Franceska Banga of Farm Cove has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and the community.

Ms Banga is an internationally recognised venture capital investment specialist, and is recognised as a pioneer in state sector venture capital investment in New Zealand.

Garnet Donald Tregonning and Clifford Henry (Cliff) Deery were also recognised.

Ms Banga is the outgoing chief executive of the New Zealand Venture Investment Fund, and through this role has overseen partnerships with 10 venture capital funds, 15 angel investment networks, and has been involved with direct and indirect investments into more than 200 high growth companies. She has contributed her business expertise in other forums such as the New Zealand Capital Markets Development Taskforce, and chaired the New Zealand Private Equity and Venture Capital Association Board.

She has been the Chief Advisor Strategy for the Ministry of Research, Science, and Technology, and Health Director for the Treasury.

Her expertise is also recognised internationally, and she is a member of the International Public Policy Forum on Venture Capital, and is a trustee of the International Centre for Entrepreneurship Foundation.

Ms Banga has also used her expertise to benefit charity and not-forprofit organisations, and is a Trustee for the Fred Hollows Foundation, and was previously an independent director for the Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind, which she assisted in the transition to a standalone trust.

In 2014 she received the Auckland University of Technology Business School Individual Leadership Award and a year earlier the New Zealand Private Equity and Venture Capital Association inaugural Industry Leadership Award. ➤ Turn to Page 5

Hunua MP puts his money where his mouth is for project

H

unua MP Andrew Bayly is a conservationist at heart. Why else would he and son James trek all the way to the North Pole dragging a 40kg sled, burning thousands of calories a day, to raise awareness for the Hunua Kokako Recovery Project?

The conservation project to save the endangered Kokako bird recently received a massive boost due to the fundraising efforts of the local MP. The adventurous Mr Bayly presented Conservation Minister Maggie Barry with a $10,000 cheque for the Hunua Kokako Recovery Project, a joint DOC and Auckland Council initiative, that relies on the work of volunteers to help protect the rare bird. “What’s unique is that much of the funding was raised through the generosity of countless Hunua local and National’s environmental wing BlueGreens,” says Mr Bayly.

“We spent five days dragging a 40kg sled 111km, burning 8000 calories a day. We actually completed the trek three days quicker than expected.”

Mr Bayly says the Kokako recovery project has been restoring the local population for decades. “In 1994, there was only one breeding pair of Kokako in the Hunua Ranges and the bird was close to local extinction. Thanks to the

project there are now close to 60 pairs and the birds are beginning to flourish in the area,” he says.

Approximately 25 volunteers are the backbone of the project.

“Locals give up their time to scale rugged Hunua bush and check the 2000 bait stations and 200 traps every week.”

The money will allow volunteers

to buy quality equipment needed for their work such as clothing, outerwear, packs and boots.

“Pest control is also a major part of the operation. A recent 1080 drop by DOC in the area has enabled Kokako to expand their habitat (which now encompasses approximately 1700ha) and increase their population,” he says.

Meet the change advocate

en Dowdle’s CV would give any top politicians a run for their votes.

The young social change advocate, environmentalist and motivational speaker lobbies with minsters, head honchos of large corporations and not-for-profit organisations as he fights for change.

Little wonder then that the former Pakuranga College head boy has been invited as a Global Changemaker at the prestigious Global Youth Summit in Zurich Switzerland from July 24-30.

“From 4000 applicants they selected only 60,” says the astute 21-one year old.

The summit will have 60 Changemakers from all over the world for a life changing week of skill building, networking and brainstorming about community projects that impact environmental and social change.

What started four years ago in Pakuranga College as a high school project has Ben lobbying with top government officials in New Zealand and Australia as he leads a wide political campaign `Unmask Palm Oil’ for mandatory labelling of palm oil.

“We have been running it for the last five years which is a long political time frame,” says the university student who is doing a conjoint degree and also coaches the junior boys competing in A grade Under 15 at Pakuranga College.

Talking about the long, arduous

journey to bring about change he says: “It started when I was co-chairing the environmental council in college and learnt about a common ingredient in food called palm oil. The ingredient can cause large scale deforestation which leads to carbon emissions and loss of wildlife in South East Asia.”

Whilst working on the project, the team discovered that strangely enough, palm oil doesn’t have to be labelled on the ingredient list in New Zealand and Australia. It means that when people buy cooking oil, it is difficult to tell if it contains palm oil, let alone know whether it has been produced responsibly.

