58-year-old senior caregiver has narrowly escaped a prison sentence after admitting stealing $32,000 of jewellery from two elderly women in a local retirement home.

One of the elderly women has since died.

Sinei Lisiate, aka Christina Aiavao, appeared for sentencing before Judge Richard Mcilraith at Manukau District Court this week after earlier pleading guilty to two charges of theft of items over $1000.

She faced a maximum penalty

of seven years’ jail on each charge.

Lisiate, who at the time resided in Bucklands Beach, was sentenced to six months’ community detention which means she is able to leave the house but is on a curfew. She needs to be home between the hours of 8pm and 6am Monday-Sunday. She is also under probation supervision for a year and was ordered to pay reparation of $20,000 at $20 a week.

The court heard Lisiate’s first victim was an 88-year-old woman (details are suppressed) residing at the Pakuranga Park Village retirement home.

The second victim at the home

was 79 and has since died.

Lisiate, who worked there between September 2012 and June 2016, worked night shifts.

In March 2016 the first victim suffered a fall and was admitted to hospital. At 11.50pm on March 7 and 9, Lisiate entered the unit using a spare set of keys she had access to. She removed several items of jewellery including diamond and sapphire rings, bracelets and broaches valued at around $15,000. A family member told the Times outside of court the loss is closer to $21,000.

In May 2016, the second victim was admitted to hospital

where she passed away on May 14. While she was away from her unit, Lisiate used the spare keys to enter her room and stole jewellery worth around $17,000.

Police said she stole the jewellery to sell as she was behind in her rent.

Subsequent police enquiries located some of the stolen items at Highland Park Jewellers where she sold six rings for $700. The Antique Shop, Howick, bought seven rings, three bracelets and a broach for $825 and Cash Converters Panmure bought five rings for $1300. ➤ Turn to Page 9

Breeannah Paige Devon Clark has announced her permanent arrival in the couple’s Botany Downs home as the miracle baby they have longed for.

Just after last Christmas the Clarks headed for the USA knowing it was their last chance to conceive a much-wanted baby. They spent six weeks in Nashville, Tennessee undergoing IVF treatment at the Centre for Reproductive Health.

A 28-year-old proven donor produced 40 eggs and the Clarks shared 20 of them with another anonymous childless couple. Of the 20 eggs, eight embryos resulted and one of two was successfully implanted.

The remaining six are in frozen storage ready for when the couple decides to return to the US in search of a brother or sister for Breeannah.

“We were stoked when we found out the baby was a girl,” they say.

Determined they would share the first news with members of their families at the same time, they asked the radiologist to text the scan result to a lady who would bake a cake for them which they would take out to dinner. Depending on the child’s sex, the inside of the cake would be blue or pink.

“We were there to see the news at the same time as our parents and siblings,” Mrs Clark says.

“It was an awesome moment. The grandparents had wanted to eat the cake first, but we made them wait.”

Breeannah was born at Auckland Hospital on October 3 and, Darren says, “we got her home just in time for Bathurst [motorsport event].”

She was three weeks old when the Times visited and the Clark’s had started to

take her on walks.

“We have lovely walkways around here, Mrs Clark says, “and she is going really well.”

Darron says it initially felt surreal sometimes, “as though we were baby-sitting and had to hand her back”.

The IVF process, at $30,000, was worth every cent, he says. The Clarks had already spent $20,000 on an unsuccessful attempt in New Zealand.

Mrs Clark says she thinks about how their next child will be related to Breeannah because there are six embryos waiting in Nashville. I think about that person [the donor] and how grateful we are,” she says, “what it would have been like without her donation. But I feel I provided the nutrients and carried Breeannah. I did it myself so I feel she’s a part of me.

“Ideally we would like a little boy next. But as long as the baby is happy and healthy it doesn’t bother me.

“I am loving being a fulltime mum, being at home, keeping the house nice, looking after baby and sending photos of her to Dad at work.”

When the Times visited,

Mr Clark had been back at his job for two weeks and, after five years of study, is about to qualify for a Diploma in Quantity Surveying.

“The first day back at work was hard, having to leave her,” he says. “But I will be able to have weekends with baby instead of my head in books. We want to be the best parents we can. We want her to be happy and healthy.”

While going offshore for IVF treatment is scary for many, Mr Clark says if people can afford it they should go.

“We had a 40 per cent chance of success here and 86 per cent in America. We achieved what we hoped to do and we hope to create awareness that there are options out there, don’t just give up.

“People are happy to make excuses but I’d like them to think through that the journey is not so scary.

They can look at us and see the result is a happy bouncy bubs. I hope it encourages others to not make excuses but follow their dreams.

“We are lucky that we were in a position to afford it and I would say ‘do it if you can’. Our house feels complete now.

National memorial proposed for Mt Erebus crash dead I

mportant initiatives are being taken to plan for a national memorial for the 257 people who died in the 1979 Mt. Erebus air accident of Air New Zealand McDonnell Douglas DC-10 ZKNZP, Flight TE901.

The national memorial, planned to be ready for the 40th anniversary in November 2019, will be a special place for families affected by the tragedy, and for New Zealand to remember the accident.

A voluntary advisory group, with Lady June Hillary as Patron, is advocating for the new national memorial.

There is presently no public memorial to the Erebus accident where all 257 names are listed together. The airliner crash is still New Zealand’s worst peacetime accident.

National memorial spokesperson, aviation chaplain and historian, Rev Dr Richard Waugh, of Howick, reports that the 40th anniversary in November 2019 will be a very suitable time for the opening of a new national memorial.

“The Mt Erebus accident with 257 fatalities - 237 passengers and 20 crew - is still New Zealand’s worst civil disaster.

