owick Local Board is considering the possibility of introducing a local targeted rate so that Howick ward residents of all ages have free entry to the area’s only public swimming pools at Lloyd Elsmore Park.

The next step would be to consult further on the specific cost should the feedback be supportive of the investigation.

“We particularly want your feedback on whether to investigate the option of a local targeted rate to enable all our ratepayers

to have free access to our pools,” says David Collings, Howick Local Board chairperson in the Help Shape Howick’s future, summary of the draft Howick Local Board Plan 2017.

However Howick Local Board member Peter Young feels strongly about increasing rates.

“People are absolutely against the idea. They feel this is an excuse for more rates,” he says, slamming the proposal.

“The feedback I have got from people I have met in the electorate is that we would rather have better roads instead of stone chips

surfacing that cause accidents; and better transportation, than the use of free swimming pool facilities.

“We need to prioritise and find out what the community really needs.

“People are happy to pay a nominal amount for the times they use the swimming pool,” he says.

Currently, there is free access to the pools at Lloyd Elsmore for those 16-year-olds and under.

For those 17 years and older, the rate at Lloyd Elsmore Park Pool and Leisure Centre is $4.50 per entry.

eisinia Maka has a few things she would change about the world, but for now, she’s starting in Howick.

Maka, 20, has been named as the 2017 Howick representative for the Youth Advisory Panel.

It’s not her first time working with the council either – she’s been on the youth council since she was 15 in an “open-seat” capacity.

“I have this passion for young people, and their voices,” said Maka. “When you’re passionate it resonates with people, for some reason people believe in me.”

Her most urgent concern is the transparency lacking between the generations, and between council and youth.

The council is consulting with young people through surveys, and without face to face meetings Maka believes they’re losing the real connection and not finding out what the youth really need.

She is prepared to make a difference though.

“I love influencing people, I like a challenge.”

This will not be the first challenge for Maka either, she recently volunteered for the UN, helping plan their national Aotearoa Youth Declaration conference.

She wants to see Howick have a youth centre where young people can come and connect with each other, instead of going into the city.

“I’d like for there to be a place for young people to come together- a place where people can connect.”

Maka also hopes to increase the youth turn out when it comes to voting for

elections.

“I hope to really try to connect with groups, find some sort of way where I’m able to connect with young people in innovative ways.”

The council received 223 applications for the 21 positions, which represent the 21 local board areas.

The role of the youth advisory panel is to offer advice on Auckland Council’s regional policies, plans and strategies reflecting the interest of young people in Auckland.

Maka, who resides in Botany Junction, is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Auckland, majoring in economics with a minor in politics

Snowboarding success for Elim Christian College Elim Christian College snowboarding team has had incredible success at last week’s Auckland Ski and Snowboard Championships held at Snowplanet in Silverdale.

The boys, many of who were competing in their first competition, did extremely well all while learning the ropes on the day.

The girls’ team, who have been training under coach Tody Granat for the past 3-5 years, took out six of the possible top 10 places.

Adele Benns placed 4th in slope style, Baylin Klein Ovink came 4th in Giant Slalom and 5th in Slopestyle, Aleshia Bain came third in Slope Style and 1st in Giant Slalom while Charlotte Mimilo

came third in Giant Slalom.

Last week’s success is a good sign of things to come as the team prepares to compete in the North Island Secondary School Championships and the South Island Snowboard Championships, where only one top achieving North Island team gets invited to each year.

She will be taking over 2016 Howick rep Mackenzie Valgre, who helped inspire her to apply for the role.

“She was a huge inspiration for me. We’re still friends to this day,” said Maka.

Maka aspires to work for the United Nations one day.

“Helen Clark is my inspiration. For a really long time I have been incredibly interested in international relations,” said Maka.

She feels privileged to have been accepted to this position, and have the chance to inspire and be the voice for Howick youth.

“I’d love to find my place in terms of what I can improve for young people.”

Pakuranga Prems to play in pink Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s premier team will be playing in pink for their home game against Grammar TEC on July 1.

It’s all for a good cause – for the first time in the club’s history, the team will dedicate the day to fundraise for Breast Cancer research.

The team will play

in a specially-designed pink playing strip which will also be available for purchase for $500 each.

The game kicks off at 2:45pm and tickets are $40 to attend the special pre-game events where there will be two or three guest speakers.

Pigeon Mountain celebrates culture Learning about different cultures and what makes the school so diverse and unique is how Pigeon Mountain Primary School celebrated the Cultural Day last Friday.

Students were dressed in mufti and each classroom had their own shared lunch ranging from dumplings to fried bread.

