But how did it all begin?

Howick Village Business Association (HVBA) town centre manager Jenny Foster says Midnight Madness commenced in 1992 to complement the Howick Santa Parade.

“The idea was to begin the Christmas season with a shopping promotion that was followed by the Howick Santa Parade,” says Mrs Foster.

“In those years, the Santa Parade was the very next day.”

John Lovell, of Silks Jewellers in Picton Street, a new jeweller in town at the time, says he invited “everyone” including Howick business owners and operators, to a breakfast meeting at the Information Centre.

Call for Howick to secede

T

he Howick Ward’s population is a little larger than Tauranga’s, about the same as Dunedin, and not all that shy of Hamilton – about the right size for an independent entity, says John Roy who is flying a kite for a Howick City.

He’s got all the supporting documents ready to give to the Government if he gets sufficient public traction for a split away from the Super City. The Howick businessman and former Honorary Polish Consul to New Zealand was the first chairman of the Eastern City Association which campaigned in earlier years for a break-away from the former Manukau City Council, aeons before the Super City was thought of.

He’s still got all the paperwork stacked in the basement of his Howick home and is ready to resurrect it.

“If we get support for our own city, we should call it Howick City and do something about it,” he says.

“It’s easy to do. We can decide to form the city, take away from Auckland Council all our assets and establish a small administration. We don’t have to have a mass of people working for us.”

Rather he has an imaginative approach of outsourcing many of the civic jobs local councils are charged to do.

“For example,” he says, “we could get Hamilton City to do the donkey work for us – another city doing our administration such as collecting rates.”

The current Auckland Council, he says, has lost control.

“My rates have gone up by 71 per cent and my commercial rate more than 50 per cent.

“In the same period rates on my apartment in Wellington have gone up 13 per cent. The rates on

will be hard”, he says.

“But when the call went out for the Wellington region to become a Super City I got hold of the Wellington mayor and told her about the experience here. The result was a 93 per cent rejection. They won at our cost.

“My view is that a right size city to control is about 150,000 people. Anything more than that poses a problem when it comes to delegation.

“The mayor of a population of 150,000 would be like a chief executive,” Mr Roy says. “He or she would have an overview of everything and be capable of managing it. Len Brown [Auckland Mayor] hasn’t got the time to do all that.

“He didn’t realise the Polish Museum in Howick was such a treasure until he visited us. Yet in a city of 150,000 people, the chief executive would have a day-byday view.” ➤ Turn to Page 2

our house in the Bay of Islands have gone down, yet they are up 71 per cent here,” he says.

He doesn’t believe that Auckland Council elected representatives make the decisions, pointing to the recent furore when the name of Development Auckland was changed unbeknown to the elected councillors.

“Who is running the city?” he asks.

“It’s time to have another look.

If we get support for this [Howick City] we could form a committee and start work.”

He envisages Howick Ward developing into a city of about 150,000 people (2006 Census statistics put it at 113,508).

He says he hasn’t established an informal committee and will wait to see what support he gets.

He concedes that the hardest ask for parting company with Auckland Council will be getting the legislation changed – “that

owick College has turned a major corner.

Principal of Howick College, Iva Ropati, is delighted with its latest ERO review.

It has gone from being a college that consistently under-achieved and has risen above the national achievement level, a feat Mr Ropati is proud of.

“Our ERO review is our badge of honour. At this point of time we are really strong. An outside person from a professional organisation has endorsed that the school is being served well.

We can now continue to maintain those standards,” he says.

It’s been a long, arduous journey. In the past few years the school was reviewed practically every year.

“The other day I was having a read of the ERO reports since 2009 and it was fascinating reading,” says Mr Ropati who took over as principal in 2010.

“It’s evident that the school is progressing every step of the way.

The purpose of ERO reviews is to give parents and the wider school community assurance about the quality of education that schools provide, thus answering the pivotal question: How effectively are the school’s curriculum promoting student learning-engagement and learning outcomes for children and for specific groups of children including Maori students, Pacific students and students with special needs.

“Our education reviews moved from once every year to once in two years and then once in three years,” says Mr Ropati.

Now Howick College has joined the list of other schools in East Auckland that are reviewed once in every four to five years.