“What we thought would take

us weeks, has taken us years as we’ve spoken to companies, business groups, politicians. While our campaign got incredible results and there’s been a high level of public support, we didn’t realise how complex the food labelling legislation really is,” he says.

Meeting the Australian Minister for Environment Greg Hunt was a humbling experience.

“He was very supportive and it was quite an honour to meet him,” says Ben who has been making presentations to the New Zealand Parliamentary Commerce Select Committee.

He has also been working with major companies including Coles, Woolworths and Nestle whilst maintaining a close work-

ing relationship with organisations including WWF Australia, Zoos Victoria, Wellington Zoo, the Australian Public Health Association and Taronga Zoo. “After a frustrating set of delays, the Australians and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food regulations has committed to November/December 2016 as the meeting date for when they will decide whether mandatory labelling of vegetable oils will progress,” he says.

In the meanwhile, Ben continues as a keynote speaker at schools, colleges, young leadership summits empowering youth to work hard, have a vision, be resilient— even as he prepares for the Global Youth Summit in Zurich.

Girls’ XI aim for big turn-out for art sale Macleans College Girls 1st XI hockey team is swapping its hockey sticks for art this weekend.

The team is holding its their annual fundraising art sale on June 11 and 12 to help them get to the National secondary schools hockey tournament in Tauranga in September.

As well as helping cover the cost of accommodation and other expenses, the student-run event also helps support local New Zealand artists, with over 400 works for sale.

ven on the gloomiest of winter days, the Marina Cantina is colourful, alive and vibrant. You’ll shake off any winter blues as soon as you step into this little Mexican-inspired sanctuary with an innovative and modern menu.

“It’s right beside Grangers and really like a naughty little brother,” says Gina Henry. Richard Cooke, Gina and her husband, Clinton, are the trio fronting the two businesses and have been very successful in making the marina the local “place to be.”

The Marina Cantina is a just few steps through from Grangers and shares the superb marina views, but instead of a stylish, nautical décor it is fabulously funky.

With turquoise-painted walls along with touches of sunshine yellow and lit up by a string of coloured lights, the space looks set for a fiesta. The welcoming décor includes an array of very Mexican-style paintings and icons, lashings of gaudy artificial flowers and south-of-the-border wall friezes.

The decorators obviously had a ball creating it and it works very well. As the partners intended, it’s a happy place.

The one large communal table (seats up to 16 “very friendly” guests) and the other settings are all very comfy and can cater for up to 70 people for a function.

“It’s our spin on Mexican food,” says Richard, who designed the menu with Gina. “We have something for everyone and promote healthy options with plenty of gluten-free and vegetarian meals

The big favourites on the menu include Cantina Loaded Fries (with pulled pork, chipotle mayo, queso cheese and jalapenos) and Low and Slow Spiced Brisket Nachos (with green salsa and curds).

From the Ensaladas (salads), the Little Pinky is the big seller.

This is made with beetroot, red cabbage, pickled onion, red quinoa, carrot and black sesame with a buttermilk ranch dressing.

And from the line-up of Burritos (all selling at $15), the favourite is currently grilled chicken.

All wrapped in a tortilla, this

includes baby spinach, corn, picked onions, nuts and seeds and kewpie.

Developed talent comes home for June

Peace run visits college

Where wildebeests roam, one former member of the Times ‘family’ is sure to follow. However, during June, there’s no place like home for multiaward-winning wildlife photographer, David Lloyd.

The former Howickian (now resident in London) will be on hand during the opening of his latest exhibition titled As Long As There Are Animals at Howick’s Monterey Art Gallery, now until June 25.

Showcasing a range of works, mostly taken on safari in Africa, the exhibition showcases photos designed to capture the very personalities of the animals they portray.

The longest and largest grassroots relay for peace in history graced Howick College last week (Tuesday May 24).

The Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run will cover over 3500 kilometres of New Zealand’s roads and highways, involving some 60,000 school children nationwide between May-June 2016.

Head of outdoor education at Howick College Dave Mason and his students ran with the Peace Torch from Mellons Bay Reserve to Howick College before the ceremony.

Riverhills School and Pakuranga Heights School also participated in their own Peace Runs.

The Peace Run was launched in April 2016 in New York with one flaming torch lighting over 140 Peace Torches.

Each of these are then returned to their respective nations to be carried on an inspiring journey of Peace.

Unlike other organised running events, the Peace Run does not seek to raise any funds or to promote any political or religious agenda. It simply operates at a grassroots level to inspire people from all walks of life to help foster a better, brighter future for all of humanity.

