A Cockle Bay couple is counting its lucky stars after lightning struck its property, blasting the garden and blowing up two fuseboxes.

Ashley and wife Lorna (they asked not to publish their surname) and their dog have had to move out of the Trelawn Place house following the lightning strike on Monday at around 4.50pm.

Ashley said lightning struck the Norfolk pine on the property. The percussion from the strike was enough to blow out the neighbour’s windows.

“It blew the water feature out of the garden, tracked into the house and blew the fuse in the street. It took out our fuseboxes in the garage and downstairs – a cover was (blown out) and embedded in the gib (of the wall opposite),” he said.

A part of the bamboo fence, entwined with copper wire, was blown out too.

“I was working in the office – it was like a blue flash... it was three to five seconds,” said Ashley.

“The house filled with smoke – the smell of burning wires.” An electrician, power company Vector and an insurance company assessor were surveying the damage.

Giving Freddie a voice

right, wacky T-shirts will be on full display in the Stickland household next week in support of their little boy Freddie and Loud Shirt Day. When 8-month old Freddie was born, he was diagnosed with profound hearing loss and just three months ago he was fitted with cochlear implants.

After being blindsided by the diagnosis, Freddie’s parents, Mark and Amanda, say watching him giggle as he heard sound for the first time was an incredible experience. “[Cochlear implants] are not a cure for deafness but they allow him access to sound, and because of them he will learn to talk just like his hearing peers, something that

never would have been possible 40 years ago,” says Amanda.

While Freddie has a long road ahead of him with habilitation sessions to assist with achieving developmental skills, thanks to the Hearing House and the cochlear implants Freddie will live a “happy, normal, extraordinary life,” she says.

They say the team at The Hearing House have quickly become like family, and they are blown away with the support and kindness they offer every family they work with.

“When Freddie got switched on, which is what they call it when they turn on the implants, they had a switch on party for us. For them it’s another kid they have helped and they celebrate that,” says Mark.

The Hearing House relies heavily on donations to be able to offer deaf children and their families a range of

free audiology services and therapy.

The couple wants everyone to take part in Loud Shirt Day by dressing up in their brightest shirt to support and celebrate giving deaf kids a voice.

“Deaf kids can hear with support and this is a real success story where the government in years gone by have made decisions that have really set up a good infrastructure to support kids like Fred,” Mark says.

“But the Hearing House still needs public donations to be able to offer families the level of support that they do.”

eachers from schools as far away as Clevedon gathered at Howick College last week to celebrate the launch of the Howick Coast Kahui Ako Community of Learning (COL).

One of 51 Communities of Learning in Auckland, the Howick Coast COL is about schools working together to improve performance levels among all students.

The COL comprises eight local schools – Beachlands School, Botany Downs School, Brookby School, Clevedon School, Howick College, Howick Intermediate, Howick Primary and Maraetai Beach School.

Howick Coast COL Principal Julie Schumacher says principals and teachers from all schools will work together to find innovative ways to support students as they move through the education system.

“It’s about us being able to achieve something more than we can achieve on our own,” she says.

All animals are judged for ‘care and condition’. Calves are judged for leading, while lambs, piglets and kid goats for calling; chickens and ducklings for perching.

The idea behind Ag Day which is an integral special character of a school in a rural setting is to inculcate values and teach young ones how to be responsible and care for the well being of other creatures beside themselves.

“You can bathe goats but not lambs because of the oil in their fleece,” says Cerys knowledgably.

hey like being carried around and are not that heavy, says 11-yearold Cerys Hasler about her threeweek-old pet lamb that follows her to school every day.

The Year 6 Brookby Primary School student informs that her pet lamb Nibbles likes spending time with other animals at the school creche where piglets co-exist with lambs and kid goats.

“Nibbles enjoys digging out the mud and getting dirty with them,” says the newbie at Brookby School.

Cerys’ younger brother Case is also carrying Buddy, a three-week old lamb around the school grounds.

t’s not every day that the Prime Minister, Bill English taps you on the shoulder and wants to know how you are doing.

There was a mix of emotion as people at the Botany Town Centre food court looked startled and excited as Mr English casually introduced himself to diners.