“This is a very good indicator of the high quality of teaching in our local schools.

Learning is a life-long process and now I can say that our school has impressed on the students the desire to learn,” he ends with pride.

Howick girls in London

I

t’s a small world after all for journalists Jessica Mutch and Melissa Davies.

The local lasses and childhood friends have been crossing paths in London for the past two years as they represent rivals TVNZ and Mediaworks as the networks’ European correspondents.

While Jessica, who returned to Auckland this week, has reached the end of her twoyear tenure, Melissa will remain in London where she has been based for five years.

Both were there for the recent Rugby World Cup coverage which saw thousands of Kiwis make the pilgrimage to the UK. The pair first met during drama classes at Uxbridge Children’s Theatre (now Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre) in Howick more than 20 years ago.

“We were dressing up as tress and monkeys and hopping around the stage at Uxbridge,” Melissa recalls.

Back then there was no talk about journalism although both harboured similar ambitions in their teens.

“We were probably more focused on being a good tree!”

Melissa says.

“My nana was the careers advisor at Howick College when Jess was there so obviously she would’ve given Jess advice not knowing one day she would be my opponent in London!” Melissa says.

The coincidences didn’t end there with both going to Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and interning at the Times albeit at separate times.

Their careers took off with Jessica based in Wellington as political reporter for TVNZ and Melissa making a name for herself with the national broadcaster before moving to TV3 and landing the coveted overseas role.

“It really wasn’t until we saw each other in London again

that we caught up,” Melissa says. “We often reflect on the fact that two Howick girls are here doing the same job!”

Jessica says it was amusing but surreal.

“It’s a strange connection being on the other side of the world working opposite and alongside each other.”

Yet the two Kiwi reporters and their cameramen maintain a friendly rivalry.

“We hang out quite a bit outside of work and we have a pretty good understanding of what we can and can’t talk about,” says Jessica. “It’s such a unique job and such a weird set of hours that you find yourself in strange cities and strange countries.”

In fact, the talented duo has

often turned up wearing the same colours at breaking stories such as this year’s Charlie Hebdo shooting in France.

Behind the scenes, there are a few challenges although both say they are used to the time differences and unusual hours.

For Jessica, it’s the isolation.

“The hardest part is just operating by yourself. I went from quite a close-knit press gallery to being just one person in my newsroom.”

People don’t realise that it’s a job that’s constantly on the move, she says.

“You write scripts in cars, sit on sidewalks and make phone conversations in the middle of a field and while you’re waiting for a cab.”

For Melissa, the challenges posed are the same reasons she loves the job.

“So often we deal with tragic events and tragic situations and I always think that if you can go in there and not just treat it as a job but see it as a person you really get a sense of empathy. Sometimes it definitely hits home, and it can be a little bit of a rollercoaster.”

Importantly, it’s been an experience of a lifetime.

“It’s been pretty amazing, a pretty unique experience.

There are lots of little moments that will go into the memory bank,” says Jessica.

With both home in East Auckland this Christmas, there will no doubt be more moments to share.

Driver lucky to walk away from crash

By Nick Krause The driver of this vehicle was lucky to have escaped unscathed following an accident on the corner of Chapel Road and Santa Ana Drive, in Howick.

Police said the male driver was shaken up but was not injured.

They were unsure of his age.

The accident happened around 3.30pm on Monday.

Reader Ro Harris commented on the Times Facebook post: “Was cleaned up by 4.30”.

No further details were available at press time as to how the accident may have happened although police said it appears a vehicle failed to give way.

Fruit of their labour

t was shrouded in secrecy.

There was a conspiracy theory as undercover meetings were held at Bucklands Beach Intermediate School.

No one got the wind of it except for the deputy principal Mark Stevenson and NZEI teacher Jan Kean.

The teachers at BBI were in for a big surprise when they walked in to school this week to find trees laden with fruits of their hard labour.

The 820 students along with their leaders celebrated Teachers’ Appreciation Day by creating an artificial forest with little notes on leaves telling every class teacher how they feel about them.

“On one side of the leaf is a note of appreciation to their class teacher and on the other side is a note to the specialist teachers of elective classes,” says Mr Stevenson who gives credit to Ms Kean for coming up with the idea.