“At the time it was the world’s fourth worst aviation accident,” Dr Waugh said.

“New Zealand as a nation continues to be profoundly affected by the tragedy and it is a pastoral and public oversight that nothing has yet been done to establish a national memorial to the Mt Erebus accident victims, especially for the many families involved.”

Older New Zealanders will remember where they were on the evening of November 28, 1979 when the news came through that an Air New Zealand Douglas DC-10 was missing on a scenic flight in Antarctica. Memories come to mind of the early speculative news reports, updates about the fuel running out, the grim waiting, and then the first chilling images; the black smudge on the uphill slope, the impact imprint of the wide body jet on the ice, the burnt-out wreckage in millions of pieces, the heavy undercarriage assembly tossed aside and the dirtied Koru symbol still visible on the smashed tail assembly.

The tragic accident on Mt. Erebus generated an air accident report, a Royal Commission of Inquiry, countless newspaper stories and articles, many books, and television documentaries.

Dr Waugh said neither he nor advisory group members have any intention to refer to or discuss the cause of the accident, and that no location for the national

memorial or funding plan has yet been decided while early consultations are taking place.

The advisory group said: “It is now time to put the controversy of the accident to one side, and focus on a national memorial to those who died; a special place for families and for all New Zealanders to remember.”

In many ways it is a glaring omission that no national memorial has been mooted until now, as many other more recent disasters have their own national memorials, including for the Pike River Mine accident and the Christchurch earthquake victims, the group said.

rative cross and sculpture at Scott Base, Antarctica; designation of the crash site as an Antarctic Specially Protected Area; a memorial and garden of remembrance at Auckland’s Waikumete Cemetery for the 16 passengers who were unidentified and the 28 passengers who were never found; a nearby cherry tree and plaque for the 24 Japanese passengers; a plaque memorial to the crew members at Auckland International Airport; a memorial window at St Stephens Anglican Church in Whangaparoa, a memorial bench at the Lower Hutt Rose Garden; a memorial window and book of remembrance at Auckland’s St Matthew-in-the-City Church; and a

sculpture at Air New Zealand’s Auckland headquarters.

“There are several smaller memorials, mainly in Auckland, but there is no significant place where all 257 names are publically remembered together; where people can gather to have special times of contemplation, prayer and reflection. Such a place is much needed,” Dr Waugh said.

“Surviving spouses, siblings, and children of the victims are aging and many are asking for a national memorial to the accident, in time for the 40th anniversary.”

While some people have suggested they wait until the 50th anniversary in 2029, the advisory committee’s view is that waiting longer would be uncaring and insensitive to so many older relatives.”

“Our advisory group is in touch with many surviving spouses and siblings and other close family, who are now in their 70s and 80s, and who would very much like to have a proper national memorial to the air accident.

Such a national memorial will be a sacred set-apart place where families and others can gather on special remembering occasions.”

Charitable joint venture Stevenson Village goes on the market T

he days of subsidised accommodation could be numbered for the residents of Stevenson Village in Howick.

The long-standing returned servicemen’s accommodation village has been placed on the market for sale.

The Stevenson Village opened in 1975 as a charitable joint venture between Howick Returned Services Association and Sir William and Lady Stevenson.

The 36-unit complex was founded with the aim of providing low-cost and affordable accommodation to qualifying residents – those being returned and former armed services personnel, and latterly those with social housing needs.

Currently, 38 residents are housed by the village, only three of which have connections to returned servicemen.

The village sits on 6186 square metres of land with dual access points onto Botany Road – and has been mooted as prime for redevelopment into a boutique aged care facility or for conversion into a more intensive housing enclave.

In its current format, it consists of 24 studio units, 11 one-bedroom dwellings, a one bedroom/ one office manager’s residence, and communal hall and social amenity. Combined, there are 1520 square metres of buildings on the land.

Proceeds from the sale are to be distributed to charities applying to the Trust over coming years for funding grants to New Zealand registered charities.

The freehold land and buildings at 18 Botany Road are being marketed for sale by Bayleys Auckland salespeople David Bayley and Kevin Barber through a tender process closing on December 8.

The proposed settlement date on the property is June 30, 2017 - allowing residents within the village sufficient time to find alternative accommodation.

Management and operation of the village over the ensuing decades has been overseen by the not-for-profit Stevenson Village Charitable Trust.

Stevenson Village Charitable Trust board chairman John Russell said that while it was sad to bring the curtain down on the organisation’s social housing provision in the area, the funds secured from the sale, along with compounding interest over the ensuing years, would allow numerous communityfocused charities to be funded well into next decade. He further added that the Trust is finding it increasingly difficult to meet its

obligations under the charities legislation.

Mr Russell said the trust would try to assist existing residents if desired to find other suitable housing – working with both charitable organisations, and Government agencies. He hoped all residents would be successfully re-housed well within the seven month settlement period proposed.

“As a social housing provider, the primary focus of Stevenson Village has been meeting the needs of those who have served their country and may otherwise not be able to afford a roof over their heads.

“Accordingly, rents have been well below market levels as the focus of the trust has been deliv-

ering on its social responsibility rather than making a profit,” Mr Russell said.

Under the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan the Stevenson Village land is zoned as mixed housing urban use. However, the property sits beside land zoned business – neighbourhood centre, which accommodates a small suburban neighbourhood shopping centre with associated car parking.

Within the definition of Auckland Council’s mixed housing urban zone is that the land may be used for ‘’Non-residential activities (which) provide for the community’s social, economic and cultural well-being”.

Subject to the appropriate council consents being acquired,

both the mixed housing urban and neighbourhood centre zonings threw up exciting development potentials for the Stevenson Village site.