There were parades during the day with performances from Macleans College and the Chinese Lion Dance Group as everyone took pride in the cultural diversity at the primary school.

A Pakuranga Plaza spokesperson provided this statement to the Times from GYP Properties: “As owners of Pakuranga Plaza we are committed to redeveloping the centre and we are presently working with architects and designers on a master plan that will breathe new life in to the local and wider communities. It is through this process that we unfortunately have some churn of retailers; however we will be actively engaging with many top brands through the development planning and construction to ensure a vibrant new shopping and dining experience for everyone.”

In October 2015, grand plans were announced for development.

The shopping centre was to introduce apartments, retail and entertainment with the aim of creating a “town centre” rather than

just a “shopping centre”.

GYP Properties bought the plaza in 2014 for $96 million, and said it would spend more than half a billion dollars on the proposed development.

More than 900 dwellings were included in the plan, with a mixture of one, two and three-bedroom apartments with an average size of 100 square metres.

The site was also to be home to a 10-storey hotel building, along with 10,000sqm of office space, 60,000sqm of retail and a conference facility.

Global Yellow Pages chairman Mah Bow Tan said at the time the company knows there is a need to balance commercial interests with those of the community.

“There’s plans for more night market activity, and for more green space. We want to create more a town centre than just a shopping centre per se.”

Mr Young, who has been personally distributing the draft, which has an allocated space for feedback on the back page, urges locals to read the fine print which says: `a local targeted rate would involve all ratepayers in the Howick ward having an additional charge included on their rates bill with this money used specifically to fund the cost of free access’.

He is encouraging residents to give their feedback and have their say on Howick’s draft Local Board Plan 2017 which has been published in English, Korean, Mandarin and Hindi, and delivered to people’s letterboxes.

“If you really want to shape Howick ward’s future, make sure you give your feedback by 4pm on Friday, June 30,” he says.

Pakuranga Plaza’s landlord GYP Properties, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Global Yellow Pages, has confirmed to the Times that Whitcoulls is to vacate the shopping centre.

A Whitcoulls staff member said the store was closing at the end of June. She would not confirm how many staff there were but did say all staff would be relocated to other Whitcoulls stores. The Pakuranga store was currently flogging everything at discount prices, she said, with 25 per cent sales on at the moment. As to customer

he’s one of two local authors nominated in the 2017 Children and Young Adults Book Awards, and Jennifer Beck is taking it all in her stride.

It’s an honour just to be shortlisted as a finalist in the Estern Glen Award for Junior Fiction, said the long-time Botany resident – clearly downplaying the fact that she’s won (and been a finalist in) many competitions prior to this.

She’s written somewhere between 50 and 60 books altogether, estimated Jennifer, as well as newspaper articles and educational readers.

In 2010, Jennifer represented New Zealand at the International Children’s Book Festival.

Five years later, she was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for Services to Children’s Literature, and took up the position of Children’s Writer in Residence at Otago University.

She’s an outstanding author with a knack for taking a story and turning it into something greater, but writing wasn’t always her first choice career plan.

for almost 30 years, and can’t imagine the day she’ll give up her precious creative outlet.

It’s a true story about New Zealand’s oldest survivor of World War I – a tortoise.

Yet there hasn’t been a day he hasn’t enjoyed their splendid colours, bird song and relaxing companionship after a hard day at work.

President of the Auckland Metro Bird Club for the last 10 years, the bird-keeper and judge of German Roller canaries is excited about the oldest bird club in New Zealand and Australia hosting the 108th show at Ormiston Senior College on Saturday and Sunday, July 1- 2.

More than 500 of North Island’s best canaries, budgies, finches, parrots and parakeets will be on display by 60 exhibitors.

Breeding birds from the age of eight, he says: “We are trying to dispel the myth that bird keeping is an old man’s hobby.

We want more young families to get involved.”

There will also be a pet bird section on Sunday from 10am-12noon where local families are invited to bring along their pet bird for a chance to win a prize.

Currently, there is a local school colouring competition and the winning entries will be on display at the show.

canary and Gloster canary as well as exotic finches, will be entering around 25 birds at the show. They’re not excluding older patrons. The bird club has one of its keen members visiting retirement villages in the area and talking to seniors about the fun hobby.

“He even helped a 105-yearold to get rid of her fear of birds,” he says.

Bucklands Beach resident Chris Agius, who has been breeding canaries for 15 years, says that bird-keeping is “like raising little ones and the peaceful hobby is a family affair which can be done in small spaces”.

Breeding show birds involves good maintenance and diet.