“In my special list class Mr Smith taught me how to make a lolly dispenser. I really liked how he trusted us on the machines and everything else we needed to make it. He allowed us to be creative and learn important skills,” is part of a note written by Mattias Turinsky of Room 11.

Mr Stevenson says none of it would’ve been possible without the effort of Audio Visual Technique specialist teacher Shona Davis and design specialist Hannah Walker.

“Most of all it was a great experience seeing the student leaders take initiative to surprise the teachers and show them how appreciative they are of the positive impact they’ve had on their learning.”

Law breakers mess up park Despite the fact that letting off fireworks in public places, including parks, was banned in the Super City in 2013, the Times photographer found parts of Barry Curtis Park and Eastern Beach littered with Guy Fawkes’ rubbish the day after November 5.

The ban was introduced in 2013 across the region to protect people, animals and property, says Malcolm Page, Auckland Council’s manager local and sports parks south.

Sky lanterns, also known as Chinese lanterns, pose significant fire risk when left to fly away, the council says. They may only be used if they are secured or fixed and unable to float away.

Artists find own quiet space

By Marianne Kelly Four talented local artists have joined forces to establish a studio that gives them the chance to paint, uninterrupted by the domestic chores that impose on their time when they paint at home.

Karen Allen, Maria Fowler, Christine DeAth and Chris Keenan are established in their ‘atelier’ or artists workshop on the ground floor of a commercial building in Cascades Road, Pakuranga.

Discovering the site was the catalyst for the collaboration.

It is a substantial area - “so we’re not all on top of each other” - has extensive lighting to show off the art works, and came fitted with hooks for hanging paintings left behind by the previous second-hand clothing tenant.

“It felt so right, it was meant to be,” they say.

The artists combine a wide range of experience and talents and their backgrounds are inter-twined.

Ms Allen has painted for most of her life, specialising in collage, abstract design and garden sculptures. She met Ms Fowler when she [Ms Allen]

was a resident potter at the former Pakuranga Community Centre, now Te Tuhi.

Ms Fowler has also painted for most of her life, including a stint tutoring at the Uxbridge Centre for Arts and Culture, Howick. She describes her work as metaphysical, cosmic, spiritual and visionary – “I’m an intuitive painter,” she says, “and I work with mixed media.”

Ms Keenan started painting when she joined Ms Fowler’s class at Uxbridge 10 years ago.

Her work, she says, is nature based – abstract landscapes and energy art.

Ms DeAth, also in Ms Fowler’s former Uxbridge class, has been painting for the past 15 years and she has developed a love of bright colours. Her work is whimsical and quirky involving characters with stories behind them.

Ms Fowler says each artist paints independently in the new studio.

“We are four artists sharing this space and have stopped painting at home. We can paint here without worrying about the ironing or the food. We call this our atelier.

“We’re sharing this loosely

with no major timetable and we try to be open to the public every day.”

Ms Keenan says the studio offers the artists uninterrupted painting time.

“It’s good being able to go and work on our art somewhere that is not at home.”

Next year the group hopes to offer workshops for budding artists.

Ms Fowler says they will not teach art per se, rather help people to find their own creativity.

Some people, Ms Allen says, “are terrified to put paint on a canvas. So we will not be running structured classes, but simple workshops where people can learn some skills or try something out.

“There will be no rigid timetable. I like to think that we will be complementing Uxbridge. We all appreciate what they do.”

Currently the studio, at 145 Cascades Road, Pakuranga, is open to people to have a browse and talk with the artists. As well as workshops, the group would eventually like to have exhibitions of their own work and that of other invited artists.

It’s the children’s smiles that give Anita Smith the warm fuzzies.

The Eastern Beach mother of three has been an educator with home-based childcare provider, Stems FROM HOME, since 2013.

“I wanted to work and look after my children at home and thought it would be a great way of indulging my passion for children to grow into little people, learning and developing new skills.”

Keeping our word I

t has been a busy seven years, focused on delivering practical results in the areas that are important to Kiwis – the economy, law and order, education and health.

Building a stronger and more prosperous country has always been the ambition. We want to maintain and enhance the great lifestyle we have by making sure we can earn good incomes that compare favourably with the rest of the world.