“Any new owner of the units in their current configuration can look at placing the dwellings back into the rental pool at market levels when the current tenants have moved on. Longer-term plans could see the spatial redevelopment of the units to add more rooms to the current pool, or even a complete redevelopment of the site into a private housing enclave,” Mr Barber said.

“Subject to council consents, the property could be redeveloped into a boutique aged care facility – either with or without on-site healthcare amenities.”

The village’s main hall encompasses a library and recreational facilities, as well as a piano and organ for musical recital sessions.

The building could be converted or upgraded into an administration or medical services facility.

“So there is significant upside on the rental revenues which could be derived from the dwellings as holding income while any necessary council consents and approvals are acquired and new architects plans drawn up for future use of the site,” Mr Bayley said.

The longest residing occupant in the village has been a tenant for over 30 years. None of the original residents who moved into The Stevenson Village in 1975 are still in residence.

News bites Motorbike rider dies A motorcyclist was killed following an accident in Pakuranga on Tuesday night.

Police and emergency services attended a fatal crash which occurred at about 10pm on Reeves Road. The crash involved a car and a motorcycle. Police said the motorcyclist died at the scene.

t was a well-timed celebration. Whilst Anchorage Park School turned 50, sKids - an after school care provider - celebrated two decades of existence by cooking up a storm.

An excited bunch of little cooks made berry muffins at Anchorage Park School.

Faieka Abrahams, franchise owner of sKids at Anchorage Park School, has launched the FoodStorm programme, specially written for sKids on their 20th birthday.

“This is a great way for children to pick up life skills by cooking nutritional food and learning good eating habits,” she says.

“When we announced the FoodStorm programme at the school assembly there were over 50 kids who wanted to be a part of it but we could accommodate only 20 and a couple more.”

During the programme not only do students learn about the fundamentals of healthy eating, but they will also learn how to cook 12 essential recipes that have been developed to meet Heart Foundation guidelines.

“After they have baked the Berry nice Mountain we will give the kids a goody bag and also pack in the recipe so that they can cook at home and share healthy eating habits with their siblings.

Criticisms were levelled recently about the failure of rugby coaches to teach fair play. The Rugby Union was criticised for failing to discipline senior players for actions off the field. Talk about passing the buck.

When I was growing up, it was the responsibility of parents to discipline their children and teach them sound morals and behaviour. This was reinforced by schools, churches, and clubs.

Adults were expected to be in charge and to show the way.

Society embraced a common standard. The Golden Rule was universally acknowledged.

We no longer share, or even agree on, a common standard.

Everyone is on a different page and or has discarded the rule book altogether.

The law is slack and justice is no longer done. The lawmakers are ignorant, yet change the laws as casually as they change their socks. Laws are not enforced consistently and the courts do not uphold them.

Of course we have problems, on and off the field! Whose fault is that?

Who is the coach? Everyone who should know better, who has charge over the young, or is in a position to influence others by their example. We each have a responsibility.

$2.5b on prisons

On the news (recently) it was announced that the Government is going to spend an additional $1 billion to facilitate the growing number of inmates in our prisons. On top of this, it would take between $1b-$1.5b to look after this increased number of inmates.

The question must be asked, with all the poverty and suffering in our community, why are we spending all this taxpayer money creating bigger and better prisons for the dregs of our society. Prisons should be a place where offenders do hard time, not spend it in somewhat luxury with three meals a day and all the home comforts.

Ask a pensioner living on a mere $17,000 a year how they manage after paying the rent, power, heating and food.

The answer is not very well.

Instead of spending money on the law breakers, why not spend it on the law-abiding citizens who have worked hard all their lives only to find they have to live on the bread line when they retire.

The New Zealand Seniors Party is made up of such people who have worked all their lives, paid their taxes and been law-abiding citizens. Pensioners are the forgotten generation that are forced to live in poverty while criminals live in the lap of luxury.

The National Government promised pensioners a ‘living wage’ yet all MPs (covering all parties) take twice this amount paid into their individual superannuation scheme ($31,800 per year).

It is time all the seniors of New Zealand stood together to send a clear message to Government that enough is enough.

The piece of land the current school has been built on was originally designated for a local primary school.

A local primary school normally has a school roll of around 400 pupils. Elim has already reached this number and is seeking to more than double that roll.

The roading and parking infrastructures within Golflands were planned and engineered to cope safely with the cars of the residents, a local primary school and of course some additional allowances for normal traffic, in and out, flow.

We are in our fourth year of the presence of the Elim School in Golflands and the school management have made no effort to ensure that vehicles, belonging to the parents of the children, park safely and legally. Nor have they used the land to the side and rear of the school to provide safe off street parking for the “frazzled” parents, many of whom have travelled a considerable distance through Auckland traffic.

The land has been left like an unused building site and is a total eyesore. The driveway directly in front of the school which would be ideal for a “kiss and drop” drop-off point scenario for parents, has been stoutly defended by the school as a “no go area” for parent parking and remains virtually unused.

The school has not provided sufficient parking for all the teaching, administration and ancillary staff, whose cars are parked around the streets of Golflands during the day, creating safety hazards by restricting vision for other drivers.

I sincerely hope that, prior to any expansion of this school, consideration is given and steps are taken to improve the roading and parking situation in Golflands for the safety of the pupils, parents and residents.

Is this the best idea?

As exciting as the planned Half Moon Bay retirement village sounds, it would be a town planning disaster.

The ferry service from Half Moon Bay and Beachlands is bursting at the seams in carrying workers to the CBD and in (the case of) HMB’s ferries, (they) are only losing customers because of the lack of parking space.

The last place old people want to go to is the CBD so why on earth would you place them next to one of Auckland’s most efficient means of getting workers to the CBD? If anything is required on this old school site, it would be apartment blocks for those having to work in the city with their attendant ferry service.