He chatted, laughed, posed for selfies, signed autographs and even bent down to tie a three-year-old boy’s shoe laces.

Mr English may not seem a natural in front of the camera but he certainly was a hero with kids and their parents, young adults and seniors who were thrilled as the PM stopped by to enquire about their families and schools and answer questions.

The Times asked Mr English which energy pills he took to pack in 50 hours a day.

Bringing disability and politics together

By FARIDA MASTER Women in New Zealand started voting 124 years ago but it’s been only three years since Telephone Voting was introduced for the visually impaired or for those with other physical disabilities.

“We all have the right to a secret

vote, so if you can’t mark the paper without assistance, you can vote by telephone which was introduced last election,” says Ezekiel Robson as he familiarises a group of around 30 students with varying disabilities at the Sommerville Special School.

The school caters for 200

special needs students and 34 classes that includes satellite classes in different local schools like Riverhills School, Edgewater College and Howick Intermediate has recently relocated to Pakuranga.

National wins... but not by much T

he National Party has swept to victory nudging Labour aside and in so doing casting NZ First into oblivion.

In an ‘official’ count following Kids Voting at Owairoa Primary School in Howick, National dominated in both the Botany and Pakuranga electorates taking 46 per cent and 44 per cent of the party vote respectively.

The students’ votes saw Labour claim 35 per cent of the party vote in Botany (Greens 10%, Maori 4%, NZ First and others 1% each) and 37 per cent in the Pakuranga electorate (Greens 9%, Maori 5%, NZ First 2%).

As for candidates, National Party ruled again with Simeon Brown taking the Pakuranga electorate vote with 42 per cent ahead of Labour’s Barry Kirker

“We held the Kids Voting under strict conditions imposed by the Owairoa Primary Returning Officers,” said principal Alan McIntyre.

“The students have enjoyed the experience and discussed the political process and many of the different party policies before coming to a decision.

“It was fun to hear why different students voted for the different candidates.

“They were quite adamant about their choices with a number following their family voting patterns with some students taking a different view and voting for a party that was more relevant for them.”

Principal goes to jail to help school Principal Alan McIntyre will find himself behind bars at this year’s Owairoa Primary School Gala.

In the new ‘Jail Bail’ attraction, built by MIT, Mr McIntyre and other members of staff will be locked up and only released when they have raised enough money.

“It’s a special vote. If you have anxiety issues and are not comfortable being around people, you could ask someone close to you or a family member to pick up the voting paper for you.

“The support person can go to a voting place with your verbal permission and collect the voting paper for those who are unable to visit a public place. You can pick it up from anywhere in the country and drop it back to any polling booth before September 23.”

Fighting for equal opportunities, Mr Robson says that he contested the Manurewa Local Board elections in 2016 in order to “educate the politicians that people with disability matter”.

Interestingly he says that it was Times Newspapers that had asked the readers to come up with possible questions for previous Mayoral elections that proved to be a turning point for him.

“I was really thrilled when my question about how responsive they are to disability issues was selected to be asked at an election debate.

“But sadly none of the candidates had any idea about what they would do. Except one, who was really vague about it.”

He says that according to Stats NZ, in 2013, 24 per cent of the New Zealand population identified as disabled, a total of 1.1 million people.

“If we all voted for one party, they would be government and would not need any coalition partners,” he says regarding the power of the disabled voting block.

hen director Alex Gleed described Howick Little Theatre’s latest play as a psychological thriller with lots of subtext, I wondered if I’d be able to keep up.

I tend to be that person who’s constantly asking questions through movies and sometimes I find my mind wandering – especially after a long day at work.

But I needn’t have worried. From the moment the lights dimmed on Wednesday night, I was enthralled. The set, the acting, the storyline – it all worked together to create a masterpiece and I loved every moment of it. Dial M for Murder revolves around Tony Wendice (David Steadman) and his wife, Sheila (Anna Baird). It’s a bit of a marriage of convenience for Tony, an ex-professional tennis player who is really only after his wife’s money. After discovering Sheila may be about to leave him for another man – and thus removing all hopes

of his claim to fortune – Tony hatches a cunning plan to have her killed, which, of course, goes hilariously wrong.

However, a good director can only do so much without a stellar cast to direct and luckily this play had both.