The list of achievements and accomplishments over these seven years is pleasing, starting with the surplus for 2014/15, a target set following the impact of the Canterbury earthquakes and the GFC. We’ve overseen an economy that’s supporting higher incomes and more jobs, with almost 200,000 jobs created over the past four years.

The average annual wage is now more than $57,000, an increase of $10,000 since 2008,

while households are managing to increase their savings.

The biggest tax reforms in 25 years delivered across-theboard income tax cuts that also left more money in New Zealanders’ back pockets and has helped businesses become more competitive.

Families have been an important part of policy making.

The first real benefit increases in 43 years means 110,000 vulnerable families with children will be better off.

We’re delivering free doctor’s visits and prescriptions for 750,000 children aged 13 and younger. We’re extending paid parental leave.

In health, more people are getting the essential care they need, such as the 50,000 more elective operations a year than in 2008, as well as ensuring cancer patients are getting faster treatment.

Animal laws need sorting out

We need to change our Animal Welfare laws so that they actually protect animals from neglect and abuse, because they clearly don’t at the moment.

If anything, they appear to be protecting the abusers. Our animal welfare standards are at an all-time low and I believe many New Zealanders are unaware of this and still think if you ring the SPCA it will all be fixed.

This is not so, and animals are suffering because they really have very little protection under the law.

I guess people who care (and there are lot of them working quietly behind the scenes) just have to keep reporting, writing and protesting, and if there are enough people doing this maybe something will change.

I hope it’s soon because Karma and her puppies died waiting for help, and there are a lot of Karmas out there waiting. I just hope someone is coming.

I know some people will be saying what is the fuss about, we have so many more problems in the world to worry about.

Plaza just fine, thanks

What is wrong with the Pakuranga Plaza as it is? It is a pleasant covered-in area, with ample parking that can be reached from the various exits.

There are a variety of shops to service most needs and pleasant places to have a bite to eat if you so desire.

I much prefer to shop at Pakuranga than the huge complexes like Botany Town Centre, where the shops are scattered far and wide and you frequently have to park in windy areas far from where you wish to go.

If we wanted the multi-storied buildings described, we would ask for them.

I support Mr Hamlin in his concerns for the area.

Checkerboard tables

It is necessary for old codgers like me to get both exercise and social contact.

One thing you might like to consider is the provision of checkerboard tables.

These are very popular in most parks in UK and Europe and always attract a group of mainly men.

It gives them a both a destination to walk to and conversation, as participant or critic, on a nice day.

Made of concrete with the pattern inlaid and with a couple of mushroom seats, bottle caps for checkers provided by players. They need zero maintenance, and could be cast quite cheaply by a local paving company.

A possible place could be against the wall by the Howick Information Centre and/ or across the road in the little park.

I will put a petition in the Information Centre Saturday.

Breedism is irrational

Re: The tragedy of unwanted dogs and efforts of the people who re-home them (Times, October 22).

Why is New Zealand still in the dark ages over these dogs?

Because it’s the law? That’s despicable.

Take a look at the K C Pet Project to see how all dogs should be handled when it comes to re-homing.

Breedism is an appallingly irrational concept, impossible to enforce, a ridiculously expensive waste of public resources and kills dogs just for their appearance.

That is an atrocity.

They know that someday Nathan Wilson is going to be a part of the political jamboree.

The late Josh Martin, who recently died in a road accident, often used to joke with Nathan saying: “I hope you allow me to mow your lawns when you become Prime Minister one day.”

Being the student representative on the board of trustees at Pakuranga College gave Nathan a chance to meet Mr Williamson at the ground-breaking ceremony in Pakuranga College.

“He mentioned that he had met Paula Bennett, who incidentally is a family friend, and she couldn’t stop talking about me,” says Nathan.

Regardless of the good word from the Cabinet Minister, Nathan is mad about politics.

“I am going to study political science and law at university and then work for around 10 years. I don’t want to be a career politician,” he says definitively explaining he’d like follow John Key’s footsteps by not taking a salary.

Attending the National Party Conference at Waipuna Hotel in 2013 where National Party leaders connected with the Young Nats (Young Nationals is the largest youth political organisation in New Zealand) was a landmark moment in the 17-year-old’s life .