Many could actually do away with a car altogether. Building a three or four storey car park where the existing ferry parking is would also provide for the commuters further afield.

With Auckland soon to become a city of two million, town planners and property developers need to get their act together as the retirement village, the lack of parking space at Half Moon Bay and, I might add, most suburban railway stations is symptomatic of poor short-term planning and can only exacerbate Auckland’s present transport woes.

Auckland deserves better from the city council town planners.

It must be difficult for Rosina Kandel to be unable to sponsor her child Santosh Bikram to New Zealand because of his condition which will impose undue costs on the public health system.

The NZ Herald’s statement “Kandel said she was ‘heartbroken’ about the comments raising questions about her being a good mother and asking her to go back to her country”.

I didn’t read any comments from people questioning her being a good mother.

All I got was that she did not declare Santosh Bikram as her dependent child when the initial immigration application was made.

She is the one that has to decide whether what she did was right or wrong in not including her own child in the initial application thus denying him the opportunity of ‘a better life’.

I applaud the Immigration and Protection Tribunal for their very sensible decision.

Tackling the P problem N

ew Zealand has seen a scourge of methamphetamine in recent years. This has impacted the lives of drug users, their families and the wider community, as well as enabling gangs and organised crime to flourish through manufacture and supply.

In 2009, the Tackling Methamphetamine Action Plan was launched to address the prevalent use of the drug. The plan focused on disrupting and closing down manufacture and supply of methamphetamine. Customs used a range of interventions and technologies to restrict importation, such as controlled deliveries and interception, which enabled Police to identify and arrest key offenders.

Through the combined efforts of Police and Customs we have been making progress. But there’s more we need to do. The Prime Minister has recently announced further steps in the Government’s plan to tackle P. Almost $15 million seized from criminals in the last year will be invested into anti-drug initiatives.

This is the highest funding to date.

It will provide more resources for Police and Customs to target drug trafficking as well as develop more treatment options for drug abusers.

We are now also investing in programmes to identify and stop precursors and illicit drugs before they even reach New Zealand.

First Photographers of Warsaw Take a fascinating journey through the eyes of the first photographers of Warsaw in the late nineteenth century featuring at the Polish Heritage Trust Museum in Howick.

The exhibition which is now in its final weeks has images exhibited by three outstanding precursors of Polish photography, Beyer, Brandel and Fajans’.

Their accomplishments constitute the foundation of Warsaw’s photographic heritage, plus illustrate the progress of the art and technique of photography – from first attempts at open air photographs to dynamic scenes from life of the town.

This exhibition comes from the Museum of Warsaw.

MP for Botany working to detect drugs at the border and also attempt to disrupt and dismantle the supply of methamphetamine being brought into New Zealand by overseas gangs.

So far $35,000 has been invested to set up an early warning system for new and emerging illicit substances (such as psychoactive substances). This process aims to help Customs prepare to identify and prevent new illegal substances being brought in.

It’s also really important that we address the demand for drugs in New Zealand. We’re now dealing with a hard-core group of users struggling to kick the habit. We need to focus more on them by investing $8.7m in health-related initiatives. This is on top of the $150m the government invests every year into alcohol and drug treatment programmes. The additional funding includes treatment facilities, detox services, and helplines.

We are tackling drug related offending from many angles by targeting those who are trafficking, manufacturing, supplying and demanding P. This approach prioritises saving lives, giving families hope, and making our communities safer.

Refuse collection raises money Pakuranga College Interact Club members collected six large bags of refuse on the Rotary Walkway as part of their latest community project.

Interact is the junior branch of Rotary International and has an obligation to complete at least one community and one international project.

The Pakuranga Sailing Club was the base where students enjoyed a celebratory barbecue when the task was done.

Money raised will go to charities of the students’ choice along with sponsorship of two children through World Vision.

‘Serious fun’ is the Interact motto and, in the blustery but dry conditions, the walkway project was considered “serious fun indeed”.

Interact Clubs also operate at Edgewater and Macleans Colleges.

Lady trapped in car

eeing a disoriented lady trapped in a car screaming for help was the last thing Becky Williams expected when she stopped by to drop stuff off at the charity clothing bin in Howick.

A navy blue Audi parked in the Central Terraces car park across Ella Bella’s Pet Boutique suddenly rolled backwards and onto the expanse of the wide bank before crash landing on the other level of the public car park at Fencible Drive.

A startled Ms Williams rushed to the victim’s rescue.

Duo cast in Billy Elliot the Musical Two local girls are taking to the stage in Billy Elliot the Musical, the professional show currently on at the new ASB Waterfront Theatre, until the end of November.

Scarlett Jacques, 14, who attends Saint Kentigern College, and Marissa McKay, 11, who lives in Howick, have parts as ballet girls in the show.

Marissa has a strong dance background and Scarlett has a strong theatre background.

They both went through the audition process, to be cast in one of two groups which alternate playing Mrs Wilkinson’s ballet girls each night.

They’ve had to fit working in this professional production around their school work and lives.

“The ballet girls are absolutely hilarious in the show - strong comedic timing and wonderful ensemble work which plays against Billy’s rising talent,” a spokesman said.

3000km adventure through NZ

T

his weekend Matt Dowdle will take a bus and then a shuttle from the city lights of Auckland to the northern tip of New Zealand – his starting point.

On Sunday, at the Cape Reinga Lighthouse, the 24-year-old will start walking and in early-to-mid-April 2017 he will arrive in Bluff.

It is roughly a 3000km, five month journey on foot for Dowdle and one that he says is sure to be a “massive adventure”.

Travelling about 20km a day, he will carry everything he needs on his back and will resupply as he makes his way down the country.

