. Afterwards, have students work in pairs. First, student A will ask student B the correct English translation of his or her Spanish Shopping cards.

LESSON PLAN: Mobile Technology, Shopping For Food In Spanish Then, student B will ask student A the correct English translation of her or his digital Spanish Shopping Flash Cards. Students will rotate two times.

B3. SPANISH ANIMATED CARTOON (10 MINUTES) Have students work in pairs, use their iPads and download the free application for iPads Toontastic. Have students sign up for a free account. Have students create a short cartoon story using at least 10 Spanish Shopping words. Students need to choose either a Spanish or a Mexican voice for their characters so that the characters will pronounce each sentence with the proper Spanish pronunciation. After students are done with the animation, use the projector and have them share their cartoons with the class.

B4. RECORDING GARAGE BAND (15 MINUTES) Students need to create a short story using at list 10 words of Shopping For Food in Spanish. After students have finished writing their story, have them use their iPads and open the Garage Band Application. After students have practiced the pronunciation of their story that includes Shopping For Food vocabulary, have them record their story using Garage Band. Students can also record a song in the background if they choose to.

Afterwards, students need to create a MP3 file. Have students share their recording using iTunes and create a podcast using Talkshoe.

B5. SPANISH SHORT FILM (10 MINUTES) Have students create a short story that includes 2 to 3 characters, using at least 15 words of Shopping For Food in Spanish. Students may work individually, in pairs, or groups of three. Provide basic instructions on how to use iMovie. Then, have students record a short film in which they model they story that they have written. Students will say the

Students can record the videos using either iPhones or iPads. Play a sample video.

B6. SOCIAL NETWORKING FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGES, JOINING ITALKI (15 MINUTES) Have students use their iPads and sign up for an account at iTalki. Have students find two language partners from two different Latin American countries using iTalki and describe them. Students need to have at least two language partners and at least two conversations in Spanish using the video or voice communication option. Students need to join iTalki at least one a week for an hour for two weeks.

LESSON PLAN: Mobile Technology, Shopping For Food In Spanish 5. Meeting varying needs.

There are virtual writing, listening and speaking activities. There are also group activities. All students will work with a partner in order to ensure that everyone that has different reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities contributes to help their peers.

By having students work in a team creating a video, intellectually gifted students may have a different learning approach and may have the opportunity to help their peers ingroup activities. Creating pair activities may help the learning environment of the class.

Also, the inductive introduction of household chores using visual aids may help introduced new vocabulary to visual learners. If there are students that struggle taking notes, there are is no need of taking notes manually. The activity of working in pairs creating a video may help students that have ADHD, since I have noticed that some students with ADHD show high interest in-group activities. I have seen students that have been diagnosed with ADHD very engaged when working with other students. According to the multiple intelligences theory of Dr. Gardner, interpersonal experience is a way in which some learners can exceed. Certainly, I have seen that interpersonal experience is a positive experience for all students because it helps them to socialize with his peers, and helps them improve and practice Spanish pronunciation.

Assessment:

Informal: My informal assessment will consist of monitoring students progress on the responses to the creating of the Digital Flash Cards, Social networking and cartoon animation.

LESSON PLAN: Mobile Technology, Shopping For Food In Spanish Formal: My formal assessment will consist of a careful review of the responses of the audio recording and the short film created by the students. The responses of the assigned homework will demonstrate in which areas each student needs support.

Rationale

Creating an animation in Spanish helps students to review vocabulary and practice the lesson. Furthermore, it helps them develop creativity by creating a story in Spanish.

Creating an audio file in Spanish using Garage Band, allows students to learn how to use a valuable recording tool. A recording tool such as Garage Band, allows students to measure their progress in language learning. The teacher will also have access to recorded files that show in detail the progress of each student. The MP3 file allows the teacher to know in which areas students need support.

By creating a short film using iMovie in a group, students will have the opportunity to interact with each other using Spanish and be creative. Students will have to practice body language in order to better illustrate their Spanish story.

By joining to iTalkie, students will have the opportunity to get to know people from other countries and practice their Spanish in a verbal and a writen manner. Joining to iTalkie helps students develop their Digital Citizenship knowledge.

These lessons satisfy National Educational Teaching Standards. NETS are focused on six areas: a) Creativity and Innovation, b) Communication and Collaboration, c) Research and Information Fluency, d) Critical Thinking, e) Problem Solving and Decision Making, f) Digital Citizenship, and g) Technology Operations and Concepts.

Creativity and Innovation refers to students demonstrating creativity, constructive knowledge, using models and simulations in order to explore complex issues and systems. Students will demonstrate their creativity when creating a story using animations and creating a short film.

Communication and Collaboration is based on the idea that students need to use digital media and environments in order to communicate and work effectively. Students will communicate with each other using Tweeter and iTalkie.

Research and Information Fluency refers to students using digital tools in order to locate, organize, analyze information, process date and report results. Students will use Xtranormal, iTalkie, Myna and Avidemux. These applications play a big role in digital media.

Digital Citizenship is a very interesting concept that intends to have students understand human, cultural and societal issues related to technology and practice legal
