This Year's Capitola Art & Wine Poster Artist – Christina Sayers

Featured Poster: Valiant & Vibrant Village

Cristina Sayers, a Santa Cruz native raised in Aptos, Capitola, and Soquel, is this year’s Capitola Art & Wine Festival Poster Artist. A true child of the '80s surf era, Cristina found both inspiration and refuge in the sand at 38th Avenue, often sketching beachside with her notebook.

Her love of art began early, nurtured by her maternal grandmother, Gladys. Cristina's first creative wins came from local coloring contests, including a countywide Santa Cruz Metro drawing competition. Her prize—an oil paint set from Palace Art—ignited a lifelong passion for art.

Life’s path wasn’t traditional: independent at 15 and raising her first daughter, Cristina worked at Pizza My Heart and Nob Hill in Capitola while putting art on hold. In her 30s, with four children

and support from her husband Johnny and extended family, Cristina returned to art—developing her signature collage style during “coffee breaks” (a.k.a. nap time).

Her handmade, cut-and-paste collages are celebrated for their texture and storytelling. She’s been a Santa Cruz Open Studios artist since 2013 and has shown at local festivals including the Pleasure Point Street Fair and Capitola Art & Wine since 2016.

“Collage has always helped me tell stories through layers and fragments. Being chosen for this year’s festival poster is a true honor. I’m grateful for the nomination by Nicole Fischer and for the opportunity to celebrate art in such a valiant and vibrant village.” – Cristina Sayers

Coming Soon:

Color Me Capitola – Color with Me by the Sea, Cristina’s new adult coloring book inspired by her memories of Northside Beach, created from her original collage sketches.

Cheers to the Mermaid!

A little history: A mermaid adorned the very first Capitola Art & Wine Festival glass back in 1987, but she disappeared from the design soon after. In 2017, local artist Maia Negre brought her back for the festival’s 35th anniversary, reimagining the original logo and restoring the mermaid to her rightful place of honor.

To participate in wine tasting, you’ll need to purchase a 2025 Festival Glass ($20) and Tasting Tokens ($1 each), available at Glass & Token booths throughout the festival. Tastings range from 2 to 5 tokens depending on the wine.

Must be 21 or older to purchase glass, tokens, or to participate in wine tasting.

Gourmet Cuisine

Exploring the Festival is sure to work up an appetite—and there’s no shortage of delicious options. Capitola Village offers a wide variety of restaurants to suit every taste, from casual bites to fine coastal dining. Just steps away, the Festival Food Court features specialties from popular local food trucks, serving up fresh, flavorful fare all weekend long.

Whether you’re craving something sweet, savory, or somewhere in between, you’ll find plenty to satisfy.

Local Artisan Marketplace

Discover a curated selection of locally handcrafted goods at the Artisan Marketplace. A Message from the President

This year marks the seventh annual Capitola Beach Festival, and we are excited to celebrate the wonders of Capitola and its’ amazing community by honoring the cherished “Vacation Snapshots” we’ve created with family and friends over the years.

The Beach Festival will once again feature the traditional free activities Capitola has come to love, including the Sand Sculpture Competition, Horseshoe Tournament, Scavenger Hunt, Children’s Art and Chalk Art, and Rowboat Races. We’re also thrilled to continue the new Cornhole Tournament and Paddleboard Races.

Don’t miss the Saturday band performance and followed by the weekend’s highlight — the Lighted Nautical Parade on Soquel Creek! Come marvel at the spectacular lighted floats as they parade down the creek in a dazzling nighttime display.

In my sixth year as President, it is my great pleasure to lead this spirited group of energetic, community-minded volunteers who make this event possible. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Beach Festival’s Committee and all our Event Sponsors for their contributions and support in helping create this free, family-friendly weekend.

Come to the beach, have fun, make new friends, and create lifelong memories!

Be sure to check out our Capitola Beach Festival website and Instagram for updated event information.

Want to be part of the magic?

Share your fun “Vacation Snapshots” by signing up to build a float for the Nautical Parade — we provide the barge and building site; you bring your creativity, inspiration, lighting, good times, and memories!