The former Pakuranga College head boy came up with the idea half way through this year after spending just about every spare weekend over the past few years tramping up mountains or trekking deep into the bush.

Dowdle, who has been working in graphic design and photography in Auckland for the past two years, says he wanted to take his passion for the outdoors even further.

“Lost Zealand” – will follow New Zealand’s mountain ranges and forests and in most sections will link up with the Te Araroa Trail.

Dowdle says he has improvised a bit from the Te Araroa route to spend as

much time as possible in the New Zealand environments he loves.

“The forest, the places where it’s big wide open country, big rolling mountains, rivers, really remote locations – that’s the sort of stuff that I really look forward to.”

He could be in the bush for 10 days or more at a time, he says.

By going off the Te Araroa Trail and going through the Kaimais, the Kaimanawas, the Kawekas and then the Ruahines, Dowdle says he will be able to stick to the forest and avoid plenty of farmland and roads. Of course this also poses more risks.

“It’s going to be a bit tougher ... but I do want to challenge myself during this walk. The Kaimanawas through the Kawekas to the Ruahines – it’s quite long and also the Ruahines have a reputation of being really steep and having lots of bluffs.”

The remoteness of certain sections of the South Island is also going to be a challenge, he says.

“There are not really that many towns through the centre of the South Island, so when you’re coming out of a tramp you’re not really coming out into a town where

you can resupply.

“So that’s where sending off packages of food and stuff is really important – making sure I get a package at the end of a tramp.”

Weather will also be something Dowdle keeps a close eye on throughout the trip.

“It changes so often. In the morning it could be totally sunny and then by the afternoon it could be pouring down with rain and being in the bush, rain is a pretty big risk because of rising rivers and also just getting wet and cold.”

He will be carrying a personal locator beacon and other GPS-enabled tools for safety.

Dowdle says in many ways, the North Island will be preparation for the South Island.

He will be avoiding ferries, cars and buses as much as possible, and even wants to sail across the Cook Strait if he can find a boat.

Dowdle is partnering with environmental education programme Trees for Survival, which teams up with schools and young people to grow and plant native trees on erosion-prone land – restoring natural habitats by helping landowners re-vegetate, improve stream flow and water quality, and increase biodiversity.

He says the organisation’s values and vision are in line with his.

“As an ambassador, I really want to help them out and this walk, by partnering with them, is helping them promote their cause and hopefully it will allow them to work with more schools throughout New Zealand.”

He is also partnering with well-known camera and electronics brand Nikon, which will be supplying him with lenses specific to the conditions and environments he will be travelling through.

Nikon has also given him one of its new KeyMission 170 video cameras (similar to a GoPro), and will supply him with batteries, SD cards and other camera equipment along the way.

Snack food company One Square Meal will keep him well fed.

“This sort of stuff is the stuff I want to be doing,” Dowdle says, “landscape photography, working with outdoor brands, working with environmental groups and organisations and tying it all together.”

HMB Rotary golf day is here The Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay is hosting its 18th annual fundraising Ambrose Golf Day on November 7.

Church helps spruce up Macleans Primary

BotanyLife Community Church helped local school with more than 40 projects over a weekend

ast year it was Howick Intermediate. This year it was Macleans Primary School. Each year, BotanyLife Community Church donates an entire weekend to a local school to help with big projects that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

This year they built an outdoor stage along with an outdoor seating and poolside picnic tables. Fences were stained, playground markings painted, gardens planted, and a long jump pit was also installed.

“This is a part of our commitment to playing a positive role in the local community. With support from local businesses and over 200 volunteers taking part, we could achieve an incredible amount over the weekend,” says pastor Mark van Wijk of BotanyLife Community Church.

More than 40 projects were completed, including concreting.

“The support from the school community was fantastic with lots of staff and parents joining in, as well as volunteers from the wider community,” says Mr Wijk.

While a number of local businesses, including PlaceMakers Pakuranga, Hirepool East Tamaki, and Wild Wheat continued their support, this year it was the Howick Local Board that funded the bulk of the construction material costs, he says.

A design competition was held amongst students in the lead up to the project, and the highlight was the installation of eight new murals, inspired by winning designs.

Mr Brian Bayly, principal Macleans Primary says that the school environment has been greatly enhanced by the project team, who engaged with the school community to undertake an incredible school improvement project.

Particularly proud of the murals designed by the students, he says the messages are positive and thought-provoking.

“We are truly indebted to BotanyLife Church,” he says with gratitude.

By Farida Master No one was surprised when Nicholas Webber of Pakuranga College was the only winner from Auckland who qualified for the 13th International Geography Olympiad (iGeo 2016) held in Beijing, China, recently.

Nicholas was part of a team of four representing New Zealand on the world stage where 16-19 year olds from 45 countries participated in the Olympiad hosted at the Beijing Conference Centre.

Having returned to Auckland with a Bronze, he says “the competition was intense but fun”.

The iGeo consists of three parts, a written test, a multimedia test and a substantial fieldwork exercise requiring observation, leading to cartographic representation and geographical analysis.

The 18-year-old says that it was the field work challenge that he really looked forward to.

“Much as you are book smart, it’s about being practical. I enjoy geography trips and am more on the earth science path.

Instead of studying maps and capital cities, Nicholas says he prefers exploring “how we can make earthquakes more predictable.”

One of the challenges at the Olympiad involved looking at a major city in New Zealand and redeveloping an area in Beijing with community gardens, aqueduct, etc., taking into consideration air pollution, traffic congestion, sustainability and liveability.

An interesting aside that Nicholas shares is that having earlier won a scholarship to go on a cultural exchange to Thailand, he discovered that the Thai student who won the Geography Olympiad “was from the same school in Thailand that I had taught English in.”