In schools the Peace Run team works together with teachers to promote harmonious living between people of different cultures, nationalities and beliefs through school presentations and programs.

“This event offers everyone an opportunity to take a small step for global understanding and to feel part of a larger world family. We are all torch bearers for harmony in our daily lives – the run brings this understanding to life,” said team member Daniel Rubin.

People from all faiths and nationalities have been drawn to participate in this event, which was founded by Sri Chinmoy in 1987.

Author, musician, humanitarian and former athlete, Sri Chinmoy encouraged sport as a powerful instrument in promoting global harmony and his international marathon team organises over 600 athletic events and multi-day races annually.

“Each good heart champions the cause of Peace,” he said.

Past Peace Run patrons have included All Black coach Graham Henry, Allison Roe, Precious McKenzie, John Walker, Rod Dixon, the late Arthur Lydiard and Ian Ferguson.

They join a long list of world leadrs including Mikhail Gorbachev, Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa as well as Carl Lewis, Jon Bon Jovi, Paul McCartney and Arnold Schwarzenegger who have supported the event over the past twenty years.

Lanting, Mr Lloyd told the Times during an interview in 2012 that his take on shooting is one which can inspire everyone.

“I take pictures that will look good on someone’s wall, rather than photographing the kill. People don’t want animals with blood all over them on their walls,” he said.

Gallery director, Maureen Crombie, says she is delighted to see David and his work return to Howick. She’s expecting this exhibition to attract a great deal of interest from across the city.

Garnet Donald Tregonning of Howick was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to orthopaedics.

Mr Tregonning has been a member of the Orthopaedic Consultant Staff at Counties Manukau Health since 1975 and has made a significant contribution to orthopaedics in New Zealand.

He was a member of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association Education Committee from 1991 to 1993 and Chaired the Committee from 1994 to 1997.

Early in his career he introduced a modern method of fracture management to New Zealand, which has since become widely established.

He was involved with teaching this technique for many years and was a Senior Trustee of the AO/ASIF Foundation (Association for Osteosynthesis/Association for the Study of Internal Fixation) education group from 2000 to 2012.

He has been course director for these courses in New Zealand and the Pacific. He was Chairman of the Board of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in the late 1990s and was a New Zealand Examiner in Orthopaedic Surgery from

1998 to 2005, the last two years of which as Chief Examiner.

Mr Tregonning was Head of Department of the Middlemore Orthopaedic Department for 10 years and is a past

staffing and is currently at 116 percent.

He has served on a range of community, school and agricultural groups including the Clevedon School Agricultural Day Committee, Agricultural and Pastoral Association Judging, Poll Dorset Breeders Association, Kawakawa Bay Junior Sailing Club Committee, Kawakawa Bay Community Association.

He volunteers his time to the Kawakawa Bay Health Clinic and its First Response Unit to assist with fundraising and occasionally on late night calls. Mr Deery is an active Justice of the Peace and makes his land available to local groups for various fundraising events and training.

The Howick SPCA Op Shop volunteers and customers celebrated five years in Howick with cake and balloons.

Since opening in Howick on April 30, 2011, the local community has helped raise vital funds for the SPCA by shopping, donating and volunteering at the Op Shop.

All funds raised at the Op Shop go directly to SPCA Auckland, where they are used to operate the SPCA Animal Village in Mangere and to protect sick, injured, lost, abused and abandoned animals throughout the Auckland region.

The shop’s presence in the area helps to keep locals aware of the SPCA and encourages those who are looking to welcome a pet into their home to adopt an animal in need.

The shop’s manager is supported by about 35 volunteers who usually do one shift a week.

Ferry parking problems unresolved

A

combination of commuter ferries, the Waiheke vehicular service, boat marinas and recreational trailer boats from throughout the Super City launching at the free public ramp has been getting up Half Moon Bay residents’ noses for years.

But efforts to alleviate individual problems seem to be compounding the big issue on peoples’ minds – car parking.

The latest issue is the loss of 26 car parks on both sides of Pigeon Mountain Road to accommodate changes to the Prince Regent Drive/Sunderlands Road intersection and to install metering signals to improve traffic flow in evening peak commuter times.

Half Moon Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association chairman, Keith Ingram says: “We need more car parks, we should not be losing them.

“We are living in an area which

is very car park sensitive and all Auckland Transport is doing is removing car parks as an answer to the problem.”