“In the months of June-July, I start looking for traits to start putting pairs together,” he says.

He hopes that more young people develop a passion for their feathered friends.

Get ready, set, go!

e’s all geared up to shave his head, go sugar-free for a week and dominate a five kilometre kayak trip – all for the sake of charity.

Seventeen-year-old Elias Worrall-Bader is taking part in this year’s Red Socks Challenge – an event held annually in memory of Sir Peter Blake.

The renowned adventurer led by example when it came to looking after the world we live in.

Now, the Red Socks Challenge aims to honour and continue that legacy by raising money for the Sir Peter Blake Trust that will go toward ‘inspiring New Zealanders to lead the way in looking after the natural environment; to identify new and innovative solutions to the challenges we face and go forward with hope and determination to make a positive change’.

a few things planned for the challenge which he intends to complete during the school’s Sir Peter Blake Leadership Week from June 26-30.

This year’s theme for the week, he said, is Believe You Can, with the aim of inspiring students to aim high in life and take up leadership roles.

Events include themed assemblies with guest speak-

ers, an Instagram leadership message competition, and the handing out of Red Socks to students in recognition of their leadership achievements.

He will be shaving his head “to find out what’s under this mop of hair” on June 30, tackling his sweet tooth by going sugar free for the week and also completing a five-kilometre ocean kayak trip on July 1 in memory of Sir Peter Blake’s love of the ocean.

Last year, Elias attended the Youth Enviro Leaders Forum (YELF) in Nelson, run by the Sir Peter Blake Trust.

“It truly was one of the best times of my life, and I will never forget it,” said Elias.

“It imbued me with Sir Peter Blake’s passion for leadership and for the environment, and I would now like to give back to the Trust.”

Red Socks Day takes place on July 7, but participants have until the end of July to complete their event.

They smashed out the moves with precision and went on to win the Battlegrounds New Zealand Hip Hop competition in Hamilton recently.

The two hip hop dance crews Velocity and V-Kinz from Carter-Chan Dance Centre are thrilled to have gone through the tough national selections rounds to make it to World Supremacy Battlegrounds finals in Sydney in October.

Both crews are trained by choreographers Brandon and Cameron Carter-Chan.

Brandon is a national tap champion and Cameron is the current national hip hop champion.

Brandon says they couldn’t believe it when their names were announced as national winners.

“We were blown away when Velocity, our junior crew, won the New Zealand title for the Young Guns division for 12-15-years-olds.

“They also won their division at the Project Hip Hop competition in Tauranga the weekend prior to the event. That put a lot of pressure on the senior crew V-Kingz since we are the teachers,” he laughs.

V-Kingz scored second place in the open division for adults.

Local taekwondo champ heads to Ireland Samuel MacKay has competed in taekwondo since he was 12-yearsold.

Now, he’s off to the Taekwondo International Championships, held in Ireland from October 9-15, as a New Zealand representative in the under-18 category.

Despite turning 18 later in January, the Beachlands resident qualified for the under-18 team at the time of qualification, which was the beginning of January.

Alongside his taekwondo achievements, Samuel is enrolled in his first year of engineering studies at AUT University, maintains a part-time job to raise money for sporting trips and is a cellist in the Auckland Youth Orchestra.

He picked up the sport when he was eight years old, thinking it would be “cool to try”, and a decade on, he’s stepping onto the world stage to compete against the best in the sport.

“Taekwondo has been something that has not only kept me fit, but has been an amazing discipline, helping with all aspects of life,” he said.

“It is an honour to be selected in the New Zealand team and this

Ice ages occur every 100,000 years and within that cycle there are mini-cycles lasting 20,000 years.

Just 20,000 years ago Auckland had forest area extending out to the Great Barrier Iisland and the Waitemata harbour was a mere creek which would indicate that the present polar ice caps are at their minimum size and are about to go into reverse.

The fact that there has been no noticeable rise in sea levels in the past 50 years (and in the case of The Franz Joseph Glacier, since 1982 has advanced well over a kilometre and Mt Cook is actually rising) would all indicate that climate change is almost solely brought about by variations in insolation (incoming solar radiation) from the sun.

The excess carbon in the earth’s atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels would have minimal effect, if any, on climate change and is more about the damaging effect on the lungs as is being experienced in many Chinese cities and it is that that should be the focus of The Paris Accord (if there is one).

Scientists are about to learn a great deal about the sun’s activities.

Once that information and satellite measurements profiling land mass variations over 100 years and conferences such as the Paris one on climate change, will have so much greater significance.

Ian George (Times, June 15) points out in his “Climate change not down to man” letter that the earth’s climate is not static and is changing all the time.