The cast was small but outstanding. From the moment Tony walked on stage, I instantly hated the arrogance of the character – never before have I felt such a strong energy

from an actor’s entrance in a live theatre performance and boy was I impressed.

This arrogance contrasted nicely with Baird’s innocent portrayal of Sheila, who of course comes out worse off after her husband’s failed murder plot of which she remains blissfully unaware. With so many strong character personalities in the play, Baird did a great job of playing the submissive, clueless wife caught up in

her husband’s evil plot.

Richard De Luca holds the role of Sheila’s male companion, Max Halliday, a renowned crime writer whose literary experience ends up foiling Tony’s last ditch attempt at getting his hands on Sheila’s money. De Luca pulled off the unlikely hero of a character without a hitch.

With so much tension in the plot there was a desperate need for comic relief which came frequently in the form of Captain Lesgate (Arthur Young) in the first half of the play and Chief Inspector Hubbard in the second (easily my favourite character and played

by Barrie Graham).

One of the most common postural problems is Forward Head Posture (FHP). Since we live in a forward facing world, the repetitive use of computers, TV, video games, trauma and even backpacks have forced the body to adapt to a forward head posture.

Repetitive movements in a certain direction will strengthen nerve and muscle pathways to move that way more readily and cause postural changes over time. It is the repetition of forward head movements combined with poor postures and/or trauma that causes the body to adapt to a Forward Head Posture.

‘Text neck’ can also be a contributor of FHP. This is the term used to describe the injuries and pain sustained from looking down at mobile phones or other devices for too long. ‘Text neck’ does not occur only from texting, looking down to read also causes this. The symptoms associated with text neck include chronic headaches, upper back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, and increased curvature of the spine.

Ideally the head should sit directly on the neck and shoulders, like a golf ball

sits on a tee. The weight of the head is more like a bowling ball than a golf ball, so holding it forward, out of alignment, puts a strain on your neck and upper back muscles.

The result can be muscle fatigue, an aching neck, pain, burning sensations, jaw tension, headaches and bite problems.

When spinal tissues are subjected to a significant load for sustained periods of time, they deform and undergo remodelling changes that could become permanent.

Overtime FHP has been shown to flatten the normal neck curve, resulting in disc compression and damage, and early arthritis of the spine.

Remember, long standing postural problems like FHP will cause spine and nerve damage, and symptoms rarely present early on but rather after several months or years.

make and while Ryu was excited throughout the process, she had no thought that she’d created something truly special.

“Two classmates convinced me to enter but I wasn’t keen. When they told me, they thought I could win I laughed, then I said I’d enter if everyone else did,” Ryu says.

As a result of the students’ pact, there were seven finalists in the Year 3 and 4 category and five came from the same school as Ryu. She says of her win, “I was quite shocked. I really didn’t expect it. I was happy enough to be a finalist and have an excuse to go to Sydney. It didn’t sink in properly until the next day.”

As well as winning glory at the competition that’s held as part of the International Jewellery Fair 2017, Ryu took home A$2500 ($2773) in prize money.

It’s the intangible spinoffs from her award are having the most impact on her undeniable talent.

Carol Turner an Occupational Therapist at HBH Senior Living (previously called Howick Baptist Healthcare) says that Occupational Therapy is an art and science of enabling engagement in everyday living through occupation.

News bins: 600 calls A

uckland Council is pleased with the first week’s use of the new rubbish bins.

Waste Enterprises & Refuse Manager Terry Coe said the council has received around 600 calls from residents in the area.

“We’ve seen a great response from residents in parts of east and south Auckland – most people have already changed from bags to bins,” he said.

“More than 108,000 homes put their new rubbish bin out for the first time a fortnight ago...in the first week only 10 per cent (of householders’) bags were put out on the kerb and this week, less than 5 per cent “We understand this is a big change for some, particularly large families, so we’ve put a few things in place to support residents.

Most of the calls relate to people upgrading from the standard 120 litre wheelie bin to the larger 240L litre bin. Some people had not received their new bins.

“Not many are going missing,” he said.

“What usually happens is someone else takes it in...most

Kindy Sunflower Project back to spark a passion for gardening An amazing 11,612 kindy kids around New Zealand – including many local children - will be cultivating their gardening skills whilst competing with other kindergartens in their region to grow the tallest sunflower or widest sunflower head.