At an association-organised public meeting in Half Moon Bay, Howick Local Board transport portfolio member, Steve Udy said the community needed to think extremely carefully about car parks.

Local resident Richard Poole, who is also chairman of the Greater East Tamaki Business Association (GETBA), said planners should be looking at the big picture: “Commuter ferries, buses from Lloyd Elsmore Park to the car ferry, freight, trucks, while 40 per cent of Auckland’s pleasure boats launch here.

“Pleasure boating is the second biggest recreational spend in Auckland so we need to promote boat launching other than here where there is an enormous gridlock. I suggest a sea wall and land fill west of the new pier area.”

Local Board chairman David Collings agreed, saying the original Half Moon Bay ferry terminal masterplan had a $50 million price tag and ramifications for the public boat ramp. It involved dredging and reclaiming some land.

“This is why the board has used $2.5 million to get a pier and pontoon underway. There is a bigger plan but it is all about dollars. It’s not that we don’t want to do it, it’s all about funding. The Half Moon Bay area is a dog’s breakfast with freight and ferries. But we have no magic bullets.”

Other proposals included moving recreational boating to the end of Musick Point, while Point England was also being discussed, he said.

Mr Udy said reclamations required many resource consents

and were very expensive to build.

“I am not confident that we could get that through. So we have a limited amount of space here.

“We could consider pay and display. I would like to charge $10 to park here and provide a free shuttle. A boat launching fee of $10 could be considered too.”

But Mr Collings said he was against pay and display at the moment.

“It will put people off using the ferry. We need quick shuttles or should encourage people to car pool.”

Meanwhile residents of Compass Point Way are fed up with Waiheke commuter cars parked permanently in their street. A resident told the meeting at least 20-25 permanent Waiheke cars were parked “and we are tired of looking at the same car for more than two weeks.”

While a 120 minute parking restriction has been installed on one side of the street Mr Udy said the local board wanted the restriction on both sides, but Auckland Transport said it could not do so.

“There should be a daytime or 12-hour parking limit. If we go to Waiheke we can only park a car there for 24 hours,” he said.

Introduction of short-term parking at the terminal was a short-term stop gap, Mr Ingram said.

“All it’s done is shift the problem further afield. AT is not looking at the bigger picture around people movements.”

ucklands Beach Lions love making spectacles of themselves – or more correctly, they love making spectacles happen for others, especially children.

For 14 years the club has been donating money to the Middlemore Foundation’s eyeglass fund, which allows Kidz First Children’s Hospital to make sure children who might otherwise go without, get the glasses they need.

While there is government help available, it is once only, so children who break their glasses or need a change of prescription, sometimes go without.

“Many of the kids helped have no idea what it took to make their glasses happen, but our people have seen lives changed,” he said.

“Maybe it’s the views out Bucklands-Howick way that make the people so interested in good eyesight, because the Prospect of Howick has been making regular contributions for more than a decade too.”

Hospice fundraiser a big hit More than $6000 was raised at the recent Pakuranga Park Village Totara Hospice dinner.

The fundraiser attracted around 170 people who sat down to a sumptuous three-course dinner. Among the guests was former Howick Borough Mayor Morrin Cooper. Master of ceremonies was Martin Oettli, general manager of operations with retirement villages company Real Living Group.

School gets $7.3m cash injection

here was an announcement of scale made on Wednesday morning at Ormiston Primary School by Hekia Parata, Minister of Education and Nikki Kaye, Associate Minister of Education along with Andrew Bayly MP for Hunua.

Talking about the huge injection of cash they were going to make to the school, Ms Parata spoke to students telling them that the money she has managed to get from the Prime Minister is the highest ever in education.

“We have got $11 billion for education, which is more than the police, transport, foreign affairs and conservation, all put together.

“We are going to put $7.3 million in your school to expand it.

We try and do big things — have bigger, warm and flexible learning spaces.”

On seeing the big show of hands, she said, “All of you have big brains and are very clever children. That’s why we have to give you the best and also make sure we invest in professional

development of the teachers so that they can give their best.”

but now “with the help of helpers like Nikki Kaye and Andrew Bayly there was going to be a lot of development in the education infrastructure in the area, including a playground.”

Ms Kaye said there was a huge growth trajectory for Auckland and the school in particular.

“Your school is so popular and now has 290 students. It has grown so fast!

“We are also going to have a new Ormiston Junior College start early next year so that you don’t have to travel to other parts of the city.”