It had him thinking that despite the geographical distances that divide us, the world is a very small place to live in.

smorgasbord of events, the Taiwan Day at the Aotea Square on the weekend was graced with an array of multi-cultural performances both by local groups and indigenous Taiwanese who were flown in for the event.

Traditional Taiwanese handicrafts that included paper umbrellas, hand carved wooden figurines and indigenous clothes and jewellery were on display for spectators to soak in the colours and ethos of Taiwan.

The event was organised by the Taiwanese Hwa Hsia Society, Taiwanese Women’s Association of New Zealand and Taiwanese in New Zealand Association has many members from Howick,

Pakuranga, Botany and Ormiston.

Deputy mayor of Taichung City, Lin Ling-San, said that it was a great occasion to mark 20 years of the sister cities, Auckland and Taichung.

“We have around 16 indigenous tribes of Taiwan, some of whom have a connection with Maori and we consider them a part of our extended family,” he said.

Chen, Wen-Cheng, secretariat International Affairs Division head from Tawian and Ned Chou, deputy director general from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Auckland, took particular pride in sharing the rich heritage, art and culture of Taiwan with all those who turned up.

Funding from five of the six southern local boards is supporting the resumption of a counselling clinic for over 65-year-olds.

Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau has appointed Denise Kuek to conduct the Age Concern Denise Kuek sessions with the help of the Howick, Papatoetoe/Otara, MangereOtahuhu, Manurewa and Papakura Local Boards.

Ms Kuek’s experience is with older people and their family members who have issues such as grief and loss associated with illness, loss of independence, loss of a spouse, financial issues or a change in living circumstances.

CAB manager Louise Boswell says older people can be hesitant to express their needs to others. Counselling can help clients to identify effective means of communicating with the aim of building and maintaining healthy relationships.

Ms Kuek says counselling can help older people feel affirmed, respected and more confident to deal with their issues and make helpful decisions about their lives.

“People who have used our counselling clinic in the past have said they gained more confidence, understanding and insight, feel less stressed and better able to make decisions as a result of counselling,” she says. “It helps to be able to say things in a safe environment with a person they feel at ease with.”

Conference business eyes growth

s construction projects in Auckland’s CBD accelerate, the synergy between the Waipuna Hotel and Conference Centre in Mt Wellington and its satellite conference suites at Highbrook is poised to take up the extra demand expected to result in the south of the SuperCity.

Waipuna’s Highbrook conference facility was established in September 2013 as part of The Crossing development at Highbrook Business Park.

It was an opportunity to expand the business then based on the Waipuna Hotel and Conference Centre in Mt Wellington.

Owner, the Mt Wellington Trust, saw Highbrook as an opportunity to expand its business, says Daron Gray, director of sales and marketing. Many of Waipuna’s existing clients operated in the East Tamaki/Highbrook area.

“We thought it would be a great extension to our business because this would provide a facility closer to them,” he says.

Response to the decision to open in Highbrook was initially extremely positive, Mr Gray says.

“Waipuna was an established brand. The Mt Wellington hotel had been around since the 60s. A lot of people had been to a wedding, conference or had had a lunch here. They knew the standard we offer.”

Glitches at the start included a change in opening dates and parking availability which has since been expanded. But a group

“Then we went out to the wider area in a big radius to East Tamaki businesses to let them know about us,” Mr Gray says. Since then, as the number of large companies take up residence at the business park they have brought their patronage for the conference centre with them.

“Small local businesses support us and GETBA (Greater East Tamaki Business Association) uses the facility,” he says.

Waipuna Highbrook has teamed up with Highbrook Rotary, sponsoring and participating in the annual fun run and walk. “It gives us exposure,” Mr Gray says, “and shows our support and involvement in the community.”

Close links have also been established with the neighbouring Quest serviced apartments management.

“From day one we have been

supportive of one another,” Mr Gray says. “They may be full so we assist and support them with accommodation at Mt Wellington and they recognised that if we have a big conference people would want accommodation on the Highbrook site.”

Traditionally accommodation and conference business has been focused on the central city.

But Mr Gray is currently in talks with the Airport Hotel and the Vodafone Events Centre to come up with a strategy to attract more events to the south.

“People are doing things differently, making sure they get something out of the event.

There is a definite purpose to them and technology is a major part of what they do. Breakouts are important and Highbrook has the flexibility of three breakout spaces if needed.

“Dietary needs are changing with requests for vegetarian and gluten free food.”

From day one, Mr Gray says Waipuna relied heavily on the Times to get exposure for its new Highbrook facility, recognising that a lot of the readership were people working in the large East Tamaki and Highbrook companies. “It’s been a fantastic relationship and the Times people are always helpful sorting things such as deadlines for us.

“We still use the newspaper for high teas at Mt Wellington Waipuna. We used to run dine-anddance and Sunday lunch ads but they have become so popular we haven’t needed to advertise,” he says.

“It’s difficult to specify the impact the advertising has had on our conference business. But it’s important for getting the exposure and the message out.”

Occasionally a proposal is bigger than a minor change and needs to be submitted as a full amendment. This will need to go to the processing team to assess, and can add weeks onto the process. To reduce possible delays, be sure to discuss these changes with the inspector as early in the process as possible. Something householders may find minor, like changing the size of a window, may end up affecting wall bracing, lintel sizes, ventilation or light requirements, and the like.

workshops and trade breakfasts whenever possible. And conduct regular toolbox talks on site to impart the knowledge to colleagues. Remember that knowing health and safety obligations will help protection on the site and legally.