The 2017 Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens Project runs until Wednesday December 6, with winners announced on December 8.

There are 220 kindergartens taking part in the project through 10 kindergarten associations.

This year there are 66 kindergartens participating throughout Auckland and each has been sent a Daltons starter pack with everything the children need to grow their own Kings Seeds Skyscraper sunflowers, which have the potential to grow up to 4 metres high.

The tallest sunflower ever grown in the project’s history was a massive 3.12 metres tall, and a previous sunflower grew through the roof of a kindergarten deck, much to the delight of the little gardeners.

Local participants include Botany Downs Kindergarten, Bucklands Beach Kindergarten, Highland Park Kindergarten, Howick Kindergarten, KiNZ East Tamaki, KiNZ Mission Heights, Pigeon Mountain Kindergarten and Somerville Kindergarten.

Highland Park Kindergarten teacher Brittany Oldfield said: “Our children have had a long association with gardening and with Daltons as this is something that we as a kindergarten have always participated in.

A well-known face around East Auckland James Brownlie has worked as a chiropractor in Pakuranga since July 1971 and definitely has no retirement plans at this stage.

He grew up in an Auckland farming family and did his secondary school years at Otahuhu College where he was Head Prefect. He went on to complete a Science Degree at Massey University in Palmerston North.

Mr Brownlie’s focus has always been on good health care and sports. Having the distinction of being Auckland Secondary Schools’ sprint champion in the 100m and 200m events, while at Massey University James won a prestigious “Blue” Award – the highest sporting accolade given to tertiary students.

With a special interest in athletics and rugby, he is now a Life Member of the Grammar Tech Rugby Club – a club he has supported for many years.

“I read a great deal about chiropractic treatment and it fascinated me as a drugless healing system,” he says.

The aim of this treatment is for people to reach optimum health through correction of the spine and nervous system. Chiropractors provide specific adjustments so the body can operate at full potential.

“In the 1960s, I travelled to the US where I did my studies at the Palmer College in Iowa. I then practiced for a year in Michigan, but I didn’t enjoy the severity of winter there and was missing family so returned to live in Howick in 1970,” Mr Brownlie explains.

He then established a business based at the corner of Glenmore and Pakuranga Roads. In the early 90s, Mr Brownlie bought the house where his business is now based and had it moved to the corner of Gossamer Drive and Pakuranga Highway. Surrounded by well-tended cottage gardens, this building was an attractive addition on the busy Pakuranga Highway and has become a local landmark.

James has five children with his youngest daughter now attending university in the city. “They have all grown up and attended local schools here,” he says.

Arguably one of the longest-serving professionals in the district, he has witnessed huge changes since he first set up. As well as the massive development of areas which were formerly farmland, he has seen huge changes in his working life with the introduction of new computer technol-

ogy. “For 22 years, I developed my own X-rays. That used to take about 30 minutes but now I outsource these and have a digital image in a matter of minutes,” he says. “The improvement in imaging makes it much easier to identify specific problems.”

But, he is not impressed with the increasing rate of obesity, with all the subsequent health problems such as diabetes and kidney disorders.

“Since the 70s, the New Zealand diet has deteriorated with the use of so much processed food – packed with additives.

We are now in the midst of an obesity epidemic.”

Mr Brownlie doesn’t sprint or run marathons as he used to but his interest in sports and health care remains strong.

Local schools impress at AIMS Games Local schools performed strongly at the Anchor AIMS (Association of Intermediate and Middle Schools) Games held in Tauranga last week.

The AIMS Games is an international sporting event – often compared to the Commonwealth Games for 11, 12 and 13 year olds – held in the Bay of Plenty region.

More than 10,000 students from 303 schools competed in the event in a variety of individual and team sports.

Bucklands Beach Intermediate came in at first place on the Medal Table with 3 cups and 37 medals including 18 gold, 9 silver and 10 bronze.

It was ninth time lucky for BBI, who has entered the Games for the last eight year and finished in the top three multiple times but only making it to the top place for this year.

BBI Director of Sports, Stacey Knowles said while first place is an incredible achievement, it’s important to remember what the Games are really about.