It led one of the students to ask: “When are you going to start Ormiston University?” which evoked laughter and had the Associate Minister of Education say that perhaps they can plan it in the next budget!

Giving an overview of the education budget, Ms Kaye said they had $150m for new schools and growth across New Zealand, as well as investment in publicprivate partnerships. The budget has provided for $882.5 million in school property.

Learning leader of Ormiston Primary School Heath McNeil said that this week it would be his two year anniversary with the school.

“Though the school is not twoyears-old, I was appointed six months prior to the school starting. When I first arrived, all I saw is this pillar and flat land.

“The real magic happened when we introduced learners to our school and now we will continue to collaborate with the growing community and the Ministry of Education.”

Giving a glimpse of what it is to be inside an Olympic village he spoke of the sense of pride every athlete feels at the opening ceremony. “However, this time we may have to give it a miss since the opening ceremony takes six hours and we will be competing the next day. If you are competing in the same week as the opening ceremony you don’t go for it since it gets too tiring.”

There were plenty of intelligent questions asked by the students who wanted to know more about his fitness regime and what he would do after he hung his boots. “I would love to be connected to the sport I am passionate about and coach the Olympic team,” ended Mr McAleese.

very day is a good-time day for 100-year-old Rhys Runciman whose philosophy on life is to take one day at a time.

“I always see the funny side,” he says, “but I get into trouble often.

“I say what I think. I have no time for PC. It gives me a pain.”

The Botany Downs centenarian still walks one-two kilometres a day. He’s the oldest, but regarded as the fittest, at the HBH (Howick Baptist Healthcare) Day Care programme in Howick which he attends twice a week because, “I felt I was getting a bit remote from people”.

He’s also the only member of the Pakuranga Christian Fellowship congregation in Udys Road, Pakuranga, who has turned 100 and still turns up every Sunday. About 140 friends and family attended a special birthday party for him at the church.

They included his son Roly and his wife Gail, of East Tamaki Heights; his daughter Lenore and her husband Howard Heap, of Palmerston North, along with nine grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

Mr Runciman was born in Mt Eden and went to Mt Eden, Avondale, Papatoetoe and Mt Albert primary schools and then Mt Albert Grammar school. The family followed his dad who managed the Kauri Timber Company then based in Fanshawe Street, Central Auckland.

He started out as a mechanic but was not a fan of the work so moved into heavy engineering. He got a steam engine ticket which gave him one of the most important jobs in saw mills, driving all the mill machinery.

He spent two months in hospital with pleurisy which ruled him out for active service in World War II. Instead he ended up in sawmills, in wartime regarded as an “essential” industry. While he was in hospital in Rotorua he met a nurse Ruth Lenore who was

to become his wife. He had to wait two years for her to finish her nursing training before they could marry.

They were living in Edgecumbe, Bay of Plenty when their children, Roly and Lenore, were born and moved on to Carters’ mill in Maramarua where the children grew up.

“It was a milling town then,” Roly says, “where Dad looked after the steam engines. But the town no longer exists.”

When it was time for further education, the family shifted back to Auckland, Mr Runciman transferring to the Carter Merchants timber mill in Morningside. Home was in Mt Wellington where the couple remained until Mr Runciman retired.

In 1987 they bought their Botany Downs home where Mr Runciman lives today.

“The third-acre section in Mt Wellington was too much for the old bloke, and this house was brand new,” he says.

“Ruth saw a pantry with a door on it and said ‘that’s what I want’.”

In retirement Mr Runciman took up wood turning making articles from three-legged tables to toys for his grandchildren and now great-grandchildren, along with gifting them to many charities.

He only recently stopped packing for the Mt Wellington Community Churches Food Bank and received a volunteer community service award in 2004.

Along with walking each day, he is also a fan of the Auckland public libraries audio books which, his family says, provides a brilliant service, especially when old eyes are failing.

“Otherwise he’s good as gold,” they say. He cooks freezer-ready meals supplied

by Lenore and Gail, makes his own porridge for breakfast every morning and custard from scratch. He can throw a roast dinner together and is generally independent.

ompleting a 100km walk through Whakatane in torrential rain is mad enough, but Susan Mudford and her team Clarkies Crew, also managed to raise more than $16,000 for Oxfam at the same time.

Topping the fundraising table for the 2016 NZ Oxfam Trailwalker has given Clarkies Crew the chance to visit some of Oxfam’s projects in Vanuatu at the end of June. Chris Clark, Peter Clark, Susan Mudford and Stuart Mudford

completed the Trailwalker at the beginning of April in 24 hours and 44 minutes. Despite being 44 minutes out of their target time, the crew admit that due to the frustrating course, unrelenting rain and darkness, their achievement was outstanding.