Parade winners will also receive donations to the charity of their choice: • 1st Place: $1,000 • 2nd Place: $750 • 3rd Place: $500

If you are searching for the Fountain of Youth, look no further — volunteer with us! Volunteering keeps you young, active, and connected to the community. We are a fun and welcoming group, and we are always looking for new friends to join us.

We look forward to seeing you and your family at the Capitola Beach Festival as we create new memories for future “Vacation Snapshots.”

See you at the beach!

The Capitola Beach Festival Artist

Capitola Beach Festival has again selected artist Maia Negre to artistically represent the festival.

Serene and ethereal, in layers of translucent color, Maia Negre’s artwork defines with emotion, the beauty of water and light.

Her work communicates a striking and eloquent comprehension of the ocean, drawing from compositional references of personal experience and memory. She is inspired by surfing and time spent in and around water throughout Hawaii and California.

Born of Chinese and French descent, Maia is a first generation American. She resides in Santa Cruz, California and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Painting and a minor in business from San Jose State University.

She is an active participant in the annual Capitola Art & Wine Festival, a licensed

artist with Merge4socks, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and is one of Santa Cruz’s most beloved and popular artists.

In addition to the latest 2025 Beach Festival art, Maia’s work has graced a number of other Capitola events and local landmarks. In 2010 she was the lead-assistant to John Ton on the Capitola Wharf Road mural and later became an artist-partner on the mural’s lower extension in 2015.  In 2015, Maia was the Capitola Art and Wine Festival Poster artist.  In 2017, she redesigned the Mermaid Logo on the wine glass for the Capitola Art and Wine Festival, which is still used to this day.

The following year in 2018, she designed the very first 2018 Capitola Beach Festival Poster, and her art was featured again for the Capitola Beach Festival in 2023 and 2024.

When she’s not painting and running her art business, this gentle powerhouse can be found in the yoga studio, surfing, spending time with her family, or traveling to her favorite places.

Follow her upcoming shows, projects, and inspirations on Instagram at @maianegre. Or see more of her work on her website at shop.maianegre.com

Capitola commemorates Begonia Memories

Sixty-five years of memories have been made tangible through the recent creation and installation of a large sculpture, commemorating the Capitola Begonia Festival. It stands sentinel-like in proud prominence commanding the attention of passersby, with richly buffed metallic colors of red, orange, yellow, garnet and green. In further celebration, the sculpture is lit at night, with the colors subdued but still clear to see.

The project was approved by the Capitola Art and Cultural Commission after a “call to artists” and a thorough review of submittals. Geofrey Nelson, an accomplished local artist, received the project award, with enthusiasm. The work is entitled “Beguiling Begonias” and has in fact captured the attention of all those who have come to view and enjoy the sculpture, as well as those who have their own Begonia Festival memories.

The sculpture plaque reads: The Capitola Begonia Festival blossomed through the love and devotion of the growers and volunteers. With gratitude, we honor their legacy of community and connection. 1952-2017

The sculpture can be seen at the intersection of Cliff Drive, Stockton Ave. and Wharf Road.

Sand Sculpture Contest

Gather your family, friends and neighbors on Saturday, September 27th for the picture-perfect Sand Sculpture Contest at beautiful Capitola Beach. Use our theme: “Vacation Snapshots” as your artistic inspiration.

Registration starts at 10:00 AM and is free for participants in five categories: ages under 8, ages 9-14, one adult & one child, small

A Capitola tradition since 1971, this family-friendly competition invites sand sculptors of all ages and skill levels to showcase their creativity from the rock jetty to the new Capitola Wharf. Some tips include: your sculpture site cannot exceed 20x20 feet; only use natural materials found on the beach; bring tools and buckets; you can use forms but remove them before judging; keep your sand damp; keep an eye on the tide! Judging begins at 2:00 PM (you must be present to win).  Sponsored by Capitola Self Storage

Sandcastle Memories

The Capitola Beach Festival again presents its Scavenger Hunt where participants explore Capitola’s historical landmarks, history, and points of interest. Stop by our table at Esplanade Park on Saturday, September 27th, between Noon and 4PM, to begin your adventure.