“It’s about playing with great sportsmanship – being appreciative of others, offering support, being proud of our school, picking yourself up when the going gets tough, perservering, showing resilience and being proud of achieving your own personal goals.”

The Breast Cancer Foundation is non-government funded charity, so the money they receive comes from donations and fundraising events like Pink Ribbon Breakfasts. Singh says that if by hosting a breakfast she can help the Breast Cancer Foundation continuing researching and working towards a cure for Breast cancer, she’s all for it.

“It’s a special feeling knowing that something as simple as breakfast on a Sunday with friends and strangers can lead to someone being persuaded into getting a breast screen.”

This year’s event is on October 15, and all the proceeds will go to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

Those who attend will be served breakfast, goodie bags, a breast cancer information pack and a pink ribbon to wear during the month of October.

“MP: Nasty, vicious attacks on Local Board” – so the headline read in the H&P Times, September 14.

What concerns me is the political spin Jami-Lee Ross is putting on events that lead to his wife’s abrupt resignation from the Local Board.

There is no doubt in my mind that he should have kept more than an arm’s length from the affairs of the Local Board, given his wife’s involvement. While he contends it was his duty as an MP to get involved, others could equally consider it a conflict of interest.

What he has not said is the group he pulled together under the Vision and Voice group were the core of the so-called dysfunctionals, and included the-then chair of the Board, David Collings, who he and others, I assume, secretly hoped to depose.

When the plot failed it cost us ratepayers $100k.

In response to Jami-Lee Ross’ comments (Times, September 15), I suggest that his wife acted like a spoilt brat!

He says, “she felt the board was dysfunctional and she felt, as a group of them did, that they would try and change the leadership of the board from within”!

Well, if her ideal result was to change the leadership from within, why did she not stay and make the effort?

She did not get her own way (to be chairman), so she cried foul and walked away, costing ratepayers a significant sum for a byelection.

That is not what I would call being community-minded!

I agree with Gary Hollis (H&P Times, September 7) that ferries are a more efficient means of public transport for Howickians.

Ever since I moved to Howick almost 40 years ago, the issue of rebuilding the wharf on Howick Beach has been a topic of discussion.

Multiple times the relevant local authorities (now Howick Local Board) have been asked to get a feasibility study done on whether building a wharf would be advisable for Howick. With continuing problems of roading overload and the limited options of public transport from Howick, it is surely time that the Howick wharf and ferry option was fully investigated.

For too long the people of Howick have been denied the knowledge of what would actually (and factually) be involved in the reinstatement of the wharf and provision of a ferry service. Let’s have a proper investigation and get the facts settled so a realistic debate can be had on the merits and pit falls.

It is frustrating to watch the Pine Harbour Ferries going past every hour or so, but having to either take a bus or drive to the Half Moon Bay terminal to catch a ferry.

From my home it’s two buses to the ferry terminal and if the connector is late, the ferry does not wait. And if I drive, parking – like at most of Auckland’s transport hubs – is atrocious.

The area is also called Gangland where gangs rule by violence ,drugs and guns and are using the kids from as young as 10-years-old to deliver and sell their drugs.

We are keeping these kids On the other hand, I would hate to see any unique sea life destroyed, if it exists in this location but wonder what this might be and whether the growing populations needs outweigh this.

The Howick Local Board needs to finally front up to this very important local issue and provide the funding for the feasibility study.

Give us a way forward or at least enable “real” transport planning to occur based on fact, not vested interest.

Rubbish day blues

It doesn’t look like the new rubbish collection system got off to a very good start last week (week ending September 3).

Long before the arrival of the pick-up truck, many of the new lightweight bins in our area were toppled over – some of them with the contents strewn out onto footpaths and in the gutters. Some bins were so full that the lids could not be shut, which is a no-no.

There were also countless numbers of rubbish bags that were not placed in the new bins – another no-no. When the bins were finally emptied, many of them were blown over and ended up on footpaths and in the gutters. Out of those left standing, a large minority got

busy by doing all kinds of things especially sports.

A special thank you to Central United and Fencibles United for making this project possible.

The new and used boots may seem a small gesture but to the children of Lavender Hill, this enables them to play the sport they love.