The seven stage event saw them traipse along the length of Ohope Beach, climb 3000km and trek through streams and kilometres of cow poo in the changing conditions from torrential rain to

darkness. “It was an epic event in every sense of the word,” Susan said.

Clarkies crew are indebted to their support crew, Ashleigh Clark, Tim Mudford and William Webster who were there behind the scenes every step of the way setting up camp, feeding them, and providing dry clothes and shoes and the much-needed moral support. Whilst lost toe nails, over-used muscles, chaffing, infected blisters and peeling soles are still heeling, they are

reminders of what the team achieved. “Our discomfort was temporary. Many people don’t have what we take for granted as the basics of life,” Susan said.

Oxfam’s work in Vanuatu includes training and supporting farmers to establish and grow small-scale market gardens and new income opportunities. They are also providing people with safe clean water, sanitation and hygiene education; and training people in skills to earn them a living.

Train our kids young

A programme, ‘Why Am I?’, appeared on our television screens last night (Tuesday, May 3).

It told of what is said to be ’one of the world’s most important scientific studies about humans’ which has been carried out in Dunedin for the past 44 years.

Called the Dunedin Study, it began in 1972 when Otago University started following the lives of 1037 people born between April 1972 and March 1973. Every year since, most of these people have spent a day undergoing a series of tests and answering questions.

A major finding of the study is that early life is a reliable indicator of what sort of people they are likely to become as adults. This ought not to be a surprise. The Bible says: “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Don’t you sometimes wish... If only!?

We could avoid a lot of heartache if we obeyed that wisdom and took better, conscious care of our children.

The programme continues on our screens for three more weeks.

Sort out the parking

We have just today (Sunday June 5) returned from a lovely day in town attending the Queen’s Birthday weekend celebrations at The Cloud.

We used the ferry to transport us from Half Moon Bay which at the time seemed like a good idea to avoid congestion on the roads – big mistake!

After driving round and round the Half Moon Bay carpark, unable to find a car park for a car despite there being many, many empty trailer-only car parks.

We were fortunate to have someone leave so managed to get a park for our car.

On our return to the carpark at 3.30pm we were absolutely astonished to find people returning to their cars which, due to

Why did they not construct something a little less ostentatious and finish the roading and footpaths to an acceptable standard at the time.

I have not seen even one comment from our mayor or any of his 21 councillors that criticises Government inaction on these factors.

“From a social perspective the traditional suburb can create issues of social isolation and social disconnection, and this is true across the age spectrum,” he says.

“The golden bullet for intensification is finding that balance between living space and social space – places that help us moderate our interactions with people without having to retreat entirely.

“If done well, people will naturally develop a sense of community and trust in that community, which will in turn lead to a sense of belonging, pride and ownership.”

Mr Rigby visualises a future city where an elderly

person can downsize into an affordable apartment in the community they lived in their whole life, without needing to move away to the less expensive fringes of the region.

“We also need to think about the in-between places as we intensify; the bench in a neighbourhood street, the safe and easily traversed walkway, the rooftop garden or courtyard in an apartment block, the shared driveway in a row of townhouses – all the places where people can meet and socially interact with each other,” he says.

“This is the key to developing accessible and agefriendly cities.”

presented to the committee on her thesis, ‘Quality of urban life and intensification: understanding housing choices, tradeoffs and the role of urban amenities’.

She says urban amenities are ‘incredibly important’ in mitigating any negative social impacts of intensification because the accessibility of them to residents directly relates to neighbourhood satisfaction; how happy people are living in their neighbourhoods.

“We can’t lose sight of how people actually use their surroundings and how they want to use them,” she says.

“This is particularly relevant to council planners, developers, urban designers and architects.”

evelopers and urban designers are being urged to make social connectedness a baseline requirement in all planning for the Super City.

Alex Johnston, deputy chair of Auckland Council’s youth advisory panel and Russell Rigby, deputy chair of the seniors advisory panel, gave a joint presentation to the council’s community development and safety committee meeting sharing bookend views on intensification from both ends of the age spectrum.

Councillor John Watson who chaired the meeting said to create the world’s most liveable city, everyone from the person drawing up the blueprints to the person giving the rubber stamp needed to understand, genuinely and completely, how people will use a space once it is built.