■■ Feel free to ask inspectors questions. They are highly trained and extremely knowledgeable about the Building Code. They are up-to-date on the latest trends and construction techniques. However, while the inspectors are always willing to help wherever they can, they must remain impartial and independent. So, Mr Fahrensohn advises not to ask them for their preferred product or builder. However a little knowledge can save a lot of money, he says, so don’t be afraid to ask. If an interpreter is needed, use someone who is familiar with building terminology, as terms such as studs, nogs and dwangs don’t translate well in any language.

■■ Be sure to have all outstanding certificates and other paperwork when applying for the Code Compliance Certificate (CCC). Nearly all CCC requests result in a request for further information which “stops and clock” and delays its issue. Having these documents prepared and available at the final inspection would help the process run more efficiently. To help identify what paperwork will be required inspectors will list these as they are required on their inspection checklists. Another source of these is the ‘advice’ notes listed in the Building Consent documentation issued with the plans.

ouseholders planning a building or renovation for their home will need to obtain an approved consent before beginning work. However, the process of gaining consent and following through to obtain a Code of Compliance Certificate at the end can be daunting, time-consuming and frustrating.

Jeff Fahrensohn, managerinspections for Auckland Council’s building control team says there are some simple things householders and their builder can do to save hours, weeks and dollars on building inspections.

Here are his top five secrets to passing building inspections: ■■ Make sure you are ready for the building inspection. A lot of contractors are so busy they find it easier to use an inspector to compile a snag list of issues to address. About 80 per cent of all inspection fails can be avoided by having a quality system in place. This doesn’t have to be a complex process, even a quick “once-over” to ensure it’s complete would help save between 15,000 and 20,000 re-inspections. That equates to about $2.5 million in fees and 18,000 hours saved.

■■ Substituting a product or material, or changing the design, results in a loss of productivity because the inspector needs to assess and approve the changes. If the change is considered a ‘minor variation’, then the inspector will try and approve this on site during the inspection. In some cases, they will need to research product compliance and this may delay the approval process.

Puppies are curious by nature, so it’s important to remove anything that is potentially dangerous from their environment. Keep disinfectants, insecticides and pesticides out of reach.

Remember that some houseplants and flowers, such as the ficus, rhododendron or lily, can be harmful to dogs. Either replace these with less harmful plants or consider moving them somewhere a little more secure.

Puppy’s living space

Make a point of creating a small living space for a puppy as soon as it arrives by using a crate and/or safety gates.

A pup must be given enough room to go about its daily activities without necessarily giving it access to the entire house. The area can be expanded as the bond and trust between puppy and owner grows, eventually allowing the puppy to come and go as it pleases.

Carrot rust fly larvae feed on roots of carrot, celery and parsnip plants and parsley.

Put lawn clippings around the plants – this confuses the flies’ sense of smell and stops them landing to lay eggs.

Put a polythene “fence” (800mm high) around the crop. This stops flies from finding egg-laying sites near

Codling moth caterpillars Codling moth caterpillars feed inside fruit, especially apples. Remove flaking bark from tree trunks to stop the caterpillars making cocoons there over winter. A band of corrugated cardboard around the trunk will stop codling moth caterpillars as they migrate down (late summer-autumn). The band makes a good site for them to make their cocoons. It can be removed and burnt after the fruit is harvested.

Cutworms

Cutworms chew any young seedlings. Push tin or cardboard cylinders 25mm into the ground around young plants to protect stems – toilet rolls are ideal. Hoe lightly around plants to expose cutworms and then remove them.

Leafroller caterpillars feed

on leaves and fruit. Plant carrots, parsnips, parsley or dill. If left to flower they will attract parasitic ichneumon wasps. Mow under trees to remove other refuges. Pick damaged leaves and burn them.

Mealybugs

Mealybugs can damage leaves, fruit trees, houseplants and vegetables.

Attract natural enemies – lacewings – with flowers or clover. Spray bugs with soapy water or hose underside of leaves. Kill bugs on houseplants by touching them with a cotton swab dipped in methylated spirits.

Scale insects can affect leaves, fruit and branches of ornamentals and houseplants. Many natural enemies such as ladybirds and parasitic wasps are active on unsprayed trees, and often control scale adequately for the home gardener. Remove and burn infested branches and stems. Kill bugs on houseplants by touching them with a cotton swab dipped in methylated spirits, or simply wipe them off the leaves.

Slugs and snails

Slugs and snails feed on leaves of many vegetables and green house crops.

The adult flies feed on the nectar of French marigolds, nasturtiums and poppies, so plant these among the plants aphids might damage. Put out food to encourage birds.

Taumalolo blasts England I

t’s a pity that the Kiwis league team are not getting full value from Jason Taumalolo for want of a decent ball distributor.

The most dynamic loose forward in the NRL, North Queensland Cowboy Taumalolo is limited to a prop’s barging role at international level because the Kiwis have so few playmaking props and second rowers who can put him through gaps.

The exception is captain Jesse Bromwich but we saw few offloads from him in this match.

Despite this the powerful Taumalolo and interchange forward Martin Taupau’s bruising runs often required three, and sometimes four defenders to stop them in Sunday’s 17-16 test win against hosts England at Huddersfield.

This was a tough, rugged arm

wrestle against two big packs rather than a free-flowing match in which slick passing, speedy backs demonstrated their skills and elusiveness. But there was a lot of commitment and courageous tackling.

In the end the difference was Shaun Johnson’s late field goal after his tactical kicking kept the English pinned in their own quarter for much of the second spell.

Johnson’s 80m runaway try from an intercept was also timely, with determined wing Jordan Rapana adding a pair and fullback Jordan Kahu, so solid under the high ball, succeeding with two goals.