You will receive a map of the village with Waystations marked out and answer simple questions about what you find as you learn about Capitola Village and the Capitola Beach Festival. Even those who have participated before will be able to discover new things as new questions are included. Last year the wharf reopened just in time to be featured in some of our questions.

One question from the 2024 Scavenger Hunt was:

At the top of the steps to the Upper Esplanade looking to the beach, you can often see this item? What is it? Did you find it?

• Just a log • A desk drawer • A safe • A car bumper

This event engages all age groups in actively exploring their surroundings. Younger children can join their parents, older kids and adults can team up with their friends, and husbands and wives may compete against each other to see who can finish first. Upon completion, and returning their maps, everyone will receive a small prize. It’s all in good fun and FREE!

Scavenger Hunt Cornhole Tournament

In 2022 the Beach Festival put decks on the beach, tossed out some beanbags, and the games began. The players encouraged us to formalize the games into a tournament. Stop by after 11:00 am on Saturday, September 27, at Capitola Beach. Look for the giant banner. Warm up – toss a few – and sign up for a bit of competition. We are still looking for some fun-loving volunteers to help pull this one off. Visit our website for details and drop us a note. It’s fun and free. Sponsor: Capitola Village Business Improvement Association

Paddleboard Races are Back

The 3rd Annual Capitola Beach Festival Paddleboard Race is BACK with even more action! Join us on Sunday, September 28 for this picturesque paddleboard race on a one-of-a-kind racecourse that takes competitors along the magnificent kelp forests of the beautiful Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The event features both long course and short course races, upright and prone, along with a variety of lifeguard style competitions. The fun kicks off on Capitola Beach at 8:00 am.

This all-day family-friendly event offers something for everyone. Even if you’re not there to race, you can enjoy the beach and hang out with a great group of stoked ocean lovers. The Capitola paddling community is awesome... come and be part of it! Please check capitolalabeachfestival.com to sign up and for additional information. Sponsored by Central Coast Watermen

Picture Perfect Lighted Nautical Parade

Capitola Beach Festival celebrates “Vacation Snapshots” with the Lighted Nautical Parade on Saturday, September 27th.

After a fun filled day of Festival activities, head over to Soquel Creek around dusk to enjoy the glimmering designs from our float builders. Visible from the lagoon, Stockton Bridge, and the creek path, these creative barges light up Capitola like no other time during the year. Add music and theatrics and you have a floating parade!

Float builders compete not only for cash awards for their favorite charities, they also lay claim to bragging rights for competing – and winning - in Capitola’s only floating parade! In 2018 Capitola Beach Festival’s light parades replaced the Begonia Festival’ flower parade when the begonia fields closed after 65 years.

Community participation is important to the Beach Festival’s success. You can decorate a float too. A limited number of barges are available. Form your own group and join the fun. What “Vacation Snapshot” memory would you create? Certainly, one that will not be forgotten.

Visit us at www: capitolabeachfestival.com.

2024 Nautical Parade Celebrated the Good Times

The 2024 Lighted Nautical Parade provided entertainment and surprises on chilly Soquel creek that evening. The parade’s Creek Marshals commenced the parade with their water dances in illuminated kayaks. Little did they know that they would later be providing light and towing service to stranded barges. No one expected parade participants jumping from their barges to solve an assortment of mishaps. There were some technical issues affecting power, propulsion, and sound – none of which dampened the celebration.

The float builders presented big dreams of rock bands, dancers, ukuleles, historical tales, a fountain of youth, and a song composed for and played during the parade – all this while maneuvering around unseen obstacles and coping with the tricky passing beneath the Stockton Bridge.

After the parade, the winners were announced (Capitola Museum first, Jewel Boxers second, Joyism third), and the judges and Creek Marshal went home. A lit barge continued playing rock music along the Creek.