“That means thinking broader than a residential dwelling,” he said. “It means adding new amenities, adding transport links and adding places for people to ‘live’ outside the four walls of their home.”

Mr Johnston says: “If we look back at 1950s New Zealand, and particularly Auckland, we were embracing the idea of suburban subdivisions as a retreat from the more crowded city, and Auckland has continued to

Discreet LED lighting sets mood These days, patios and decks are outdoor-living areas that are extensions of the home.

They can be enjoyed until late into the evening, especially if the outdoor lighting is designed well.

Good lighting is primarily a safety issue, although sconces, floor lamps, recessed lighting and other light sources also give a garden a unique and welcoming atmosphere.

For mood lighting, the trend is towards LED technology.

Efficient and environmentally friendly, LED lighting comes in a variety of colours, which makes it easy to create the perfect mood. This technology even allows for a lighting

system that changes colour at will changing the mood to suit the occasion.

However, lighting should be discreet and create a soft, cosy atmosphere, much like moonlight would.

Consequently, installing lights under chairs or armrests, or on risers, or using them to highlight the patio door or the flower beds, are all great ideas.

The patio and garden sparkles in the summer sun, but what about when it’s dark? Well-planned lighting is essential for the enjoyment and appreciation of any outdoor space.

Outdoor lighting is still important, even after everyone

has gone to bed. One of the best ways to protect a property against intruders is to have a clear view of the garden at all times. A motion-detector spotlight is a great option and only uses electricity when required.

When it comes time to plan the lighting for outdoor areas, think about how these places are used once the sun goes down. This will enables choice of the best location for the one or two main lights that will illuminate evening activities.

The key is to ensure good visibility for activities without spoiling the magic of the evening with too much bright light.

easures in a new Government policy to tackle housing affordability problems are not inconsistent with work Auckland Council has been doing, according to Mayor Len Brown and Deputy-Mayor Penny Hulse.

The Government’s proposed National Policy Statement (NPS) on Urban Development Capacity requires councils to ensure land supply for housing and business keeps pace with growth, Environment, Building and Housing Minister, Dr Nick Smith says.

Mr Brown and Ms Hulse say the proposals will provide a useful tool to measure and meet demand and are not inconsistent with the council’s Future Urban Land Use Strategy and the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan (PAUP).

The NPS requires councils to provide sufficient land for new housing and business to match projected growth in their region, city or district plans.

Councils must monitor and respond to housing affordability data, building and resource consent data, and value of land on the urban boundaries.

They must take into account the difference between

planned and commercially feasible development capacity and provide for over-supply to ensure 20 per cent short to medium-term competition and 15 per cent in the long-term.

Infrastructure must be coordinated and consenting processes must be focused on customers.

And, the policy says, councils must recognise the national significance of ensuring sufficient land is available over local interests.

“This policy is about a culture change to support development that connects planning decisions to economics, ensures plans are regularly updated and recognises the national importance of housing,” Dr Smith says.

“This new urban development policy is part of the Government’s systematic dismantling of Auckland’s Metropolitan Urban Limit (MUL),” he says. It’s supported by the establishment of Special Housing Areas (SHAs), a fast-track process for the new Auckland Unitary Plan to be completed in September, and the Resource Management Amendment (RMA) Bill that adds functions for councils to provide development capacity.

“New Zealand’s decline in housing affordability and own-

ership is decades old and there are no instant or easy fixes,” he says. “This systematic reform of our planning system is an important component of the long-term solution.”

Mr Brown says the PAUP already includes proposals to open up 11,000 hectares of land (about one-and-a-half times the size of Hamilton) outside the current MUL to cater for growth over the next 30 years.

It has the potential to provide for 110,000 new houses.

Property Institute of New Zealand chief executive, Ashley Church, says the NPS is just one of many steps that will need to be taken if house price inflation is to be reduced.

He cautions that freeing up land will not bring down house prices, but agrees that it may be a factor in slowing down the rate at which house prices increase.

■■ The draft National Policy Statement on Urban Development Capacity is open for submission until July 15.

■■ Finance Minister Bill English has confirmed the Government is discussing income-related restrictions on mortgage lending with the Reserve Bank. If the policy was applied in Auckland it would limit a typical family to a mortgage of no more than $400,000.

lanning is underway by a group of community representatives for more walking, cycling and horse riding trails in the Beachlands/ Maraetai area.

Following community feedback, the Franklin Local Board has made it a priority to plan a network of trails across the local board area.