“It was such a special feeling seeing all the big National Party leaders walk past and then there was Paula Bennett.

She was really happy to see me.”

The young go-getter can’t wait to go to Wellington’s Youth Parliament in 2016.

“We get to debate legislation, pass a bill, and make a speech.

It is such a great chance to network.”

Aiming high he says: “I want to get to the ninth floor of the Beehive. I am going to be Prime Minister one day.”

Thanks to enterprising kitchen experts Malcolm and Lesley McLagan, home owners from as far north as Tokerau Beach to as far south as Taupo, have seen no shortage of wonderful memories shared at the kitchen table.

The long-time Howickians launched Jag Kitchens in 2004 after careful planning and established careers in the kitchen and wardrobe industry.

Prior to that, the couple had owned and run their own wholesale bakery in East Tamaki becoming well-versed with the hospitality industry.

Together with their son, Nick, and former colleague and designer Caroline Charman, the Jag team was complete.

Setting up the Jag showroom in Botany’s Danske Mobler Home Centre and a manufacturing plant in Pakuranga’s Rylock Place, the new business

flourished.

After 11 years, the two designers have become six, and the factory has doubled in size, moving to its Harris Road premises in East Tamaki last year.

Designers Frances Fothergill, Liz Martin, Angela Purdy and Ellie McNae join Lesley and Caroline making up the Jag dream team.

Liz and Frances are both former clients and Ellie is the newest addition to the hardworking team who have become like family, says Lesley.

In fact, it’s this family-style approach that strikes a chord with clients.

“People like that the owners are involved and Malcolm just loves talking to people,” says Lesley.

This friendly manner has won Jag the loyalty of many clients.

“Some are on to their second, third and fourth kitchens with us!” says Lesley.

On the home front, the McLagans remain busy too.

Although their three children have all grown up, the five grandchildren, and another on its way, keep the proud grandparents on their toes.

They are also actively involved in Pakuranga Rotary’s youth exchange programme, hosting students from overseas who attend Pakuranga College.

Lesley, a member of Highbrook Rotary, hopes to be more actively involved in the Garden to Table project at Flat Bush Primary School, which Jag has supported in the past.

“Children learn to grow and harvest veges, cook and develop their social skills in eating together – it’s so important to start early.”

And right from the very beginning, Jag has cultivated a relationship with the Times.

“They’ve helped us build our brand out in the community big time.

“It’s been really effective and we hope to continue supporting them. They’ve always been able to tell our story well and people read it with interest.”

Method:

Add the dressing and season to taste.

Serve the capsicums hot from the oven with the salad. ➤ AND MORE: • For a creamy tasting salad

blend the feta and basil with the classic dressing instead of adding separately to the salad.

• Olives, capers and cucumber are great additions to this salad.

• Add some chopped dill into the mince before cooking.

Cut the top from the capsicum and remove the seeds.

Dice up the top of the capsicum.

Mix the mince with the smoked paprika, diced capsicum and season.

Heat a pan on high and cook the mince for 5 minutes until browned.

Cut ½ the feta into 4 slices.

Stuff each capsicum with the mince, a slice of feta on top and roast for about 25 minutes or until cooked.

Toss the drained chickpeas with 1 tsp of smoked paprika and season.

Heat a little oil on high heat and cook the chickpeas for about 5 minutes.

When cooked set aside to cool.

Planting basil in amongst tomato plants will boost the flavour of both plants as they are perfect companions in the garden as well as on the plate!

Tomatoes will benefit from feeding with Tom-A-Rite or Tui Tomato Food, staking and regular watering. All chrysanthemums and dahlias are good to plant now, along with colourful water lilies and other pond plants. It’s also the perfect time to add new season’s hibiscus plants for a real tropical flavour in your garden.

uckland house prices are expected to continue increasing and the number of properties sold will remain unchanged, or even drop, as demand for new housing stock continues to significantly outstrip supply, a new housing market survey concludes.

Among the key findings of the Residential Market Confidence Survey, released by the Property Institute of New Zealand, is a view that despite media speculation to the contrary, further value inflation in Auckland is widely expected with 100 per cent of the Auckland property market experts predicting further increases across all price categories over the next six months.

