HE owner of a drain unblocking and septic tank cleaning business has been issued with a warning under the Health Act by Auckland Council after a storm water cesspit liquid spill ooded through the boundary fence to a neighbouring lifestyle block in Whitford. Problems started on Easter Saturday morning when plumber Perry Coleman, accustomed to the smell of sewage, discovered that about 3000-4000 litres of what he thought was raw sewage had been discharged on the boundary fence line and ran through to a block of native bush at the rear of his Whitford Road property. He

believes the incident occurred under cover of darkness on Good Friday. Among the photos he took the following day was one of his neighbour Philip Abernethy’s tanker parked at the discharge site with its number plate clearly visible. He phoned Auckland Council and a contamination and environmental pollution ofďŹ cer visited on April 7. He was told he would be contacted once the investigation was completed. Meanwhile he sent a six-day-old sample of the efuent to Watercare Environmental Services which returned a 59,000 faecal MPVA/G count. He also emailed the council ofďŹ cer saying: “Yesterday you came out to our property and investigated where

our neighbour had emptied his truck load of (probably raw sewage) down the back of our property and it also owed across into our native bush. The stench of this at the time was disgusting and is simply unacceptable. “This drain unblocking and septic tank emptying is his business and he should not be bringing it back here to his Whitford property to dump illegally. “We would like him prosecuted for this as he has done it before on the other side of his property draining into a property off Griggs Road.â€? When nothing happened Mr Coleman contacted the Times and phoned the ofďŹ cer again shortly before the Times visited his property.

He was told that Mr Abernethy’s explanation was that the spill was an accident and no further action was being taken. Mr Coleman told the Times I am disappointed that the council will not do anything else. The Times asked the council whether it was taking no further action or still considering prosecuting? Was the faecal count of concern? In a report on the incident Marcus Herrmann, the council’s manager, regional environmental control, environmental health says the council carried out a further site visit and held discussions with the customer who raised the concern. ➤ Turn to Page 3