Beachlands/Maraetai is selected first for the project, and the board will work in partnership with the community to develop a greenways plan.

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously.

Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques.

Botany Swarm take a hit from Stampede The Botany Swarm have had a battering in their first two games of the season against the Skycity Stampede who took wins on both days.In a tight match on Saturday with both teams head to head on the score board, the Skycity Stampede managed to take a 4-3 win.

Sunday’s rematch saw the Stampede pick up the pace and prevail 5-2 over the Swarm.The Stampede scored early and held

the lead 4-1 after an unassisted goal from Kyle Jonsson.Jamie Lawrence added another goal for the Swarm but the Stampede was quick to respond with more goals to keep their lead. Trio off to baseball world series

aylor Irwin, Traye Wildbore, and Tui Amosa from Howick Pakuranga Hawks Baseball Club will go up against some of the best 12-year-old baseball players in the world at the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Maryland.

After a five-day long camp earlier this year, 15 players were selected for the All Star U13 Team to travel to the World Series in the United States in late July. Year 8 Sommerville Intermediate student

Taylor Irwin will be attending the competition for the second time after experiencing personal success last year.

“I got player of the game against Mexico who were world champions, so that was pretty awesome,” he says.

The reality of the international baseball scene will certainly hit home for the New Zealand boys as Howick Pakuranga Baseball’s Mike Irwin says: “There’s a lot of prestige to it.”

Taylor says experiencing the standard of baseball last year in the United States was at times a bit scary.

“I think the fastest pitcher I’d ever faced in New Zealand threw around maybe 66 miles per hour and we get over there and the Mexico pitcher [threw] 82 [miles per hour],” he says. Farm Cove Intermediate student Traye Wildbore is proud to have made the team with only a few years of

baseball experience under his belt.

“I didn’t make it last year so it’s a big accomplishment for me,” he says.

“I haven’t really played baseball for long. I played softball for my whole life pretty much and I just turned to baseball about a year ago.”

Taylor, Traye and Tui will continue training three times a week along with non-travelling reserves from Howick Pakuranga Baseball William Keal, Hunter Southee and Cole Joyce before heading to the competition in July.

Muhammad Ali truly ‘The Greatest’ Agnew’s Angle George Foreman will never be forgotten. Nor will his 1962 nontitle bout against Henry Cooper in London when Cooper’s left hook knocked him through the ropes.

Ali surprised me on his visit to New Zealand 1979 when he claimed Leon Spinks was the best figher he had fought, rather than his final conqueror, Larry Holmes.

“Why Spinks,” I asked.

“Because he kept his word and gave me a return title fight,” he said.

“What about Larry Holmes?”

“Nah…he can’t talk.”

Unlike Pakuranga’s Lance Revell who went two rounds with Ali and landed a couple of solid rights, I never traded punches with him in the ring. But I did sway away from one I thought was coming my way in the lobby of an Auckland hotel.

However it never arrived. It was simply a hypnotic eye feint,

Meanwhile it’s nice to see Sonny Bill Williams join old friend Tana Umaga and sign a three-year Super Rugby contract with the Blues where his exquisite offloading skill is just what the doctor ordered.

The affable Umaga was SBW’s first rugby union coach when he left league and the Canterbury Bulldogs and he’s served a long apprenticeship adjusting to the 15-man game.

Although he has two Rugby World Cup gold medals, it wasn’t until last year that he looked to have mastered most of the differences the union game brought to his education.

Having done so much to hone him, the Chiefs will be sad to lose him. However the Blues have the greater need.

A pity, though, Damian McKenzie didn’t accept the same challenge when offered the Blues No 10 jersey.

ormer world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali was truly what he claimed to be, “The Greatest.”

It wasn’t just because of his “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” boxing skills. Or the undeniable courage or supreme confidence of a handsome man who declared himself “the prettiest”.

It was a combination of the lot, packaged within a witty, charismatic personality who fought racism, wowed friends and foes and left an indelible mark on world sport.

Ali’s death after battling Parkinson’s Disease for three decades has left billions of admirers to mourn him.

A beautiful boxer who won the 1960 Olympic light heavyweight gold as an 18-year-old in Rome (where Murray Halberg and Peter Snell won the 5000 and 800m titles), Ali became the fastest and smartest world heavyweight of all time.

He carried his hands low but had the sharp eye, dancing feet and evasive skills to make himself an elusive target who taunted opponents as much with his mouth as he did with his left jab.