Capitola Beach Festival Events 2025

Every Sunday morning, as the mist lifts off Monterey Bay and the seagulls begin their lazy glide over the shoreline, something magical happens beneath the Bandstand in the quaint seaside village of Capitola. Floating into the salty and sometimes misty air, a chorus of cheerful strums and voices come from 50-70 ukuleles and their players.

The Capitola Ukulele players have been filling hearts with joy and happiness for over 20 years. This group of musicians gathers without fail, rain or shine, to play songs from the 50’s,60’s and 70’s. Their songbooks include nearly 1,000 pages of music, from Elvis to the Beatles, from Motown classics to groovy beach tunes, every song is a trip down memory lane. It’s impossible not to get swept up in the spirit of the music.

Spectators crowd around the Bandstand and tap their feet and sing along. Children dance, sing and hula hoop while the ukulele’s bring joy and happiness to the group. Hula hooping is a favorite activity for young and old during the morning fun.

To watch them play is to be reminded of the simple power of music…the way it brings people together. For over two decades the Players have created more than music. They’ve built a tradition, a family, a community and a legacy of joy and happiness.

Come and hear them at the Capitola Beach Festival and you too may find yourself dancing, singing, and smiling with the rest of the crowd, caught up in the magic of the ukulele.

Top 4 Central Coast Activities

The Central Coast of California has a wealth of outdoor activities. From the magnificent redwood forests to world-class surf, there is an abundance of recreation for most all nature enthusiasts. Below are currently the most popular pursuits – all of which can be enjoyed nearly year round.

Surfing

The stretch of surf spanning from Carmel Beach to Ocean Beach offers some of the best surf not only in California, but arguably, the planet. World-class spots such as Steamer Lane and Mavericks dot the coastline. East Cliff, West Cliff, 3-Mile, 4-Mile, Waddell, Davenport, Año Nuevo, The Jetty at Half Moon Bay, Pacifica and Ocean Beach deliver up surf for all skill levels and produce rideable waves throughout the year.

Hiking

The magnificently beautiful landscape of California especially the Central Coast begs one to explore on foot. Our mountain ranges, coastal bluffs, redwood forests and endless beaches serve up any hikers appetite. Probably the best thing about hiking is all you need is a good pair of tennis shoes and the yearning for adventure. It's an activity you can do anytime of the year with anyone – anyone for me being my pup.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Stand-up Paddle Boarding (SUPping) has taken California by storm. An alternative to kayaking, it is relatively easy to learn and can be enjoyed on nearly any body of calm water be it lakes, rivers or the ocean. The more experienced SUPpers, usually with a surfing background, surf clean point break waves as the length of the board and the aid of the paddle make it easier to get into.

Biking

Whether your a road biker, mountain biker, cruiser or BMX rider, the Central Coast has the territory for all. The Santa Cruz mountains are lined with fire trails and single track good for mountain biking, BMX and cyclocross. Highway 1, Highway 9, The Empire Grade and Nisene offer challenging but exciting and fun road biking. The hardcore BMXers will want to check out the pump tracks: West Side Pump Track, Chanticleer and Harvey West.

53rd Annual Wharf to Wharf RAce

Sunday, July 27, 2025 – Start Time 8:30 am

Each year, on the fourth Sunday in July, thousands of runners from across America and around the globe return to Santa Cruz, California for the annual six-mile race to Capitola-by-the-Sea. First run in 1973 by a handful of locals, the Wharf to Wharf Race today enjoys a gourmet reputation in running circles worldwide. Its scenic, seaside setting, perfect weather, and festive beach party atmosphere make it a favorite of casual joggers and elite athletes alike. Limited to 16,000 runners, the race sells out each of its registration windows in a mere few hours. Locals have 3,000 reserved spots; qualifying returning runners get priority. Runners are thrilled just to get in!

The 2024 Wharf to Wharf Race is offered as a live event OR virtual. While many come for sun, fun and fitness reasons, serious athletes run to test their mettle against the best. The race draws an elite, international field. Runners know that a good showing at Wharf to Wharf is a guaranteed boost to their running career. The roll of past champions includes a number of former Olympians.