Re TV news Tuesday night, the new justice and emergency services centre in Christchurch is just what Botany needs.

Something I have been suggesting for years, and it always seems to fall on deaf ears.

Botany is probably the fastestgrowing area in NZ and, yes, we have a new police station but where is our ambulance and fire service? Miles away!

It takes just a few minutes for an accident or a heart attack victim to die waiting for the ambulance to arrive from Pakuranga or Middlemore, and our fire service is way over in Otara right on the time limit for a response from a fire appliance to arrive.

I hope we don’t pay the ultimate price for this lack of foresight.

amed after a Maori chief, Te Haua Taua is a familiar face in the Howick, Pakuranga and Botany areas as he hobnobs with ministers, Members of Parliament, party candidates, supporters and is spotted in photographs sitting next to Prime Minister Bill English.

On the campaign bus with deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett singing Macarena, the morning after, he travels from Epsom to Mangere and Otara Farmers Markets and then to Papakura, Manukau and Botany.

The day ends at the Pakuranga Night Market campaigning with National Party candidate for Pakuranga, Simeon Brown.

For a 16-year-old who doesn’t drive, Te Haua has a lot on his plate.

He’s the secretary for the Manukau East Council of Social Services (MECOSS), an active member of the Pakuranga electorate team, on the youth wing of New Zealand National Party, a member of Red Cross Service Council, a part of Pakuranga Interact and on the Maori Council at Pakuranga College.

Mature beyond his years, Te Haua is now standing as student representative for the Pakuranga College Board of Trustees elections.

he chairperson of the Howick Local Board, David Collings, has responded to comments made by MP for Botany Jami-Lee Ross at a Meet the Candidates meeting in Botany last week, calling them “disappointing.”

The question, directed to Ross at the meeting, asked: “Reflecting on the difficulties of your involvement in recent local government electioneering, do you think it was wise for a member of parliament to be so involved in local government election matters? Any regrets and learnings?”

Lucy Schwaner, who is married to Ross, walked out of the inauguration ceremony after losing her bid for chairperson to David Collings by 5 votes to 4. Two of the board’s members stood at the ceremony and declared they had been bullied and approached to vote for Schwaner.

Ross defended his actions, saying he supported his wife and would “absolutely” do it again.

ABs give Smith perfect farewell B

one-crunching tackles by Sam Cane and Liam Squire in the All Blacks’ 57-0 rugby whitewash of the Springboks at Albany was a fitting way to farewell champion defence coach Wayne Smith.

A humble man renowned for his attacking prowess during his rugby playing days for Canterbury and the All Blacks, ‘The Professor’ became a revered international coach who played a major role in New Zealand’s backto-back World Cup success in 2011 and 2015 under the leadership of Graham Henry and Steve Hansen respectively.

Last Saturday’s record thrashing of South Africa at Albany was the perfect send-off for a man who had contributed so much to his country’s success in taking the game to new heights.

The transformation from the previous stuttering win against Argentina was staggering as the All Blacks amassed eight tries against a once-proud nation that has lost its mojo.

Those achieved by Rieko Ioane, Brodie Retallick, Nehe MilnerSkudder and Lima Sopoaga were absolute classics that epitomised the pace and skill of All Black rugby at its best.

With nippy halfback Aaron Smith providing a snappy service, Beauden Barrett was back to his best in setting up two tries for Nehe Milner-Skudder as well as

Agnew’s Angle providing the cross-kick that led to that of his brother, Scott.

It was also the quick thinking Smith’s left-footed crosskick from a tap penalty that nabbed Rieko Ioane the opening try and it was magnificent Ioane breakout that led to Retallick’s stunner with Dane Coles making the final pass.

Beauden Barrett struck the ball beautifully to convert eight of nine attempts at goal. Although few would dispute the awarding of man of the match honours to Retallick, there were several contenders.

Chief amongst them was Cane and Squire who tackled with real venom, Smith, Barrett, and the amazing 20-year-old Ioane who was a constant menace.

Once again the reserves made a huge impact with Codie Taylor, Ofa Tu’ungafasi, Scott Barrett and Ardie Savea maintaining the forward drive and Lima Sopoaga and Anton Lienert-Brown adding their special skills to the backs.

