WRINKLE AND THE SLEEP EFFECT! Beauty sleep isn’t just the stuff of fairy tales – according to research, how we sleep is key to helping prevent wrinkles and retaining youthful looks. It’s well know that a good night’s sleep is essential to feeling refreshed when the sun rises but it’s a lesser known fact that the way we sleep plays a part in how we age day to day. New research from mattress retailer, Ecosa found that as people age, they tend to move away from sleeping in positions such as on the back, stomach and freestyle (a variation in sleep position) in favour of sleeping on one’s side. The sleep position preference study which collected data from more than 730 Kiwis from around the country found that around a sixth (17%) preferred to sleep on their backs, a tenth (8%) slept on their
stomachs and a further quarter (27%) were freestyle sleepers. Sleep wrinkles typically form as we move around in our sleep and sleep with our faces down or pressed up against the pillow. Sleeping on a rough cotton surface can further irritate skin and compress the face for long hours at a time, resulting in wrinkles on the face and chest. It makes sense then that the position of the face when sleeping (one-third of the day!) is going to be a deal-breaker for one’s skin. Stomach or side sleepers create constant pressure on the face, which over time will produce deep, unwanted sleep lines on the forehead and cheeks.
“Researchers have suggested that the reason the side position preference increases with age is due to loss of flexibility of the spine and/or the extra effort required for breathing in the front position, says Mr Chan. “Side sleeping also helps to open our airways to allow for steady airflow to the lungs.
Typically, the loss of collagen and elasticity result in loss of skin volume. Applying repeated pressure (such as sleeping with the side of your face on a pillow) against the collagen will also trigger its breakdown, eventually leading to visible lines. Ecosa CEO Ringo Chan says understanding one’s sleep position is important as it can be associated with a wide range of health concerns – including premature wrinkles. He says while the reasons for our preferences in sleep position are not fully understood by scientists, a number of theories have been put forward.
“Lying on your back and assuming a neutral body position typically results in the least amount of strain on your head, neck and spine. “The New Zealand study results are in line with international data which showed one in every two adults prefer to sleep on their side, which correlated with an increase in age.”