Widely acclaimed “The best little road race in California,” Wharf to Wharf is the biggest summer event of its kind on the West Coast and a boon to local business, annually infusing more than $8 million into the Santa Cruz County economy. It receives broad media attention, and is highlighted in all running industry polls and publications as one of the top races in America each year.

RACE HISTORY

The first Wharf to Wharf Race was run Saturday morning July 28, 1973. It was not the main event of the day, just one of a number of festivities scheduled by the City of Capitola’s Heritage Days Committee organized by Jim Reding and Wayne Fontes to celebrate the dedication of Camp Capitola’s Superintendent’s Office, as a California State Historical Landmark. Wayne Fontes chaired the Race Committee and Soquel High School track coach Ken Thomas served as Race Director. The $200 race budget was underwritten by the City of Capitola.

The race was a pretty casual affair starting at the Santa Cruz Wharf and winding its way through coastal neighborhoods to Capitola Village, some six miles to the south. It did not run without incident. As the race leaders approached the Village, they were inadvertently misdirected onto Capitola's Wharf, rather than to the Esplanade where the finish line was actually located. After some discussion, race officials declared Stanford’s Jack Bellah the winner and duly awarded him a classic plaque proclaiming him Champion of the “WARF TO WARF” Race! These misadventures notwithstanding, the race was considered a grand success by the 273 participants who ran.

When they clamored for a rerun the following year, the organizing committee obliged and the race began a life of its own. Through the '70s the race grew, riding the wave of the running boom that swept the nation. Numbers doubled each year into the '80s before peaking at around 3,700 runners in 1983. At that point the leadership took a more proactive role in its promotion and administration. In the fall of that year, race representatives were dispatched to the First Annual Roadrace Management Convention in Washington DC to see what they could learn. The knowledge they brought back led to many changes in the face and future of the race, not the least of which was introducing a commercial sponsorship program, which facilitated the addition of attractive new features and expanded the event's financial horizons. More than 6,000 runners answered the starter’s call in 1984.

The race is on a roll!

The Race is produced and administered by Wharf to Wharf Race Inc., a California nonprofit corporation chartered to promote running as a means to health and fitness. Toward this mission, the Race has, since its inception, contributed more than $6 million to Santa Cruz County youth sports programs in general and the running community in particular.

Homeowners

Are Using This Revolutionary New Device to Cut Power

Bills and Stay Prepared for Outages

New Off-Grid Power Solution Helps Homeowners Keep the Lights On—Without Relying on the Grid

As electricity costs continue to rise and severe weather wreaks havoc on the power grid, homeowners across the country are turning to a new solution to both cut their electricity bills and make sure they’re never left in the dark.

Meet the Grid Doctor 3300 Solar Generator w/ EMP Intercept Technology—a cutting-edge, silent, and fume-free backup power system that works anywhere the sun shines.

It’s the first solar generator designed to withstand a true worst-case scenario – an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) event. And while preparing for disasters is one of its main benefits, it’s also incredibly useful for everyday life.

A Smarter, Safer Power Solution

Delivering over 3,300 watts of clean, silent electricity, the Grid Doctor 3300 can run refrigerators, medical devices, power tools, and even space heaters—without a single drop of fuel.

To learn more about how to get your own Grid Doctor 3300 Solar Generator, scan the QR code below, visit or call:

For decades, backup generators meant dealing with loud, gas-guzzling machines that broke down and needed constant refueling. But the Grid Doctor 3300 is different. It operates silently, produces zero emissions, and is virtually maintenance-free

Best of all, it doesn’t just provide backup power—it helps homeowners reduce their energy bills, too. By harnessing free energy from the sun using the included 200-watt solar panel, families can generate their own electricity, offsetting costly energy bills while staying prepared for power outages.

The Best Time to Prepare is Now

The Grid Doctor 3300 is already in thousands of homes across America, helping families stay safe, independent, and prepared.

Santa Cruz County Fair

The Santa Cruz County Fair is bursting with fun and food, animals and entertainment, people and possibilities! Everyone who comes to the Fair is our special guest… which is why the 2025 theme is so perfect: “Hay Bales, Piggy Tales & Ewe!”