This is correct but he ignores the problems that our human emissions of around 30 billion tons of CO2 [aused by deforestation, fossil-fuel burning, etc.] have.

Around 30 per cent, or 10 billion tons, end up in our oceans.

This leads to a reduction of pH known as ocean acidification, causing species with shells - such as oysters, lobsters and mussels - to become vulnerable [the more corrosive waters start to dissolve the shells of juveniles of various shellfish before they can mature].

It also causes coral reefs to dissolve, already noticeable in

illegal dumping: A reader saw the vehicle which dumped this.

I recently discovered illegally-dumped building materials on a busy walkway at the end of our cul de sac - Dale Crescent in Pakuranga.

‘Seniors worried for future of their grandchildren’

lection time is akin to a job interview for us,” laughs seasoned politician Ruth Dyson. “We get a bit insecure.”

A Member of Parliament since 1993, including nine years as a Minister, Mrs Dyson visited east Auckland on Monday, at the invitation of Labour candidate for Botany, Tofiq Mamedov.

Dropping in at the Times office for a chat, the Labour Party MP for Port Hills reflects about being at the centre of an electorate ravaged by earthquakes in 2011.

“When there is an aftershock we often find ourselves guessing ‘is this a magnitude 3.8 or a 4.3 quake’? We are so used to it that now it is like a game, and who gets the closest guess,” she says.

There is more light-hearted banter about a problem that commuters have to deal with on a daily basis. “Driving in the city is like adventure tourism.

You don’t know which road will be closed,” she says.

“The positive is that a lot of Christchurch is beautifully rebuilt and it will be the newest city in the world.”

In east Auckland, after having visited the Pakuranga Park Village, Baptist Retirement Village, Grey Power committee meeting and Bruce McLaren Retirement Village in the first half of the day, Labour’s Senior Citizens spokesperson says that seniors in the area have broken away from stereotypes.

“There was a lot of excitement and they were having so much fun at the Bruce McLaren Village playing tabletennis, scrabble and on the greens,” she smiles.

Mrs Dyson says most seniors had a common generational vent — they were concerned about the future of their grandchildren.

“They were all worried that a generation of New Zealanders are being locked out of home ownership and this leaves them very vulnerable in the rental housing market, paying very large portions of their income in rent,” she says.

“Locals told me that they were frustrated that the Budget gave people on high incomes a tax cut but there was nothing being done to address the housing crisis.”

In terms of finding a solution, she suggests that Government should work towards stopping property speculation.

“Also stop non-New Zealand residents from buying houses,” she says.

“I do believe it is the responsibility of the government to build more houses and make it easier in terms of zoning and resource consent. It’s sad that the current government is offering future generations less than previous generations had during their life.”

Han makes Kiwi team heading to maths olympiad A lot of perseverance is needed to solve some of the toughest problems.

Macleans College student William Han equates perseverance to resolutely spending hours on end solving mathematical problem, without giving up.

It’s his strong ability to keep going relentlessly, trying different methods to find the right solutions to a problem that paid off.

The 15-year-old has made it to the national team representing New Zealand at the International Maths Olympiad (IMO) at Rio de Janerio, Brazil, in July.

“It’s not unusual for me to spend 3-4 hours on a problem and not find a solution,” says the Year 11 student.

“I try a whole lot of different methods. And I find that failure to solve a problem helps me to learn more about what I should try the next time.

“The best way to improve is to go through the struggle to solve problems.”

It was only because of his childhood friend Andrew Chen, who studies

at St Kentigern College, that he first got to know about it last year and started putting in the hard yards to prepare for it.

After 24 students qualified from schools all over New Zealand, they sat some more tests where the number of students first filtered down to 12 and then to the final six.

William is pleased that his friend Andrew is also part of the team.

“This is the second time Andrew is representing New Zealand. He was selected last year as well,” he explains.

On July 14, the team will head to Brazil for the IMO where students representing 100 countries will compete for the top spot.

William, who has had a good understanding of maths from a very young age, says the competition at the international level is going to be very tough.

But he doesn’t let it bother him too much.

“If I wanted it easy I wouldn’t be here representing New Zealand. I would have given up a long time ago.”

He’s a lawyer and a performer.

Somehow, Rory Nolan manages to balance his passion for both the arts and the law.

The talented performer rehearsed his role in Mamma Mia! whilst studying for his fifth-year law exams in 2014.

In 2016, he was working for a commercial law firm during the day and performing the leading role of Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera.

Nolan began performing at the age of 16, appearing in his first production Jesus Christ Superstar at Saint Kentigern College and fell in love with the performing arts.