Tu’ungafasi, whose selection raised eyebrows because he was regarded by many as a hopeless scrummager, was a revelation.

Using his 129kg bulk to good effect, he and fellow prop Wyatt Crockett, added power to the scrum and his strong carries were rewarded with a try.

Clearly scrum guru Mick Cron has worked wonders with Tu’ungafasi who, should he maintain this form, will prove a more than adequate replacement for retired international Charlie Faumuina.

Another to make a huge impact off the bench was Lienert-Brown who blasted through the tackle of a big Bok forward to set up a spectacular try for Sopoaga.

It was also pleasing to see fullback Damian McKenzie concentrate on his core duties rather than trying to be constantly involved on attack.

Blessed with freakish flair and pace, he is incredibly gifted but does best when he tempers his involvement.

Meanwhile, with Sonny Bill Williams having another quiet game, it is difficult to understand why he is preferred to LienertBrown and Ngani Laumape as Ryan Crotty’s midfield partner.

Williams was a reserve in both World Cup triumphs but has not got close to the form he showed in the last two years ago. LienertBrown and Laumape are younger, sharper attackers and more reliable tacklers.

Landlords offer stable tenancies

A

survey of 816 rental property owners shows that 49 per cent would like their tenants to stay in the property for a very long time as they have no intention of selling.

Another 12.7 per cent would like them to stay for at least the next 10 years after which they may start thinking about selling the property.

The results indicate that a majority of rental property owners can offer security of tenure for tenants who value this. The NZ Property Investors’ Federa-

tion (NZPIF) advices prospective tenants, who would value a long term tenancy, to ask the owner if they have any plans to sell so they can identify the owners who want long term tenants.

The result also shows that a majority of rental property owners may be willing to enter into a more formal arrangement that further protects a tenant’s security. After the election, the NZPIF would welcome discussions with all political parties and tenant groups. We would like to see if we can come up with a balanced

solution that provides better security for those tenants that want it, without taking away the rights of the owner or disadvantaging them in the process.

“There is potentially an increasing number of tenants who want better security in their rental properties” says NZPIF executive officer, Andrew King.

“This survey result shows that a majority of landlords want this as well, so I’m sure there must be a solution that will meet everyone’s needs.”

akuranga engineer David McKenzie has experienced a sporting world championship as a keen amateur, but that will be nothing when he gets to tee it up with Lydia Ko in the McKayson New Zealand Women’s Open ProAm next week.

McKenzie has won the SKY Television competition, and will play in Ko’s team alongside MC Kim, the owner of the naming sponsor McKayson, in the Pro-Am. The father-of-two is a keen sportsman, having played Caro Bowl tennis in Auckland as a junior, and graduated on to compete in triathlon, ultimately competing twice in the Xterra Off-Road Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii. And he has also completed the Longest Day competition at the Coast to Coast. But for a number of years the structural engineer has been a keen golfer at the Pakuranga club, currently boasting a nine handicap. He entered the competition amongst SKY Television subscribers for some fun.

“I entered it ages ago and of course

unique opportunity of playing with Ko, the event ambassador for the McKayson New Zealand Women’s Open.

“I have two teenage children who are pretty keen. And I’ve got a good friend who is a member at Windross Farm who would be great. But my wife Jacqui really wants to do it as well.”

He had ironically played the Windross Farm course with his friend a few days before receiving the news that he had won the nationwide competition.

“I think it is a really nice course.

I did okay with an 82 although of course they had moved all the tees forward as they prepare the course for the Open.”

McKenzie said he felt nervous when he stood on the start line of the Xterra World Championship twice, and lined up on the beach at Kumara alongside all the stars in the Coast to Coast. “I am superexcited. But the nerves with that drive on the first hole in the ProAm with Lydia looking on is going to be something else.”

6. We may correct or amend advertising to conform to style or for other genuine reason as long as we do so using reasonable care.

7. The guarantees contained in the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 are excluded where the advertiser acquires, or holds himself out as acquiring, goods or services from us for the purpose of a business.

8. The advertiser must tell us as soon as possible if there is an error or omission in any advertisement the advertiser has placed. In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business.

At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter.

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline.

The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.