But less than half surveyed expect an increase in sales volumes in any price category.

The institute’s chief executive Ashley Church says the survey finding is consistent with the institute’s view that Government and Reserve Bank attempts to dull the Auckland house price inflation have largely missed the mark.

“Stricter loan-to-value ratios and tighter rules around property investment appear to be having an impact on sales volumes at the lower end of the market as young couples and investors disappear,” he says.

“But they are having no discernable impact on prices.

“Meanwhile, more and more owners of mid-range and high-end properties are choosing to hold on to

their homes in the hope of maximising their capital gain, constricting an already tight market even further.”

Mr Church says the problem will continue to get progressively worse until the underlying supply issue is dealt with.

“Unless we start making meaningful progress on the construction of new homes in Auckland, all we’re really doing is tinkering and house prices will continue to rise, unabated.”

The Residential Market Confidence Survey is an initiative of the Property Institute. The survey panel is made up of residential and property managers, real estate agents and property finance specialists.

Meanwhile, Mr Church has questioned a proposal from The Treasury to further restrict mortgage lending by banks and has repeated his warning of “unintended consequences”.

Treasury papers, released under the Official Information Act, say that the growing divide between house prices and incomes is a cause for concern and suggest that debtto-income limits could offer an additional way “of managing financial system vulnerability by targeting the likelihood of default”.

The effect of such a policy would be to limit a typical Auckland family to a mortgage of less than $400,000 if New Zealand followed similar rules to those in the UK.

With improvements, the increase could be about 53.7 per cent.

■■ Overall rates for Generation Y’s other trips, such as recreational, were projected to more than double, with a baseline of 18.6 per cent increasing to 42.6 per cent if the status quo is maintained, and 48.8 per cent with improvements. Mr Thomas says introducing smarter pricing mechanisms to reward and retain loyal customers, and adding in desirable extras, such as free WiFi, is likely to create a positive attitude across generations.

It’s all in the technique

W

akaaranga primary school student Brandon Meyer stands out in his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) class, not for skill or technique but for size.

Having joined a mixed martial arts class when he was eight, Brandon was invited to participate in his dad’s adult BJJ class at Auckland MMA a year later.

“I used to come and sit here because my mum was at work and my dad was here so the coach invited me in,” Brandon says.

Punching above his weight has paid off and the 11-year-old has claimed the Australasian Brazilian Jiu Jitsu title for his division at the Pan Pacific Champs in Melbourne last month.

Brandon’s talent and commitment is evident in all his matches, having won every fight including two National titles in BJJ and wrestling.

Winning by points alone, he admits they were very close and very tough matches, “I was really proud,” he says.

According to Brandon’s coach for BJJ, brown belt Van Robertson, he is a treat to train despite being a child in an adult’s class.

“He’s very attentive, he’s got that work ethic where he needs to pay attention and understand what’s being taught. That’s very unusual in a child,” she says. Unlike many of the adults in his class, Brandon also has very good control of his body.

“He’s got as much control as a gymnast,” Ms Robertson says.

This is also one reason Brandon enjoys BJJ so much. “I like it because you use your whole body in it, it’s like chess kind of,” he says.

Not only is he in touch with the physical side of BJJ but according to Ms Robertson he also has an inquisitive and mature mindset.

“He’s really focused and I can reason with him like an adult. He understands the bigger picture,” she says.

lthough there are several candidates, finding an impact second-five of Ma’a Nonu’s quality will be the All Black selectors most difficult task next year.

Upon returning to the Hurricanes after indifferent Super Rugby seasons for the Blues and Highlanders, Nonu has just completed his finest year.

As a powerful player whose strength, sidestep and swerve terrorised defences from the start of his international career, he developed into an intelligent player whose simpatico relationship with Conrad Smith reaped rich rewards.

Having scored two grand tries in the All Blacks 41-13 Eden Park Bledisloe Cup triumph against Australia, his contribution to the

All Blacks World Cup triumph in England and Wales was massive, both on attack and defence.

When the going got tough Nonu got tougher, crashing through packed defences to set up good second phase ball. And when the defence slackened he capitalised with strong, weaving runs.