Let’s start with entertainment! For the second year in a row, the Fair will feature a drone show. Each night of the five-day Fair, “Skye Dreams” will amaze fairgoers with 200 drones dancing in the sky above the fairgrounds. It’s an artistic and high-tech experience!

Live shows this year include, RED – A Taylor Swift Tribute, The White Album Ensemble, The Outlaw Mariachi, FMX Ramp-Age, Pro Wrestling Revolution, Escaramusa El Centenario Charra Show with Lola Montes and Los Dinnos. The Fair also hosts a carnival midway, magic shows, kids’ shows, a horse show, tractor parades and roving entertainment. Plus, all the savory and sweet fair treats you only get once a year… from funnel cakes and cinnamon rolls to fried artichokes and BBQ kabobs.

In the shadow of California’s Silicon Valley, nestled in the agriculturally rich Pajaro Valley, the Santa Cruz County Fair is a destination event. It’s known as one of the last old-fashioned community fairs. The annual event attracts some 65,000 people. Fairgoers flock to the sprawling, yet cozy, venue to experience the best of what their friends and neighbors have to offer in dozens of categories. Those categories include agriculture, horticulture, livestock, poultry, home arts, amateur wines, fine arts, LEGOs, poetry, youth displays, handspun/handwoven crafts, quilting, photography, floriculture, collections and more!

In 2023 and 2024, readers of the Santa Cruz Sentinel voted the Fair as the Best Annual Event in Santa Cruz County. There wouldn’t be a Fair without the Fairgrounds – and there wouldn’t be fairgrounds without The Foundation.

The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c (3) charitable organization, founded in 2002 by a group of dedicated Fair supporters determined to preserve our fairgrounds and the vital communityeventsheldthere.

Our motto: Funding Your Fairgrounds’ Future.

Thanks to generous support from the community, The Foundation has invested nearly $4.5 million in capital improvements over the last 23 years. These investments have helped ensure the longterm vitality of the Santa Cruz County Fair.

Projects funded by the Foundation include:

• Creation of a full-service RV Park

• Renovations to the Maintenance Building, Crosetti Building, and Grandstands

• Construction of a new storage facility

• Major water system upgrades across the fairgrounds

• And currently underway: kitchen and restroom additions in Heritage Hall

“Our Fairgrounds brings us all together,” said the late Diane Porter Cooley.

Throughout the year, the fairgrounds offer a unique venue for some 350 events held by community groups, businesses, and families. It also serves as an emergency shelter in times of disaster and a campground for travelers. The fairgrounds feature full RV hookups, restrooms and a picnic area.

The fairgrounds are also home to a 1/4-mile dirt racetrack facility, the historic Rodgers House and the Agricultural History Project. The Project is a nostalgic collection of equipment, tools, exhibits, tractors and buggies. Kids can drive a tractor and visitors can learn all about farming—both now in the olden days. In December, the fairgrounds’ bright and colorful Holiday Lights display has quickly become a must-see event of the holiday season. For more information, please visit santacruzcountyfair.com.

We’ll see you at the 2025 Fair … where it’s all about Hay Bales, Piggy Tales & Ewe!

Capitola As Seen Through Historic Postcards “Having a Wonderful Time Wish You Were Here”

Before the era of personal cell phones, the picture or view postcard was how most people shared scenes from their vacation destinations with family and friends. Though the first postcards date back to 1860s, the heyday of the picture postcard was 1900 to 1920 with up to one billion postcards mailed annually in the U.S. alone. Postcards were cheap and convenient to send during this period, usually costing just one cent to mail.

The dramatic rise in the popularity of postcards was attributed to not only an increase in vacation travel but also the growing pastime of postcard collecting, known as deltiology. So, it is little wonder that thousands of postcards featuring the natural beauty and resort amenities of Capitola-by-the-Sea made their way across the nation.

Color souvenir postcards were not produced on a large scale until the World’s Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893. Postcard manufacturers began sending their black and white photographs to expert lithographers in India and Italy, who with their artistic license, used vibrant, and sometimes creative color combinations for the same postcard image.