“I know I’ve always wanted to be a singer, but at the same time can’t believe that I am finally getting the opportunity to pursue it as a realistic career choice.”

Now, he’s appeared in more than 15 music, television and theatre productions, and has taken time out of his day job to perform in Operatunity’s upcoming show It’s Rainin’ Men! Hairspray tells the story of exuberant teenager Tracy Turnblad living in 1960’s America, where racial segregation has permeated every aspect of society.

With the help of her newfound friends, and a desire to see all people integrated for the sake of dance, Tracy sets out to permanently integrate her favourite afterschool show.

Howick College head of drama and expressive arts, Jillian Dryden, said the show is a wonderful way to expose students to the community, and empower students to make the world a better place by standing up for what’s right.

“Hairspray is so relevant to the world we live in right now – the uncertain world we live in right now.

ational median house prices increased 6.7 per cent to $540,000 (up from $506,100) in the year to May 2017, according to the latest data from the Real Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) – source of the most complete and accurate real estate data in New Zealand. We saw record median prices achieved in 4 of the 14 regions we measure – Northland ($450,000), Manawatu/ Wanganui ($269,000), Nelson/Marlborough ($483,250) and Southland ($238,000) – suggesting that the regions continue to hold up overall.

“Auckland median house prices increased 5 per cent year-on-year to $865,000, showing continued growth in the Auckland housing market, albeit at a slower rate than the previous year. Compared to April it increased 1.6 per cent,” continued Norwell.

The REINZ HPI indicates that housing market activity nationwide year-on-year has lifted 5.0 per cent, up in Auckland by 1.8 per cent and outside Auckland by 11.1 per cent. The number of properties available for sale rose by 131 in May 2017 compared to 12 months ago, although the number of properties for sale in the Auckland region has increased by 2814 (+47 per cent).

Outside Auckland the number of properties for sale fell by 2683 (-14 per cent).

Compared to May 2016 the number of listings fell 0.7 per cent in Canterbury, 6.9 per cent in Wellington and 6.1 per cent in Waikato. The largest declines occurred in Northland (-607), Manawatu/Wanganui (-571) and Otago (-302).

Auction rates

The number of dwellings sold by auction continues to decline across New Zealand with 956 properties sold by auction, in comparison to 1982 in May 2016 – a decrease of 52 per cent. Additionally, auctions accounted for 13 per cent of total property sales, down from 22 per cent in May 2016.

When looking at auctions across the regions, Auckland saw 536 auctions in May 2017 (down from 1277 a year ago, representing 24 per cent of sales in May 2017 versus 42 per cent in May 2016), while over the same period Waikato declined to 10 per cent of sales versus 13 per cent, Wellington stayed consistent with 6 per cent of sales (up from 5 per cent), and Canterbury decreased to 12 per cent from 15 per cent.

Days to sell lengthens

The median days to sell nationally increased by five to 37 days, compared to 32 days in May 2016. Regionally, Hawke’s Bay had the shortest median days to sell at 30 days followed by Wellington

“We are seeing a continuing trend of strong median house price growth in many of the regions year-on-year, however, a lack of inventory continues. In Auckland, with sales volumes down, inventory levels increasing, the number of days to sell increasing and the level of auctions decreasing you might have expected to see prices decreasing in Auckland – however, this is not the case,” points out Norwell.

“This can be explained by looking at the wider fundamentals currently at play in New Zealand. Given the considerable mismatch between population growth, increasing immigration figures, low interest rates, high housing demand and low building consents and housing supply, it’s clear why prices are still rising – although at single rather than double-digit growth levels.”

“We believe that overall buyers are being more cautious – we’re heading into winter which traditionally sees a slowdown in activity, we’re in an election year, some political uncertainty globally in some of our traditional trading markets and first-time buyers are finding access to capital more difficult. This goes some way to explaining the intricacies of what we’re currently seeing in the New Zealand market,” concludes Norwell.

he All Blacks can expect a brutal aerial bombardment and bone-crunching tackles to combat their superior running game against the British and Irish Lions in Saturday’s eagerly awaited first test at Eden Park.

TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously.

Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques.

We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

Pakuranga United Rugby Club is reeling after the premiers suffered a massive defeat at the weekend. The prems went down 51-12 to Eden after trailing 30-0 at half-time.

“Yes it was one of those days where our boys decided not to turn up,” confessed premier coach Pita Alatini. “It was our worst performance so far this season...there’s no excuses. We had a team capable to get the result but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.”

Meanwhile the pressure is back on the prems for this weekend’s game against University.