With Sonny Bill Williams committed to the Rio Olympics sevens team for 2016, Ryan Crotty looks to be Nonu’s most likely test replacement. Like Conrad Smith, Crotty is a smart, dependable player who passes and tackles well and takes good options.

Interestingly, however, Crotty played his ITM rugby this season for the champion Canterbury team as a centre outside exciting newcomer Rob Thompson, whose try scoring knack reflected

With Daniel Carter bowing out of international rugby as its player of the year, New Zealand is fortunate in having three gifted first-fives eager to fill his boots.

At Super Rugby level this year Lima Sopoaga was the most complete with a superior goal kicking ratio, had an outstanding debut in his Ellis Park outing and was unlucky not to have won World Cup selection.

However the injured Aaron Cruden remains the best playmaker with his ability to make breaks and set up team-mates for tries with his clever passes.

That is something supersub Beauden Barrett needs to develop. Should he do so and couple it with his electrifying pace, he could become sensational.

With Julian Savea, Nehe Milner-Skudder, Waisake Naholo, Aaron and Ben Smith absolutely world class, the All Blacks backline should remain a potent force for many years to come.

Certainly Michael Chieka has worked wonders with the Wallabies in a short time. But to award him The International Coach of the Year award ahead of Steve Hansen was a sick joke when you consider Hansen has an overall record of 49 wins, three losses and two draws since he took charge four years ago.

f Lieutenant-General Sir John Moore (1761-1809) had, as a young fellow, donned his uniform, marched into battle, obeyed the orders of his superiors, and gone about with not a thought in his head, he probably wouldn’t have risen to the rank of Lieutenant-General.

He was a man who never fought a battle without sustaining an injury, nor did he live a long life. But Moore is remembered as the founder of the Light Infantry; this success can be attributed to him being a keen student of both war strategy and human nature. He was not afraid to make changes.

Howick’s Moore Street, named for this brave soldier, was once, briefly, home to a school. Previous attempts at public or common schooling in the area had not been wildly successful, in part because of the lengthy trek required to attend the combined Pakuranga & Howick School.

The locals should have been pleased when classes began in an unused Catholic school in Picton Street, but strained relations between

the religious groups heralded an early end to this episode in Howick’s schooling history.

The solution, it seemed, was to hold school lessons in the courthouse-library building in Moore Street.

However, once begun tensions still simmered and classes were conducted with a curtain down the middle of the small room to separate Catholics from Protestants.

Eventually a new Howick school opened in Picton Street (at Fencible Way) with two classrooms, two teachers, and about 60 students, with just over half attending regularly.

It is said that if Lieutenant Moore had not been killed at the Battle of Corunna, he could well have been Britain’s most well-known general, even ahead of the Duke of Wellington.

ust as fashions change, John Russell Menswear is marking a new era with a big bang on Midnight Madness.

The Howick fixture in Moore Street has been providing men with fashionable clothing for more than 30 years.

However, it is now time to move in a new direction and John Russell Menswear will now focus on providing school uniforms to the local area. It is the end of an era, but it’s how the shop has evolved over the last few years.

As a result, the family-owned and operated business is clearing its shelves with a sale tomorrow, offering HALF PRICE on all men’s clothing including shirts, trousers and accessories from well-known names. Levi’s jeans are $80 with rain checks available tomorrow (November 13) only.

Originally founded in 1966 by David Honeybun, David Honeybun Menswear was bought by John and Sue in 1984, and was renamed John Russell Menswear shortly after John and Sue say the past three decades

have been totally rewarding and they aren’t going anywhere soon.

“So many people have stepped through our doors and it’s been great getting to know many of the wonderful people in the local area.”

While this marks the end of the menswear side of the business, John says people can still make special orders.

“We’ll still be able to order specific brands of shirts, trousers, jumpers and jeans etc on behalf of our customers”.

Meanwhile John Russell Menswear continues to supply uniforms for many local schools as well as a range of school footwear, socks, school bags, hats and much more – all of which can be tried on in store or purchased online. Layby options as well as WINZ payments are also available.

Open six days a week with late nights on Thursdays, the long-standing clothing specialist will launch the sale at 9am tomorrow and will remain open till late.