Starting in 1903“real photo” postcards grew in popularity with the premier of Kodak’s “postcard camera.” The specialized camera allowed the public to take photographs and have them printed on postcard backs, complete with a place for postage. A major change in postcard design took place in 1907 when Congress allowed privately produced postcards to bear messages on the left half of the card’s back. Divided-back postcards, permitted for the first time, both the address and a message to be placed on the same side of the card, reserving the front of the card entirely for an image.

Starting in 1913, some postcards began featuring a white border since printing a large sheet of cards could be more easily trimmed without marring images when cut. And the new style also made postcards less expensive to manufacture. Though German printers initially dominated the postcard market, by World War I, American printers supplied most of the postcards used in the United States. Most American made postcards were not of the same high quality as that of German manufacturers, and the lowered quality led to a diminishing interest in using and collecting postcards.

For over 150 years, the postcard served as personal message, vacation souvenir, advertising medium, valued collectible, and family keepsake. Historic picture postcards are windows into our shared past. Today they are an invaluable source of local and family history, documenting people and places now gone. In many cases, postcards are also seen as works of art.

Despite the digital age and instant communication, the postcard endures, especially as a vacation tradition. Receiving a handwritten postcard still represents something special and connects us to our past in a tangible way.

There are many well-known and beloved historic postcards of Capitola: canoers drifting down Soquel Creek beneath the railroad trestle, bikini clad beachgoers sunning themselves on the sands of Capitola Beach, Begonia Festival floats parading under the Stockton Avenue Bridge, a streetcar headed past the Six Sisters toward the Grand Hotel Capitola, sailboats anchored off Capitola Wharf, colorful begonia nurseries, the famed Shadowbrook restaurant, and families lounging under umbrellas around the lagoon. Here are a few Capitola postcards with a little background history.

Captions:

A. An often-reproduced postcard of Capitola shows the once popular locale known as Lover’s Lane. The tree lined walk at the edge of Depot Hill was a favorite rendezvous for spooning couples in the early 1900s. This postcard preserves a view of the now lost site. Most of Lover’s Lane has fallen into

the ocean, the victim of decades of cliff erosion. Postcard from the Deasy Collection, Capitola Historical Museum.

B. This postcard of the Hotel Capitola (1895-1929) shows beachgoers on the sand in street clothes and hats. It also shows a rope and set of poles leading from the beach into the surf. The rope was used by those who braved the waves to indulge in surf bathing. The rope was used as a handhold to prevent bathers from being toppled by incoming waves. Surf bathing, an 18th century medicinal idea imported from England, was one of the most popular pastimes during a visit to Capitola. It was thought that wading in saltwater stimulated one’s circulation and was a cure for a wide variety of ailments from scurvy to melancholy. Postcard from the Capitola Historical Museum.

C. This birds-eye view of Capitola, post marked August 1915, contains the message “Morning Dear Folks I am sending you a picture of our house. It is the last house on the right side when you go to the wharf. Be sure to come and see us. With love, Annie.” In this sepia tone image, an “X” identifies Annie’s house along Soquel Creek on the village side of the streetcar bridge (the beginning of the Riverview path today). Boat and bath houses line Ocean Front Avenue (today’s Esplanade) and the Six Sisters can be seen on the way to the 1895 Queen Anne style, Grand Hotel Capitola, situated at the base of the eastern bluff (now Depot Hill). Note the Six Sisters originally abutted the street. When the street was relocated seaward and renamed by Henry Allen Rispin in 1920, the owners smartly purchased the newly available land in front of their houses, thus the long lawns in front of the Six Sisters you see along the Esplanade today. Postcard from the Capitola Historical Museum.

D. The black and white postcard of Capitola Lagoon prominently feature the “Chute the Chute,” a wildly popular recreational slide first constructed in the early 1900s. The chute, which changed location and configuration over the years, allowed swimmers to climb a ladder or stairway to the top and then slide joyfully into the lagoon, hopefully missing any canoers who foolishly strayed in too close. To the right can be seen portions of resort concessions (today’s location of beachside restaurants) and beyond the Model T Fords parked along the Esplanade is a glimpse of the Grand Hotel Capitola, which burned in December 1929. Postcard from the Capitola Historical Museum.