Once again Kevin Proctor and Tohu Harris were major contributors to an excellent defen-

sive effort, as was standoff half Thomas Leuluai who punches well above his weight.However Leuluai will be sorely missed if the concussion he suffered against England prevents him from taking the field against favourites Australia who have three brilliant playmakers in Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Jonathan Thurston It’s shame the Kiwis can’t match them in this department because they are well served out wide by Solomone Kata, Jason Nightingale, Rapana and Kahu.

Unfortunately veteran Shaun Kenny-Dowall is creating nothing. Nor is he running with the strength and determination he was renowned for.

Meanwhile the All Blacks task against Ireland in Chicago could

be tougher than would normally be expected if both Brodie Retallick (concussion) and Sam Whitelock (sprained ankle) are to miss this test as seems likely.

However it will be a great chance for the likes of Patrick Tuipulotu, Luke Romana and Scott Barrett to show their worth after the 125kg Tuipuloto impressed against the Pumas.

Howick College sevens girls claim Auckland title

The Howick College open girls sevens team won the 2016 Auckland Secondary School Sevens competition recently, qualifying for nationals.

The event was held at the Auckland Marist Rugby Club ground in Panmure.

The Howick College team overcame Onehunga High School, Mangere College, and Otahuhu College in the pool rounds.

They then beat Papatoetoe High School in the quarterfinal, Mt Albert Grammar in the

semi-final and Southern Cross Campus in the final.

The final was a tight, hardfought match that was decided in the last 20 seconds, with Howick coming out 21-17 ahead.

Assistant coach Adelita Sotutu said the team’s goal going into the tournament was to make the top four and qualify for nationals.

“Going on to win was definitely unexpected and exciting for Howick College,” she said.

“It helped that the majority of the girls played in the Under 15 comp the year before. The

team is young with mainly Year 11s making up the team.”

The Howick College girls will now take part in the 2016 Condor Sevens tournament – New Zealand’s national secondary school sevens tournament – which will be held at Sacred Heart College in December.

Five members of the team have also been selected in the Auckland Under 19 Secondary Schools Sevens squad.

They are: Iva Livani, Lasalle Lefale, Hinemoa Watene, Shalom Setu-Veve and Teuila Sotutu.

The Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club (HPCC) premier men started their first two-day match against East Coast Bays CC at Windsor Park on the North Shore on Saturday.

This was the first weekend on grass for the HPCC prems and they lost the toss and were put in to bat.

The Howick Softball Club premier men beat Auckland Marist 4-2 at Simson Reserve in Penrose on Saturday.

After a good start, and with the welcomed arrival of Czech international Jiri Korcak into the team, Howick defended their lead and walked away with a convincing win.

Howick pitcher Campbell Gibson and catcher Harrison Valk performed well together and combined to get a total of nine strikeouts.

Campbell Gibson, adding to his great day on the mound, also executed a wellplaced and well-needed bunt with the bat, and Harrison Valk, Stu Reynolds, Thomie Davies, Seth Gibson and Huw Davies all batted well to secure their team’s lead.

Howick Softball Club’s premier women lost 1-0 to Otahuhu at Sturges Park.

Some costly errors in the field and some quality pitching by Otahuhu made it hard for the Howick women to get ahead, despite solid batting by Breanna Gibson and Stefanie Smith.Czech international Veronika Peckova also pitched well for Howick, securing 10 strikeouts, but it wasn’t enough and Otahuhu walked away with the close win.

here’s no stopping inspirational Howickian Garry Donoghue, who has just completed another marathon.

The 71-year-old finished the Auckland Marathon (42.195km) at the weekend in 4 hours 40 minutes and was second out of 11 for his age group.

Mr Donoghue, who ran seven marathons in his 70th year last year, said he was very happy with Sunday’s result.

“A bit stiff after the run, but very good today,” he told the Times on Monday.

“I plan to run 10km tomorrow to run out any stiffness. On the strength of how I feel today I will be signing up for the Rotorua Marathon later this week.”

Mr Donoghue said he has also entered the 2017 World Masters Games – held in Auckland in April – in not only the half marathon race, but also the 10km event and 12km cross-country.“I plan to do two marathons a year until I am unable,” he said.

“I completed the Rotorua Marathon in April. I run sufficient distances each week to stay marathon ready.”

Strong winds testing Young sailors competing in the Howick leg of the Junior East Auckland Series were tested by strong winds at the weekend, with a southerly breeze of between 10 and 20 knots keeping the competition tight.

Howick Sailing Club, which was hosting the event, came out on top overall, finishing with the lowest score on aggregate across the top five sailors from each club.

The inter-club regatta saw four east Auckland sailing clubs congregate at Howick Beach on Sunday – Maraetai Sailing Club, Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, Glendowie Boating Club and Howick Sailing Club.

by Yamaha, and all the competitors were aged between 11 and 16.

There were three races – open starlings, open optimists, and optimist green fleet.

akuranga’s Rose Zheng won the women’s 2016 Cobra Puma New Zealand Amateur Championship at the weekend at the Royal Wellington Golf Club.

The 14-year-old is the second youngest golfer in history to win the title behind world number one Lydia Ko. Zheng was stunned following her incredible win.

“I can’t believe it, I can’t believe it and I don’t know what to say!”

She said it meant so much to her.

“I hope this can be a big boost for my future. Winning my first Jennian Homes Charles Tour event was also a huge booster last week, so I am pretty happy.”

That win was at the 2016 John Jones Steel Harewood Open in Christchurch and it was convincing – Zheng finished seven shots ahead of her nearest opponent.

But her win in Wellington at the weekend was much harder fought.After winning her quarter-final (1-up) and semi-final (2/1), she defeated Munchin Keh 3 and 2 in the final.

Despite the victory appearing comfortable, Keh pushed Zheng right to end by sinking three bird-

ies in four holes early in round two.

Zheng showed composure, however, and secured her second big win in a matter of weeks.