E. This postcard shows an early Capitola street scene. Three young boys ride donkeys down the palm tree lined but still unpaved Esplanade, alongside early automobiles. Streetcar tracks can still be seen. The electric streetcar system linking Capitola to Santa Cruz, built in 1904 by the Union Traction Company, stopped running in 1924. The one-way fare from Santa Cruz to Capitola was 12¢. Note the young girl with a towel wrapped around her bathing costume. Modesty about being seen in a wet bathing costume, after surf bathing, was the rule of the day. Postcard courtesy of the van Zuiden Collection, Capitola Historical Museum.

F. This view of the VenetianCourt shows another popular pastime for visitors to Capitola, canoeing in the lagoon. Situated at the base of Capitola Wharf, the Venetian Court, stands upon the site of a mid-19th century Italian fishing village. The Venetian, built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style in 1924, was recognized in 1987 as part of an

Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. Due to its stucco architecture and vivid color scheme, the Venetian has become Capitola’s most iconic locale, although the bright paint jobs did not start until the early 1960s. Postcard from the Deasy Collection, Capitola Historical Museum.

G. Likely a privately made postcard mailed to San Francisco in July 1911, this is a photograph of three proud fishermen posing with their catches. They are showing off their bounty to several young boys and ladies along Lawn Way (today a National Historic Landmark District). The text on the back says “Dear Grandpa: We looked for you today. This is Charlieʼs catch yesterday. That big one weighted 15 lbs. Now be sure to come next week. Drop me a card & say you are coming. Laura.” At this time, Capitola was a popular spot for sports fishing. Note the American flags and bunting on the cottages, likely put up for a fourth of July celebration. Postcard from the Capitola Historical Museum.

Riva Fish House On the Santa Cruz Wharf

In 1981 we started with the idea of having the best fish market on the West Coast. We were on our way but a year or so later one of our regulars asked if we'd put some of our Bay Shrimp in a cup for him, which we did, and he dumped some red sauce on it. Actually, it looked pretty good.

That was the end of something, and the beginning of something else. We named our new restaurant in honor of a little fishing village on the Ligurian Coast of Italy: Riva Trigoso. It had been home for a number of early Italian immigrants who settled in Santa Cruz and worked on the Wharf.

Voted Santa Cruz's Best Restaurant and Best Seafood Restaurant, we offer something for everyone. Try our chowder, acclaimed fried-calamari, fish tacos, broiled oysters, fried zucchini, or killer crab melt featuring juicy tasty crab, seasoned to perfection, served on sourdough bread hand-made and baked to Riva's exacting specifications, with cheese of your choice. Good for body and mind! Wash that down with a craft beer or handmade cocktail. Complete your experience with some of our 12 flavors of delicious, creamy gelato.

Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery

Walk far enough out on the Santa Cruz Wharf and the land falls away, replaced by a sense of ocean and sky in all directions. On the wharf’s lower decks, sea lions bask in the sun and bellow contentedly at one another. Seagulls wheel in the sky or hop along the wharf railing, pestering meditative fishermen. To the west, surfers ride the glistening waves of world-famous Steamer Lane like an impossibly beautiful dream. It is out here, near the last bend in the wharf, that you will find Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery, Voted Best Restaurant on the Wharf, Best Outdoor Dining and Best Craft Cocktails in Santa Cruz, Sentinel Readers Choice, 2021.

Entering Makai is like being hit with a warm wave of pure tiki before swimming out into its ocean. It is a place of island melodies and intoxicating aromas. Tiki statues silently grin and howl from every nook and cranny. Plus, the bar rotates, making it arguably the coolest place to get a drink in the whole Monterey Bay region.

If you really need a vacation, but only have a few hours, we invite you to escape to Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery, the fully immersive tiki restaurant and bar on the Santa Cruz Wharf.
